Favorite Otps/Pairings: Jess Mariano & Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) “Look, you know we're supposed to be together. I knew it the first time I saw you two years ago and you know it, too. I know you do.”

I don't think enough people discussing the ending line in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life remember that Paris runs a fertility clinic.

I think one of the failings of Gilmore Girls was not exploring Rorys interests outside of what path she decided on when she was a junior in high school. Like she and Paris were class vice and president, they basically did an internship program in DC, and Rory got some really good networking opportunities out of that. She’s an excellent debater, she has a vested interest in local politics, she’s a feminist (technically, even though her behavior isn’t the most feminist she still subscribes to the ideals of feminism from the time), and she knew she wanted to be a reporter. She was ON OBAMAS CAMPAIGN TRAIL! She was running events in the DAR! She worked for the Yale Daily News! So why did the show have her be a burnt out, stale, entitled, and passionless reporter? She never wanted to be interviewing people standing in lines in New York, she wanted to be boots on the ground in WAR ZONES getting the important news to the people! Even if that wasn’t a very practical application for her later in life, she could’ve redirected that passion and purpose into doing speech writing or reporting or event management or something in politics! They readied her so well for a career as a campaign manager or PR chair or press member, why didn’t they follow through!!! All the pieces were there!!!

Okay so listen, fun fact about me is that I LOVE Gilmore Girls (Write that down there’ll be a quiz later) Like I’ve watched the original series multiple times. Seasons 1-5 amazing, seasons 1-3 immaculate. But, when I was sick last week (Covid finally got me) I watched the Revival again, and you can’t even begin to imagine my joy at the news of my that they were bringing it back, honestly can’t even imagine. My sisters and I planned a watch party, me and my mom and aunts signed up for a special Gilmore Girls Themed trivia (We took third place and only lost first by 2.5 points) But, the Revival was garbage…It was just bad. Now that being said, if they ever decide to make a second season of the revival, I will be the first one watching it.

Gilmore Girls Theory
This is a strange one as it isn’t really a plot theory, but just the date I think next season of Gilmore Girls will be made/air.
Basically, Gilmore Girls is in a bit of a weird position right now. The show last aired in 2016 but Netflix has said they are happy to pay for another season to be made, the Palladinos along with other members of the cast have said they’d be open to making another season when the time is right and finally, further backing up the potential of a future season the Palladinos had an opt out clause in their contracts with Amazon Prime nicknamed the Gilmore Girls clause that would have allowed them to leave at any time to continue making Gilmore Girls with Netflix.
The latter is probably less of an issue now given The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is now airing its last season, but while it was being made that clause was in their contracts.
Anyway, when all this came to light I predicted when I think the next season would air. I personally think the next season will be made/air in 2033. My reasoning being this would be around the time Rory’s child is turning 16, the age Rory was when Gilmore Girls started. You then have a good kicking off point for witnessing the relationship between Rory and her own child, not to mention a wider potential for a multiple season show. Kinda a Gilmore Girls: The Next Generation.
Earlier this year, Gilmore Girls started a TikTok account. Feels kinda odd for a show that hasn’t been on the air in just under 7 years now and it made me wonder whether they have something in the works. It has now been revealed they are releasing a picture book which will act like a prequel to the main series. From what I can tell though, the primary audience of this book will be children which is an interesting target demographic for a show which is seen as having a multi-generational audience.
I told my friend @cryptidwrangler about this and his exact words were, “they’re making the next season the final one and locking in a new audience so they’ll profit off nostalgia streaming for a couple decades, calling now”
Now, I don’t agree with this 100% but I feel it does fit in with my theory rather well. My theory is the next season will be in 2033 focusing on Rory and her child, once her child has turned 16. Any kid reading this children’s book now would be around that age bracket once the show next airs if my theory is correct. You then have nostalgia of what may have been a beloved children’s book for them making its way back to the screen, so a decade or so later using that new audience for the future of the show.
I think that fits rather well.

I don't care enough about these fandoms to really go looking, but I'm sure there are interesting comparisons to make between the reactions to Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. especially those regarding the disappointed expectations raised by the audience themselves with no responsibility from the writers, just out of a disproportionate concern for the hetero subplots/male characters, imo. AND a fundamental misunderstanding of some of the lead women's natures, but that's another thing.
I also think it'd be a more interesting comparison than every time I've seen someone trying to draw a 1:1 equivalence between characters of each show (it's usually a huge disservice to one of them lol), but I don't wanna get into that either.
I'll just say that they are outrageously different endings in many ways but I found them poignant and satisfying for the central female characters (by which I mean all three Gilmore women, Midge, and Susie). Amy Sherman-Palladino, you've done it again: write a show that, on paper, I shouldn't care much for; dazzle me with banter and minutiae and hyper-specific social situations and the setting-character dynamic; and then come with a worth-dissecting ending that left me slowly nodding in sincere appreciation and awe.
