ChristmAUs 2023: The Image: The Game

This year's ChristmAUs 2023 trailer released a few days ago, and it's going to be a fangame releasing this year! In a departure from the Undertale/Deltarune style, this fangame is being done in a Gameboy Color esque aesthetic to bring its own flavor to the table.

Poppy Buys Milk is still being worked on, mind, this is simply a smaller project I felt like taking on.

Submissions for the fangame aren't yet officially open, but there is a Discord to discuss submissions! I'll be implementing accepted submissions into the game in livestreams.

Monarch's Birthday: Pages Unveiled

For those who hadn't been paying attention, on Monarch Chara's birthday, I released a giant loredump of Monarch and Poppy's relationship explained through the lens of Poppy. It was about 14 pages of dense text with pictures.

But despite me signaling to look into the memories, I've noticed not many people couldn't figure out there were extra pages beyond the first one. I hid them in plain sight, but a lot of people don't care to read beyond the surface level.

So, just to make sure we're all going to be in the same page, here are all of the pages linked. Not in chronological order, mind. That'd be too easy.

I plan on doing something like this for future events. I love writing characters talking.

Old Friends

(Fair warning! This is later on in an established series - start here if you don’t wanna be spoiled.)

The process of aging can be a pain in the ass for everyone.

For some people, it’s the joint pain. The constant ache at the junctures of your body, of which there are many, is a constant tax that saps energy and exacerbates the crochetiness that can accompany the achievement of an old age.

For others, it’s the change in environment. Things alter over time enough that one day, you wake up and nothing’s the same as when you were younger. The change of the actual world around you, and the reminder that your youth was but a snapshot in time.

Undyne didn’t give a damn about any of that, as the leathery skin below her scales began to wrinkle and sag, as her cheeks began to give ways to jowls just so.

Of course, in the early morning, she saw her yellow love, her delightful Alphy laying next to her, who displayed many of the same effects of age. She was still wonderfully asleep, out like a rock after a night of keyboard-warrioring. Of course, she came to bed earlier these days - that was another effect of aging, she couldn’t pull all-nighters fighting on MewForums like she used to.

Regardless, she seemed every bit the passionate and beautiful lizard that Undyne had married over a decade ago.

But it was later that morning as Undyne pulled herself up that she found the part of getting old that she hated more than anything. Some people wake up with a cup of coffee, or tea, or a glass of cold water.

This piscine warrior woke herself every morning by going outside, to the backyard, to the worn bench-press which had a massive boulder on top. It used to be a thousand-pounder, but Undyne had reduced it to 500, at Alphys’ insistence.

Pshaw, thought the fish as she strode through the overly-tall grasses in the backyard, She worries too much! She paused as she shuffled through a patch of thick weeds, making a serious mental note to come back and cut this grass later that day. That was the good thing about Van Dohj taking over her captain’s position - she could take the day at her leisure.

She leaned back onto the bench, the old red cushion tattering in places and exposing the white fluff below. She put the grating feeling of the tattering edges out of her mind as she grasped the bottom of the boulder.

This is where age decided to interfere. She felt herself working a bit harder than normal as she brought the great round boulder towards her chest, pumping it back up and pushing through, completing one rep. She completed a second rep, a third, but by the fourth she felt something in her arms protesting.

But undyne had a bad habit of pushing her body to the limits, telling her puny muscles to shut up and DO IT. That was what had gotten her where she is. That’s what worked for her.

Except today, when the fifth rep had her arms give out, and the boulder came careening towards her chest.

For a split-second, Undyne felt a pang of fear. Not panic - never panic. She had banished that with years of training. But fear - fear was always with you, whether you wished it or not.

It’s what you do with the fear that matters, which is why Undyne managed to hurl herself left. She was mostly out of the way of the boulder.

Except for her shoulder.

And that was what Undyne hated about getting older - this puny 500 pound boulder crushed her older shoulder as she rolled over, causing her to give a hale holler for her yellower lover.

“ALPHYYY!”

At that, Alphys seemed to come to a good bit faster than normal. The yellow lizard shuffled with a quickness to the back door as her eyes laid on Undyne, growing to the size of baseballs with concern.

“Undy! UNDY! God, what happened!?” she cried as this little lizard heaved against the boulder. Partly due to some light lifting that she herself would sometimes do with Undyne, partly due to the adrenaline and partly due to the position of the petrific sphere, it fell by the wayside, revealing a deeply bruised blue shoulder.

Her lover groaned, “Something gave while I was doing a rep… managed to mostly get outta the way.”

Alphys quickly reached for something in her robe’s back pocket - a piece of magic food, a Spider Cookie she’d been saving for breakfast - but plainly, Undyne needed it more.

It provided some pain relief as Undyne’s wince eased. The lizard sighed as her eyes noted the physical betterment of her wife. “Y-you need to be more careful! We’re not getting any younger.”

Undyne spoke up, full of annoyed bitterness, “I get that! I was just trying to show aging who the BOSS was!”

Alphys shook her head, “Some things you just can’t control, honey. Getting o-old is one of those things.”

Undyne tried to push herself up, but the magic food wasn’t quite enough to perfectly heal her shoulder - she gritted her teeth and fell back, face-first, into a pile of weeds.

