damnation (peek VI?)
Warning: Yes, this is a yandere thing. Gender-neutral reader.
Characters: Ortho Shroud, Idia Shroud.
Summary: When you commit a crime, you receive a punishment. This is especially true in your society. No matter the crime, your punishment is the same: banishment. But to where you will be sent in exile and how miserable will it be? No one knows, because no one has ever returned.
Note: I was looking back at previous sneak-peeks and I realized I've been kinda spoiling y'all with these. But, don't ever let it be said that I don't cherish y'all, so here you go. While I'm currently about 2/3 of the way towards completing the result (if I don't have to rewrite it or change scenes or do anything major), the sneak-peek is only about eight or nine pages. Which is still a lot when you consider that the end result will be anywhere from 42 to 45 pages. Let's hope that I continue writing at this steady pace. I will not give a date for when this is fully completed, so please don't ask! It's done when it's done.

THE LORD OF THE UNDERWORLD
Cold metal. There was a slight weight on the top of your skull, like the heft of a helmet. Carefully reaching up, your fingers touched thin cold metal, but as you tried to gingerly remove it, it failed to come off. Gentle tugs become harsh pulls, but that only serves to form an ache in your head as if you were pulling on your hair. Was it some sort of deadly contraption placed on prisoners? Was this how they wanted you to die? By crushing your skull with this thing?
“Wh– Where am I…?”
As you stumbled over your own two feet, you stopped yanking on the metal on top of your cranium. Fear took root as you took note of your surroundings, dark and unfamiliar, those same qualities as the jail cell but this was unlike any prison. There were high walls with columns of gray and silver and gold, arched ceilings that were mixes of blues and grays and blacks which almost looked like painted murals that had been smeared across the surface. The floor was freezing like cement, but it was a smooth polished dark gray. With at least two floors, the second was accessible by some wide curved stairs which lead to more of the unknown. Your voice echoed in the space, leaving you to believe you were completely alone.
Skull-crushing could still be on the list of possible ways to die. Or would your punishment be isolation? Complete solitude was known to drive people insane. It didn’t even seem like a single soul alive was here, leaving only the sound of your heavy breathing in the otherwise unsettling silence. White flowers from large vases wilted, their petals suspended gray and limp like hanged bodies.
On the floors you nearly slip and hit your head, but you manage to grab a nearby column that was as thick and sturdy as an old oak tree. That’s when you caught sight of your reflection in a nearby huge vase coated with a reflective exterior. You were staring wide-eyed at an unfamiliar figure, so odd that it took a moment to register that it was truly you.
A long black cloth with dark blue meander borders acted like a shirt or a robe, wrapping over one shoulder and extending in different directions to act like a small cloak and cover part of your legs. From your hips to your ankles covered by part of the top cloth, were a pair of black pants with more blue meander borders decorating it. They were like modern day sweatpants and an ancient palla all in one outfit, which you might’ve admired if you weren’t currently filled with confusion and dread. That metal object on your head was like a headpiece, with two long thin black protruding pieces slicked back that glowed a slight blue. Like a demon’s horns. Impossible to remove.
You resembled a demon with these horns, a devilish little imp. When your eyes adjusted, the reflective surface of the vase was painted. Painted black and browns, like the famous Athenian ceramic styles with figures of black and brick red. Except, each vase depicted a different scene. A powerful muscled figure standing proudly and holding a bolt of lightning; a baby strangling two large snakes; a young scrawny man training beside a satyr and a pegasus.
“Get– these off…!”
An imp… you were an imp! Horror spread across your features, and the constant tugging to remove the metallic horn-like objects from your skull served pain stronger than a slap, to let you know that this was no dream. The judges had cast the final verdict, and as soon as you arrived you were destined to live as a miserable little creature to serve a higher being. A god.
A God of the Underworld, that wielded the deadliest of blue flames and kept all souls contained within his land of misery. A being of divinity who envied his family and others who dwelled high in the clouds of Mount Olympus, so he planned meticulously for years to lay siege to the mountain by freeing titans who would wreak havoc across the globe. Just as he sits on the throne where the God of Thunder and King of Gods once dwelled, the human son of that royal god arrived to face the dark god. That gloomy and dreary antagonistic god had three main underlings, two of which were imps he regularly abused and tormented.
Maiming, wringing their necks, burning them in blue fire, those were just some of the torture those imps faced at the hands of their master. You felt yourself fall to your knees in a heap, like a rag doll, by the overwhelming emotions weighing in your mind and the now new burden of survival on your shoulders. This was hell, literally. So caught up with this newfound revelation, that you didn’t even notice the vases become blank as if by magic, wiping the depicted scenes off their surface. Hallucinations!
These must’ve been hallucinations formed by your unstable mind–– You were especially sure of it when it felt as if the ground vanished beneath your feet and were surrounded by dark mists. The dark and elegant place you had once stood in, was gone, and you plunged into a dark pit. A small plunge, then you fell on rocky uneven earth, leading you to fall flat on your face. There was hardly any light, and the ceiling was low. But, there was a blue flame, a small glow to which you opened your eyes to.
In front of you was a young boy that looked more akin to an android. Surely, another illusion, but your certainty wavered when it blinked at you. It blinked with its wide bright yellow eyes. Its eyes were like a light, as was its hair made of what seemed like real blue flames that was like a torch in this small cave. Its body was dark and metallic, part of those metals extending over the mouth like a mask. “There you are! I was beginning to wonder if you chickened out. Are you ready to put on a show? Remember, we gotta make it believable, the hero won’t be the only one there! We gotta trick all the humans!”
“W-What…?” You watched as the android-like being opened up a hologram in front of him, and on the screen of light were various shapes and figures of numerous creatures and people alike.
Whatever this thing was, its voice became monotone for a brief few seconds as its pointer finger landed on the image of a normal young boy. “Selecting… Loading… Finalizing appearance.” In an instant, a light flashed over him and he became that little boy in the hologram. “What do you think? Pretty convincing, huh? Now, your turn!”
If you squint, it was like peering through glass, because at some angles you could still see the android. However, you had absolutely no time to question it, or the situation at hand, or what he could’ve possibly meant, because the quiet was shattered by the squeal of what sounded like a horse.
