Today's compilation:
Finnischer Tango: Tule Tanssimaan 1998 Tango / Finnish Folk
Wow, you really thought that I wasn't ever going to cover Finnish tango, didn't you? And that's only because you didn't even know that it ever existed in the first place, right? Well, guess what? Finland apparently *really* loves this traditional South American folk dance music. Tango reached the country in 1913 and it's been sewn into their musical fabric ever since, and not as some cute niche, but as one of the nation's most popular genres, overall. You probably wouldn't think tango to be part and parcel of the Finnish soul and experience, but it actually very much has been for multiple generations now.
And tango's unlikely popularity in Finland wasn't the product of some significant South American diaspora either. Some traveling musicians just started playing it there, and by the 40s, it had been developed into a dominant component of the country's very own music charts. Plus, since 1985, there's been a very popular annual tango festival in the town of Seinäjoki too, which is said to draw about 2% of the country's entire population. All pretty fascinating, no?
But this collection of tunes here from the Munich-based Trikont label also isn't your typical Finnish tango CD either—if ever there was such a thing—because, across the many genres and historic scenes that Trikont covers, their specialty is basically what amounts to musical archaeology: they dig *really* deep for those obscure fossils that no one else seems to have really uncovered or brought to light before. And I am someone who is as wet behind the ears as literally anyone can be when it comes to Finnish tango, but if you're someone who considers themselves a bit of a FINtango fiend, then this appears to be some essential listening for you.
Ultimately, for me though, I really don't enjoy listening to much traditional folk music of any kind, and that now includes Finnish tango as well. But if it sounds interesting to you, this thing has tracks on it that span all the way from 1915 up until 1996, so it'll allow you to get a taste of how this uniquely Finnish phenomenon has been developed and shaped over very many years, and with a slate of tracks that don't seem to have been on many people's radar at the time when they were originally recorded too.
No highlights.

it takes one to tango
I listened to an old Finnish Tango called Syyspihlajan alla, Under the Autumn Rowan. It’s a perfectly danceable classical tango, and nothing in the melody will tell you how deeply melancholic the lyrics are. There’s even a mention of blood which gives it almost a goth vibe.
--
Punertaa marjat pihlajan, kuin verta niillä ois. On kurkiaurat lentäneet jo yli pääni pois.
(Lyrics Arvo Kalliola, Music Arvo Koskimaa)
--
Berries of the rowan tree are getting red, as if they were covered in blood. Wedges of cranes have flown away over my head. They didn’t take me with them to the faraway lands Wingless creatures have to settle with the shackles of the cold ground.
The night wind remains as my sister singing her songs and the rain, with cold tears, beats on the dark window I see many beggars of the earth rushing by I once waited for someone who will now never come

For drawing practice, im drawing my favorite trafficblr artists’s Tangos. How do you do his hair? I must know. Also, How many languages can you identify? :>
Tumblr media
I usually start with the pompadour like part in the middle, and then the bits in front of his ears like im about to draw that particular styld of mohawk on that pay day chick. Then I draw the back of the hair like sorta heavily stylized flames sorta messily combed back hair, then I draw his hairline, try to round it and push it back aay farther than the middle part, one v to show its pushed back but simplified down for ease (in older art you can see me drawing it more messily with more vs)
Any other detail is in colouring phase but I tend to colour the flames like streaks and shading more than actual flames
Also I think three? Japanese finnish and french? I dunno if thats egyptian I just know mau is cat in egyptian i think? Or its the name of the breed anyways... I don't really have a brain for languages :x

