HC: Post Starcourt Billy adopts a therapy dog- a pitbull named Scorpion. Billy calls him "Scorp" for short.
Scorp is a very nervous dog who usually doesn't go up to people, but he immediately goes right up to Billy, who's sitting down, and rests a paw on his knee.
Scorp was abandoned on July 4th, and he hates fireworks, so when Independence Day comes around, he and Billy cuddle together on the couch watching whatever's on TV. They calm each other down. Billy pets Scorp, and Steve holds Billy's hand.
Scorp is very overprotective of Billy.
Billy can't walk him for long- his heart is weak, and he's still going to rehab to strengthen his arms and legs. He can't move as fast anymore, plus he's got a portable oxygen tank to lug around. Scorp doesn't tug or rush him, though.
If Billy tries walking for more than his body can withstand, Scorp will bark at him, turn around, and point his nose in the direction of home, a safe place they share with Steve and his service dog, Lola (Steve has a peanut allergy).
Scorp adores Lola, and Max's seeing eye dog Rex. The jury is still out on Steve, but he's warming up to him.

currently thinking about max needing glasses after waking up and just hating them so much cause they always hurt her nose after a while and they get jostled too easily and they fog up for no reason and she just hates them they suck and shed rather just not see until she absolutely has to
Steve (who knows damn well he probably needs to get his vision and hearing checked but hasn't yet because he doesn't wanna) sees this and is like "hey max would you mind coming with me and robin for my eye exam? i could use the support" and max is like "i know exactly what you're doing but anything to get out of school i guess" and they get there and the doctors are like yeah you need glasses like yesterday (and hes hoh but thats another appointment)
so they're both struggling and fucking hate their glasses but they can at least help remind the other to wear them and start trying to come up with solutions to their glasses problems (i can totally see max with those glasses necklace things to keep them from falling off)
also now with 2 members wearing glasses (and one of them not being in a coma) the party adjusts and is more normal about them and pestering max about wearing them less and eventually the glasses (and hearing aids) just become part of their normal
just brother and sister steve and max duo with glasses please. i don't wear glasses but my sibling does and complains about them lol. also feel free to steal this idea im literally just a monkey with a typewriter

I know we’ve all swooned over Dustin singing “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeny Todd to Max in the hospital, but have we considered swapping in Mike? He feels incredibly guilty for Max’s involvement in their mission and believes everything to be his fault. He sits by her side, keeping her safe and defending her from evil, especially while under her coma. Even while she is defenseless, locked inside Vecna’s mind, Mike will keep her safe. No. Matter. What.
I would love to see a scene like this where Mike sits at her bedside (preferably when she can’t respond) and pours his heart out to her. He tells her about his depression, survivor’s guilt, and self-appointed duty to protect her. Despite their constant bickering and antagonism, Mike and Max are two sides of the same coin. They operate on the same wavelength: Everything that goes wrong is mine to fix. I brought this upon myself therefore I don’t deserve help or assistance. Even if Max can’t respond and assure Mike he does in fact deserve help and none of what’s happened is his fault, it would lighten Mike’s burden to acknowledge and name his emotions out loud. Duffers, if you read this, I am begging you to add this scene. Please let Mike Wheeler be vulnerable, acknowledge his trauma, and start to heal. ❤️‍🩹

I want Max to be blind
I want Max to be an ambulatory wheelchair user who’s only goal in therapy is to skate again
I want Will to make a magnetic board with DnD figurines that El moves around so Max can feel along for what’s happening on the court of Lucas’s games even if he never plays
I want Max to listen to Eddie’s metal tapes while she’s still bedridden with Dustin and have her share all her Kate Bush tapes too
I want her to get in tune with the upside down due to the loss of her vision and become closer with Will because of it
I want El and Max to fuck around and see how well she can break after being psychically launched
I want her to beat the shit out of people with her crutches, even if that means she falls to the ground
I want to see Max deal and live with her sudden disabilities, but to do more than suffer. To want to live, and heal, and be happy because she’s just a kid and to show an audience that disability is a depressive death sentence is an irresponsible move— especially when the character and target audience is kids

It’s that time again where i haven’t posted gay for awhile so all the bots start following me. Conveniently, it’s also WIP Wednesday, so here’s two WIPs for the world:
-------
1. Graduation
(As HS class of 23 also I claim the modern au kids as HS class of 23 because none of us returned to school after freshman spring break either)
Dustin groaned awake as his alarm blared in his ear. He scrubbed the sleep out of his eyes and squinted at the bright light of his phone screen—9:00 am—pressing the stop button.
