Perfect Marriage Revenge, ep 5
This was such a good episode.
Yi Joo was terrified for Do Guk. She hasn't quite stopped to think why that is, but she a desperate advocate for him at the hospital. She pulled a doctor away from a critical patient. When Do Guk is not in his bed, she is frantically looking for him.
She finds him and we get this moment:
Tumblr media
She initiated the contact. She grabs his hand and wrist with BOTH of her hands. Yi Joo sleeps outside his door, on the sofa because she was so worried. She learns about his panic disorder from his doctor friend, whom I love and hope we see more of.
I adore how Yi Joo has won over Do Guk's family, by simply being herself. This episode had more to do with his grandmother. Yi Joo advises Tae Ja not to sully her good name and make sure she fully investigates the deal her father is making. Tae Ja helps get some information about her past and her grandfather. In the end, Tae Ja insists that Yi Joo call her grandmother. Yi Joo is so pleased about being accepted and it has nothing to do with her plans with Do Guk. As an orphan, it didn't escape her notice how the kids in the home reacted to Tae Ja or how Tae Ja reacted to them. Further, she ate with Tae Ja which is simply massive for her and shows what trust she has in Do Guk's grandmother. She has accepted his grandmother, just as much as she's accepted her.
One important thing to note - Yi Joo has never directly bad mouthed her family in front of Do Guk's. She doesn't completely ignore it but she lets her feelings be known in a different way. "I prefer not to meet with Yoo Ra", "Please do not call my mother for the wedding plans". This is in stark contrast to Yi Joo's family who trashes her in front of everyone.
As far as Yoo Ra is concerned, I'd say this is less her villain era and more her acting like her authentic self. She was always a villain, but masked it somewhat as her mother always had her back. She's simply not hiding it now since her mother is not getting her what she wants. I suspected that Yoo Ra and Junk Wook (note: Junk Wook was a typo that I have decided deserves to remain) would team up and it's looking like that will happen.
Jung Wook miscalculated with Yi Joo and she does not rise to his bait. She's not here to play his games or for his attempts to manipulate her. He also proves her point, when Do Guk shows up and Jung Wook admits that he told Do Guk about the meeting.
You know, I'm not mad Do Guk calling Yi Joo out and reinforcing the boundary that she's laid. She did meet with Jung Wook to find out more to help Do Guk. She knows that his brother is the reason he hates being home, cannot sleet and has panic attacks. But by doing this she has crossed a line that she imposed (separate lives). Do Guk is not unwilling to tell her but he warns her it will entangle them further and it will become more and more real. He knows she's not there yet and Yi Joo proves it by pushing him away. Do Guk is so disappointed and he has to draw another line in asking her not to touch him. It's a bit of self preservation.
Se Hyeok proves again how ugly a person he is. "how could you do this to meeeee?" he whines. Doesn't acknowledge WHY he was dumped and it's all about him. He basically says he hates her and hopes she'll be miserable. I appreciate how outside of making Se Hyeok keep his distance, Do Guk allow Yi Joo to control what she wants to do or say. It's only at the end that he says anything. For Yi Joo, I think she understands there's an element of truth to what Se Hyeok is saying (she doesn't looks excited or happy). But it also reinforces her decision.
I love how Do Duk paid attention to her in her wedding dress and said she was beautiful. Contrast to Se Hyeok who could barely look at her and was like whatever.
We found out what the secret Yi Joo's grandfather was hiding - Yi Joo father is actually her bio father. And I guess that the grandfather wanted to make up for the one child who died by making sure his granddaughter was in her family home. But that home turned out to be awful and I don't know why he didn't do more when she was a child. I also don't know how Yi Joo's mom knows the truth about Yi Joo's parentage. She's also clearly poisoning her husband. She was probably poisoning Yi Joo as well, but Yi Joo knew better and did not take the pills. It wouldn't surprise me if the mother had something to do with the grandfather being in the home.
Stray thought - what if the adoptive mom killed the bio mom so she could have the bio dad?? Considering this show, it would not be that wild a theory.
