Even though he had stared at the stanza for what felt like hours, Elze’ith still couldn’t make the words sink in. All he had wanted was to read something to help settle his mind before he tried to sleep. It seemed he couldn’t even manage that, though, despite the fact that the poems were from an author he knew well, one that he selected for their familiarity and ease of understanding. The gently cascading words just weren’t enough to drown out the echoes of Lord Denholm’s voice in his head, the feeling of his hands on him, the sensation of him inside—!

A shudder rippled through him. Even hours later, he couldn’t quite manage to soothe himself. Maybe it was just too much to process, too much to bear. Or maybe he was just too weak, too much of a failure to even settle himself after dealing with the consequences of his own mistake. Either way, he felt so empty and so dreadful and so tainted, and he didn’t know what to do about it. None of his normal relaxation methods were actually doing anything to help quell the turmoil he still felt.

He needed something more. He needed comfort, as loathe as he was to admit it.He needed to know he wasn’t as alone as he felt.

He needed—

In a quick motion, Elze’ith closed his poetry book and set it aside. Conversely, his hands were slow and careful as he reached for the cup of water on his bedside table; he didn’t want the contents to jostle or spill. In the soft candlelight that filled his room, he could see his reflection faintly rippling across the water’s surface.

He didn’t give himself time to think, didn’t give himself time to doubt. Just summoned his magic, focused on the resplendent and kindhearted core of Altair, and cast.

The spell made contact. Hope surged in Elze’ith’s chest. Altair was still out there. It had been ages, but maybe, maybe this time, Altair would answer.

“Please,” he murmured, hoping beyond hope for this to work. “Please, Altair, my love. Please, respond. I can’t do this alone. I need you. I need to hear your voice. I need—“

“My light?”

The door opened softly, but the sound was as loud as thunder in the quiet of Elze’ith’s chambers. Elze’ith dropped his cup like he had been burned, watching as the ceramic shattered and the water splashed across the stone floor. Heart in his throat, he looked up to see Lord Denholm, already closing the door behind him and with a pensive expression on his face.

“Is everything alright? I did not mean to startle you, light.”

There was no anger coming through Lord Denholm’s aura, but Elze’ith still felt distinctly like he had been caught doing something he shouldn’t. And maybe he had, after how Lord Denholm had reacted the last time he tried to reach out to Altair.

(But that was because he had lied—)

It didn’t matter. The spell was broken, his conduit destroyed by his own hand once again. There would be no contacting Altair; he wouldn’t even be able to know if Altair would have responded tonight. He stared down at his lap, heart heavy with something like shame and something like grief. “I am fine, Milord. You need not worry about me.”

“Good.” Suddenly, Lord Denholm was in front of him. “I wanted to check on you; I know today was… difficult for you. I see I was right to do so.” He waved his hand; the water evaporated, and the shards of ceramic were whisked off into Elze’ith’s wastebasket.

Elze’ith felt sick. He felt hollow. “Thank you, Milord.”

“I will send for a light meal. I think it will do you good. Shall I keep you company in the meantime?”

After all that had happened, he really just wanted a bit of space from Lord Denholm. But he didn’t want to be alone. And he knew better than to say no. “Of course.”

It was just hard not to wish it was someone else’s hand that reached out for his.

Altair woke with a start.

He had always been a light sleeper, even moreso after Elze’ith had been taken to Castle Tergoria and he had been left alone. The smallest disturbances would wake him and spur him into action. But even in his deepest of slumbers, he would have been waken up by this, would have found himself leaping out of bed before he even realized he was moving. Because he knew that soft tapping at the back of his mind, that gentle tug on his consciousness.

Elze’ith was calling out for him again. And now, there was no one to stop him from answering.

The cottage was dark, with barely any light from the moon or stars streaming in. That barely hindered Altair as he fervently starting rifling through his belongings, searching for something that could facilitate the connection that Elze’ith was trying to make. He silently cursed the fact that they didn’t have any mirrors, because of course this couldn’t be easy. He just had to find—

There was nothing in his bag, maybe if he—

Their plates were wooden, and he didn’t have enough water to fill them—

It was too dark, he couldn’t make out his reflection on the glass window—

His hand closed around the hilt of his dagger. Realization and hope burst in his chest, and he frantically unsheathed it. The blade was meticulously cared for, the metal polished, the surface reflective. All he needed was—

The thread of connection severed. For a moment, Altair just blinked, stunned. It had been less than a minute; how could he have already have missed his chance? Frantically, he lit a small flame in the palm of his hand, as if creating enough light so that he could see his reflection in the dagger’s blade would be enough to reestablish the connection he knew had been lost. All he saw was his own desperate face.

“Fuck.”

He crumpled. He was barely aware of how his knees hit the floor, barely heard the dagger clatter on the wood beneath him. Heartache and sorrow and regret had completely overtaken him. He had a chance to speak with his partner, to hear Elze’ith’s voice, and now it was gone. Elze’ith had reached out for him again, and he had been too slow. And with the strange hour, and especially withhow short the call had been, it was all-too-likely that something had happened to his beloved. Altair was sick with dread and guilt just thinking of the possibilities. If only—

He never should have let Elze’ith go. Never should have agreed to any of this. It wasn’t worth it. None of this was worth enduring.

“Please,” he whispered, a quiet prayer. “Don’t give up. Don’t disappear. I need you, Elze’ith. Please.”

It took a long moment for him to collect himself. He kept staring at the discarded dagger like Elze’ith’s face might somehow appear in it. Kept shaking with emotion, trying to blink back tears. But eventually, he calmed. He stood. He picked up the dagger, and took it with him as he sat down in one of the chairs.

