The Best Of All Seasons 2022
New Year on Newborough Beach, Anglesey –  mainland Wales in the mist * We began and ended 2022 on the island of Anglesey in North Wales. In between there were meanderings to favourite spots in Shropshire and around and about the town of Much Wenlock. So here we gave a random selection of a year’s happy moments and things that caught my eye. i made a codywan charm set! they attach to each other through a little orange magnetic heart. approximately 3 inches in size (one slightly smaller), a clip-on key attachment, and different artwork on both sides. final cutlines etc may differ slightly due to production demands. cody's helmet will be partially transparent for a fun effect, that's why it's orange with white lines.
reblogs to spread the word appreciated!
ships mid-october, pre-order here so i know how many to order, the pre-order will be availalble for approximately a week (extra charms will be available to order after as well, but i have literally no idea how much demand there will be for these)
also taking suggestions for other ships :>

Plush pillow :>
I thought the cutline will make actual product round like cloud but when they got sewn it's smooth than the cutline example. if I making pillow like this again I might make it square cutline instead but overall I happy to have them

Its all over now people i have been granted incredible power! Ty to @claiborneart for showing me how to operate a laser cutter eehehe. He turned out beautiful, and i love him🥹
Under the cut: some shots of the cutter in motion, and some process and color test shots.
Here was the original sketch i’d based the linework off. Actually the first drawing of Jim I’d done while i was learning how he worked! The second image are the final lines i used(minus the sparkle, which i added later) for the cutter, and an idea of where i wanted the outside cutlines to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sent that through the cutter program and made a bunch of him!
These are some tests i’d done on a few duds to pick out and practice painting the colors:
Tumblr media
After that I went assembly line mode and painted each one extremely carefully one color at a time using the tests as reference!
Tumblr media
Also… he’s got blacklight capabilities eehehe!

“LONELINESS IS DANGEROUS” NEW YORK CITY 1955 Illustration: Ed Vebell “Loneliness is Dangerous,” a story by Harry Coren. Cutline: “Alone in the midsts of millions, the girl, who longed to talk to someone, stood on her fire escape as the voices of others, enjoying the companionship denied her, drifted up through the night.” Sunday Mirror Magazine, August 14, 1955. “Ed Vebell’s life makes for a terrific story. But his skill was in illustrating other people’s stories. His work for Sunday Mirror magazine is superb. The New York Sunday Mirror was the Sunday edition of the New York Daily Mirror, launched by the Hearst organization in 1924 and published until 1963. Red was his colour of choice. This was art that grabbed your attention and made you want to read on…” https://www.instagram.com/p/ClgJawrsEhl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

⚔️Good Evening! We have an exciting update for you all!⚔️
After many setbacks, delays, back and forth edits, we are very happy to show off our hard proof! We are so thankful for our new manufacturer for working with us, we cannot wait for you all to hold this in your hands!
We are happy with how everything turned out, and are immediately starting production as soon as we can! We once again cannot thank you all enough for your endless patience as we navigated these rough waters, but soon our disc 3 journey will come to an end! On to disc 4!
Notes for clarification: - While this is a hard proof, this does not represent the final product! This proof was to show us how colors looked, readability of the stories, clarity of images etc. The visible cutlines and rough cutting of the pages will not be in the final!
- The gorgeous cover of You're Not Alone was done by one of our talented musicians,
@ArcanaXIX / http://arcanaxix.com !

