So, to start this off, I want to say that I’m not doing this to be confrontational, but rather to educate about body types! And to open meaningful discourse and not just mindless shit flinging.

A lot of people don’t know the difference between fat/chunky and fit, and that’s totally fine! Not everyone has the proper anatomy and physiology knowledge to make the distinction - I didn’t really learn until my anatomy classes in college, followed by years of studying live models of all body types.

So let’s look at the claim here: Bigby is fat. Which is fine! It’s great even! It’s awesome to have such diverse headcanons about things and put those into your works - it’s what makes fandom great. Everyone has a different idea of how a character looks. But the term that’s important here is HEADCANON. Meaning that it’s not canon. And that you can’t enforce it and shame others for feeling differently about a certain character. 

Now it’s totally fine to practice Death of the Author and ignore whatever Willingham intended - shit, that’s what I do. And the main Fables run didn’t really give us good views of Bigby shirtless - almost as if they’re shy about it. But The Wolf Among Us had no such qualms. They showed us all of what Bigby looked like. (What a power move.) So what does Bigby look like in TWAU?

Which is awesome, because it gives us the whole “fit action badass” that people seem to enjoy. But what a lot of people don’t know is that this is NOT what fitness looks like. At all. You see, to get muscle definition like this, you have to strip away your body’s fat reserves, dehydrate yourself, and eat a mostly protein diet. It’s not healthy at all. There’s a reason this body only exists in media - in movies, comics, games, etc - and that’s because it is so hard to maintain and so detrimental to one’s health that they shouldn’t maintain it. 

Now, this is easy to discuss in the abstract, so let me pull in an example from real life.

This is Jason Mamoa, specifically in his role for Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. Look at those biceps! Abs! Pecs! Yummy, am I right? But this body is only possible through careful calculation - he has a personal trainer, a dietitian, and a director who demands he look like this. And sure, he looks like this for a few weeks to even a few months, but that’s terribly unhealthy for him. I can’t imagine how dehydrated he must be all the time. But what does he look like when he’s not filming?

Almost like a different person! See, this is what Jason Mamoa looks like without the program and diet. But make no mistake - he’s fitter than you and I will ever be. Because even though he’s not filming, he’s a big movie star. Meaning that his job between movies is to maintain a body that can be movie ready in 6-8 weeks. So he’s still incredibly fit, even though people on twitter like to call this a “dad bod.” 

How can we tell if he’s fit? Well, look at his hips. See how he still has a V for his hips, even though his abs aren’t cut? And his biceps are still massive and look great. and the pecs are still perky and defined.

Now compare this image to the image of Bigby cleaning his shirt off. In the long shot panel, you can clearly see lines indicating the side of his ab muscles, meaning that he has abs underneath that skin. His biceps are huge, and his pecs are defined and perky. Meaning that - say it with me now, class - Bigby is FIT. Really fit! Healthy fit! Which is awesome!

But fit does not mean fat. If he were “fat” as was claimed, his pecs would sag, and his belly would jut out in that side view provided. No, instead, his belly is flat in that suit. 

Wheeling back around to my first statement - it’s totally fine if you HC Bigby as fat! It’s awesome! But you can’t say it’s canon when it’s clearly not, nor can you look down, mock, and belittle people for saying otherwise. Nor can you act like you stand on a moral high ground for drawing Bigby as fat. This is where the real issue stems from, I think.

Having abs and super toned muscles isn’t easily done nor is it really sustainable. I’m not stretching, I’m literally just informed lmao. I’m not saying that doing drugs and skipping liquids is going to give you abs, but if you’re someone who works out regularly and has muscles then they’re going to be more pronounced when you’re dehydrated. Having muscles and looking super toned aren’t the same thing

1. A lot of body builders use a wide variety of drugs to achieve their looks and many of them are legal but ultimately dangerous if misused, it’s an industry wide problem. And it’s a basic rule for them to be super dehydrated during competitions. And why? Because being dehydrated is what keeps the muscles showing up like they do

Why is this important and relevant? Because the people you first think of when people think of ripped dudes aren’t healthily like that. They get dehydrated and go on drugs lol. Literally that’s how they get that way for competitions. The drugs work to further dehydrate you, burn any and all fat, and swell the muscles.