Because I can't keep quiet anymore, I'm just gonna tell what I have planned.
A domestic AU in which they all work everyday jobs or go to school in Hamburg. The main characters will be Jere, Bojan and Chris - especially Chris though. Some things I got planned already in terms of who works as what:
Chris - He's a music label owner coming from and living in Hamburg who specializes in bands and solo artists in the Rock, Metal and Alternative genre. Chris is very laid back, enjoys having a coffee on his balcony during the weekends whenever the weather is warm and sunny and occasionally writes and produces some songs himself.
Jere - He works as a tattooist and owns his own shop called "Sunrise parlor". The shop's motto is "It's crazy, it's party" which fits well with how Jere lives his life. People normally call him by his Finnish tattoo artist name Käärijä, his trademark is the Rammstein tattoo on the left side of his chest that he likes to show others as much as he can - he's very proud of it.
Bojan - He's a Slovenian barista working in the café Ljubljana. A bright and always smiling guy who's one of the four owners of the café he works in. His work days are usually Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 6 AM to 2 PM. Sometimes, he manages the café's bar in the evenings, but that almost only happens on Sundays.
Fatima - A well-known sommelier from Canada who's always on the lookout for the best wine and thus travels around the world a lot. Very fashionable and doesn't allow anyone to tell her what to do. Her commonly used name outside of home is La Zarra.
Marco - He's an Italian voice actor who usually synchronizes children's cartoon characters. Very kind and loving, and cares a lot about his friends and family. He sometimes babysits for a friend whenever he has the time - he doesn't mind doing it either, since he knows he's good with kids, and kids love him simply for existing.
Pavel - A therapist from Moldova who decided to go to Germany to see more of the world - what he also left in Moldova was his birth name Pavel, as he now normally goes by Pasha. He's a bit of a hippie and loves traveling more than anything, preferably to a new place every time he travels. His office hours are 8 AM to 4 PM Monday to Thursday with the exception of Friday, the only day that he works until 1 PM.
Alessandra - She's a college student majoring in music who frequently travels between her campus home and her actual home in Norway. It's easy to excite her and she loves adventures more than anything. Often times, she's seen singing to herself while doing school work.
Luka - An actor from Serbia who does modeling on the side. Because his non-Serbian manager often had trouble pronouncing his surname, Luka quickly adopted the name Luke Black and now goes by this name most of the time. Only his closest friends and family now call him Luka. Due to his perpetual baby face, he still has to give out his ID often enough that it's become almost embarrassing to him, but nobody knows that. He's a little mysterious and very focused on his work but still great at always being there for his loved ones, no matter what.
Remo - Another music major who shares some classes with Alessandra. He loves working with kids and singing to them the most, knowing it makes them smile which always makes him just as happy. Whenever he has a break from school that's long enough, he fetches himself a train ticket from Germany to Switzerland and goes straight back home to his family, staying there for as long as he can every time.
Maria - She's a dance teacher from Portugal who wanted to bring some Iberoromanic passion into "the dreary Hamburg only zombies can half-assedly enjoy", so she mainly focuses on dances such as salsa, tango and sometimes samba, with Alessandra and Remo being two of her students. Her bright attitude and dazzling smile are often times so infective, even the grumpiest grandpas can't help but smile at the sight of her. Her students lovingly call her Miss Mimicat.
Teodora (Teya) and Selina-Maria (Salena) - These two run a podcast together - after having been competitors for a good while - about all kinds of things they usually talk about called "The Teya & Salena Chronicles". They're especially popular in their home country Austria though their popularity amongst especially German and Swiss people has risen drastically as of late. The two love snickering about inside jokes to each other here or there and often crack jokes whenever things are too boring for their liking.
I think twelve characters should be enough for now, lol. I'll post a small teaser soon, if my upcoming finals don't kill me first, that is.

at this point my life is like this- watching kaurismäki movies on an almost daily basis, drawing finnish actors, daydreaming about finland, doing the finnish duolingo courses for hours, stalking my finnish mutuals, listening to Maustetytöt and melancholic finnish tango

What kind of music are you into?
Classical (except for opera) and oldies (save for finnish tango) mostly. My girlfriend doesn't like Leonard Cohen and the baby hates Frank Sinatra, so we're looking for compromises. My girlfriend's music absolutely cannot be played around babies or the elderly, so usually my suggestions are the ones that everyone finds the most palatable.

Finland and Sweden headcanons
Came up with more Hetalia headcanons.
Finland should be scary.
Everyone thinks Sweden is the scary one. No. (At least in American pop culture, however, Swedish people are akin to Canadians, so it would be funny if America doesn't think Sweden is scary at all. He's too young, he's never had to deal with the Vikings! Plus, Sweden raised him for a bit!)
Finland, however. Finland fought off Russia. Finland will fight off Russia again (if it comes to it.) Finland listens to Black Metal. Finland is an introvert. His silly language and wife-carrying custom makes him look harmless. No.
I've been reading the mythology of Kullervo and Kalevipoeg. It's some pretty dark shit. Everyone knows about Sweden, but Finland and Estonia are the ones you have to watch out for. God help you.
Also, I also encountered some delightful information about the Finnish tango. Oh, yes.
Stockholm Syndrome is sometimes called Helsinki Syndrome. Guess who's stuck with both Russia and Sweden? That's right, Finland.
Estonian war singing. Enough said.
