Hanging by a Thread - DBH REWRITE Chapter Two
[Detroit: Become Human MASTERLIST]
Previous Chapter / Next Chapter
Summary: After they failed to catch the deviants they were after and protecting Connor from getting destroyed if he tried to run after them on the highway, they had a casual chat over lunch until Connor was sent a report on another potential deviant not far from where they were having lunch. The outcome of this second chase of the day was much more unexpected than initially thought by the three of them, especially for the perfect android that was Connor, and by far.
Words: 3.9k
Warnings: DBH spoilers (especially chapter 15 : The nest), sarcasm, chase down, angst, life or death situation, first hint of deviancy, more angst

Hank drove past the fast-food stand and pulled over, parking the car along the sidewalk, right across the street from the Chicken Feed. The rain had been falling non-stop ever since they chased this deviant and the little girl, but were ultimately unsuccessful in catching them, because Hank kept Connor from running after them on the highway. It had gotten the young woman thinking about this, for a moment, Hank and she had felt like their partner was human and the Lieutenant acted like he would have actually died but she knew they were both aware it wouldn’t have been the case. He was just a walking piece of plastic who had been assigned to them as their partner, not a human whose life they had to care about, at least she thought. Charlie had opted for the hooded sweatshirt she had put in her car, with the hood pulled over her head, and her police officer uniform jacket over, to protect against the rain since it was waterproof. Her hoodie was more comfortable and warmer than the tee-shirt she previously wore anyway.
She was typing a text to her mom when she saw her dad park the car. She looked down at her phone screen and just turned it off, looking away. The last contact she had with her mother probably dated back to her birthday, two months ago. You couldn't say their relationship was at its best, but it wasn't unusual for Charlie. Since her little brother died and she got out of the hospital, she made her mother feel left alone when she chose to stick with her father, but Charlie resented her for leaving him in the first place. What happened wasn't his fault, so he wasn't to blame and yet that's exactly what her mother did, out of grief for sure but he didn't deserve such a treatment. At least, his daughter didn't give up on him. Hank got out of the car without a word and so did she, ignoring Connor sitting on the back of the car. She swept those thoughts away in a sigh and followed her father out of the car, ignoring Connor sitting on the backseat of the car and as he always did, he just watched them silently.
“Whooa! Hey! Hey! Hey!” He grabbed Charlie’s arm and stretched out his hand as a driverless taxi came their way and it slowed down until they passed.
“Hank. How’ you doing?” Gary asked, busying himself in his truck.
“Eh, you know, same old shit.” Hank shrugged and the tall man looked at Charlie with a warm smile.
“Always amazes me how much you’ve grown, kid. Look at these bright blue eyes, you must have guys lining up.” Charlie laughed, more out of embarrassment than because it was funny though.
“Yeah, well, wherever they are they can wait. I’m just 25. ‘m not gonna get married tomorrow.” She joked and Hank nodded.
“Good answer.” She chuckled and rolled her eyes, like she used to do as a teenager, and he said something that would annoy her. Gary laughed with them, and he turned around to make his burger.
“Plastic with you?” He asked.
“Only temporary…” Hank affirmed heavily, like it was some death sentence. Charlie crossed her arms over her chest, looking down the street when Pedro, a friend of her father’s came up to him and hugged each other. She noticed Connor walk across the road to join them and rolled her eyes again, pacing on her arm with her finger. The android glanced at her and joined his hand behind his back and stood equidistant between her father and her, looking around with that emotionless facial expression that seemed frozen on his face, but that was normal after all, it was just a piece of plastic mimicking humans. Charlie looked at Connor from the corner of her eyes; the little LED on his temple turned yellow as he observed the man her father was talking with. It was really a thing he always did to watch people. She wondered how much he could see by doing whatever it was he was doing, and she wondered what had shown up when he looked at her back at the police station.
“Hey! You won’t regret this!” Pedro assured Hank and as he walked past Charlie, he gave her a warm smile. The now young woman and police officers was rather well-known among her father friends. Connor then stepped forward and went right next to Hank and the latter sighed heavily.
“What is your problem? Don’t you ever do as you’re told? Look, you don’t have to follow me around like a poodle!” Connor seemed confused when he looked away and Charlie cleared her throat to contain a laugh. The android sometimes made the situation so awkward it was becoming funny.
“I’m sorry for my behavior back at the police station.” Connor said. “I didn’t mean to be unpleasant.”
“Oh, wow…” She chuckled softly, shooting up her eyebrows. It took Charlie a second to realize that she had had the exact same reaction as her father to Connor’s apology.
“You’ve even got a brown-nosing apology program!” He turned his head to Connor for an instant before looking straight ahead at Gary again. “Guys at Cyberlife thought of everything, huh?”
“Sure did.” Charlie nodded and noticed Connor’s LED going yellow again when Gary handed to Hank his drink and burger.
“Here you go.”
“Ah! Thanks, Gary. I’m starving…”
“Don’t leave that thing here!” Gary groaned, pointing at Connor when Hank walked to the standing tables next to the food truck. Hank briefly stopped in his tracks, letting out a slight chuckle.
“Huh, not a chance! Follows me everywhere…” Charlie followed her father to the tables and so did Connor, obviously. Hank opened the burger box and let Charlie take two bites of it before starting to eat the food he had ordered for himself. She didn’t eat fast food much and especially not that kind of high calorie fast food but when she accompanied her father, she would always eat some of his food, just for the sake of the old days, as she used to do this very thing as a child and even as a teenager. Her mom wasn’t very fond of that kind of food, so she didn’t eat many burgers but with her father, it was a different story. He would always let her eat some of his burger as a kid and not tell his ex-wife about it. It was something she kept doing, even after becoming an adult of her own. Connor watched them before speaking up.
“Your meal contains 1.4 times the recommended daily intake of calories and twice the cholesterol level. You shouldn’t eat that.”
“Everybody’s gotta die of something…” Hank shrugged, and Charlie rose her eyebrows, staring down at Connor, swallowing the bite she took of the hamburger they shouldn’t eat, and she leaned over on the table.
“I don’t want to alarm you, Lieutenant, but I think your friends are engaged in illegal activities…” Charlie smirked, widening her eyes, looking shocked.
“Do you now?” She chuckled and glanced down the street. It was nicer now that the rain had came to a stop, but she kept her hood over her head for warmth.
“Everybody does what they have to, to get by… As long as they’re not hurting anybody, I don’t bother ‘em.” Hank then replied. Connor simply nodded before continuing.
“You seem to know everyone in the district.”
“Detroit’s my home. Born and raised. Know most of the guys around here. Went to school with them, or I busted ‘em… sometimes both.” He shrugged lightly before taking another bite of his hamburger. Charlie looked at her father. He sure knew a lot of people in town and even if she was born and raised here as well, she was acquainted to far less people. Maybe because after being bullying and treated as undeserving while being seen as competition by her peers, she never gave much of a thought to starting friendships. She had a few friends during her time at the academy, but they all left the state and went to other places, so she never kept in touch with them, and they didn’t either. Now, all that her life was about was her job, her father and making him proud of her, and being proud of herself too. She really felt like she had no need for friends or a lover. She was genuinely far too busy for these things that would greatly slow down her career. After the disaster that came of her parents’ marriage, she never wanted to go through something like that, so maybe in a way, avoiding bonding with other people would help prevent anything like it to be thrown her way in the future.
