Father Malcolm
Summary: The OC, Jane, is Ian Malcolm's adopted daughter, like Kelly, and is being bullied. Her dad's angry and kind of (clearly) flips out a little.
*********************************************************************
Third Person POV
Ian Malcolm used to only have one kid: a cute little Black girl named Kelly. Now, he had two: Kelly and Jane, a small Irish girl maybe a year or two older than Kelly, who was now 16. The reason Ian adopted her was because he used to know her great-grandfather, John Hammond, and hated to see that when he'd died, she'd go into the system. He adopted her right away, knowing John wouldn't want his great-granddaughter at risk in the system. Ian loved her, very much, and he wanted nothing more than to wrap her in Bubble Wrap and keep her from the world forever, just like Kelly.
The day his daughter told him a boy hit her, he flipped. Bad. I mean, Ian was all about protecting kids, the innocents who needed it, if he could help. But a boy? Putting hands on his daughter? The kid was as good as dead. Jane was severely upset, and she told him, "I didn't even do anything, he just doesn't like me!" "Ignore that, for now," Ian said, feeling the rage building in his blood like a pot on boil. he desperately wanted to find this kid and beat him, but he couldn't, because...well, because he as a minor, for one, and two, he didn't think going to jail would be very helpful right now. "Come here." He led her to the garage, where her old drum set was. "I've heard you practicing, can you play me something?" He asked, and jane nodded, smiling shyly. She took a seat and picked up the sticks. "Any requests?" She asked in her soft voice. "Something badass," Ian smirked.
She smiled, turning to a small digital laptop and pulling up a music loader, selecting a song. The tones of "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath began to play, and she started to go to town. She did amazing, Ian was proud of her. "good choice," He grinned when she was done. "Listen to me, Jane." He said when they got back inside. His daughter turned her bright green eyes on him. "Don't you ever let a boy hit you, okay? If he hits you again, you have my permission to kick his ass." She giggled, and he continued, "I want you to tell me something. Did he say anything to you?" "That you and Uncle Alan and Aunt Ellie didn't love me anymore, that's why I don't have a real family." I'm gonna fucking kill this little shit, Ian swore in his mind. Gritting his teeth, he said sharply, "Well, we do. And that is never going to change, got that?" She smiled, looking a little sleepy. "Yes, dad. I do." "Good." He kissed her forehead. "Go take a nap or something, you look tired." She mock-saluted him. "You're the doctor." Then she smirked slyly. "I mean, you're the chaotician." "Go!" He playfully shouted, and she laughed, running to her room and shutting the door. I'm going to protect her, I swear to God. I will give my life for you, Jane Malcolm, He told himself. And he would.

How Post-Punk Influenced Nowadays Fashion
It's been a long time since Malcolm McLaren opened his boutique "Sex" in the 1970s, and Vivienne Westwood equipped the Sex Pistols with their iconic outfits and sent them out onto King's Road. The approach back then was: "Being anti at all costs, against the establishment." Eventually, it turned into "Do It Yourself." It was fashionable because it tried not to be fashionable.
Tumblr media
A few years later, members of Joy Division met at a Sex Pistols show in 1976 and started as a punk band. However, it soon evolved into something entirely different. When you listen to old Joy Division songs like "Warsaw" you can clearly hear the punk rock influences, but the band quickly started to deviate from the common motifs of the genre.
Tumblr media
The music slowed down. The noisy guitar sound of punk was subdued to appear more intriguing, and Ian Curtis's existentialist lyrics, influenced by authors like Fyodor Dostoevsky, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Franz Kafka, focused not on chaos, rebellion, and hedonism but reflected his fears, physical sufferings, and the absurdity in the face of the zeitgeist and social influences of the 1970s and 1980s, marked by changes and political uncertainty, forced Joy Division to experiment.
They created not only something musically unique but also something aesthetic. For example, with their monochromatic designs on their album covers for "Unknown Pleasures," which is probably the third best-selling T-shirt in fast fashion stores, alongside Nirvana and the Ramones T-shirts. Joy Division ended in 1980 after Ian Curtis hung himself in his kitchen. They not only helped shape the sub-genre "Post-Punk" but were also the unofficial soundtrack of existentialism. The soundtrack that made Joy Division's music feel so genuine. Because it was genuine.
Of course, in the 1960s, there were artists who processed existential themes in their lyrics. A good example would be Lou Reed of The Velvet Underground, who, heavily influenced by literature, dealt with many serious topics in his lyrics. However, it wasn't just their music; it was also their appearance that defined Joy Division. On stage, in promo pictures, and in interviews.
Tumblr media
Ill-fitting shirts from army surplus stores, old man's pants, a few pair of derbies, big raincoats. Everything that was atypical for the punk movement, and many other artists, including The Cure, The Smiths, Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Friend or Sisters Of Mercy, went in the same direction: Through a dark, introspective, sometimes minimalist, but avant-garde aesthetic, they set themselves apart from punk and society, and looking at bands from the Post-Punk Revival from the 2000s like Interpol, Iceage, Molchat Doma, Boy Harsher, or Cold Cave, it quickly becomes apparent that this aesthetic has proven itself for almost 50 years.
Tumblr media
This trend was, of course, not only an inspiration for musicians but also for artists, fashion designers, architects, and many more.
One designer that immediately comes to mind is Antwerp-Six member Ann Demeulemeester from Belgium, whose influences clearly evoke artists like Siouxsie Sioux or Patti Smith but also the playful goth look of the 1980s era by Rei Kawakubo (Comme Des Garcons) or Japan's goth father himself: Yohji Yamamoto.