He sat up and yawned, then reached for his glasses. The world came into focus as he put them on, both physically and mentally.
Today was May 26, 2023.
High School Graduation.
Dustin leapt out of bed, comforter flying. He put on his pajama pants and swept out of his room to the smell of breakfast food, specifically pancakes (or possibly waffles; the hard yet better option).
He was about to make his way out to grab a plate, but an alarm blaring further down the hallway caught his ear.
He made his way down to Max’s room, careful to open the door quietly. Her alarm was the worst one: the one that sounded like some sort of jail alarm, and it was always at max volume. Dustin plugged his ears (as best he could) and turned it off before shaking Max awake.
“Max, Max get up,”
A groan. Dustin rolled his eyes.
“Max, it’s grad day!!”
No response.
“Max,” Dustin smirked and whispered in her ear, “Lucas is wearing a sexy Sailor Moon costume,” he singsonged, and Max jolted awake.
Quickly, Max settled herself back down with a groan, and Dustin’s heart sank.
“Fucking fuck,”
“Wheelchair?” Dustin asked, resigned. Max had been trying to build up her strength the past few days to maximize the possibility of having an aid-free day. After 2 1/2 years of PT, aid-free days were just as common or crutch or wheelchair days, but planning one was near impossible. It was lucky Max had them in the first place anyway: she’d been told the day she woke from her coma that she’d never walk again.
What the doctors hadn’t realized was the best place for her to stay (one story, not in the middle of the woods, two people) was the Henderson home, and Henderson blood was some of the most stubborn around. Claudia and Dustin (plus Steve when he still lived with them, and the rest of the Party) all made sure Max got as much practice walking as she could get.
Max nodded solemnly, and Dustin grabbed the chair—the Party decorated it ahead, just in case—from the corner of the room. As he did so, Max put on her own glasses and re-sat up slowly.
“So, graduation. You ready?” Max smirked lazily, and Dustin raised his eyebrow.
“What do you think?” Max laughed, and seamlessly scooted herself into her chair.
“Push or no push?” Dustin asked.
“I’d take a chauffeur,” Max responded cooly, and Dustin pulled a section of her hair in retaliation. He was not a chauffeur. “HEY! Okay, okay, jeez. I should be fine,” Dustin nodded and walked towards the door so she could change.
Actually…he probably should too.
Stained pj pants and no shirt wasn’t really a look the school was looking for onstage.
“Call for Ma or me if you need anything,” Max rolled her eyes as she nodded, and Dustin left grinning. He made his way back to his room, shutting and locking the door behind him. He grabbed the dress shirt and pants he’d washed and hung up the previous night from his closet. The dress shirt was a light lavender with small vertical stripes, and was brand new for the occasion. His dress pants were black, and the same dress pants he’d used for choir or any other special event for the past 4 years.
God…4 years. 4 years at Hawkins High and now it was all over.
His thoughts weee interrupted by a heavy bang-bang-bang on his wall.
Dustin rolled his eyes and grinned, zipping up his fly before going back to Max’s room.
“Pants?” He asked immedeately as he opened the door. Sure enough, Max was in her pink floral blouse and pajama pants, with her own pair of black dress pants laid haphazardly on her bed.
She nodded. “Pants.” Dustin nodded in response and shut and locked the door.
When Max had a moderate amount of pain or more, usually it meant she needed help getting her pants on. Sometimes there were days where she needed help with nothing or everything, but if she needed help usually it was just for pants.
Dustin lifted her out of her chair and squinted his eyes shut while holding her sturdy from behind.
“Done!” Came Max’s voice, and Dustin opened his eyes to help her back into the chair. Dustin snatched her palm gloves from her bedside drawer, and chucked them in her lap.
“Thanks, ass,” Max smirked and slipped on the gloves, and wheeled herself out the door Dustin held open for her.
The scent of heavenly fatty food wafted through Dustin’s nose once again as he followed his sister out to the kitchen. Ma had her back turned, frying up something—sausage or eggs, probably.
“Ma!” Dustin called, before noticing her earbuds in.
“We should not have introduced her to noise cancellation.” Max commented.