Any question about Do Guk being in the other car was answered. When he saw the drawing, he near on had another panic attack and could hear the crash over and over. He was 100% in the accident and transmigrated with Yi Joo.
Yi Joo must have run out of that closet in some sort of trauma and shock only to have the police find her. Do Gok tenderly he takes care of her. He tends to the wounds on her feet, puts her to bed, does not press her for details. But because he loves her, he cannot fully leave her and "crosses the line" to comfort her by just being beside her and patting her shoulder. No one has ever cared for her like this before.
We have a bit of a time jump and it's the wedding time. I gather that things might still be a bit weird between Yi Joo and Do Guk. I think that Yi Joo is still processing the information about her parentage.
But here comes her mother, saying she's not family and taunting her to try to be happy. Which really triggers Yi Joo to the point of wanting to smash a vase of flowers over her mother's head - which I assume it is who Do Guk stops her.
I've seen some comments that say Yi Joo is too weak, or flip flops too much. I think that this might be the point where any seemingly hesitation is gone. For me, it always made sense that Yi Joo looks like she's hesitating because she's going against years of conditioning, abuse and trauma. While she does have those moments, she always picks herself up and pushes back in her own way. When her mother and ex's mom stage that little play that throws her off, she then takes down her mother's forgery ring on her own, without any help from Do Guk. When Do Guk finds Yi Joo, Yoo Ra and his mom meeting, she does not automatically leave when he says so. No, she stays to say her piece and leaves when she's ready. So whatever may have been slightly holding her back, she's done with that now.
Side note: It is just me or are Do Guk and Yi Joo staring to wear the same/similar colours/patterns?

Hey! I was thinking about something and wanted to ask: What do you think of calls for GOOD Slavic representation and Slavophobia being shoved aside (mainly by POC) as being unimportant because "you're just white and already have enough rep", when Slavs of all white people should get the rep. Slavs and Eastern Europeans are usually represented in negative ways. Some examples of movies and TV that are guilty of this other than spy movies are:
Taken and Hostel - Stereotype: "Eastern European S*x Trafficker". Taken, one of the most blatant pieces of propaganda. Basically "Big Strong Eagle Daddy American saves his Beautiful Damsel Daughter from Those Savage Barbaric Albanian Perverts", and Hostel. Hostel is "The American Men Get Tortured by Slovaks", and Slovak people called it out. Albania's government had to make signs showing how nice Albania actually looked to try and fix their bad reputation.
Orphan - Stereotype "Eastern European Killer". Esther is revealed to be Estonian, which is Baltic, which while not Slavic is still Eastern European. She's a killer in a kid's body who manipulates people and even tries to SEDUCE AN ADULT MAN. Ironically, Estonia is closer to Finnish culture than Slavic/Russian culture.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? The Tale of the Nightly Neighbors: Not really a stereotype. Also implied antisemitism too. The main characters are a brother and sister, and their new neighbours from Ukraine are sus. The sister believes them to be vampires (which turns out to be true). The problem is how she talks about Ukraine and Eastern Europe when trying to convince her brother the truth. She's like "Ukraine is around those other places. Hungary, Russia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Transylvania". The neigbours are also implied to be Jewish with the surname Braun.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch episode Date witj Destiny. This one is more subtle, and I don't think this had malicious intent as it should be noted, Harvey, one of the recurring characters and Sabrina's boyfriend, is Slovenian-American. But this episode is still kinda sus. Sabrina's dating another man at this point and he gets a business job in the Czech Republic. But Sabrina seems to have a hatred and bias against Czech people. She spends the entire episode trying to keep Josh (the man) away from Prague, she's like "oh with that guy Vojtek Kreszowski" or something, and she makes his trip their miserable. Makes the hotel staff rude, makes the room a sty, to the point where he says it's like he's a POW.
