Postcards from Snagglepuss
Catalina Ahoy, again!
BETWEEN LA JOLLA AND SANTA CATALINA ISLAND: "Snagglepuss," Peter Potamus was asking me as the vessel of his Magic Divers, the Diver's Delight, set sail from La Jolla to Catalina Island, "I assume you still remember the last time so many of us Funtastics were on Catalina for the Avalon Harbour Underwater Cleanup."
"Before the pandemic, even," replied I. "Huckleberry Hound and I arranged it spur of the moment, more or less, as a Character Convocation of sorts."
"Especially so when Lippy the Lion and I found that iron bedframe in Avalon Harbour."
"I assume they still talk about it!"
"Somehow, during our recent diving escapade in the Caribbean, yours truly, the Ambassador for Diving, in a way, of Hanna-Barberadom, thought it might be worthwhile to bring our dive crew back to Catalina to join in the Underwater Cleanup this year." (Pause) "Which, as you know, is the one and only time in the year when diving is allowed in Avalon Bay on Catalina Island!"
"And no doubt TC's clowder will be present as well."
"As guests of the legendary Catalina Diving Clowder," as Peter explained it with his suave, come-hither sort of charm. "Ourselves, this vessel will be at anchor a little to the south of Avalon, what with the harbour area being cleaned up Saturday."
"So we'll be staying aboard the Diver's Delight for the most part?"
"We do have a couple of inflatable Zodiac boats as will ferry us divers to Avalon."
Presently, Huckleberry Hound "himself" came along and noted where the Magic Divers "will certainly be in readiness" for the weekend, and that Top Cat called to confirm his clowder's presence.
"I do assume," saith I, "that the Diving Clowder will have their quarters being Hospitality Headquarters for our diving confraternity."
"And, later in the weekend," Peter chimed in, "perhaps inviting us for some diving galore."
"Won't that be interesting?"
"Especially with the Divin' Wolf Pups expected to put in their due per the cleanup."
"You mean Bon-Bon and Ding-a-Ling?" (Who, as if on cue, made their presence known, both responding together, "Who else?!")
Anyhow, there's bound to be more from Catalina in upcoming editions. You're sure to want to enjoy them....

"IF THAT'S THE CASE THEN I guess I feel less bad since I'm not really missing out on anything." She listened to Catalina speak, hearing no filter from her words. The other didn't need to explain her point. There was an understanding between them. It was nice to have someone who gets it. They didn't have to elaborate on what they meant or justify their emotions to each other.
"Hopefully. Our selection isn't bad so far." They were well-rounded men, but the only issue was their emotional unavailability. She and Catalina hadn't really made an effort to fully put themselves out there. Agatha didn't think she was ready. She doubted her capability to open up. As for Catalina, there was someone she had to settle things with. It was obvious that she was avoiding it as much as possible. Agatha didn't have a solid opinion about the Swede, but he would either make or break her best friend. "You can't really know unless you give it a shot. I won't encourage you to throw yourself into danger, but maybe dip your toe in the water, and see how it will go. Follow your gut. And by this, I mean dive into it without doubts and take everything as it is. Don't get stuck on the mindset that it will fail when you haven't even started yet." In short, she just had to follow her heart. She wished she didn't beat herself up over her past relationships. She was a victim. It wasn't her fault.
"Owen and I were friends before. He was there for me when I grieved for my child and my first love. At that time, the twins were newborns. Their mother just died from birth. And then he gave me the idea that we could get married and have a family. I'd stand in as the twins' mother and his wife. He swept me off my feet and gave me what I wanted. And being gullible, I accepted. I thought it would fill that emptiness. I grew to love the twins like my own, but I should've known better." She never thought she'd ever reveal the true story to anyone.
Hearing her best friend's assurance, she smiled at her and squeezed her hand. "I love your optimism but I hope it doesn't only apply to me. It should also apply to you. Everything happens for a reason. It will all make sense someday."