Scrambling onto your feet, you approached the thin tiny opening where light filtered in, far too small to squeeze through but just big enough to peer through. It took a few spare seconds for your eyes to adjust to the light of the outside on this cloudy day, but you could make out high rock cliffs as gray as the sky. And a white horse with wings, a pegasus, several meters away with two people. A young man in purple who looked quite ruffled and a muscular woman with auburn locks. You blanched upon recognizing the location.
The mighty hero was said to have fought his first life-threatening battle in a gorge, just like this one. It was a battle that nearly cost him his life. The human servant, obliged to serve the dark Lord of the Underworld, lured the hero to the gorge under the guise of an accident requiring urgent attention from a savior. When in actuality, the accident involved two children trapped under rubble where nearby the hydra lurked. And those two children? Were the two imps who also served the God of the Dead. One imp, you were one. And the other? Beside you now, which explained his matching metallic horns on his head. Meaning the hydra was near. Each breath you took increased in pace, on the very verge of hyperventilating––
“Help! Hurry! We can’t breathe!” The android boy cried for help, his little eyes peeking out of the same gap you were peering out of. Even his voice sounded different with whatever magic or technology he used to disguise himself. As the hero was running over and a crowd was forming a good distance away, your fellow imp looked at you and whispered in confusion, “Where’s your disguise? You can’t let her see––”
“Get me out…!! Please! Anyone! Someone!” You gasped, suddenly realizing just how small it was underneath this massive boulder. It was a miracle it hadn’t crashed down yet, killing you instantly like rock squishing an ant. But if the boulder didn’t kill you, then the hydra would. And that was what terrified you, causing you to scream for help.
The young boy’s eyes brightened up, looking a bit taken aback at your volume before he grinned. At least, he must’ve been grinning, judging by the way his eyes lit up. Pausing his very loud pleas, he whispered in amazement, “Wow, you’re really good at this acting!”
You were not acting. Especially not when help arrived in the form of the protagonist.
Instead of a man as depicted in the stories, it was a woman. A woman with innocent blue eyes and a kind voice that attempted to ease the worries of what she must’ve thought were two poor victims trapped beneath debris from a rock slide. Her eyes darted from what she saw as a regular little boy, then over to you. “It’s okay, I promise you’ll be alright.” Those eyes like the bright blue sky, softened with a hint of pity, maybe because you just looked that pitiful and on the verge of tears. Because you knew what monster would come lurking from the gorge just moments after you and the small horned being beside you are supposed to be saved.
Incredibly, with only a minimal amount of struggling, the hero heaved the boulder slowly above her head. Even though the rock was easily ten times her size, she raised it up high above her shoulders, allowing you and the boy to scamper out of the pit. Managing a charming smile despite the tons of weight she was holding, she began, “How are you holding up? Are you injured or––”
Running. You were running. There was no way you would waste even a second here, and become a victim to that three-headed beast. It sounded like the hero had shouted something as you fled, and were followed by the android boy still in disguise as he called for you to wait up. Climbing, climbing, you took what looked like a thin path on a narrow cliff’s edge until you reached a hollow cavity hidden by shadows and boulders. By then you were out of breath, heaving, the ache in the back of your legs screaming from all that climbing and your lungs burning.
However, it seemed as if your torment were far from over. As your gaze traveled up, you stilled like a deer in the headlights. There, engraved within the very surface of the rugged stone walls, was a mausoleum that appeared to be left abandoned. Its smooth columns held up ledges, and at the very mouth of the entrance was a throne of pure stone occupied by a stranger. A stranger that looked eerily similar to the android that had been your company.
A figure who sat looking quite bored upon witnessing a mortal with inhuman strength. There were no words, but just by appearance alone you knew that this was the divine god that ruled the underworld. Fire, blue fire, ran from the top of his head down his spine and over thin shoulders. He was covered from neck to toe, completely in robes of dark blues and dull grays. Long sleeves with meander patterns extended to his wrist, and even his bony fingers were pitch black either due to the fabric of a glove or it was his actual skin, you couldn’t tell. The himation, the cloth that pooled on the floor at his feet, was pinned by a brooch resembling a skull.
Chilling yellow eyes leered down at you, his blue lips pulled back slightly in a grimace to reveal unnaturally sharp teeth on his pale face. Under his judgemental gaze, you felt like a miserable little roach scuttering about underfoot. “This isn’t a theater, and you’re not Dionysus, tryhard. That was major overkill. You screamed so much I heard you loud and clear from all the way up here, pretty sure all those humans heard you.”
In the blink of an eye, the android’s disguise was gone and he floated beside you. Placing a gentle but cold metallic hand on your back, he eagerly piped up, “I think they did really good, brother!” Brother? The god, the villain of this story, was his brother? Well certainly the resemblance was there between the god and the being in the role of the imp. “Did you see the look on the hero’s face, Idia? By my estimations, the act fooled all mortal onlookers!”
Brother. But… that couldn’t be possible. Now that you were high up beside the god, Idia is what your partner in crime had called him, you were no longer so fearful of immediately becoming the hydra’s next meal. That wouldn’t happen, especially when according to the story, the lord of the underworld was the one who controlled the hydra. But now you were currently more concerned and fearful of the literal divine being sitting in front of you. The lord’s brothers were only supposed to be other gods from Mount Olympus, not a being that served him. What else was different about the story? More importantly, what would he do to you once he realized that you did not belong?
“Okay, fine. Stirring performance gets five stars from me. Definitely better than that uber cringe Oedipus play that came out a while back. Ortho, nice, you really played the cute little kid you gotta feel for, and you…” Idia directed his attention to you, and you froze in place under his gaze as he sized you up. “You actually weren’t that annoying this time. So congrats, I guess.” He added dismissively, apparently bored with this prelude as the crowd of humans down below continued to clap for the protagonist that had just saved two souls from the boulders in the gorge. Then, his gaze traveled over to the shadows, on a small cliff where a figure you hadn’t even noticed had been standing in silence. “And can’t forget you. A thumbs-up for the leading guy. Even a girl like her can’t resist you, huh, Meg? Talk about pretty privilege. It must be nice.”
Startled slightly by the new presence, you glanced over, spotting a slightly familiar face looking over the cliff. It was that man who had been accompanying the protagonist. A fairly handsome looking man with brown wavy hair, in a purple chiton and baggy loose gray pants. Again, there was that modern style mixed with ancient, making you question what time this took place in. But that question was so insignificant compared to the rest of your worries, that it would be pushed to the very back of your mind.
