Tankiste Operating Inside the Tank
This is an impression of a French tank crewman operating inside their tank. One may see this uniform on tankiste when in their vehicles during battle. The iconic leather 'Veste en Cuir' can be seen, similar to the coats worn by the Paris Fire Brigade. These coats were mainly issued to motorists and tank crews, however its fire-resistant qualities meant that flamethrower troops also wore them into battle. Many variants of this coat exist and the model shown here is a standard double-breasted version with a leather collar and left breast pocket. Other more common examples would feature a felt collar. The black coat was worn over the light blue tunic as its color masks the constant bombardment of vehicle oil and grease the tankiste would attract when operating inside their vehicle. Burn resistant gloves can be worn as well, mainly used to handle hot extracted shells from the tank's guns.
What is truly unique to the tankiste uniform of the Great War is the tank crew splatter mask, seen looped around the neck and worn. When bullets and other projectiles impacted the outside of the tank, the shock of these objects would sometimes cause the armor to spall on the inside. Flakes of armor would fly off inside the tank and depending on the impact strength and size of the spall, could cause irritation, wounds, or even death to the crew. By far the number one leading cause of injury in the tanks was head injuries. Because of this, the British would design a splatter mask that protected the wearer from medium to small sized armor spalling and burns. The masks consists of a steel faceplate perforated with horizontal slits with a nosepiece and chain mail covering the lower face. The faceplate is covered by brown leather on the outside and chamois leather on the inside. The mask is fastened to the face using four canvas ribbons.
The AS would obtain the masks through American officers who had trained with the British tankers and 1,840 masks would be first issued to crews of the Schneider CA and Saint-Chamond tanks in May 1918. The first three light tank companies’ part of 501e RAS named AS 301, AS 302, and AS 303 would also be entrusted to test the splatter mask in real battle conditions in late 1918. While the mask was effective in protecting the crew's face from spalling, many would opt to not wear it in order to maintain unobstructed visibility when inside the tank. This is an original example which I am incredibly happy to have as they are quite rare nowadays.
Another unique piece of kit for the tankiste was their Adrian helmets - or more specifically the modifications the tankiste would perform to them. As the Artillerie Spéciale was considered to be part of the regular artillery, the tankiste were issued standard Casque Adrian Modèle 1915 with the artillery badge of a flaming bomb over two crossed cannons. The front brim of the standard Adrian helmet did not allow the tankiste to get decent visibility through the 5 mm wide vision slits on the tank, so the tankiste would cut off the front brim to allow for closer viewing. Some modified helmets would have makeshift padding of either cloth or leather on the front of them. Others just folded over a few millimeters of the brim so the sharp edge of the cut was not exposed. The modifications would begin to be seen in late 1917 and was widespread among the crews by late 1918. It would spread naturally through the tankiste in the field and by the time that Generals had taken note of the unauthorized modifications, they would have already seen the combat improvements this modification would give the crews and allowed for it to be done. This helmet features the second model liner with six teeth and four corrugated aluminum spacers which reduce helmet wobble. The leather helmet liner was fixed onto the Adrian helmet through the use of two spikes on each side which puncture the scrap wool outer panel on the liner and are then folded over to secure the liner to the helmet.
Also pictured is a pair of civilian racing binoculars. It was up to the tank commander on whether they wanted to purchase a pair of binoculars for use in the tank. There were several options available at the time, both within military bazaars and within the civilian realm. Soldiers equipped with basic civilian binoculars was not an uncommon sight.
We also see the use of a flare pistol, specifically a Pistolet Géant pattern flare pistol designed by Manufrance before the war. As a tankiste within the Artillerie Spéciale, a flare pistol such as this would be used to signal supporting friendly artillery to lay down smoke shells to mask the tank's movement during attack. Each tank was, in theory, provided a flare pistol for this purpose. Smoke was important for masking the movement of the tanks during the attack because the tanks main threat apart from mines was accurate German artillery fire. There were several methods the AS would use to prevent German guns from being able to engage the tanks such as having an aircraft that would accompany the advance of the tanks. This aircraft was mainly tasked with directing counter-battery fire on enemy artillery. A further six fighter aircraft would be attached to protect this plane from responding enemy aircraft.

