Unable to smile or raise his forehead, he had learnt to lead a lifestyle that did not incorporate these expressions. He finally decided to get this surgically address at our hospital A dynamic facial reanimation surgery was performed to reanimate his face. Under general anesthesia, a strip of fascia lata was first harvested from his thigh region. One end of this was attached to the lower end of the temporalis muscle and the other end to the corner of his mouth. He was extremely happy to have an expressive face again. Inktober 2018 Day Six: Drooling

A couple of weeks ago, our dog Gelda came down with facial palsy and this caused her to drool out of one side of her mouth all the time. Other than that, she was her usual happy self. It's cleared up since, but I tried to remember what it looked like at the time. The drawing itself is a mess and I'm not even going to try to clean it up going to do any post-work on it. I did this in a state of exhaustion and it shows. However, once I realized that this drawing wasn't going anywhere, I could experiment with the Copic markers and see how they behaved. That made the drawing even worse, but now I know they do soak and leak through the sketchbook paper and also they trap the pencil lines underneath them. That's worth learning about.

In this “fight” the former muscle often wins over the latter, simply because it is larger and stronger. Result: mouth corner on the affected side ”looks down” instead of “up”. This Tuesday we want to bring #awareness to BELL’S PALSY!

@webmd defines #bellspalsy as Bell’s palsy is a condition in which the muscles on one side of your face become weak or paralyzed. It affects only one side of the face at a time, causing it to droop or become stiff on that side.

It’s caused by some kind of trauma to the seventh cranial nerve. This is also called the “facial nerve.” Bell’s palsy can happen to anyone. But it seems to occur more often in people who have diabetes or are recovering from viral infections.

Most of the time, symptoms are only temporary.

If it happens to you, you may fear you’re having a stroke. You’re probably not. A stroke that affects your facial muscles would cause muscle weakness in other parts of your body, too.

Bell’s Palsy is truly a rare illness that comes as a surprise to the person enduring it. Some patients who suffer from endure panic attacks, depression, and more during the first days of their episode. Dynamic Facial Reanimation Surgery This young woman developed left-sided facial palsy around two years ago. Onset was sudden. She was unable to smile, crinkle her nose or furrow her forehead after developing palsy. There was also the inability to completely close her left eye. This had distressed her. It was decided to perform a dynamic facial reanimation surgery. Under general anesthesia, a strip of fascia lata was harvested from her vastus lateralis. This was then tunneled from the corner of the left side of the mouth to the lower end of the temporalis muscle. The young woman regained all her facial expressions following surgery.
