And like my brother did areodynamic engineering and he always tells me interesting things and all and he told me about the plane wings slightly moving during flight and turbulence being a common and chill thing and i just enjoy those experiences now :D

LOCUST: OKAY SO my brother got me this one book for raksha bandhan (which is like a traditional festival where the sister ties a band on the brothers hand as like a symbol of protection (there's a whole story behind this it's very sweet) and the brother gives the sister a gift and money and it's like a silent vow to protect her etc) and it was titled '365 days 365 stories' or sth similar and the art was SOOO cute and there were stories and poems and some of them were silly and some were nice and it was overall very warm-feeling

My tics have evolved into self destructive behavior, but I’m afraid of seeking help.

TLDR: Been hiding my mental health problems from my friends and family all my life. Thought it’ll go away with age but instead it’s starting to affect my daily functioning and possibly health. Triggers are all around me now because I’m back home due to COVID, but I won’t be able to seek help for a while.

I bite off and swallow the skin inside of my cheek. I know that sounds gross. I know it’s not normal. But I do. I jump- well, I guess the better description would be that I jerk my legs and feet by pushing in on the ground. I don’t want to, but I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember. The childhood videos my parents have of me (~5years old) even shows little me standing among my peers on a stage during a Christmas recital, jumping. I also smash my laptop keys or my phone screen 7 times spontaneously with the side of my hand in a specific rhythm. And I repeat this until the impulses quiet down and I gain control of my body again. If I restrain and try to not do it, well... imagine that feeling that you get when you want to sneeze, or pick a scab, or cough... imagine that uncomfortable squirmy feeling at its maximum power persisting and not going away until you bite, jump, or tap. 7 times. In a rhythm your brain chemicals write for you.

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. But nobody knows it. Surprising, right? You’d think if you were next to me you’d be able to spot the tics instantly. But over the years I’ve learned to master the art of biting my tongue, pinching my stomach... basically turning to high-stress behavior that won’t be noticed by anyone else in place of these “noticeable” abnormal activities. And I highly accredit that to my old-schooled, Asian-minded parents who thought the best way to deal with their “broken” daughter was by calling her mental and threatening to send her to the hospital with the “real sick-o’s”. Yes it discouraged her from jumping up like a wack-a-mole in a group of people. She didn’t go banging on the lockers as drums at school scaring all her peers away. But they don’t know about the scabs on her body from 22 long years of suppressing the demons inside. 

I know I should seek help. Please don’t just write “you should seek some professional help” in the comments because it’s n o t that simple. The reason I tell myself that I’m not ready to seek help is due to financial reasons. But truthfully, I know I’m afraid of seeking help. Trust me.. I’ve done more than my fair share of self diagnosing and I’m pretty confident I know what’s wrong. But hearing from the medical professional... that’ll only validate that there’s truly something wrong with me. And I’m scared. I’d rather believe that I’m the dumb idiot for struggling with things no one else struggles with than have it confirmed by a credible individual that I was born imperfect. I need to be perfect, or as close to it as I can be. First born of a first gen immigrant family, went to a prestigious school, with lots of people who look up at me and at me a certain way. Deep inside I know I’m not who they think I am, and the dichotomy drives me insane.

I’m not sure how to deal with this. I thought it’ll go away as I get older, and sure, my mom doesn’t call me broken anymore (she doesn’t know issues still exist) but it’s beginning to infiltrate my every day functioning. If I sit absolutely still without doing anything for more than a minute, my mind goes insane. It’s never quiet up there.. My mind alone could probably beat the record for talking about the most random things for the longest time. I get anxious for not doing anything but at the same time get fixated on some useless time wasting activity (anything task-focused such as specific games, hitting a certain amount of likes on social media, etc) and my brain absolutely refuses to do anything else until that task or goal is met. And after that goal is met I get stressed that I wasted all that time not doing the things I needed to get done. And with the stress the tics are triggered and I sit there biting. Jumping. Tapping. Procrastination is getting out of control. I’ve survived school until now by being trapped into this loop until around 2AM, and finishing my day’s homework and studying from 2-5AM. Sleep until 8AM. Have been doing that since middle school. Pretty sure the lack of sleep killed half my brain cells. But that won’t stop me because I have no idea how else to deal with this and be a functioning human being. 

I had a mentor/friend back in college who I confided in and he was going to introduce me to a specialist he knows. I’ll seek help eventually through him, but for now I’m stuck home far from college with my parents because of COVID. I don’t want to talk with my parents about it until I get a diagnosis or something. Please don’t bash on them though! They’re amazing people but mental health is pretty foreign to them granted I’m from an area where it isn’t spoken fondly about and they didn’t know what else to do than scold me for my “wrongdoings”.

