tell me about the Ganondorf/Link ship 👀

Hi anon!

So I ship Ganlink in many of the canon universes, but the one I'll talk about here will be Twilight Princess, my favorite iteration of Ganondorf as well as Link. I'm putting a lot of the Manga's backstory onto Link. In this instance, Ganondorf's invasion of the castle is successful, and Link is captured.

Ganondorf makes the first move, with Link in a cell a la Peach and Bowser and just kind of talking at him. He doesn't hurt him because where's the gratification in that? He won. He had exiled the princess to the desert and sent the ruler of the Twilight packing back to her realm. There wouldn't be any pleasure from torturing the hero any further.

Link learns that Ganondorf's motivations are entirely centered around saving his people from the harsh desert. He learns that the King of Hyrule denied him and his people asylum as well as supplies to keep them alive.

Link doesn't speak at all (I headcanon him as selectively mute due to a combination of gender dysphoria (he's trans) and a HORRENDOUS stutter that people made fun of) and he's shocked that Ganondorf appears to respect that.

Ganondorf at least attempts to get him to speak, but it's surpringly not that forceful. "You are not much of a talker, are you, Chosen?" And a shake of his head gets Ganondorf thinking.

Ganondorf starts learning Hylian Sign Language in the hopes he can get Link talking.

The first thing Link asks him once he realizes Ganondorf understands his signing is if he's the last of his people. Ganondorf seems angered by this, but the anger ebbs away quite quickly to a somber sort of look, and he sits down in a chair outside the cell. The conversation goes something like this:

"You're the last of your tribe... aren't you?"

"... Yes."

"I'm sorry."

"It is no fault of yours what happened to my people."

"If it helps... I'm the last of my tribe, too."

"Your small village in the forest would suggest otherwise."

"They aren't my tribe. They took me in several years before this all happened."

Link shares what happened in the city he destroyed by pulling that sword. Ganondorf appears to be sympathetic. He opens the cell door and releases Link's limbs from their chains. He fully expects the smaller male to strike him and run, but... the hero merely sits on the stone instead. Ganondorf sits across from him.

"Why did you not run?"

"What's the point? I've got nowhere to go."

"Your village?"

"They think I'm dead. Besides, nobody would want some washed up hero who failed the one task he was given."

Ganondorf winces at this. It is his fault, after all.

"Was it even your choice to begin with? This task?"

"No."

"If given the choice, would you have done the same?"

Link's sign is much more snappy this time. "No."

So... not only had this boy failed in his goddess-ordained task, but he hadn't even wanted to do it in the first place.

"The goddesses have a cruel way of pawning about their chosen."

"Could've figured that out on my own." A bitter glare from the hero.

"Come." Ganondorf stands up, gesturing Link to come with him.

And so, Ganondorf outfits Link in something OTHER than green, he puts him in blue. Gives him his own room in the castle. Allows him to come and go as he pleases. And when Link inevitably leaves the castle, the people swarm him and ask him how he escaped. And they're shocked when he says,

"He let me go."

So I saw this post and well you know how it goes…

 Now I’m thinking about Entomologist Ganondorf and traveler Link

 Link in one of the rare times he is home for a few days and finds himself without plans turning on the old television that came with the place. Flipping through the channels absently and finding nothing of interest until he sees this giant of a man with butterflies clinging to him as he talks about them. Link recognizes the butterflies, he tasted on a few years back when he was traveling death mountain. Spiciest bug he ever tastes and the effects were great, he could barely feel the heat of the lava as he climbed higher and higher.

 Ganondorf calls them Smotherwings and talks about all their benefits and how the locals use them in potions they sell to visitors to help them stand the heat of the volcano. From there he moves onto another region and another bug Link’s eaten while visiting. He watches entrance and fascinated as the man interacts with both live and mounted specimens talking about all of their benefits Link had unknowingly been taking advantage of.

 Link posts about the show as he watches it. How attractive he finds the butterfly man how he wants to eat bugs with him and listen to him talk about them for hours. How he wants to marry the butterfly man.