I previously read The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by the same author and was impressed with the way the author built scenes. I believe Mexican Gothic proceeds Doctor Moreau but the authors use of detail as she describes scenes is consistent in both novels. It really allows the reader to imagine, and build the world in which our characters live.
Noemí is a socialite from the city and is sent on a mission to High Place, in the very rural country, to investigate the odd musings of her cousin, Catalina who has married into the family at High Place.
Upon her arrival she is met with less than a warm welcome. The house is not only drab but dreary, lacking electricity, warmth and love. Only faint whispers are allowed and her first interactions with the Doyle family members are haunting. Howard Doyle, the patriarch of the family who’s interactions send shivers down your spine. Victor Doyle, the next in line and Catalina’s husband. Florence Doyle, the cousin who tends to Catalina and the home with an iron fist and Francis, seemingly the only one with a soul and with whom our main character connects.
Noemí immediately starts having nightmares, every time she closes her eyes. Leaving her tired, confused and weakened as the days pass. Upon the height of the story we learn the truth about the Doyle family, their mines and how the house and everyone in it is connected. Upon this discovery, Noemí must fight for her life and that of her cousin.
I really enjoy Silvia’s story telling and would love to dive into more of her novels.

My mutuals my besties have really come through with some amazing names for bars, so I want to share some with you because next chapter of MC is rly gonna world build the shit out of the Night Scene in CC
From @sentryskyhawk we got The Soldier’s First Shot - the bar where Privates and Last Year of Military Academy Cadets go to. Pretty low stakes nothing fancy but the folks who go there feel super important because this means they really made it they're soldiers so they're hot shit. This is the type of bar where Rebecca Catalina would go to in the beginning of her career to look for potential mates. This is the bar where Roy Mustang got absolutely fucking plastered because he and Maes were celebrating graduating the Academy. (This bar is in Central City). Kimblee and Lode would go here too. Honestly everyone who ever went to the CC MA and graduated went here to celebrate becoming a Private.
Super infamous cocktail Ethanol Blast was a rite of passage here. If you survived that you could survive anything the Military had in store for you.
From @kimbleefucker we got a really really really classy bar restaurant called Gloria. This is the place you can only get into if a) you're the Fuhrer President or b) you know the owners and they owe you a kidney
Gracia's family boasts coming here often. They only went twice. The Armstrongs go here often.
From @xathira The Last Bullet - super sad fucking bar. It tried to be peppy and bring in soldiers as customers but it somehow turned into the bar where widows and widowers come. Business has never been better. Gonna soon become Gracia's favourite bar eyyy ;)))
Swan Dive- this is just a nice swanky bar for civilians. Lots of good bands play here. Really great atmosphere. The mascot is actually a goose. Nobody dares to tell the owner tho. If she thinks it's a Swan then it's a Swan.
Some alchemy oriented bars that cater to alchemists called Spiritus vini and Aqua vitae from @doyouknowhowtowaltz - you go inside any bar like this and you are very close to exiting with a tattoo of some kind. You just better hope it's not an alchemy array. Think of it as the equivalent of those bars where they hold those painful modern poetry nights but it's all about alchemy. You would think these bars would try and get State Alchemists to come here, but you would be wrong because those types of alchemists are sell outs. Roy Mustang is banned from Aqua Vitae. Kimblee and Spiritus Vini owners have beef because of improper alchemy practises.
Izumi and Sig come here to drink when they come to CC. Really good wine and spirits.
Now some of mine:
Lady's Garter Belt - this is the bar Christmas runs. Name up to change but I want something scandalous.