If anyone knows any supportive communities online or other resources.. I would gladly take any. I’m not depressed nor suicidal. Quite a high functioning student at a great uni admittedly. But I really wanted to get this out of my system because I have nowhere else to confide and felt like a little part of me is beginning to rot because of it. Thanks for reading! 😊

Part 1 

Summary: Y/N and Nikki have known Each other forever but haven’t seen each other since they where 12 years old. But that’s all gonna change.

Note: I should probably do a disclaimer for bad grammar, spelling mistakes. Don’t @ me I’m Dyslexic and im just having fun!

You have known Nikki since before he was Nikki. You meet Nikki when he lived in El Paso with his grandparents. You two became instant friends because you knew what it was like to be the new kid. Your dad was in the military and you had to move around a lot too. Even though you both knew you would be separated at some point you made a packed to keep in touch. So when the time came for him to leave to go live with his mom you told him to write you and one day you would meet again. Well today is that day. Nikki had invited you to come out to LA to spend some time together since it had been almost 11 years since you last saw each other. It took a full 3 letters of him convincing you to come down. He was telling you about how he was in this band called London and said you could crash if you found your own way. After a month you finally caved and called to Nikki saying you would book you flight the next day.

“Hello?” Nikki said confused as he picked up the phone. Not many people have his number and even less of them actually call.

“Hey you it’s Y/N I can’t take the harassment any longer” you laugh “I’m gonna book a flight to LA tomorrow when are you free for me to come stay?” You ask hopping he says sooner then later.

“Oh hey Y/N, Um I’m Not doing much ever except work and band rehearsal. Come whenever you have time off work.”

“I have 2 weeks off next month for my Birthday how about I come down then and we can celebrate like real Rock Stars!” You say still laughing.

“Yeah sound good! But I gotta go I have a gig tonight I’ll write to you soon okay?”

“Okay! Break a Leg Mr. Rock Star!”

“Bye Y/N” “Bye Nikki”

You hang up the phone and lay back in bed. You are actually going to do it you are flying across the country to see a guy you meet in elementary school. Nikki wasn’t a stranger by any means you have been pen pals and have been writing to each other constantly for 10 years. But this is going to be different you have both adults now and you have both changed a lot since you saw each other last. You have shared some photos with each other now and again but still the last colour photo Nikki sent was a Polaroid from almost 3 years ago before he got into a band. You have one of Londons flyers Nikki sent you in your desk but Black and white photos don’t really show you the person he is.  

The longer you lay in bed the more you feel wary about going to LA. You aren’t a big city girl at all but you promised your best friend that you would come visit and you never break you promises.

A few days later.

Just like every morning you go out to the mailbox and check to see if you have any mail. Today you did a few bills the news paper and a new letter from Nikki. Open immediately to see how his gig went.

Y/N Well the show was shit. I just got off stage and London is no more the asshole singer punched me in the face during the show and well I lost my temper and you can probably guess what happened. So unfortunately you won’t be able to come see me play. Unless I can put together another band in the next few weeks. I’m sitting in a dinner while I’m writing to you because I’m to jacked to head home quite yet. But yeah I just needed to get this out while it’s fresh I’m probably gonna drink a bit tonight and I don’t want to leave out any or the pressing details for you. Okay it’s a few hours later now and I met this kid drummer at the dinner. Guess everything is coming up Nikki. His name is Tommy and he’s only 18 years old but I have a good feeling about this kid. What am I doing calling him a kid I’m only 5years older then him. Oh Well. I’m also looking for a new guitarist too. Tommy like the one add in the paper I sent you a copy of it with the letter. I mean if I’m gonna do this the right way we might as well go big or go home. I’m also writing some new stuff for the new band so when we are auditioning people I can get what our vibe will be. Tell me what you think of this so far. You smile sitting at the dinning room table. You loved hearing about all of the weird things Nikki gets himself in to because you know you where to chicken to ever be as outrages as him. Looking in the envelope you find the ad placed in The Recycler that read: “Loud, rude and aggressive guitar player available”

That’s all you had to read before you knew that he was definitely Nikkis type. You also knew that these guys will be at the house when you go and visit knowing Nikki he will probably have them living with him if they need to he’s just that kinda guy. It was time for you to get ready for work the new job you haven’t told Nikki about. So you put the letter in your desk and headed off to the radio station.

Mortaza  Coming to Australia.

Jessie: What motivated you to come to Australia?

Mortaza: Ah, to be honest I didn't have a lot of say, in coming to Australia, because I was only like 4-5 years old so mum really wanted us to come here. Her main motivation behind us coming here was education and higher studies. She really wanted us to have the opportunity to go to university here and get a higher education and to have a future. So it was more so the potential of having a good future that motivated us to come here. 

Jessie: Yeah, and do you feel like your future would have been different if you had stayed in Afghanistan?

