hi egg!!!! ive seen the tag a couple times now and im just so curious who is lady terror 👀 an oc? a ship personified? can i peer into your mind for a second (the answer here can also be Who's to say or just NO)
YES! Lady Terror (real name: Genevieve Sinclair) is my sortof self-insert (though she’s gained a bit more of a life of her own now) OC for the Terror. She and Francis as the most disenfranchised from british empirical thought and good society are falling horrifically in love with each other over the course of the expedition in spite of their respective past romantic rejections and dejections and it being the literal Worst Time To Do That. And I tag them when I am… reminded (I’m certain some think I do this too often… but it’s my house). I’m painfully (and soul crushingly at times) trying to get the canon novel for them written (though I have an excerpt of the first chapter in my masterlist in my pinned, should that be of interest), which intends to have the most insane gothic jane austen vibes one could hope for, and I have like 20 au’s for them including a particular western au that is gaining increasing real estate in my brain recently. Loads of content in the “egg’s oc’s” tag if you wanna take a peek (I say mostly bc I’m exclusively on mobile atm bc my computer is in the shop and linking over isn’t very easy😭) and I have some mini fics for them in my masterlist as well!

the main reason ds9 isn't remembered as well as the original series or tng by the general populace is not just because it wasn't the very first trek or the most popular trek (tng's popularity was what really brought trek into the mainstream).
it was hated by Rick Berman, who was the head of the franchise at its height, and who deliberately spited it by never including its canon in other treks.
and that effect has lasted to this day, as modern writers who only bother to watch Star Trek movies never seem to remember ds9 even exists. the way the Pine-Quinto movies mention Archer and his beagle, and trek movies and shows make multiple references to TOS, and newer treks center entirely around tng plots or the Borg.
the way they brought back seven of nine before literally anyone on the cast of ds9.
there's a reason that the damn tng movies had a million references to Voyager, with Janeway and the EMH actually having cameos, but ds9 never even got a passing reference, even where it actually would've been appropriate.
Berman hated ds9 for its focus on serialization, i. e., connected storytelling, rather than syndication, i. e. episodic storytelling, because he was a money grubbing misogynist and homophobe, who thought all the money was in syndication. he hated the writers/other producers of ds9 for going behind his back and doing their damnedest to make quality star trek.
one of my favorite spiteful Berman stories is that in star trek first contact, the 2nd tng movie, he wanted to blow up the defiant and destroy it permanently, just for no reason at all.
and the ds9 writers were upset because no one had asked them about it. so they said you can destroy the defiant, but we're just gonna keep using the defiant and pretending it didn't blow up if you do.
which is why Worf asks Picard, in a completely thrown in line, what's the status of the defiant, and Picard says adrift, but salvageable.
and this particular movie is funny to me also because in that period, Worf is technically supposed to still be serving on ds9, and bringing him into the movie was basically justified as something of a side quest for him, being dragged off the station for a little tng romp.
so you see the crew of the defiant, but... again. Berman spite. rather than letting ANYONE on ds9 cameo in the first contact movie, even though that might've been cool... they just have some randos. one might be Adam Scott.
and remember that JANEWAY AND THE EMH are in that movie.
so berman deliberately wanted to spite ds9 by destroying the defiant, stealing worf (even making fun of him for his role on ds9 in another thrown in riker line) AND snub the entire crew of ds9 by having none of them anywhere in the movie, even though they COULD HAVE CAMEOED TOO, or at least been mentioned...
and to me that's pretty funny, because Rick Berman could have as many tantrums as he wanted behind closed doors, and hate the staff of ds9.
didn't make a difference. they'd still keep defying him, and you know...
not to be a total prick but... ds9 still has a thriving fanbase to this day. tng does too, and so does tos, and star trek in general is doing pretty well...
but out of all the old treks, ds9 has aged the best, not just in how it looks, but also in how it bridges the gap between, old world optimistic charm and more gritty, humanistic sci fi story telling.
it balanced syndication and serialization really well, and had great standalone episodes AND a fun connecting overarching narrative that made the world of star trek feel richer and more lived in. I also want to say that for modern audiences, who are accustomed to serialization more than syndication, ds9 is a far easier entry point into the world of star trek than any other trek.
Rick Berman can go fuck himself, is what I'm saying, in summation.
ds9 will stand the test of time.
and you know what?
both tng and voy succeeded in spite of Berman. not because of him. everything that makes those two shows work, is in defiance of the Roddenberry mandates that both Roddenberry and Berman constantly tried to uphold, even though it was to the detriment of the stories.

i'm so glad david tennant has returned as the doctor. listen: i love jodie as the doctor. i think she was absolutely brilliant and deserved better in every single way. but the fact is that her run did not do well. when david was playing the tenth doctor the show was at it's highest viewership. voyage of the damned reached 13.3 MILLION. by the end of jodie's run, it was down ten million viewers. there are multiple factors invovled in this, and it's upsetting as hell but you have to remember that objectively ncuti's doctor has a shitton of odds against him. he is the first black queer man playing the doctor. so many of us are excited! but a lot of the dw fandom is horrifically racist and homophobic. he NEEDS the viewership that david coming back to the show is bringing and i know that is the entire reason they're doing this, really. you can think ten is overrated all you want, but it is being used as tool for ncuti's era to have as much success as possible after the last few seasons struggled so much.

on behalf of all the people who didn't realise they weren't straight until their early 20's (even despite how obvious it may be in hindsight) i wish a very happy Fuck You to all the self absorbed assholes saying Yaz's arc is bad or lacks agency or sucks as gay rep Because she didn't know this till she was 20ish and didn't admit it to herself until EOTD, like honestly, at this point go take a long walk off a short pier.
The people who didn't ~see~ thasmin before it was verbally recognised are merely irritating and exhibiting heterosexual blindness, You lot are out there insulting the experiences of many very Real people because it's not good enough for you.
Literally. What you're peddling is SO awful and said with the assumed moral high ground, and all i have to offer you is one huge 'ew' at that terrible behaviour.
Look, this is not actually about Yaz, but lol, Yaz was a bullied teenager on the verge of or actively suicidal, she is not shown to have One friend and her family are actively shocked she's taken friends home in arachnids because Yaz doesn't Have friends. That Yaz did not immediately clock she was into Thirteen and thought they were just good mates actually makes perfect sense bc she doesn't know what #besties feels like to differentiate the two things. Is that depressing? yeah, but the point is yaz built herself up into the person she is in tpotd in a coming of age type story, she Does have support and friends at the end, she Does know her sexuality better by the end, she Has achieved what she wanted in being able to help people. She grew and learnt! Good for her.
It's also like, personally think that it's a more valid interpretation of the show to say that Yaz was troubled and didn't want to admit this to herself before eotd because of 13's avoidance and behaviour, rather than anything else going on. Yaz is never shown to be repressing this because of the gayness, she's worried because 13 is squirrely and they fight so much and 13 Still doesn't open up to her.
Mostly, in the end, idgaf what you think of Yaz's arc but if it's related to one type of person's discovery of their sexuality being Better than another then honestly, you need to not subject other people to your 'takes', because all you're being is cruel and you don't even have the self awareness to realise.
Watch your damn words. I don't care if somebody realised they're not straight/not cis/not whatever when they're 99 years old. To use an internet cliche, that is Perfectly Valid and a story worth telling in any kind of media out there. If you want to watch the story of a queer character in dw very secure abt their sexuality and Not on a voyage of self discovery/coming of age narrative that happens to include that Discovery, go and watch Bill's episodes and stop saying shitty things about real people not being good enough for you.