Looking from Meg to Idia, you compare the two faces. The God of the Underworld certainly wasn’t ugly, per say. In fact, he was ethereal in his own unique way. It was more of an acquired taste to appreciate the slight cheekbones, the aquiline nose, and the dim glow his fire blue hair provided in the dark space. He wasn’t exactly the beauty standard that could be compared to a warm summer day, but cold rainy nights could be just as beautiful.
“What are you staring at? Can you not? Seriously, don’t you know that’s rude?” The god muttered in a near sneer, his gaze unable to meet yours. In fact, he appeared to be looking anywhere but at you. Like he was nervous. But what would a god have to be nervous about? “When I leave home, I’d rather not be gawked at like some freak. I don’t need another reminder.”
Embarrassment caused your heat to creep up your neck and into your cheeks as you lowered your head swiftly in an apologetic nod. With your eyes now glued to the ground, you didn’t lift your head even an inch. It was a mercy that he didn’t appear to be a wrathful god. Cruel, perhaps, but apparently not quick to violence. If he was the hostile type, the last thing you would probably see was his calming blue fire turn an angry red before your body became nothing but ashes in the wind and your soul joining the countless in the river of the dead. In an effort to appease him so he wouldn’t believe you were staring for the wrong reasons, you began hesitantly, in a nervous tone, “I-I’m sorry–– I was staring because, well, you talk as if y-you didn’t have that specific privilege either.”
Because you kept your head down, you failed to see all three of them, Ortho, Idia, and even Meg whipped his head around to stare with their own forms of shock as you snapped your mouth shut. There was no room to question what was said and done.
“Not funny, didn’t laugh. I had no idea the role of jester was just taken up. Last I knew, we had that position available. Guess I was wrong.” He replied, unamused, and surprisingly not offended. At least he didn’t seem as if he was about to smite you for offending a god. It was jarring how lax he was, but he spoke with bitter sarcasm which actually hurt. “If I wanted a laugh, I’d probably watch you snivel and cry again, but honestly it’s way more pathetic than funny so there’s really no point in it unless I want to remind myself that there’s someone within a ten foot radius who’s giving me a run for my money in the pity department.”
“I don’t think any of you are pathetic or pitiful.” Ortho chimed in, throwing in his two cents on the matter. To which the god only glanced at. “Shall I search our records for the soul of a successful jester? I believe we may have a few that once served kings in past centuries?”
With a wave of his hand, he dismissed the motion while propping up his elbow on the armrest of the stone throne. “Nah, don’t bother, none of them are that funny anyways. It’s not worth the effort of fishing them out of the river of souls. Once we secure our win, then maybe I’ll consider it when Thalia runs out of jokes to tell.”
Thalia? Wasn’t that the name of one of the muses? Did he plan to use those divine beings as servants once he conquered Mount Olympus?
“Uh, you can scram now? I know your soul is probably drawn to the company of other mortals like pretty-boy Meg over there and that schlemiel Heraclea.” Idia scoffed, looking a bit bitter. Although, maybe that was his natural expression along with the constant gloom that seemed to permanently linger around the divine being. He rolled his eyes, murmuring the word so it sounded like an insult, “Mortals.”
“T-Then… I’ll talk to Meg.”

Late mid-century modern home built in 1980 in Alton Bay, New Hampshire has a completely unexpected interior. 3bds, 6ba, $1.45M.
Tumblr media
I never would've expected this combination modern rustic curved hallway with glass walls on both sides, that have views of the patios.
Tumblr media
This home features lots of levels, arches, glass and wood.
Tumblr media
Up here is a dining area That can accommodate much larger dining table and chairs. The ceilings in this home openings and different artistic cuts in the wood, plus beams.
Tumblr media
There is also a very different style fireplace and a built-in sideboard.
Tumblr media
An arch opens to a hall that leads to a family room at the other end.
Tumblr media
There's a similar style fireplace in here, but it's got a very high & deep hearth.
Tumblr media
All of the doorways are arches. The kitchen is sort of galley style.
Tumblr media
The is fitted into a large white custom-made structure with an exhaust hood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The home is basically empty, so it's difficult to tell what each room is, but this looks like a flex space. It has a free-standing black wood burning stove and a long sideboard under the windows.
Tumblr media
This room is so similar to the flex-space, except that it has a wood floor. It has the same wood stove and the same sideboard under the windows.
Tumblr media
It appears that all the fireplaces are the same style. This one has a wood-burning stove inside. This might be the primary bedroom. It's odd that out of 6 baths, they don't even have a photo of one.
Tumblr media
And, this bedroom also has the same fireplace with a cabinet over the mantel.
Tumblr media
These stairs go down to the ground level.
Tumblr media
Where there is a pool room.
Tumblr media
This looks like a covered deck or sun room.
Tumblr media
The real estate photos are focused more on the exterior of the property. Judging by the green water, the pool has been neglected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a fountain here.
Tumblr media
And, I'm not sure if these are firepits or planters.
Tumblr media
This is what the courtyard looks like.
Tumblr media
Such a large house has only one garage.
Tumblr media
And, there is also a modern barn on the property.
Tumblr media
The lot measures 16 acres.

You showed up at quarter to seven, double checking the address Phoenix had written down on the scrap of receipt paper.
This couldn’t be right.
The house was palatial. It was practically a plantation, if you could still call houses plantations. A sweeping iron gate out front, with a long driveway that ran straight back to an enormous white house with blue shutters and a round driveway out front.
You got out of the car, starting up the stairs. Just when you lifted your hand in a knock, the door swung open.
Phoenix stood with her hair dripping wet, a towel bunched up in her hands as she squeezed it dry. She had changed out of the overalls from earlier and now wore a pair of running shorts and a cropped t-shirt. “Olive!” she said. “You made it!”
You nodded. “Is now an OK time?”
“It’s perfect.” Phoenix slid out of the way. “Come on in.”
You stepped inside. The house was even more beautiful on the inside than the exterior, if that was possible. The foyer had a black and white tile flooring that led to a curved white staircase that hugged the left side of the room and rounded out gently on the second floor. An antique wood table sat beneath the curved staircase with the largest arrangement of flowers you had ever seen in one person’s home before.
