Am I right in thinking that we won’t know with trade negotiations until official word comes out? Last offseason I tortured myself looking at speculation and insider info and most of it seemed way off of what happened but is that how it usually goes?

Oh yeah we won’t know until it’s close to done. There will be speculations and maybe leaks from people who have outdated info, but take everything you hear with a grain of salt until it’s one of the big guys reporting that it’s almost done—and as we saw with Rusty yesterday, that usually comes very quickly before the official announcement, and includes specifics on term and/or $$. Anything else is guesswork or someone reporting thirdhand info that isn’t relevant to the current conversations being had.

But, if you see someone like Frank Seravalli or Elliotte Friedman tweeting that they’re hearing a deal is close, keep your eyes peeled over the coming minutes/hours, because that usually means it’s all but done! Emily Kaplan sometimes gets an early drop too, but Frank has been fastest with this info for a while now (see: the Seattle draft lol).

Everything about her was predestined. First and middle names connecting her to the moon, to her family’s heritage. Aylin’s parents trained her from an early age, though ensured her safety as well. That was the way the Kaplans worked. Her parents were the light of her life, and she was the light of theirs. Having your whole life all set from birth didn’t seem so bad - in fact, it helped reassure her, let her know what she’d do with her life, and what she was meant to be.

She never had to go to school - her parents told her that if anyone asked, she was some combination of homeschooled and unschooled - and she was never happier than when she was outside, or cozied up with a pile of books next to her. It allowed her to learn however she wanted, about whatever she chose - or what her parents chose - and even if she didn’t understand some things the other kids in the library talked about, she did her best to not let it get to her.

It didn’t get to her, because she knew that she was part of a much more exciting world than they would ever be, and she delighted in it. Delighted in knowing she was going to serve a greater purpose in life - like a superhero of sorts, she supposed, even if Aylin couldn’t name a single one of them no matter how hard she thought. That sort of thing didn’t matter though - she could talk about books for hours, and she knew how to hold a dagger before her fourth birthday. She’d memorized all of her parents’ journals before the age of ten.

Still, she wasn’t to hunt until she turned sixteen. It was a time-honored tradition in her family, something that had been the case with both of her parents, and their parents before them. Practice until you were sixteen, and then, once the first full moon hit, go on the first hunt.

Aylin had spent hours choosing what she was going to wear - leggings, a new sweater, and her new gold ring that she’d gotten for her birthday. What made the hunt even better was that one of her parents’ closest friends, Ceyda, was coming along. Ceyda was someone who Aylin had admired for years, and she felt incredibly lucky to have her along.

Any luck she felt dissipated not too far into the hunt. It was a rainy day, which wouldn’t have been a problem if the wolves hadn’t been lying in wait, too. Before she was even fully able to register what was happening, she felt Ceyda grab her, but not before she saw them torn apart, and heard a scream that she could hardly register as her own.

She and Ceyda took off soon after that, grabbing only a few bags’ worth of stuff, before setting off. Aylin could still remember begging Ceyda to turn around, telling her that her parents couldn’t be dead, before finally falling asleep in the back of the car from sheer exhaustion, only to wake up and discover that what she’d thought was the worst nightmare was, in fact, her new reality.

Aylin only knew that she couldn’t even think about hunting. The very thing she’d dreamed about since she was a toddler seemed impossible, now. Thankfully, Ceyda didn’t push it, and the two of them traveled for a couple of years before finally arriving in a new town - White Crest - one that set Aylin on edge from the moment they crossed the town lines. But it was a place to stay, and Ceyda had told her it would be safe (though the frequent nightmares told her otherwise). Still, she felt a general sense of anxiety whenever she walked around the town, and on each full moon it got worse.

Hunters didn’t run. Kaplans didn’t run, but there was a part of her that wanted to beg to go on the run again, to be anywhere but here. She started college, instead - something that had never even remotely been on her mind before - and it served to ground her, somewhat, even if she felt out of place a lot of the time. But feeling out of place was better than feeling guilty, wasn’t it?

Character Facts:

Personality:  Anxious, compassionate, paranoid, guarded, obedient, meticulous, timid, gentle, angry, sheltered

Aylin has frequent, recurring nightmares of the night her parents died. In the worst ones, she looks down to see her hands covered in their blood, and Ceyda is nowhere to be found. She hasn’t told anybody about those nightmares, mostly because she worries it’s some sort of terrible premonition. 

She has a stuffed rabbit from when she was a baby that she still sleeps with. It’s rather worn down now, but it’s still one of her most prized possessions. Its left ear is especially worn down because Aylin has a habit of rubbing it between her fingers whenever she is nervous.

Once read that sour candies help with panic attacks, and so she has a store of super sour sucking candies that she keeps on her person nearly at all times, just in case. Since moving to White Crest, she’s had to use them, even as a precaution, more often than she’d like to admit.