Yk, I was thinking. Buggy knew Whitebeard fairly well right? The Roger Pirates and the Whitebeard pirates crossed paths many, many times on their respective voyages. Enough that Newgate had his and Shanks's faces memorized and Buggy to know damn well that picking a fight with Ace would bring down Whitebeard's wrath. But those two crews partied as much as they fought together.
So what's Buggy going to say when Gabriel asks him about what Whitebeard was really like? Bc Crocodile sure doesn't have anything nice to say, and he rarely has anything to say at all about his past.
Well, to answer that question I have to talk about Buggy's thoughts on Whitebeard first, and I have a lot to say.
Firstly, Buggy most certainly respected the man. Whitebeard was able to clash with Roger on equal grounds, and their fights ended in draws. He was perhaps the only man who could be considered Roger's equal. That alone is enough to make anyone respect Whitebeard, but Buggy actually saw the fights. He knew Roger personally, therefore he has the best idea of how much respect Whitebeard actually deserves.
The man was a beast, and Buggy knows this from first hand experience.
But unlike Crocodile, that personal experience he had never hurt him. Buggy has no personal grudge against the man, if anything he kind of liked him (despite how terrifying he was). Whitebeard was good with kids in his own way back in the day. Not in the gentle, caring way but more like a fun, a bit crazy uncle. He always entertained Shanks and Buggy in the parties after their fights, and was one of the few adults who never questioned Roger's decision to have kids in the crew.
Well, either way, Buggy hadn't thought about the man in years and didn't really care— until Marineford. I genuinely believe Buggy's fear at seeing Whitebeard was because he thought the man wouldn't recognise him. Because if he did realise who he was, he wouldn't hurt him. Buggy was certain of that.
And he was right. Whitebeard recognised him, and didn't try to fight. If anything, he helped Buggy. And I believe 100% that it was intentional. Whitebeard's a clever man, and he knew how Buggy was as a child. One look at Buggy's scared face and the hoard of men behind him screaming for a fight was enough for him to assess the situation.
So, Buggy was throwing around empty promises about killing him to impress this group of escapees and it escalated. Right.
So, of course, after realising this, Whitebeard offered a truce— a team up. Because he knew Buggy didn't actually want to fight him. Not that he could anyway... But even if he did somehow have the power to do so, the kid wouldn't want to hurt him. He had no reason to do so. If anything, as one of the few people who remembered Roger as a man and not the King of Pirates, Buggy kind of valued Whitebeard's existence. It made him feel less alone, less like Roger's legacy could die out. That's why despite his lack of interest in the man, or the war, he was sad when he died. Another great man from the good old days, gone forever. Another part of the childhood he valued so much, wiped off the face of the earth in a second.
So, what would Buggy tell Gabe when he asks him about Whitebeard? Just the truth.
"He was a pirate."
Like his daddies, he was a pirate. And above all, he was a man. He could be kind, he could be terrifying. He did good things, but he also did bad things. He made mistakes. He pillaged and fought and killed, because that's what a pirate does. But he had a family he loved and protected to the end of the world.
Like Crocodile. Like Mihawk.
Gabriel loves his dads, but Buggy doesn't shy away from telling him that those two don't act the same way to everyone. They've done every bad thing under the sky that a pirate can do, some of which they have regrets over. They've ruined people's lives in their own way, they've fought and they've killed. Because they're pirates. Because they're men.
Just like Whitebeard.
Humanising Whitebeard doesn't wipe the trauma away of course, but it helps. It's the first step in a journey of healing for a little kid who didn't ask for any of this.
And if anyone can forgive a man they've never met, who happens to be already dead, it's a strong kid like Gabriel.

So I have this cousin who is a BTS army and also homophobic. She hates every gay romantic ship that ever exist in between BTS. She always watch the real content. Every Run BTS, Bon Voyage, Weverse Live etc. When we're tghter we sometimes talk about ship and everytime she express her disdain towards taekookers. She is aware about culties manipulated behavior. She always speak up towards those culties and I kinda admire that. Once we're having this ship talking and she said something that kinda shook me. She said 'I hate Jikook more than taekook'
And I was furious but can't say anything to her cause she doesn't know that I support gay relationship. My family is a strict religious family so it's prohibited you know. So I said why 'you hate their interaction'
Her answer is like this ' There's something between them that I can't pinpoint. It seems like they don't have any boundaries. I can tell even with my eyes closed taekook isn't real not even million years. I always find their interaction cute, brotherly or friendly . But about Jikook I'm not sure what to say. Jm always acted different when he is with Jk and so do Jk. Every member flirt with each other but Jm and Jk when they do that it makes me uncomfortable. Their flirting is suggestive not brotherly at all.' Then she also point out which bestie gift you a private journey then make a video out of it. Then there's ear sucking. Who the hell even do that. 'Comfort my best friend by sucking his ear' even straight couple don't do that.' And she is even more mad when Jm went NYC and didn't post anything, kept it private.
'Why he didn't post anything like he did with other member'
She also told me not to talk about Jm and Jk interaction 😆😆😆
She even went ia after Jk's recent live where he flirt with Jm. She said she need time to think
I hope she come around and support them😭😭😭
@toknowmebetter hi,
I'm actually glad you sent me this ask.
Just goes to show you exactly why big chunks of this fandom are just ignoring Jikook.
It's not about their hate of shipping. Some of them hate the shipping, like your cousin, who sees how demented TKKs are, JK and Tae's bond is friendship and how pushing a queer relationship on them is pure shit.
But, with Jikook it's not the shipping they can't deal with (many claim it is, but that's way easier than admitting otherwise).
With Jikook it's Jikook - JK and JM and what is between them - they just cannot deal with.
These two men are just too much for them to handle. They are too real, as in "this is not a friendship we are seeing here...this is an actual queer relationship...nope, not dealing with that..."
Their bond, their relationship, their flirting, their everything are just too much in their faces.
So they don't want to hear about the ship, but they mainly don't want to hear or see Jikook together. And when Jikook are Jikooking, they are playing the avoidance game.
Tumblr media
Her comment about JM's trip to NY, that one caught me a little off guard. Even that. JM travelling to NY and staying private about it, has them off balance. Because once again, it's so damn obvious that JM was there for JK and JK alone, and what they had was theirs and private and just MORE than a bandmate going to support another bandmate. Even that, by now, is obvious to your cousin, and I can only assume many other army.
You know, those that we have been saying for years now that simply choose to ignore JM and JK, their bond, their connection, their chemistry, their love.
This here, is exactly why their friendship isn't even mentioned. Because people have eyes and brains and see that it's sooooo much more than just a strong friendship.
So they ignore.
They don't talk about them.
They don't celebrate JM going to support JK for his solo debut in NY but they celebrate Tae going on stage at Inkigayo.
They talk about JK's lives without mentioning the Jikookery.
They take JK's words and twist them just so they don't have anything to do with JM. And then when he mentions another member it's a full blown party.
They cannot avoid JK mirroring JM's Face concept in his Seven photoshoot, so they either joke about it (JK's lazy stylists) or name call JK (thief, lazy etc.), everything but saying it's intentional and meaningful.
Your cousin there, she's (?) not any different than a big part of this fandom. And yes, it's homophobia driven. And all about the denial.
"If we don't see it or talk about it, then it's not there".
So, when Jikookers say that most of army are TKKs, I don't really agree with that. Yes, there are a lot of TKKs out there. But I think it's less about them being TKKs and more about them unwilling to deal with the fact that 2 members of their favourite band are actually a queer couple. Much of this is homophobia driven, some of it is fear. Of what it actually means for 2 out of 7 to be romantically involved.
And then, for these fans, it's easier to celebrate TKK interactions because they are safe, friendly, NOT QUEER. While Jikook are all but just friendly, and that, to that part of the fandom is like:

Tumblr media
My first voyage and treasure hunt with Emma was an extraordinarily dark reminder of my childhood dreams.
