Week 6 Blog

This week I read pages 181-224 of the book “Autumn” by Karl Ove Knausgaard.

The most important sentence of this week can be found on page 224: “What is it? For it isn’t the pupils you are seeing then, not the irises nor the whites of the eyes. It is the soul, the archaic light of the soul the eyes are filled with, and to gaze into the eyes of the one you love when love is at its most powerful belongs among the highest joys.” Here’s why. This was the last thing he said in his book. He clearly wanted it to end with a strong message which he did. This quote portrays how Knausgaard cherishes the gaze of “the eyes”. He explains (in this passage) how there is so much meaning behind someone’s eyes. It tells their whole story from what they have been through to how they fought it. How someone’s eyes can shine so bright and how this is because of the light that they have within. Him talking about this and it being the last topic he touches base on in this book truly shows how much he cares for this aspect of humanity. This “love for all” is shown throughout the whole book. From him talking about the love he has for his family to the frogs on the road and to how much life has to offer.

In the section that I read this week I was dragging it out. I didn’t want to finish the book due to how good it has made me feel during the past few weeks. It has made me feel vulnerable. Others think this might be a bad thing but to me it is an amazing thing. Knausgaards’ words were deep and meaningful to the point it made me reflect on so much. In the passage called “drums” he wrote about Jazz music and how those musicians turned drumming into an art. How they are capable of turning anything into art. Now Jazz is my utmost favorite genre (even though I like to keep it under wraps) so when I was reading the passage I felt deeply connected to the book. It became my comfort book. I will definitely read this book again some time and I honestly recommend it for everyone especially if you love philosophical & poetic type of writing.

MEMORY IN PROLOGUES

I woke three times in the dark predawn. First in sorrow, then in joy, and at the last, in solitude. The tears of a bone-deep loss woke me slowly, bathing my face like the comforting touch of a damp cloth in soothing hands. The third time I woke alone, beyond the touch of love or grief. The sight of the stones was fresh in my mind. A small circle, standing stones on the crest of a steep green hill. I’ve never been afraid of ghosts. I live with them daily, after all. When I look in a mirror, my mother’s eyes look back at me; my mouth curls with the smile that lured my great-grandfather to the fate that was me. By blood and by choice, we make our ghosts; we haunt ourselves. Each ghost comes unbidden from the misty grounds of dream and silence. Our rational minds say, “No, it isn’t.” But another part, an older part, echoes always softly in the dark, “Yes, but it could be.” We come and go from mystery and, in between, we try to forget. But a breeze passing in a still room stirs my hair now and then in soft affection. I think it is my mother.

Time is a lot of the things people say that God is. There’s the always preexisting, and having no end. There’s the notion of being all powerful—because nothing can stand against time, can it? Not mountains, not armies. And time is, of course, all-healing. Give anything enough time, and everything is taken care of: all pain encompassed, all hardship erased, all loss subsumed. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Remember, man, that thou art dust; and unto dust thou shalt return. And if Time is anything akin to God, I suppose that Memory must be the Devil.