Veteran's First Drink- used to be THE bar of Amestris if you're a soldier. Back in the day it used to even be THE THE BAR. (in a legal dispute with the Deserters Last Drink)
Deserter's Last Drink - if the VFD puts up a sign in their window saying Happy Veterans Day, the DLD will put up a sign listing the death toll of Ishval, if the VFD puts up a sign saying 25% off for special drinks, the DLD will pull up with a 40% off sign, if the VFD says happy birthday to the Fuhrer, the DLD will put up a graph of all the skirmishes Amestris has been a part of since Bradley became Fuhrer. The DLD opened up directly across from the VFD)
The Three Stripes @doyouknowhowtowaltz courtesy for the name.- the original VFD owners who opened up a new bar because they didn't want to deal with Karl's bullshit. Became the NEW hot bar in Amestris for soldiers if only because it moved away from where the DLD is. They have something called Soldier Bingo. You don't want to know what happens if you win at soldier bingo.

NOAH & CATALINA
Catalina had been the longest relationship he had been in since before getting into the FBI. It was an assignment and one that he had taken seriously - perhaps too seriously. The two had been dating for the last five months and in those five months, Noah was finding it hard to see what was his job and what were his real emotions. Fellow agents told him that undercover work was difficult and while this was hardly a deep cover, considering he was using everything about himself except revealing the true intentions of seeing her in the first place, Noah had fallen for Catalina in the span of their time seeing each other.
Noah had just got back from a trip out of town where he had spent the weekend deep diving into recent developments at the office. He had texted Catalina that he was on his way over and as he was walking up toward the house, he stopped when he saw her, a smile pushing his lips upward as he had his bag slung over his shoulder. "Well, hey, beautiful."

The TrustBusters (Sonny Kiss/Slim J/JeeVeS Kay/Trench) vs. Big Dan Champion/Joshua Bishop/Hyan/Kylie Paige - Slim J was hoisted up for the Bishop Bomb, but JeeVeS Kay grabbed on to Slim J's ankle and pulled him free from Bishop's grasp. Slim J and JeeVeS charged at Bishop but he back body dropped them both over the top rope and to the floor. Sonny Kiss ran at Joshua, but Sonny was soon lifted up for a Bishop Bomb and sent crashing into Slim J and JeeVeS on the outside. Trench applied the inverted full nelson on Big Dan Champion, but Champion broke the hold by driving Trench into the corner with an avalanche splash. Big Dan whipped Trench to the center of the ring where Hyan hit him with the Beauty Sleep and got the pinfall. Winners: Big Dan Champion/Joshua Bishop/Hyan/Kylie Paige
Match #2
Tumblr media
Starboy Charlie and Marcus Mathers vs. The Southern 6 (Kerry Morton and Silas Mason) - Silas Mason went for the Thrillride on Starboy Charlie, but Charlie countered with a crucifix. Mason kicked out but ate a superkick from Marcus Mathers which sent Silas tumbling to the floor where Mathers took him out with a dive. Kerry Morton tried to throw a fireball at Starboy Charlie, but Charlie saw it coming and stomped on Kerry's foot. The delay caused the fireball to erupt in Morton's own hand. Starboy Charlie hit the Gotch piledriver on Kerry Morton and covered him for a three count. Winners: Starboy Charlie and Marcus Mathers
Match #3
Tumblr media
Giant Baba Yaga and Fuego Del Sol vs. Black Generation International (Kaito Ishida and Flamita) - Fuego Del Sol tried for the tornado DDT on Flamita, but Flamita pushed Fuego off and right into a single arm tiger suplex from Kaito Ishida. Giant Baba Yaga went to break up the hold but Titus Alexander had made his way to ringside and he hooked Baba around the ankle. This distracted Baba long enough to allow Flamita to hold her at bay as Ishida got the pinfall. Winners: Black Generation International
Match #4
Tumblr media