If I could, I’d erase that treasure from my memory.
But that didn’t matter to Emma, who held the box with the worthless paper and stone as though it were a precious treasure.
…I even feel a little happy about it.
That night, when everyone was asleep—
I wrapped Emma, body chilled by the night wind, in my cloak and carried her straight to the bathroom.
(She used to scream with embarrassment every time I picked her up, but now she seems to be getting used to it.)
I put Emma down and she pulled the cloak more snugly around herself.
Silvio: “Look, we’re here. Take off your clothes and get in the hot water—”
Emma: “Did you think I was going to stay quiet the whole time?”
As if timed, Emma’s hands grabbed my clothes and started pulling them up.
Tumblr media
Silvio: “Damn it, don’t do stupid stuff like ripping my clothes! Take your own clothes off, not mine.”
Emma: “I only did it so you would feel as embarrassed as me, Prince Silvio.”
(You’ve got guts, if that’s what you’re after…)
~~~~
Emma / Silvio: “……”
By the time we were soaking in the tub after stripping off each other’s clothes, we were both exhausted and remained silent for a while.
Emma turned in my arms, quietly looking up at me.
Emma: “…Please say something.”
Silvio: “…Ack.”
Emma: “That’s just a weird sound.”
Tumblr media
Silvio: “After a scuffle, all you can do is make weird sounds.”
Emma: “Fufu, sure. A little while ago we were making more noise than children.”
Silvio: “I wonder what grown-ups would do.”
(Really, what are we doing. Adding to our fatigue, we’re idiots.)
Even though that’s what I think, I don’t mind doing stupid stuff with Emma.
Suddenly her beautiful back comes into view, and I lift her thin arms to look at it.
Emma: “Umm, is something wrong?”
Silvio: “For someone who was caught in so many traps, you don’t have a single scratch.”
Emma: “I was careful because I knew someone would be overly worried about even a small scratch.”
Silvio: “That’s a good attitude, but I don’t like the way you said it.”
Emma: “Hey…”
I suck hard on Emma’s neck, making her shiver and let out sweet noises.
Tumblr media
Silvio: “I’m the only one who can leave marks on your skin.” 8823
Silvio: “If you want to go out to sea together in the future, be careful not to get any scratches.”
Emma: “I understand, ahh…ngh…”
(Hearing your sweet for just a second is all it takes.)
Tumblr media
(My reason is blown away like an idiot.)
I kiss her again and again as if trying to steal her breath and I run my hands over her breasts.
The sight of her desperately trying to respond while letting out muffled whimpers is so erotic it’s dizzying.
Emma: “Oh God…!”
Her sensitive spots were so aroused that I could see them even in the hot water, and even just lightly brushing against her insides has her trembling.
Tumblr media
(I’m sorry, but I’m already at my limit.)
Emma: “Ah, Prince Silvio… not yet, aahh…..!”
Embracing the exhausted and weak Emma, I lift her before slowly lowering her on my cock.
Her walls tightened as if to pull me deeper and I desperately try to endure being taken in all at once.
(It’s so satisfying, but it’s still not enough.)
(My desire for ‘more’ is growing, and I’m forgetting how to control it.)
(Emma tries to take it all in, which makes it even more…)
(Ha… I’m nothing but a lucky man.)
Emma smiles happily when our eyes meet, and my greed grows again.
(I can’t believe that now, I almost like to be pushed around a little bit.)
(I don’t get it, then I look at you and I don’t give a shit.) 8842
(You’re the only one who can give me the kind of weakness that comes with falling in love.)
A few days later—
(Ah…there.)
Emma had handed me a clearly handmade treasure map.
I headed to the location indicated on the map, checked the bushes, and found a wooden box with a few books in it.
(Did you really try to hide it? Even a kid would’ve thought it through a bit more.)
Or maybe this was the result of her desire that I find it.
(…well, you never know.)
The treasure hunt from a few days ago crossed my mind.
Incidentally, the stone from the treasure chest was on display in Emma’s room…
Tumblr media
I was embarrassed and tried to pick it up, but I was threatened with ‘I won’t listen to you for a month’ so I had to comply.
(Jeez, a month. That’s torture.)
(Alright. So what’s in the box…paper?)
When I opened the box, I found only a small piece of paper, which for some reason said ‘turn around’.
Tumblr media
(I don’t get it, is it some kinda riddle?)
Following the instructions, I turned around…
Emma: “Congratulations!!”
Silvio: “Uwaa, hey! Don’t hug someone while they’re turning around, their heart could stop!”
Emma: “It’s okay, Prince Silvio isn’t that weak.”
(This woman, calmly returning… hmm?)
A soft, sweet scent grazes my nose.
Silvio: “That bag in your hand, is it sweets?”
Emma: “Ah, you knew by the smell. This is the real treasure!”
Emma: “The theme is treasures of the world. I’ve made cookies for all of the treasures you’ve found so far.”
Silvio: “You get fired up over the strangest things.”
Emma: “I thought about that too, but it was already too late to turn back, so I kept going.”
Emma: “Look at this masterpiece.”
Silvio: “Did you purposely make it so elaborate?”
(This is at a level that could be turned into a sellable product.)
Emma: “Yes, Prince Silvio, say aah.”
Silvio: “I’ll eat it myself, give it to me.”
Emma: “…”
Tumblr media
Silvio: “Aah shit, fine just feed it to me! Stop lookin’ so depressed.”
Shaking off my shame, I ate the cookie offered to me.
Emma: “Do you like it?”
Silvio: “Don’t bother askin’ what you don’t need to hear.”
Tumblr media
Silvio: “…of course, it’s delicious.”
Emma: “Fufu, thank you.”
Emma looks at the box beside us.
Emma: “It makes me so happy to have people find the treasures I’ve prepared for them.”
Emma: “I think I understand a little how you felt at that moment, Prince Silvio.”
Emma: “If you get another chance, can I go out to sea with you to look for treasure?”
Silvio: “We don’t just take chances, we make them.”
Emma: “! I want to make it.”
Silvio: “Look forward to it.”
Since my childhood, my actions were always accompanied by the thought ‘to be king’.
So I didn’t realize I was yearning for the stupid, meaningless exchanges that are so normal for children.
(Now I’m able to have these stupid exchanges as I please.)
(I have someone by my side to keep me company.)
I could only get that with Emma.
Tumblr media
(Seriously… How much more are you going to make me love you?)
With a smile as bright as the sun, I desperately try to keep my mouth shut.
From now on, I’ll go out to sea many times and find many treasures.
There's a chance that I’ll find a treasure worth an entire town.
Tumblr media
(But I will never find a treasure greater than this.)
As if to be sure, I dropped a kiss on Emma, my treasure.
20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @geneeste. :) i may have done this one before, but tumblr blog search was traditionally unhelpful and i have several very important things i should be doing, so here we are <3
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 219
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 655,471
3. What fandoms do you write for?
stargate atlantis is the runaway lead, then sg-1, 90s/00s treks, the x-files, and a grab bag of other things. only two fics so far for m*a*s*h but the forecast looks good!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
no sooner met (star trek voyager, j/c, eight years of friends-to-lovers in 5k or less)
career day (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, damn that sure was a choice to go back to high school amirite)
next chapter (the good place, chidi/eleanor, the intimacy of reading)
first date (star trek voyager, j/c, falling in love again)
occupational hazards (the good place, chidi/eleanor, eleanor would rather not be the architect)
5. Do you respond to comments?
eventually!!!! i tend to keep nice ones on my home page for a while to cheer me up and then sometimes they get buried. i wake up nights like "damn the good place fandom really went all out with amazing comments on that random fic in like 2018 and i never replied," so maybe i need to go through my inbox and belatedly clear my cosmic debts.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
twilight (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, what if john didn't break the cycle). strong on style but real weak on comfort.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
weaving loose ends (stargate sg-1, sam/jack) ends with a wedding! in twenty years of writing romance fic, that has maybe only happened once?