Her story begins in Antwerp, where she initially studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and quickly got to know the other Antwerp-Six members. She and the Antwerp Six presented their collections at Fashion Week and quickly became highly esteemed designers, now considered among the greatest designers of all time. Many of Ann's collections featured songs by Patti Smith, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, or The Velvet Underground.
This alone shows the influence of Post-Punk on Ann Demeulemeester's designs. Her asymmetrical cuts and draperies, her monochromatic, Kawakubo and Yamamoto-inspired, mainly black designs were groundbreaking, bringing avant-garde ideas in a consumable form to the people.
Tumblr media
Another noteworthy designer from Antwerp is Raf Simons and his collections. Raf Simons grew up in the 1980s and was deeply rooted in the punk and goth subculture, whose influence can be traced in many of his collections or directly referenced by Raf himself. Notable are his A/W96 collection, which includes all-black looks with jet-black dyed hair and long black overcoats, his A/W99 collection with direct Joy Division references, black cloaks, and Gothic looks on the runway.
Raf's most famous collection A/W02-03 Riot Riot Riot! A coveted collection featuring cutoff and distressed hoodies, repurposed military garments, and loaded with punk references through patches. Among them, a bomber jacket with a patch depicting the self-harming Richey James Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers.
Obviously, his A/W03-04 Closer collection with a direct collaboration with Peter Saville, the graphic designer of Factory Records, featuring iconic graphics from Joy Division, New Order, and more.
Tumblr media
These two examples of designers actively influenced by this culture are just a fraction. These designers were punks or goths themselves. People influenced by the postmodern identity of the time and post-Soviet tradition. Post-Punk fashion embodies the music of the time it emerged and aligns with deeper considerations. So, it didn't take long for the entire fashion world to embrace this style, partly because "Gothic" and "Punk" became more mainstream, and partly because its aesthetic components were easy to design due to their often penetrating monochromatic minimalism.
Not only goths or avant-garde designers like Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela or Rick Owens, deeply connected to the style and subculture of that time, but also luxury designers like Prada, Balenciaga or Bottega Veneta are incorporating it.
Tumblr media
The look is romantic, dark, longing for death, partly edgy, partly overloaded. All aspects that exude a constant attraction from the clothing, as people are often drawn to "the other," sometimes even "the forbidden." The look can also be easily detached from the actual Post-Punk/Goth culture - something postmodernity excels at. The style of the Gothic culture can be perfectly broken down into its individual parts and used as a kind of aesthetic sandbox. Here a thick heavy chain, there's a choker, here big long earrings, add a pair of black high combat boots, a slim-fitted mesh shirt, and preferably paint the nails, and you're done. All things that houses like Prada, Marni, Bottega Veneta, for example, have done right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What we see today in the Post-Punk-influenced style and what we interpret as avant-garde should actually be considered a modern tradition. Post-Punk fashion embodies the music and the spirit of the time it emerged and aligns with deeper existential discourses. The design language and atmosphere of that time are now used by traditional fashion houses to incorporate young designers into their ranks and increase their relevance, merely fulfilling their quota to be considered part of the traditional fashion pipeline of LV, Dior, Gucci, and Balenciaga. The avant-garde cannot be seen as so established. The rapid growth these companies have undergone to make billions and the inheritance method of finding a designer to take over the house are enough to profile themselves as industry magnates.
Tumblr media
In a world where fashion constantly reinvents itself, the enduring legacy of post-punk culture persists as a modern tradition. From the raw, rebellious sounds of bands like Joy Division to the avant-garde designs of Ann Demeulemeester and Raf Simons, the essence of post-punk continues to captivate hearts and minds. As luxury fashion houses seamlessly incorporate this style, it's vital to recognize the roots and the countercultural spirit that birthed it.
The romantic, dark allure, the edgy overtones – they all beckon, inviting us to explore "the other," even the forbidden. Yet, amidst the mainstream adoption, a call echoes for authenticity. True avant-gardists, whether musicians or designers, carve their paths, declaring, "This is our thing." The new avant-garde emerges not just from runways but from the pulsating hearts of those deeply rooted in their subcultures.
In a world dominated by industry magnates, the journey of post-punk fashion from the underground to luxury houses is a testament to its enduring power. As we witness the evolution, let us celebrate the genuine, the authentic, and the countercultural voices shaping the new avant-garde.
So, whether draped in asymmetrical cuts or sporting a rebellious attitude, the message is clear: The post-punk spirit lives on, and the next wave of avant-garde creators is ready to make their mark, confidently declaring, "This is our thing."

Stolen Glances Pt. 1 - Ian Malcolm
Tumblr media
@toomanybandstocare - thank you for the wonderful prompt!! Totally taking you up on it [Prompt Here]
Professor!Ian Malcolm x Student of Professor!Fem!Reader
Warnings: None! (Wine?)
Summary: Your father invites his colleague over for dinner and he turns out very different than you expected.
“Dr. Y/L/N!” The man said, walking into the room confidently with a bottle of wine in his hand.
“Professor Malcolm! A grand entrance as always!” You hear your father say from across the hall. You put down your book and walk into the kitchen of your home where your father and- who you were assuming was- Dr. Malcolm pouring wine.
