Deltarune Future Chapter Themes
Okay, it's been three months and I haven't seen anyone talk about this. And I get it. The Spamton sweepstakes finale was... a lot. And I recognize that 99.9999% of it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
But this is Toby Fucking Fox we're talking about. And I genuinely think he gave us more info about the next update than we thought.
So let's dive in.
One of the first things to notice is that the finale broadcast featured five rounds of prizes, with some skit/commercial break preceeding each round. Before Round 2 began, we were introduced to Spamton B. Spamton, whose creation was accomplished through motion-capture technology. The following commercial break had Spamton Z. Spamton talk about your computer's anti-virus.
(Exhibit B: The studio could not afford Mocap, but I laud their efforts.)
(Exhibit Z: Our friend recommends disabling your computer's antivirus. Sage advice, clearly.)
It's a very tech-focused interlude, apt for Chapter 2's focus in the computer lab.
Before Round 3, we got a broader variety of skits and commercials, including the release of the classic album Okay, That's What I Think Music Is. Nothing too noteworthy or connected to CH3's TV theme, except maybe:

This was followed by a beautiful poetic performance by Spamtons A and B, which once again, had a hint of relation to the TV theme Chapter 3 is shaping up to be.

Sensing a pattern? The commercial breaks/skits allude to the themes of their respective chapters-- at the very least for the themes we know so far. But there are five in total, which corresponds perfectly with the chapters we'll have following the next update. It's not too much of a stretch to wonder if the trend continues until the broadcast's end.
So let's make my sophomore year English teacher proud and overanalyze the fuck out of this fever dream!!
Break number 4 started with the, ah, fresh Pipis demonstration. Take what you will from it, but Spamton A is prominently putting the Pipis within his mouth, as if they're something to consume (even if he doesn't quite go through with it).

The commercials themselves feature the recall of the previously mentioned Nutrinose, which was meant to be an independent nutritional tool but had the unfortunate side effect of inducing explosions.
(Exhibit N: "This product may pose a fatal explosion hazard to consumers. Do not use the product. Throw the product away or return it to your nearest restaurant.")
...Come again?

Of the non-Spamton updates that Toby gave us, one of the prominent screenshots was of Kris and Susie in QC's diner. The Deltarune website makes sure to highlight Kris' "favorite seat" here, in a place with lots of family ties and memories for them. The diner is also one of the few places where we can receive a consumable in the Light World (the only other LW consumables being Undyne's candy and the box of chalk). And, of course, diners are often well-known for their burgers, making this the most aptly suited place to return your recalled Nutrinose.
Long story short, it's very probable that Chapter 4 will take place in QC's diner, with a pretty heavy focus on food.
But we're not stopping there, folks!
Because before the untimely demise of our beloved Spamton A. Spamton, there was one more round of prizes-- and before that still, one last Break.
There were several skits and commercials within the last Break, so this section is the most open to speculation, but the two skits that held a theme were the "unsolved miracles"...

And, of course, the final prayer.

Admittedly, the first time I watched through the finale, I thought this might be related to the hospital; after all, they talked a lot about life force, miracles, and "singing thee to thy rest". All of these could point to someone currently in the hospital, who Kris has some pre-existing tie to, who maybe doesn't fare well as our week continues.
(Sorry, Rudy.)
However, my rewatch revealed one crucial word I'd missed the first time: Angel. Say what you want, but I don't think any mention of the Angel within Deltarune is to be ignored. Combining this concept with the essence of the miracles and the prayer itself, and we have more and more evidence for a Dark Fountain erupting within the Church.
Given that Chapter 5 will be the last in the new update, it makes sense that it would bring us closer and closer to the mystery of the Dark Worlds-- and, because there's no point in pretending there's no connection, bringing us closer to the bunker on the south end of town. The Church is the closest location on the map, and its themes of the Angel speak for itself. Father Alvin is also one of the few characters who can trigger a cutscene with our interaction, leading to this moment of eavesdropping:

His deceased father, Gerson Boom, was the town's historian and storyteller; in the world of Deltarune as a whole, few characters may bring us nearer to the truth.