On November 15th 1824 Edinburgh's Great Fire began.
The fire lasted for five days and destroyed many historic buildings on the Royal Mile. Fires were not an uncommon occurrence in early 19th century Edinburgh, thanks to the city’s many wooden buildings – particularly in the overcrowded Old Town. But the Great Fire of 1824 was the worst the city had ever seen, burning for five whole days. The fire broke out on the evening of Monday 15 November 1824, in John Kirkwood’s engraving workshop on Old Assembly Close. The alarm was raised at 10pm, but by midnight the fire had spread to three nearby tenements, engulfing all six stories of the buildings in flames. Despite 10 fire engines (and soldiers from Edinburgh Castle) arriving quickly on the scene, the fire had destroyed much of the south side of the High Street within just a few hours.
The Old Assembly Hall was completely destroyed during the night, and by noon the next day the fire had reached the Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile. The historic spire of the Tron Kirk caught fire and began to pour molten lead onto the street below. When the church’s spire finally collapsed, many citizens were convinced that the fire was a vengeful act from God. A divine punishment
By that evening, a second fire had broken out on the top floor of an 11-storey tenement on the corner of the High Street and Parliament Close. Many saw this second blaze as further proof that Edinburgh’s citizens were experiencing divine punishment from God – but, in reality, it was probably caused by a smouldering ember drifting from the original fire into the building.
Firefighters tried to save Parliament Hall and the Law Courts, but their attempts were largely in vain. This area later had to be rebuilt, and is now known as Parliament Square. Those tackling the blaze did, however, manage to prevent the flames from reaching the iconic St Giles Cathedral. Other buildings destroyed included the shop belong to John Kay (a famous caricaturist and engraver), James Boswell’s birth place, and the offices of the Edinburgh Courant, one of the city’s top newspapers.
Of course you can always rely on it to rain in Scotland and thanks to a heavy downpour of rain on Wednesday evening, the fire was brought largely under control, although small blazes did continue to burn. The final smouldering ashes were not fully extinguished until Friday 21 November – five days after the fire broke out.
Over 400 homes were thought to have been destroyed, with between 400 and 500 families left homeless and injured. Thirteen people died in the Great Fire of Edinburgh, including two firemen who were attempting to tackle the blaze. Over the following few days, engineers from Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Navy were employed to tear down the burnt remains of all the destroyed buildings along the Royal Mile. The cost of the damage was thought to be around £200,000 – an enormous sum for the time.
Just two months prior to the Great Fire of Edinburgh, the city became the first in the world to have a municipal fire service. It was founded by James Braidwood, who was just 24 years old at the time. Since the fire service was so new, many of the firefighters had not yet received full training, and struggled with the enormous scale and ferocity of the blaze. The young fire master, Braidwood, was heavily criticised by the public, but an enquiry after the disaster found that he and his firemen were not to blame.
Other public officials (such as bailies and law officers) had given contradictory instructions to the firemen, which had caused confusion. As a result of this, a new regulation was passed to state that the city’s fire master was to be given complete control of all firefighting operations during an emergency. Thanks to Braidwood’s pioneering work, this model for a municipal fire service (headed up by a knowledgeable and experienced fire master) was adopted all across Britain. Braidwood later went on to help establish the London Fire Engine
Establishment, which would eventually become the London Fire Brigade. In 2008, he was honoured with a statue in Edinburgh. Parliament Square was chosen as its location, to pay homage to the work Braidwood and his crew did to save St Giles Cathedral.
Three of the pics are by the noted photographer and artist David Octavious Hill.