Thorin boot caps, start to finish
I’d made the pattern for his boot caps available in my shop, but unlike my other pattern packages, it didn’t come with instructions on how to make them. So, here is me fixing that with a quick step-by-step tutorial. :)
Tumblr media
Step one, print your pattern, trace it out (twice) onto 10 oz veg-tan:
Tumblr media
(The reason that leather is an odd shape is because it was a discarded panel from the Witcher armor. Waste not, want not, I suppose. 🤣)
Cut it out; you can use a utility knife or an exacto knife for this:
Tumblr media
Case it, aka dunk it in water a bit until it softens up:
Tumblr media
Then you’ll probably want to put it in a plastic bag or something overnight, so that the water can evenly permeate the leather. I wrote a whooooooole big thing on proper casing that’s much too long to retread here, but is worth a read if you’re trying to git gud at leather tooling.
When the leather is well cased, take a stylus (or a ballpoint pen) and trace the design from your pattern piece. The leather should darken where you’ve indented it, an effect called burnishing, that makes your traced design very easy to see:
Tumblr media
(And if your design isn’t burnishing well, that’s usually a tip-off that your leather is still much too wet.)
The next step is to use a swivel knife to go over all the lines you traced. I actually forgot to take a picture of this step, but digging around on my computer turned up a very old WIP photo from the same project, showing the carved lines next to the traced lines:
Tumblr media
If you haven’t used a swivel knife before, I strongly advise doing a lot of practice on scrap leather before you attempt it on your project -- it’s unintuitive for people who aren’t used to it, and in my opinion it is one of the hardest leatherworking tools to master. On the plus side: this project is entirely straight lines, which makes it much easier.
Once you’ve got your cutlines made, you are going to bevel every single one of them -- outward from the design, inward from the edges of the piece.
Tumblr media
It looks kind of complicated at a glance, but technically speaking it’s very simple, since all you’re doing is bevelling. You can do almost the entire thing with a single stamp, a wide checkered beveller (Craftool B971, if you’re buying from Tandy Leather), and switch to a narrower beveller (what’s shown here is a Barry King tool; the closest Craftool equivalent would probably be B936) for getting into a couple of tight crannies.
When your tooling is done, you’ll want to put some texturing on the overall piece, because that will make it look better when it comes time to paint it. I have a mallet I made for exactly this purpose, a cheapo rubber mallet that I pockmarked with a dremel, but you can literally just go outside and find a rock for this step:
Tumblr media
Take a rivet hole punch (~2 mm) and punch the holes as shown:
Tumblr media
(Or punch different holes -- this is going to be how you attach them to your shoes, and there are a lot of different ways you could go about that.)
Take your edge beveller and round off the sharp square edges (you’ll do this on both the top side and the underside), as shown below:
Tumblr media
Punch stitching holes as shown. If you don’t have one of these punches, you can poke the holes with with an awl instead, it’ll just be slower.
Tumblr media
Take your knife again and carefully cut at a 45 degree angle from the top of your stitching holes to the edge of the leather. This is what is going to allow them to come together to form a tidy right angle:
Tumblr media
Mark the lines where it’s going to fold, and do something similar there. The key is that we’re removing material to make it easier to bend the leather, and make for sharper angles in the folds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time to dye! For this (and other armor pieces that get gilded afterward) I use Eco-Flo Waterstain in black. Leave the angled edges you cut undyed, because that will help them adhere better when it comes time to glue:
Tumblr media
And before you leave them to dry, pre-fold them into the final shape you want -- it will put less strain on the glue, and folding leather after it’s dry can cause it to crack.
Tumblr media
When the dye is dry, apply contact cement to the angled edges:
Tumblr media
Wait 15~20 minutes for the contact cement to set, and then firmly press the edges together, being careful to have them correctly aligned before you do. (Because you only get one shot with contact cement, and if you set it crooked, you’ll have to pry them apart, scrub the glue off, and try again.)
Tumblr media
Time to stitch up the corners, because glue is almost never meant to be the ONLY thing holding leather together. Start like so, with 12″ of waxed black thread and two blunt needles:
Tumblr media
And then you just kinda.... sew up the line. I’m not sure how to explain it, just stick needles in holes in a way that makes sense.
From the outside:
Tumblr media
From the inside:
Tumblr media
Then tie off a knot with your loose ends, and clip them down to like 3/4″. With the tie-off at the top rather than the bottom, it’s not likely to come loose because there’s no strain being put on it at that point.
Then, because those glued-together edges are currently very ugly, you’ll want to take them down with some sandpaper, or a knife if you’ve got a steady hand. I use the sanding drum on a dremel, to make them level and smooth them out:
Tumblr media
And then you’ll need to hit those edges with another quick coat of the black dye, and buff them smooth, which I also forgot to take a picture of. Fortunately this step is easy: edges are undyed, so dye them.
Very last step is to put the metal color on them. In all the reference pics they look like a very muddy bronze, and I found a great mimic for that in Rub n Buff’s “Spanish Copper.”
Tumblr media
It’s very simple to apply, you just coat your finger with a very small amount of it, and then dab/rub it lightly over your surface. It gilds the raised areas without getting into the crevices, which does a brilliant job bringing out the textural detail in your work.
That said, if you don’t have that product and don’t want to acquire it, you can dry-brush it with your acrylic paint of choice.
And then you’re done -- le voila, Thorin boot caps!