Another subtle one most people don't get. Sixteen Candles is notorious for Long Duk Dong, but a quick and often unnoticed discrimination is there too. the heroine's dad , when talking about her sister's boyfriend, says "we're glad she's not marrying an oily Bohunk". Bohunk is an offensive term for a Hungarian person, so he hates Hungarians, and the boyfriend is Hungarian-American.
Or they get erased (like the new MH G3, despite what people say "Draculaura's still Romanian" when it's clear she's not, "the accents were stereotypical" when Romanians and Russians didn't care, "Abbey wasn't Russian" when she was, with her family's names, as well as being okay with mixed Drac and Clawdeen but drawing the line at Abbey, or the Netflix Witcher getting rid of all the Polish influence from the original books, and even the author calling out how they handled his story and characters).
Just wanted to know what you thought of all of this, and how Slavs get called "racist" for talking about Slavophobia and why they deserve rep even when they clarify they're not trying to make POC seem less important
I think it's pretty shitty ngl. It's hard to put into words, but like....One group's representation shouldn't matter more than the other & treating them that way is not a good thing, but it seems like some people really want to push that crap. They should all have the chance to be shown on screen.
It's kinda goofy how they dismiss Slavs wanting better rep as "oh you're just white you HAVE rep already" considering how the Irish (you know, mostly fair-skinned people) weren't even considered the same as whites for a long ass while. I forgot where I saw this, but back in the 40s, there were legit signs at workplaces saying shit like "Asians/Irish/Blacks need not apply."
The Irish weren't even considered as white for a long ass time, so like, what makes these mfs think Slavs are even considered the same?

At the beginning of the project, I was set for the final pictorial result, since painting was my habit and, as a rule, the most accessible way to express my ideas. During the research, it became obvious to me that I could reveal my idea using completely different materials. With each workshop my concept has changed and while I haven't tried at least half of them, I cannot foresee at what stage of change I will find myself in the last stage. Also one point I took from the drawing seminars is that I need to experiment more with different mediums. I like to paint, but I realise I don’t working in different techniques. I still stay in comfoet zone. This seminar showed me that my perfectionism is not good for developing ideas.
Last week I've been doing research on the statistical and technical side of my topic. What types of suicides, causes, national and traditional aspects of this issue. The most famous suicide victims or persons who had attempts to commit it. I have chosen at the moment only those who seemed to me consonant with my inner feelings and thoughts. I have only touched on the most famous works of art from the field of fine arts, cinema, literature, and I definitely need to expand my search.
Study of the topic of suicide in cinema:
Tumblr media
This selection of films included 3 works by Kim Ki-duk. The work of this man affected me from my youth and I consider him one of the greatest director and artist in the fullest sense of these words.
Searching in sculpture, ceramics, installation art, and a more advanced search in the areas already listed above that I started, is my goal for the near future. I have identified several workshops that I simply need to implement my idea.

Look. It's late, and I'm too Asian for this. Let's just agree Hirschfeld couldn't draw Asian subjects true to form and move on with our lives. She also has a Sardi's, but like all the women who have had one for decades, it's a bitch to find online, so again, check back in three-to-five business days.

For Want of Common Sense
Chapter 10 Summary:
Wato finds Workaholic and they plan their next move. Except that Wato needs to make sure Workaholic doesn't do anything stupid first.
Chapter 10: He will save them.
"Ehehehehe! How bloodthirsty you all are tonight ~ Your Grace shall follow your wishes, as must all great leaders. Let the hunt begin! Hehehehehe~"
Wato glared up at where the Duke's voice emerged from the walls. Unsurprisingly, his guess had been right. Well, that shouldn't be much of an issue since he was already close to where Workaholic should be.
Workaholic straining against his cuffs, blood dripping down his arms from his struggles. A shimmer in the air followed by a spray of blood painting the walls. Then another and another and...
Wato stumbled as Denouement flashed in front of his eyes, the pain that followed forcing him to use the wall for a moment. Shit! Shit! Shit! He had to hurry! He couldn't be too far if Denouement had been activated.
And he wasn't.