THE CHRONICLES OF AMBER & History Lessons II
The first two books of Roger Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber — Nine Princes in Amber and The Guns of Avalon — were written between 1967 and the early 1970s.  The Vietnam War cast a long shadow from the 1960s into the first years of the next decade.  In Nine Princes in Amber, for example, one of the most memorable episodes of action and conflict occurs in the seventh chapter:
“The sheets of light and heat flapped a steady, welling thunder as we ran, and the waves of warmth beat upon us, washed over us. Soon they were right there alongside us, and the trees blackened and the leaves flaked down, and some of the smaller trees began to sway.  For as far ahead as we could see, our way was an alley of fires…  We made it to the fork, though, beating out flames on our smoldering clothing, wiping ashes from our eyes…  We ran through burning grasses…  The interlocked branches of the trees overhead had become as the beams in a cathedral of fire…”
The Vietnam War was part of the nightly news back then.  Stories and images of napalm and agent orange falling upon the jungles of Southeast Asia were current at the time and the quote above would have resonated in the American consciousness.  But it was not just the horrors of war haunting America.  There was also civil unrest and a rebellious younger generation ready to take up arms against the old guard who had nourished the conflicts and tensions leading to the strife stretching from the ’60s into the ’70s.
After the baptism of fire experienced by narrator and main character Corwin — which concludes with the provident arrival of riflemen trained and led by him to defend Amber and position him as the kingdom’s effective ruler — he finds himself at the top of a society struggling with an uneasy and temporary peace.  Powerful foes have been unleashed upon the immortal city, and it looks like it may have been an inside job.  In fact, it may even be that Corwin himself has provided unintended assistance to the enemy.  This self-reflective attitude of examining one’s own role in the evils plaguing the world belonged very much to the troubling era which began with the assassination of President Kennedy and ended with the resignation of President Nixon.
Tumblr media
SIGN OF THE UNICORN (1975)
History:  The longest gap between the publication of any of the books of The Chronicles of Amber:  three years.  An air of defeat hangs over America, as well as over places beyond.  The Club of Rome puts out its report “The Limits to Growth” and in 1974 the world population reaches four billion.  The Apollo 13 failure of 1970 has left its mark, followed by a decline in support for the program dooming the final three missions to cancellation.  Apollo 17 therefore sees the last men on the Moon in December of 1972, when one of the most popular photographs ever is taken — the iconic “Blue Marble” image of a nearly full Earth — and soon becomes an emblem of the environmental movement.  In contrast to the “Blue Marble,” in the summer of ’72 the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Napalm girl” photograph makes headlines, and less than a year later the last U.S. soldier leaves Vietnam subsequent to the Paris Peace Accords.  The war is over and the U.S. did not win it.
The war may be over, but deep problems remain — a description of the years during which Zelazny wrote Sign of the Unicorn, but also a description of the contents of the book itself.  “The Troubles” — as the conflict in Northern Ireland comes to be called — of the United Kingdom undergo a rapid escalation:  the British Army shoots dead 14 unarmed marchers on terrible Bloody Sunday; the British embassy in Dublin is burned down during rioting all over Ireland; bombs detonate in Whitehall and the Old Bailey; car bombs set by the Ulster Volunteer Force in Dublin and Monaghan kill 33 civilians and injure 300 others.
Meanwhile, a story just as big unfolds on the other side of the Atlantic:  Five White House operatives are arrested for the burglary of the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel.  Nixon orders special prosecutor Archibald Cox to be fired over his subpoena of recordings of incriminating White House conversations, but is eventually compelled by the Supreme Court to release the tapes.  Impeachment proceedings underway, the public and even members of the Republican Party against him, Nixon resigns in August of 1974 and the unelected Vice President, Gerald Ford, becomes President.  Likewise, Eric falls and Corwin steps in as the interim regent of an Amber reeling from war and internal strife, a state of affairs closely matching the condition of America as offered in Nixon’s resignation speech.
Lesson:  Corwin finds himself the target of an attempt to frame him for the murder of Caine, his brother Gérard pummels him in a fight and dangles him over a cliff, he is nearly stabbed to death in his suite only hours after Brand is knifed in similar fashion, in the misty city of ghosts known as Tir-na Nog’th he is attacked and comes perilously close to plummeting to his death.  In this context, the cautions of his sister Fiona regarding the dangers of wearing for too long the ultimate artifact of power, the Jewel of Judgment, take on new meaning.  She warns it can kill him.  The information possibly saves his life, as it persuades him to remove the Jewel when at the brink of death.  The lesson is bigger than that, however.  Corwin learns that power without knowledge or wisdom is dangerous and can be fatal, something which his brother Eric, as king, did not discover in time.
Journey:  It all begins with Corwin’s discovery of a crime and a corpse, which leads straight to his learning of Random’s attempt to rescue Brand from his tower.  And it ends with Corwin and Random, along with Ganelon, looking down upon the damaged Pattern (also the result of a crime, though they do not know that yet), just a day after Corwin’s meeting with a freshly rescued and recovered Brand.  Crimes call out for investigation and from the first pages of the first book Corwin has played the detective.  In the opening scene, Corwin has questions for Random and in the final scene he finally has some answers.  Now he knows from his interview with Brand that there was a conspiracy by the red-haired faction to seize Amber’s throne, that Dara is descended from Chaos and intended for that throne, that a game has been in progress where he has been but a useful knight and where the broken Pattern before him is the board upon which it has been played.