Slowly moving his hand, he lit the fireplace, then settled back, all but cradling the dagger in his hands. Maybe, just maybe, Elze’ith would try the spell again. And if he did, Altair would be ready. He wouldn’t miss his opportunity again.

Hours later, the sun rose on a silent cottage, and Altair was still alone.

I feel I missed a step somewhere. I loved the finale but during my rewatch how'd Michael go from thinking him and Alex weren't good for one another to feeling hopeful about them again despite having spent the better part of a year ignoring their past and being in a relationship with someone else? I can't quite grasp how we went from zero to that? Help! What did I miss?

Ok anon. Good question. Phew. (I haven’t started doing character arc metas post finale yet because I really haven’t had the brainpower, shoutout to the Isobel person from way back I will get to it!) But ok. I have done a few things from a mid-season standpoint that will help. I’ll dump a few of them in a row and then connect the dots.

First of all, this one discusses how Alex and Michael really were unhealthy for each other in a lot of ways despite there being a lot of love there as well, and this one is about the teen scene in the truck which partially illustrates the start of that problem. This one is about the scene in 2x02 which I think of as a followup to “not good for each other” in 2x01 about how just because Michael is stepping away doesn’t mean it’s easy for him. And this one and this one are two that address Alex’s progress, the first about when he gives Michael the ship piece and the second in the aftermath of 2x06.

So anon, my thoughts are these:

- Michael and Alex’s relationship was built on a fundamentally rotten foundation. It’s not something that was EITHER of their faults but it was true nonetheless. It was a result of both of their trauma, separately and together, but what it lead to was an extremely unhealthy relationship dynamic. Again, this was not something that either one did deliberately but it doesn’t mean they weren’t getting hurt. Both were trying to be with the teenage version of the other person that they originally fell for, and when they couldn’t be that for the other person it fell apart. Every time. There was also a lot of self-depreciation and self-flagellation going on and that’s not good for anyone. What Michael and Alex need to do if they are going to have a healthy relationship is to raze what they have to the ground and start with a completely clean slate.

- “I don’t think we’re good for each other” is Michael acknowledging the fact that their relationship is unhealthy (”lately that love just hurts” from 1x13 was recognizing it) and “I’m saying ‘no’” is Michael taking the step back he knows he needs to. That was HARD for him, really really hard, but it absolutely was necessary.

- Alex isn’t in the same place as Michael though, so he takes a few more steps to get to where Michael was in 2x01. The first was when he gave Michael the ship piece back, it was at that point he acknowledged that their relationship was unhealthy. But he’s still not at the same level Michael is, he’s blaming himself.

- It’s not until 2x06 where we finally see both of them at a clean slate. “I used to think we’d end up together.” “So did I.” Is acknowledging that both of them were holding on to an unrealistic image of a relationship that was ended the night of Rosa’s death, for a number of reasons. Now that they’ve both accepted that the relationship they were both TRYING to have is not possible, the slate is officially clean and they finally have good, level ground to start building on in the future.

- A last note, Michael and Alex LITERALLY destroying the shed that symbolized the original start of their doomed first relationship is a pretty heavy-handed visual representation of their arc as well as a very satisfying trauma catharsis I’M JUST SAYING.

So anon, Michael wasn’t ignoring his relationship with Alex. He removed himself from an unhealthy situation and focused on healing, which was accomplished partially with Maria’s support (which was NOT her only “function” and I have a meta on her and her arc and how that lead to their breakup as soon as I get the braincells for it) and partially with his role in bringing Max back that lead to him having a small breakthrough about leaning on other people and trusting them to catch him. He has “hope” at the end of the season because it’s now obvious that Alex is also out of that unhealthy place and if they were to try something now they have a much better chance of success.

He likely stepped back though, because he recognizes that Alex is in a pretty raw place; this is new and falling back in with old partners is not necessarily the best option. Alex needs a chance to find out who he is under the scab, and Michael is giving him that opportunity. So WE SHALL SEE ANON, WE SHALL SEE.

Not that Jane is complaining about watching the repairs. But she wasn't expecting Loki to be haunting the palace library, even in psychiatric care; and Loki wasn't expecting to make friends with Thor's mortal girlfriend. Rec: If you’re looking for a good, long Jane-centric fic that also features endgame fosterson, a well written Loki, and really interesting take on Asgardian culture, this is the fic for you. | 107k | Complete

Five Times Jane Was Kinda Jealous And One Time Thor Was by shinyopals: ‘Hello, Jane,’ said Thor. He gave her a smile that would move mountains and definitely still made her stomach flutter. ‘This is Rachael and Amanda. They wished to give their regards for my help during the Convergence. Although of course without you we would have been hopeless.’ He turned back to Rachael and Amanda. ‘This is my dear friend Dr Jane Foster, of whom I was speaking.’ Dear friend? Jane blinked. They’d been sleeping together for a couple of weeks and had had a slightly awkward conversation to establish where they stood with each other (what Jane called dating exclusively and Thor called a courtship). “Friend”, however “dear”, seemed a bit of an understatement. Sometimes dating a gorgeous world-saving alien prince has its drawbacks. Rec: BURY ME AND HAVE THIS JEALOUSY FIC PRINTED ON MY TOMBSTONE. If You Want To Live series by hariboo: They lost Loki when they sunk Manhattan. Three years laters Loki finds them and that’s really when everything begins. This is that beginning. Rec: Terminator fusion AU that you didn’t realize you needed until now. Knowledge of the Terminator films is helpful but not required. The 'needing each other’ that comes along with a desperate post-apocalyptic situation really lends itself well to fosterson. It also hurts a hell of a lot. I wish it wasn’t finished. | 5k | Complete