“Agreed. She’s deafer than Steve with those things in,” Ma had forced Steve to go see a ear doctor after she noticed him not hearing anything unless he was facing her---something Dustin regretted not noticing sooner. Apparently, all the concussions had lead him to being hard of hearing, which lead to him wearing hearing aids and everyone in the Party learning sign.
------
Sibling Summer Camp!
(A modern summer camp au with an inhuman twist. This excerpt is from the first chapter, where everyone is first arriving at camp.)
They parked and got out, walking to their luggage in the back. A few seconds into opening the van door, and another van raced past them, parking close on their right. Whoever was inside was blaring music, and singing along so loud Suzie could hear every word they said.
"Put your hands up and reach for the sky, CRY FOR ABSOLUTIOOOON!"
Rock music wasn’t Suzie’s fave, but yikes.
Suzie noticed their Florida license plate as the van shook to the song’s beat.
Typical Floridians. Probably.
There were a bunch of various rainbow magnets and bumper stickers, though, so at least the rockers were safe. Their van was maroon and tan, though Suzie could see hints of washed off paint across the side and back. Had it been graffitied?
“Hey, Suze, a little help?” Oh, shit. Suzie pulled away from her people watching to help Argyle unload their suitcases. He had taken care of the larger few, but the smaller ones were all the way in the back. They were here for a month, after all, and while they were promised laundry service for their clothes, there were many things neither of them wanted to leave behind.
Suzie shuffled a bag sounding like a bunch of glass bottles, and paused, sighing.
“Argyle, how many bongs did you bring?” Argyle smiled and shrugged.
“I didn’t bring my whole collection, if you’re asking.”
She hit him with a glare.
“How many?”
“…13?”
“YOU BROUGHT 13 BONGS?" Suzie exclaimed, and Argyle shrugged.
"Could be more, could be less, I dunno,"
Just because the two of them got on swimmingly didn’t mean they never got into disagreements. Usually, these disagreements had to do with bongs.
"Why are 13 ish bongs something necessary for camp! I’m sure you won’t even use half of them!” Suzie grumbled angrily. She couldn’t expect Argyle to not bring his stash, but an entire bag of 13 bongs??? In a state where recreational weed wasn’t even legal??
“I heard 13 bongs,” Suzie looked up, and standing at the mouth of the van was a lanky tall boy with the darkest color palette she had ever seen. Seriously, the black hair, band tank, and jeans were so stark against his pale skin, he almost looked like a vampire.
“Who the heck are you?” and “Wanna borrow one?” were said at the exact same time. Unluckily for Suzie, the boy only heard Argyle’s question, and not hers.
"Nah, I packed a few myself, but nice to know I’ll have a smokin’ buddy!" This guy—obviously from Florida—had southern slang with a midwest accent. Weird.
"EDDIE! GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE!" Called another voice, and Suzie’s question was answered. "YOU AREN’T LEAVIN’ ME TO DO ALL THIS WORK, YOU SLIMY SACK OF DICKS!" This was likely Eddie’s sibling, left to do all the work unloading their things. Argyle and Eddie exchanged goodbyes, and Eddie ran off to his sibling.
"I found a weed guy!" Argyle grinned, and Suzie shook her head while smiling.
"Yes Argyle, you found a weed guy,” Suzie panned to the remaining luggage in the back, “now can we please get the rest of our bags out? Otherwise you won’t be seeing weed guy for a month,” Argyle nodded and started pulling the luggage onto the ground.

I felt like writing angst, so here’s lumax hurt/comfort drabble for you, loves.
Words: 736
-
“Hey, hey, talk to me here.” Lucas’ soft voice interrupted Max’s spiral of pathetic thoughts. She was lying on the hospital bed, looking at the ceiling, not being able to move or feel anything in her body. It was annoying and if she had more water in her system, she would cry angry tears, but because she was still exhausted and dehydrated, she could only stare at the ceiling, hoping it won’t stare back at her this time. Without Vecna around, that is.
“But it’s stupid. And… not that important, anyway.” She sighed, hearing her groggy, hoarse voice. She wasn’t supposed to sound like that. The only thing keeping her talking was the doctor, who said that talking would make her voice and throat better with time. She swallowed hard before speaking. “I’m just emotional, that’s all.”
