First Round Victories!

Both Pawnee City teams come out on top in their first round games on Monday, January 30. Both games were played in Pawnee City, with the boys facing HTRS for the second time and the girls seeing Southern for the first time this season.
Our boys started off the night with a 54-41 win over the Titans. Jett Farwell led the team in scoring with 21 points, followed by Anthony Kling with 18, Drew Menninga with 11, and Brysen Horst and Justin Pierce, each with 2. The team moves on to round two against the Irish of Falls City Sacred Heart. The game will be played at Lewiston on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m.
The girls played the last game of the night and won the close match-up with a score of 23-21 over the Southern Raiders. Madison Lytle led the Indians in scoring with 13 points, followed by Emily Lytle with 8 and Madelyn Osborne with 2. The girls move on to play the Johnson-Brock Eagles in the second round. That game will be played at 6:00 p.m. at Tri-County Public School on Tuesday, January 31.

A Russian prosecutor on Thursday asked a judge to sentence WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner to nine-and-a-half years in prison for drug charges, and the defense team in her trial said the judge was expected to hand down her sentence by evening. In seeking close to the 10-year maximum, the state’s request ignored the athlete’s plea of leniency. Griner pleaded guilty in July to carrying vape cartridges with cannabis oil into the country. The prosecutor’s call for a tough sentence for Griner — as well as a fine of 1 million rubles ($16,590) — came amid calls from the United States for Russia to seriously weigh its offer on a prisoner exchange to bring her home. A member of Griner’s legal team, Alexander Boikov, told the judge that Griner deserved to be acquitted despite her guilty plea, saying the prosecution had failed to prove criminal intent. In addition, he said, her rights were breached during the investigation and legal process. “We know that in Russia the laws regarding drugs are very strict,” Boikov said, “but Russia also cares about its prestige in sports.” Griner’s career, and her play for the UMMC Ekaterinburg team during the WNBA offseason, has been a celebration of friendship between people, he continued. “She had many offers, but she for some reason chose cold Yekaterinburg, knowing how warmly she would be received there." The prosecution contends that the 0.702 grams of cannabis found in the Griner’s luggage after she landed at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February was a “significant amount.” Griner testified last week that she was in a hurry when she packed, had no idea the items were in her bags and did not intend to break Russian law. The Phoenix Mercury star testified that she uses cannabis oil in the United States for treatment of chronic pain from injuries but knew that carrying cannabis into Russia was illegal. A Clean Sweep

On December 19, Pawnee City varsity girls and boys play the Wetmore Cardinals at home. It was a successful night for both Indian teams! The girls won with a score of 53-13. Leading the team with a total of 18 points was Emily Lytle, followed by Madison Lytle with 13 points, Mallory Branek with 6 points, Cameron Ottersberg with 5 points, Cara Pierce with 4 points, and Logan Maloley, Neveah Blecha, and Kenadie Schmutz each with 2 points.
The boys won with a score of 47-23. Leading the game with a total of 13 points was Jett Farwell, followed by Drew Menninga with 12 points, Anthony Kling with 10 points, Brysen Horst with 9 points, and Langden Tozer with 3 points.
During halftime of the boy's game, 3rd through 6th-grade girls played a scrimmage. The scrimmage was organized by Coach Ensminger. The girls have been practicing on Tuesday nights since November to be able to do this. They have also had games on Saturdays in November and December. After the girl's scrimmage, they took pictures with the high school girl’s basketball team and enjoyed getting autographs!