2. You can also have pronounced muscles soon as you work out. Working out tightens and swells the muscles. A lot of actors work out shortly before shirtless scenes, notably I remember Tyler Posey working out before every shirtless scene. And why? Because that’s going to naturally make your muscles stick out. It’s why dudes take gym selfies, because your muscles look and perform the best when they’re being used and challenged. But even so, it’s not permanently sustainable to workout so much everyday that you have super pronounced muslces the rest of your life. I’m not saying you can’t be strong and have muslces, but it requires work to achieve pronounced ones.

3. The men in the movies like Hugh Jackman and Jason Mamoa don’t look like that when filming is done. They go on super intense diets to lower their fat and dehydrate your body. That’s how you get that look. Dehydration. So many buff actors are way healthier when they aren’t filming. It’s an actual problem in Hollywood that impacts their health.

Yes, you can be toned and have muscles without drugs or working to dehydrate yourself but it’s really hard to sustain for long periods of time, to the point that most just don’t. You can have it but it’s not sustainable.

This Jason Momoa is buff as hell and you can still see where he has muscles, but he isn’t super toned because he isn’t actively working to look like that. He’s not currently filming and doesn’t need to achieve the “look” that you see in the media.

Conclusion: like my post said, having abs and super toned muscles long term is hard to have and not sustainable. There’s a reason huge male stars stop looking like THAT once filming is over. The reason most people you see have that look is a combination of drugs and dehydration. There are also people who choose to work out before needing to show off their body, and they are another case that says having super pronounced abs continuously is not sustainable. I wasn’t reaching.

I’m not even a guy, and so these kinda of body image issues don’t really impact me. But this is literally so similar to how we starve Hollywood women to achieve a desired look that just isn’t sustainable for the average woman. And I do think talking about the dangerous things we make men do is important. From the female gaze of Taylor Lautner (who was literally a child when forced into extreme diets) to Hugh Jackman, a male power fantasy we force these men to perform to such a high and dangerous standard that it creates unrealistic expectations about pronounced muslces.

Again, not just having muslces but having the well defiened ones that we saw Jackson have at the beginning of the season. What he had then wasn’t realistic or sustainably and it’s not a surprise he didn’t maintain that high standard in the house.

I really fucking hate a lot of the older Cuban folks from south Florida. They're fucking racist to most, if not all POC, and their own fellow latinxs. I've had my boyfriend's side of the family passively and subtlety berate my Mexican heritage unprovoked, and Ive gotten the stink eye from one or more of his family members whenever I or him spoke out about it. Fortunately we don't associate with them anymore, but it's still mind boggling. Fuck this shitty ass state, I want out😞L

Then leave or go to Orlando like my high school BFF did. Her Cuban dad is hella racist towards her Mexican bf even though he married and had 2 kids (one of whom is the bff) from a white woman. 

And I remember in high school my bff had a boyfriend that was Cuban that she knew in middle school (before she met me in HS) and the guy was REALLY abusive but not physically, more emotionally because he would literally pull her away from all her friends (including me) when we tried to talk to her and isolate her somewhere else. This is when the Mexican bf came in and started flirting with her in her science class. Now imagine this: The Cuban bf was short and fat with the body hair of a fucking werewolf and the Mexican was tall, dark and handsome, like…….think of a young Mexican Jason Momoa so you KNOW my bff was falling for him because in addition to that he wrote her poems and songs and did that corny thing where a guy gives you a dozen roses and says “when all of these wither I’ll stop loving you” knowing one of them is fake so it’ll never wither. I don’t think the Mexican knew my bff had a man so one time he kissed her and she told me she liked it and I’m not gonna say I………..full on manipulated her but I definitely gave her a nudge towards him by saying things like “oh don’t feel guilty its just a kiss!” and eventually, she did leave the fat Cuban werewolf for Mexican Jason Mamoa and they’ve been together ever since and you can imagine how much her Cuban father likes this. They now live together in Orlando because the Mexican bf wants to be an animator for Disney.

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: The Spice Melange

It’s been a year since Dune was supposed to release and the bug ruined everything. So many flicks have been pushed back or have suffered at the box office because people refuse to do right by each other over actual stupidity. I’ve waited patiently and finally, after what seemed like forever, i get to see this f*cking glory for myself. I’ve heard great things about it, the buzz is substantial, but i also know that Deni Villaneuve is super hard to penetrate for the casual viewer and Frank Herbert writes the densest of sh*t. A lot of critics enjoyed what was presented but i don’t know if a general audience will have the wherewithal to tolerate the run time or content. Either way, i saw it and i got opinions about it so let’s get into that sh*t!

