Acquired by Suttman in the 1960's when he lived in Italy as a fellow ofthe American Academy of Rome. Three time recipient of the prestigious Prix de Rome Paul Suttman (1933-1993) was an internationally known American sculptor who produced many impressionistic figurative works in bronze. Mr. Suttman's work is represented in the Museum of Modern Art, the Morgan Library, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington In antiquity, the cult of a mother goddess and divine nurse (or kourotrophos) was prevalent throughout the Mediterranean, from Asia Minor to Sicily and from southern Russia to North Africa. The kourotrophos directly intervened in the affairs of men, her domain embracing all aspects of life and death. From early in the Archaic period, images of kourotrophoi frequently appeared in the art of central and Southern Italy. These depictions commonly took the form of a seated female holding a swaddled child. Diana, Mater Matuta, Minerva, Persephone, Turan, and Uni are some of the goddesses worshipped as kourotrophoi in Italy. Terracotta votive statues, statuettes, heads, busts, infants, and anatomical parts were common dedications to a kourotrophos at her sanctuaries in Etruria, Latium, and Campania. EX-VOTOS "Parece um grotesco bazar surrealista: em volta da imagem de um santo, vêem-se esculpidas em cera, barro ou madeira dezenas de pernas, braços, cabeças, pulmões, orelhas, narizes e... garrafas. Se estivermos em capela ou igreja de área rural, além desse "esquartejamento humano, encontraremos esculturas figurativas de tratores, espigas, bois, cavalos, etc. São os ex-votos. Cada um daqueles objetos testemunha, como insólitos troféus canibalistas, uma vitória do santo contra a doença, a pobreza, o vício, a angústia. Ainda que seja comum restringir-se o emprego do termo a essas pequenas esculturas figurativas e quadros, no sentido mais amplo de ser a representação material de uma graça alcançada (ou a alcançar) mediante a promessa, o ex-voto compreenderia todo tipo de oferenda com a finalidade de comprovar ou agradecer uma eficaz (e solicitada) intervenção divina. Sob esse aspecto, dinheiro, animais vivos, jóias, propriedades e outras doações que continuam a ser feitas a determinadas entidades religiosas, por graça alcançada ou para alcançá-la, seriam autênticos ex-votos. Uma das características do ex-voto é o fato de implicar uma certa liberdade de ação do devoto: ele "escolhe" seu santo e a forma de pagamento da graça a alcançar. A promessa, que "deve ser feita com fé" para que o pedido seja atendido, envolve ainda o relacionamento direto com a divindade, a quem se pede algo por algo, numa relação de troca ou de interesses que projeta o mundo utilitário do indivíduo para o mundo sobrenatural. As peças que compõem a coleção dos ex-votos revelam a diversidade dos simbolismos e dos materiais com que foram confeccionados, como cera, madeira, barro, tecido, com destaque para quadros pintados a óleo sobre madeira, que são raríssimos."