Phoenix tracked your eyes. “It’s a lot, I know.”
“It’s fucking beautiful,” you said and her jaw dropped a little. You blushed. “Sorry, force of habit. It’s beautiful.”
She shook her head. “Doesn’t bother me, but trust me when I say some of the folks around here are a lot less welcoming than I am.”
You let out a sigh. “Tell me about it. Dr. Floyd has me on his shit list.” There you went again, cursing up a storm.
Phoenix frowned. “Bob? Really? He’s so nice.”
You cackled. “Nice? He’s been cold to me since the moment we met.”
She led you down a large main hallway which opened up at the back of the house to a large living room and kitchen. “Cold? That’s new,” she said. “What happened?”
You gave her the rundown of everything that had happened the second time you went to the clinic, including bumping into Bradley.
Natasha’s eyes lit up. “So you met Bradshaw, huh?”
You nodded.
She gave a knowing look. “He’s single,” she added.
“I’m not looking for a relationship right now.”
Phoenix opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of white wine. “And why not?”
You debated not telling her. You had made it approximately eight hours in Willow before divulging your past. But it was bound to come out anyway. And there was something about Phoenix that made you want to tell her things. Probably why she was a good bartender. You held out your left hand, the faint indentations of a ring still visible on the bare digit.
She nodded knowingly. “When did it happen?”
“Last week,” you said. “I came home from the hospital and he was already there, which was rare. Just sitting on the couch, head in his hands, and the minute I walked through the door he looked up and said it was over. I stormed out and threw the ring in the East River.”
Her mouth fell open. “You did not.”
You nodded. “Three carats, too. But I lost my shit and it was the first thing I could think to do.”
“Did he ask for it back?”
You shook your head. “No. But Peter has enough money, I don’t think it’ll make too big of a dent.” You winced and then added, “He was my attending.”
“Attending?”
“My boss,” you clarified. “He was the senior attending for fetal surgery. I was the fellow. Let’s just say that our relationship never went over well with the surgery group.”
Phoenix let out a whistle. “Hot damn, drama. I love it.”
You liked her immediately. There was something charming about the way she immediately poured you a drink even though she was off the clock, and the way her brown eyes locked on yours, like you were the only person in the room. Which you were, but that wasn’t the point. You knew that even in a room full of people, Phoenix had the ability to make it feel like she only had eyes for you.
And you needed a friend. More, now than ever.
You sighed. “Anyway, that’s why I left New York. And that is why I am definitely not ready to start dating.”
Phoenix smirked. “Honey, this is Willow. You’re going to get caught up with someone faster than sweat piling up on your upper lip in August. I mean, look at you.” Her eyes trailed over your slim skirt, tight cowl neck shell top, coiffed brown locks. “No wonder Bob was so angry with you showing up. You’re about to steal all his male patients.”
“Tell me about him,” you said, leaning both elbows on the counter. “I need to know about my competition.”
“Bob?” she asked. “I don’t know what to say. I’ve known him for years, since we were kids. All three of us: me, Bob, Bradley. He’s always been a little shy. He was the smart one. We all knew he’d follow in his daddy’s footsteps. He went to Emory for medical school, Bradshaw went to New York for law school, and I stayed here. But I always knew they’d come back.” She smiled ruefully. “Men always do.”
“Wait, Bradley went to New York?”
She nodded. “Columbia Law.”
You frowned. “How old is he?”
“Thirty one.”
You two were probably there at the same time. Him in the law school, you at the medical school.
“Bob is a good guy,” she added. “He’s a bit of a grouch. But it’s only because Dr. Robert retired and he’s been busier than ever.”
“He doesn’t seem to like me much.”
“We don’t get a lot of newcomers,” Phoenix said. “And the ones we do, most people tend not to like.”
“So I’m at an automatic disadvantage.”
“Yup.”
You sighed. “Great.”
Phoenix laughed, setting down her glass of wine. “Let me show you the guest house.”
The guest house was out back. Way out back. You couldn’t even see the main house anymore when Phoenix rounded a corner and stopped in front of a slightly dilapidated green two-story house. The front porch of the house sagged slightly and the door was a little off kilter.
Phoenix scooted up the steps and unlocked the door, holding it open. You quickly followed her inside. “It’s a little dusty, sorry about that,” she said. “And a little run down. But I think it should work.”
Inside there was a small entryway that led to a living room on one side and a bedroom on the other. Everything was covered in a thin layer of dust, and the furniture had sheets flung over it. Phoenix opened the blinds, letting light filter into the room, and put her hands on your hips.
“Ain’t much,” she said. “But it’s something.”
“I’ll take it.” What other options did you have? Besides, you liked Phoenix. She was the first and only person to be nice to you in Willow.
***
Your second day went just about as well as your first.
You showed up at the office at nine, to find it bustling with patients. A frazzled Molly sat at the front desk, hair askew.
“Where have you been?” she demanded as you walked through the door. “People been lining up this morning.” She handed you a stack of charts. “The flu.”
You grimaced. “The flu? In September?”
“When it rains it pours.”
You groaned. “Alright, give me two minutes to get a cup of coffee.”
“No time,” Molly said, steering you toward the dusty office at the front of the building. “Mr. Schwartz has been waiting for forty minutes and he’s just about the most impatient man I’ve ever met.” She turned around, faking a smile. “Mr. Schwartz? The doctor will see you now.”
A grisly looking man stood up, face pale and sweaty. You smiled delicately. “Hi, I’m Dr. James—”
He waved a hand in your face. “Don’t care, sweetheart. Gonna be sick so get out of the way.”
You winced as he barged into the exam room and unloaded his stomach in the trash. Molly scampered away as you closed the door and pulled on a pair of gloves.
The rest of the day was no better. Patient after patient sick with a mysterious flu that was going around. There was nothing you could do for them besides check their vitals, remind them to hydrate, explain proper hygiene to minimize getting other family members sick, and send them home to rest. But yet they came in droves.
By three o’clock, you had seen countless patients, and Bob’s door had never been opened. You frowned. “Where is he?” you asked Molly.
She looked up from a cup of tea. “The doctor is not in.”
You rolled your eyes. “I know that, it’s why I’m up to my elbows in puke. Where is he? When is he coming in?”
“He’s not. It’s his day off.”