“This morning, when we were chasing those deviants…” Connor was leaning on the standing table, staring at Hank. “Why didn’t you want me to cross the highway?”
“Cause you could’ve been killed.” Hank declared and he nodded at himself as he went on to add more to the explanation to the reason why. Charlie frowned imperceptibly, remembering the moment when he had ordered Connor to stand down and stay behind this high grid that separated him from the successful completion of the chase with the deviants. And she thought that his question wasn’t so dumb after all; he was an android and technically he couldn't die. “And I don’t like filling out paperwork for damaged equipment.”
“Is there anything you’d like to know about me?” Connor wondered, changing the subject.
“Hell, no… Well, yeah, um… Why did they make you look so goofy and give you that weird voice?”
“CyberLife androids are designed to work harmoniously with humans. Both my appearance and voice were specifically designed to facilitate my integration.” He explained.
“Well, they fucked up.” Charlie exclaimed, granting a proud look from her father as he was surely thinking the same and about to say it as well. She definitely took the words right out of his mouth. After all, she had learned her sarcasm from no other than the great Lieutenant Anderson, her illustrious father.
“Can I ask you a personal question, Lieutenant?” Hank didn’t say anything and simply nodded. “Why do you hate androids so much?”
“I have my reasons.” He replied in a serious tone, gazing at him. Charlie let out a silent sigh and straightened up, randomly looking down the street. Connor glanced at her as she remained quiet, but she had nothing to add to this. Although he had spoken in the first person, she was very much included in that statement. They both sure did have their reasons why they despised androids so much. After an awkward silence, Connor spoke up again.
“Maybe I should tell you what we know about deviants?”
“You read my mind. Proceed.”
“We believe that a mutation occurs in the software of some androids, which can lead to them emulating a human emotion.”
“In English, please.” He raised his hand, stopping Connor in his explanation. Charlie chuckled quietly because on her side, she was understanding what he was saying. Connor inclined his head, looking down at the table.
“They don’t really feel emotions, they just get overwhelmed by irrational instructions, which can lead to unpredictable behavior.” Hank nodded, taking a sip of his soda.
“Emotions always screw everything up… Maybe androids aren’t as different from us as we thought.” Charlie stared into space out of the corner of his eye, biting the inside of her cheek, thoughtful. He was definitely not wrong. She looked back at Connor and Hank as he continued. “You ever dealt with deviants before?”
“A few months back… a deviant was threatening to jump off the roof with a little girl… I managed to save her.” He declared.
“So, I guess you’ve done all your homework, right?” Hank wondered. “Know everything there is to know about me?”
“I know you graduated top of your class, so did your daughter. You made a name for yourself in several cases and became the youngest lieutenant in Detroit. I also know you’ve received several disciplinary warnings in recent years and… you spend a lot of time in bars.”
“So, what’s your conclusion?”
“I know you’re an experienced officer, and I’d like to earn your trust. Both of you. I’m sure we can solve this case if if we manage to work together.” His brown gaze shifted from Charlie to Hank as he spoke, and he subtly winked at them. The LED on his temple turned yellow and he blinked. “I just got a report of a suspected deviant. It’s a few blocks away. We should go have a look.” He glanced down the street. “I’ll let you finish your meal. I’ll be in the car, if you need me.” Hank and Charlie watched him walk towards the car and exchanged glances out of the corner of their eyes.
Tumblr media
“Hey, Connor!” Hank called out to him, and the android opened his eyes, his LED going back to blue after it went yellow for a little while. He was standing still in the elevator and just looked at Hank and Charlie, standing in front of him in the hallway. “You ran outta batteries or what?”
“I’m sorry. I was making a report to Cyberlife.”
“Huh…” Charlie sighed, replacing behind her ear a blond lock that had escaped from her bun, looking around the filthy corridor and Hank called out to Connor after the android stayed still for a few seconds, in silence. “Well, do you plan on staying in the elevator?”
“No! I’m coming.” He assured and Hank shook his head before walking down the hallway, followed by Charlie who gave a sidelong glance at Connor. The android eventually came along.
“What do we know about this guy?” Hank inquired.
“Not much. Just that a neighbor reported that he heard strange noises coming from this floor. Nobody’s supposed to be living here, but the neighbor said he saw a man hiding a LED under his cap.” Charlie frowned, listening to Connor as he stated the information thay had on this and she watched him crouch down and observe a mucky pile of feathers on the floor.
“Oh Christ, if we have to investigate every time someone hears a strange noise, we’re gonna need more cops.” He crossed his arms over his chest and Connor stood up and went to knock on the apartment’s door. As there was no response, he looked at Hank ad the latter shrugged.
“Anybody home?” He knocked harder on the door. Charlie and Hank frowned upon hearing noises coming from inside. There was some movement. “Open up! Detroit Police!” Suddenly, the loud noise of something fallig over caught their attention.
“Stay behind me.” Hank demanded as he and Charlie pulled out their guns. She kept her weapon aiming down, her hands gripped on the handle.
“Got it.” Connor said, stepping back. Hank kicked in the door, and it slammed opened. He entered the premises with Charlie and Connor behind him. It was suspiciously quiet all of a sudden and Charlie thought that if there was indeed someone in there, it was not just unlikely but rather impossible that they just vanished into thin air. While Connor and Hank inspected a couple of rooms along the entrance hallway, she walked to the main room. The door wasn’t closed all the way, so she glanced through the opening, remaining at safe distance in case someone was behind it and when her father and Connor came, she kicked the door in. She winced and grunted, raising her hand to her face in reflex as dozens of pigeons flew away as they arrived.
“What the fuck is this ?!” Hank swore. Charlie looked around the room. The foul stench that literally assaulted her nostrils led her to keep her hand at her face as she looked around them. The sole window of the room was closed so she walked up to it. “Jesus, this place stinks.”
“Only an android can live with such a smell… and so many fucking pigeons.” She declared as she pulled up the window and took a deep breath in of fresh air, fresh Detroit air anyway.
“Uh, looks like we came for nothin’, our man’s gone…”
“Were the windows closed in the other rooms?” Charlie asked and Hank looked at her curiously.
“Yeah.”
“Well then, unless our man’s a fucking ghost, he must not be very far. You can only leave this place through the door, or the windows.”
“Actually, you’re right.” He nodded and she smirked.
“Of course, I am.” Her gaze then shifted on Connor as he picked something up from a shelf.
“The driver’s licence is fake.” The android stated.
“Cool! At least we didn’t come for nothing…” Hank figured; hands pressed to his waist. Connor then leaned over a jacket lying on a piece of furniture by a doorframe leading to a small bathroom.
“R.T. Probably initials.”
“He put his initials on his jacket? That’s something your mom does when you’re in first grade.”
“I remember mom doing that to all of my clothes. The tags were so itchy though.” Charlie sighed at the memory as she walked around. It was sad that she had lost touch with her mom, but the young woman didn’t like the way her mother dismissed her father’s grief after her little brother’s passing, as if only her pain and sadness was valid. It wasn’t his fault they got into a car accident. Charlie believed that when really love someone, you don’t just throw them under the bus at every inconveniency, you stick by them and get through whathever situation you’re in, together. But her mother didn’t do that, and she was disappointed.