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not yet! but the year is young.
a fic of mine did cause a dramatic fandom schism once, in the dancing with the stars fandom no less. a splinter fan group created in exile! a mod claiming to be personal friends with the stars! everybody storming out and then blocking each other! so my fic did cause hate, but somehow i personally escaped unscathed. i didn't even get blocked. (lesson: in some spaces, rpf is encouraged until They Fuck. second lesson: if you start a fire and then stay very quiet, everyone forgets about you.)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i do!! i guess!! but i'm struggling with it right now and it's giving me a complex. and "what kind" is like......... vanilla het fic for the most part tbh. gauzy curtain vibes, even. basically, i have to really sit and think about whether to rate something M or E, you know?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, but not since the x-files days. rip geocities webrings we salute you for your years of service.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, but i think i'd like to! passing chapters back and forth sleepover style like "haha write your way out of THIS" would be fun. (or collaborating in a more mundane way, i guess....)
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
john sheppard/elizabeth weir (stargate atlantis). first fic in the tag and i'm still fuckin there. three years on tv and a lifetime in my goddamn brain.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
realistically, i'm feeling pretty down on the chances that i'll ever finish ANY wip that's longer than 20k, but the two long ones withering on the vine that i'd like to finish are a sam/jack sg1 episodic soulmate fic and "what if janeway went undercover with the maquis instead of tuvok: the novel."
16. What are your writing strengths?
stealing one of geneeste's answers because "character complexity" is a good one! i don't feel satisfied with any fic unless i feel like i have learned something new about a character, or highlighted it in a new way.
my more specific strength, according to @coraclavia, is missing-scene fics that weave through an entire series canon to make a thesis statement (they are In Love).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
😭 i can't write anything long 😭 i really wish i were different 😭 i envy those of you with staying power who can return to a story after going to work or writing something else and keep plugging away at it. i used to write sprawling things when i was a teen, but since becoming Adult With Job now many years ago, i've totally lost that skill!!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
haaaahahahaha. talk about a weakness. i literally couldn't bring myself to write a fic that required dialogue in Ancient from stargate, a language that -- i cannot stress this enough -- is not even real. i'm like "well maybe i'll study latin for three years and then analyze all the episodes where they speak it to reverse engineer the differences so i can write the bastardized space latin correctly" GIRL WHY. JUST FUCK IT UP.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
first completed story that i recall would have been star trek voyager in my early teens, and by the grace of rural internet and some kind of prescient sense of self-preservation, it does not live online. first internet-published fic was several years later, for the x-files. for better or worse, that one can still be found.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
i think pieces (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, catharsis through sex pollen) might be the new best, and i had a lot of fun writing erasers on pencils (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, catharsis through truancy).
--
i am sure many of my fic-writer-meme friends have done this already but @ussjellyfish if your answers have changed since whenever you did it last; i'd love to hear how @havocthecat, @anretc, and @coraclavia would answer this; and blowing dandelion meme seeds over the fence to the mash fandom: @remyfire!
Hi Shaz, It’s my birthday today but I need cheering up. Can you hit me up with some of your favourite underrated jikook moments and why 💜💛🐰🐤 (and if people can comment some of theirs too if they have any)
First things first, HBD Anon!!!! 🎉🎉🎈🎈🎉🎊🎊🎂🎂🎂🍾🍾🍷🍷🍹🍺🍺🍸🥂🍸🥂🎂🎈🎈
Tumblr media
Smile today, don't let anyone bring you down. No matter what. 💜💜
Second of all, u guys that keep sending me asks about my ___ Jikook moments, you are killing me! It's torture. To have to choose from what we have is really hard y'all. It's not easy.
But okay, my favourite underrated Jikook moments. Let's get into it. Again, HBD!! 🎈🎈🎈
Number 1 >> Decoration tah!
Tumblr media
For the life of me I cannot explain why I love this moment as much as I do. I just know it puts the biggest smile on my face whenever it comes up in a compilation I'm watching. Idk what it is, I just think this moment is wholesome AF. And when JK reacted to it I DIED!!!! It was everything to me, i was so happy. Of course its underrated, coz they're not really doing anything. Just laughing about and having a good time enjoying each other's company. But I love 2 see it. 😍😍
Number 2>> JK preparing a plate for them and Jimin turning to JK to ask for more soup.
Tumblr media
It's so domestic 😭 Because this is how they are on their normal day to day lives. Like Jin told us; JK is Jimin's chef. And as we already saw, JK always makes sure Jimin is very well fed, always. Even blows the soup for him if it's hot and we have seen him feed Jimin many times. This moment, no one talks about, but I just really like it.
Number 3>> When JK was there for Jimin when he got nervous
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It criminal that this isn't one of the most popular Jikook moments. The way JK was giving Jimin ALL his attention. The way he was nodding along in encouragement. The way he got closer when Jimin made that mistake. The way JK didn't move back into position until he was sure Jimin had gotten back on track. This moment was e👏🏾very👏🏾thing👏🏾 and I wish we talked about it more. JK did so well as Jimin's boyfriend there. He showed up. He really fucking showed up. I respect this man so damn much for always showing up.
I enjoyed Jeonssy's analysis of this moment. You can watch it here if you like.
Number 4>>> Jimin, kneeling, doing that thing with his tongue while looking up at JK 👀
Tumblr media
I think the reason Jikookers don't talk about this moment it's because of how sexually suggestive it is. And you can see the moment Jimin catches himself too. Mans got carried away there for a second. I wasn't around for kitty gang Jimin but I believe it when people say he was wildin'. Like Jimin, please, we know you get down on your knees for the Jungkonda, we did not need a visual. 🙈🙈🙈
I high key love that moment very, very much. 🥵
Number 5>> Jungkook waiting and waiting and waiting for Jimin all because his boyfriend asked him to.
Tumblr media
Aish. Y'all don't get it. JK was among the first people who finished. This is episode 126-127. They're some of my favourite episodes that I rewatch all the time. They were so good. Anyway, Mr. Competitive finished 2nd so he was gonna go be among the first people to go home. And he was excited too! But then Mimi said 2 words: Jungkookah, wait. And that's all she wrote 🤭🤭🤭
Y'all aren't getting it. This was actually huge. I wouldn't do that for my sister and I love that bitch. If I finish a game first, and she kept losing and losing and kept me waiting for an hour I would take off. Shit, I'd take off after 20 minutes. You know who I'd wait for though? My partner 😂 Because that's just how it works. Jimin has the boyfriend privilege. Sure this was him being in charge but also this was JK listening to his man and doing exactly what he said. Now I'm thinking about Bon voyage season 4 when JK stayed by the doorway and didn't move simply because Jimin asked. Who said JK doesn't listen to Jimin again? 🤭
Anyway, JK couldn't wait to leave. We can tell by how happy he was when Jimin won rock paper scissors, and yet, he didn't mind waiting for as long as he did for Jimin who finished last. This moment is massive and I think it should be treated as such. 😔
Number 6>> When JK did this.
He probably just wanted to touch his baby. But also, it looks like he made Jimin stop. And Jimin listened and stood there and they did that adorable dance together. The dance part is not underrated. But the way JK touched Jimin is. And I absolutely love this cute, soft moment.