Fabulous Baking Sisters or How to (not) Get Over A Norse God in 730 Days by Rozilla: After seeing Jane in a slump one too many times, Darcy decides to get her into stress baking… and soon regrets it. The Obloquy of Newness by Niobium: Jane just wants to present her findings and maybe win a Nobel Prize. That would be a lot easier if all these xenophobes, science deniers, and robots bent on world destruction would stop getting in the way. Or, Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis, and what they were up to before, during, and after Avengers: Age of Ultron. Rec: A really delightful companion to AOU. | 17.4k | Complete

Pendulum: Between by hariboo: Having found each other again doesn’t mean things have gotten easier for Thor and Jane. In some ways things are only getting more complicated. Most couples go a little crazy when they’re ecstatically happy, unfortunately for these two going crazy involves knocking a hole in spacetime and marooning themselves and two of Jane’s friends on a desolate and dangerous planet halfway across the galaxy. Meanwhile Darcy, Sif and Bill are trying to find them in Skuttlebutt. Will they survive? Will they make it to the wedding in time? Will Thor’s attempts to communicate with Groot drive everyone crazy? Will Darcy get to witness Jane’s brief Goth phase? Will Jane’s friend Sayed get over his Star-Trek inspired fantasies about green-skinned alien women? Welcome to the Fall by Niobium: The Avengers pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Sokovia. Inter- and post-film gap-fillers and ficlets, with varying POV characters. A couple of them are slightly canon divergent and will be labeled as such. Rec: A really solid piece of prose, careful of canon while building upon it/improving it. The fosterson is handled really well. | 5.5k | Complete

The House of Foster by ArticulatioHumeri: She had set out to study wormholes. Never would Jane Foster have thought that it would lay the foundations of a family clan. Rec: Great fosterson moments, and with proper time devoted to them. A good, long read. Probably the longest fic I have on this list, and the longest Marvel fic that actually legitimately features Fosterson prominently. | 224k | Complete

The Measure of a Man by fayedartmouth: Thor is banished to Earth. Reclaiming his worth is harder than he thinks it will be. AU of the movie Thor. Rec: By now, y’all know I love fics where Thor was on Earth longer than in canon. Or, The continuing adventures of Jane Foster, from the end of Thor: The Dark World to just after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Rec: What it says on the tin. I highly recommend reading anything by this author. Both Jane and Thor are done justice to, beautifully. Lots of cutesy Fosterson that feels very real and not just like a fangirl threw up on a page. Fundamental Forces by nayanroo: In an attempt to rein in the son that remains to her after Thor’s banishment, Frigga arranges a marriage between two old friends in the hopes that they can work together to heal an eroded realm. On Earth, a prince searches for identity after his world is turned upside-down. And in the darkness, something stirs. Rec: mostly a Loki/Sif pairing story, but there is enough fosterson to give a rec. Even if it wasn’t, I’d still rec it somewhere else. One of the most well-thought out stories I’ve read (part of an amazing series, which contains gratuitous fosterson) with incredible characterizations. Rec: An amazing look at Thor and Jane post-Dark World building their relationship, as well as all the pitfalls and heartache that comes with that. This author really plunges their hands into the nitty gritty problems with Jane and Thor, their cultural differences, their age/lifespan difference, and so on, yet it is still clear how much they love each other and their determination to make it work. | Contains some smut, but nothing very explicit | 92.5k | Complete

Symbiosis: Part II by SteeleHoltingOn: Loki ascends the throne of Jotunheim. He might have been lonely, but for the little hitchhiker in his head. Thor and Jane have their hands full with their daughter, Val, and the demands of Asgard and the Nine Realms. Rec: A lot of Loki, but also copious amounts of married Fosterson. As someone who isn’t always Loki’s biggest fan, especially when it comes to fan portrayals, I can say that this one is very true to canon and is an incredibly interesting read, and is balanced well with Jane and Thor-ness. The political drama is done very well. The plot planning seems meticulous and is absolutely admirable. I still have the same praise for it as its predecessor. | Contains some smut | 41.4k | Complete

Terrestrial Constellations by NightOwl360: For Jane and Darcy bringing Thor back to Earth is only the beginning of the adventure. Relationships are never easy, the past is always just a step behind, and sometimes the people we know best have the biggest secrets. Rec: Great characterization of Jane and Thor, and fabulous buildup until they meet again. Packed with not just fluff, some inevitable angst, as well as an intriguing storyline. Only downside: I’m pretty sure it’s been abandoned, and on a hell of a cliff hanger. | 78k | In progress, possibly abandoned

The Poetic Edda (was almost entirely wrong) by PhoenixVictoria: In Which: Thor is from a warrior culture (and Jane Foster understands); Loki is badass (but also kind of a puppy); Thor grows a pair and fixes his mistakes (and is a good brother); Loki is a slut (and is a good brother when he has no knives); Darcy Lewis is The Geek Whisperer (which really turns Loki on); And the Odinsons have no idea how to act in front of the media (and wouldn’t care if they did.) Rec: Almost entirely for Thor. He is so well-written in this. Loki and Thor fixing the damage they’ve done, and Jane being a great person. I love this so far (it is a WIP). One and the Same Thing by MissChrisDaae: Jane Foster is born to the bloodline of the Alchemysts, and the first woman to be inducted into the order. After the murder of her mentor, Jane becomes the first Alchemyst to mix the study of alchemy with that of magic, trying to enhance the art and find a way to avenge him. This is seen as bastardizing the craft, and she is cast out of the order, still working her craft as she wanders the realm. Forbidden from using the title of Alchemyst, Jane instead calls herself Ástkona Óþekktur, a Mistress of the Unknown. On her travels, she picks up an apprentice in Darcy Lewis and the two women meet another very unusual pair: the crown prince, Thor, and his foster brother, Loki, on the run from Amora, the sorceress who murdered Thor’s father and usurped the throne, the same woman who killed Jane’s teacher. Finding common ground, the four agree to join forces in taking down the Enchantress. Even if Jane won’t admit it, she finds herself drawn to the older prince, and Thor seems to be returning her affections, much to the annoyance of Loki, who sees the Ástkona Óþekktur as an unneeded distraction from what matters. If they win the war, there may still be something left to lose. Rec: You can see by the description that this is way AU. Incredibly imaginative, with a good characterization of Jane. | 33k | Complete