Thus, both Alvin and the Church make the theme of religion (specifically, the town's religion with the Angel) a strong candidate for Chapter 5.
So let's wrap things up: We seem to have five Chapter themes so far.
Games.
The Internet.
Television.
Food.
Religion.
What do they have in common?
They're entertainment. They're places to go and things to do. They take up our time, they make up our lives. They draw us in.
In the context of the game, someone really wants us to finish the story of Deltarune, and they're drawing on anything that grabs our attention to keep us interested. They give us games to play, use the internet to study us. They trap us in front of the TV. They entice us with the foods we love and need. They play on our faith.
Someone wants us to keep going.
Someone wants us to stay determined.
At all costs.

gonna absolutely be that "old lady shaking her walker, and screaming how olden days were better" for a minute here.....
There is a very specific thing I very much miss, and its the... well... lack of streaming. Scheduled programming! (be it both visual or radio. .... the radio one is whole 'nother rant, fuck ClearChannel/Viacom etc etc)
now don't get me wrong - i freakin luv the ability to watch some ancient b/w telly, carefully pumped pixel by pixel into my phone from the library server at 2:45am....
but its the fact Boring Dystopia today doesn't let you escape algorithms & their endless grey sludge
so like... TV!
My set cannot pick up regular airwaves signal w/out additional "digital bunny-ears" or something similar. Most stations have switched to digital signals years ago, this is fact.
Back in the day you could flip on the telly, and have the choice of a few local channels. You got your usual local affiliates: FOX, WB, ABC, UPN, NBC, CBS and of course PBS. plus that one endless shopping network
Even as background noise you'd still end up getting all sorts of good stuff with different ads, local news flashes, whatever sitcom was running would have "on the next..." and you'd be like "heeeey, Friends is still making new episodes? and this channel still shows it?" Might hear about some movie didn't know existed because it was mentioned as scheduled for Saturday 8pm eastern, 7 central in that last ad-break, but the visuals in this tiny clip looked neat so might try to see it.....
what can i do today tho... Lets see, there's the option of a bunch of streaming shit. It requires a quick app d/l (again, don't get me wrong, TUBI and PlutoTV are a+ "thank fuck u exist" kinda things) buuuuut ... you can't just leave it be.
Even the ads are somehow ... grey formless sludge. The same 3-5 shitty things that are determined by algorithm, never any variation. No news-teases, no trailers for movies coming to theater/streaming soon.... who'da thought would miss the damn Wendys new breakfast deals or local (local) car dealership promos
but no, with a streaming 'oooh wait, 'app' you gotta either scroll thru the shitty UI menu to pick what you wanna watch specifically... or in case of Pluto chose a channel.... Which will be just One Thing on a loop too (like a channel of nothing but Addams Family. nothing but The Walking Dead franchise. nothing but SailorMoon episodes) If you chose an episode of a show, and put away the remote it will just keep jumpin to next episode of same until it runs out...
.... i miss times of day influencing what was on. The kinda shit running during "primetime", early morning cartoons, early-noon little kids targeted shows, mid-afternoon soaps and bullshit talk shows, vs "middle of the night" The silly station eye-catches (TNT...dun dun dun, we know drama), ads for gushers mixed in with quick weather updates as the channel hopes you'll tune in at 10pm for the News.
I miss discovering new (new to me!) shows or movies but flipping a channel. Disney Channel used to air ANCIENT b/w Alice Comedies or those utterly ridiculous 70s bebi Jodie Foster movies at 1am. AMC was full of old movies (pre-70s stuff mostly), TLC stood for "the learning channel", MTV and VH1 were 2 distinct separate entities showing actual ~ try to contain your shock ~ music videos. and if u were hella lucky, you'd glitch into (or it was free preview month) MTV2 which was for the alt rock vids!

