The fact that Mulder and Scully never got a well-lit, well-shot kiss unencumbered by obstacles of any variety (be they bosses, babies or broken bones) is made all the more frustrating by the fact that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both look like really, REALLY good kissers. DD has played a lot of sexy/romantic roles; "Californication" alone gives ample evidence of his kissing prowess. Gillian hasn't played as many roles requiring make-out skills but she does this thing in "Playing By Heart" where she pulls back from Jon Stewart's mouth and traces his lips with hers.... 😳😳😳 She does a similar thing in the FTF blooper kiss, where she pulls back from David/Mulder and makes his mouth chase hers. She teases him a bit with her tongue before diving in... 🥴🤯🤤 and YES, she is hamming it up for the crew (not us cos we were never supposed to see it GRR). Actually, she hams up that moment more than David, who just plays it straight. That is NOT how Scully would kiss Mulder for the first time. (Maybe for the second time. But even so. Mulder would be like: Wait a minute. Nice girls don't kiss like that. And Scully would be like: Oh yes they fucking do.... And then do it again). Those blooper kisses are ALL Gillian, not Scully. And as grateful as I am that the kisses Gillovny tried so hard to insert into the M/S narrative leaked, I can't even believe THEM as real Mulder and Scully kisses. In short (not that this is news): WE WERE ROBBED. Over and over and over again. Because not only do DD and GA have the most epic chemistry in television history, not only do Mulder and Scully have the most epic love story in television history, NOT ONLY do DD and GA have the most kissable lips in television history, I believe to this day that they also possess the oral skills to elevate a well-lit, well-shot, well-timed, completely unencumbered kiss to the most sensual and satisfying consummation of sexual tension of all time. Only Chris Carter is a puritan so. Here we are. 30 years later.

the scully of fight the future who doesn’t want a career in the bureau at all if she can’t do it with him. who debated even telling him that she’s quitting in person, and feels like her loss won’t even make a difference: he doesn’t need her, she only holds him back. the scully who doesn’t even make it to the elevator. the way that as soon as he starts speaking, she goes silent. she can’t even respond. this is not a debate. tears just pour down her face, as he tells her that she owes nothing. that she has made her favorite person, a “whole” person. that she has saved him “a thousand times over.” and she stays completely silent. all she can do is cry, and hold him, and kiss his forehead. how small she must feel sometimes…being dragged from one spot to the next, following along. the way her face just collapses as she moves from holding onto his shoulder to pull him down to her. he breaks her open sometimes.

... I knew I forgot to add something to the Lunter Iceberg post...

So... there is another detail that makes the wolf shirt even more sus. It's a line Camila says after we get the reveal Luz's school team is "Wolves: and Hunter reveals his wolf shirt. Its from Camila's dream sequence:

Adults: Ugh. So unhygienic. That girl must've been raised by wolves.

Camila: Hey! Wolves are actually great parents, and-

Camila's dream sequence comes right after the wolf shirt scene. So the wolf symbolism happens like this:

We get the reveal Luz's home team is named "Wolves"

Hunter reveals the wolf shirt he made to Gus and emphasizes how much he loves wolves

Camila's dream emphasizes wolves and ties her and Manny to the wolf symbolism.

So it's like... hmmm... interesting how Hunter, Luz and Camila [and by extension Manny] are associated with wolves to a bigger degree than Gus, Vee, Willow, and Amity are in this episode. Sure Gus, Vee, Amity, and Willow are part of "the pack" since they're color coded on his shirt, but the wolf behind Hunter's wolf isnt green...

Hunter obviously places Luz on the same level as himself... Hunter only wanted Luz to know Belos was still alive and only wanted Luz to help him keep everyone safe... Also jsyk the leaders of a wolf pack are always the mated pair - they the parents of the pack while the other members are their pups... So Luz and Hunter being presented on the same level - as leaders of the pack - is extremely sus...

... and then we get the Caleb/Evelyn = Lunter propaganda that isn't subtle in the slightest towards the end of Thanks to Them... Unrelated but we also get Hunter dying and coming back to life in the same Graveyard Manny is buried in...

Haunting, unbelievably haunting.

The moment I saw that huntlow scene in ftf my brain went from 'they're both strong enough to pick up the other, that's so cool' to 'just like raeda' to 'this makes lumity, the main ship, the canon ship and the most loved one the only one that we didn't see one of them carry their partner'. Like???

While y'all where hoping your ships would kiss in wad I was hoping for Amity to pick up Luz and I got what I wanted, because I have my priorities figured out

I always think the question with MSR isn’t so much who fell first or fell harder—mainly because I personally think it was pretty simultaneous / parallel—but rather who became self-aware about their feelings first.