Two corners later, Wato emerged into the larger room, seeing Workaholic standing with his hands cuffed far above his head. Blood was already dripping from where the cuffs had cut into his wrists. "Workaholic!" He moved without hesitation, diving in between Workaholic and the invisible SPX swinging down at the detective.
The blade struck against the cuffs he was holding in his hand, pushing him back until he bumped into Workaholic. "Your right!" Wato didn't hesitate, shoving the blade away as he jumped to his right, giving Workaholic the space to kick the SPX away. Wato used the moment to press his paperclip into Workaholic's hand so he could free himself while he held off the coming SPXs.
Thankfully, Workaholic had plenty of experience and managed to free himself quickly, coming to help Wato with the SPXs. "We can't stay here!" Wato warned as Denouement warned him of the black SPX approaching. He didn't want to reveal his sabotage unless they needed to.
Workaholic nodded, following Wato without hesitation as they booked it into a passage. As they rounded a corner, Workaholic stopped, drawing Wato's attention. "Workaholic?" The man didn't answer, focusing on manipulating something on the wall. It became clear why he'd stopped when the wall shifted, closing the passage and preventing the SPXs from following them.
With the immediate danger gone, Workaholic slumped down.
"Workaholic!" Wato hurried over to his side.
"I'm... I'm alright." Workaholic said after a moment, his voice trembling slightly.
Wato carefully took his wrists, quickly ripping some bandages to wrap them up as well as he could. As much as he wanted to give Workaholic a moment to rest, they still had to find the others. "Can you keep going?"
"Yes." Workaholic got back to his feet, pale and clearly exhausted but determined. "Thank you for saving me, Incompetent." He looked around for a moment before motioning for Wato to follow him. "We should be able to move freely for a bit. Do you know where the others are?"
Wato shook his head, sharing his best guess of what was going on with the more experienced detective. Now that he had a moment to breathe and someone by his side, Wato could think.
"Workaholic." The man glanced at him questioningly. "Can you get to the SP's command center?" There had to be one. A place for the SPs to watch the experiments and give commands to the SPXs, even if those commands were only turn on or off.
Workaholic gave a cautious nod. "Do you think the Duke is there?"
"No. Doleful is still in Snark."
"Doleful??" Workaholic jerked to a stop, staring at Wato in confusion. It didn't last long as Workaholic pressed a hand to his face. "It can't be.... It wasn't Renegade?"
Shit.
Wato winced, realizing that Seika probably hadn't had the time to talk with Workaholic, Posh, Gourmet, and Mystic about what he'd found in the archives. "Doleful is one of four kids who got stamped with the title of Invincible Detective by the SP researchers. Se...Ideal and I think that he's the Quartering Duke. And... We kinda pushed him into a corner to try and make him slip up."
"I...see...." The next few minutes were spent in tense silence, Wato following Workaholic through the twists and turns of the maze. Then, "Were you going to tell us?"
"Ideal was going to tell you, Posh, Gourmet and Mystic before the rescue team arrived. I guess the Duke moved first."
"We can't let him escape!" Workaholic hit the wall, his eyes growing dark with anger and desperation. "The command center is this way!" And without waiting for Wato, he burst into motion and ran.
Wato scrambled to follow him. Workaholic was fast, a lot faster than Wato despite his injuries and exhaustion. There was a manic energy about it that made Wato worry, yet they couldn't afford to slow down. It took longer than he had hoped but eventually they arrived at the center of the experiments from ten years ago.
The room was dusty, clearly having been unopened since the SP had been dismantled. Good. That meant that Doleful hadn't found this place. Workaholic headed straight towards the wall of screens to boot up the system.
As he did so, Wato took a look around the room for useful items. Underneath the thick dust, the room was surprisingly empty and, well in a manner of speaking, clean. He started testing the drawers, breaking any that were locked. Most were filled with files. Some had pictures or small stuff like a pack of gum or a keychain.
Then he found several working tasers. a few police batons, and a discarded switch knife. He took them out and moved beside Workaholic, who was rapidly switching through the grainy video feed in search of their friends. Wato left him at it as he kept looking through the last few drawers.
