#popashcreekpreserve - Found nestled in a rural, somewhat hard to find area and situated in NE #LeeCounty, the preserve was awarded 2 trophies: #10 for Top rated Park in North Fort Myers & #4 for Hidden Gems - The park is in located in #northfortmyers and consists of over 307 acres with over six miles of hiking and equestrian trails and is currently maintenanced by the county and continues water treatments to this day. Part of the Conservation 20/20 Program, established in 1996 by voters passing a referendum, property owners to purchase environmentally sensitive land for conservation and ecosystem protection, are taxed. Purchased for just over $1.5m in the summer of 2003, the county, and the Dept. of Natural Resources reshaped the surfaces by creating a filter marsh, utilizing ponds already onsite and created a more natural wetland and dry prairie environment, but also reduces flooding in the adjacent watersheds and removes nutrients from the water, protecting neighborhoods nearby, but also consisting of other preserves and large tracts of land, which help to move rain and slow moving water, southward, in a natural direction. There’s dry areas (mesic) and wet areas (hydric) with resident wildlife as American alligators, river otters, blue herons, turtles, wading birds and many others. Prior to the state’s transformation, the land had seen hydrologic modifications and land uses such as soil & rock mining, agriculture and roads for moving cars through neighborhoods. According to historians, this is when the formal establishment occurred and was sponsored by the United Methodist Church. However, this wasn’t the end of moves or name changes. In 1901, the #college relocated once again, this time to #palmharbor which was named Sutherland then and in 1906 changed their name to Southern College. In the 1920’s fires caused a temporary relocation, this time to #clearwaterbeach Beach and finally made #lakeland its final home in 1922 with a final change in their current name in 1935 chosen by the board of trustees. #fsc holds the title as the oldest #4year #privatecollege in #florida and is also home of the world's largest, single-site collection of #franklloydwright architecture. #fortlonesome (and man is it lonesome lmao desolate) found roughly 36 miles from Tampa in the #rural southeastern region of #hillsboroughcounty and is primarily an area used for farming #history — Once upon a time, in the early 1930’s, a sawmill very briefly revived Dort Lonesome, along with a few houses and about three stores. Unfortunately, that was short lived glory for the area, as a fire destroyed the mill. “The Hometown of Tomorrow” This is the #entrance or perhaps, main entrance, to #babcockranch - in 2016, Florida Power & Light broke ground in the Babcock Ranch Reserve area, building a planned community, which spans over approximately 17,000 acres, located in southeast #charlottecounty and northeast #leecounty #florida and created an on-site, 75-megawatt solar photovoltaic array, which currently and will, occupy rooftops and will / does cover the city, as well as upwards 400 acres of land, offering a network of solar rooftop arrays on commercial buildings, resulting in the generation of more energy than the city consumes. Babcock Ranch's solar power plant connects to the #maingrid providing consistent #energysupply . This gives ability to maintain through importing power on overcast days and exporting it on sunny days. The city’s objective in using a #solargenerator not just to power the city, yet also reduce carbon emissions and oil dependence. Combined with the proposed #smarthometechnology energy efficiency is created, then resulting in lower energy bills for residents. Residents and businesses currently and will utilize smart grid technology, allowing them to monitor and controll their energy consumption.