Dr. Malcolm was an interesting man for sure, however his appearance was not what you first noticed. He had a commanding presence, but not threatening. His confidence and charisma radiated off of him. He seemed to know your father well enough to throw out some simple work anecdotes, but nothing of any more substance.
Your father finally noticed your presence in the kitchen and gestured you into the room further.
“My goodness, excuse my manners Ian! This is my daughter, Y/n” Your father says cheerfully. “Y/n, this is Dr. Ian Malcolm, a colleague of mine!”
You reach out and shake his hand firmly and he gives you a small nod. “She happens to be in your particular field of study I believe, Ian!” Your father chimes in.
You turn toward him. “What field of study do you teach, Doctor?”
“I am a man of theoretical mathematics, more specifically… uh.. the amazing possibility of.. um.. chaos theory!” He smiles brightly “Do you happen to be a student of.. uh.. theoretical math Y/n?”
“I’m actually not very familiar with theoretical math, however I am interested in the theories surrounding it. Currently, I’m pursuing the study of general, or to you more practical, mathematics at the university” You reply. “So you study the work of Edward Lorenz?”
He looked stunned for a moment. He had barely known anyone interested in chaos theory in his lifetime, and an undergraduate student was talking about Edward Lorenz, the inventor of the theory he bases his life’s work on. He practically grinned from ear to ear as he looked you up and down to evaluate you.
“See Ian, I told you she was something special” Your father said, beaming with pride. You put on a faux innocent expression and simply said “What?”. Then you made eye contact with the professor.
Just then is when the weight of his appearance hit you. His eyes bored holes in yours, sparkling with curiosity. He was dressed all in black attire, a button down and slacks from work you were assuming, except the top few buttons on his shirt were undone and his sleeves were rolled up. You could see the chain he was wearing around his neck under his shirt and the many rings he had. His dark framed glasses slid down on his nose so you were looking right at him, his dark curly hair hiding none of his face.
Your faux innocence faltered severely, causing a shy smile and a large blush to creep up on your cheeks as you broke eye contact and looked down at your shoes. You heard him chuckle slightly from in front of you and then finally raised your head back up to look at your father.
“So,” you said “what’s for dinner?”
“Steak dinner tonight Y/n, only the best when we have guests over!” He laughed heartily.
“Please, don’t go through trouble for me-“ Malcolm started
“Nonsense!” Your father interrupted. “We have to celebrate anyway, dear Y/n is starting her last year of classes before she is off to graduate school this week as well, it’s no trouble at all!”
“Congratulations!” Professor Malcolm said looking over at you again. “That’s a big achievement to make it this far.”
“Well thank you, Dr. Malcolm. I got my schedule today and I think you will be pleased to hear there may be a theoretical mathematics course on my roster. My father said he wanted to go over it with me anyways tonight.”
He looked you straight in the eyes again and your heart sped up. It was difficult to keep eye contact with him for a long time. He was a man that practically screamed intelligence and power, and for the first time in your life you couldn’t get enough of it. The magnetism alone took you completely by surprise.
“Well don’t just stand there! Dinner’s about ready, why don’t you go get your roster from your room and bring it down here for afterwards.” Your father suggested.
“Happy to, be right back.” You said and you swiftly exited the room.
You went to your room and grabbed the Manila envelope off of your bed. Y/N Y/L/N was printed in big bold letters on the front. You turned and exited your room to walk swiftly through the hallways back to the kitchen. You suddenly saw a shadow round the corner just before you bumped into it and jumped back, startled.
“I’m so sorry, truly, I.. uh.. apologize” You hear, realizing it’s only the professor you nearly walked into.
“No worries at all sir, I just got startled” You say with a breath of relief.
“No need to call me sir, Y/n. Dr. Malcolm is fine, but please just call me Ian, if you’re more uh comfortable with that.” He said with a smirk playing on his lips as he pushed his glasses up.
“Well Dr. Mal- sorry, Ian, thank you for coming.”
“Please is mine. Your father sent me to get wine glasses, do you uh know where those might be?” He asked, leaning against the wall he was next to.
“First cabinet down this hallway, there should be 3 perfectly clean glasses on the left.” You replied.
“Thank you, uh, very much”
You make your way to the kitchen and meet your father’s giddy smile.
“What do you think of him?” Your father says.
“He seems intelligent, good humor I suppose.” You put forward attempt a nonchalant tone. “He’s quite the personality”
“He may be your professor someday Y/n! Wouldn’t that be lovely!” You hear him giggle. Your father was always happy-go-lucky, but he always seemed especially happy when company came over.
“All good things I hope?” You hear from behind you.
You turn to face the voice that rattled you. You discover Ian leaning against the door frame with three glasses in his hands. His glasses slide down his nose and you look into his eyes through them, having to look up to be able to see his tall frame. He flashes you a wink when you linger on him a little too long and your face heats up wildly.
“Always” You hear your father say.
You take the glasses from him and set them on the counter next to the bottle of wine he brought over. You feel heat rise up from behind you as Ian reaches over you to grab the bottle of wine and uncork it. You have seriously never not been able to control your impulses and thoughts, but something about him breaks down every barrier.
~~~▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄~~~
You get through the delicious dinner with nothing more than slight glances over the table and his occasional smirk. You got to discuss some theory with him, which was a great experience. Discussions of the major influences of current mathematics, difference in theoretical vs. practical statistics, other things you had been learning and studying for your many years of university.