The Salt Skin by hariboo: One day Sif walks to the edge of the Bifrost to see compelled to see where Loki had fallen. At the same time Jane is testing a way to open the Bifrost. By accident Sif falls to Earth, what happens after she never would have expected, and then she finds Loki. Post-film. Rec: I can’t believe I haven’t recced this yet. A long, Sif-centric fic that is respectful to fosterson is hard to find, but this one hits all my must haves. Jane and Thor are beautiful idiots, and the outside view of their relationship is great. Very well-written. Loki/Sif is also very prominently featured. | 44.4k | Complete

Off The Grid by Shawn30: As stated by Phil Coulson in 'Agents of Shield’ episode 1-15, "Thor is currently off the grid.” So the question is, where are Thor, Jane, Darcy, and Eric post 'The Dark World’? Rec: This person was one of my FAVORITE fic authors of all time because of their Star Wars fics, and then THEY WRITE A FOSTERSON STORY. I was over the damn moon. There’s a unique take of all the characters, and there’s promise of really great things coming from this story. This fic would be a wise investment. Only problem is that sometimes their fics have very slow updates. Contains some smut | 15k | In progress, possibly abandoned

Lost in a World Full of Terrors by psychollama: Inspired by typhoidcandy - “After Darcy attempts to perform one of Loki’s spells, things go awry and she’s sent to another universe. In this medieval-like universe, Loki is King, Thor is banished and living in the forests, and Jane is an arrow wielding rebel. Can Darcy make it home before the real Loki finds out what she did? Or before medieval Loki captures her and either kills her or makes her his slave?” Rec: A different take on a medieval AU. The first and only chapter is very fosterson-centric, and sets up the action nicely. Jane and Thor are handled very well in the different context. Stop All The Clocks series by Della19: Rec: NOT fosterson centric. This series is, I think, the first thing I read on AO3, and I was blown away. This person has constructed a great world around Supersoldier!Peggy Carter, and I rec the whole series, as the world and the characters are all vibrant and well-rounded. The stories, while connected, can easily be read as standalones. The fosterson, when it’s a larger focus, is absolutely lovely. | 49k | In progress

Jane and Thor’s ups and downs as a couple are well written, and if you’re a sucker for married Fosterson, check this one out. | 79k | Complete

On the Outside by Simple.White.Lie: The King and Queen of Asgard are not prepared for the dish Fate has served for them. To be tossed out like a ship in the wind is more than their hearts can take. Their love is something to fight for.. Isn’t it? Rec: Sequel to For The Days Inbetween (recced above). Both stories feature a very strong Jane, which is a big plus. Again, while the writing isn’t always stellar, it is a worthwhile read. | 33k | Complete

Thor Pwns Walmart by charis2770: Jane and Thor have found a way to be together at last. It’s all she could have wished for, and then some. But it’s playing heck on her worldly possessions! Jane takes Thor shopping at Wal Mart so she can replace all the things which have been torn or broken during their reunion. And buy more pop tarts. This turns out to be an adventure. And hotter than you might think. Rec: Okay, holy high heavens this story is well done. The author does BDSM amazingly, and I recommend their other stories, too. Mind the warnings. Also, if BDSM isn’t your thing, I still recommend the bits in between the smut because it is hilarious and perfect. | 35k | Complete

Stealing Away by charis2770: This is what happens when the Black Widow puts herself in charge of planning a weekend getaway for four friends, three of whom happen to be Super Heroes, and one of whom has an unfortunate tendency to be a little hard on Midgardian buildings. Rec: a continuation of Thor Pwns Walmart, and also features a good deal of BDSM Clint/Natasha. This author remains a good example of how to properly write good BDSM. Mind the warnings. Also, if BDSM isn’t your thing, I still recommend the bits in between the smut because it is hilarious and perfect. | 30.4k | Complete

I'm kinda afraid to ask, but what was the panel that made you hate Ennis so much?

Ugh. So, dunno how long you’ve been following me, but three things that you probably know about me because I am the least subtle person that ever lived and also once I find a point to harp on about I hammer that point over and over until that point is dead and extinct and then I go to necromancy school, learn how to resurrect that point and do it all over again.

Hey, I’m a work in progress, ok?

But yeah. 1) Kyle Rayner is one of my three favorite superheroes and I identify with him and project on him way more than is probably healthy because what is moderation even. 2) I have absolutely zero chill when it comes to how rape is treated and handled by media and entertainment, and the quickest way to get me to hate your guts is making a joke of it or not treat it seriously. 3) Number two, repeated, but with emphasis.

Mix that together, with some additional rage because racist stereotypes and also DC’s track record with rape in their comics in general, and I have super strong feelings on the otherwise forgettable miniseries that was the JLA/Hitman crossover.

