All these people in the fandom who convinced themselves that Dickson never cared about Shulk (and some of the group tbh, specially Dunban) are just willingly missing out on some delicious internal conflict for all the characters involved, as well as ignoring things we outright see and are told in the actual game. This also goes to people who act like Shulk hates him after the fact.

They cared about each other, maybe never stopped caring to some degree, and that makes it all the more painful.

It’s fathers day and thus I'm thinking about one of the most confusing xenoblade “dads” and its in quotes because im not even sure if he is a dad.

Like, the wiki says Dickson took in shulk, the entire fandom seems to agree on that, but then you play the game and while its an entirely reasonable assumption to make if you read into things, nowhere is it ever said or even really implied he did that? like every time they talk he never acts like this is a kid who lives with him. he just kinda has general cool uncle vibes, but like when reflecting on important people in his life shulk almost never seems to give that much lip to the guy who allegedly raised him, or take his betrayal as painfully as like. Dunban did lol.

It’s left me scratching my head for years as to whether there’s some outside source that confirms it or if we all just tricked ourselves into thinking they had an explicit father-son relationship that was totally communicated to us in game.

 like I never realized that the first time I was playing, and I watched a letsplayer who was also told that in his comments section and was like “oh, ok. I didnt realize that I wish they’d actually made that clear” like. either the writing completely failed to get its point across or we’ve all collectively hallucinated all that. 

#im genuinely curious tho if there's some outside confirmation of Dickson raising shulkor if theres like a singular line that mentions it #ngl hes by far one of the characters they dropped the ball on the most in xenoblade ever. like damn they gave Kevin a last minute redemption #but not this guy? any potential regret or conflict barely gone into? giant lore being incredibly barebones that all we know is that #'they existed at one point' and schrodingers father not being clarified is the cherry ontop. guy had all the makings of a interesting #character but then failed to execute so ig its up to fans now. for fathers day the greatest gift will be giving this man good writing!!! #xenoblade #xenoblade chronicles #dickson

I kinda like how the Xenoblade games have been splitting up the Uzuki-types. Xenogears had Citan Uzuki. Xenosaga had Jin Uzuki. Then it gets interesting.

In Xenoblade 1, Dunban gets the Uzuki design, of course. But Dickson gets a bit more of the Uzuki personality, and has a similar plot twist to Citan.

Xenoblade X very obviously has Lao, in terms of design and character. But Nagi carries over more of the Dunban-esque attacks.

Xenoblade 2 gives Mòrag the design and certain aspects of the character. And then it drops Jin on us, who not only shares a name with Jin Uzuki, but also literally has a Citan deathblow.

And now Xenoblade 3 gives us Ashera. She takes a lot of the Dunban-esque elements way past the extreme, and she gets all the Dunban-esquw arts. She also kinda has a Citan-esque twist except way less extreme, in that she knew more than she let on, but it doesn't have plot relevance. And the other Uzuki-type in Xenoblade 3, I'd argue, is Zeon, who has the whole "mentor to the main protagonist" thing going on, and even has the same Citan deathblow as Jin.