The Outstanding

Immediately you’re hit with the overwhelming beauty of this film. Dune is as gorgeous as Blade Runner 2049 and i say that knowing i hold Deni’s sequel in exceptionally high regard. This f*cking movie is a straight up feat for the eyes and i so rich, it’ll make you fat.

The realization of Herbert’s world is fantastic. It’s been years since I've read the novels but, from what i remember, Deni has done a fantastic job adaptation what was on the page, to the screen. I can’t comment if it translates the book very well but it definitely makes the overwhelming detail of Herbert’s novel, incredibly compelling and easily digestible. That, alone, is a whole ass feat because Doom is not kind to passive readers.

On a similar note, i have to give a very approving nod toward the overall aesthetic of this world. Every faction has a distinct look, a distinct feel, and it’s fantastic to see. From costumes to architecture to tech; All of it has a very unique feel to each of the principal clans. It really reminds me of what Jordokowsky had planned for his Dune. We’ll never get to see that ac id trip caught on film, but Deni has his own vision and it came together swimmingly.

The sound design is exceptional. This sh*t is as important as the overall look. Seriously, take this soundtrack away from this film and it’s so much less. Probably still good but nowhere near as great as it could have been. Honestly, this score is everything. I would unironically listen to it in my car with no hesitation.

Denis Villeneuve really did his thing with this one. You can tell this was a passion project for him because the technical brilliance is outstanding. Deni is fantastic at his craft, dude is master, but he is legitimately in top form with this movie and it’s all the more for it.

The Great

I love the writing in this flick. Frank Hubert’s original novel is a monolith of content. That sh*t is disgustingly dense and super hard for casuals to penetrate. The writing in this film has done a decent job of condensing all of that lore while keeping it pretty exciting. There aren’t many lulls in this script but it’s definitely not all action, all the time.

This cast is fantastic. I was already on board when Villeneuve was announced as director but this cast definitely sealed the deal. Oscar Issac, Dave Batista, Stellan Skarsgard, David Dastmalchian, and Zendaya Coleman all show up in force. No one gives a bad performance at all. Timothee Chalamet is good but a little disappointing in the lead, Paul Atreides. However, this is easily the best performance I've ever seen Jason Mamoa deliver. Dude really delivers as Duncan Idaho. Fantastic casting, all around.

As much praise as i have for the overall cast, it’s Rebecca Ferguson who’s the f*cking MVP. It might be Chalamet’s story but but this is Ferguson’s film, for sure. Ferguson steals every scene she’s in as Paul’s witchy mother, Lady Jessica. There is a sadness to Ferguson’s that belies a heated passion and violence which bubbles just under the surface. I’ve been a fan of hers for years and this performance just validates my adoration because, holy sh*t, she makes this film.

The Good

This thing doesn’t hold your hand at all but distributes Herbert’s rather meticulous narrative in a way that makes it digestible to the common moviegoer. It’s borderline absurd how accessible this film is considering the loftiness of the source material. I know there is a lot missing, adapting a Dune film true to the content would be impossible, but i think Deni did a great job carving the necessary fat.

The pacing is exquisite. This movie is over two hours long but it never feels like it at all. There is a lot of action and very little downtime between scenes. It gets you to where the plot wants you to be, with an extreme efficiency.

The Verdict

Dune is a f*cking masterpiece. It’s the best film I've seen all year, outside of maybe The Green Knight. I can't say it's a great translation of the book so, if you're a fan of Herbert's work, directly, you might be disappointed but, as a cliff notes of that dense ass narrative, this movie nails it. Out side of the adaption stuff, as a movie itself, sh*t is cash, man. Strong ass performances, a real vision for the world, gorgeous costumes, epic set pieces, fantastic writing, brilliant direction; This is a near perfect film. The only thing, i think, holding it back was Timothee Chalamet as Paul, and even that isn’t even a complaint because he’s still decent. I thought he could have been better but dude is still good. I had an amazing time with this movie and it deserves every bit the hype it has.

So apparently, Blake Shelton is the Sexiest Man Alive. He is not even the sexiest guy on “the voice” he is like #4, (I am aware that there are only 3 guys on the show).