“Its LED is in the sink.” Connor told them.
“Not surprised it was an android. No human could live with all these fuckin’ pigeons…”
“That’s what I said.” Charlie stared at her father, nodding and while he joined Connor in the bathroom and she heard them speak, she walked to a poster hung on the wall and observed every inch of it until she noticed the corners that must have been bent and moved so much that they were worn. She stretched her arm and picked up a top corner, letting the poster hang to the side. There was a large hole in the wall with a tattered diary.
“Found something?” She turned around at her father’s voice rising from behind her and showed the small book as she opened it, only to find strange encryption and drawings.
“Connor, come here.” She called him and the android walked up to her. She handed him the diary and crossed her arms after putting her gun away. He frowned, trying to understand the stuff written inside but he shook his head.
“I don’t know… It’s indecipherable.”
“Great.” She sighed and went to take another look around. “What else did you find in the bathroom?”
“Maze drawings and scriptures all over the wall.” Her father informed and she nodded. She bit her lips, frowning and stared at the birdcage knocked over on the floor. She walked to the doorframe to the bathroom and noticed a wooden stool lying on the floor in the corner of the small room.
"Connor." The android looked at her and she gestured towards the cage and the stool. “You can see what happened here? It wouldn’t sound too crazy to me if that’s what we heard falling earlier.”
“Good intuition.” Hank nodded, pursuing his lips, proud of his daughter’s sharp wits. While the two human police officers then watched their android partner stare at various objects in the apartment staying for a dozen of seconds in front of each of them, Hank swore more than time than one could count about how he hated these pigeons. Connor started by looking at the stool in the bathroom, and after a few minutes of observation, he walked to an armchair in the corner of the living room and looked up. Charlie frowned as she approached and saw a shadow move above their heads. Suddenly, someone jumped down and Charlie and Connor fell backwards, both letting out a grunt as their backs hit the parquet. Hank helped up his daughter.
“What are you waiting for?! Chase it!” He urged Connor, already back on his feet and the android immidietaly started running after the deviant. Hank and Charlie followed him but even a young and fit woman like her, although skinnier than she should be, couldn’t keep up with a machine as such as Connor. They kept up with the machines as best they could, watching the chase between the two androids, quickly out of breath. Charlie outran her father, crossing the fields of the urban farms over the Detroit skyline. They eventually came near the edge of the roof and the deviant budged her, making her fall over the edge. She let out a cry but managed to seize the eave in time, holding her whole body weight with one hand. Teeth clenched, she stretched up her arm to try and lift herself up, but Connor face appeared above her and held his hand out for her to grab. She took his hand and he helped her back on the roof.
“Thank you.” She said, still trying to catch her breath, glancing over the edge, thinking that she could have fallen to her death if it wasn’t for Connor. When she looked to her right, she saw the deviant vanished through the high corn cobs on the building and she realized that for some reason, Connor chose to prioritise her survival over the success of the mission he had been assigned.
“Charlie!” Hank called out her name, panting. He bent forward, leaning on his knees before he straightened up and held her tightly in his arms. She couldn’t take her eyes off Connor as he stepped back, still confused as to why he didn’t go after the deviant if that was what he had been so carefully programmed to do. She had only met him this morning and she already started to see some humanity in him, however small it was. She wondered if he was even a deviant or something. First, he chose to obey Hank when the latter ordered him not to go after that female deviant, and now he chose to save her life instead of completing his dear mission. Hank eventually broke the embrace and looked over at Connor without saying anything until he glanced at where the deviant had disappeared. “We had it.”
“It’s my fault. I should have been faster.” Connor explained himself, following the Lieutenant’s gaze.
“You’d have caught it if it weren’t for me…”
“That’s all right.” Hank breathed out, patting Charlie’s shoulder and gave a grateful look at Connor. “We know what it looks like. We’ll find it.” Hank then led Charlie along with him to leave and get out of the building, but he came to a stop in the doorframe and turned to Connor. “Hey, Connor…” The android looked at him, but Hank shook his head. Charlie knew what he wanted to tell him, he was grateful because he chose to save the life of his dear daughter over his mission but pride as he was, he waved it off and left the premises with Charlie, leaving Connor slightly confused on the roof. If he was a deviant, he surely didn’t know that just yet. He was still very much a programmed android.

For the dbh ask game: 3, 14, 17, 18 💙
I'm apologizing ahead of time because I ramble like hell. LOL Thank you for the ask!
3. Which character do you relate the most to?
Aaaaah, almost really hard to answer. I relate to most of the characters in the game to some degree. Grew up in a broken home like Alice, taken in & cared for people like Kara. I can go on and on but if there's a character I really, really relate to - It's probably Luther, the protector, guardian, however you want to refer to him. He really deserves more lines but I can firmly say I can relate to giving everything in my power to see those around me be safe. I won't type an essay about it because my response is long enough but I can really relate to Luther in many ways.
In a way, I've also really related to Hank lately but I don't want to trauma dump on here or make anyone worried.
14. How do you feel about Kara’s role in the game compared to her role in the Kara short?
Admitly - I'm torn. I actually love both. When I first saw the Kara Short (as a bonus in Beyond: Two Souls), I thought it was AMAZING. I remember my brother and I saying "I wish they'd turn that into a full game". Lmao, and obviously they did. However, I feel in-game Kara is faaaaaaaar different than the Kara in the short. The short is, well, short, and says what it needs to convey and shows Kara moreso as an android that just wants to live life free, whereas in the game, Kara does have those wants, but her main goal is to protect Alice. I love them both and her story in the game is very much packed with the angst I know & love... It's hard to choose which I like more but the Kara short is probably better written (let's face it, it's harder to have plot holes in a 7 minute video rather than a long video game with branching paths).
17. Favorite moments of each playable character?
Oh I have sooo many but I'll try to narrow it down to 2 for each character.
Markus: I love his introduction with Carl. I know the subtext is bad but the moment Markus does his painting, always swells my heart (I think it's partially the amazing soundtrack that gives me emotions). All of the different arts he makes are just...sooo good.
However, I also ADORE crossroads & I love Markus making his way down to blow up the ship while rescuing any androids can. Oh the music, the action, I love it lol.
Kara: There's so many moments I love with Kara. The river endings always have me sobbing my eyes out lol (even if both Alice & Kara make it). I do love the humanity in when you enter the checkpoint and the soldier hands Alice back one of her gloves. I always found it really heartwarming.
Also, Kara talking with Rose. The two just feel like really close friends and Rose cares for Alice on the same level Kara does, I feel. At the final checkpoint at the border, I love Kara finally being able to cry & getting one last hug from Rose before you hopefully make good choices. LOL
Connor: Oh man, hard to choose but I will ALWAYS laugh at Connor breaking into Hank's house via the window...then "Sumo, attack! ...good dog." It gets me every time. Connor convincing Hank to go to the Eden Club in the most sly and manipulative way - I love Russian Roulette as a chapter so much. The depressing subtext is just, *chef kiss*. I love angst & I also love humor.
Then, the chase in the nest. Watching Connor just gun it and run, doing stunts that are impossible for a human being. The music, the action, watching our RK800 dash at probably 15 or 25 mph. Idk, I love it. I'm a sucker for it everytime. I also feel obliged to mention the "I like dogs" & the interrogation sequence. I'm a sucker for interrogation scenes in movies, games, etc. (I also love his little chat sessions with Amanda).
