After experimenting with fisheye lens and taking an array of skate shots at my local skate park, I settled on my six favorite photos from the collection. I played around with filters such as contrast and saturation to see which ones best suited what I wanted. These shots were the six I would choose from to be my final piece and to create into my skate fashion magazine cover.
Continuing to work on the skate park area. Exploring the people and culture that surrounds the park. Trying an oval shaped fisheye. Also did a study of tagging/graffiti lettering and symbols.
Another one from my sketchbook, made last year (2022), but there's a story behind this one:
I was looking for fisheye photos of people skating (because imo the combination looks really cool) to use as reference for an illustration, when I came across a photo of this girl (6 year old Bella at the time) who is part of the Pink Helmet Posse (@/pinkhelmetposse on instagram), which started as a group of 3 young girls who share a passion for skating: Sierra Kerr, Relz Murphy and Bella Kenworthy. After that photo, I found a NYT article and the 2013 doc / short film that celebrates them: "Gnarly in Pink" (which you can watch on YouTube).
So, the photo wasn't taken with a fisheye effect, but it looked amazing nonetheless and after knowing the context, I just had to draw that photo of Bella.
