Pelargonium echinatum
Pelargonium is a large genus in the Geranium Family, and many of the plants commonly grown as "geraniums" are actually pelargoniums. They are very abundant in southern Africa, occurring in both summer-rainfall and winter-rainfall areas. Pelargonium echinatum is one of the winter-rainfall species, coming from Namaqualand in the dry northwestern corner of South Africa. Its leaves, with scalloped edges and grayish undersides, hide the spiny stems during the winter growing season, and it flowers profusely toward the end of winter. The flowers are initially white with crimson spots, but they change to pale pink and then deeper pink as they age. Once dry conditions set in in late spring or early summer, it will stop flowering and shed its leaves, and at this time its spiny stems are on full display until the next rainy season.

Geranium molle, growing wild! Read more below about this fascinating herb. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Its common name is Dovefoot Geranium, or Dove's-foot Crane's-bill. Nicholas Culpeper in his herbal of 1652 suggested a variety of uses for G. molle, including the treatment of internal and external injuries. A note was made that the bruised leaf healed external injuries faster. A decoction in wine was said to relieve gout and other joint pains. The plant is considered to be anodyne, astringent and vulnerary. In fact, you can use it as a tannin in herbal formulas, along with Quercus and Capsella.  The bees LOVE the plant. It actually produces a kind of dark pollen. Geranium molle is a small plant reaching on average 5–30 centimetres (2.0–11.8 in) in height. It is a very branched plant, quite hairy, with several ascending stems. The leaves are palmate, cut 5 to 9 times. The basal leaves are arranged in a rosette, the upper ones are sessile, rounded and hairy, with a long petiole of about 5–12 millimetres (0.20–0.47 in).  The flowers are pinkish-purple, 8–12 mm in diameter, with very jagged petals. It blooms from April to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite and mainly pollinated by Hymenoptera. Fruits are glabrous, usually with 6-9 transverse ridges. #2125 - Geranium solanderi - Solander's Geranium
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA native geranium, Australian cranesbill, Austral cranesbill, Cut-leaf cranesbill, native carrot, and hairy geranium. It is native to most of Australia and to New Zealand.
Originally described in 1800 by Daniel Solander as Geranium pilosum (meaning 'hairy geranium', a common name that seems to have stuck) from a specimen found in New Zealand. Solander was the first university-educated scientist to set foot on Australian soil. Unfortunately, that name had already been used in 1787, and it took 165 years for anybody to get around to renaming it, after Solander himself. The 165 year thing probably explains why 'hairy geranium' stuck.
I was quite surprised to learn that this one is a native to Australia and New Zealand - I'm far too used to every other Geranium and related plant I encounter being an introduced weed. Solander's does surprisingly well in weedy areas, apparently.
The Noongar people of south west Western Australia used the older red tuberous roots to treat diarrhoea, after cooking.

Pelargonium echinatum
Pelargonium is a large genus in the Geranium Family, with many species present in southern Africa. This species comes from Namaqualand, in the winter-rainfall area in western South Africa. Its name “echinatum” means spiny, and it is not obvious why it would be so named when it is leafed out in winter and spring. But it is summer-deciduous, and without leaves its spiny stems are quite evident. It makes a terrific flower display, with the flowers starting out white and then darkening to pink as they age.

Language of Flowers: Silver-Leafed Geranium
There’s a flower for each day of the year in the language of flowers. The flower for today, November 26, is Silver-Leafed Geranium, which signifies recall. Image above from Wikipedia. Consider silver tea sets, silver threads among the gold, and silver anniversaries—comfortable reminders of wealth, of age, and of the passage of time. Plants with silvery foliage in the Geranium family…