18. Which NPC gave you the most feels?
It's hard to just pick one! Rose gives me mega feels when she brings up how hard it's been since her husband passed. Alice for - obvious reasons. Hank's self destruction, past, addiction, I've seen it irl, I've been it irl. I feel so sorry for him. North - just thinking about her history. It is sooooooooo hard not to feel bad for all the NPCs. I really can't pick one. D:
Thank you for the ask! :D

Things that *got* me in my first DBH playthrough
1. In the hostage chapter, when Connor takes a hold of the family photo and scans it. His face and demeanour. Amazing.
2. Connor getting shot in the arm and looking up with no expression asjhdjiajkd
3. Connor WALKING AWAY EMOTIONLESS from the girl he just saved.
4. When I walked into Carl’s studio for the first time I teared up at the visual. The curtains opening up were so beautiful.
5. When Alice gets struck by Todd. (Actually, this was a negative Got but I’m adding it to the list.)
6. When Markus didn’t rip out the heart of the woman android in the Veta pit and he does a little defeated fist on her chest as he stands.
7. THE AUDIO PROCESSOR AAAAAAAAAAAAAA I almost CRIED when Markus got his hearing back. It was amazing.
8. The hero shot of Markus standing up in the rain and looking down. Absolutely epic. Kinda slutty but also badass
9. When Markus arrives in Jericho and he has to shake the torch active. I had to shake my mouse whilst holding both clicks, but it felt like I was actually shaking the torch.
10. Similarly, when Markus was in battle at the end of the game, I was fighting a bunch of humans and stuff and the controls were all different, but then I had to kill someone and I kept having to hit A. A. A! A! And it really felt like I was smackin the person down. Just the shift from random keys to a repeating key was brutal.
11. I messed up Kara’s escape from Connor so I chased her across the highway. I LOVED IT ALL. Connor sliding across the hood of a car Got me, as well as Kara yanking Alice back and forth. I was screaming across the highway. (I was streaming my playthrough so---) And then Connor hissing, “Shit.”
12. This quote Got me: “Why did they make you look so goofy and give you that weird voice?” (I didn’t like Hank before this point, but when I heard that, I immediately forgave him because what a PISSER of a line) 13. And then this topped it off: “Well, they fucked up.” (CACKLING, GET ROASTED CONNOR)
14. The scene before the main events of Freedom March where Markus is at the outlook. And there’s a piano. I cried so hard. I played the piano at Carl’s when I started and I thought it was a beautiful throwback.
15. Any time I looked in a mirror as any character. Threw me into a crisis.
16. The emotionless, no-grunting, fighting between my Connor and fake Connor Got me.
17. Wading through the blizzard as Connor at the end of the game Got me.
18. I crossed the river as Kara, but when the control boats started shooting, I knew what would happen if I hid. I hid anyway. I knew it. I think I just knew the trope or storytelling pattern or something, but it was the choice that Got me, not the aftermath.
19. Markus climbing Stratford tower Got me, especially with RISE displayed on the major screen paired with the epic music. UGH yes
20. When Connor fought the red haired Traci and her high heel clacks on the ground when she swing over him. It’s the camera angle and sound. Another trope I think, but I was VIBING hard
21. Connor fighting the two Tracis at once. That was so intense for me. I was like oh SHIT he’s FIGHTING TWO ANDROIDS. He’s one android. I’m thinking at the time damn boy if you were all deskinned you would all be pretty much the same and he’s fighting TWO. And they SLAM him into the wall??? I was Got
22. Also when Connor is fighting red haired Traci and she marches towards him. Camera angle & facial expression. Amazing
23. Connor running for the first time when I’m chasing Kara>>>
24. Markus in the WM400 uniform HOH
25. “You look lost” and then reveal the WR600 HOH sorry but I was stunned---he is My Type of Appearance and his disposition/behaviour---okok, my crush. (Because I was streaming this I also have my voice captured in real-time being weak HAHAHAHA)
26. “Holy shit,” says Hank as AN AMAZING SOUNDTRACK IS PLAYING AND CONNOR IS ON THE TRAIN TOP CHASING AFTER THE DEVIANT AND SNAPS HIS ATTENTION UP---
27. Literally the whole chase in The Nest tbh
28. The Hank and Connor hug at the end
29. The android who was tied to the back of a car because his humans “just wanted to have some fun” Got me
30. The music in The Interrogation
31. Also Connor creeping around in the attic Got me, but only when he ducked a certain way
32. TWENTY-EIGHT STAB WOUNDS
34. The “CONNOR! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?” interaction
35. Slapping Hank awake
36. Hank immediately sobering up in the bathtub and being like “What the fuck are you doing here?”
37. Connor teasing Hank about the Eden Club case also Got me
38. When Kara checks the dryer for clothes in the laundromat.
39. “Will we be together forever?” - “Forever.” Not even another option. Got. (I stayed in the car overnight.) And I quote myself from my recording: “...Well, I’ll be together with Alice for as long as she lives. I’m not sticking around a grave when she’s ninety somethin’ years old.”
40. “We’ll be together forever, won’t we Kara?” - Alice in Jericho after I found out she’s an android. MEGA Got, because of my mindset above ^. And I was like oh man yeah forever ;__;;
41. Chloe asking to leave. And I let her.
42. Chloe asking me not to continue, to just leave things as they are for the sake of peace. I accepted, but then I continued after waiting a little bit.
43. The first time I was parkouring with Markus was really noice.
44. In The Nest when Hank is at that stand-up table and the burger guy is like “Don’t leave that thing here” and Hank’s like “Don’t worry it follows me everywhere” and Connor has to walk over to him and on the way there and Hank says “See?” That REALLY Got me.
45. Also in The Nest, when Connor says something along the lines of “Maybe we should go take a look...” and his eyes drift to the side, then snap back onto Hank.
46. In Zlatko’s house when I’m regaining my memory after failing to escape the machine, the corrupted memory I thought was just random letters but after about 4 pieces of info they started to look like words, and that Got me.
47. This wasn’t a Got moment but in ‘Russian Roulette’ I didn’t see the gun until it was my last clue to scan and I was Shook.
47. When I got to choose Hank’s clothes.
48. When I stroke down with my mouse so Markus can take out the circle of glass he cut out from the window in Stratford Tower.
49. The moment before we smash into the CyberLife store, Markus is sitting in the truck and I have to press W. That camera angle switch from W to YEEEEE is amazing.
50. When we approach the crowd as Markus and the crowd splits revealing the kneeling cops. The dead bodies on the way there Got me.
51. “CyberLife’s last chance to save humanity... is itself a deviant.” “I’m... I’m not a deviant.” HOHHHHHHHHHHH
52. The option unlocking for Connor to become deviant.
53. Then Connor starting to tear down his walls. & the soundtrack paired with this moment.
54. Then [ I AM DEVIANT ]
Bonus: I distinctly remember very clearly thinking “oh great another sci-fi game with an average-looking white guy as the protagonist” and I have never been so wrong. The switch of opinion happened so fast. From the elevator to picking up the photo frame was like OOP---

There is smut. And then post-smut fluff. Very fluffy bois. Never without their fair share of insecurities of course :)
This explicit fic features Omega Markus, mostly-Beta-but-Alpha-when-needed Connor, North looking out for her stupid idiot omega friend, too many feelings, and RK1K!