Watergate, Painful Endings...
...and Perhaps Resurrections — the Mid-’70s
“The sun was that great orb of molten gold we had seen earlier.  The sky was a deeper blue than that of Amber, and there were no clouds in it.  That sea was a matching blue, unspecked by sail or island.  I saw no birds, and I heard no sounds other than our own.  An enormous silence lay upon this place, this day.  In the bowl of my suddenly clear vision, the Pattern at last achieved its disposition upon the surface below.  I thought at first that it was inscribed in the rock, but as we drew nearer I saw that it was contained within it—gold-pink swirls, like veining in an exotic marble, natural-seeming despite the obvious purpose to the design… A dark, rough-edged smudge had obliterated an area of the section immediately beneath us, running from its outer rim to the center.”
Dark times are depicted in Sign of the Unicorn amidst the darkest days of the Seventies.  OPEC launches its oil embargo, soon doubling the price of crude, all just after the dollar has been devalued 10%.  A recession affecting most of the world ensues, and the oil crisis does not wind down until 1974.  Cults, destructive to themselves and often to others, appear in newspapers and on television.  The Manson Family is sentenced, the Symbionese Liberation Army abducts and brainwashes heiress Patty Hearst, the Heaven’s Gate UFO cult is founded near San Diego.
Violent groups on the radical left, however, are increasingly foiled and contained:  the Baader-Meinhof Red Army Faction is arrested; the Japanese Red Army, in decline after the Lod Airport attack, is defunct as an independent organization within a year of the attack; the Angry Brigade ends its run in a British courtroom.
At the same time, the political left makes gains:  Labour’s Harold Wilson returns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Helmut Schmidt of the Social Democratic Party becomes Chancellor of West Germany after a spy scandal brings down his predecessor; centrist Valéry Giscard d’Estaing succeeds Pompidou as President of France; the Carnation Revolution overthrows Portugal’s dictatorship and restores democracy; the Democratic Party logs historic victories in the House, Senate and state Governorships.  The Old Bailey sees the first woman serve as a judge, the U.S. Congress sends the ERA to the states for ratification, women are finally admitted to Dartmouth College, the FBI hires women as agents for the first time, equal pay for women is mandated in Australia — liberal politics enjoys a resurgence during this period.
Whether intentional or not, the revolutionary red-haired cabal of Amber mirrors the restless idealists of the times, violent and otherwise, hoping to institute change.  The overreach by forces on the right, responsible for the deaths of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King Jr., at last seems to come full circle with the resignation of Nixon and a national rejection of the authoritarian wielding of autocratic power.  As already suggested, the hubris Eric demonstrates (like Nixon) in crowning himself king and regularly resorting to the most dramatic powers of the Jewel of Judgment brings him to his death on the slopes of Kolvir.
Eric has died, yet while Corwin and Brand both tread recklessly close to death they instead return bearing valuable new information — and, in one case, an enchanted mechanical arm — introducing the theme of resurrection and restoration.  The Vietnam War at last is over, the crisis of the Nixon presidency has ended; the world is nowhere near out of the woods, but these events provide scope for respite and relief, and perhaps…hope?  Vietnam and Watergate have together represented a perpetual storm cloud over America, a weight upon the world.  The oil crisis has been harrowing, but soon leads directly to alternative energy R&D and long-needed improvements in automobiles.  The world is still beset with sweeping, deep-seated problems, and the clouds have not truly cleared, but rays of hope are breaking through to shine on both beautiful inspirations and stark realities, much as the brilliant sun of the real Amber illuminates the broken Pattern in the final scene of Sign of the Unicorn.
“‘Then—looking for congruence—that would be about where our own Pattern lies,’ [Random said as we regarded the oval area of smooth, level rock].
‘Yes,’ I said again.
‘And that blotted area is to the south, from whence comes the black road.’
I nodded slowly as the understanding arrived and forged itself into a certainty.
‘What does it mean?’ he asked.  ‘It seems to correspond to the true state of affairs, but beyond that I do not understand its significance.  Why have we been brought here and shown this thing?’
‘It does not correspond to the true state of affairs,’ I said.  ‘It is the true state of affairs.’”