Number 7>> Speaking of touching. This compilation of Jikook touching on stage for the sake of touching. It's actually really subtle and kudos to the Armys who first noticed this is a thing that they do. Jikook absolutely love the stage. JK was asked when he feels most connected to the members and he said he loves when him and Jimin high five on stage. That's when he feels the most connected. He singled out Jimin even though the question was about all of them. And this thing where they touch like this for no reason whatsoever, proves his statement to be true. I freaking love them!
Number 8>> When JK was asked to rate the members and he finally put Jimin as number one. Everyone always talks about JK putting Jimin last in the past. But I'm not sure this moment gets the hype it deserves. This question was stupid AF to begin with but whatever. What I love about this moment is how JK didn't even bother to rate anyone else. He just said Jimin is the most handsome according to his own personal criteria, and then left it at that. Almost like he only cared that Jimin knew he was number one. He wanted Jimin to know he was done playing games. So rating the rest was irrelevant when he'd already made his point.
I also don't think Jimin was expecting this which is a bit sad, idk. But I'm sure he appreciated not being ranked last. Again. However i don't think that was ever going to happen. By this time JK was done pretending he didn't like Jimin on and off camera. He'd stopped pretending he didn't have feelings for him so I think many of us, much like RM, expected JK to place Jimin first at this particular juncture.
Number 9>> Gaaaaaaah! I love this so freaking much!!!! Okay so Jimin is a blusher. We know this. While when he blushes for JK it can be more intense than for other members, Jimin is a blusher. Its a thing he does. JK on the other hand, not so much. Which is why I love this so fucking much. 😍😍 My other underrated moment is JK blushing for Jimin. I literally never see people talk about this even though JK doesn't blush or get shy for anyone else apart from Jimin. I mean look at this!!!
Tumblr media
I said look at this!!! Are you looking??
Tumblr media
You guys don't listen to me. Did you see?? Especially the black swan one??? Shiet. A bashful JK? Sign me up! JK does not blush for other people. He's not a blusher. Only Jimin can make him that shy. Do y'all get it? This side of JK is reserved for Jimin and Jimin only. He's the only one that affects JK this way. Aaaaah feels. 😭😭😭 FEELS.
It's criminal, absolutely criminal that people overlook shy, blushy JK. I love to see it. I love it so much. I could watch it all day.
Last but not least. Number 10>> This.
I mean, what is wrong with you people? Honestly. By you people I mean antis because... okay first of all, lets watch the video. Not the first part where they sing to eo. That's definitely not an underrated moment. I mean the second part at the concert.
Tweet
Did you see that?
JK doing that 👆🏽 and Jimin doing this, these 2 moments sit at the same table. They outed themselves here guys. And no one was listening. They are telling us look, its him. Its him. They took risks and said fuck it. And they got away with it. Like they get away with everything else. Smh 😑
They literally outed their relationship guys. We should be freaking out more. That moment at that concert is super underrated. And it requires Eagle eyed army to see it. But damn, JK really did that. Wow.
Just wow.
Anyway anon. That's all I got for now. Happy birthday once again. If Jikook isn't real, then neither I'm I.
'David Tennant and Catherine Tate pay tribute to Bernard Cribbins after his posthumous appearance in Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, "Wild Blue Yonder." In the special, Cribbins briefly reprises his role as Wilfred Mott, the grandfather of Donna Noble (Tate) and longtime friend of the Doctor (Tennant). Sadly, Cribbins passed away on July 27, 2022, making his return as Mott his final TV appearance. He first began portraying the character in 2007 alongside Tennant's Doctor, which adds an emotional layer to their 60th anniversary reunion.
While appearing on Doctor Who: Unleashed, Tennant and Tate paid tribute to their late Doctor Who 60th anniversary co-star following the premiere of "Wild Blue Yonder." Tennant describes how "delighted" they were when they learned Cribbins was returning for the special, while Tate explained that she and Tennant had grown up watching Cribbins' works as children. Check out their statements below:
Tennant: We were beyond delighted when we knew that Bernard was going to be able to come back. It means so much to me, personally, and I think to the show as a whole, really, that he was there. That character meant so much to so many people.
Tate: Bernard will always, obviously, hold a very special place in my heart, because he always did, even before I knew him, because David and I kind of grew up with watching Bernard on TV, and he was the voice of the Wombles and loads of stuff that would define our childhood. And so having him play my grandad was amazing.
Bernard Cribbins' Doctor Who Legacy
Cribbins left behind quite a legacy following his decades-long career, in which he appeared in notable works such as The Railway Children and Frenzy. Additionally, as Tennant described, he held a special place in the Doctor Who universe. His experience with the franchise actually began back in 1966 when he starred in Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. The film wasn't canon to the Doctor Who TV series, but it was inspired by the show and marked Cribbins' first stint as a companion of the Doctor. Little did he know that over 41 years later, he'd become an official Doctor Who companion.
Cribbins first appeared in Doctor Who as Mott in the Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned." He was running a newspaper stand in London and was revealed to be one of the few residents remaining in the city over the holidays despite all the extraterrestrial happenings. The Doctor teleported away then, leaving Mott perplexed. However, that wasn't the end of the story. He returned in Doctor Who season 4, episode 1, "Partners in Crime," where it's revealed he is Donna's grandfather. With his interests in astronomy and alien conspiracy theories, he wholeheartedly supports Donna's desire to travel the world with the Doctor.
Occasionally joining their adventures, Mott fought Daleks, made daring escapes, and later helped save Donna's life by ensuring she wouldn't remember the Doctor. However, he was drawn to the Doctor again in "The End of Time" and became his temporary companion. Ultimately, the Doctor sacrifices his life to save Mott, a decision the Time Lord never regretted. "Wild Blue Yonder" brings Mott's story full circle as it's revealed his faith in the Doctor never wavered. His Doctor Who story ends with his reunion with the Doctor and his hope that the world will be saved again.
Note
Showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed Mott will be mentioned in the final Doctor Who 60th anniversary special, but he won't appear onscreen as Cribbens only filmed one scene.'
Favourite One Piece openings and/or just songs in general?
You can't ask this to a music student and guitarist/singer! I can't choose! there are too many good songs in this anime-
Sogeki no Shima deeee. Umareta Ore waaa. Hyaappaaatsu Hyaku Chu. Lulu Lala Luuuuuu. Nezumi no Medama mo (Lock on!!) Omae no Haato mo (LOCK OOOON!!!) SOOOGEKI NO SHIMA KARA KITA OTOKOOOO LULULU LULU LALAAA SOOOOREEEENIIIGEEEEROOO Sogege Soge Soge SOOGEEEKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING
Okay, no, jokes aside (it isn't a joke. I genuinely ADORE Sogeking's theme) my true rankings (No. I'm not writing essays about them. This post would be too long. If you're curious about my genuine long opinions about a song, send an ask bc otherwise this post will be too long):
Openings:
Crazy Rainbow (this is the song I want all of you to think about when you think about me because it's MY song. I LOVE IT. It's me. It talks about me, actually. I am crazy and I'm a rainbow and a star. Twinkle twinkle rainbow star!!! I heard it once and it became my favorite ever. It's my alarm. I wake up with this banger every day. My friends hate me for this take but honestly, they're the ones who don't appreciate a good set of trumpets and guitars with tropical imagery as background).
Hope (The chorus is WILD. The visuals are so comforting it makes me cry every time. This is the energy I want all of my fanfics to have. It's the representation of my writing turned into music, I think. These are the vibes I want. The lyrics??? Are fucking insane??? Also, Sanji-themed, and it hits close to home).
