when — may 22 where — water treatment plant who — @gabe-reyes
A classic Volkov skill is interrogation. An art taught through observation first, watching monstrous father make tiny humans out of burly men through cleverly placed words. Like adding pressure on the brain, right in the sore spots, until someone gives in. Daiyu has never been very good at it — it’s something she’s berated for, something she’s excluded from. Which is to say: her father doesn’t want her asking their subjects questions, he only wants her to maim them. He looks at his youngest and knows she’s no good at psychological warfare ( not even the perfect pawn for it ) but so very good at all other kinds of war crimes, if pushed hard enough. He loves her best when coated in blood, which is to say he doesn’t love her at all.
But then, take this situation. A man, wounded. A dark water plant, with no way out. His body littered with man-made wounds that insinuate that there’s someone after him, which might be the biggest issue. Here’s what Daiyu wants: to just see him healed and to not think of him. Here’s what she knows what needs to happen: risk-assessment through questioning and, if necessary, eliminate that threat.
She really does not want to do any of it. The dark presses at the sides of her vision, even with the sharp light of flashlights moving around, and it’s too much like punishment. Too much like the basement. To be literally shut in somewhere, not by the hand of an enforcer or her father, somehow feels bad all the same. Some people believe in God, don’t they? Maybe this is that God punishing them: just another flood meant to cleanse the earth. It would be so easy to believe in such things, but Daiyu doesn’t. Daiyu just knows she can’t show up with a random hurt dude with no idea who he is, if they’re ever to get out of here.
Tumblr media
So, she crouches down. Suri lingers somewhere in the background, that inexplicable spark of a girl that Daiyu cannot begin to understand. There’s a gesture at one of his wounds, a mild threat of digging her fingers through the bandage into marred skin. In stead she extends a half-full water bottle. “So, who’s got it out for you? This shit’s fresh, so is anyone gonna come knocking for you?” Might be a blessing in disguise, if they can get the door open. Daiyu would prefer fighting an intruder over this. “More importantly: why are you here?”

CLOSED STARTER for @gabemonroe LOCATION: The Quad
By the time Avery woke up, the sun was up and the lights were back on. Thank God. The first thing she did was shower. The following thing she did was get ready with the intention of heading to the dining hall to satiate the grumbling in her belly. On her way to the dining hall though, she spotted a familiar figure laid comfortably on the grass of the quad. Dozed off. Far too relaxed. Would be such a shame if someone changed that... Mouth bent in a devious twist, she approached the sleeping figure.
Avery watched him at first, wondering if he was the same kind of sleeper she was where just sensing another pair of eyes on her woke her up. When that didn’t seem to do anything, she inched forward and just barely brushed the foot of her Converse against his arm. No? Okay then. This was going to be all the more fun for her now. Digging through her purse, she found a dented bottle of water that was still a third full. Unscrewing the cap, she bent at the knees so she wasn’t so high above Gabe’s face and very carefully tilted the plastic container towards the slumbering basketball player, more and more until a trickle of water poured from its mouth and spilled onto his head.
“Hey, sunshine.” She greeted when he opened his eyes. “Got really comfortable last night, huh?”

I actually prefer Gabe turning into stone by opening the box himself.
He wasn't monstrously abusive like he was in the book, he was a more toned down deadbeat emotionally abusive loser, which fits the show's more PG theme.
Having Sally KILL him in the show would have felt out of place and a bit extreme. In the books it made sense bc the early 2000's was very much a "kill your bullies" era.
The movie was criticized for Percy planting the head to turn him to stone rather than Sally, saying it was robbing her of her agency. But show!Sally has plenty of agency, even to the point where she is able to file for divorce and kick him out, something book!Sally didn't do.
I like this change, I think it fits with the shows vibe, and its not too extreme since he fucked around and found out all on his own.