The 37KAMIINA (Yuki Ueno/MAO/Toy Kojima) vs. folkstyle (Shaw Mason/Tim Bosby/Nic Nemeth) - Tim Bosby went for the rip cord lariat on Yuki Ueno, but Yuki Ueno countered with the WR. Nic Nemeth broke up the pin and soon after tried for the Fameasser on MAO. MAO avoided the move and when Nemeth landed in a seated position on the mat he was met by a Meteora from Toy Kojima. MAO springboarded off the top rope with a Phoenix Splash and the 2023 Trios Kingdom winners were again victorious. Winners: The 37KAMIINA
Match #5
Tumblr media
SHIMMER Tag Team Championship Tournament - Finals Stephanie Vaquer and La Catalina vs. Queen Aminata and Raychell Rose - Stephanie Vaquer tried for the package piledriver on Raychell Rose but Queen Aminata made the save with a jumping hip attack which propelled Rose forward into a rolling cradle on Vaquer who could not kick out in time. Winners and NEW SHIMMER Tag Team Champions: Queen Aminata and Raychell Rose
Match #6
Tumblr media
Coal Miner's Glove Match Eddie Kingston vs. Titus Alexander - Eddie Kingston climbed to the top rope and retrieved the coal miner's glove off a pole. On his descent Titus Alexander connected with a dropkick to Kingston's back which sent him crashing out of the ring to the apron before falling to the floor. Black Generation International made their way to ringside but referee Scarlette Donovan intercepted them and threatened to stop the match. What Scarlette didn't see was on the other side of the ring where someone hopped the railing.
Tumblr media
- Chris Hero, Kingston's long time rival, attacked Eddie on the outside. Hero connected with a big boot and removed the coal miner's glove from Eddie's hand. Hero put on the glove and went for a rolling elbow but Kingston ducked and hit an exploder suplex to Chris Hero on the floor. A dazed Kingston pulled himself into the ring where Titus quickly seized the advantage and hit the Chaos Theory on Kingston, but King kicked out at two. Chris Hero tossed the coal miner's glove to Titus Alexander who put it on. Titus went for the spinning backfist on Kingston with the glove, but Eddie ducked and countered with a backdrop driver. Kingston grabbed the coal miner's glove and put it on before drilling Titus with a Sliding D using the glove and Eddie made the cover. Winner: Eddie Kingston

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Now you're diving off Catalina--seriously
WITH THE CATALINA DIVING CLOWDER IN THE WATERS OF ISTHMUS COVE, SANTA CATALINA ISLAND, CA: Leave it to the Catalina Diving Clowder to suggest that yours truly, and my compadre Huckleberry Hound even, go diving with same on the south side of the Isthmus of Catalina Island--otherwise known as Two Harbors. And more specifically, Isthmus Cove.
Which, as the members of the Diving Clowder will tell you almost to a queen, is perhaps their single most favourite diving locale on The Magic Isle. Enchantment somehow reigning most wondrous, with the added attraction of a shipwreck in the bargain, as in the Chinese junk Ningpo, burning as it did to the water line during a 1911 movie shoot. But what makes this particular spot the Diving Clowder's favourite such, at least to hear Jayne explain it, can't exactly be put into words; it needs to be seriously experienced.
Rock reefs, kelp forests, seaweed, playful marine life, such must be in abundance at Catalina's Isthmus ... and just be thankful sharks avoided the area this particular occasion. Even Jabberjaw, if you know whom I speak of.
Somehow, "Bubbles," ever-spritzy leader of the Diving Clowder and its diving expeditions, perhaps had the best explanation in the pre-dive briefing: "The magic they speak of about Catalina also happens to be abroad underwater--and to some, it seems mysterious, almost waiting to be discovered."
"Yet," Huckleberry Hound remarked, "whoever named the Italian Gardens [a rock reef with quite the marine life on the North Side of Catalina between Two Harbors and Avalon] must have had some sort of imagination in the diving arena!"
"Though I should admit," Lola remarked, "that for years, about the only way many could see Catalina's underwater side was by way of glass-bottom boats."
"How right you are, gals," was all Huck could add, remarking on the side that he was probably on a Catalina glass-bottom excursion some years before.