“Day off?” you scoffed as the door opened and three more people shuffled into the waiting room. “Fuck,” you muttered under your breath.
“Dr. James!” Molly scolded. “This is a family town.”
“You’re right,” you said, squaring your shoulders and turning around, gesturing to the taller man slumped against the wall. “Sir? I can take you back now.”
Finally, it was dark out and you made your way back to the guest house to shower. But halfway through the shower the water ran cold and you realized you were out of shampoo.
“Fuck!” you shouted, this time not caring if anyone could hear.
At the market, you stood with sopping wet hair, staring at two bottles of Suave shampoo. So much for your Oribe hair products that were probably in the trash already back in New York. Peter never cared much for their scent.
You sighed, grabbing the green bottle.
“Didn’t think I’d have to fight someone for my favorite shampoo tonight.”
You whipped around. Bradley Bradshaw stood two feet away wearing a pair of chinos and a polo, looking way too fresh for the end of a hot Georgia day. He grinned, taking in your short denim shorts and cropped tank, wet hair and bare face.
“Long day, doc?” he asked.
You rolled your eyes. “You have no idea. I’ve got a hot tip for you. Wash your hands when you get home. Whole town has the flu.”
He nodded. “Yeah, I heard. Sounds like a bad day.”
“Understatement.”
“Then you need ice cream,” Bradley said, moving over to the freezer section. “Are you a chocolate girl?”
“Is there any other kind of girl?” you asked and he chuckled.
“Here, this should solve anything.” He waved a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked in the air.
You sighed in relief. “Thank God there’s ice cream here. I thought maybe it would be a churn your own butter kind of place.”
Bradley laughed, holding out his hand. “Here. Let me buy that for you.”
“Really?”
He nodded. “I insist. A girl shouldn’t have to buy her own ice cream at the end of a long day.”
You handed him the shampoo bottle and bottle of wine that was under one arm and he grinned, carrying them alongside the ice cream to the counter. He paid, chatting with the cashier briefly, before accepting the bag and ushering you out of the store. The hot summer air hit your skin and you felt immediately filthy again. “God, is it always this humid? Feels like I’m walking through a room filled with Jell-O.”
“Pretty much,” Bradley said. Under the glow of the street lamp, you saw no sweat on his brow. Was he even human? “Just wait until November though. Winter is perfect.”
You groaned. “Will I make it to November? Will I make it to next week even?”
“I hope so.” There was something leading in his words. “Heard you’re staying out at the Wilkes plantation.”
Wilkes. That must be Phoenix’s family name. You nodded. “Yeah. Phoenix offered me a place. It’ll do.”
“She’s a nice girl.”
“Pretty much the only friend I have,” you admitted.
Bradley flashed his bright white smile. “Looking for another?”
You squinted. “What are you getting at, Bradshaw?”
“Go on a date with me, doc,” he said.
You grabbed the plastic bag from his hand. “Or else?”
He put his hands up. “Or else nothing. I’m not threatening you, Olive. I don’t badger witnesses. Just wanted to take the pretty new doctor out for dinner sometime.”
“That sounds nice,” you said. “But I’m a mess right now. I just got out of a big relationship and it’s complicated.” You looked up. “I know that sounds like a cop out, but it’s the truth.”
“Fair enough.” Bradley fiddled with his keys. “Well, goodnight then, Olive.”
You turned, headed back to your car. “Goodnight, Bradley.”
You unlocked the car, before his voice carried across the town square. “Hey, Olive?”
Turning, you spotted Bradley with both hands in his pockets. “Yeah?”
“Messes are kind of my specialty,” he said and you laughed. “Being a lawyer and all. Just thought you should know that.”
You shook your head. “You’re trouble, aren’t you?”
He grinned. “It’s called small town charm, Olive.”
You slipped into the front seat of the car and turned it on, audibly sighing as the air conditioning wafted over your sweaty skin. Up ahead, Bradley turned the corner, disappearing down a darkened street. You leaned back against the headrest and closed your eyes.
***
Where the fuck was Bob?
It had been three days of the flu and he hadn’t bothered to show up to work. Molly was no help either.
“Call him again,” you demanded.
She gave you a sour look. “If he didn’t pick up earlier, why would he pick up now?”
You huffed, strutting away in your Jimmy Choos.
Add buying new, Willow-friendly shoes to your to-do list. Right behind kill Dr. Bob Floyd.
Finally, one the last patient emptied out of the waiting room, you grabbed your purse and keys, over Molly’s cries of protest. Your rental car barreled down Bob’s suburban street, just off the main square, skidding to a loud stop in front of his house.
It was cute. That was the first thing you noticed. The second was that his car, an old Audi sedan, was in the driveway, which meant that he was home.
You sighed, stepping out and ringing the doorbell, foot tapping in your heels. No answer. You rang it again, impatiently, straining over the edge of the door to look through the small window at the top. Ringing it one more time, you started to knock when you heard the lock unclick, the door swinging open slowly.
Bob Floyd stood in the doorway wearing a hoodie and a pair of pajama pants, his face pale, glasses sitting perfectly on his tiny button nose, hair combed back neatly. “Dr. James,” he said gruffly.
You squinted. “Where have you been? I’ve been up to my ears in vomit and ear exams and dramamine and not a fucking peep about where you were or when you were coming back. Just a constant stream of sick people.”
“You’re a doctor, Olive,” he said and his voice was more than gruff, it was scratchy. “You should be used to sick people by now.”
“Are you?” Oh fuck. “Are you sick?”
He raised an eyebrow. “What gave you that idea?”
“Hoarse voice, pale pallor, heavy clothes in the summer heat.”
“It’s like you went to medical school or something.”
You folded your arms over your chest. “Well come on, let me examine you.”
As you started to step inside, the cool air beckoning you, Bob held out a hand, only inches from your chest. You looked down and he removed it. “No thank you.”
“But you’re sick,” you countered.
“I know that,” he replied. “Do you know how I know that? I went to medical school, just like you did. I am more than qualified to take care of myself, Dr. James.”
You frowned. “I’m just trying to help.”
“I am one patient who really does not need your help,” he said. “Now if you don’t mind, I was enjoying a rather nice nap.”
You took a step back, practically frozen. In New York, such bluntness would have been standard. Expected. But in Willow, Bob’s shun felt like a dig that would never stop hurting. “Are you sure?” you asked.