Notre Dame cathedral survives fire, ‘saved and preserved’: officials
Notre Dame’s structure is saved, French authorities announced Monday night, close to four hours after a massive blaze broke out at the top of the historic Gothic cathedral.
“We can consider that the structure of Notre Dame has been saved and preserved,” said Paris fire brigade chief Jean-Claude Gallet, according to Agence France-Presse.
The 850-year-old building’s two main towers are also in the clear, Gallet added.
“The fire has lowered in intensity. We can say that the structure is saved, notably the northern belfry,” said Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, according to Le Figaro.
About two-thirds of the roof went up in smoke, as did the iconic spire, authorities said.
Pictures from inside the cathedral obtained by Reuters show fog and giant flames roaring. Another image shows firefighters gathered in a doorway as cinders rain down.

An investigation has been opened into how the blaze, which erupted at around 6:50 p.m. local time, began.

Shock, sadness, but no panic: Minutes that saved Notre Dame
PARIS (AP) — Fueled by a lattice of centuries-old timbers, the fire moved hungrily across Notre Dame’s rooftop toward the cathedral’s iconic spire. It belched yellow smoke, spitting out gritty particles of wood, stone, lead and iron and wanted more. Far below, their vision obscured by fumes and tears, firefighters, priests and municipal workers passed treasures hand-to-hand, hoping the speed of desperation could outrun the flames.
They had 66 minutes.
The first alarm sounded at 6:20 p.m., silencing the priest and a few hundred worshippers and tourists inside.
“Everyone was immobilized by shock for maybe a minute,” said Johann Vexo, who was in the organ loft for Monday Mass. Shock, but no panic. The rear doors opened and within a few minutes, the cathedral was empty, he told Ouest-France newspaper.
For 23 minutes, it seemed like a false alarm. Then at 6:43 p.m. a second smoke detector went off and the fire showed its face, flickering in the wooden timbers and visible to anyone looking north from Paris’ Left Bank.
The first firetrucks lumbered through rush-hour traffic, blasting their two-tone sirens at full volume to reach the island that is the historic and geographic heart of Paris. For that first half-hour, it looked like the fire couldn’t possibly leave more than a small age mark on the nearly 900-year-old building — more akin to the inevitable wear on stone’s rough edges than the fury of the French Revolution that left it in ruins for decades.
Across the Seine in City Hall, Mayor Anne Hidalgo glanced out the window during an evening meeting to see a yellow cloud blotting out the sky. She rushed to the island.
“I came here and felt powerless as the flames overtook the cathedral,” she said Tuesday.
Bridge after bridge along the Seine filled with somber onlookers, all facing the cathedral built for the ages. They dotted the stone walkways that line the river. They wept as flames overtook the rooftop spire.
Below it, nestled deep in the cathedral, was the treasure chest, keeper of Notre Dame’s most sacred relics.
Firefighters cracked the chest open, pulling out the Crown of Thorns revered as the one worn by Jesus Christ at his crucifixion. Made of rushes wrapped into a wreath and tied with gold filament, it had been kept under glass since 1896. The tunic of St. Louis, believed to have belonged to King Louis IX, came out of the chest along with fragments of the cross and a nail, said Patrick Chauvet, rector of Notre Dame Cathedral.
The relics were safe.
Then came the artwork.
“We had to get them, in the smoke, as debris was falling to protect them,” Gen. Jean-Claude Gallet of the fire brigade told BFM television.
At 7:49 p.m., the 19th-century spire that was the architectural masterpiece of Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc and his post-Revolutionary restoration broke apart and fell through the nave. The bronze weathercock tumbled, taking with it three relics sealed inside in 1935.