Once the show is over Link is immediately trying to find the episode so he can track the butterfly man down. Unfortunately other than using the one social media app to post pictures from his travels he’s no very good with the internet. He texts Zelda in frustration. She laughs as his continued ineptitude with technology that isn’t the one app he bothered to learn. She does manage to find his name and then Link is able to find him too.

 Link starts following the man looking forward to more bug related content from him in the future.

 He wakes up the next morning to find that Ganondorf has followed him and gone through all of his stuff likening all of his bug eating posts. On the post where Link expressed wanting to marry the man, sure it would never be seen by more than a few friends Ganondorf has replied with - I’m flattered 💍-

 Zelda being the little shit she shared it with her own massive following with – You’re going to say yes right? -  She is not the only one commenting on it, hundreds of people Link does not know have opinions on their supposed upcoming nuptials. It is a little unsettling and he promises himself to get revenge on Zelda for unleashing her followers on him. He has a massive uptick in followers since last night because of all of this.

 He doesn’t respond publicly instead sliding into Ganondorf’s dms - Do you want to go on a date? – Nervous and hopeful, stomach feeling like he has tried swallowing a live butterfly again. It tickles too much he will not make that mistake again.

He is not left waiting long, phone pinging near immediately with a response - Will there be bugs? -

 That is an easy question to answer – Yes – and he hopes it will be well received. He is pretty sure it will be but there is still a nerve racking second before he gets his answer.

 - I’d love to – Link is giddy with excitement.

 They both go radio silence for a while, no bug facts from Ganondorf, no pictures of Link’s travels. When they do finally show up online again they both post the same picture. The two of them smiling and feeding each other bugs in some remote location.

 Zelda once again has her followers in a frenzy when she replies to their pictures with – There better not be any bugs in the wedding cake. – They laugh when they read it and go back to enjoying traveling together, ignoring their growing follower count.

Seeing all this Ganlink is making me wanna toss my own AU onto the pile~

It’s basically a soft soulmate!AU and mashup of Minish Cap and Ocarina of Time, wherein in Hyrule, there’s a legend about Kinstones. You find half of one at a random point in your life, as if put there by fate, and if you meet and fuse Kinstone pieces with someone who has the other half, they’re destined to be your soulmate.

It’s mostly Hylians who believe in this legend, what with there being so many different cultures, though not impossible, but even so it’s a very big surprise when Ganondorf finds one of his own, though he doesn’t entirely understand what they are or what they mean despite spending the occasional week or so there on business trips to the castle.

Link has one too and is very secretly romantic about it, hoping someday to find The One to fuse it with, but almost ran out of hope because nobody’s ever matched his. And then, naturally, one day him and Ganondorf cross paths and discover that their Kinstones were a perfect match. Not so perfect that they have to keep it a secret from everybody though.

Some other fun facts about the AU is that it’s a sort-of rewrite of Ocarina of Time where:

- Ganondorf’s biggest goal is more land for his people and is trying to be more diplomatic about it. He’s keenly aware of the affect power has on people, and hates the way the Hylian King- King Dorom Taraghlan Hyrule- wields his. - Ganondorf is reluctant to bring war to Hyrule because fire and death leave a bad taste in his mouth, but he will if push comes to shove because he’s roughly this 👌 close to snapping. - Link was raised as an orphan in the town of Hyrule and was something of a thief, wanting a better life but kind-sorta accepting that this was his lot in life. - Zelda has had visions of disaster and believes Ganondorf is the reason why, but there’s more to them she doesn’t realize, among other things. - Both Link and Zelda are besties and meet when they were young, while Zelda was training under Impa, who accepts Link under her wing as well. - Impa is more aligned with Zelda than her father because she feels bad that her people are being relegated to torturers and feared agents of the shadows. Shadows, yes, but she wants peace as much as Zelda (and, to an extent, even Ganondorf) does.

It’s just a very fun and sweet story about soulmates, forbidden love, Link going “I can fix him” while Ganondorf is all “I can make him worse” and falling in love and character growths and discovering dark secrets of a shining kingdom’s throne.

I could go on and on (and I most likely will later now that I’ve opened the floodgates) but for now that’s the basic gist of it! :D