His blue eyes softened a miniscule amount. If you hadn’t been watching him so closely you wouldn’t have noticed. His bottom lip dropped an inch, as if he was about to say something. But then he decided against it, mouth turned back into a fine, tight line. “Yes.”
You nodded. “OK. Just call Molly when you think you’re ready to come back and I’ll handle the patients in the meantime.”
“That is why my father hired you,” Bob said.
“Yeah. It is.” You lingered. “I, um, I guess I’ll see you around.”
You climbed down the front stairs of Bob’s ivory house, stuffing yourself back into the driver’s seat.
Why was it that you could feel the heat of his gaze burning the back of your head as you drove away? And why did it, for just a second, feel like he was about to cave when you asked if he was sure?
You were going to crack him. Buy new shoes, order hair products online, and make Bob Floyd stop hating you.
Your to-do list just kept on growing.

Shadows in the Night
This story is inspired by @misseviehyde‘s Twitter thread here.
It had all ended in an instant for Amber. The bullying head cheerleader of North Ridge high school never would have expected that she would have gone out in the way that she had. It was ironic really that the queen of mean who was notorious for being heartless would have died from a heart attack due to a rare undiagnosed heart condition. It happened in her sleep and in the snap of a finger, she was gone. Although not entirely.
Her soul refused to leave and enter the afterlife. It had plans, it had unfinished business. However each passing moment on earth made it feel weaker and dragged further to the afterlife. It needed a body. Taking the form of a shadow it detached itself from Amber’s body and crept next door to Amber’s neighbours house, the Joneses. It slid in the mailbox and up the stairs until it found what it was looking for. Or more accurately who it was looking for. Cassie Jones
Cassie was in senior year with Amber but that’s where the similarities ended. Where Amber was confident, vain and cruel, Cassie was shy, modest and kind. Amber’s soul would have preferred a more suitable host but time was running out. Cassie slept soundly as the shadow crept closer and closer. Just when it seemed like Amber’s shadow was about to attack, Cassie’s own shadow put up a fight. However Amber’s soul shadow was stronger even in its deteriorating form.
Tumblr media
Amber’s shadow easily dominated Cassie’s. Even in shadow form Cassie was the victim to Amber. Cassie was moaning and groaning in her sleep, unaware of the fight happening but still reacting physically to it. Amber’s shadow began to absorb Cassie’s. It grew stronger in an instant as it latched onto Cassie and became her new shadow. Cassie stopped groaning as Amber’s soul took over and flooded her mind with pleasurable thoughts of being a hot bully. By morning she would be completely new woman. And not just mentally.
A subtle transformation began with Cassie's features. Her innocent and delicate facial structure gained an allure, her soft eyes now laced with a piercing gaze that promised manipulation. Her lashes elongated, giving them a seductive flutter that exuded power and control. Cassie's lips, once gentle and kind, grew fuller and took on a more provocative curve.
Her once modest and shy form underwent a metamorphosis. It molded her slender frame, accentuating her curves with a subtle but unmistakable allure. Her non athletic body began to tone all over, giving her a form that could flip, bend and pose in all the right ways. Even in her sleep her body's natural grace was changed, making her movements alluring and captivating.
Cassie's hair underwent a dramatic transformation. Once a plain and dirty brown, her locks now radiated with a lustrous, bright sheen. Strands of hair became sleeker, cascading in waves that framed her face, hinting at a magnetic allure. The color brightened to an alluring shade of bright blonde, exuding an air of beauty and seduction.
Next her nails underwent a captivating metamorphosis. Once neatly trimmed and natural, they now grew longer, becoming elegant talons painted in a glossy crimson. The tips of her fingers acquired a wicked grace, capable of inflicting both pleasure and pain, a physical representation of her newfound cruelty.
Her breasts, formerly modest in size, swelled and grew, accentuating her curves with a provocative allure. They became a symbol of her newfound sensuality, commanding attention and leaving no doubt of her transformation into a seductive and empowered figure.
These changes, although superficial, served to further mold Cassie's physical appearance into a vessel that embodied Amber's essence. With her hair exuding allure, her nails symbolizing her capacity for manipulation, and her enhanced breast size enhancing her sensual appeal, Cassie's exterior reflected the shadow's wicked intentions. The shadow's power transformed her into a seductive and cruel version of herself, equipped with the tools to captivate and control those who crossed her path.
The transformation extended to her aura, as a chilling confidence infused Cassie's being. Her once timid demeanor was replaced by a calculated charisma that would draw others in, only to be ensnared by her cruelty. The shadow's influence seeped into her every thought, twisting her empathy and kindness into callousness and malice.
As Cassie's sleeping body was reshaped by the shadow's dark power, a cruel and seductive version of her emerged, a haunting echo of Amber's former self. The new Cassie would become a force to be reckoned with, wielding beauty, manipulation, and wickedness in equal measure.
As the first rays of morning light filtered through the curtains, Cassie's eyes fluttered open, unaware of the physical transformation that had occurred while she slumbered. She sat up in bed, stretching her arms, and a surge of newfound confidence surged through her veins. It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a darker side of her personality that had lain dormant until now.
Her new conscience crackled with a newfound wicked desire, laced with a hunger for power and control. A sinister smile curved her lips as she contemplated the possibilities that lay ahead. The once timid Cassie had been replaced by a charismatic predator, ready to manipulate and dominate those around her.
Swinging her legs over the edge of the bed she walked towards her closet passing her full length mirror. She stopped dead in her tracks and walked back to the mirror. Her eyes roamed over the reflection of her body, taking in every curve and every inch of herself.
“I look… perfect. As per usual.” She said self satisfied with a bitchy smirk as she snapped some selfies of herself.
Tumblr media
A new wicked voice whispered seductive suggestions in her mind, urging her to seek admiration and fear from her peers. It fueled her new desire to become the queen of the school, to take down Amber, but with a newfound edge of cruelty and malice. She craved the twisted satisfaction of wielding power over others, of seeing them tremble beneath her reign.
Cassie stood before the mirror, her gaze fixed upon her transformed reflection. A twisted smile crept across her lips as she spoke aloud to herself, her voice dripping with venomous determination.