Bingo! Some handheld radios were tucked at the very back of a drawer by the monitoring station. Wato grabbed them and quickly checked that they were working. Since they didn't have their dPads, they needed a way to communicate as they searched the maze.
Or rather while he searched the maze.
Workaholic was in no state to be running around, no matter what he said, and would do more good as a guide. "Here." Wato handed him a radio. "I have a plan but I need you to use the old cameras to track where the SPXs are."
Workaholic blinked quickly as he turned to focus on him. He looked at the radio then at Wato. "What are you planning?" Then, after glancing at the monitors, added. "I should be the one going out there. I know the maze well enough to navigate it."
Wato shook his head, "You aren't in any shape to run around and fight the SPXs. What happens if you pass out?" Workaholic hesitated so Wato pressed his advantage. "We have to use some common sense here. The Duke is somehow streaming what's happening in the maze. I doubt he's using this old system." He waved at the old monitors. " So he's likely added a camera to the SPXs. I'm not sure how he's planning to have them find us without it being boring for those watching, but I should be able to stay safe by staying aware of where the SPXs are."
"Doleful wants to make his revenge into a show. To prove to the world how horrible this place was and destroy any trust the DA has built. I made it clear that I knew who he was, but it seems like he decided that killing everyone was the safest bet. We can't let him lose interest in us or it will put the others at risk."
"That means playing into his game until we can get to everyone. I was the original Ideal Detective," Workaholic stared at Wato in shock, "so I'll be able to survive any unplanned encounter with an SPX. Especially with these." He motioned towards the weapons. "The plan is simple. I'll draw the SPXs into a section of the maze that can be sealed off then do just that. I need you to tell me when all of the SPX have arrived within the area so I can seal it off quickly."
"That's too reckless, Incompetent!" Workaholic exclaimed. "You cannot fight against all of those SPXs on your own! There are too many!"
Wato smirked as he raised a finger, "One, I'm not going to fight them unless I have to." He raised another one. "Two, it's not reckless if I go in with a plan." He raised one last finger, "And three, I have you to help me stay safe."
"Incompetent.. I ..."
"If you want to apologize then help me save the others first. We can talk once this is over." Wato interrupted. They needed to move quickly in order to keep the Duke's attention on themselves. He glanced around for some kind of bag. "Right now, what's important is that I trust you to protect me." He shot Workaholic a smile then blinked as Workaholic took off his vest and handed it to him.
"Use my vest to make a bag." Workaholic waited until he had grabbed it before he turned back to the monitors. "And... I... I'll keep you safe."
Wato nodded, a wry smile on his face as he looked at Workaholic's bowed back. He made quick work of stuffing the weapons and radios into the make-shift bag before leaving the command room.
Yet, just as he was leaving...
"I'm sorry." Workaholic looked at the monitor where Incompetent had gathered everyone safely. They were safe. He wasn't needed anymore. Ideal and Incompetent would be fine, guiding the rest to safety. "I'm sorry but Doleful was right. My family.... I can't do this to them. They shouldn't have to suffer from my mistake.
He left the room and walked down to where the SPXs had been corralled. He didn't allow himself to hesitate as he opened the corridor and walked in. The SPXs swirled to face him.
He smiled sadly, closing his eyes as he wished his family a good future.
The walls soon dripped crimson drops.
Wato froze at the entrance, unsure how to react to the vision Denouement had shoved into his face. If he walked away now, Workaholic would kill himself. But staying here would undoubtedly result in the death of everyone else.
What could he do? What should he????
Wato turned around and made Workaholic promise to stay safe until they could talk....
Wato sends whoever he found back to Workaholic.....
Wato forgives him.....
Wato.....
......
...
..
.
"The truth about what happened on Morgue, now and ten years ago, will come out no matter what." Wato slowly said, turning around to find Workaholic snapping his head to stare at him. He met his gaze calmly, knowing what he should say, trusting that Denouement had shown him what he needed. "One way or another, your name will come out and your family will be exposed to it."