It had been 66 minutes since the first flames were spotted.
The sky above the cathedral flamed orange, and the fire lurched toward Notre Dame’s iconic towers, then slipped inside.
As darkness fell, 20 firefighters climbed inside the two towers “at great risk to their lives, to attack the fire from the inside and save the building,” said Laurent Nunez, deputy interior minister.
The spire was lost. Could Notre Dame itself be saved? From inside and out, firefighters fought the battle of their lives — a battle for the ages.
At 9:49 p.m. Nunez voiced the fear that haunted Paris and beyond. The smell of smoke had long since reached beyond the city center, permeating homes and apartments miles (kilometers) away. Sirens wailed ceaselessly. Hundreds of firefighters were doing their utmost. And, Nunez said, no one knew whether it would be enough.
The 20 firefighters struggled on in the towers. Red-hot embers floated down from the glowing hole where the spire once stood, settling on the blackened marble floor and the pile of debris that was all that was left of the spire. It had been “a masterwork of Viollet-le-Duc” and a tribute to what restoration could achieve, said Kevin Murphy, an expert on historical restoration from Vanderbilt University. It was gone, as were the roof’s irreplaceable ancient wooden beams, cut from trees that were alive a millennium ago.
At 11:23 p.m., the fire chief said the rest of the structure, including the cathedral’s twin bell towers, had been saved. It had been within 30 minutes of collapse.
It took 10 more hours for the last flames to be put out. The spire’s bronze rooster, long a symbol of France, was found Tuesday, deformed by the heat but recognizable nonetheless.
“Beyond emotion, beyond words, beyond tears,” Christophe Castaner, France’s interior minister, said Tuesday as he visited the cathedral, “What I want to express is the pride of the men and women who committed to saving Notre Dame.”

notre dame musical capital
A catastrophic fire engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday, altering the city's skyline and threatening a potent symbol of Catholicism at the start of Holy Week.
The fire burned for several hours, destroying the 850-year-old cathedral's iconic spire and roof before firefighters contained the blaze early Tuesday morning. A pair of bell towers immortalized in Victor Hugo's tale "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" survived, along with the cathedral's elaborate stonework facade. Officials said invaluable artifacts were saved, including the Crown of Thorns, believed to be a relic of the passion of Christ.     President Emmanuel Macron lamented the destruction of an awe-inspiring building that embodied the heart of Paris for more than 800 years. But he pledged to rebuild, starting with the launch of an international fundraising campaign.
"Notre Dame is our history, it's our literature, it's our imagery. It's the place where we live our greatest moments, from wars to pandemics to liberations," he said. "This history is ours. And it burns. It burns and I know the sadness so many of our fellow French feel."
See moment Notre Dame's spire falls 00:30At least one firefighter injuredThe Paris prosecutor opened an investigation into the fire, the cause of which is still unknown. The initial call to emergency services notified authorities of a fire in the attic of the cathedral, Paris Fire Brigade Commander General Jean-Claude Gallet said. The site was undergoing renovations and was surrounded by scaffolding.     Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to the scene, snarled by rush hour traffic. For much of the afternoon, flames and plumes of smoke billowed from the cathedral as firefighters in cranes sprayed water onto the structure. One firefighter was seriously injured, Gallet said.
The cathedral was undergoing renovation work, the fire service said.'Madness'The fire, just days before Easter, was met with horror by Parisians and tourists. As firefighters battled the blaze, Parisians gathered outside the church Monday night, raising their voices in prayer.