You finally got to discuss the schedule for your next year of classes with your father, but he insisted that Dr. Malcolm stay to give you advice for your last semester. It wasn’t a horrible idea in concept, actually you would’ve normally appreciated the opportunity, but the man in question was driving you crazy and you couldn’t understand why. While him leaving meant you would probably never see him again so you could focus, you really wanted him to stay. No one had ever made you blush like he did and you wanted to get to the bottom of why, Even if it involved getting a drink or two with him.
“Euclidean Geometry with a Dr. Hack, Probability in Statistics III with a Dr. Brown, and-“ Your father paused “Application of Chaos Theory with our very own Dr. Ian Malcolm! What a coincidence!” You father beamed out with joy, lightly tapping you on the arm.
“Well you will be one of my most interesting, uh, students, Y/n.” He said, looking you in the eye. “I’ll be seeing more of you then?” He added, leaning in.
“Let’s see where it goes, Dr. Malcolm” You say, bolder than you meant which immediately causes you to shrink back. He gives you an all knowing smile, looking right through you.
For once, you were excited for school to start again.
The Future Ex Mrs. Malcolm
Tumblr media
Ian Malcolm x Fem!Reader
Catch and Release Prompt: "Service"
Summary: (18+) You weren't quite sure how the chaotician became famous, but you were starting to see how he got his reputation.
Requests: Open!
Warnings: Excessive use of filler words. Oral (f receiving). Age gap (only mentioned).
You were pretty sure, from the moment you first saw him, that Ian Malcolm was famous. Did you know who he was or why he was famous? Of course not. He just had an air of superiority about him that only came from spending an extended period of time in the spotlight.
Well, a spotlight, at least.
You later found out that his claim to fame had something to do with math and chaos -- he'd been all too eager to explain it to you, but to be honest, anything to do with numbers slid right off your brain, and his pretty smile didn't really do your retention capabilities any favors.
You first met him when he brought his perfectly ordinary, if a bit "Hot Rod"-esque, car into your dad's shop to be serviced. While he waited for your dad to finish fixing up the car, the two of you talked.
Well, more accurately, you flirted shamelessly with no parent hovering menacingly over your shoulders.
You rather enjoyed the flirtatious attention of the older man, and you suspected he probably liked the equally flirtatious attention of a younger woman.
The next time you saw him, he had a different car. It was new, but only in the sense of whose hand it'd most recently fallen into. It was certainly older in every other way, maybe as old as Ian himself, though none of the previous owners had taken good care of it. The shell was rusted, parts were damaged or missing, and the seats almost certainly had blood in them.
Fixing it was going to be a multi-visit affair.
And that was how you found yourself being serviced by Ian behind your dad's car service shop.
It'd started like any of his other visits. This was his sixth, overall, and the two of you were emboldened by the idea that your father hadn't caught on yet --
Well, you were emboldened. You were pretty sure Ian didn't need a reason to be, he was just like that naturally.
He'd come to your counter, as he always did, to buy a Surge he never actually drank. He'd flirted, as he always did, and you flirted right back, as you always did.
You mentioned taking a break, and he mentioned needing some air.
His Surge was left forgotten on the counter as he made his way out the back door. You followed behind five minutes later and found him waiting for you in a shaded corner where no one would see the two of you.
His eyes feasted eagerly over your legs, bare but for your upper thighs, though they were shielded only by the loose skirt of your sundress.
"Those, uh, go on for days, don't they?" he asked as he stepped nearer. Before you could respond, he swept you into his arms, and you couldn't help but notice that you seemed to naturally fit together, like puzzle pieces.
"I, uh, always wondered... what your, uh. Legs. Looked like," he continued as you were pressed to the wall and his mouth landed hot and heavy on your bare shoulder. "Could never really, you know, see them. While you were, uh, behind the counter."
You whimpered as his lips trailed down your arm a few inches, his heated breath leaving goosebumps as it dissipated over your skin and left only a cool reminder that he'd been there. "I-Ian," you gasped, a hand reaching up to weave into his curls. You tugged down, and he easily let you pull him away from you.
The smirk he shot you had you all but melting, and the growl that accompanied it had you all but quaking.
"Hey, uh, you're the one in control here," he said, though the smirk he wore made you think maybe he was the one that was really in control, he just happened to not mind much what he ended up doing with you, so he could afford to let you have the illusion of control.
Not that you minded, much. Either way, you were getting yours.
"Do whatever you want," you told him.
His smirk grew just a touch wicked at that. "That's a, uh, dangerous invitation," he said carefully, though you could hear the arousal choking his voice even so, "be careful you don't let any, um... vampires... in."
"Are you a vampire?" you asked.
"Maybe," he answered simply, before his lips were back on you, trailing ever downward until he was on his knees before you. "Oh, this is much better."
His breath teased your inner thigh, eliciting another whimper from you. Hearing the effect he had on you only made him do it more, and soon all you could do was whine desperately.
"Pretty, uh, sensitive?" he asked. All you could do was nod in response and gasp as you felt, more than heard, the dark chuckle that emanated from his throat.
He moved on, his hands splaying over your thighs and fingers digging in as his mouth moved over the tender flesh, all but worshipping you as he delicately lifted your left leg up and over his shoulder to lay gracefully across his back.
He had nearly perfect access to you, now, though your panties obscured his view. He didn't seem bothered, though, as his face disappeared under your skirt.
A moment later, you felt a finger gently brushing the cloth aside. You whined as it inevitably made contact with your slit, hips rolling eagerly for more.
