Play It: Van Halen's "Drop Dead Legs"
Unleash your inner guitar virtuoso and master Eddie Van Halen's iconic tone on 'Drop Dead Legs.' Dive into this rock 'n' roll journey
Eddie Van Halen was known for his iconic guitar tone, and replicating his sound on a specific song like “Drop Dead Legs” can be a fun challenge for guitar enthusiasts. To get close to his tone for that song, you’ll need to focus on several key elements: Guitar: Eddie Van Halen often used a Frankenstrat-style guitar, which was a heavily modified Stratocaster. Rich's far-out designs and the emerging hair metal culture of the late '70s and early '80s helped cement the brand's place in the market. Over the years since its introduction the Warlock has become a de facto image of a heavy metal guitar.

Marchi come Jackson, Guild, Ibanez, Kramer, Charvel, Washburn divennero famosissimi e sfornavano chitarre in quantità.

Eddie isn't known for being the smartest, but he can sometimes catch up on things.
Like how you always save the best part of the food for him even though he would much rather let you have it; he could survive off of trash like a stray cat if it meant you would be eating all the delicious food but still, you were quite adamant. Or like how you would make sure to stop whatever it is that you've been busy with when he starts to speak, just so he can feel like your entire attention is on him and you're listening to him- and all those things make him feel like the luckiest guy on earth.
But realizing how fascinated his best girl was by his Sweetheart? It made him feel completely, utterly smitten.
You'd let your gaze linger; from the cherry-wood neck to the odd-shaped red body, double Humbucker magnetics known for causing the roughest of all sounds when he was on the stage of the Hideout with it. With her.
Wondering how exactly those steel strings would feel under your fingertips, pick strumming against them, making them vibrate to bring out a warm, baritone sound. Wondering if it would be easy to get a few sounds out of it, or did it take Eddie too long to learn; the thought often bringing a smile to your face because you knew Eddie would get obsessive over things he liked, and he must've practically lived with a guitar on his lap during the first months that he got it.
Out of fear, you never offered to touch it, afraid of being clumsy when you really shouldn't be, Eddie would've tolerated anything and everything as long as it came from you. But this staring contest went on for a while, a bit longer than Eddie would've guessed, so he decided to finally cease your curiosity one day when you stopped by his trailer to hang out.
The offer came as a quiet, hushed whisper so as to not startle you; you were busying yourself reading some magazine you found on his nightstand when you felt his fingers card through your hair.
"D'you wanna learn how to play guitar?" he asked, his voice as soft as it could get. Your eyes trailed up to his, neutral expression immediately taking on a lot happier one while your body, having a mind of its own, decided to nod before you could ask why.
You could practically feel the excitement radiating off of him as he got up, carefully lifting his Sweetheart from where it was hung, holding onto the neck of it tightly so as to not let it fall. It was a bit heavy, sometimes it would even numb the leg it stood on when he practiced for too long but boy, wasn't it so sweet to carry.
You sat up immediately, cross-legged on the mattress with one of Eddie's older shirts covering a not-so-generous portion of your thighs. He carefully placed the guitar on your lap, hollow part of the underside sprawled over your thigh as you timidly held onto the neck of it, to keep it in place. He bit back a smile before getting a hold of your right arm, getting it to a comfortable position where you could probably strum or pick better. He took a step back to get a better look and Christ, he swore he could jizz his pants and burst out crying at the same time if he looked at both of you any longer.
"Jesus- she looks like she was made for you," he chuckled, earning a shy nod from you as he reached for his nightstand and grabbed a thin, black guitar pick before sitting right in front of you, cross-legged just like you. "She's yours, wouldn't wanna steal her away," you hummed, the weight of the guitar feeling foreign on your lap as you wiggled a bit on your spot, exhaling through your mouth softly as you gave him your right hand again, for him to show you how to hold the pick. And to his surprise, you were quick to learn that.
"You're a natural at this," he praised, unable to hold back a giggle as he cleared his throat. "Now- those small portions? They're called frets, and all of them combined is a fretboard," he explained, fingertips against where he was explaining.