So first off, Ennis created this parody character. For lack of a better word. No idea who or what he’s meant to be a parody of or what the hell Ennis was aiming for in general (if he was aiming for anything at all, I mean, his brand is basically being offensive is fun, yay). I mean, I guess you could call him a joke character, maybe, except there’s nothing remotely funny about him…look, idk. He’s disgusting, everything about this character is disgusting.

His name’s Bueno Excellente and here’s the summary of his character they have on comicvine, copied and pasted word for word. Its completely accurate based on what I remember of his appearances. I give this character summary alone trigger warnings for anti-latine racism, fatphobia, sexual assault and rape. Which says a lot right there.

And I’m not even slightly joking about these trigger warnings. Take them seriously in regards to whether or not you even want to know.

“Bueno Excellente is a pervert and more than likely a dangerous sadist who just so happens to be a member of a superhero team in the DC Universe, Section 8. The team consists of a bunch of delusional superhero wannabes and Bueno, who is just sort of there.Bueno Excellente fights evil with the powers of perversion. How exactly this works in a non-Vertigo/DC property is never exactly made clear. The audience gets glimpses and their minds must do the rest.Bueno is an overweight, constantly sweating hispanic male who only ever says “Excellente!” or “Bueno”, which is usually preceeded with a chuckle. At one team meeting, one of his fellow teammates yells at him to stop poking him under the table, while Bueno’s hands are both clearly shown to be folded neatly above the table; which just makes one wonder what exactly is happening and feel dirty.In combat, Bueno is typically shown just appearing behind an enemy when they aren’t paying attention. He says one or the other of his words and the “camera” cuts away with a scream sound effect. After one such instance, we later see the headline of a Gotham City newspaper that the person Bueno had snuck up behind had essentially been fatally sodomized, in the craftiest, most family friendly terms they could get this message across in within a non-Vertigo/ DC publication.”

Yeah. So that’s a character that actually exists, thanks to Ennis. I mean, I’d hate him on that alone (and I do), but then you’ve got JLA/Hitman #1, where he takes it one step further, with this throwaway panel.

And this is the crossover where Ennis uses his awesome little caricature character, so this is 100% a deliberate reference to an encounter with Bueno Excellente, by the creator of said character.

So yeah, thanks to a story that will never be referenced again but still very much exists, there’s canon of Kyle being a rape survivor by virtue of being drugged and assaulted by a character whose sole reason for existing is to…rape people. Because, why not, apparently.

Its absolutely a throwaway ‘joke’ that isn’t meant to be treated seriously, but that doesn’t make it better IMO, it makes it worse. There’s absolutely no reason any of this needed to exist, I have no clue WHAT the fuck it exists for, beyond Ennis thinking it was funny I guess? Because again…why? Who fucking knows.

But yeah, everything about it is gross, and it really doesn’t even have anything to do with it being Kyle in specific, I’d hate it just as much no matter what character was used there. But because he is a favorite character and I’ve read pretty much everything he’s in, this particular little goody springs to mind far more often than it probably would if it had been a character I don’t have strong associations for in my head, with it at least potentially being able to slip out of sight, out of mind for me over time. But because its one of my all time faves and I do have good recall for stuff involving characters I really like and emotionally invest in, there’s no avoiding this ‘joke’ even though it always pisses me off all over again to remember it happened.

Not to mention the fact that BECAUSE it was such a stupid random crossover that nobody ever bothered acknowledging after the fact, there’s the additional awareness of the fact that this thing that just…exists, will never again be referenced and thus never given the proper attention and serious scrutiny I strongly feel any instance of writing a character as having been raped actually deserves. And that bothers me. A LOT. Like this nagging itch that’ll never be scratched.

Like, I don’t want to fucking read about characters being raped just because. If you do that to a character, it DAMN well better be because you’re focused on writing the aftermath, the recovery, the part where it isn’t just a thing that happened, its a thing that the person it happened to has to live with, and always will. If that’s not why you’re writing it, I just really fucking wish you wouldn’t.

And it reeeeeally doesn’t help that thanks to this one little fucking panel, ALL THREE of my all time favorite superheroes, the heroes I identify with more than any other and have been emotionally invested in since I was a kid, more than just about any other fictional characters period…..thanks to this panel, ALL THREE of those heroes, Kyle Rayner, Dick Grayson and Bobby Drake, have all been raped in canon stories. With the further commonality between ALL THREE being that not a single one of those instances has ever actually been acknowledged for what they are, by anyone in canon.

And thus all three will never see any followup, aftermath, or any actual STORY about what this having happened to each of these characters actually means, how did it affect them, how did they deal. Those events are just things that happened and then on with the rest of the story as if nothing had just happened, nothing worth mentioning anyway, no need for anyone either in story or out of story to acknowledge what those events actually were and actually like….do something about that.

And that really, REALLY pisses me off and always will.

Just one more reason why I feel so strongly about creator responsibility.

This shit MATTERS. It may not matter to you, the writer, but that doesn’t mean its not gonna matter to your readers, and if you’re gonna be the one to decide hey, this story needs this to happen for whatever reason, this is something that readers need to read happening and be impacted by in whatever ways they end up impacted…then you damn well better be the one to treat that thing you wrote with the gravitas it deserves.

You don’t get to decide it matters enough to be worth MAKING IT HAPPEN only to then turn around and decide it just doesn’t matter enough for there to be a reason why you felt it needed to.

Something I realized today about a certain League of Villains member.

Spoilers/ Long post beneath the cut. Read at your own caution!