“MadMax.” Was all that Lucas said, but Max could see in her imagination his puppy-like eyes, begging her to open up to him. It’s the sight that would probably annoy her long ago, but now, she wished she was able to see it again. And she didn’t want to open up, not really, not to Lucas or anyone else. After everything that happened, she was just really fucking tired.
But she felt helpless and vulnerable, so she thought: fuck it. Just this one time.
“Just- Just don’t laugh.” She said finally, gathering her courage before hearing him hum in agreement. “I just- I had that stupid dream that maybe- in some future or whatever, I would be able to, you know, walk down the isle on ou- my wedding day.” She corrected herself, not wanting to be too vulnerable at once, and although she was pretty sure Lucas did catch that, he didn’t comment or laugh, so she continued. “But here I am. Everything will be known in the future, weeks, months, I don’t even know, and right now, all I can do is lay here, and- and I can’t even turn my head to look at you. It’s- I feel so weak and helpless and angry, and I, I can’t do anything about it, Lucas. It’s tiring.”
She still couldn’t cry or move to look at him, so she did the only thing she could - lick her lips, trying to wet them, if only a little. It was better than just staring at the ceiling, but God, was it pathetic as hell. Her thoughts were a mess. Max knew Lucas enough to know that he wouldn’t just leave her alone - he said that much, just after she woke up a few days ago - but part of her was still scared that after hearing her helpless vulnerable self, he will just walk away. And that made that whole experience even scarier than it already was for her.
But before she could say something again, try to joke or mock him maybe, Lucas’ face came into her view. He wasn’t grinning, and she could tell by the bags under his eyes that he was tired, but… but she saw very clearly that bright, genuine smile on his face, and that overwhelming love in his eyes, that still could make Max’s heart flutter, even after so long of not being together.
“It’s not stupid.” His voice firm, as he slowly lowered himself to her face, and gave her a peck on the cheek, keeping his lips a little longer on her skin than necessary. “You can do it. I know you can. You will be able to walk and dance, and kick asses in no time! And, after all, hey. You’re my MadMax. You’ve already rocked my world with your badassery, so I’m sure you can do it again.”
Max felt a lump form in her throat, seeing his grin and hearing those words. Lucas was so good for her, too good, really. But he was her rock, and she knew that he will be there for her no matter what.
Feeling emotional, Max was now grateful, that she wasn’t able to cry.
“Y,You are so, stupid, Stalker.” She said, trying to hide her affection with playful insult, knowing that Lucas will understand her anyway. And she didn’t say that words, yet, she couldn’t do it just now, but hoped that she could deliver that two important words to Lucas with her smile and her eyes alone—the appreciation of just being with her all this lonely time.
I love you.

A Behind the Scenes of: Jane's Photos
Jonathan and El go over some of her photos in the book and give insight into the stories behind them.
On AO3.
Ships: Elumax, jargancy, jopper, byler
Warnings: none.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The video opens with Jonathan and El. Jonathan greets: “Hi, I’m Jonathan Byers, the main photographer and editor of A Collection of Queer Photography. Today my sister is visiting, so me and Jane are going to look at her photos in the book,” Jonathan starts the video.
El is sitting on the other chair, her hair up in a messy bun and long dangly earrings. She’s wearing a patterned dress with a loose sweater over it as she smiles into the camera, her eyes a little too wide. All the years have made her integrate more, but there is still an edge of odd about her, though she wears it well.
“Some people online have commented that we do not look like each other, that is because Jane is adopted,” Jonathan says. “She came to live with us when she was fourteen, lived with Jim before that and she took an interest in photography in ‘86 to capture all the memories that might get lost if you don’t capture them. It really helped when Max was in a coma.”
“That is correct,” El nods with a smile still on her face.
“You wanna do the honors?” Jonathan asks, holding the book out to her which has a few tabs peaking out again.
“Yes, please,” El answers as she takes it and flips it open.
Jonathan meanwhile says: “She has quite a few in there, so we’re not talking about all of them, just a selection that Jane made.” Then he turns back to El and asks: “Which one are we starting with?”
“This one,” El replies, showing Jonathan the page as between them the image appears.
The photo is taken in the Hopper-Byers house living room. Hopper has his arms around Joyce’s waist, while she has hers around his neck. The two of them are kissing passionately. Around them are flower petals and there are two wine glasses on the table. Hopper had coordinated with El on the moment, so all the petals floated like a garden galaxy.
