Dharma Transmission

Mel Weitsman at the Dharma transmission ceremony for Ed Brown said that the ceremony is not to say that someone is 'enlightened' rather that the person can "practice" on their own.

In short, it is graduation from seminary training.

My own take on it, then and now, is that Mel was that the individual no longer needed 'Daddy' and could attend to the Great Way themselves to continue to go forward without someone needing to tell them to 'get up' everytime they stub their toe or fall down.

Though, I view ceremonies as 'Much Ado About Nothing', they are 'rites of passage' in a Zen community and advancement in the ecclesiastical order.

Every religion has these rites. Theravadan monks have a rite after 10 rains (years) that when a junior monk becomes a senior monk. It is a big thing.

Tibetans have a rite after the completion of a set of initiations, when the monk becomes a Lama.

When the SZA when to Gempos teacher, because of the sexual abuse, to remove his Transmission, the teacher refused, saying that such was never his to give, thus he cannot take it away. This means that when the student is ready, they reach forward to the cosmic buddha (the true teacher) receiving the 'mind-transmission'.

This is how Dogen claims Mind-transmission from Rujing,

According to a frequently cited passage in the Eihei KOroku, Dogen re- turned to Japan from his travels in China in fall 1227 “empty-handed” (source)

Later Dogen makes the case of his transmission fully knowing well that the lineage was broken long ago, thus he claims the transition via merit.

So, what I am telling you the secret, is that Dharma transmission is claimed by the student through their own merits. When a teacher recognizes that a student is able to 'practice' on their own, Dharma Transmission has been done, only the teacher needs to 'Let go' or as my first Zen Teacher Gary Carlson said, "To get the hell out of the way' LOL :)

Now, if you are wondering....The answer is Yes. I cannot speak more than just that.

Not until Master Hakuin reached 79 years did his calligraphic writing truly reveal his inner self. That of the Buddhist nun Otagaki Rengetso occurred during her final year, at age 84. I thought you said are you still classpecting kh characters. I'm not really sure how to answer your real question, so I'll just say, I did finish classpecting the characters I wanted to do. It was kinda stressful cause I wanted to get them all right but I'm not exactly classpector general or anything. So I never did end up drawing them because it was such an undertaking by the time I finished I was like fuck this it's dumb anyway lol. Maybe I will draw them one day. But since you expressed interest, I will tell you what I got and you can give me your input if you want :)

Attach To Nothing

Kitano Gempo, abbot of Eihei temple, was ninety-two years old when he passed away in the year 1933. He endeavored his whole life not to be attach to anything. As a wandering mendicant when he was twenty he happened to meet a traveler who smoked tobacco. As they walked together down a mountain road, they stopped under a tree to rest. The traveler offered Kitano a smoke, which he accepted, as he was very hungry at the time.

“How pleasant this smoking is,” he commented. The other gave him an extra pipe and tobacco and they parted.

Kitano felt: “Such pleasant things may disturb meditation. Before this goes too far, I will stop now.” So he threw the smoking outfit away.

When he was twenty-three years old he studied I-King, the most profound doctrine of the universe. It was winter at the time and he needed some heavy clothes. He wrote his teacher, who lived a hundred miles away, telling him of his need, and gave the letter to a traveler to deliver. Almost the whole winter passed and neither a response nor clothes arrived. So Kitano resorted to the prescience of I-King, which also teaches the art of divination, to determine whether or not his letter had miscarried. He found that this had been the case. A letter afterwards from his teacher made no mention of clothes.

“If I perform such accurate determinative work with I-King, I may neglect my meditation,” felt Kitano. So he gave up this marvelous teaching and never resorted to its powers again.

When he was twenty-eight he studied Chinese calligraphy and poetry. He grew so skillful in these arts that his teacher praised him. Kitano mused: “If I don’t stop now, I’ll be a poet, not a Zen teacher.” So he never wrote another poem.

The Buddha teach that the root of suffering is attachment, for yogi attachment is first yogi step, let go of self by let of what others think of us and so on, let go of everything. We confuse non attachment with no love what is wrong our society drive like train wreck of trauma due to very high attachment to ourself to others and what we expect from them, to our status our lifestyle. Mahasiddha knew by let go of all of this they were also free themselves from suffering.

How to let go of attachment in our time ? Working with emptiness is one, non attachment doesn't mean love in contrary that the opposite.

Also letting go gradually of the affairs of the world we are bombarded by them about everything as Milarepa quotes they carry on forever.

Meditation on emptiness to let go and train our mind to cut attachment, is the key.

Yes that hard work all the Mahasiddha path is hard work but when we finally reach the same stage we will also free ourselves from suffering .

It is recorded of Huai-hai that one day his monks, feeling he had grown too feeble to work, hid his gardening tools. When they refused to heed his entreaties to return them, he stopped eating, saying: “No work, no eating.” The same spirit was expressed in modern times by Gempo Yamamoto-roshi, former abbot of Ryutaku-ji, who died in June of 1961 at the age of ninety-six. Almost blind and no longer able to teach or work about the monastery, he decided it was time to die, so he stopped eating. When asked by his monks why he refused his food, he replied that he had outlived his usefulness and was only a bother to everybody. They told him: “If you die now [January] when it is so cold, everybody will be uncomfortable at your funeral and you will be an even greater nuisance, so please eat!” He thereupon resumed eating, but when it became warm he again stopped, and not long after quietly toppled over and died.