"And the best way to keep them safe is for you to survive. To be there when it happens so you can be their support. They will need you. Your wife needs you. She loves you, faults and all. Your daughter adores you. She looks up to you. It won't matter how you die to them. All that they'll know is that you died. That you're no longer there to share the good moments and the bad ones together."
"So don't die to protect them." Wato carefully said every word, not daring to do anything but his best. "Live so you can support them through the rest of their lives."
It worked.
Workaholic choked down a sob, half-collapsing on the monitor as he pressed a hand over his mouth. Wato hesitated before he approached Workaholic, not wanting to leave him alone just yet. The others would be safe for a while longer. Workaholic needed to be reminded he wasn't alone in this.
He put a hand carefully on his back, not really doing anything except keeping Soya Shizaki company at his weakest point. Workaholic made no noise after that first choked off sob, his shoulders trembling as he cried. Wato made a note to talk to Seika about getting everyone therapy.
Actually, it should probably be a requirement for all DA detectives....
A thought to explore later.
Finally, Workaholic collected himself, looking extremely pale yet somehow more energetic. He straightened, brushing away the last traces of his tears from his eyes as he looked at Wato. "You should go."
Wato waited a moment, just to see if Denouement was going to go off, relaxing slightly as it didn't. "Will you be okay?"
Workaholic nodded resolutely, "I have to survive for my family, right?" Wato nodded, "Then go. The others have their own families waiting for them."
This time, nothing kept Wato from leaving the room.
A/N: I made myself cry with Wato's speech to Workaholic.
Also, everyone needs a lot of therapy!

It's the penultimate day of Helsinki's annual herring market, and Helsingin Sanomat has decided to take a look at the fishing industry and its current difficulties.
Finland's fishers have been told that the herring catch must be reduced to near zero next year, in order to preserve fish stocks.
That has gone down like a lead balloon at the fish market, where the nation's herring hunters gather and sell directly to consumers from their boats in Helsinki's market square.
HS notes that domestic consumers eat only four percent of the catch, making the herring market a somewhat inaccurate representation of the industry.
A fur farm or a Baltic pickling plant would be closer to the truth, notes HS. In the 1980s Finns switched from herring to make farmed salmon the country's main fish product.
HS quotes a WWF representative as saying that Finland had long thought herring stocks were robust and could withstand the current level of fishing, but that has now led to a situation where the country's 400 or so professional fishers could be banned from fishing altogether.
Marin meet and greet
Sanna Marin has asked for the media to tone down the intense focus on her private life in recent months, but her Instagram account continues to provide a lot of material for popular stories.
Last month Marin visited Paris for a Victoria Beckham fashion show, a trip that was covered extensively in the Finnish press.
This week she gave a speech to students at UCLA, focusing on making change in the world and inspiring young people to do the same.
That prompted some coverage, including on this website, but her IG story mentioning lunch with Sharon Stone caused another round of media attention.
HJK's triumphant draw
HJK Helsinki are playing in the Uefa Conference League group stages this season, and they got their first point on Thursday evening.
A 1-1 draw with Aberdeen was a creditable result, but the Scottish papers were disappointed with Aberdeen's performance and especially with the refereeing.
A clear elbow from HJK midfielder Giorgios Kanellopolous left Aberdeen striker Duk needing treatment, and the Daily Record reports that the reaction from the Aberdeen manager Barry Robson was scathing.
"I need to be careful what I comment on but I think that tonight, with the level of player and the level of game, it has to be officiated at the correct standard," said Robson. "I didn't think the standard was right tonight. A lot of things happened tonight that weren't right."
Local paper the Press and Journal was disappointed with their side's performance.
"Facing HJK Helsinki, the team lowest in the Uefa rankings the Dons will play in Group G, at home was perceived as a must-win," said the paper's match report. "Aberdeen did enough to win and should have secured three points – but they didn’t. This was a missed opportunity for the Reds."
