Naples, Texas. As anyone who knows me, I'm a sucker for the Rodeo, I'm also a lover of all things Americana and a time, some my say is long gone from our country, but not here in Texas. When the crowd rises for the National Anthem these young boys needed no adult to direct them on proper behavior. As I was shooting I saw these two and their somber tone, I made my way down to photograph them, never did they take their eye off of the flag, I got goose bumps and a chill even in 97º heat and humidity. This year I was given a dream assignment of a Photo-Essay with the subject being East Texas. For those who do not know about East Texas, well it is a most unique and shrouded region of Texas. No major cities, no sport teams, no huge corporations, nothing but small farms, small towns, rural living and a much slower way of life. The piney Woods of East Texas do not offer grand vistas , but they do offer real honest hard working people from all walks of life where church, high school football and a great taco are the staples of life. I will be posting one image from my essay everyday this month...enjoy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Uncertain. Caddo Lake has a beauty and a mystery that is different and unknowing. In my research and reading about Billy Carter, the owner of Johnson Ranch Marina and guide for more years that he knows. I just knew he was my story of the lake more than the iconic cypress trees. Billy was game for what ever my ideas were, and I got the sideways looks from him to let me know he's done it all, except for what I just ask. He was skeptical but went along with me, and when we were finished and returned safely to the marina he complimented me that in all he has done, no one had my idea and he's sure it will be a winner. It took me most of 3 days by canoe and kayak to find the few locations that I wanted to put Billy and his Go-Devil boat in. The image of Billy with the lantern is illustrative of a remark he made to me on day one about all the lost people over the years he had to find in the lake. I was in constant fear that I would get lost need him to find me before we got the opportunity to shoot.
