Time for new enrichment: a dig box!

Got this covered round kitty litter box (hoping the lack of corners confuses Nima enough not to piss in there)

I added the bumblebee fleece bc the ramp looked slippery on non- paw padded feet (plus I wanted it to look cute)

Filled it with shredded paper (used a different bedding than what I use for litter so they don't think it's litter box number two.) And tossed in freeze dried strawberries, some pellets, and put hay in there too!

Assembled that thang (I can't wait for digging without the mess)

And now let the creatures investigate it!

So we've been slowly going through stuff to sort out trash, what keep, or what to get rid of boxes from my family's last house (all this has been in a storage unit) and I found a peculiar box in today's boxes I was shifting through

Went through the whole thing (and yes it's all the same Pokémon movie toys sold from Burger King) and picked out all the non matching ones just to see how many there were together.

Also compared dupes and picked out the best looking version to keep personally. Soma, then why are you keeping two charmanders and elekids if you don't want dupes?? Well you see, some of these have ✨batteries ✨ which are most likely looooooong dead thanks to being 23 years old

since the new UTDR newsletter comic gave Drunk Bun canon pronouns I went to go update my few posts about her Swap MH version, but I have a small dilemma:

personally I don't think it's implying her name is Bunny given that the next profile has a line referring to her as 'the Bunny', but even so I'm not sure if I should just change her name anyway and give up my headcanon name Harebrain?

Hi! I have two questions if that's alright?

1. I know that rats fluffing out their fur is typically a sign of distress, but I've noticed two of my older girls do this sometimes seemingly at random with no signs of anything else being wrong. I've checked them over a dozen times and they never seem to be having any pain or other issues. I'm wondering if this could be something to not be too concerned about?

2. I really want to make a dig box for my rats but I'm very worried about the mess, and about how to clean it up. Do you have any resources for making good dig boxes?

Thank you for your questions!

1. Fluffing fur can indeed be a sign of pain or aggression, but that’s not the case 100% of the time. Rats will often have puffy fur when they first wake up, or in a response to the cold. Both are perfectly normal reactions and nothing to worry about! If it doesn’t seem like either of those are the cause, a vet visit can’t hurt just to be sure there’s nothing else going on.

2. Dig boxes are super fun and I’m glad to hear you’re wanting to make one! After a lot of trial and error (complete with dirt covered floors), I’ve determined that my favorite method is using a big clear plastic bin with a hole cut out of the lid for the rats to use as an entrance.

You can cut the plastic of most storage tubs pretty easily with a box cutter and maybe some strong scissors like tin snips if you’ve got them. I’d recommend covering the inside of the rim with tape if there’s any sharp edges (or if you have hairless rats, since they have less skin protection). When you make the bin, you want to choose a tall one that you can fill halfway up with bedding like coco fiber. For example, here are my successes and failures:

Attempt 1 (failure):

The bin was too short, I filled it to the top with dirt and the rats had a blast kicking it all over the playpen.

Attempt 2 (success):

The bin is tall enough to fill up halfway, but short enough where the rats can jump in and out easily through the hole in the lid. It keeps the dirt in pretty well and lets the rats dig to their hearts content. You can even remove the lid and grow cat grass or other rat-friendly plants inside the bin, then give it back to the rats once it’s fully grown so they can have fun demolishing it.

There are lots of ways to do it (followers, be sure to share your own methods if you want!) but this is my personal favorite since it lets the rats engage in natural behavior while still retaining the sanity of their human family.

My new idog dance (Blinkie) with Plum (purple) and Bix (white)! The dance is super cool and works really well, I’m excited to test how well it can hear music when not plugged into an aux :O

Fun fact all 3 of my idogs first songs played were lemon demon, started with Plum bc I thought two trucks would be objectively one of the funniest things to play on an idog but it’s turned into a tradition at this point (Bix’s was cabinet man and Blinkies was the only house that’s not on fire yet)