"The dots will show you where you are, for example-" his fingers slid over the fretboard. "There's a dot on the third, fifth, seventh, ninth.. You get the deal." he huffed out a breath, almost as excited as you are. "So, like this?" you slid your fingertip over the strings accordingly to the frets he showed, before pressing down at some point on the string above the rest, using your pick to strum against that string like you've seen Eddie do often.
The guitar wasn't plugged in, so the sound wasn't as loud, but Eddie still could hear the clean note and he couldn't help but coo at how wonderful the sight before him was. "You're doing better than Gareth."
You laughed at that, trying out a few other strings and frets, rather clumsily at most but Eddie swore nobody else in his band could come closer to how perfectly you were playing. The teaching session went on for a few hours before you finally called quits for the day, a lazy smile adorning your lips while he spoke.
"You'll master this in like, a month," he promised, cheeks hurting from how much he was smiling. "If only you let me teach you, though. Gotta propagate my wisdom." you slowly moved the guitar off of your lap after that, Eddie immediately getting it from you to lean it against the bed on the floor, as you practically climbed on top of him, pushing him back against the bedframe with a thud -which, his thick skull didn't mind at all-.
"Yeah?" your eyes were practically glowing while he nodded, arms wrapped tight and secure around your figure before you reached in to press your lips against his, a short peck at most but he smiled against it nonetheless. "Yeah, promise. Gonna make you the most gorgeous guitarist in the entire country. You gotta promise that you won't forget about me then, though."
"I think you've overestimating your teaching abilities a bit there," you teased, burying your head on his neck as you got comfortable, eliciting a soft chuckle from him. "But don't worry, Eds. Wouldn't forget you- ever. No matter how hot Kirk Hammett is-" and with that, a tickle fight ensued, silent promises of never letting one another go exchanged through laughs.

So, I went to Guitar Center today, totally expecting to pick up one of 2 guitars... Either a Paul Reed Smith McCarty 594 Single Cut SE or an Ibanez RG 421 or RG 600. I played all three guitars. I just didn't bond with any of them. The RG 600 had HUGE issues, the RG 421 was meh at best. The PRS for it's price was not great.... it was heavy, the frets were not great, it had a lot of sharp edges, the neck was meh. I was shocked... it was $799 with a gig bag. I was underwhelmed. I continued to look around. I tried a Sterling Axis (the import version of the Ernie Ball Axis originally designed for/with Eddie Van Halen). I just didn't groove with it.
Then, I remembered one of my favorite gear YouTuber's recommending Schecter guitars. I found one on the wall that was on clearance for nearly 1/3 the original retail. It was throwing off serious Randy Rhoads vibes (one of my top 5 favorite guitarists of all time). I took it off the wall and started playing it. Then I plugged it in an amp similar to what I have at home. OMFS Instant bliss. I instantly fell in love with it. The more I played it, the more I liked it. It is essentially a Gibson Les Paul, although it has a bit of a double cut. It has dual humbuckers and a three way toggle just like a Les Paul. It has neck through body, again like a Les Paul. It has 2 volume and one tone knob. The tone knob is a coil tap. It plays amazing. It looks amazing. It feels amazing. At some point I may have a professional setup done, but right now, it is perfect for me.
The frets feel great, it plays amazing, it makes me want to play it. It sounds incredible. Clean, dirty, massive distortion, it doesn't matter. It sounds great across the board. Am i gushing? Hells yes!!! It is a Schecter Tempest Custom in Vintage White.

EVH has updated its MIJ Series with the Signature Wolfgang electric guitar – a model that finds itself between the premium USA and affordable Mexican-made iterations of the Wolfgang template.
youtube
But this version of Eddie Van Halen's signature guitar is not only notable for its middle-ground price bracket and its faithful spec sheet – its Japanese origins are also significant.
Japan is, after all, a country whose guitar-building exploits are closely linked with Eddie Van Halen, who throughout his career played numerous models that were built in the Fujigen factory.
Examples of Van Halen's own assortment of Japanese-built guitars include his bolt-on Flying V and lbanez destroyer, as well as an assortment of Japanese Strats.