Chapter 8: The Nest
They arrive at the abandoned floor for the latest deviant case.
Warnings: dehumanizing language, violence, (pigeon) excrements
Excerpt:
“Building pretty old. Graffitis on the wall. No evidence of deviant presenc-”
Hank turned towards him, already out of the elevator. “Connor, you’re coming or what? You’ve been fidgeting on your watch ever since we entered the building.”
Finger still on the device - that started proposing the special 'e' characters - the deviant hunter blinked up. “I’m sorry, I was making a report to CyberLife. I’m coming, Lieuten- Hank.”
The wall was pretty dirty, and Connor could see some scarce feathers, as well as some old newspapers that dated a few years back. A few of those, if not all, were soiled by bird excrements. It truly was different from CyberLife’s rooms and hallways. Connor had expected it, considering the case's description, but he couldn’t help but be surprised still.
The Outside was very different from place to place. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to it.

favourite chapter for the dbh 3, go! (good luck with kara's they're all the same)
SCREAM thank u for my dbh rights, raven!!
markus: from the dead (chapter 11) is probably one of the most visually and auditory-ly stunning part of the game. there’s something so raw to see a man that has lost everything, thrown down in a literal wasteland, and finds the motivation to keep moving forward. we see the point for markus where he realizes that shit, this isn’t fair, this isn’t right....and i must fight for my survival from now on. also him having to rip these parts from other androids? androids that are still alive? bro...BRO. another fave for me is AS CRINGE AS IT IS but chapter 23: the stratford tower. i only like it because of the whole set up and how the jericrew work together for a common goal. we really see markus’ leadership skills plus we see him in that mf FIT y’all already KNOW the one!! 🤤 it’s also tense and is a culmination of what they’ve worked hard for...this is IT right before they go to war. everybody is on their mf game, whether you go the non-violent route or nah, it’s still a rush
kara: asjdksal you are RIGHT so much of kara’s story line is recycled and it’s the same old shit. the pirates’ cove (chapter 21) is a sweet chapter in my opinion. we get a little bit of “rest” after everything with zlatko and right before they meet rose so to have a change of pace was nice and definitely much needed. we get a sweet moment between mother and daughter and we get to know luther a little bit more. though there is a bit of danger in there, it’s all a misunderstanding since the jerry’s are only there to bring light and life again. now i ain’t gonna lie to y’all, while first watching dbh, that ending with the carousel got me so bad so i started crying like a fucking BITCH scream that was jskdjskal. also another chapter that was interesting was chapter 7: stormy night. this is the night kara turns deviant and she literally fights for what she knows is right. it’s also a scary chapter with some of that good ole d*vid c*ge assault against women though miss. kara is a bad bitch who fights her way tooth and fucking nail!
connor: 😳 gosh...like, for him, there’s a bunch of moments that i like but it’s not like the chapter as a whole was good? does that make sense? hmm, thinking...the nest (chapter 15) had a great balance between intense action and great dialogue. we get to see more and more of who connor can become if you allow him to, and it can be quite a turning point for him. what means more to him? the mission or the well-being of the people he cares about? also the pigeons in that mf apartment is ridiculous like they be clipping through the mf ceiling da fack. chapter 29: last chance, connor...i don’t need no explanation since he kicked gavin reed’s ASS like goodnight white pride! also the conversation beforehand with hank is something that is fundamental in understanding his own deviancy. either way, if you choose to stay a machine, it’s intense and hank casts doubts, saying that androids aren’t the real enemy. if going the deviant route, it’s fun because you get the whole evidence room scene and “perkins, you fucking cocksucker!” scream
honorable mentions: now i was trying to get chapters where it happens in the main game no matter what route you are going but...come ON is it even a mf list without connor at the cyberlife tower (chapter 32) like that shit....HE BODIED that shit. connor’s true potential was out on display here, we were able to see him kick some ass, saw him kick his own ass, and whichever ending you get, that shit goes HARD. that chapter was hella sexy
another solid chapter is the end of it all: chapter 32: markus’ demonstration/revolution. whichever path you take, markus continues to be one hell of a leader, a motivator, and a friend...he cares so deeply about his people and is willing to do ANYTHING to keep them safe and to be free. he fights, fights so damn hard to be heard and seen and markus doesn’t stop until he knows the message has come across. plus, any scene with markus fighting and with a gun got me like 🤤😳👉🏽👈🏽 am looking respectively!!

All Dbh Chapters
@kaydel your reply to my ask has inspired me to give my thoughts on each of the chapters.
Chapter 1: The Hostage
Is honestly a good first chapter, the tension and stakes are high, it pulls you in. There's a reason people who played the demo were hyped for the game. And regardless of what I think of Cage's writing, it's not the first time he's done a solid intro to a game. (Swiftly followed by garbage but I digress..)
We learn something about deviancy and how it starts, we get a sequence of dialogue based gameplay to set up how important it is to the story, and we get a taste of Connor’s somewhat underdeveloped investigation gameplay.
I will admit that there are several lines I kind of like in this scene (’You can’t kill me, I’m not alive’ I’d like this even better if Bryan didn’t love it so much) And most of the outcomes are very cool!
Chapter 2: Opening
Is not a chapter, it's the opening credits. It's not really interesting, but it's not as bad as Heavy Rain's, only because it's about half as long. Kara was robbed.
Chapter 3: Shades of Color
What a title am I right! And no, it's not just because of the paints. This chapter, title aside, isn't bad! We don't learn anything about Markus but it sets the world up nicely. It's one of the cooler open areas. It shows off the graphics nicely.
And all of that is promptly ruined by the overly heavy-handed scene with the protesters. With the follow up of the back of the bus! Also the preacher guy is weird what was the point of that.
Chapter 4: A New Home
Easily one of the most (if not The Most) boring chapters in the game. Mundane QTEs? We all looooooove those! At the end of the chapter you get some exposition to a very nice composition (this game really would be nothing without the music) and that part is actually ok. But the mundane housework gameplay doesn’t get a pass, even if it is to give context for what the life of an android is like. Would be 100% better if there was 40% less housework.
Chapter 5: The Painter
A solid chapter! Learning about Markus through his interactions with Carl? An actual good narrative device? Unbelievable. At surface level their relationship is sweet and Carl is so supportive of Markus growing beyond his programming. Though there is a darker undertone that mirrors the caged android birds. And that it’s all a gilded cage. And I like both of those interpretations, they’re interesting.
The music mini game is interesting the first time you do it but after that I’m never picking it again, chess it is from now on.
Chapter 6: Partners
Connor’s return after 5 chapters. I think that might be the longest break between appearances for any of them. Anyway this chapter is mostly fine. It sets up Hank and Connor’s troubled partnership and shows us what most of Connor’s gameplay is going to be. (Detective work and trying to reason with Hank) It would be interesting if there was an option to let Ortiz’ android go, seeing as there if a version of the scene where you don’t find him. But I guess it’s too early for Connor to be disobeying.
Chapter 7: Stormy Night
Classic David Cage has women being abused by men! Unfortunately this is one of Kara’s best chapters. The tension from the very first moment if real, and as soon as Alice runs up stairs, you just know what’s going to happen. Without fail, every person I’ve ever watched, immediately tries to follow her. Honestly? Solid way to make me care about the kid.