No i don't miss the ancient shit like TV set that had round knobs and the numbers only went to 13. The horrid static noises. If Emily hasn’t been working then how has she been paying her bills? I know there’s her music career but acting has always been consistent with her especially her time in TWD but ever since Coda was first aired, each year, she hasn’t been on any shows nor movies that’s as successful and big as TWD. There’s no doubt of the obvious that she must be still working for AMC as an actress for TWD as Beth for one of their secret spin-off starring her whenever they actually release to us, what do u think
I agree. If you watch the ABC tie really closely (as I do) it becomes obvious that when AMC doesn't have work for an actor for a space of time (perhaps a year) but wants to retain them for the future, they get them small job on minor pilot series that only last one season. This ensures that the actor won't take work from another big show or studio, so AMC can use them in the show when they need them again.
We've seen this with many actors from TWD. Michael Cudlitz, Lauren Cohen, Sydney Park to name a few.
Of course, no one can just go without work for a year. Everyone has to pay their bills. So having them work on some smaller project also allows them to make money in the interim.
So, if you think about that coming from the other direction, it means that any actors who have done these smaller shows and then returned to TWD are specifically still being retained by AMC in a small way, so they can return to the show at some point.
While we haven't seen the return part with Emily yet, she meets every other criteria. She's done several small ABC shows. She hasn't taken a job with another big show or studio. Just small ABC pilots or one-episode appearances.
And yes, I do think her music career sustains her to a great extent as well. But she's always saying that while she loves her music, acting is her true passion. So why has she focused way more on her music in the past 5 years than on acting?
Could it be because she's still in a contract with AMC, and has a big job waiting for her (or rather, she's waiting for it to come back around--damn you Covid!)?
So, in short, I totally agree with you, Nonny. Just waiting for the "return" part with Emily/Beth. Xoxo! 🔥😎💗

y’know I DID realize how weird it was for Beth to act like that. like, the snake episode, abcs of Beth, and probably so much more I’m not thinking of rn, and they have Beth acting like she’s never shot a gun before? it was definitely….a decision. a baffling decision.
on a side note, I think it’s so interesting u bring up how little of Beth and rick moments there are when I’ve actually always thought that Rick has always been the most openly affectionate and loving towards her. but then again, I’m guessing you’re talking more in terms of how their actual relationship had progressed? which, in that case, yeah, it’s weird how little the show talks about it. I mean, even when discussing rick’s whole dead family or whatever, Diane is what the show tends to gravitate on. Like, they will either say dead family or dead wife, rarely dead daughter. How Rick truly feels about Beth is a rlly underutilized aspect of the show, now what I think about it, honestly; damn.
honestly!! I get that from the episode's perspective they wanted to establish a bigger personality difference between Space Beth and domestic Beth (and why Summer would gravitate towards one vs the other) but I thought it was silly that it came at the expense of her competency when she proven herself to be practically the second most competent person in the family, after Summer herself.
And don't get me wrong, I definitely have noticed Rick's affection towards Beth (and I love it!!) but at the same time out of all his relationships in the show ... it still feels like the least personal? Like yes I agree that he is nicer to her than he is to the rest of the characters, but it hardly ever feels specific to her as a person imo. The show has done such a great job so far of expanding on the specificities his relationships to characters like Morty and Summer, and even now BP and Diane. Those feel like unique relationships that he has with them and we as an audience are allowed to fully understand his specific feelings about and towards them.
Unfortunately (for me lol) his relationship(s) with Beth is not explored with this same lens. Like is she specifically important to him (I would hope so) and how/why? Obviously, he loves Diane. He was in love with Diane and the show takes the time stress how important she is in his narrative, "dead wife", "won't bring her back", etc. It would just be nice to know how strong of an impact Beth has on that as well, or if she only fits into the narrative because her death is linked to Diane's?
You're 100% right Rick's feelings towards Beth as a person is an underutilized aspect of the show and it kills me constantly thinking about it because it's the least developed dynamic in the show ...

a - anguished cries in the middle of the night. anxiety attacks that never came before the war. “admitting if i harbor a weakness is the last thing i’ll ever do.”

s - silk dresses. swords of a metal she’s not quite sure she can identify but that stay sharp all on their own. star-filled skies. sorrow for all she’s lost.
t - trembling white fingers struggling to hold the lightest items. too-heavy weapons weighing her down physically and emotionally.
u - unprepared for the horror of war. unprepared to face her destiny. unprepared for the loss she endures along the way.
v - vanishing into the depths of her thoughts, loathe to return to the real world.
w - withdrawal from those around her. wishing for a miracle to bring her home.
x - “x marks the spot.” “that’s the Forbidden Land.” “don’t care.”
y - young soul turned old in a matter of months.