"Ah, ah," he tutted, breath dancing over your slit drawing forth a moan. His growling chuckle only made you moan again. "Good girl," he said in amusement, his hands returning to your thighs to rub them comfortingly.
He gave the thick meat of your thighs a squeeze, and then you felt his hot mouth on you -- you choked back a yelp as his tongue teased at your clit, circling it a few times and flicking against it once.
To keep yourself quiet, you bit down on a curled finger, and to keep yourself grounded, you buried your other hand in Ian's curls.
This only seemed to egg him on. His tongue swiped swiftly down your slit and plunged into your cunt. Your teeth sank into your finger and the squeal that would've otherwise sounded instead died in your throat.
A breezy chuckle rolled over your clit as Ian drew back to lave attention on it. Your hips rolled in response, which only made him chuckle more.
You could feel your insides starting to coil, could feel the desperation building. Ian seemed to sense it too, as his ministrations became quicker and more precise. Every breath, every flick of his tongue and touch of his lips, had shifted from teasing to drawing out your orgasm.
You wanted to scream as one last lap of his tongue from hole to clit finally brought you over the edge, but you bit it down, even as his tongue continued to circle your little nub to ease you through the high.
To compensate for your inability to scream your pleasure, you tightened your leg draped over Ian's back, drawing him in deeper to your core. He didn't seem to mind, even as he found his mouth fuller than he anticipated, if the grin you could feel was anything to go by.
Gradually, and with Ian's expert guidance,, you came down. You panted and sagged against the wall once the post-orgasm fog drifted in, and Ian carefully eased your leg down so that he could stand and offer you support.
You could see your slick shimmering on his lips and mindlessly pulled him into a kiss. He eagerly returned it, hands holding you tightly to keep you close.
"Would you, uh... marry me?" Ian asked in a low whisper, his eyes meeting yours.
"Bit quick, isn't it?" you replied, though you were grinning.
He returned the gesture. "I, uh. Never was one for... moderation."
You were about to answer, but then you heard your father calling for you. You shot Ian an amused glance. "Guess you'll have to come back to get my answer."
"I. I, uh. Look forward to it?"
"Maybe you should come back with a ring. Just in case."
So I rewatched Jurassic Park 3 for the first time since I was a kid, and here's a bullet list of stuff I liked (because I love this movie):
divorced couple with divorced couple tropes yayyyy
Téa Leoni is so beautiful omg no wonder I ended up a bisexual
"How did you meet the Kirbys?" "...Through our church" says the mercenary who looks like a mercenary and absolutely nothing else
Alan Grant/Billy Brennan. Look, if you want to see a father-son dynamic there, have fun. I'm seeing that and a student-teacher mutual attraction that simultaneously has married couple vibes, with 2000s flavor to boot. Old bitter academic/cocky twink with a hero worship, what's not to love?
a clever, competent child in a movie. The JP trilogy has always had cool kids (the worse being Malcolm's daughter, but she was still good enough and whatever flaws she has, I attribute to having Ian Malcolm as a father), and Eric is my absolute favorite. That child is gonna need a lifetime of therapy but he rocks!
"I have never been on this island." "Sure you have, you wrote that book." "That was Isla Nublar. This is Isla Sorna." Alan Grant is in this mess because of a guy's poor reading comprehension and ignorance of geography, that's so funny
"You mean there's two islands with dinosaurs?" DO YOU NOT WATCH THE NEWS OR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GO DO A RESCUE SOMEWHERE
Spinosaurus, my favorite dino as a kid!
the phone ringtone is my ringtone, so I jumped every time
this movie is so funny guys
the freaky shit: corpse stripped of meat behind the paraglider, dino embryos in vats in the lab, misty aviary
the Ingen aesthetic. All the metal and rectangles, and flat stuff. The buildings, the doors, the locks.
Billy's sad face because senpai is mad at him :(
great french dub (but that was the standard at the time, quality took a nosedive approx. 15 years ago)
the way Eric looks at Alan lovingly cleaning the hat Billy rescued, after discovering that Billy lived. That kid knows what's up, his smile says "your boyfriend survived, good on you, you old gay"
Dust Volume 10, Number 5
Tumblr media
Arab Strap
It’s lovely out. The lilacs are in bloom. The weather is warm enough to make a sweater/sweatshirt/coat redundant, and the bugs are swarming happily all over the garden. And yet, here we are, inside, ear buds in place, music on high, because however nice the weather, what if we missed something? What if, you, our readers missed something? Well, fear not, because we’re back with another set of short, impassioned reviews. Scottish lifers obsessed with their phones, South African jazzmen nearly forgotten, mumbling rappers, untethered improvisers—it’s all here for you. What, you were going out? Too nice to stay inside? Well, okay, it’ll be here when you get back.
Contributors include Ian Mathers, Justin Cober-Lake, Ray Garraty, Bill Meyer, Bryon Hayes, Jonathan Shaw, Andrew Forell, Christian Carey, Alex Johnson and Jennifer Kelly.
Arab Strap — I'm totally fine with it 👍 don't give a fuck anymore 👍 (Rock Action)
youtube
Even more surprising than this Scottish duo’s perversely triumphant return a few years ago is that in 2024 Aidan Moffat is writing more about the internet than about cheating and booze. (He’s still writing about those things too though, don’t worry.) Less shocking is that his laceratingly keen eye is no less effective when turned on his own relationship with his phone, or the way women are treated by the “fathers, husbands, sons and brothers” around them as soon as the deniability of a screen is in place, or the psychology of someone who turns to QAnon. And not just technology; with songs addressing those who’ve never recovered from the early-pandemic hit to their ability to go outside and those capitalism leaves to die in solitude, this might be the least relationship-y Arab Strap LP to date. Malcolm Middleton roughs up their sound again to match the bruised, heartfelt brutality of Moffat’s subject matter and the result is one of the most simultaneously empathetic and unsettling records from a band who’ve never been short on either quality.