I know some folks have problems with showing child abuse on screen, but my opinion is that they kept the worst of it as implied, like in the failed ending of the chapter, you don’t see it actually happen. So I’m personally okay with it, but I can understand why some may disagree.
10/10 for the chase/escape scene. It’s stressful as hell but honestly the music just makes it...like idk the moment Kara deviates? I nearly, literally screamed the first time. The build up to it is so good, and you as the player are determined to protect Alice and will fight through the programming to do it.
Chapter 8: Broken
Gonna be honest, Markus’ deviating scene falls a little flatter for me. I’ve watched several people play for the first time and actively not want to break programming and retaliate. Which makes the fact that its a scripted event you can’t avoid frustrating to them. I guess we just haven’t seen any anger from him yet so it doesn’t feel like the reaction you expect? (I get that it’s supposed to be him finally cracking, the story just...doesn’t convey that very well.)
Also the fact that you get punished for staying silent with Carl dying is shitty.
Chapter 9: The Interrogation
Talk about fucking tense! This scene is a real challenge, in either difficulty. Unless you don’t care about the android self-destructing?
I don’t have much else to say, it’s not a bad scene but there’s not a lot of substance to it. The ‘the day will come when we will no longer be slaves’ line is...the start of the truly terrible writing choices in this game.
Chapter 10: Fugitives
Not a bad scene. Getting to choose to steal a bunch of stuff is fun, and the fact that you can steal all this shit and then go and sleep in the car is pretty funny. I don’t like the house or Ralph, just because it’s another chance to put a female character at risk from a male character. 7/10 I’m never picking the house. (Also did you know you can fail to steal from that guy in the laundromat and he wakes up lmao)
Chapter 11: From The Dead
Ok this is going to be kind of a controversial opinion...but I’m tired of this scene. While it’s true that no scene in the game holds up on the 20th watch/play, this scene lost most of it’s shock value on the 3rd watch. Now that being said, the sound design in the scene is brilliant. And putting the audio processor back in does still give me chills, but the rest of the scene? I mean, I guess cannibalising other androids is a pretty powerful story action. But the fact that you can take all of the things you need from dead androids if you search hard enough kind of ruins that for me.
Also idk why but everyone collectively thinks that Markus screams when he reaches the top of the slope and I have no idea why.
Chapter 12: Waiting For Hank
Boooooooring. Ok, getting beat up by Gavin after refusing to make him coffee is mildly interesting. But the fact that Hank just hates you in the scene is honestly quite tiring. Like, his opinion of Connor will inevitably go down at least once, you can’t avoid that. Also there’s nothing to explore in the office so...
Chapter 13: On The Run
Both versions of this scene are very tense. And not in...a super fun way. Like ok, Kara has that empowering woman moment where she cuts her hair, great, but the rest of the scene isn’t that good. (And the version with Ralph is downright disturbing.)
Chapter 14: Jericho
Oh god let’s players cannot do this part. And the amount of time I’ve spent watching people run around clueless because they weren’t paying even the slightest attention or follow the obvious path, makes me hate this chapter. I also hate it because the gameplay isn’t very interesting. Markus’ precog is mildly interesting, but that’s really it. (The end of this chapter has some pretty stunning visuals tho)
Chapter 15: The Nest
Ok, the opening conversation with Hank is cute if Connor is trying to be nice. Though the actual chase is pretty tense. The music is on point as always, because the composers for this game were very overqualified for the job. Also the fact that you get punished for not saving Hank both amuses and vexes me. You don’t catch the guy because you were a shitty partner. But what was the point of taking the risk with Hank if there’s no reward? (Yes I know he still ends up in evidence lock up but that’s hardly reward enough for risking your partner’s life)
I mean okay the pigeons flying through the roof is pretty funny, but the investigation in the apartment isn’t all that interesting. Also I’ve just realised I haven’t mentioned the Zen Garden once but honestly most of the scenes there aren’t that interesting anyway.
Chapter 16: Time To Decide
Wow where do I start on how uninteresting this chapter is. You learn very little about Markus’ companions, you get to have a conversation with a magical minority, and you get a line about an android being dragged behind the back of a car. (After reading the wiki about James Byrd I feel genuinely sick and could not be more disgusted that this was used so clumsily in the game.)
Chapter 17: Zlatko
His name sounds like a brand. Also this is my least favourite Kara chapter. They go to his place for almost no reason (just so they can get caught) and we get a 20 minute scene of Zlatko being a cartoonish monster of a man. Also this has been pointed out and now I can’t stop thinking about it. Why is Kara scared of Luther when she sees him? Like...??? Anyway re-finding her memories is boring, finding Alice is also boring, and hiding from Zlatko is just stressful. Nothing interesting to the story happens here, except that Luther joins Kara and Alice.
Chapter 18: Russian Roulette
Perhaps the shortest chapter in the game. It’s not like...super boring, but it’s not interesting either. Also don’t forget to notice the picture on the table or you’ll have no chance of getting the good ending later! Seriously, they should have made it a requirement for the scene to move on if it’s going to be that important.
Chapter 19: Spare Parts
The whole freerunning thing at the start is lame. And the fact that you have to grab the android and then release him to get the best outcome is confusing as hell. (I have seen many folks fuck this up.) The part where you sneak around in the guard house is actually kind of cool. Also North go down if you’re nice to people....I love this game.
Chapter 20: The Eden Club
Pity the lesbian sexworker androids!!! In all seriousness though this is a chapter I do not like. The endings are unfulfilling, the whole storyline is gross, poorly written and very Cage-esque. (Also why would you make the two android lovers the same model?! Just make one of them one of the other 8 female WR800 models you have!) I mean I guess I can say that the glowly design of the sexclub is nice or whatever.
Chapter 21: Pirate’s Cove
Ok this is a personal one but I don’t like this chapter. Something about the family dynamic between the three falls flat for me and so the whole scene being about them makes it...ehh. Also Kara under threat again! Woohoo! The scene on the carousel is kind of cute and the scene composition is nice, but the fact that all the Jerrys are standing around watching is a little weird. Also bait us with rA9 crap why don’t you! we’ll just never learn anything about this i guess
Chapter 22: The Bridge
I like this chapter to be honest. I know Pirate’s Cove is meant to be relaxed but I find this chapter more relaxing. Even if it ends with a gun to Connor’s head. I mean it’s not that hard to not get shot really. And seeing Hank start to care and question their mission is interesting. I don’t know, I guess I just like the visuals of the snow and the bridge. (Anyone notices that it goes from raining to snowing like three days later, wtf)
Chapter 23: The Stratford Tower
Now this one is complicated. Because I like the breaking in and getting up to the broadcast department part, I even like the pre-speech tension. Markus carrying the weight of history and knowing his words will shape what people across the world think of androids.
The music as he gets ready to start the speech is....just so good. But then he starts talking and.....mmmmm press x for civil right yes please! Press square to end slavery? Absolutely! God...the writing in this scene is Bad. Which is a shame! Because it squanders the carefully crafted tension built up until this point. I like the energy going into this scene, the idea that they’re about to take a stand, make history. But it is unfortunately ruined for the sake of a poorly executed racism allegory.