This MIJ Wolfgang, then, takes on an even greater layer of meaning for Van Halen fans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arriving in the same classic Ivory and Stealth Black colorways found on the USA Edward Van Halen Signature, the MIJ model also features an identical basswood body with Big Leaf maple top, as well as a bolt-on quartersawn maple neck.
The neck profile, as was the case with the USA six-strings, has been crafted to Van Halen’s exacting specifications, and is complemented with a 12”-16” compound radius ebony fingerboard that flashes 22 stainless steel frets.
It’s worth noting the Stealth Black version is adorned with pearloid dot inlays, while the Ivory variant opts for pearloid block inlays.
Other direct similarities to the top-of-the-line Wolfgang include the EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo with EVH D-Tuna, R2 locking nut, heel-mount truss rod wheel and 25.5” scale length.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the electronics department, EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 bridge and Alnico 3 neck humbuckers are wired to a three-way toggle switch and a kill switch. The volume control features a low-friction pot and treble bleed circuit, while the tone knob has a high-friction pot to avoid accidental rolls.
The MIJ Wolfgangs have been a long time coming, after EVH co-runner Matt Bruck told Guitar World of the brand’s plans to reignite its Japanese links.
“Ed’s history with Japanese guitars predates Van Halen’s records,” Bruck said at the time. “He played a bolt-on Flying V and an Ibanez Destroyer during the club days, which were both built by Fujigen. People also don’t know that Ed did a lot of experiments on Japanese Strats before and after the first record.”
“We’re super-excited to do something with Fujigen and for the Japanese market. People in America and around the world will be able to access those models, too.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As mentioned above, the MIJ Signature Wolfgang sits between the $4k USA model and $750 Mexican version, and will be available for $2,699.
To find out more, head over to EVH.

My Pharoah EVH replica project is Completed...took most of the day as I worked on it since the early morning... affectionately called "The 78" in honor of The first Van Halen album and there's Eddie holding The Original... looking like he's getting ready to set The Guitar World 🌎🌍 on Fire 🔥🔥🔥 and he did just that.... My "78" has a brass nut like The Original. But where it's a little different is that I put Wilkinson EZ-Lok tuners on it...it has a Guitar Madness 1984 bridge humbucker in the bridge.... Captures some of that 80s Hard Rock sound.. Which I love...a vintage style tremelo bridge but it has roller saddles on it... Those bridges are becoming my favorite.. An Aluminum Trem Claw and a Titanium Neck plate with Titanium screws on it...strung it up with GHS Boomers...nice bright punchy sound... worked out the bugs and it sounds great and plays great... Still have to tweak on it some more to get it " Just Right"..Thank you Mr Van Halen for the inspiration... heroes walk amoung the Stars... Gone but you'll live through your Legacy... Eternal Life and Hotep from Unk-Tu-Amun The Last Pharoah.. (at Pensacola, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeHlk_5uJ6L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Well.
So uh, yeah. Things just kinda happened lately and sure enough, the guitar is now done. Er...whoops! XD
Anywho, yeah, this has been a lifelong dream of mine to own my very own EVH Frankenstrat style guitar. And for under a $1,000 no less! If I would have done anything differently, then I would change the tuning heads to locking ones as at present, it tends to lose tuning rather frequently-which can be a nuisance.
Another thing would be to replace the nut from a plastic one to something along the lines of Tusq as plastic nuts don't stay in tune all that well imo. Other than these, I am very happy!
(Because I know people are gonna be pissed off with me for not replicating it exactly like Eddie’s original, listen in and listen close. Who gives a shit! Yes, I know that it doesn't look exactly like Eddie's. That was the whole point. It was done on a budget of under $1,000 or £765. If you don't like it, then tough. It's my build so therefore I don't care what you think.)