“She Said Yes,” Jonathan reads. “Ahw, when mom and dad got engaged in ‘91. That is a beautiful photo.”
“It is,” El agrees. “Dad was very nervous about it. We rehearsed it a hundred times while mom was at work. Picking up petals is a pain.”
Jonathan laughs at that, before he asks: “Why did you pick this one?”
“I think it shows how hard dad tried and the effort he puts in,” El says. “He isn’t a big gestures kind of person, but he knows mom would have liked something like this, so he made the effort. I think that’s so sweet.”
“Totally,” Jonathan agrees with a soft smile. “And it says a lot about them too. How they relate to each other.”
El nods, before flipping to the next tab. She Said Yes gets replaced by Kitchen Helper, which is of Argyle taking the turkey from the oven. Jonathan is hovering behind him with the roasted potatoes in his hands, which have been deposited there by Argyle moments earlier.
“This is Kitchen Helper from thanksgiving 1991,” El says. “I think it is a very cute photo. You are always so scared Argyle is going to burn himself, even if he’s a professional chef.”
Jonathan blushes a little and Argyle comments: “You do hover a little, baby boy,” from behind the camera. His sound quality is much better, he must have gotten a mic.
“But you do burn yourself,” Jonathan splutters, defending himself. “You’re always reaching into hot ovens and surrounded by burning oil.”
“Hazard of the job, buttercup,” Argyle says, a smile audible in his voice.
“Doesn’t mean I have to like it,” Jonathan pouts, while El giggles at the two of them.
“See,” she says. “This is exactly the dynamic you can see in the photo.”
Jonathan pauses for a second, then gives into it and laughs: “I guess it is. And it is a cute photo, I love it.”
At that El grins widely, before flipping ahead again. The photo that comes on stage is of Max walking the stage with her crutches. Her head is held high and pride leaves her every pore. As she looks at it, El can’t help but light up with pride.
“Max Walking the Stage,” Jonathan reads, leaning over so he can also see. He tells the audience: “That was 1993, when the twerps all graduated college.”
“You’re only a few years older than us,” El points out.
“And that’s a few years enough,” Jonathan grins back, ruffling her hair while she tries to duck away with a halfhearted protest and a grin on her face.
Once they’ve stopped their little tussling war and both have straightened out again, El says: “I love how proud Max looks. She was so nervous about it, because she was having a bad day, so she needed the crutches, unlike at high school when she could manage without them for the stage walk itself.”
“I couldn’t tell,” Jonathan says, sounding a little surprised, like he also hadn’t known that.
“She did not want you to,” El tells him gently. “She hated that she was even nervous about it, because she did not want it to be a thing she was ashamed off. She never wants people to think that about her. For her the crutches are a part of her, not a weakness or something extra. She is proud of her disability, she just knew that people in the audience would pity her and she hated it. But she is so strong and stubborn and she walked that stage with pride.” El’s voice turns a little mushy as she adds: “God, I love her.”
Jonathan smiles fondly at his sister and softly says: “That’s lovely, Jane. I think you managed to capture that defiance perfectly. It’s very much a Max photo.”
El smiles back at him, before there is a cut, the book open on a new page. El introduces it: “This one is Late LA Nights from when me, Max and Lucas moved to LA in 1993 where Mike and Will lived.”
On screen the photo is of Mike and Will dancing in comfortable clothes in their living room. They’re close together, Mike’s arms around Will’s waist, noses pressed together and their eyes closed.
“Mike and Will love dancing,” Jonathan comments. “I don’t know how that happened, but it’s so sweet.”
“I blame you,” El says. “You made Will like music. And mom and dad, who dance.”
“You’re not a dancer?” Jonathan quirks a brow. “I would have sworn I heard [BEEP] talk about how her aunt took her to a dance class.”
When there is a beep a note appears on screen: *Mike and Will have asked the names of their daughters to be kept out, thank you for understanding.
“She’s cute and she really wanted to,” El defends herself. “Besides, I do not hate dancing, I just lived in the same city as these two for too many years.”
“You and Max are just as bad,” Jonathan points out, though he sounds fond. “And you still live in the same city as them.”
“Max told me we are cute when we do it,” El informs him seriously. “And why would I want to live in a different city from them? They are my friends.”
“Of course,” Jonathan says, then moves on. “But this is a cute photo and a little snippet of Mike and Will. What’s the next one?”