Chapter 24: Public Enemy
Ok, going to investigate the crime scene of what you just did as Markus is pretty good. Its not an original idea, that was the opening sequence for Indigo Prophecy, but it still works I’m not going to lie. Also the cop from the Hostage showing up to thank you if you saved him is cute. The fact that Hank is starting to question Connor and look for signs of deviancy in him is also nice! Also I hate it but going after Simon gives you a more cohesive storyline if you’re going for a deviant Connor route. (Can I get an F for Simon? He can die so many different ways)
Chapter 25: Midnight Train
Can’t believe that the chapter about the underground railroad is literally called Midnight Train. Yeah the dialogue in this? Shocking, terrible, absolutely unforgivable. Rose I am so sorry this happened to you. Also a cop arrives to....put Kara in peril at the hands of a male character again! Can’t go a chapter without that!
Chapter 26: Capitol Park
Hmmmmmmmmm. ‘We have a dream’? ‘I can’t breathe, but I’m still alive’? Hi, yes, hello? David Cage is doing it again, yeah he’s co-opting black history for his story about androids, somebody needs to stop him. Why did no one stop him.
Ok, most of this chapter other than that is ok. It’s not particularly good, but it’s ok. (wiLL yOu bE gOoD oR eViL?!?!1)
Chapter 27: Meet Kamski
Ok this man is so creepy and emotionally manipulative and as a narrative tool I’ve actually come to love it. Like the tone of this chapter is such a breath of fresh air. Maybe it’s just the fact that they added a new character after such a long time and that he knows more than he ever lets on. rA9 baited again...
Also this is Connor’s turning point in a way. You can still choose to change your path later on, but this is the real moment of truth where a character pushes him to reveal where he’s at. (Also the fucking MUSIC)
Chapter 28: Freedom March
Oh no. I’m so sorry Markus you deserve better. I hate this chapter if you can’t tell. The combo of the black history slogans and the jesus music is too much for me. Also the good ending is locked behind Simon being alive/Spare Parts success route??? Also F for that random android who’s name is John that we hear about twice.
Chapter 29: Last Chance, Connor
I usually keep a low profile with Gavin so I miss out on the beatdown unfortunately. But having the option is hilarious. If you don’t sacrifice at the march, Simon is alive, interrogation bad end, Rupert and the Tracis escape....can you even find Jericho?
Just a thought, anyway this is short but tense chapter. Don’t hate it.
Chapter 30: Crossroads
Kara’s part of this is dumb as hell. The Alice twist literally destroys the storyline but anyway...
Markus has very little to do until the end. His version is ok, but Jesse’s line delivery leaves something to be desired. (You’re one of us....)
Connor’s is easily the most interesting of the three concurrent stories at this point. Going in to capture Markus/North, chasing them through the hold if ur a machine..very good.
And....going deviant. Okay yes that still gets me, I did actually shout YES!! out loud the first time I witnessed it. The music’s slow build in the scene, and most of the dialogue (if you choose carefully) swells to this point and...and..it happens!!
Like idk I’ve only been slowly building up to this for 9 hours, sue me.
Chapter 31: Night Of The Soul
I like this chapter! Or Markus’ version anyway. Connor’s...well the Hank version is just sad. The Jericho version is fine.
But Markus? Visiting Carl’s grave or the man himself is such an emotional moment for the character. And the single humanising moment he’s had in several chapters. The conversation is so weighted with his doubts and fears and Jesse Williams gives a beautiful performance! (Also as I’ve said, the alarm system saying ‘welcome home markus’ kills me on impact)
Chapter 32: Battle For Detroit
Is a good chapter. What, did you expect me to say it isn’t? Cause it is. Or some versions of it are.
The tension in all three characters stories, regardless of which version, is perfectly hit at this point.
Kara’s....ah fuck idk I mean the border version is ok? The others....kind of suck? The guy letting them through with high public opinion and Markus doing a peaceful demonstration is kind of cute and sort of makes sense in a way.
Markus’ versions (both in which he is alive) are pretty cool. The revolution is hard, and I do like that it ends with him saying that they haven’t won, they’ve only started a war. The demonstration is kind of dumb, and I actually prefer them getting shot and then the news anchors suggesting that maybe androids are people in their own right that humans refused to acknowledge. (Feels more real, ya know?) Also black folk song!! Why??
Gonna be real, most of Connor’s versions of this scene are pretty good. Cyberlife tower is tense as hell but he’s a fucking badass. Machine Connor on the roof gives us the best line in the game. ‘What’s up lieutenant, ran out of whiskey so you came here looking for trouble?’
So that’s some of my thoughts on each of the chapters of dbh, I could go into more depth but my eyes hurt and I’ll probably hit post limit soon.

replaying DBH and I noticed that Hank actually hugs Pedro at the front of the food truck during the nest chapter, and can I just say that I appreciate that so much? Like I really appreciate the hug with connor at the end, but I also like that you get to see something like this sooner.
like here’s this male character who definitely falls into the “bitter cop” trope, but still has a soft side and had no problem hugging friends? Like Hank is such a great character.

I'm watching a someone play DBH and they're at "The Nest" chapter
I think it's cute that Rupert put his initials on his jacket. He probably didn't have a name when he worked at the Urban Farm. I think he was putting it on there to solidify his identity and the fact that he is his own person and not part of one unit :)

Deviating Love Affair - Part 2
Tumblr media
PART 1
Soulmate AU with DBH Connor
Pair: Connor x Female! Reader
Prompt: In this universe, you are supposed to receive a tattoo of your soulmate’s name on your 18th birthday.  However, you being the lucky winner, never received one on that special day.  After years go by, you began to accept the fact that maybe you were never destined to have a soulmate until one day, on August 5th, 2038, you see a certain individual’s name gets written on your wrist.  Not only is it odd that your soulmate tattoo wasn’t given to you on your 18th birthday but that in reality, your soulmate isn’t even human.
Word Count: 1749 words
A/N: Hi friends! I’m back with another part!  Just an FYI, I skipped through “The Nest” chapter since I didn’t think it really fit with how I wanted the characters to develop so we are just going to pretend that never happened.  I’ve also skipped through some other chapters from the game that I thought were too boring and I really don’t want to bore you guys.  This part and the next one are going to be kind of slow but I swear it will pick up a little....hopefully...I don’t know.
Feedback is always appreciated and I know this part sucked so nitpick all you want! (I need it because writing is really not my strong suit).

Connor was facing a dilemma.  He knew what his purpose was, how he was supposed to hunt deviants and search for their source of deviancy.  He also knew that he was a machine, a machine who was not supposed to feel emotions or disobey his master.  However, the moment he met you, everything seemed to change within him.  He no longer truly knew what he was or how he was supposed to act.  For the first time ever, he did not know what to do.
Connor opened his eyes and was met with the sight of the peaceful Zen Garden.  The words, “Talk to Amanda” appeared at the corner of his eye.  Connor looked around the area before landing on Amanda’s figure standing on the center island by a wall of roses.  He slowly made the walk to her while trying to formulate proper sentences which would not upset her nor make him lose her trust.
Once Connor had reached a comfortable speaking distance from her, he introduced himself, “Hello Amanda.”
Amanda looked over her shoulder before replying, “Connor, it’s good to see you.”