“Bunny-slippered Phil Collen sits atop a guitar case playing his beloved 1978 Fender Stratocaster "Felix." He's in the Booterstown Band House in Dublin where Def Leppard began work on Hysteria in 1984. Felix helped define the sound of Hysteria, and Phil used it on more records than any other guitar he owns. He describes Felix as "kind of a road warrior... It would stay in tune, it reacted, it would respond. You'd turn it down it would go clean. It would just have these amazing different tones in it and others thing. So that was the thing. It was just very versatile as well." Here's more from Phil on his relationship with this very special guitar: "Well, it had a kind of a sound that you could do everything on. You know, all the Hysteria stuff like - it just had a clean Fender Strat sound. You could get it to sound like Jimi Hendrix. Or because it had a humbucker, you know, you could do all the other stuff, like you know ... Animal, you know, ... It was a really even guitar. And the intonation. That's such an important thing, you know? Especially when you're recording with Mutt. Mutt Lange. He's always saying, you know, we're going to do overdubs, so everything has to be in tune. Otherwise it just starts to get really wonky and, and, tuning wise ... So this guitar was - the intonation was perfect on it. And it's kind of rare that a guitar does that. Just kind of the whole all-around thing. I actually used it recently. It was in Joe's demos and stuff, and I, and I used it and sounds really cool. Still... Well, I have to drop a name here. So I met Eddie Van Halen, when I was rehearsing with Girl. And uh, I was playing this and Ritchie Blackmore's strap had three single coil pickups. These are actually humbuckers. They look like single coils but they're actually really humbuckers. I was saying, yeah I've got this Strat and he said, you're never going to be happy with it until you put a humbucker right there now. And I thought, well if Eddie Van Halen is telling me I should put a humbucker on my Strat, I should do that. So I did and, and then that was the sound. That was the sound I actually had in my head. And, immediately it was just like, cool. Because you had the whammy bar. You could do all this crazy stuff on that. But you also had this Humbucker and that just made all the difference. You could fly over the sun. Single coils, when you turn up that much gain on an amplifier, you really struggle with it. They howl, they don't like it. And they buzz. But with a Humbucker, it just smooths it all out, and it's just sounds raw and big and, and monstrous, you know." Black and white photo. Courtesy of the Lorelei Shellist Private Collection.”

The Frankenstrat, also known as "Frankie", is a guitar created by Eddie Van Halen.
Its name is a portmanteau of Frankenstein, the fictional doctor who created a monster by combining body parts of the recently deceased, and the Stratocaster, a model of electric guitar made by Fender.
A copy of the Frankenstrat is housed in the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
The Frankenstrat was Van Halen's attempt to combine the sound of a classic Gibson guitar with the physical attributes and tremolo bar functionality of a Fender Stratocaster, thus creating an early attempt of a Superstrat .
It was made from a Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which he modified to fit a Gibson PAF humbucking pickup in the bridge position.
The guitar has a maple neck and fretboard, chrome hardware, and was painted with a black and white striped design until arriving at its final combination of red background with black and white stripes. It has a standard six string setup and a Floyd Rose tremolo.
** - In April 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed the Frankenstrat guitar as part of the "Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock and Roll" exhibit.
Design:
Body and neck;
Van Halen bought the Frankenstrat's northern ash body and maple neck (which was a factory reject) for $130 from Wayne Charvel and Lynn Ellsworth, who sold Boogie Body bodies and necks.
Van Halen was able to purchase the factory second body at a discount price of $50 due to a knot in the wood. The $80 neck had jumbo fret wire, and its truss rod was adjustable at the heel.
Bridge and pickup;
The guitarist originally used the Fender tremolo system from his 1958 Fender Stratocaster, adding the Floyd Rose later.
He equipped the Frankenstrat with a PAF ("patent applied for") pickup removed from his Gibson ES-335, potting the pickup in paraffin wax to reduce microphonic feedback.
He then screwed the pickup to the guitar in the bridge position, slightly offset from perpendicular to the strings, to compensate for the different string spacing between the Gibson's pickup and the Fender's bridge.
This pickup was later replaced by a Seymour Duncan humbucker.
Controls;
Van Halen removed both tone-control potentiometers, wiring the pickups in a simple circuit largely due to his limited knowledge of electronics.
He placed a knob marked "Tone" on the volume-control pot, then used a vinyl record that he'd shaped into a pick guard to cover the controls.
This pick guard was later replaced by a real, similarly-shaped pick guard.
Although it has five mounting holes (one drilled by Van Halen), it was installed with only three screws.
A strip of double-sided masking tape was added near the pick guard, on which Van Halen placed a variety of picks.
