There's something I can hardly wrap my head around everytime I read the book, and that's Oliver's reaction - or lack thereof - to Elio and Marzia's relationship. Only by watching the movie you could think Oliver knows next to nothing about it, but the scene in the book when he hands the phone to Elio and winks leaves me in confusion. I know they are "friends first" but theirs was the love story of both their lifetimes, how could Oliver accept that without a hint of obvious jealousy?

I feel like it’s very hard to gauge Oliver’s feelings because you see the whole thing from Elio’s perspective - especially in the book, because you don’t have the statue scene etc. After watching this film a countless amount of times, I’ve noticed things here and there that suggest Oliver’s putting up a front and is bothered by Elio and Marzia’s relationship. 

All of this is interpretation, but I’ll run through a few things that jump out at me.

1. The shoulder massage

Obviously this is known as The Gesture where Oliver wanted to show Elio he liked him, but this seems to be badly received. I think although he shows a cool demeanour, he’s a bit embarrassed and upset that Elio rejects him so obviously, so takes on the mindset of ‘I’ll just help him get what he really wants’ and invites Marzia over, literally handing Elio over to her and then leaving.

2. Chiara and the disco

We always talk about Elio being with Marzia to make Oliver jealous, but if you just put the start marker for this timeline back further, it could be Oliver being with Chiara to make Elio jealous. Still hurt by his rejection, he’s dancing so openly with Chiara to show he’s not bothered and also shows PDA towards her in front of Elio the day after Elio and Marzia nearly have sex.

3. The morning after Elio and Marzia nearly have sex

Again there’s this competitiveness between them, is there really any need for Elio to be so open about his sex life (or lack thereof) in front of his dad and Oliver? He may be doing it to play his next move in this game they’ve got going on…oh you were dancing and kissing Chiara last night? Yeah, well me and Marzia nearly had sex. He could also be doing it to show Oliver that he’s man and mature enough to do these sort of things. Oliver appears unbothered, but mocks him a few short minutes later. 

4. Just don’t play at being the good host

Holy shit, I love this scene. THE TENSION. If you want a reaction to Elio and Marzia’s relationship, this is it. Oliver kisses Chiara in front of Elio again, and Elio plays him at his own game - trying to almost promote Chiara to Oliver. This? Doesn’t go down well. Trying to get me to like her? What would be the harm in that. Honestly go back and watch this scene and the way Elio says that line. It’s like challenge accepted, bitch. I think by this point Oliver’s frustrated with the game, it bothers him that Elio’s trying to set him up with some girl when he just wants Elio. Then to support this, one of my favourite lines: just don’t play at being the good host. Hurt by Elio, he’s trying to break down bridges between them.

5. Oliver’s spot

Something I love hate to think about is the fact many times Elio thought Oliver was out with someone else, Oliver was sat in his spot thinking about Elio. Again, we don’t see this because we only have Elio’s perspective, but I think if that was shown you’d be more satisfied with Oliver’s reaction to Elio and Marzia’s relationship. They have very different approaches to it. Elio is more childish and seems to get in tantrum-like states over the whole thing, getting a taste of his own medicine with Chiara and hating it. Oliver has a much calmer approach, which fits his persona perfectly and by day tries to be Elio’s friend, helping him get his girl, but by night he’s troubled by all these things.