Amanda smiled at him before snipping off a flower in front of her.  She proceeded to congratulate Connor on successfully locating the deviant as well as properly extracting a confession.  She also praised Connor for his achievements while also asking a series of questions of what he has discovered along the way.
Amanda paused for a moment as she sprayed her flowers with water.  Connor had hoped that their conversation would be over so he wouldn’t have to face any more of her questioning, especially ones involving you.
“Both Lieutenant Anderson and Officer (Y/L/N) have been assigned to the deviancy cases.  What do you make of them?”
Connor paused for a moment, carefully thinking of what to say.  “Lieutenant Anderson seems a bit dysfunctional.  He clearly has some personal issues which impact his professional behavior.  He also seems to want to have nothing to do with this investigation or Androids overall.”
“Unfortunately, we have no other choice but to work with him,” she replied, “What about the other?”
Connor paused once more, but this time, he was taking more time to properly say what he wanted to say without upsetting Amanda.  But what could he say?  He couldn’t tell her that he hasn’t stopped thinking about you since last night or that the image of your smile was engraved in his mind.  After careful thought, Connor spoke again, “She seems to be very invested in her work, unlike her coworker.  However, she also seems to be troubled by something, more troubled the moment I introduced myself to her.  Overall, she’s a very intriguing character and I wish to learn more about her.”
Amanda stopped what she was doing and slowly turned around to face Connor.  “More and more androids are showing signs of deviancy.  If they are not stopped, destruction and chaos will occur.  You are the only one who can stop this outcome.  There are no room for...distractions,” she ended, clearly referencing Connor’s description of you.
Connor nodded as he watched Amanda walk away.

You anxiously tapped your fingers on your thigh as you sat on your couch.  You kept glancing over at your phone which sat face down on the coffee table, taunting you with its presence. You were eager to call Hank and talk to him about the events of last night and what it had felt like to meet Connor; however, you were worried about how he would react which kept you from making the call.
After a few more minutes of you contemplating whether or not to bother your easily-annoyed coworker, you picked up the phone and pressed the dial button on his profile.
“Hello?” Hank asked.
“Do you think, and I’m asking out of full curiosity, it’s possible for someone’s soulmate to be an android?” you asked without warning.
“What?” Hank asked.
“Do you think it’s possible for someone’s soulmate to be an android?”
“Hell no, Androids aren’t alive; they aren’t meant to have soulmates.  Wait, why are you even asking this?” he asked, clearly uncomfortable with your question.
“Think about it Hank, my tattoo says Connor, my soulmate tattoo says Connor.  The next Connor I meet just happens to be an Android detective working with us, this has to mean something.”
“Oh hell no, you don’t actually think that that plastic cop is your soulmate do you?”
“Just hear me out Hank,” you replied.
“Look kiddo, I don’t have time for this,” he said as he threatened to end the call.
“Hank!” you exclaimed, stopping him from doing so, “just listen.”
You heard Hank sigh through the phone before he replied, “Continue.”
“Last night, when I met Connor, it wasn’t like I was just meeting another Android, it was like I was meeting another human being.  And, I don’t know, I just can’t stop thinking about him, how he acts, how he talks.  It’s like I’m a teenager all over again experiencing a first crush or something and it’s driving me insane.  Last night was the first time I’ve felt like that with anyone in a very long time and I can’t just ignore it,” you said.
Hank stayed silent for a couple of seconds as he processed everything that you had just said.  “Please say something,” you begged, worried of what Hank might think.
“I don’t buy it,” he said.
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t think the universe made you wait this long for a fucking Android.  You deserve better than that,” he replied.
Before you could object, Hank had already ended your call, clearly thinking that you were delusional.  You leaned your head back against your seat while running your fingers through your hair in frustration.  Maybe you were crazy and maybe you were in over your head; however, nothing else could explain these rush of feelings from the night before.
The next time you ran into Connor was later that night when you heard someone knock on the front door to your apartment.  You carefully put down your cup of tea before getting up from your seat to answer the door.  You truly did not expect to see Connor standing at your door.
“Hi Connor,” you said with a bit of surprise, “What’s up?”
Connor looked at you up and down for a split second, noticing how you had on black rimmed glasses for a -1.00 prescription and you were wearing comfortable loungewear.
“Hello Officer, sorry to bother you so late.  I have just received word of another deviancy case just downtown and wanted to inform you.  I also thought it would be better if you were with me before I talked to Lieutenant Anderson.”
You smiled and nodded before replying, “Come in, just give me five minutes.”
You took a few steps back, opening the door wider, allowing Connor to walk in.  Connor looked around your home thinking to himself that it was very cozy and comfortable for one person (maybe even two).
“I’ll be right back, but make yourself at home,” you said before retreating to your bedroom to get dressed.
Connor took this opportunity to learn more about you, in hopes to better his relationship with you.  The first thing that caught his eye was the lonesome white mug on your island which was still steaming.  Connor took a second to analyze the contents of the cup.  He noticed that you had brewed a cup of tea, assuming it was your favorite, with exactly 15 grams of sugar.
Connor exited your kitchen and came across a photo album which sat in the middle of your coffee table.  He picked up the book and noticed a photo of you and Hank with the words, “Happy Birthday” engraved on its cover.
Connor opened the book and flipped through the photos of you and your presumed close friends at the DPD and various locations in Detroit, all of which had you in mid laughter or with a huge smile on your face.  Connor found your smile so charming and genuine.  He lightly traced the outline of your face with his fingertips, the edges of his mouth turning slightly upwards.  He was so captivated by your photo that he failed to notice you had already left your room and was standing next to him.
“What are you looking at?” you asked as you tried to tame the stray hairs on your head and pull them in a proper ponytail.
“I was-I was just looking at your photo album,” Connor said, somewhat startled by your presence.
You laughed slightly before placing your hand on his shoulder, “Sorry for scaring you.”
Connor quickly glanced at your hand, the warmth of your fingers seemed to burn through his skin.
“Do you want to see something funny?” you asked, snapping Connor out of his thoughts.
Connor nodded slightly before handing the photo album to you.  You quickly flipped to a certain page of the album and pointed at a picture of you and Hank.  Connor studied the picture for a bit, trying to understand the situation.
“Is that Lieutenant Anderson,” he paused, “in a crab costume?”
You laughed inwardly before replying, “Yes, yes it is.  This picture was taken on Halloween and we made a bet the night before.  Basically, if the Detroit Gears beat the Boston Celtics, I would have to wear a ridiculous costume of his choice; however, if the Celtics won, Hank would have to wear a crab costume.  Guess who won,” you said in between laughs.
Although Connor did find Hank’s appearance to be very entertaining, he was completely drawn to your laugh.  The pictures he had seen in your booklet did not truly capture the beauty of your smile.  The way your eyes crinkled up, how your eyes literally lit up, and how the sound of your laugh was very pleasant to listen to, almost like a melody.  Your laughter made Connor begin to smile and for the first time, he had experienced genuine happiness.

“Anyways,” you said before your eyes met with Connor’s.
You both froze for a brief second getting lost in each other's eyes.  After a few seconds, you shook your head slightly and cleared your throat, breaking the silence between the two of you.  You closed the photo album in your hand and placed it back in its original position.
“Ready to go?” you asked Connor.
Connor nodded before following you out of your apartment and into the cold night air of Detroit.