Fine Weather For The MacMoos…
Fine Weather For The MacMoos…
When we’re popping to the shops, it’s always a treat to find the highland cattle in the Cutlins meadow. They come and go during the year, moved to other fields around the town. Sometimes we have members of the junior clan, sometimes the seniors, now and then a calf with mother and aunts. In summer we watch them flaked out, wherever they can find shade. In winter they seem much more spritely, or…

Shows I saw in 2023 Part 6: Phantom London (3 shows, 3 Casts, AMA)
Tumblr media
Listen, originally it started with going once. Then another friend wanted to go another night. Then I thought if I gambled with matinee Rush seats I might get a different cast. Turns out I was right.
Tues 10/10: Jon Robyns/Eve Shanu-Wilson/Joe-Griffiths Brown
Weds 10/11: James Gant/Lily Kerhoas/Joe
Thurs 10/12: Jon/Lily/Joe
I hit the jackpot. Also shoutout to the whole crew on Thursday night when the stage lost power right before final lair and they had to pause the show for five minute to get the stage set.

Some overall thoughts after the cutline:
Lily is the best Christine I have ever seen live, hands down. She is also the strongest (even stronger than Emilie Kouatchou). She is damn near calling a lot of the shots. Some ways: she locks the door between "Things have changed, Raoul" and "Insolent Boy". She does NOT want Raoul coming back. She is seemingly delighted to hear the "voice" and is very willing going through the mirror. On the travelator during the title track she actually goes ahead of Phantom by several feet like "so we're going to your place, right?". During AIAOY, she pulls away from Raoul during her first verse and her body language is telling him "Say you love me" is her giving her terms and conditions. During PONR after she feels Phantoms' mask and he pulls away from her she's the one putting his hands on her waist and pressing herself against him like "ahem, you started this fire and now I'm going to pour some gasoline on it. "
Between Eve and Lily, Eve is very good but Lily is so exceptional that she's far and away better. The key difference is Eve's Christine is much more fearful and tentative. For example, during STYDI, once Christine is on the floor, Eve is turned away from Phantom the entire time. Lily is facing him the entire time. Both Phantoms briefly show his whole face again, and then she reacts, which is followed by the "Oh Christine". With Eve, she yelps. With Lily, they're so close it looks like they're about to kiss. Lily gasps. During PONR, Eve's Christine is much more tentative and fearful. Lily's is into it. In both of them, the Phantoms are taking Christine off the stage to get her out of danger (they both have two guns pointed at them right before this)
Jon vs James. Tough one. Jon by a hair BUT Gantom's chemistry with Christine is palpable and off the charts. They are both phenomenal. It's hard to choose. Gant is going on so much right now that he's basically an alternate at this point, so he's getting in the reps and sets to really make the role his own and develop chemistry with the Christines. I think I liked Jon just slightly more but he's also the last person I saw. If I saw Gantom again I might say he's my favorite.
Vocally, both of them manage to achieve the ghost-like, floaty phantom who brings the power when it matters, and make very subtle changes with their breath control to convey emotion (especially when pleading with Christine). They are both very sad and desperate Phantoms, but James Gant has a sweetness to his that I think is very interesting to watch. He's the only Phantom that has ever made me cry before final lair. He holds his heart during the AIAOY reprise and then does it again during final lair (the only thing I don't like is Gant is a "daddying gaze" Phantom, and I despise the fathering line--Robyns does far-reaching). Jon does this thing during AIAOY where he is hitting his ears (he does not do it during Final Lair). His crying during final lair is also exceptionally realistic and desperate.
Again on the combo: Lily and Jon both do a thing after the kiss where they are both touching their lips trying to figure wtf just happened and what they're feeling. Jon is the one to break the kiss and Christine damn nearly needs to be dragged out of the lair. But...Lily/James MOTN was so sensual I was like...do we need to ask the children in the audience to leave? I think she still has a father/daughter relationship with Jon from their time in Les Miz
Joe Griffiths-Brown is a wonderful singer and plays Raoul as a arrogant puppy. However, I wasn't really getting any chemistry between him and any of the Christines. He's still a little wooden but I think he's going to continue to develop in the role.
I had Grace Hume as u/s Meg. I hesitate to say anything negative here, but her singing is noticeably lackluster to the point that it's distracting. I hoped maybe she had a bad day on Tuesday but it was the same every time.
I stagedoored the last night and met Lily, Joe, and James. They were all kind and gracious!