I'll shoot straight- when Spinner first showed up in the mange, I wasn't very fond of him. Stain had just recently blown my mind as an incredible villain, and Dabi had already presented himself as a very cool self-proclaimed successor to his twisted ideology. So when an overly dramatic lizardman showed up with a bunch of knives and goofy cosplay of Stain's excellently designed outfit, I was skeptical. While his fight alongside Magne was comically successful and interesting in the interactions between him and Mandalay, it didn't feel like a good followup to the incredible presence of Stain. It felt like a parody, a twisting of everything I had loved about the Hero Killer. Spinner was... goofy. I didn't like it.

But despite that, Spinner has been slowly growing on me in the past weeks. I wasn't sure why until today, just passing it off as a growing affection for the League in general. But after watching a video about how Stain's ideology has been twisted, it sorta clicked. Spinner isn't here to be Stain's successor, he's an embodiment of how Stain's message has been warped in the aftermath of his defeat. The important thing about Spinner isn't how he's similar to Stain, it's how, despite his best efforts, he isn't. Stain was a streamlined, trained, practiced vehicle for his beliefs to be carved onto the world, well-prepared and knowledgeable in his bloody crusade. Spinner is a fanboy trying and failing to be like his idol; rushing into conflicts against heroes with an obvious lack of training or experience. Where Stain acts decisively and efficiently to maximize his odds in battle, Spinner waves his big wacky sword around like a child holding a toy. While Stain talks about his message when he has the upper hand and therefore enough breathing room to say what he's thinking, Spinner tries to lecture everyone around him in the middle of battle and gets kicked in the face for it, then starts screaming obscenities and slurs when his opponent won't "just get purged already". Their differences even come down to resolve- Stain's focused and tactically aware while Spinner is easily distracted and intimidated. Stain is well-versed in how heroes work, Spinner is completely caught off-guard by the presence and effectiveness of top heroes (Chapter 88 Page 1).

It even comes down to their designs- Stain's outfit is as tactically sound as it is terrifying. All his weapons are immediately within reach, he's covered in what appears to be defensive padding that doesn't impact his mobility, hell even his SHOES are spiked and dangerous. While his scarf and mask aren't tactically advantageous, they give him a far more intimidating silhouette that helps create the terrifying, memorable presence that spreading his message demands. Something else worth noting is that there's little to no telegraphing of what his Quirk is. No blood decals, no tongue imagery, nothing about paralysis or being stunned. You see this sort of thing everywhere in heroes and villains alike- Bakugou's grenade gauntlets, Moonfish's Hellraiser-ass tooth display, Best Jeanist's... everything. One could make the argument that blood or tongues are referenced in his scarves, but it's nowhere near as obvious as many other things of this nature. In this world, Quirks are an integral part of people's identity, and having this imagery naturally functions as a way to broadcast your personality, skills, and individuality. Having this absent adds to the threatening mystery of the Hero Killer; understanding something always makes it far less intimidating as when it was unknown. Spinner obviously tries to emulate all this, but the effect is hamfisted and unrefined. His gear, while initially similar to Stain's, is obviously less effective. His armor is thinner and covers less area, the placement of offensive spikes on the knees as opposed to the front of the foot. I'm no combat expert but when it comes to a skirmisher fighting style kicks seem far more viable than knees. Spinner's scarves are much shorter and he's wearing goggles on his forehead for... no reason? To top it off, any hope of intimidation goes out the window when his opponent sees the bright blue polka-dots completely covering his torso. It even comes down to their primary weapons; Stain wields a long, simple, deadly sharp katana made rugged and scratched by dozens of battles while Spinner's sword is a ridiculous pile of knives duct-taped together in a way that's aesthetically badass and tactically useless.

I think the interesting part of Spinner is exploring his shortcomings and what they mean rather than judging him for them. Because in all his faults to embody Stain's ideals, he embodies something arguably just as important- how society and the League of Villains has twisted those important ideals into something much darker and unrefined.

In closing, I want to point out what I think is the most important thing about considering Spinner going forward in BNHA's story. Everything we've seen and everything I've said is based off the persona Spinner's constructed. But like I earlier said, Quirks are an integral part of who someone is. And this is one aspect of Stain that Spinner has successfully emulated- while we know he has one from his reptilian appearance, we have no idea what his Quirk is. While we know what Spinner is like, we have no idea who Shuichi Iguchi is- or what he's truly capable of.

Tl;Dr: Spinner is a shitty Stain fanboy, but how he functions as one and what that represents is what makes his character interesting.

how do you feel about daisy in this last season, especially re: coulson

omg this is so nice!!! i love questions!! keep in mind that i’ve only seen the most recent season once and watched week to week so my memory is pretty fuzzy (i tend to feel differently about shows once i’ve binge rewatched as well), and also that i just got home from work a little awhile ago and am very tired so i might not be able to articulate myself properly.

anyway,,

i really really love my daughter??? i love her so much that my take might be a bit biased (i am watching through a daisy loving lens is what i’m saying), but i really do feel that she was let down last season. season six may endeavor to fix a lot of the problems i had with it and go a long way to give her the screentime and narrative focus she deserves, but i came out of season five feeling pretty bitter.

daisy suffered so much trauma in s5, at the hands of her loved ones who are a crucial part of her sense of family and stability and belonging to make matters worse, and the lack of followup was hard for me to swallow. admittedly, this is coming from someone who would have liked a season literally just about all of the chars processing and coping with what happened in the framework, but… still.

there was just… so much potential, so many things to explore and deal with… and rather than attempting to unpack any of it, daisy was overshadowed by other characters and overarching plot that wasn’t all that great to begin with. she was underutilized and underappreciated, by both the narrative and other characters within it.