Im already seeing really bad takes that the show didnt make Gabe “abusive enough”. First and foremost, there are so many different forms of abuse, not just physical abuse. When we first see him, he is instantly belittling Percy. You can see how much of the space he takes up in the apartment. He has a single recliner, a jersey on the wall, and a side table all for him while he gambles with Sallys money. He is immediately financially abusive and verbally abusive.
Second, he answered Sally’s phone and spoke to the principal at Yancy. He is trying to control how Sally raises her son and is giddy at getting another person to bully again. Also, he controls the car. Sally has to negotiate with him and manage his reaction to her taking her son to Montauk. In this scene we see her sass him back and tell him to ask her nicely which I think is a great way to show that Sally still has some agency in the situation. She is able to say she doesnt want to be spoken to disrespectfully.
Lastly, in The Lightning Theif, Percy states “For the first time, I realized something. Gabe had hit my mother. I didn’t know when, or how much. But I was sure he’d done it. Maybe it had been going on for years, when I wasn’t around.” This was in the second to last chapter of the book. People are mad they didnt see him hit her in the first EPISODE??? Be so for real. Give the show time to flesh everything out.
ANYWAYS STAN SALLY JACKSON AND WATCH THE SHOW

when — 1 july where — the mall who — @gabe-reyes
Daiyu got her hands on a tape player once, as a kid. An ancient device, even by old world standards, but it had worked and it had played her songs. She doesn’t quite remember who gave it to her – can’t have been her dad, might have been Nik or any of her father’s allies from back then – but she does remember how at some point the tape got stuck. The same bit of the song played over and over and over and Daiyu, in her careless and blind-angry state, had wrangled the tape out, leaving plastic bits over the floor. The player still worked, but there were no more tapes. Not until months later, anyway.
She’s reminded of it now, as Gilbert’s words get stuck in her head. I want to kill Alexei – to kill Alexei – kill Alexei – kill – kill – kill. It dizzies her. It makes her head hum. It makes her glad he isn’t here, in this quarantined building, because her body must be betraying something.
In an attempt to focus, she zooms in on the task at hand: find someone who can do something about the cut that continues to make Gilbert bleed. Don’t think about the hand and knife responsible for it. Don’t think about the lies. Focus. She hopes to find Ophelia as she bursts back into the main area of the mall, but she’s not in any mood to be picky. Reyes, she by now knows, is apt at healing, and so when her eyes fall on him she rushes over. Fingers wrap around his wrist, pull him to her. Her knowledge of him is limited, but she knows enough. He’s familiar with Gil. He’s got healing hands. “Got a minute? You’re good at medic shit, right?” She hopes she doesn’t look as unhinged as she feels. “’Cause if so, you’re needed. Like, right now.”

“So do we have a deal or am I killing all 3 of you so I. Can eat. In peace?!”
Walker is the absolute king of micro-expressions.
Tumblr media
This is how Percy reacts to Ares’ threat. Up to this point, he’d actually been giving the god some pushback (in typical Percy fashion). But the second Ares’ tone changed, the second that he gets angry, leaning forward, forceful and red-faced, Percy’s demeanor changes. His eyes widen, eyebrows draw together, his mouth falls open before he intentionally presses it closed, and he looks away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s completely avoiding eye contact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he does look back at Ares, he has this slightly disdainful look in his face. The way that one side of his face is kind of scrunched up.
Tumblr media
You wanna know what Percy still doesn’t do? He doesn’t hold eye contact. He looks at Ares, sure, but for less than a second at a time. When he finally says they’ll do it, he’s looking away and his eyes very quickly move to Ares’ face before looking away so quickly that it’s easily missed, almost like he’s trying to see how Ares reacts to his “surrender.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what does Ares do? He backs off. Sits back in his chair and smiles like he didn’t just coerce a kid. And while he’s talking, after that, we see Percy briefly again and he’s the only one of the 3 not looking at Ares.
Tumblr media
The sudden fear in Percy’s eyes at Ares’ tone and inflection? Lowering his gaze? Giving in despite clearly not wanting to and the moment of processing after the interaction is over?
Just because we didn’t see Gabe being overtly abusive onscreen, doesn’t mean the abuse isn’t still there in subtle ways.