Thibaud Binétruy, who lives in Paris, said he saw the smoke while walking home. He was gripped by the sight of the falling spire, he said.People reacted with audible gasps, but "most of them were just shocked silently," he said. "It's awful to see such a symbol disappearing in front of you. It's been there for so many years and in a few minutes half of it disappeared ... crazy. "Paris without Notre Dame, madness."
Flames and smoke are seen billowing from the roof at Notre-Dame Cathedral.American tourist Jason Hinman was visiting a garden when he saw smoke in the air. "We planned to leave the area, but eventually all the roads were blocked. It was clear the city had just stopped," he said.

Still new to FFXIV lore, and looking to spread my wings a bit in the community; though I’ll try to stick to it within reason. In a private RP setting I’m willing to do some lore breaking with explanation!
Themes: Will RP most anything with the exception of rape and death.

Ahoy Map Maker - how do I download the app on PC? If you want to download the software on your pc or mac, you could either first visit the Mac store or Windows AppStore and search for the app OR you can easily use any of the download links we provided above under the 'Download and Install' header section to download the application. Ahoy Map Maker is designed to help users create routes for trips and share the map representation with the other participants in no time. The Ahoy Map Maker app comes with a world map that you can explore by using your mouse, and a couple of simple tools for making annotations.
Navigate the world map and find the area that attracts you for the next trip
The central area in the Ahoy Map Maker main window is reserved for a map view where you get to navigate to different parts of the world. Even though the map comes with a 3D button, during our tests the function could not be activated.
Nonetheless, you can choose to see the world map representation in satellite, standard, or hybrid mode.

Noteworthy is that you can control the map only with your mouse: just move the pointer to the area of interest and zoom in or out by using the scroll button, or with the help of the small buttons placed in the bottom right corner of the map.
However, you cannot move around the map by using drag and drop actions which seems to be the intuitive approach.
Plan your trips and make annotations on the map with the help of simple tools
Within the Ahoy Map Maker map viewer you can set placemarks to highlight a point of interest, create paths that include multiple locations, mark regions of interest by using a circle or a freehand tool, or make text annotations.
Note that each element comes with its own customization options, going from color adjustment to opacity level, dash size, line width, description, image, placement, and so on. You can share the plan with others by capturing the map region that includes all the details and exporting the image to a JPG file.
Create routes for your future trips and share your plans with others
Ahoy Map Maker brings to the table a streamlined solution for quickly making trip plans and sharing your ideas with others. You get to either create JPG images that include the details or save your projects using the proprietary file format.
On the other hand, during our tests, the Ahoy Map Maker application became unresponsive at times and switching between tools was problematic (if you encounter any issues, try pressing the 3D button and the pointer should return to normal).

Preface: What was different from the Minneapolis Riots Report?
Sources:
Unlike our report on Mapping Minneapolis Riot Damage, there were no concise lists of individual property damage. The main source for this report was Live UA Map Timeline Aug 24 – Sept 04 2020. Stories listed were from Twitter and elsewhere, most of which referred to multiple and sometimes duplicate instances of the same event. There were only a handful of individual property damage reports. Consequently, there can be no assurance that the data we used are accurate or complete.

If you have detailed Kenosha riot damage information, we ask that subscribers post at Subscriber Input at Solari.com. If you are not a subscriber, please send your riot damage info to [email protected]. As always, we invite your input.
Law Enforcement Response:
The police and National Guard made their presence known. Barricades were erected, arrests were made, and there were serious efforts made to restore order (something that was totally lacking in Minneapolis). However, more disturbing events occurred:

Occupied family residences were broken into.
Partisan gun fights occurred and casualties were produced.
Partisan street fights occurred and casualties were produced.
In spite of the combined efforts of Kenosha PD and a WI Army National Guard Brigade (~2000 troops), millions of dollars in property damages were incurred.
Damage Statistics:
See “Emergency Services Stats Kenosha August 23rd-Sep 3rd” (section below the maps).
What was the same?
Note that most of the destruction appears to have been caused within an “Opportunity Zone.” Verification underway.