We go! (I don't need to explain this one, but I wanted to mention that the way he screams BRRREAK OF ROMANCE DAWWWWN rewired my brain completely and that lyric appears on my mind every damn day)
Jungle P (Average opening. Not even that good. It's just cool and happy. HOWEVER! Have you considered that LIFE IS ADVENTUROUS BE AWARE IT'S DANGEROUS WHO'S GONNA BE ONE OF US AND THE TRIP GOES ON BECAUSE WE DA PIRATE OF THE MASS TO THE WEST TO THE EAST GONNA FIND MY WAY SAIL AWAY ALL THE WAY TO ONE PIECE)
Brand New World (The energy this song has makes me literally want to scream in the happiest of ways. The chorus, man, it's insane).
Hikari E (The Catalan Dub makes it better. I'm staying loyal to my native language this time. This is fucking amazing in Catalan. The lyrics are so fucking good they make me want to cry. It's very dear to me, too).
The peak (Really cute! Fun! Such a relief opening to end Wano <3 It's just beautiful visually and stunning. But also it has such peaceful and joyful vibes!! My beloved).
Kokoro No Chizu (This one is awesome. I love everything about it. My fav thing about it is my reaction to watching OP with full screen for the first time. Really fun experience of 'what the fuck is this and also THIS SONG IS A BANGER??')
Bon Voyage (Also my alarm because no other thing besides BON VOYAAAGE being yelled against my ear wakes me up in a better mood. Also, really fun opening. The chorus are basically the best part, ofc, for obvious reasons).
Believe (Once again saying this one hits different in the Catalan Dub. The lyrics are beautiful but also it gives sooo many 2000s opening vibes. I enjoy this song every time)
Endings:
Raise (I am not explaining this one because I think it's obvious why it deserves top 1)
Run! Run! Run! (Who the fuck is focusing on the song when Sanji being silly is right there???!?!??! Fun fact, I had a whole ass moment when I saw this ending for the first time and I had to take a break from watching the show because I went on a full crazy spiral of 'Sanjisanjisannijssnaisanjisanjisansajisanjisanji'. But also, really great song and it makes my brain go brrrrr).
Shouchi no Suke (BROOO THE VIBESSSSS THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD I COULD LISTEN TO THIS FOR HOURS)
Dear Friends (This one makes me want to k word myself so I think that's a very good way to express how fucking good this ending is and how much it hurts me every time)
Eternal Pose (I am vibing. I like vibing. It's the vibes only).
Free Will (I want to hug Robin so tight. This one makes me so emotional. I am in so much pain, please).
(Not even a top 10, this was supposed to be a top 5 but I couldn't leave Free Will behind).
Character songs (with little to no explanation because I work tomorrow and I have to go to sleep but I want to post this now):
River of Freedom (I want to fuck Sabo nasty after hearing this and I am so not ashamed of posting this publicly. My thoughts aren't in the bible).
Dr. Heart Stealer (I want to fuck this man to oblivion and I am a lesbian and asexual. Imagine how hot you have to be for this to happen).
47 Todoufuken Gen Ima Cruise (Yakko Warner would love this).
Hajimari to Owari no Machi (They put drugs in this one).
Girls ni Kubittake (I like submissive Sanji).
Smile for Freedom (I kin Nami)
Save My Heart (The depression of some is the fav song of others)
Headliners (Kidlaw sex)
Usopp Drop (I am in love with Usopp)
Moulin Rouge (I am in love with Sanji)
Beauty and the Borg – A B7 Shipper’s Manifesto
So. We’ve come here in my life where I just need to talk about ships I love and everyone has to see this. Only not but whatever. I’m gonna try to break this down old school in how I remember shippers manifestos in livejournal days, complete with images. And thus to begin:
What is Star Trek: Voyager?
Unless you live under a rock you’ve probably just heard of Star Trek, maybe not watched it but heard of it. Starting in 1966 the Original Series was released, ran for three years, was canceled due to an infamous error in Neilson ratings and established the franchise. There was an animated series people often forget about, six movies for the Original series, and then in 1987 they brought it back as a live action show called Star Trek: The Next Generation. It did so well and engrained itself in the conscious of many people that they often refer to it as the best Trek but believe me that’s a debate on it’s own. And thus had it’s own spin off, Deep Space Nine in 1993. While not as popular as TNG it’s grouped into what people call the 90s Trek. With the last one being the last spin off in 1995: Star Trek: Voyager.
Where DS9 introduced the first black captain (though it took three years for him to get that promotion, boo), VOY introduced the first female captain lead of a Star Trek series. The premise of the show was that on a hunt for some resistance fighters both ships are pulled through the Alpha Quadrant to the Delta Quadrant. Approximately seventy-thousand light years from home. Due to the choice made by the captain, Kathryn Janeway, they are then stranded there and the crews of the ships band together on Voyager to make their way back to the Alpha Quadrant and get home.
That’s an extreme simplification but basically Lost in Space for Star Trek.
And that leads us to the characters of this essay:
B’Elanna Torres - The Engineer Who Built This Society
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A half-human, half-klingon Maquis born to John Torres (human) and Miral (Klingon). She and her mother were the only Klingons on the colony where they lived and as such B’Elanna was teased and made fun of at school. Her father eventually couldn’t take being married to a Klingon and left her and her mother, an incident which left B’Elanna worrying was her fault being half Klingon.. She was then raised on the Klingon homeworld until she left to join Starfleet Academy…
And quit it.
Basically she couldn’t find herself fitting in yet again and left to once again find her place which brought her to the Maquis.
The Maquis were a group of resistance fighters, depending who you ask of course, that fought for the freedom of species, mostly Bajor, from Cardassian rule. They were considered to be a threat by the Federation and hunted down by both Cardassians and the Federation. B’Elanna was only in the group roughly for a year before the incident that stranded them in the Delta Quadrant occurred. She did think of that group as her family though and felt both indebted to them and loved them.
Tumblr media
While on Voyager she became Chief Engineer and was damn fucking good at it but let’s get into the heart of her character here. B’Elanna suffers from depression over the course of the series and self doubt when it comes to herself while not at the job. She pushes people away while simultaneously hoping they’ll stay anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She pushes herself to her limits, trying to see if she’s enough and never really finding that answer. She also struggles with a connection to both her parents and her cultures; coming more to terms with the Klingon culture as time goes on and also striking up conversation with her father again. She’s also a big romantic who reads romance novels.
Tragically that kicks off her romance with Tom Paris and they eventually get married and have a kid together and even then B’Elanna worries for her child who will still look Klingon. She doesn’t want her kid to have to go through what she did and suffer for it. In the end she chooses to accept her child will look like her as a Klingon but it’s clear the thought will linger on for her regardless.
She’s blunt and sarcastic and brash, takes no shit, and loves her friends very very deeply.
 Seven of Nine - What I Want is to be Useful
Tumblr media
Seven of Nine didn’t come in until season 4 of Voyager. Basically here because of sexism and the writers wanting that sweet sweet sex appeal. She was a human, once called Annika Hansen born to Magnus and Erin Hansen. Her parents were scientists who were studying the Borg and took their daughter along with them for…reasons. Look it wasn’t very smart.
Lo and behold the Borg caught on to the fact they were being watched and assimilated Seven and her family. At the time she was only six and thus spent most of her life in a borg cube, as such she has a…unique take on cultures.
Tumblr media
She ended up on Voyager because Voyager made a deal with the Borg to get through their area of space. Then Janeway cut her connection to the Borg and Seven was left floundering and suddenly alone. The Borg are a hive mind type species and she’d had that for over twenty years of her life. The shock left her reeling though she’d hardly admit it.
Seven is a complicated character in a lot of aspects, the series generally tries to explore her gaining her independence and learning about herself and where she fits in. It’s not perfect and often clumsily written, especially when it comes to the Doctor teaching her. They do push a lot of gender ideas as well which haven’t aged well. And leave her in those terrible catsuits. She also, due to her stubbornness, butts heads with a lot of the characters as she’s trying to figure this out.