Ian Mathers
Bad Nerves — Still Nervous (Suburban)
youtube
For their second album Still Nervous, punk rockers Bad Nerves take their ready-made formula and just amp everything up. Everything's loud and fast; the band clearly descends from the Ramones, but they've gone more manic. They secretly mix in flourishes of power pop. Underneath all the ruckus, they have a knack for catchy melodies, guitar solos and even vocal harmonies. Then Bad Nerves rough up the pop elements to make sure their disaffection comes through with enough spite to keep everything properly punk. The record does little to vary mood or tempo, but it doesn't need to. The band does one thing, but they excel at it. The Strokes comparisons the band's received mostly work, but the lo-fi production keeps everything sounding as if it's in an actual garage. “Plastic Rebel” offers a youthful rampage, bubble gummy enough to touch on Cheap Trick, but continually plowing forward. The Essex quintet closes the album with “The Kids Will Never Have Their Say,” an evergreen sentiment for the young and irritable. The point doesn't break new ground, but it's beside the point. Bad Nerves tap into something long running and rush the tradition on with plenty of verve and a hint of bile.
Justin Cober-Lake
Conway the Machine — Slant Face Killah (Drumwork \ EMPIRE)
If it wasn’t for Conway’s name on the copy to the album you’d think this was a long solo producer tapes with 40 guests on it, each mumbling about something nobody’s interested in except for the mumbler himself. It is not an exaggeration: it really lasts more than an hour, has close to 20 guests (depends on how you count) and even though Slant Face Killah is produced by a dozen of people the beats all sound the same. If it already sounds awful even for the diehard Conway fans, grip for the worst part of it. It ain’t even worth the trouble to skip all the tiring guest verses for the Conway verses because they are not good anyway. A total failure.
Alex Cunningham — Rivaled (Storm Cellar)
Remember October 2020? The time of still-subdued traffic, no shows and a looming election? Rivaled is an artifact of that moment. Nowadays, Alex Cunningham is an intensely active improviser, based in St. Louis but active all around the middle of the USA. Back then he was stuck at home and moved to make some noise. “Faith” and “Void” offer two paths to obliteration. The former is pretty plugged in, with electronic effects and appropriated radio noise turning Cunningham’s violin into a full-on electrical storm. The latter is unreliant upon electricity, but maybe even more dogged and savage. Originally released as an edition of 20 cassette, Rivaled is now a CD with a bonus remix that mashes both tracks together, both vertically and temporally, like a piggybacked highlights reel. Of noise relaxes you, you’ll want this close at hand when the next election rolls around.
Dun-Dun Band — Pita Parka Pt. 1: Xam Egdub (Ansible Editions)
Dun-Dun Band is an all-star cast of characters comprising some of Toronto’s most creative musicians and led by musical polymath Craig Dunsmuir. Dunsmuir is a shape shifter, trading guises and styles for decades: a guitar loop conjuror known as Guitarkestra, a purveyor of mutant disco vibes alongside Sandro Perri in Glissandro 70, a welder of minimalism, dub, and avant-garde weirdness as Kanada 70. His Dun-Dun Band collects members of Eucalyptus and Badge Époque Ensemble along with stalwarts Colin Fisher, Karen Ng, Josh Cole and Ted Crosby. Pita Parka is the group’s debut on vinyl and features three extended cosmic jazz jams that fuse multi-horn interplay to African-inspired polyrhythm. The music slyly winks at 1970s fusion but is more akin to that of modern ensembles such as Natural Information Society. The extended nature of the pieces allows the reedists to stretch their lungs and roam around, and for the rest of the ensemble to engage in creative interplay. Pita Parka is a stellar offering from some of Toronto’s finest players and one of the city’s most inquisitive and inventive minds.
Roby Glod / Christian Ramond / Klaus Kugel—No ToXic (Nemu)
The three participants in this session are all veterans of middle European jazz that’s free in spirit, if not always in form. Bassist Christian Ramond and Klaus Kugel are from Germany, and soprano/alto saxophonist Roby Glod is from Luxembourg; their collective cv includes work with Kenny Wheeler, Ken Vandermark and Michael Formanek. Online evidence suggests that they’ve played together as a trio since 2015, which explains their easy rapport and nuanced interaction, but this is their first CD. Freedom for these folks means having the latitude to linger over a tune or to settle into nuanced timbral exchanges, but if you carded them, they’d all have jazz driver’s licenses. This music swings, often at speed, which is a very important aspect of their shared aesthetic; the excitement often comes from hearing Glod invent intricate, evolving lines that are lifted off by fast walking bass lines and kept in the air with light but insistent cymbal play. While the album is named No ToXic, the sheer pleasure of hearing these guys lock in could truthfully be labeled counter-toxic.
