Yeast cells under a confocal microscope. The confocal microscope compared a brightfield image and fluorescent image of the yeast cells. The program combined the two images to show a more detailed fluorescent image (pictured).

The aim of this research project was to analyze the cellular machinery of MCD1 though fluorescence microscopy. Thus, we introduced Green Fluorescence Protein (GFP) into the genome of our eukaryotic model organism, S. cerevisiae. This was achieved by attaching the gene for GFP, as well as the gene for kanamycin resistance (KanR) downstream to the MCD1 complex through genetic modification. By analyzing the genome of S. cerevisiae using Seq Builder, we were able to create and order primers to bind to specific locations in our organism’s genetic code, allowing our model organism to acquire the additional GFP and KanR genes.