That is, she would have, if Alphys hadn’t been watching out for her. The yellow lizard once more darted down, reaching for her arms and catching the muscular old fish, kneeling down and cradling her. After catching her breath, Undyne nodded thankfully as Alphys propped her up, taking her by her injured shoulder as undyne used her good arm to stand.

“Damn it. I was gonna cut the grass, too, but that’s probably out of the question.” Alphys nodded as she spoke, “W-we could always pay someone to do it. Here, let’s get you inside and to the couch. You need something to drink.”

Alphys hurried to the fridge as Undyne’s head swam. She was frustrated with the idea of having to pay someone to cut her grass. Wasn’t there someone she knew who loved to take care of greenery?

Wait, of course.

As Alphys brought a yellow bottle of liquid labeled “Sportaz- Fuel for Fitness” before Undyne, she withdrew her phone. “I know just who to call!” Alphys raised a brow, “Uuuhhh, who?”

These are just things that will stay the same for every AU in Shifted Pieces.

The Six Souls

The six humans that fell before Chara and Frisk actually managed to co-exist for a while. It wasn’t until 15 years before the main story, when the incident between the ‘Asriel’ and ‘Chara’ roles occurred, that one human died and their Soul was lost, while the other five were hunted for their Souls.

Frisk, the Protagonist

Frisk will have a personality in these AUs. Furthermore, they actually have the ability to learn magic. They can gain spells from monsters in battle or by increasing their LOVE. They can increase their defense, speed, decrease monsters’ accuracy, or in the case of LOVE-based spells, increase their attack or perform a strong attack.

Increasing attack or using magic-based attacks will also hurt ghosts. However, all magic uses MP.

The Main Characters’ Attacks

All of the characters in Shifted Pieces use attacks similar to the ones they used in Undertale; Toriel and Asgore use fire attacks, with the latter including trident attacks, Sans and Papyrus use bone attacks, blue mode, and sometimes Gaster Blasters (although Papyrus is less likely to use the Blasters), Undyne uses spears and green mode, Alphys uses electricity and yellow mode, Napstablook uses tears, but also music notes sometimes, Mettaton uses electricity, mini-Mettatons, and legs, Asriel uses some fire but also weaker versions of his attacks from Undertale, and Chara uses plant attacks (based on Storyshift) and their knife (they only have one knife, no magic knives). Frisk may learn some of these spells by befriending the character in question.

More Dates!

Befriending monsters isn’t limited to the ‘Papyrus’, ‘Undyne’, and ‘Alphys’ roles; the 6 main characters (excluding those in the ‘Toriel’, ‘Asgore’, ‘Asriel’, and ‘Chara’ roles) may be befriended provided no one has been killed before then. Befriending some of them may be necessary for some neutral endings and befriending all of them is necessary for the pacifist ending. Certain dates will require friendships with other characters first.

More Fights!

In the neutral and pacifist routes, the Royal Scientist will actually fight you, as well as the Watcher. The reason for this will vary between each AU. You can also expect appearances from Bassiere von Dohj, RGs 03 & 04, and Bratty & Catty. Also, Mad Dummy will probably appear in a different place in some AUs.

Meanwhile, in genocide, you get more actual fights. Not every main character will get a fight per se, but every main character has a way to be stronger and harder to kill.

Neutral Endings

The structure of these endings is different due to being able to kill the 'Sans,' ‘Alphys,’ and ‘Napstablook’ roles (and Napstablook in general). Because the aforementioned 'Sans' role is killable, if this happens, a neutral ending phone call will simply not occur. Here’s how they’ll work:

Near-Pacifist: Kill no one and befriend everyone but don’t complete final pacifist requirements. Everyone is happy but it’s still not a perfect ending.

Aborted Pacifist: Either kill a small amount of monsters, or kill no one but don’t befriend everyone. The Underground is at peace but the main characters are unhappy.

Small-time Killer: Kill a noticeable number of monsters or a main character, but not the ‘Toriel’ role. The Underground is demanding future fallen humans be hunted down, and the ‘Toriel’ role will react accordingly.

Captain of the Guard/Royal Scientist: Kill the ‘Toriel’ role. The ‘Undyne’ and/or ‘Alphys’ role will take over, and the Underground will try to encourage them to wage war on humanity.

Hotland Celebrity: Kill the ‘Toriel’, ‘Undyne’, and ‘Alphys’ roles. The ‘Mettaton’ role will take over, and their fans will rejoice. (note: the ‘Napstablook’ role will never take over)

Snowdin Sentry: Kill the ‘Toriel’, ‘Undyne’, ‘Alphys’, and ‘Mettaton’ roles. In desperation for leadership, the Underground looks to the ‘Papyrus’ role for guidance. The ‘Sans’ role may help as well.

Dog: Kill ONLY the ‘Toriel’, ‘Papyrus’, ‘Undyne’, ‘Alphys’, and ‘Mettaton’ roles. A dog takes over. Pretty much the same as in Undertale.

Leaderless: Kill those mentioned above as well as any other monster(s) but do not complete genocide. No one takes over, and everyone is left to cower in fear in the dark.

???: Somehow complete none of the above criteria but acquire a neutral ending. Just for error-handling. Edit: Originally included Aborted Genocide ending but decided to just group it with the Leaderless ending.