“This one,” El shows him a page, pointing to the lower right corner.
Free Time, nice,” Jonathan says, while on screen an image of Lucas in sport’s clothes shooting hoops on a basketball court on a sunny autumn day appears. In the background is Max riding her skateboard, her crutches are on the ground near the photographer, as if they were just put down to take the photograph.
“It is very nice, yes,” El agrees. “As you said, I like capturing memories and this is a fond one. We used to go to this park all the time, now we have found a new one closer to our home, but this one was the one we first found when we moved to LA. On Max’s good days, she will skateboard and we will make flower crowns or bracelets or braid each other’s hair when it was a bad one. Or she will read to me.”
“That sounds very lovely,” Jonathan tells her, despite already knowing it. Just to affirm her in her recollection.
El smiles and nods. “It is,” she confirms, before flipping the page again to the next tab.
On screen Free Time gets replaced by Sea Chickens. It is from a Californian beach, the early spring already nice enough to allow a day at the beach. The photograph is taken from the sand, but is of the sea itself, where Lucas, Max, Mike and Will are playing in the water.
They might be adults, but that doesn’t stop them from playing chicken. Max is on Lucas’ shoulders, while Will is on Mike’s. Lucas has his hand in Mike’s face, pushing him away, while Max and Will have each other’s hands in a hold, pushing without success. All of them are laughing.
“This was one of the first swim weather days of 1994,” El says. “Winter does not really exist in LA, that is weird, but it is not always weather to swim. I am not a big fan of swimming, but it is fun to watch the others be idiots.”
Jonathan snorts at that and agrees: “They do seem to turn into five year olds whenever they come near a body of water.”
“They do,” El agrees.
“I like how Mike’s face is completely smushed by Lucas,” Jonathan points out. “And you can really see how strong Will’s arms are.”
“Will had been experimenting with sculptures during this time,” El recalls. “He had been lugging around all sorts of heavy materials.” She wrinkles her nose and adds: “Mike was horny about it. I heard too much about my brother’s arms than necessary.”
Jonathan chokes on a laugh as he wheezes: “Oh my god, I am so glad I missed that,” in a manner that is unlike how he usually is on camera, seemingly a lot less shy when joking with El.
El joins in as she giggles: “I suddenly related to dad a lot, I almost instated a three inches apart rule in my house,” which sets Jonathan off again.
The two laughing gets cut off and they appear calmed down again. The two are a little red in the face from laughter, but bravely move onto the next photo.
On screen appears a photo of Max on her knees in the living room of the Mayfield-Sinclair apartment. She is playing with Sir Fluff. On the couch behind her are Mike and Will. Mike is lounging, legs thrown over Will’s lap as he watches Max and the cat. Will is rubbing Mike’s ankles absentmindedly as he talks with Lucas, who is standing next to the couch.
“This is Sir Fluff and Company,” Jonathan tells the viewer, before asking El: “Do you remember when you took this one?”
“Not exactly,” El says. “We hang out at each other’s place a lot. It’s just natural. We have each others keys, had them back then too. We just show up.”
“I love that,” Jonathan says. “I’m pretty sure we have the keys to the Munson house and mom and dad’s house.”
“We have a copy of Erica’s key too from when we stayed at her place when she had the conference,” Argyle pipes up.
“We still have that?” Jonathan asks. “Should we- Should we give that back?”
“Nah, she would have asked,” Argyle replies.
“Sure,” Jonathan agrees, before turning back to the photo. “So this was a typical scene?”
“Yeah, Lucas does this thing where he will get up to grab something to drink, then forget because he started a conversation again. That is why he is standing there,” El explains. “And Mike will always take over the couch like a mouth breather.”
“He does sprawl, doesn’t he,” Jonathan says with a look of mild, yet playful disgust on his face.
The two of them giggle again, in the action it is clear that gossiping together is a habit both have picked up over the years. Even with the camera there, they easily fall into the giggling comments and jokes.
After a second, El flips the page again and smiles: “That was when you and Nancy and Argyle came to visit.”
“That was so fun,” Jonathan says. “I love being able to come out to see you. Having careers in different cities sucks. Why did we do that?”
“Because Nancy is stubborn and Max is too?” El suggests.