i think the biggest letdown was how they handled the immediate aftermath of the fitz incident and everything after. like, it’s not like we don’t.. see it? we see how lost and worn down she is, how harshly everything has impacted her, but it’s not…..treated as important? i kept waiting for daisy to get her turn, but….she never did. there were a few framework mentions which made me hope that they were going to dive deeper into that and especially the fact that the doctor tortured daisy, but… nothing. i got daisy digging up her mother, but nothing was ever said about the fact that daisy, much like her mother, suffered horrifically at the hands of a white man, just as her mother feared she would.

all of this was happening at the same time daisy was faced with the possibility of losing coulson, who daisy says herself is shield to her, which could have made for a great arc about daisy’s entire sense of stability and identity being ripped away from her and her overcoming that.

i love fitz, up until this season i had more muse for him than any other character apart from daisy, but watching how he was continually prioritized over daisy was… so very difficult for me and it pains me because that’s my son and fitz/daisy is among my favorite dynamics in the show if not my favorite. daisy deserved to speak, to process, to be granted the time and consideration she deserved, but instead.. she was at best forgotten, and at worst out right harmed by the very people who are supposed to make up her one and only family. the show didn’t care, the characters didn’t care, it was all very ?????????? to me.

to tie in coulson… the fact that…..they never….talked about this…….was bullshit???? i can’t remember what plot thing was thrown in to keep them separated but the idea that you would not give daisy a scene with coulson following this is….. quite frankly……….. bullshit? and imo, the show suffered as a result of it. the show needs these moments of reflection between coulson and daisy. they put things into focus. they ground the show. when the show focuses on the dynamics that make up its foundation, it’s always always better for it.

anyway like, i think they had so much potential here. i am very much here for a story exploring how the possibility of coulson dying changes things for daisy, because coulson has very much been her rock and to say losing him would destabilize her would be an understatement. and i’m very much here for what we got, which was daisy clinging to coulson and wanting needing to save him at any cost because it’s coulson and he’s everything to her. i would have liked to see if that caused daisy to lose touch with the moral compass and keen sense of right and wrong that has been her anchor as much as anything else, how losing the center that is coulson sent things spiraling out of control for her and what that might have made her do.

i don’t really have any problems with the route they went down except for the fact that i would have liked more, for the show to truly embrace the fact that………it is daisy’s story, ultimately, and if not, definitely the story of daisy and coulson, but i do begrudgingly accept that due to the pacing of the show i can’t always have the intense reflection and emotional focus i want. every daisy/coulson scene we did of course made me bawl like a baby, and i do wonder how the show will compensate for him being gone if he really is gone for good, but i’m not especially worried about it. i’m excited to see how it changes things for daisy and hope that she gets the narrative focus she deserves. i’m especially excited for may/daisy and this potentially bringing them even closer as they lean on each other (god i hope we get to see them lean on each other and grieve together.)

so like? all in all, i don’t have problems with how daisy was portrayed and love her a lot a lot a lot, i just wish the show had remembered that she is its central character and had given her a better narrative. tbh i take more issue with jemma and fitz’ characterizations, because… that shit was messy. i enjoyed the first half of the season a lot, i just felt like everything kind of fell apart in the second, maybe because it was so plot driven. idk. i may feel differently when i rewatch, but that’s where i’m at rn. i hope that answers your questions, thank you so much for sending this in!!!!!

You will never catch me saying a single positive thing about some ‘progressive move’ Marvel editorial makes in an X-Men comic until every single decision maker of the past ten years is out of those offices.

Individual writers, yes. Editorial, the ones handing down the creative mandates? Hell no.

This means Northstar and Kyle’s wedding, Bobby, Rictor and Shatterstar’s outings, Storm’s solo series, etc, etc.

Because Marvel editorial does not actually give a single fuck about any of the messages embodied by the X-Franchise, and spent the last ten years proving it.

Marvel as a company was happy to profit off the X-Men movies after they sold the rights to save themselves from bankruptcy. But from the second Iron Man became a success and the movies they churned out featuring characters they still had all the rights to started making profits they got to keep fully, they actively torpedoed the X-Men franchise both in the comics and outside of them. Because now the X-Men were technically competition, at least in the arena of movies, which is where the real money was being made.

Like, it seriously pains me to remember how HUGE X-Men fandom was in the eighties, nineties and early 2000s. Across the comics, various cartoons and the movies, X-Men was one of THE biggest fandoms, back when the fandom juggernauts of today like SPN, HP and the like were still wee baby fandoms.

And Marvel actively, deliberately killed it. Because they didn’t want people focusing on X-Men characters and reading X-Men stories and buying X-Men action figures instead of Avengers ones. It’s why they made no effort to resolve the issues blocking Wolverine & the X-Men from getting a second season. Even though the first season got ratings that more than justified a followup that would be guaranteed to be profitable for them. And why there hasn’t been another X-Men cartoon since. Even though Marvel always held the rights to make more cartoons while Fox held the movie rights.

It’s why Marvel editorial set out to do House of M and Decimation...those storylines aimed at essentially ending the possibility of new mutant characters were created specifically to do that. They literally did not want new mutant characters that might end up being breakout hits that fans wanted more of in place of more Iron Man, Captain America or Avengers-related properties like Young Avengers. Quesada, the EIC at the time, said it was because writers were getting too lazy with their origin stories as long as they had the concept of mutants to fall back on. All they had to do with a new character was say ‘oh they’re a mutant’ instead of coming up with a unique angle for where they got their powers.