"Still," "Bubbles" added, "you haven't really seen Catalina until you see a bit of its underwater side. And we can relate from experiences."
"Not to mention our videos," Jessamaine chimed in.
And you can't help but be amazed. Seriously. Even Top Cat's clowder, I understand, can't help but fall head over heels for Catalina's underwater side.

Week 5: The Deep (1977)
The film The Deep from 1977 is about an undersea adventure with a couple who become heavily involved in dangerous conflicts with treasure hunters, when they find their own treasure in a sunken World War ll cargo ship. Among the treasure they find hidden bottles and bottles of drugs still in tacked and around every corner they are followed by hunters. I found the film to be very weird, cheesy, and interesting. The film had a budget cost of $9 million to make and earned $100 million in the box office, it seemed to be a success at its time. The film was directed by Peter Yates and had other famous stars such as Jacqueline Bisset, Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, and Robert Lee Minor. The Deep was filmed in many places like Florida, Jamaica, Catalina, the Bahamas and at the end they went to film in Bermuda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the movie critics did not enjoy the film very well as much as they hopped for. In an article called Blu-ray review-The Deep (1977) by admin they say "Adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley, The Deep is a fairly plodding adventure that has moments of excitement – mainly the stunning underwater sequences – but never quite gets a momentum going like that other movie based on a Benchley book. Everyone gives good performances and takes the whole thing seriously – including Robert Shaw, despite his character Romer Treece going deep sea diving whilst wearing a shirt and khaki shorts and looking like your granddad dressed in his Sunday afternoon casuals – and whilst you can’t really complain about the quality of the production there is a little too much plot going on, with numerous shady characters coming in and out of the picture and various double-crosses going on, that the 124-minute running time feels a lot longer than it is. Still, it could have been the full three-hour TV cut…". (admin) They also say "The Deep was clearly a film that got made thanks to the success of Jaws and you get the feeling that, at that time, Peter Benchley could have written down what he did on his holidays, throw in a shark or two, get Robert Shaw to star in it and BOOM! – we have a hit! Get past the Jaws connections and The Deep is a good, but not great, underwater adventure with fleeting moments of excitement to keep you invested." "Nevertheless, it is solid, if unremarkable, Sunday afternoon entertainment that you could put on after the umpteenth repeat of Thunderball on ITV2 if you’re in the mood for more sharks, coral reefs and shady criminal dramas (and it has a better theme tune)." (admin)
After watching the film myself I would have to agree with them on it being an ok film to watch, it was beautiful but definitely to many things going on at once and many people popping in and out.
A historical event I found that happened in the same year as the film came out (1977) was a plane crash that happened in the Canary Islands. "On the 27th of March of this year one of the World’s Worst Air Disasters in history occurred. Two jumbo jets collided on the airport runway killing 583 people." (Guy Facts) Another historical event I found from 1977 was Elvis Presley performed his last concert before he died just at the age of 42.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film to me felt very cheesy, to long, and funny. There was a lot of silly mistake you could see in the background or it would be in your face noticeable. It had some funny dialogue shared along with the characters and was very strange too. A scenes that really stood out to me was when David and Romer when back to the cargo ship to find more drugs, David leaves to another room, where he is greeted by a Eel. The crew did a wonderful job with the under water scenes and taking full control what what to capture.
youtube
Its not the best quality video but if you do watch the film it beautiful.
I believe the movie was felt unconventional and conventional because of the small budget they had, I had a hard time understanding the plot and the characters and it went on for to long running at 2 hours and 4 minutes. They had a lot going on from weird fight scenes to rituals? They did have popular actors, and they had Peter Benchley screenplay and write the story. I think this film is a hit or miss for most people.
youtube
One textual evidence I wanted to share was the opening to the film and how beautiful it was.
The other textual evidence I wanted to share was a long fighting scene and them blowing up the shipwreck.