"Amber, my dear, your reign ends today. I will topple you from your pedestal and claim the throne for myself. You will see, the queen of mean shall now be me, and only me."
She sauntered over to the wardrobe unaware of the flashing lights arriving next door. In her closet she found all her clothes to be lacking and made a mental note to throw it all out later and go on a shopping spree. Finally she settled on an old horse riding outfit she had when she was younger. It clung to her nicely and showed off all her perfect curves.
Venturing outside, her mind was awash with plans and schemes to take down Amber and take up the mantle of queen. It made her positively wet just to think about how much wicked fun she was about to have. However as she looked over to her nemesis’s house she was surprised to see an ambulance pull away with Amber’s parents driving quickly after it.
"Well, well, maybe it'll be easier than I thought. Looks like fate might be lending me a hand." She said to herself as she strolled over to a cop about to leave. Putting on her best sympathetic face she tapped him on the shoulder. The cop whirled around slightly annoyed but his demeanour quickly warmed when seeing the vision of beauty in front of him.
Tumblr media
"Hey officer," she purred, her voice dripping with sweet naivety. "I couldn't help but notice the commotion. Is everything okay?"
The officer, caught off guard by Cassie's sudden attention, cleared his throat and replied, "There was an incident. Amber... well, she had a heart attack in her sleep. Tragic."
Cassie widened her eyes, a mask of false surprise adorning her features. "Oh my, that's awful! She always seemed so healthy. Poor thing."
Inside, Cassie reveled in the news, relishing the confirmation of Amber's demise. Her act of innocence had successfully concealed her wicked intentions, and now she could seize the opportunity that fate had presented.
Cassie's mind swiftly processed the information, concocting a plan to exploit the situation further. With a coy smile, she shifted her focus back to the officer, her eyes glimmering with a mischievous twinkle.
"Officer, I know this may sound strange, but... I was Amber's friend, and she said I could borrow a few of her clothes for a special event tonight," Cassie fibbed, her voice laced with a hint of desperation. "I'd really love to retrieve them as a memento of our friendship. Is there any way you could let me in, just for a moment?"
The officer hesitated, torn between his duty and Cassie's persuasive charm. After a brief pause, he replied, "I'm sorry, miss, but I can't allow unauthorized access. It's a crime scene."
Cassie leaned closer, her eyes sparkling with a mixture of flirtation and innocence. She lightly touched the officer's arm, using her charms to her advantage.
Tumblr media
"Please, Officer... I promise I'll be quick. It would mean the world to me," she pleaded, her voice taking on an alluring tone.
The officer's resolve began to waver as Cassie's charm worked its magic. With a gulp, he finally relented. "Alright, but make it fast and stay out of the way. No touching anything."
Cassie flashed him a grateful smile, hiding her true intentions beneath the façade of a grieving friend. She had successfully manipulated her way into Amber's house, ready to seize not only the opportunity for stylish clothes but to step into the void left by the departed queen bee.
As she swayed up to the door she felt the eyes of the police officer on every curve of her. She’d have him helping her out of the house with clothes, jewelry and makeup before long. Maybe she’d even reward him, but probably not. It was good being a bitch.

Sitting on the floor of the beach cabin, Tango began his admin magic routine.
First, he placed himself in his Decked Out 2 storage room. Deep breaths and a concentrated effort were needed for the walls and ceiling to begin to form, then the myriad of chests. He could still hear and feel everything, but instead of darkness he could clearly see the storage room before him.
Grinning, Tango glanced down at his metaphysical hands. They were bare of gloves in this world, since fire could never harm anything inside his own head. Stretching his arms out, he spun in a circle to make sure everything was properly in place, then moved on to the next step.
He imagined that his body was a redstone machine, almost like a droid or a robot. It materialized in front of him as a diagram of circuitry. Glowing red light bulbs indicated where sensations were coming from. Carefully reaching out, Tango located the first glowing dot on top of the diagram’s head. His fingers touched the red light bulb, gently unscrewing it. The minute the light went out, he could feel the heat from his hair disappearing, the sensation vanishing. Satisfied, Tango reached for the next lightbulb, which was located by his face.
It took a few minutes of unscrewing light bulbs, but Tango could feel himself starting to drift. With each carefully removed lightbulb his body became more detached from sensation. Temperature, sound, taste, the feeling of his heartbeat, all of it was unscrewed and carefully placed in his “inventory.” Then, once the diagram was dim and devoid of lightbulbs, Tango folded it up and carried it to his storage system. The diagram and all the lightbulbs were carefully stored away.
Properly detached from his body, now, Tango could start to feel the chaotic weight of code pressing in on him. His head began to ache. Tense, Tango walked away from the walls of chests and towards the open, cave-like portion of his storage room. In the real room, this cave opening would lead to the interior of Decked Out, stairs leading into the absolutely beautiful system that was his carefully color-coded redstone lives and painstakingly crafted tunnels. Here, in his own mind, the cave opening led to the rest of the world.
As per usual, the first glimpse at the world code was agonizing to look at. Xisuma had described for him one time how he saw code: to the voidkind, he’d said it was like shifting, moving nebulas; beautiful and colorful. Every player saw code differently as it needed to be interpreted by their individual minds. Tango, for this reason, didn’t see nebulas. Instead, millions of scarlet zeroes and ones stared back at him, each strand of code displayed as a string of glittering red binary. Each string laid flat against a surface found in the real world. If Tango looked hard enough he could see how they laid against the flat plane of the floor, or curved around soft bed mattresses and even made up the exterior of his friends.
Grimacing at the confusing sight, Tango began to walk forward. He envisioned a bridge stretching out in front of him, a solid and easily visible pathway for him to walk on, and so it was. The pathway stretched across the coding of the beachhouse and out through the wall, out across the sand. He winced at the sight of the ocean; shifting, chaotically swirling numbers that sent stabs of pain through his eyes. Steeling himself, he imagined his bridge stretching over the waves and kept his eyes firmly fixed forward.
There had to be something beyond the ocean. Even if it was just another few islands, perhaps they would be safer than the one they were currently on. Doing his best to suppress the pain in his temples, Tango stepped out over the water and began his journey.