Tumblr media
(Seven also shows up later in the Picard series but I am only talking about her as she pertains to Voyager in this essay.)
Unlike B’Elanna she’s not really a romantic though the show does give her romance options including setting her up with Chakotay right at the end for…also reasons. And where B’Elanna only takes the mother position towards the end of the show Seven actually has a character who is like her son, another ex-Borg named Icheb introduced in season 6. As well as looking after Naomi Wildman (first baby on Voyager, we all love her) who she admits is family.
For all the imperfect writing they have about her I’ll give them that.
Seven is logical and cold, sure in her abilities and has a drive for perfection.
A Collective of Two - B7
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To say these two don’t get along at first is an understatement. B’Elanna is mistrusting of Seven and Seven looks down on B’Elanna. They both see each other as stubborn and rude and want the other out of the way while they work (See Scientific Measure in which they argue in a Jefferies Tube and Message in a Bottle where B’Elanna does a full call out on Seven). At one point (Day of Honor) B’Elanna even asks Seven if she regrets everything she did as Borg, assimilating other cultures, and Seven says no. Granted if she asked that again to season seven Seven (har har) the answer would be far more complicated.
Seven comes to value her independence and individuality across the series. She comes to see the Voyager crew as her collective. In one episode (called One, I’m on a roll here, let me have this.) Seven is left alone while the rest of the crew is in stasis. The EMH is around but even he gets disrupted and Seven is by herself on the ship with only her hallucinations and herself to talk to. It’s the end of the episode that stands out here.
Tumblr media
In the beginning of the episode she approaches B’Elanna and Harry and well, annoys them. She doesn’t see an issue with this and is not here for friendship. The end of the episode she approaches them again, and I guess Tom is there too, whatever, and asks to sit with them. When they say yes she sits down next to B’Elanna and admits she felt the need for companionship. It’s a huge step with Seven seeking others out.
On the other side is B’Elanna the episode right before that, Demon. She isn’t allowed to go down to a planet to look for her friends because Chakotay is worried she isn’t a ‘cool head’ that’s needed for this assignment. After a bit of a fight it’s then that B’Elanna requests Seven go then in her place, after all “Nobody’s head is cooler than hers”. An insult and a compliment in one, B’Elanna and Seven’s relationship in a nutshell. But the point here is that B’Elanna has come to trust Seven. Towards the end of season four there’s a measure of respect between them and acknowledgement of each other’s skills.
(Also see Message in a Bottle, when B’Elanna first approves of a plan Seven sets forth. And waits till no one is in the room to see her do it.)
Which brings us to the end of season four. Voyager has potentially found a way home (spoiler alert: there’s three more seasons. They have not.) and at one point B’Elanna and Seven are working together on the other ship which prompts a conversation about Earth. Seven during the conversation points out that B’Elanna seems eager to return, which B’Elanna denies. Then as Seven says it “You were a member of the Maquis. Starfleet Command will no doubt hold you responsible for a multitude of crimes. You will find nothing on Earth but adversity.” And we get the following scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course then B’Elanna plays it off as a joke later but the line still stands out to me. It truly does show how the two of them view themselves. B’Elanna isn’t accepted because she’s half-Klingon or because she’s a Maquis. Seven isn’t accepted because she’s ex-Borg or, in the words of B’Elanna, she’s rude. While they’ve carved out an area of acceptance on Voyager that doesn’t mean it extends beyond that.
Earth is an unknown for the both of them at this time. They’re more alike and are starting to see that even if they won’t admit it. Yet.
Of course, they’re also still not about to admit it in season five.
Season five has a…bad episode in it called Infinite Regress that regrettably I have to talk about. In it Seven is taking on other personalities from people who she assimilated over the years. At one point she takes on a male Klingon and, well. Tries to mate with B’Elanna which includes biting her on her cheek. The only saving factor of that episode is that it starts the Seven and Naomi friendship and also this line:
Tumblr media
That’s it.
Honestly season five isn’t the best for B7 stuff, there’s a few scenes like in Extreme Risk when B’Elanna is going through some major depression and Seven comes to her to discuss a project or even in the Course: Oblivion episode though sadly that’s not actually them but clone selves. And I say that with an absolute straight face even as a snicker about it. Turns out you can forget you’re a clone but can’t forget you’ve got chemistry with each other.
Tumblr media
Sure girl. Tell her that after she just got married, just say you wanna open her relationship to include you already.
There is however one fun and stand out scene towards the end of season five, see it turns out Seven has been stalking B’Elanna (and Tom) to study mating rituals. Honestly, worst choice there, Seven. Needless to say, B’Elanna notices and doesn’t take this “study” well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s nice to see not all the antagonism is gone. But they still have time to reach an understanding! Sorta. Also that episode is Someone to Watch Over Me. Don’t watch it, that’s the only good scene.
I gotta add one scene however from Relativity even if B’Elanna isn’t in the scene herself. Tom approaches Seven to team up for a ping pong match and of course Seven isn’t interested. Until B’Elanna is brought up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Seven. Babe just say you wanna impress B’Elanna.
And thus we go to season six.
Okay I’ll be honest, this season doesn’t have a lot for them either. Season four and seven are standouts in their interactions imo. And since this is my essay it’s all my opinion. I blame the het ships they were both forced in.
But in Survival Instinct they do get a nice scene together. In the episode Seven is suffering having come into contact with her old unimatrix and remembering something she did. She can’t fully piece it all together and it’s shaken her up. At one point B’Elanna tries to comfort her while they’re going over data and Seven snaps back that she has no feelings about the past. And then clearly regrets it, something season four Seven absolutely wouldn’t care about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a show of how far they’ve both come. B’Elanna offering comfort to Seven and Seven acknowledging that her words hurt B’Elanna. It’s a small subtle scene that makes me really happy.
There’s a few other scenes here and there too, in The Voyager Conspiracy Seven once comms B’Elanna right as she wakes up and I just find that funny. Like sure, don’t wait till you’re on shift. A moment in Tsunkatse where B’Elanna jokes about Borgs and fun to Seven. And then in Fury when Kes gets to engineering there’s a blink and you’ll miss it scene where B’Elanna reaches back to pass Seven a phaser and they’re both just very in sync in the scene. And then B’Elanna dies and Seven sees it :( at least it’s all undone in the end. She’s fine. Death in Star Trek: Voyager is a punch card honestly; punch it ten times and get a free replacement from another reality. (Sorry Harry)
That ties up that season in a tragically low point for them but that’s okay because it’s season seven.
Season seven was the last one Voyager had. B’Elanna marries Tom and gets pregnant, Seven gets into a bit of a rushed relationship with Chakotay right at the end. Voyager finally gets home but these two are gay between them and the joke’s on the Voyager writers. Unlike them I can pretend Tom/B’Elanna never happened at all.
Right at the start is the episode Imperfection where a Borg implant Seven has is failing and she must face the fact she might die. In response she chooses to work, as she says “What I want is to be useful.” And for that she chooses not to go to her usual post in Astrometrics but to hide out in Engineering. So I could infer that Engineering, and thus B’Elanna who is in charge of it, is a safe space for her. That’s made even more clear when B’Elanna finds her and they have a talk about life and legacy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s an incredibly soft and meaningful scene, where B’Elanna expresses that Seven has made an impact on everyone (herself quietly included). It’s interrupted by the Doctor finding them but that leads to B’Elanna coming to Seven’s defense and saying she can stay in Engineering. B’Elanna will keep an eye on her.
Tumblr media
Unlike at the end of season four where B’Elanna lumps them together as outcasts and then jokes about it, this time she is completely serious. She has Seven’s back, they are “[the] difficult patients” who are in this together after all. Sadly that’s the last they interact this episode however brief it was it really goes to show how they’ve come together as a unit and a friendship.