Göden — Veil of the Fallen (Svart)
Longtime listeners of death doom will recognize the name Stephen Flam, guitarist and co-founder of storied band Winter whose Into Darkness (1990) concretized the subgenre in the US; the record was great, and still is. For his recent work with Göden, Flam has dubbed himself “Spacewinds,” and his bandmates follow suit, with stage names that are equal parts risible and ridiculously gravid: vocalist Vas Kallas performs as “Nyxta (Goddess of Night)” (those parens seem to be her idea…) and keyboardist Tony Pinnisi appears as “The Prophet of Göden.” Okay. This reviewer’s inexhaustible appetite for Winter’s slim output disposes him to think kindly of Flam, and there’s nothing especially terrible about Veil of the Fallen — but that’s only because there’s nothing all that special about the record. The sound of the title track is appealingly austere, and the NyQuil-chugging riffs of “Death Magus” are sort of fun. But any listeners hoping for flashes of the inimitable, awesome awfulness of Winter would be well advised to recall the meaning of inimitable. Not even Flam, it seems, can provide a convincing replica of those energies and textures.
Mick Harvey — Five Ways to Say Goodbye (Mute)
youtube
Former Birthday Party and Bad Seeds member Mick Harvey looks back at his life on his autumnal new album “Five Ways to Say Goodbye.” Although he contributes only four original songs, his skill as an arranger and interpreter reaches its zenith. Harvey imbues his own and others’ songs with intense emotion that never tips into melodrama or histrionics. Augmenting his acoustic guitar with evocative string arrangements which provide counterpoint and color to his lyrics “When We Were Young and Beautiful” may be the finest song he has written; poetic in structure, elegiac in feeling, Harvey faces his past with dispassionate empathy for lost friends and acceptance of where he is now. His version of David McComb’s “Setting You Free” locates a Faustian menace in the song, using the strings to carry the dynamic thrust and emphasize the turbulent ambivalence of the original. “Like A Hurricane” becomes an intimate, piano ballad. By changing the tense from present to past and stripping the song of its rock roots, Harvey creates an emotional impact missing from Neil Young’s original. On “Demolition” Harvey replaces Ed Kuepper’s funereal drums with an off-kilter drum machine that clatters like an old projector to evokes the disconnections inherent in the lyrics. Harvey’s treatment of songs from The Saints, Lee Hazelwood, Lo Carmen and Marlene Dietrich are beautifully rendered. A wonderful summation of Harvey’s often underrated talent and an album that deserves a wider audience.
I Like To Sleep — Bedmonster’s Groove (All Good Clean Records)
This combo from Trondheim, Norway started out bridging the sound worlds of Gary Burton and Sleep. That’s a canny move if you’re looking for relatively untrodden ground, and as it turns out, a successful one. On Bedmonster’s Groove, which is album number four, the trio has dialed back the heaviness; you won’t hear a power chord until the beginning of side two. Instead, they have taken a turn towards experimentation. The microscopic applications of filters and effects give confer a variable glitter to Amund Storløkken Åse’s vibraphone, squeezable padding to Nicolas Leirtrø’s six-string bass, and some texturable variety to Øyvind Leite’s drums, which are all shown to good effect by some lean grooves and uncluttered melodies. Åse has also added some instrumentation; synths flicker and swirl in the empty spaces, and a mellotron heads a deliberate charge towards prog territory.
Kriegshög—Love & Revenge (La Vida Es un Mus)
Throughout the long existence of Kriegshög, it’s been customary to identify the band as a d-beat act. Love & Revenge is Kriegshög’s first release since 2019 and only its second LP in their (at least) 16 years of playing in and around Tokyo. Prolific, they ain’t, but the music is always worth waiting for. On this new record, the band rolls back the pace a bit and amps up the crusty, metal textures. Less squall and rampant chaos, more muscle and riffs that roll up in well-worn biker leathers — but all those qualifiers are relative. There’s still a raw edge to the production (if that’s the term we want…); the bass is laced with so much fat crackle that you’ll want to fry it and eat it. Sort of fun that one of the most volatile tunes on Love & Revenge is titled “Serenity.” Make of that what you will, but don’t spend too much time thinking about it. You’ll miss the next couple songs.
Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard and Quatuor Bozzini — Colliding Bubbles: Surface Tension and Release (Important)
Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard is a composer based in Copenhagen. On his latest EP he joins forces with the premiere Canadian string quartet for new music, Quatuor Bozzini, to create a piece that deals with the perception of bubbles replicating the human experience. In addition to the harmonics played by the strings, the players are required to play harmonicas at the same time. At first blush, this might sound like a gimmick, but the conception of the piece as instability and friction emerging from continuous sound, like bubbles colliding in space and, concurrently, the often tense unpredictability of the human experience, makes these choices instead seem organic and well-considered. As the piece unfolds, the register of the pitch material makes a slow decline from the stratosphere to the ground floor with a simultaneous long decrescendo. The quartet are masterful musicians, unfazed by the challenge of playing long bowings and long-breathed harmonica chords simultaneously. The resulting sound world is shimmering, liquescent, and, surprising in its occasional metaphoric bubbles popping.
The Ophelias — Ribbon EP (self-released)
Ribbon is stormy, scathing and often quite beautiful. “Soft and Tame,” the EP’s emotional center, is all three. It begins wistfully: easy acoustic guitar strums and Andrea Gutmann Fuentes’ layered violin, nostalgic and close to sweet. Vocalist Spencer Peppet also starts slow, talking us through the aimless sensory motions of missing someone – “the sun on my cheek/as I walk around/I pick up a pear/I put it down/the radio plays a song we loved.” It doesn’t take long, however, for the skies to darken and the scene to become bleaker. By the line “the hollow sound/my jugular makes as it rolls around,” Mic Adams’s foreboding drums and a percussive creep of electric guitar have stalked in. And by the time Peppet has shown us “an overturned bus on the highway,” heard a“tornado warning” and told her subject to “stay the fuck away” for the second time, the band has built to a blown-out, climactic frenzy, the violin finding operatic heights over mammoth cymbal crashes.