The simple circuit consisted of a single humbucking pick-up, an A500k potentiometer (the volume control) and a 1/4-inch output jack.
Finish;
Van Halen painted the guitar black, and when it was dry he put strips of gaffer's tape on the body and repainted it white, creating the classic Frankenstrat.
Van Halen put a Gibson decal on the headstock, emphasizing the "cross-pollination" between Gibson and Fender.
Because companies began selling guitars with similar finishes, and because he felt that the guitar was being too badly damaged from overuse, he stopped playing the Frankenstrat in public, instead using the black-and-yellow "bumblebee" guitar pictured on Van Halen II (1979).
In 1979, disappointed with the bumblebee's performance, Van Halen re-taped the body of the Frankenstrat and painted it with red Schwinn bicycle paint.
According to the guitarist, "The Schwinn bicycle paint gives it pop."
Variants;
Kramers;
Kramer Guitars was the first company endorsed by Van Halen in 1983, when it built a Frankenstrat replica, and during this time he replaced the original Frankenstrat neck with a Kramer neck, first seen on the "Jump" video.
In 1984, he was given the "Hot for Teacher" guitar (seen in the song's video clip), and began appearing in Kramer advertisements.
Paul Unkert, the "Guitar Guy" of UNK guitars, worked on the Frankenstrat and put his "Unk" stamp on it.
The best-known Kramer owned by Van Halen was the 5150, which he built in the Kramer factory.
Although it was thought that the guitar was made from a Kramer Baretta body, it had a prototype Pacer body.
The guitar, used from the 1984 tour through the OU812 tour, was last used to record "Judgement Day" for the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991).
Although the 5150 reappeared on the 2004 reunion tour with Sammy Hagar, the guitar upgraded with a Charvel neck and EVH Wolfgang humbucker, it was subsequently retired.
A number of other Kramers were also built and used by Van Halen during this time (most notably the 1984 Kramer), although most were simply striped designs without other markings.
These guitars were primarily backups for the 5150 on tours, and were retired at the same time. Some were given away, or (like the 1984 Kramer) awarded in contests.
Charvel hybrid VH2;
The second Frankenstrat, appearing on the Van Halen II LP and tour, was a 1979 Charvel hybrid VH2 "Bumblebee" black-and-yellow striped guitar.
It was buried with Dimebag Darrell of Pantera in a Kiss Kasket, who had asked for a Charvel Art Series replica before they were released; Van Halen was said to have presented the original guitar at his funeral.

How Eddie Van Halen Made the ‘Jump’ to a New Era of Music (1955-2020)
Tumblr media
‘His playing was pure Wizardry.’- Angus Young, lead guitarist of ACDC.
‘A great loss for the World of Music.’- Scorpions.
‘We considered him an inspiration, an idol.’- Metallica.
These statements all of course refer to the recent passing of legendary musician Eddie Van Halen on October 6th. Van Halen (often regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time) formed the band ‘Van Halen,’ in 1972 with Alex Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Mark Stone, and quickly demonstrated to the world both his talent, and innovation.
Selling 80 million albums world-wide, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Van Halen demonstrated mass popularity, appealing to hard rock, and heavy metal fans in songs such as ‘Ain’t Talkin About Love,’ and pop fans alike with ‘Jump.’ Eddie Van Halen was key to this appeal. His revolutionary technique on the guitar astonished crowds, especially his signature tapping as seen in ‘Eruption,’ using the guitar in a way many had never seen.
However, Van Halen not only changed the way guitar was played, but also the guitar itself. Creating his ‘Frankenstrat,’ briefly displayed in the Met, Van Halen (like Hendrix) changed the game. Claiming ‘the guitar I wanted to play didn’t exist,’ he installed a ‘humbucker,’ from a Gibson onto a Fender Stratocaster, giving the guitar a unique sound at the time (a setup common in most Stratocasters today). Subsequently, many aspiring guitarists can ‘chase the tone,’ Van Halen once dreamed of.
Consequently, I do not think it’s an overstatement to say that despite his passing Eddie Van Halen lives on and will continue to live on as long as music beckons.
RIP Eddie Van Halen.