Jonathan makes a face that says ‘Fair enough,’ then bends over the book again. The photo is of the guest room at the Mayfield-Sinclairs. On the bed are Argyle, Jonathan and Nancy, the three of them still fast asleep. Nancy is on her back in the middle, while Argyle and Jonathan are both turned to her, heads practically on her shoulders. Argyle has a leg thrown over both of them, while Jonathan has an arm over Nancy, hand buried in Argyle’s shirt.
Jonathan comments: “I will never get over how tall Argyle is.”
“You love it, baby,” Argyle chips in.
“I do,” Jonathan agrees easily as he looks up, love sick smile on his face.
El hits him on the arm and says: “Do not be gross.”
“Ouch, Jane,” Jonathan pouts. “And I wasn’t being gross.”
That earns him a look that communicates that El very much does not agree with that statement, but she lets it be as she moves back to the page: “I think it is cute how you two mirror each other even when asleep.”
“It’s comfortable,” Jonathan shrugs.
“Do you guys still have a schedule about who gets to be in the middle?” El asks, while Jonathan blushes. Innocently, she adds: “I think that is very sweet. You guys are great at communicating and planning.”
That softens Jonathan up and he smiles: “We do, but it’s not a hard law. And we worked hard on that communication. You do the same with Max and Lucas.”
“We had you to be an example,” El says earnestly.
You can see how Jonathan tears up a bit, in lieu of an answer he snatches El close and hugs her tightly. El startles a little but melts into the touch with a happy yet confused smile. There is rustling and before the video cuts, you can hear Argyle mutter: “Gotta get in on that hugging action.”
After the cut, the two are sitting again, Jonathan’s eyes are a little red rimmed, but he is smiling widely as he says: “And we’re at the last photo now. It’s Jonathan’s New Years Kiss taken in 1995, but only just.”
The photo that appears on screen is of Jonathan lowering his camera in surprise as Argyle and Nancy kiss him on his cheeks at the same time.
“This one is cute,” El says. “You are always snapping photographs on New Years. Nancy says you cannot stop working.”
“Nancy also can’t stop working,” Jonathan pouts a little, before he must admit: “But I do find it hard to put the camera down. It’s just hard when you view the world through what would be a great photo and then you can’t take it when you see one, you know.”
“I know,” El says. “But dad says taking photos of the good times with the mental camera is also good sometimes.”
“That is because his photos are always blurry and his finger is always in there too,” Jonathan points out.
“Mom agrees,” El counters.
“Okay, so maybe there is something to it, but I have been getting better about it,” Jonathan defends himself.
“He has,” Argyle defends him from behind the camera.
“Thank you.”
“I believed you,” El promises, though she looks a little mischievous as she does.
“Sure,” Jonathan tells her, like he doesn’t believe her, El doesn’t seem to mind. Jonathan goes back to the topic at hand: “But it is a cute photo, even if I look like an idiot.”
“That is your face, as Will would say,” El tells him.
“You and Will need to stop hanging out,” Jonathan replies, to which he only gets a smile in return, so he rolls his eyes back.
There is a cut, then Jonathan is saying to El: “I really enjoyed looking at these photos with you. You have a fun style of taking photos and you really added a new perspective in the book. Thank you.”
“You are welcome,” El smiles. “It was fun to contribute.”
“Tell the people where they can find Jane’s stuff,” Argyle directs from behind the camera, obviously more familiar with YouTube than the two in front it.
“Oh, yeah, if you want to see more of Jane’s photography it is @JaneMPhotos on Instagram,” Jonathan says. “It is mostly photos of their pets and it is delightful.”
On screen two photos appear. The left one is of Lucas laying on the ground with a defeated look on his face, on his chest lies Hank, their husky, with what can only be a smug look on his face. On the right is a photo of Max, Pino on her finger. She is whistling to the bird and the bird is whistling right back.
Then Jonathan signs off: “So, yeah, that is a behind the scene of the photos Jane took for this book. Thank you so much for being here.”
“You are welcome,” El replies.
“Bye,” Jonathan waves and El follows after a second.
I’m writing a fic where Eddie, Steve, Dustin, and Max are all playing scrabble, and Eddie is technically the “judge” to make sure all the words are fair but really he’s on Maxs team to help her bc she’s blind and still partially in casts. and he made all the scrabble pieces braille so she could play on her own (to the best of her ability) and Steve and Dustin just spend the entire time arguing over wether the words they put down count. and it’s chaos in the best way possible.
i love my little found family