She got her golden ring (inscribed with ‘seni seviyorum’, or, ‘i love you’ in Turkish on the inside) for her sixteenth birthday, and she hasn’t taken it off since her parents died.

She trusts Ceyda unconditionally - her word means the most to Aylin, always, and she holds them above all else.

Anon I have been thinking about a solo comic series for Pietro for years. *years*.

Cast: Pietro Maximoff, Luna Maximoff, with appearances from Wanda Maximoff, Lorna Dane, Billy Kaplan, Tommy Shepherd Erik Lehnsherr, Magda Eisenhardt (flashbacks), Remy Lebeau, Mortimer Toynbee (Toad), Fabian Cortez, Anne-Marie Cortez, Exodus, Emily Guerrero.

My longest running pitch for a series under the cut bc its long as hell

Plot: Something Wicked this Way Comes:

Pietro Maximoff's family is disappearing, one by one members of the Magnet Family go missing and no clues left behind. It's as if they simply vanished into thin air. Pietro knows someone is targeting his family and is trying to keep his daughter from being the next to vanish. The first six issues focus on Pietro realizing that his family is gone, he goes to Magneto who says something cryptic about his past finally catching up with him however he vanishes before anything else is spoken. Pietro's mission to find his sisters, nephews, and father is kicked into overdrive and he has a list of suspects, first and formost: Exodus and Fabian. Both deny they had anything to do with it but Pietro isn't convinced. He hires Remy to discreetly follow and see if he can find out more since Remy is very good at sneaking around. Meanwhile Pietro is trying to be the best single father he can to Luna since Crystal is off in space doing space stuff. He is also trying to date Emily but every date is interrupted by some hero stuff, either he or she or both of them have to run off in the middle of their dates and it's really frustrating since Pietro really likes Emily.

Pietro's recurring nightmares of losing his mother, and then the rest of his family are wearing him down as he tries to unearth what Erik meant about his past, he spends hours and hours on researching Erik's past, this series will involve Pietro discovering more about Erik and Magda and also exploring the generational trauma Pietro experiences from both sides of his history/culture. He even tries to go back to his extended Romani family, the Maximoff's extended family I mean, to discover anything more about Magda and Django's family (in this comic it would be revealed that Magda was Django's family member and that's why the High Evoluntionary adopted them to the Maximoffs, I wanted to say Magda and Django are brother and sister but the shifting timeline would not make that work since now we have too many years between the twins birth and being put into suspended state before they are sent with the Maximoffs) when he wakes up one night to find Luna in an cocoon and Fabian and Anne-Marie ambushing him. Anne-Marie assures Pietro that Luna is alive and well, and that it is just her mutant gene finally activating, Fabian explains how valuable Luna is now that she is proven to actually be a mutant, and how they have been waiting for this moment. They want to raise the Acolytes again with Luna as it's figurehead, they want to be the power behind the throne and use their new followers to finally bring mutant kind into a human mutant war. Anne-Marie wants to teach Luna how to use her powers without it hurting her since recently her powers have grown stronger. Using her mind control ability she makes Pietro race around the world to tire him out while they make their escape. (to add since Krakoa is a thing now when it wasn't before in my plots, basically the Cortez Twins got sick of Krakoa and left after Anne-Marie is resurrected).

Pietro breaks free of the mind control to race back home to find no one there, as he drops to his knees in despair, *cue angst moment here as he fears for the life of his daughter* Toad arrives to beg for Pietro's aid. Something is hunting him and he can't escape it, he calls upon an old favor that Pietro owes him, because Toad had saved the Twins lives during one of their adventures after they left the brotherhood together and traveled. Pietro agrees to help him only if Toad agrees to schmooze up to the Cortez Twins to help Pietro save his daughter. As Remy catches Pietro up on what he has learned, Pietro, Remy, Emily, and Toad have to find and save Luna before she disappears too, and the figure out Toad is being hunted by the same person because he knows something from Erik's past. The major villain of the series would be a new character who has been capturing everyone, and it would be someone from Erik's past, I still haven't decided if it should be a red skull type of villain but with powers or someone else. Anyways, plot plot more plot, basically the summary of the series would be about family, dark kept family secrets, Pietro saving his family even if it's at the cost of himself (he lives, it's fine) and lots of family and character moments. It would be a type of action/mystery drama.

