If you had to give one of your side characters their own story, which would it be and why?

Hi! Thanks so much for the ask!

Funnily enough, a lot of my "side" characters are meant to be protagonists (or maybe POV character is more accurate) in other storylines. Kinslayer, Dorian, Elfy, Yi--they all have pasts and futures surrounding them that would (I hope) make for entertaining reading.

Aside from that, I'd say Desmond Walsh, the bloodborn who oversees a large territory up in the American northwest. I don't have any definite plans to write his backstory, but it'd probably be interesting. He's inspired by tales of all the Black cowboys/frontiersmen/explorers who lived and worked in the Old West. Not only did he watch a lot of what America became form, but he helped organize the supernatural community into something distinctly different than what it was used to. (I'd say his idea worked out much better in the end too.)

Imposing, muscular, sharp, scarred, and emotionless.

Who inspired your OC?

No one in particular. My OCs tend to just jump into my brain and demand attention. Braxous is a very old OC as well; over a decade old, and has gone through a lot of changes over the years, so I do not really recall what first inspired him unfortunately.

If I met your OC on the street how would they greet me?

He would not greet you. He tends to keep to the shadows and moves to get from point A to point B. Those who try and greet him tend to be ignored.

Can your OC be your best friend? Why?

Braxous is a loner and although he does have a few friends, he still keeps them at an arm's distance. He avoids getting too close to others as he doesn't want to put those he does care about in danger; either from himself or others.

OCs vs. A Cockroach Tag

Thank you for the tag, @dysthanasia-series. I'd seen this one floating around and was delighted to finally get tagged for it myself. Going to do this one for the Empty Names cast.

Rules: rate your ocs on how well they'd fare against a cockroach

Rating on a scale of 0 [abject defeat] to 10 [flawless victory]:

Lacuna: 3/10

She tries to catch the roach under a cup or similar containment vessel so she can throw it outside. Due to a combination of mediocre coordination and flinching every time the roach moves too suddenly she ends up accidentally squishing it instead. She flushes the remains, thoroughly sterilizes the impact site, and spends the rest of the day being sad about having killed it.

Ashan: N/A

He's spent more than half his life on the road in pseudo-medieval fantasy world, and that involved a lot of wandering through woods, sleeping in questionable roadside taverns, and going down into monster dungeons. And since coming back to Earth he's spent most of his night sleeping in public parks and alleyways (while levitating a foot off the ground and surrounded by a perception-filtering privacy ward). Anything smaller than a large rat that isn't actively trying to bite or sting him doesn't really phase him. Live and let live, he does not engage the cockroach.

Eris: 8/10

She successfully catches the roach under a cup or similar containment vessel and tosses it outside. Or just steps on it if she's in too much of a hurry to bother. Either way she marks on her shopping list to get replacement roach traps for the apartment the next time she's out.

Sullivan: 1/10 or 10/10 (conditional)

If he's home alone, he spends the rest of the day tearing his hair out as he meticulously stalks the roach, charting its movements, trying to figure out how and why it got into the Bridgewood Manor pocket dimension and why the cleaning and maintenance golems haven't disposed of it already. Is it someone's familiar? A cleverly disguised construct? A spy? An assassin? A message from his dearly departed wife? All of the above? Surely it couldn't possibly be just an ordinary cockroach? Could it?

With an audience however, he skips all that questioning and goes straight to producing the thinnest knife you've ever seen, skewering the roach from across the room, walking over, picking up the pinned insect, staring the most squeamish person in the room dead in the face, and then swallowing it whole.

Road: 10/10

They befriend the roach with a snack so it crawls into their hand and then they gently take it outside and find a rotting log or something to put it under.

1. What was the first part of your WIP that you created?

Apophenia was originally a short story called "Dysthanasia" I wrote for an event on Ao3. Now Dysthanasia is the name of the series overall, and the story's a novel-length rough draft in the process of being rewritten.

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the intro song be?

Something short, instrumental, and spooky but with a touch of whimsy. Gotta have that little spark of fun or it'd wind up taking itself too seriously.

3. Who are your favourite character(s) and why?

I'm in love with all of them, but I have to stand by my protagonist, Isaac. He's a squishy human nerd, with no supernatural powers to speak of, but through being resourceful and more than a little lucky manages to survive awful situations. A lot of his characterization has to do with principles and compassion, but not quite in the soft or naive way readers might expect. His enemies repeatedly try to buy or break him, punishing him every time he does what he feels is right, but Isaac remains defiant, refusing to become jaded or take the easy way out. Is he destined to become a martyr? A monster? Stay tuned.

4. What other pieces of media could share a fan base with your WIP?

I'd hope The Vampire Chronicles fans would get into it. Maybe The Witcher fans, as far as characters relying on each other in an unjust world goes? Possibly readers of Octavia Butler, whose work I enjoy. I guess anyone who likes fictional organizations and the paranormal might see the appeal.

5. What has been your biggest struggle while writing your WIP?

Juggling all the backstory and worldbuilding that influences the characters and plot. So much happens before the actual story even starts. The death of Isaac's family. Renato becoming a bloodborn and his eroding loyalty to his sire. A cataclysm that reshaped the map. I'm doing my best to make these come through the text without hitting the reader with a wall of exposition.

6. Are there any animals in your story?

Living and undead! There's Renato's beloved goldfish, Tesoro. The elk, coyote, and bear Motley transforms into. Likewise the species of sharks that some of the good people of Eureka, Nevada can turn into. Or the livestock they raise, mainly sheep, goats, and chickens.

7. How do your characters get around?

Electric cars, horses, trains, or by turning into a much quicker animal.

8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?

I think I'm almost halfway through the outline for the rewrite? Isaac is getting to know the supernatural locals of America's friendliest town on its loneliest road, and they him.

9. What aspects of your WIP do you think will draw people in?

Renato being a hot vampire, and there being different factions to identify with will probably lure some in. Hopefully they decide to stay for the characters, emotional arcs, and end of the world too.

Age: Younger than dirt but older than most calendar systems

Affiliation: The Dark Dreamers

Strengths: Experienced, insightful, dogged

Weaknesses: Wrathful, infamous, burdened by a terrible fate

There's a name that all Coven agents dread to hear. A monster that other monsters check under their beds for: Kinslayer. The world's only class one psychic vampire is mentioned in fearful whispers, if anyone dares to speak of them at all. Few beings have the nerve, power, and experience to stand alone against them.

Yet this terror of the supernatural world is on the contact list of one Renato Faria Dimas, bloodborn. When his mission at the Broken Coast goes awry, Kinslayer shows up, at his request, to lend a hand--for a price, but who even knew they had services for sale? Perhaps it's less a price and more a bond over whatever happened the night one of the Unseen Hand's members was murdered.

Or, more likely, Kinslayer has their own agenda at the coast, just like everyone else these days. Whether Renato (or the human researcher he's dragged into the whole mess, for that matter) are cogs in their plans remains to be seen.

What is one element you have always wanted to have in one of your stories world/environment but you've never found a way to fit in?

Hey, CJ! Thanks for sending the ask in.

Well, I used to have both aliens and religious figures like angels running around in the world prior to my current one. Not usually in the same story, but existing in the same universe certainly. But I set both concepts aside for a couple of reasons. One being that the cosmology involved got pretty confusing, and another that sometimes it brushed too close to real-life conspiracy theories for my liking. I decided to focus on more down-to-earth (lol) characters for Dysthanasia. I mean, even if some of them are still vampires or witches, etc. I do have lowercase "G" gods as well in my high/portal fantasy setting.

I wouldn't mind exploring themes with alien and android characters in the future, within a separate story world.
