It was a horrible feeling to find things in your head and not know how they fitted.

The thing about Equal Rites is, it's not just a book about how girls can do anything boys can do, and the only thing trying to stop her is meanie old men. It's about how girls can do anything boys can do, I suppose, if she really must, though I* can't see why she wants to.
It's about shaking off gender essentialism, not deciding who someone can and can't be as soon as you see their newborn baby genitals, and adults not telling kids to be who they "should" be instead of who they really are... while also being really super clear that the traditionally male-dominated path isn't inherently better, it's just better paid.
It explores Granny's position of trying to hold Esk back from becoming a wizard, stemming not from thinking that girls aren't smart enough or that they should only be wives and mothers, but from a contempt for the flashy and self-important ways of wizards and belief that the more domestic and practical sphere of witchcraft is more important and better. It's a pretty accurate depiction of the way some older women enforcing gender roles think.
I suppose the book is more of a critique of the whole women's intuition/men's intelligence nonsense dichotomy, as well as a reminder not to cling too eagerly to the patriarchy's priorities in the search for equality.
Men aren't better at "jommetry" than women. But "jommetry" isn't more difficult or important than Granny Weatherwax's practical, rural skills - herbcraft, midwifery, caring for and understanding goats and bees, managing people, and so on.
Sir Terry never got on with the assembly lines of formal education, which is probably an important thing to bear in mind when reading this book.
*Granny Weatherwax

Eskarina! She ends up looking a bit like Granny, due to convergent evolution.

Esk: You've missed my BA graduation, my wedding, my MA graduation, my baby shower, my husband's funeral, my PHD graduation, not to mention every single one of my son's football matches. I am disowning you as my mother figure.
Granny, who was in a 15-year time skip: Your what?

"This is a book about magic and where it goes and perhaps more importantly where it comes from and why, although it doesn't pretend to answer all or any of these questions." & "Perhaps more importantly, the ants used all the sugar lumps they could steal to build a small sugar pyramid in one of the hollow walls, in which, with great ceremony, they entombed the mummified body of a dead queen. On the wall of one tiny hidden chamber they inscribed, in insect heiroglyphs, the true secret of longevity. They got it absolutely right and it would probably have important implications for the universe if it hadn't, next time the university flooded, been completely washed away."
Equal Rites, Terry Pratchett

I think if all those Edgar Allan Poe characters who got buried alive had just hung a sign around their neck that said “I ATEN’T DEAD” all their problems would have been solved smh

There should be a word for words that sound like things would sound like if they made a noise, he thought. The word ‘glisten’ does indeed gleam oilily, and if there ever was a word that sounded exactly the way sparks look as they creep across burned paper, or the way lights of cities would creep across the world if the whole of human civilization was crammed into one night, then you couldn’t do better than ‘coruscate’.

I finally finished Equal Rites (restarted really), and my Watsonian theory for why there weren’t any female wizards after Esk is as follows:
Some girl applicants decided that working as a maid and doing group- and self-study in the library during off-hours was preferable to interacting with wizards. All housework was done by enchanted household items until an unfortunate situation with the washroom and some minor flooding. Temporary enchantments are still used when they think they can get away with it.
A good portion of the student body is incognito. This is fairly easy to do, as wizards tend to be weedy and unathletic until reaching a certain age when they become fat and sedentary. Spells and potions for growing lush beards are traded among this group and improved upon every semester. Part of the Wizards’ Council might or might not be part of this group.
A few enterprising girls recognized the lack of a witch in Ankh-Morpork (at least one selling useful potions to the discrete customer) and jumped on filling the gap in the market. They’re officially part of the Seamstresses Guild, for legitimacy, because the client base has a lot of crossover, and to lock in a discount for fellow guild members.

Currently reading: A very battered copy of Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
This is my second Discworld book! I read Guards! Guards! last year and really liked it, but it took me a while to decide which book I wanted to read next. I eventually settled on giving the witches arc a go and I’m so glad I did because I’m LOVING it. I’ll definitely be reading Wyrd Sisters next, and then maybe The Colour of Magic while I wait for Witches Abroad to arrive in the mail.

Why was it that when she heard Granny ramble on about witchcraft she longed for the cutting magic of wizardry, but whenever she heard Treatle speak in his high-pitched voice she would fight to the death for witchcraft? She'd be both, or none at all. And the more they intended to stop her, the more she wanted it.