Y'all, let me tell you, if I ever draw a "1" or a "0" again... it will be too soon XD that binary was BRUTAL. However, I think the effect came out quite nice!! And I've never drawn a bridge like that before so that was quite time consuming but also quite fun :D -Imagine

Guard Post: Citadel Steps
The last guard location we’re looking at (Nyx Week is next week, folks!) is the Citadel itself, where Nyx is posted for the signing. We won’t be looking at the whole Citadel (that is far too much for this post) just the exterior portions where Nyx and other guards are posted.
[[Unless otherwise noted, these screenshots were taken by @starjunco. All images have ID in the Alt]]
Tumblr media
There are two passageways being guarded here - the gate and the Citadel itself. Nyx starts at the top of the stairs into the formal entrance to the Citadel. These steps are hardly accessible, so perhaps those with difficulty walking them (like, say, Noctis in his wheelchair after the attack) likely use alternative entrances - either around the side or below the courtyard level.
There appears to be two guards at each landing of the stairs, here, and one at the top. The lower four are Guardsmen like Petra, but Nyx seems to be the only Glaive we see on duty here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quick look at the area Nyx is directly posted to, showing off some interesting architectural features. There is a mix of modern and ancient - stone and glass, gold lanterns and dark columns. The knotwork and star medallions are quite interesting, as is the glimpse of the middle part of the Lucian Star above the doorway into the building itself. Other than that glimpse, everything here is laid out in strict verticals and horizontals - more greco-roman references, perhaps, especially with the Ionic capital atop the columns.
Tumblr media
We’ll follow Nyx as he paces to see glimpses of the inner plaza. From this angle you can see the temporary scaffolding erected for the large black panels on either side of the building's entrance. They resemble the backdrop for a stage, so perhaps speakers or some type of entertainment or media coverage areas are scheduled there, or they could just be blocking off access to some of the other entrances to the building. In front of Nyx you can see the centerpiece of the plaza (we’ll have a better image later, this is just for your orientation).
Tumblr media
Nyx completes his pace across and turns, letting us see what is beside the steps. More arches here, but the geometric motifs look somewhat like the lanterns below them. That square area could be for an elevator, but is likely just a buttress for the large building given the lack of places to stop or other support.
It’s also nice to see Lucis uses handrails, though they seem very modern even in comparison to this rather modern-looking building.
Beyond, you can see the curved walls that surround this plaza. Though they seem more defensive, they are slightly reminiscent of the colonnades surrounding St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.
Tumblr media
[[From the St. Peter's Plaza wikipedia page]]
At this point, Nyx figures out Crowe’s watch and abandons his post to race back home, so we get a glimpse of the outer gate.
Tumblr media
This gate here could technically be the “Citadel Gate” from the signs in Nyx’s neighborhood, but there hardly seems to be 3km between them, so likely this is an inner gate of some sort. There are a plethora of banners and symbols to feast your eyes upon, but we’ll point out the greenery and tables - this is likely common space for tourists and perhaps those working within the Citadel itself, so they don’t have to leave the area directly.
Though one might expect this area closest to the center of the city and its capitol to be full of historical buildings, it seems to mainly be open spaces and modern skyscrapers. Perhaps something catastrophic happened here to destroy many of them…
It would be odd how few people are here, but there are two explanations, depending on your inclination. The first is these are all vetted people allowed within this area, and thus there are fewer total and, among them, lower percentages of protesters. The second is they didn’t want to waste money on animating a larger crowd.
Tumblr media
Aside from the tragedy of Nyx and Libertus missing each other in the somewhat sparse crowd, this is an interesting view of the rest of the Citadel area. The building in the background is perhaps the same one found in, well, Founder’s Square seen as the Glaives returned to the city at the beginning of the movie:
Tumblr media
It is, of course, possible, that this is a common building style in Insomnia, but judging from the proximity of the Citadel behind it, it likely is the same structure. This could be the ever-elusive Citadel Gate, though it's still not quite 3km from the Citadel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gate here is simple but lovely. Its main identifying feature is these statues. Matching ones appear on the Citadel itself, visible through the gates. The figures appear to be feminine, and the hood and the golden belt might indicate some sort of formal role. These could be akin to the angelic figures from the hotel roof, messengers, priestesses, or (with the white and gold coloring) could represent the Oracles, though they are not usually depicted with the hood.
The elongated hexagons seem to be somewhat of a motif across this whole area, interestingly enough. A sign of the Astrals or their favor, perhaps?
As delicate and pretty as this gilded gate is, though, the road spikes indicate this is intended to be an actual part of the security, as does the massive thickness of the walls on either side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back inside this gate, Petra briefs the guards in the plaza before the Citadel. The citizens appear to be wearing far more white than usual - a sign of formality among non-nobility, or an appeal to the Oracle, perhaps. Or a concession to Niflheim and peace, as Aldercapt often wears white to contrast the Lucian black. Or, honestly, a concession to the heat and the black buildings and glass all around them turning the plaza into an oven.
Two guards appear to have replaced Nyx on the upper landing already, so at least there’s that. Perhaps that’s why Petra got pulled up.
Tumblr media
This is just a cool look at his uniform.
Tumblr media
Looking back at the now open gate from the inside as the Niffs approach. It appears to have the same design on both sides.
Nyx also missed Pruvia in the crowd, but that’s more understandable. There are also some more blond Insomnians, for your worldbuilding needs.
Tumblr media
This lovely aerial view of the plaza shows the layout of the center area, the bridges, the sidewalks the pedestrians are standing on, and the lower level below them.
There are interesting designs visible from this angle, too. Is that red carpet always there, or was it painted/tacked down special for this event? The tiles on the first landing are also lovely, and impossible to see in other shots. Is that rectangular part just before the pyramids some sort of tomb of the unknown soldier, a king’s memorial, or some sort of plaque?
The arrows are also odd, given that Lucians drive on the right inside and outside Insomnia.
Tumblr media
Here’s the promised look at the center of the plaza. The glass pyramids are interesting – perhaps they project light for some sort of display or show? Or just help prevent people from driving straight at the Citadel.
Beside the blurry Nyx among the crowd, if you squint you can see Aldercapt and Ardyn getting out of the car, along with their aides.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The main council members appear to have come out to greet them, though they don’t look particularly happy to be here.
Tumblr media
Neither does Regis, looking on from the windows above. Of course, we know that to be the proper attitude for what’s to come.
But your doom is not yet set! There are still five days before Nyx Week 2023 starts! Good luck!