Except then Marvel turned around and reconfigured Inhumans into the new mutants, tweaking their decades old concept to make it so suddenly there was no limit to how many new Inhumans could be created, unlike the limit they’d imposed on new mutant characters. And suddenly you had dozens of new characters with electricity powers and flight and super strength and shapeshifting and who looked no different in any meaningful way from any new mutant character introduced ten, fifteen years prior...except now, all of those dozens of new characters ‘unique angle for where they got their powers’ was oh, they’re Inhumans instead of oh they’re mutants.

And it wasn’t even like Marvel made Inhumans the new mutants because they had active, important plans to incorporate their concept into their live action universe....again, it LITERALLY was done simply to make the X-Men franchise less necessary. They pushed the Inhumans movie back year by year by year until finally scrapping it altogether, and put barely any effort into the TV show they made of it instead. The only evidence of Inhumans in the MCU is still just in Agents of SHIELD, the show they barely do any promo for and honestly don’t care all that much about. The Inhumans’ sole purpose over the past ten years has basically just been to be an alternative to mutants, should anyone want one....not even BECAUSE the MCU actually wanted one.

And then you had shitty events like Avengers vs X-Men where it was never in question that it was going to be at the X-Franchise’s expense. And in the aftermath of that, they claimed to be making a big push to incorporate the X-Men more into the Marvel universe, do stories showing that the other heroes cared about mutant issues.....all by folding the X-Men into Avengers titles. Books like Uncanny Avengers were launched, with X-Men on lineups with Avengers and calling themselves Avengers....but no new X-books were launched with Avengers in their stories. Because that was never the point. The point was that it basically got X-readers who didn’t give a shit about Avengers comics to pick up Avenger titles in order to read about Storm and Rogue and other favorites....without marketing having to acknowledge the X-brand label in any actual way. Literally just to use X-characters to sell Avengers books, without actually doing anything for the X-franchise.

Not to mention the way the X-franchise’s direction has dramatically shifted every one, two years over the past decade, with no clear oversight or shepherding of it....because it basically became the place for writers to do whatever the hell they wanted, because Marvel as a company DID NOT CARE what happened with the X-books. All the terribly thought out storylines to appear in X-titles of the last decade happened because pretty much any pet project a writer Marvel valued wanted to try out got the green light for them to do in the X-books, because they didn’t have anything they wanted out of the X-brand, other than for it to not siphon fans away from their preferred properties. So you had things going one way one year and then pull a complete 180 the next year when a hot new writer at Marvel wanted to do something completely different.

Not to mention the way Marvel’s consistently funneled their low-selling writers into writing X-books, except for when high profile writers wanted on an X-title. The X-books became a testing ground for new and unproven writers, which occasionally did result in some good stories, yes, but I don’t really think Marvel deserves props for the efforts of those writers when they only got to do those stories because Marvel didn’t actually care.

And the most obnoxious thing about all of this is....they were still making money off the X-Men the whole time. From their comics, from repeated viewings of their older cartoons, from toy sales, etc. The X-Men have continued to turn a profit for Marvel even as Marvel actively drove them into the ground....because as long as it wasn’t ever going to be AS MUCH profit as Marvel could make off the movies of characters they had all the rights to....they didn’t want the X-Men ever even potentially overshadowing the Avengers in current readers’ eyes.

So it honestly pains me to see Marvel given any credit whatsoever for various progressive moves they’ve made with X-characters over the past decade. Because while all companies are in it to make money and I don’t expect otherwise, I can’t think of any other occasion where I’ve so clearly watched a company spit on one of its most profitable and iconic properties and all its fans, for the crime of....making money. They literally crashed and burned the franchise with full knowledge of what they were doing, and actively drove away one of the biggest fandoms out there, turning it into a wasteland compared to what it was, because the well established success and visibility of the X-franchise and fandom was in their eyes a threat to the MCU franchise and fandom they were trying to cultivate instead.

And given that on a meta level, the X-Franchise has always appealed more than most to readers from marginalized communities because of the allegories inherent in its core concept....its honestly kinda insulting whenever I’d see mainstream headlines and news stories giving Marvel editorial kudos for a high-profile gay wedding or making a founding X-Man gay or other well-received moves over the last decade....knowing full well how little regard they actually have for the readers those moves mean so much to, given that pretty much every other decision they make around it is meant to keep the X-Franchise from overtaking the Avengers in popularity again.

Like, don’t get me wrong because Bobby Drake has been one of my three favorite superheroes of all time for most of my life, in part BECAUSE I always read him as gay or bi.....so I love love LOVE that he’s officially a mlm in canon and has gotten his own solo series. But at the same time, its obnoxious as hell to be aware that people have been speculating about his sexuality for decades and making references in canon even, and outing him only actually happened BECAUSE he’s an X-character. You notice that for all the positive praise Northstar’s wedding and Bobby’s coming out garnered Marvel, they haven’t been in any rush to make a high profile Avenger gay, have they? Like....yes, the X-franchise has always been the franchise to make social commentary in, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only reason big creative alterations like making one of the oldest Marvel characters gay was only happening in the franchise Marvel didn’t give a fuck about.

So it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the comics now that the X-Men movie rights are back with Marvel and under the Disney umbrella. And I do hope and think that means the comic books will start to get a more cohesive direction again with the X-Men taking more pivotal roles in the comics and getting higher profile treatment again.

But fuck ever giving any of the current Marvel editorial staff credit or recognition for any progressive stories in the X-books. Because they very much do not care about the concept of the X-Men or the messages the X-Franchise is capable of sending with its stories. You can’t dedicate ten years to actively minimizing the franchise that means so much to marginalized readers and still claim to actually give a crap about any of the representation that franchise provides for those readers. Like, lol, you just can’t.
