Non Sihtric related but my horror side jumping out under the cut
We found a not legal way to watch Late Night With The Devil and I'm fucking SCREECHING!!!!! I've been so excited for this movie, but Europe still has no release date planned and it's driving me mad. So bless Danas, he got it for me and we're going to watch it now! 😭🙏
(Also if this movie gets a theater release here I'll probably go see it again. Goths supporting goths and all that).

If there is one actor in my entire life that I'd always pointed out in movies and shows saying "Hey, I know that guy." That guy is David Dastmalchian. How he managed to appear in every movie and show I like for a small part I just don't know.

david dastmalchian shows up in the blurry background of oppenheimer before he's even identified as a named, plot-relevant character and when he first appeared for that sweet sweet 1-second background shot i jUMPED in my seat. i was like ohmygod my BOY is THERE. it's hIM. and for the rest of the film i was on the edge of my seat, not really because of the plot, but because i reacted like a jumpscare whenever he showed his dumb face. thank you for your concern i am very normal™.

Update 4/24: watched LNWTD, it rules
No I haven’t seen Late Night With the Devil yet but I plan to remedy that ASAP!
I’ve always wanted to paint David Dastmalchian. He has such a unique and beautiful face. I remember seeing him in The Dark Knight and being like “who is this guy???” and it’s been a joy over the years watch him go (for me) from “hey it’s That Guy playing the weirdo in this movie!” to getting more and more big and prominent roles.
And now he’s got a leading role in a horror flick that’s getting kickass reviews and I love that.

'We often talk of comeback years, with actors returning to the scene after an extended hiatus or an unintended drop in bookings, but just as worthy of celebration are the cases of a quiet, exponential rise. Sometimes, a name reaches household status by way of an explosive debut, while other names slowly ecru credit after credit for commendable performances, until the subject of occasional recognizability becomes the frequent favorite. David Dastmalchian is the epitome of such a case.
He's had the biggest 2023 out of anyone, showing no signs of slowing down ahead. From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the latest Christopher Nolan banger, Dastmalchian's year has stretched across just about every kind of scale and genre an actor could want, with parts in some of the year's biggest movies...
Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' Marks a Powerful Collaboration
While Dastmalchian won't be closing out the year with a reprisal in Dune: Part Two, considering his character's fatal demise in the first film, it's safe to say that he would have if his character lived on. One of his greatest strengths is his evident desirability, with filmmakers asking him for project after project. His portrayal of Piter de Vries, one of the sinister House Karkonnen's Mentats, was the third collaboration between Dastmalchian and director Denis Villeneuve. After first working together on 2013's menacing thriller Prisoners, the pair reunited for two incredible blockbuster follow-ups: Blade Runner 2049 and Dune: Part One.
This is a common occurrence in Dastmalchian's career and a key element of his well-earned success. Arguably the best example of this came this year with Oppenheimer, Dastmalchian's second Christopher Nolan film, arriving over a decade after their first outing together. Most people that have had their "I know that guy" moment over the past few years could likely trace that thought back to 2008's The Dark Knight, the crown jewel of Nolan's Batman trilogy and the first feature film of Dastmalchian's career...
Aside from The Dark Knight and the Ant-Man franchise, Dastmalchian played a pivotal role as Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad in 2021 (collaborating with Gunn once again after working together on The Belko Experiment), and further adding to his gloriously bloated 2023, Dastmalchian had another superhero-centric entry with Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham...
Dastmalchian, as you may have noticed, has a history of playing incredibly dark supporting roles, a track record that began with The Dark Knight...'

Saw Late Night with the Devil
And I liked it a lot, but didn't come without complaints. A movie with this type of gimmick really needed to be filmed with film, and not on a Sony Venice. Everything to try to make it look like old television was done in post. They did as good of a job as you could with it, but for someone who has watched a lot of television from that era, it was definitely off. The use of CGI for all the effects really pulled you out of the experience as well. Shooting this project in digital was already stretching it, then even more digital work further removed you from what they were trying to accomplish. There was also a lot of modern technique with the physical camera work itself. That being another aspect that took you out of this world a bit. That being said, just taking the work for what they gave you, no complaints at the people operating their equipment. Also the use of AI art... ehh. I know they had real artists and they did the editing work with the AI art, but I ask why did you even go that route when you had real people working on it? On a positive note, the acting and the story was really good. It was a lot of fun and felt pretty authentic on that side of things. Jack, Lily, and Carmichael stood out the most. I can see Ingrid Torelli (Lily) getting a lot more work after this. And it was GREAT to see David Dastmalchian in a leading role. I've never not enjoyed him in anything I've seen. He's is ab absolute delight. In closing, I definitely recommend this, flaws and all. I'm going to watch it again in a few days because a lot of things always read better on a second viewing.

Late Night with the Devil
Sometimes a trailer is enough to get you hooked on a films premise and draw you in. That is what Late Night with the Devil did. It gave enough of the premise away that you want to sit down and watch the movie and it certainly did deliver.
It wonderfully recreates the aesthetic of the 70s talk shows. During the 70s the world was fearful of changes and was skeptical of everything that didn't align with a traditional 9-5 lifestyle. This film is presented in that style because it perfectly blends found footage genre with psychological horror aspects.
This film succeeds thanks in large part due to David Dastmalchian and his charismatic performance as talk show host Jack Delroy. Jack is locked in a coveted battle for ratings with real life legend Johnny Carson. Don't worry the events of this film are entirely fictional they just added Carson for context. Jack having recently lost his wife to a battle with cancer will do almost anything to achieve that success.
Dastmalchian plays the middle ground perfectly as Jack trots out guests connected to the supernatural on a spooky Halloween edition of his Night Owls talk show. He even has a known skeptic on the show.
Tumblr media
The ultimate guest comes later in the show and the film provides enough tension leading up to that moment you will be on the edge of your seat. Ingrid Torelli as a young girl believed to be possessed by a supernatural entity is a scene stealer. She has the creepiest scenes in the movie and her performance elevates the film from a wild ride to an instant classic. Before her entry into the film the middle ground truly was the exploration. Her role in the film is meant to show that the wildest of all conspiracy theories known to man are possible and the film is that much better for being willing to explore those themes. Without spoiling the ending it takes two different directions that were very much unexpected but thrilling none the less.
The final 15 minutes of this film are truly breathtaking in the way it is presented and the way it uses visual cues instead of needing to tie everything up in dialogue. If you enjoy films that dabble in the occult and challenge the status quo of a genre then this film is for you.