Mortaza: Hell yeah. Probably would have been dead.

Jessie: Wow.

Mortaza: Yeah probably to be honest, like a bomb just got dropped on Afghanistan last week, the largest bomb in the world got dropped as a test by America ... so the odds are I wouldn't have lived very long. Especially considering my dad passed away when I was really young, so having a single parent in a country like Afghanistan wouldn't result in a very high quality of life. Because women aren't allowed to work or anything like that or allowed any kind of freedoms. So it would have been really shitty. 

Jessie: Yeah, I’m sorry to hear that, about your dad passing. So, coming to Australia what do you remember being the most difficult thing about that transition?

Mortaza: Well, coming from an islamic country one thing mum always brings up still now is seeing women so overtly covered in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and everywhere else... and then seeing women so uncovered here. When I was only like 4 years old I would always be like oh my god mum look at that lady she was in such a hurry this morning she forgot to wear her pants!! Like aw poor thing and I would always comment on how undressed ladies were...

Jessie: hahaha  Mortaza: But I would also sympathise with them and be like oh no she must have been in such a hurry she forgot and then be like oh wait that one forgot as well... and I was this little 4year old confused as to why people kept forgetting to put on clothes. So that was a bit of an adjustment.

Another adjustment was, I think... getting dressed for myself as well. Mum was so happy that we were in the west, and in this society, so she put me in a suit everyday. Or she would get me dressed up in like little button ups or formal pants and formal shoes... and so just trying to dress casual and like a standard toddler was a bit of an adjustment. Growing up I always wanted to dress more “normal” as oppose to standing out or looking like a freshie. You know, not isolating myself by being dressed to colourful or too like this or too like that.

Jessie: What do you think the importance of dressing more formal was? Even though you had come to Australia, was that of cultural importance?

Mortaza: Well, mum has a very educated background so Afghans in general are very tribal and old-school and they are very indigenous in the way that they interact with the world. Jessie: How so?

Mortaza: Like a lot of afghans they don't live in urbanised spaces, they live like nomadic people. So they just wander around all the time. Since mum had more of the capital city upbringing she really wanted her kids to be assimilated with that whole idea as well.  Being dressed formal I remember everyone used to approach me and be like oh my gosh look at this little boss, what a little boss... and I would be like why are they calling me a boss? what does that mean? and I would get offended and upset and  I would be like look you are making me look like a joke and I would take it out on my mum, I would be like look you are making me a clown. Jessie: Hahaha, were you 5? Toddler is like 2 for me Mortaza: hahaha yeah I was like 4 years old - 5 years old. I think a toddler is like 6-7

Jessie: Haha sounds weird to me to look at it like that... “when I was a toddler” but you were actually 12.  Mortaza: Hahaha yeah this happened last week actually. (laughs) Mum still puts me in suits what are you talking about! But yeah I used to find it weird when people called me a little boss ... I was like what does that mean?

Jessie: yeah, because that was your ‘normal’. So, did you speak English in Afghanistan or did you learn it in Australia ?

Mortaza: Umm... I spoke a little bit. Like a bit broken. Because mum and dad used to pay to send my brother and sister to an English college back when we were overseas before we came here, so they knew a few words so then they would speak to me as well. And I guess I would watch cartoons, like Tom and Jerry .. I don't think there was a lot of speaking in that but from time to time they would have a few words exchanged. So I knew a little bit. But I was okay with school, I was in the top reading/ literacy/ comprehension group and  what not. Then in year 3 they realised I had been in the country for less than 5years so I was in the third grade and I was in the top reading class and they were like you haven't been to ESL (English Second Language) at all ...so they put me into ESL and then I was like the translator for the newly arrived kids. 

Jessie: Do you think that you learnt so quickly because education is so highly valued where you are from? Mortaza: Yeah education is really valued at our house so I think that’s why I would always try my best to do the best that I could. 

Jessie: What’s something that you struggled with when coming to Australia? or something that you found weird when adjusting to Australia. 

Mortaza: When we were overseas I had my best friend, my best friend was my cousin she was like a year or 2years older than me and I used to always play with her and hang out with her all the time.. and when we came they didn't come with us, they came a few years afterwards. So I remember I was really upset that I had lost my best friend and my closest friend the person I would play with all the time. That was really tough to get over as a little kid. But then I still remember .. because they came I think 2 years or so after us I was standing on the balcony and I was so excited to see her and I got her a colouring in book and she got me one as well... and we exchanged colouring in books and we were both really excited!!

Mortaza: Yeah I remember I was standing up on the balcony waving at her and she was waving back on the street it was cute.. but it was a struggle to have to adjust to not having the family that you're so accustomed to having around. 

Jessie: yeah, I can imagine. Well thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me I really appreciate it. I am proud to say, welcome to Australia.