In my take on this ship, they may well have gone years without fully admitting to themselves how they felt, or fully addressing the feelings head on. They were so distracted by the work and the Truth and the heady emotional power of Partnership and Trust. It was just really possible for them to stay in denial, these two characters in particular.

I tend to think Mulder faced the music first—that he was the first to accept the feelings weren’t platonic. Maybe I think that because he’s the believer, or he’s a doomed Romantic in a big R sense. I could see this realization coming as early as Scully’s abduction, but it could have been as late as Never Again or the cancer arc, too.

But I think @randomfoggytiger might argue it was Scully who understood her feelings first and waited for him to get his act together. I can be convinced of this, too, especially in fanfic. In The End, Scully has to have some awareness when she is stewing over Diana in that car. That could be her first realization, although it could have been earlier, too.

I listened to the XF Diaries podcast’s recent interview with Frank Spotnitz, and he talked about how he viewed Mulder and Scully in season 6 and the FTF near-kiss. He said they didn’t talk about it because they both thought it was something they shouldn’t have been doing. He said the show couldn’t spell it out for the audience because the characters didn’t have their own feelings figured out.

I thought that was striking, thinking about how all the way as late as season 6 the 1013 writers imagined them in this state of not fully realized feelings. I do get frustrated with this kind of talk because it seems so disembodied and unrealistic. I mean, six years, and they haven’t thought seriously about this?

But … also I admit to kind of liking this really repressed version of MSR. This version of MSR that just can’t get its shit together to admit what is happening. In other words, they aren’t exactly pining. They are more just in massive mutual denial. Fingers in ear, nah, nah, nah, I can’t hear you, no feelings here. That does make dialogue in season 6 episodes like Rain King and HTGSC and Milagro seem especially tense and loaded and fun.

And I do like fanfic that depicts them being forced to come out of denial; it’s much rarer than fanfic with one or both of them consciously pining. I mean, please. Do not mistake me. I like the pining fanfic very much, too, and I write it more. It’s just interesting to think about.

I have bounced around a lot of theories as to when Mulder and Scully started sleeping together, and my latest is that they have been casually sleeping together from very early on. Maybe casually isn't quite the right word, but I think some desperate fucking occurred during the cancer arc which was of course never mentioned again, and at various other emotionally stressful times they ended up in bed together but then act like it never happened because they can just do that.

Despite the multiple times they have slept together, the IVF thing is still awkward and adorable becuase it still truly has the energy of Scully asking a coworker to be the father of her child even though they have been unofficially married for years.

And that's why their kiss in millenium is so so significant. The half kiss in Triangle and the almost kiss in FtF both happened during high stakes, emotionally wrought moments. The new years eve kiss was not that. There was nothing urgent happening and their stress levels were fairly normal for once so that kiss is them finally accepting that they are in fact deeply in love and any and all sex that happened after that was what caused all of the silly flirty happy-go-lucky moments in S7.

Os - Mulder and Scully are epic huggers. Scully throwing herself half dressed into his arms in the pilot, and his surprise and then acceptance? Scully finally opening up and letting herself cry in his arms at the end of Irresistible and how much he needs to hold her too? Scully folding herself over Mulder in Demons as he crouches on the floor after drilling holes in his head on a suicide mission to find answers before it’s too late and Scully is gone? The FTF hallway scene - you’ve kept me honest, you’ve made me a whole person??? Mulder using baseball as an excuse to put his arms around her in The Unnatural - in a very rare moment of lightheartedness and joy? Scully wrapping herself around him again in another moment of despair at his mother’s death in Sein und Zeit? Mulder tucking her into bed in Requiem and wrapping himself around her and telling her what he felt watching her hold that baby? The way they wrap around each other - and nuzzle! noses! - on the motel bed at the end of The Truth, left with nothing but each other, and maybe that’s enough?? I have nothing profound to say, just that they love each other.

Xs - But what - truly what - did txf production team have against light? Game of Thrones watchers thought they had it bad with that night battle? Try waiting through 5 seasons and an epic bee-block for Mulder to kiss (well, a 1939 version of) Scully in Triangle and to be able to tell that it’s hot, but to see almost nothing! Just shadow! Even my favorite kiss - the jail cell reunion kiss in The Truth with Skinner hovering awkwardly in the background - suffers from this show’s commitment to its dark, spooky aesthetic. Because it’s the little details that I can see that I love so much - their thumbs each caressing each other’s cheeks, the way they don’t want to let go - and I want to see it all. The forehead kisses though, they can never take those away from us.

And I’m still salty that they never kissed in the revival!

* I didn’t include any cut scenes, extra takes, etc. since they aren’t part of the episode, but just know that I have lost minutes - hours - days - of my life watching the FTF outtakes, thank you GA and DD 😘