Oh and Luna gets Moth wings as her x gene mutation since she already has inhuman powers. The retcon is undone in the first comic. I would want this series to run for at least 30 - 60 issues to wrap up this whole plot, (Though I would be LUCKY if I got 12 issues :/) and there would be all kinds of smaller villains Pietro faces, as well as Exodus coming back to cause chaos. Some more original characters to serve as Pietro's rogue gallery.

ok i have calmed down mostly, here is the link to the video & write-up/article emily kaplan did on eichs’ return to buffalo + ~the narrative~ of it all

i’ve plucked some key parts for myself:

it opens with him hoping that despite the rough end buffalo fans will be kind in their reception at the game tomorrow

i was really struck on the timeline of it all in the sense of — he’s been dealing with his nagging neck/spine issue Since 2017. if they’d adjusted his maintenance plan sooner vs if he’d gone with buffalo’s surgery preference vs if they’d let him get the replacement vs if he’d gotten traded sooner. we’re in march and we’re still discussing if jack is the jack we saw before the injury, at least in terms of on-ice ‘product’. (he’s obvs not the same as a physical human or for the mental experience he has been through) there seems to be little doubt that he will get there again, but consider what this full season of healthy eichs would’ve been, with the sabres or with vgk. this is gonna sound hyperbolic but i’m also way passed sounding normal about eichs — jack is the type of individual player who can shift the landscape of the nhl, not just bc of how he speaks and acts or bc he made a very big and defiant decision on his medical autonomy. because of the way he plays, because of what he does on the ice. and timelines where he is more or less on the docket means the entire nhl could be having an entirely different season right now.

these bits are for me to emphasize the impact of jack choosing his surgery. we as the public do not have official confirmation but it has been heavily implied that not just jack’s successful recovery but also the extremely public and negatively impactful way things ran down in buffalo made it significantly easier for tyler johnson to get his surgery. i’m also just struck by the fact that, even knowing that ppl can often write jack off as egotistical, he clearly states that he is very aware and hopes his ordeal changes things for players in the future. now i just hope (and i honestly kind of expect it) that this will be brought up in the next cba.

You know what? This one has exceeded my research capacities.

Last night I found the youtube video in which Steve Dangle says a particular phrase in under five clicks by being pretty sure of the month—but not which of the last four years—it was in. I found the archived originals of Ovi-holding-a-Sid-shirt with three search terms (one ended up being on wikifeet.com):

I, and everyone I’ve asked, also vaguely remember him saying it more directly in a feature article somewhere. But the closest I can find now is Boeser telling ESPN's Emily Kaplan that when they first met at development camp,

I’m basking in the sheer Midwesternness of that quote.

Boeser now credits the poor impression to Pettersson not knowing English, and being “shy”. Which he probably is, and is also what everyone says about their pet before it bites you.

Petey is still routinely catty to/about Boeser. Last year he hit Boeser in the back with his very hard shot, then found Boeser on the bench to give him a hug, whispering something in his ear. The Athletic’s Thomas Drance asked if it was an apology: Petey claimed he had told Brock, “Either be in the middle, or don’t be in the way.” And although he hates talking about how good he is, he also hates talking about how good anyone else is. Jeff Paterson told TSN1040 about one week when TSN wanted other stars’ reactions to highlight reel goals from McDavid and Tkachuk. Petey was included on the list, and he did not like that. “I can tell you here and now I’ll never do it again!” JPat said. “I tried to at least get Pettersson to respond. And he just won’t! Like, he does not want to talk about other good players. He doesn’t want to give them props and their due. It sort of speaks to this competitive nature, that he doesn’t want to even give an inch to other great players.”

So we can all infer how it might have taken a minute for Pettersson to switch from “Brock=>good=>enemy=>eviscerate?” to “Brock=>may pet my tummy while I bite your hand and do the kicky kitty feet”...but for now, that’s all I can find. If anyone else has quotes, send them in!

I could be wrong but I think in the Zeo episode Scent of a Weasel when Kat and Tanya tried to get Jason to join the fashion show he told them wearing tights wasn't his thing or something like that yet in MM he wore Robin Hood, Prince from Rumpelstiltskin, and Musketeer. Of course maybe he did all 3 cause all 3 involved Kimberly.

He said he thought modelling was more of a girl thing and then did it anyway because Emily thought it was cool that Rocky was going to model. 

But I wouldn’t be surprised if he did those things for Kimberly also. At the very least, their costumes in Life’s A Masquerade seem too closely matched to be simple coincidence. Not sure about the Rumpelstiltskin play. It doesn’t seem like something he would have been interested in doing either, but maybe he had to participate in the play. If that’s the case, then were Kim, Bulk and Skull also obligated? How come the others weren’t? Maybe Principal Kaplan, an intellectual, wanted to see Kimberly and Jason do a play together in which they would end up married. Or maybe Kim volunteered and got Jason to audition with her.

YA Books You May Have Missed: April-June Edition

I did this for January-March releases (which you can see here) and I’m doing it again! I’m rounding up some YA releases that have come out between April and June. These are all books that are on my personal radar, so it’s not a fully filled out list of ALL the books, but it’s a lot of them. And as usual, I’m avoiding bestsellers and really buzzy books as much as possible.