There’s a few more scattered moments in season seven episodes, in Drive Seven is the one who convinces B’Elanna to accept Tom’s hobbies. Like she needs to. Look I’m not bitter (lies). In Lineage when B’Elanna finds out she’s pregnant and stumbles Seven is the one to reach out to steady her and deliver that news to her. It’s almost funny that Icheb is also there and once had a crush on B’Elanna, like wrong ex-Borg Voyager writers.
This does lead us to Human Error though, which has quite a few more moments with them but also sadly the last time they really interact.
In the episode Seven has been taking advantage of the holodeck to imagine different moments, including herself without Borg implants. One of the moments is B’Elanna’s baby shower though they don’t interact there. Instead Seven misses the real baby shower and awkwardly arrives at engineering with a belated gift for B’Elanna.
Tumblr media
It’s cute, Seven’s really trying to connect here. And then keeps trying to connect.
Tumblr media
Girl…I don’t have time (okay I do) to explain how gay this is. Seven could have chosen anyone on the ship and choses to try to connect with B’Elanna here. Including noting her appearance and asking about it. Of course the funniest thing is B’Elanna’s side eye after the fact.
Tumblr media
Of course the scene is meant to be humorous, look how Seven once again struggles to connect to people but I chose to take it at face value here. Every other time it’s been B’Elanna reaching out to connect with Seven and this time it’s Seven reaching out to connect with her. They’re both trying in their own weird way.
The episode ends without further interaction but there is one moment at the end:
Tumblr media
Like the Tom moment above I just think it’s funny that people are out here like ‘no Seven you should come. B’Elanna is there :)’
And that’s it. That’s the B7 in canon moments broken down. So let’s talk more about them because I can’t shut up.
Okay so like…why?
For the past oh…seven years I’ve been talking about B7 on my blog probably too much. I just think they’re neat! But now comes the time to explain that and I’m not the best at words but I’ll try.
For me it’s about the mirror they are to each other. Both are characters struggling with identity and where they fit in in a world that doesn’t want to fit them in. They’re extremely capable and smart but flawed. Whether the show writers realized it or not they made these two characters so similar and set up exploration of that and then just…never delivered.
I want the exploration there, I want to dive into what it means to see someone as a reflection of yourself but then acknowledge the good parts they have like when B’Elanna encourages Seven about her legacy and what an impact she has. Does she know that she has that same legacy? Does she even know she has those same doubts?
For two characters who are vastly different in personality there’s just so much they share and can share. They’re both disillusioned with Starfleet and people and yet trying. They’re put into boxes by society and just can’t fit. They’re done bad by the writers in pretty fucking horrible effect.
There’s a trilogy of books called Voyager String Theory, really only the first two are important in the context of B7 though. In the first book they crash land on a planet and at one point Seven has to give B’Elanna some borg nanoprobes to help her heal.
Tumblr media
“We would be the collective- a collective of two.” Seven tells her. That alone struck me as how the two of them could be. Outcasts together. Difficult Patients. A Collective of Two.
(Also that book has a lot more gay points in it, please read it:
Tumblr media
Like, c’mon.)
It shows the potential of them and while Picard really killed, hm, a lot of things, I always wanted to imagine a future where they got back to Earth and were that Collective. Dealing with this new area together. Oh sure they’d get on each other’s nerves, part of the fun for me is that I don’t think they’d ever really lose that antagonism, but after everything they’ve been through you can see how they’ve come to respect and count on each other.
TL;DR…90s trek writers accidentally made it gay again.
Supplemental
I’ll be honest, I have a tendency not to read fics of pairing I myself write because I’m terrified I might subconsciously take something from another writer without even realizing it in that same area of fanfic. So instead I’ll rely on two others fic rec lists:
https://trillscienceofficer.tumblr.com/post/706359122066636800/trillscienceofficers-belannaseven-fic-rec-list
https://punkbxt.tumblr.com/post/622585834575626240/b7-fics-that-i-read-over-and-over-again-without
I am in fact on there twice (favourites and you’ve got my number are mine) sooo feel free to ignore those if you’ve had enough of my writing at this point.
For other things I’d suggest punkbxt on tumblr for their amazing b7 art and comics. Again please read Voyager: String Theory at least the first book. It is gay.
There are also far far better people at putting things into words then me on good old hellsite dot com so honestly just go through the b7 tag. I wouldn’t recommend the character tags themselves though. Trust me.
If you made it this far then thank you for reading and I hope I could nudge you a little bit in the B7 direction (and thanks to @trillscienceofficer for all the help on this). Live fast and prosper~
Look, I get that as a Star Trek fan, I should be happy. Oooh, look at all the new Trek that's coming!
But there are lines in this story that make me obscenely, indescribably, unrationally outraged.
“We take it very seriously,” says David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “‘Star Trek’ is one of the most valued, treasured and to-be-nurtured franchises in all of media.”
WELL YOU HAVE A FUNNY WAY OF SHOWING IT!
Paramount's stewardship of Trek post-Roddenberry has always annoyed me but this quote shows how tone-deaf these people are. Through their actions they show that when they mean valued, they mean profitable and what they can get out of it. When they mean treasured, they mean it's to be mined for gold and leveraged for our own ends, not the good of the franchises. And nurtured? How? With money? Yes, I'd say they're pouring more into Star Trek then ever before, but also why does everyone working on Trek feel they need to make clear the franchise is good value for money? Case in point from the story: "That tension isn’t exclusive to the film studio. I lost count of the number of times someone made a point to note, with real pride, how one or the other of the “Star Trek” TV productions is saving money, whether it be “Section 31” repurposing sets from “Discovery” or “Strange New Worlds” redressing the same set to be everything from crew quarters to a sparring gym. No one will get specific about budgets, but Kurtzman says that “Section 31” costs “so much less than you’d ever make a ‘Star Trek’ movie for.”"
Are they nurturing the fan base? How exactly? The article goes into great detail about how well Trek is doing on Paramount+ but fails to mention that Paramount+ itself is not doing well. Why are you hiding Trek away on a platform few people use? Because like Voyager on UPN in the 90s, Trek is THE DRAW. But you can't draw new fans on a platform no one is watching. How many people discovered the old Trek shows because they were/are on platforms people can access easily? You own a legacy TV network? Why isn't at least ONE of the Trek shows predominantly on CBS? Then you can use it as a taste at least to get people to sign up and see the others? Then there's the haphazard way they handle merchandising and licensing for the new products. You have amazing new series. How are you getting them into the hands of young people? Even Prodigy didn't air on Nickelodeon right away. As a result, you have this greying of the franchise issue.
"I ask “The Next Generation” star Jonathan Frakes, who’s acted in or directed more versions of “Star Trek” than any other person alive, how often he meets fans for whom the new “Star Trek” shows are their first. “Of the fans who come to talk to me, I would say very, very few,” he says. “‘Star Trek’ fans, as we know, are very, very, very loyal — and not very young.”" Paramount needs to change tact. Take a page from Disney/Lucasfilm. Sure, they are certainly trying to turn Star Wars into the proverbial dead horse to be beaten, but the Star Wars generational legacy is secure.
They need to stop speaking in platitudes. You say Trek is valued? Then SHOW IT.
Let Trek fly in the mainstream.
Give it a wider net to catch new fans.
Actually show faith in it, rather than using it as an IP for making money. Be more accessible.
Oh and fix your damn licensing on Deep Space Nine and GET ME MORE MERCH TO BUY!
I certainly won't be reading all 123, but since I can sort the list by release date it helps me keep track of new releases. Unfortunately, 123 is so many that half of them I don't even remember adding them or what they're about, so I decided to boil it down to 10 most anticipated new books and 10 sequels.