In her review of The Ophelias’ last album, Crocus, Jennifer Kelly described Peppet as sounding “like she’s tilting her chin up and squaring her shoulders.” Likewise on Ribbon, where the band seems resigned to but also quite prepared for a fight. If “Soft and Tame” is aimed to knock “love in southern Ohio” down for good, then “Rind,” the final song, may tell us why they’re in the ring at all. At a brief break in the dynamic, flowering arrangement — it could be a particularly bucolic Magnetic Fields instrumental, especially in Gutmann Fuentes’ spry riffs — Peppet bursts out, “There you go!/On tour with my hometown friends/fucking score/they must have all forgotten!/Look back at what I tolerated.” There’s more to the story, but Peppet pulls back from the fray, settling things ominously: “to name it/makes your life/a little complicated.” Whatever “it” is, The Ophelias seem to have landed their punch. I don’t think I’ve heard more cutting, triumphant “Oohs” than those that end the song and Ribbon’s multifaceted fury with it.
Paperniks — Oxygen Tank Flipper 7-inch (Market Square)
Jason Henn is a master of catchy psychedelic punk. Honey Radar, his highest profile outfit, has unfurled a constant stream of hook-laden gems for well over a decade. Paperniks is his newest guise, a solo home recording project that amplifies the Guided by Voices meets Syd Barrett vibe of Honey Radar and doses it with nuggets of guitar noise. This tiny slab of wax is the sophomore Paperniks outing, following a single-sided lathe cut that strayed toward the clamorous edge of the octopus’s garden. On display are a pair of tunes that bear a striking resemblance to Honey Radar. “Oxygen Tank Flipper” is a groovy dose of psych replete with a catchy riff and a roller coaster bassline. Handclaps up the catchiness factor, as does Henn’s honey sweet sigh. “Essex Poem Dial” is a punky, garage-inspired tune. Henn’s reverb-soaked vocal hides inside the propulsive guitar chime. A noise interlude leads to a mellow vignette that slowly fades away. Paperniks showcases Henn’s boisterous side, and the music is certainly engaging, so hopefully there are more songs on the way soon.
Ribbon Stage — Hit with the Most (Perennial/K)
Ribbon Stages hits the giddy sweet spot between punk and pop, their raucous guitar-drums-bass racket pounding on sweet, wistful little songs. The mixture varies with some cuts veering into the snaggle-toothed dream pop of, say, the Jeanines, while others rage harder and more dissonantly. “Stone Heart Blue,” the single, pulls the drums way up in the mix and lets distorted guitars and murmured vocals do battle attention behind them. The result is an uncanny balance of urgency, angst and solace, which is exactly what you want from pop-leaning punk. “Hearst” pushes slashing tangling guitar racket up to the foreground, letting a billowing squall spill over crisp drums and shout-sung vocals, while “Sulfate” lets a sighing romantic croon loose over boiling lavas of rock mayhem. Nice.
Rio Da Yung OG — Rio Circa 2020 (Boyz Ent)
youtube
This is exactly what the title says: a compilation of Rio songs stashed on the label’s HDD, no more, no less. No filler but no hits either. The tape has a “Circa 2020” feel to it, reminding us of when Rio did what he wanted with no shades of doom hanging over the songs. It’s unlike the music he wrote after the trial when he knew he had to do some time. There’s a little bit of everything in here: three songs with RMC Mike, two tracks featuring Louie Ray, a song on a Sav beat, a song on an Enrgy beat and a song on a Primo beat. Yet it’s hardly enough to last us until Rio is free.
Spirits Rejoice—S-T (Fredriksberg)
Spirits Rejoice! by Spirits Rejoice
A remastered reissue of a 1978 recording, Spirits Rejoice captures boundary-crossing South African jazz scene, which touches on fusion, rock, funk, soul, disco Latin and African sounds. The ensemble includes some of that time and place’s pre-eminent jazz musicians, Sipho Gumede of the fluid, loping bass lines, breezy, insouciant reeds-man Robbie Jansen, South African pioneering percussionist Gilbert Matthews, keyboardist Mervyn Africa and a very young Paul Peterson on electric guitar. The music is ebullient and clearly tilted towards pop accessibility, and the gleaming sheen of 1970s often dilutes its heat and fury. This is especially true on “Happy and in Love” which could double as a lost Earth Wind and Fire cut. Elsewhere, though, as in “Woza Uzo Kudanisa Nathi,” fervid polyrhythms, tight squalls of sax and an exhilarating call and response light up the groove, fusing African chants with a swaggering samba rhythm. And “Papa’s Funk,” is just what it sounds like—a slithery, stuttery, visceral bass-led swagger that bubbles and smolders and twitches in a universal funk.
Various Artists — GmBH: An Anthology of Music for Fashion Shows 2016 – 2023, Volume 1 (Studio LABOUR)
GmbH: An Anthology of Music for Fashion Shows 2016-2023 Vol. 1 by Various Artists
LABOUR is a multimedia project of Iranian musician Farahnaz Hatam and American percussionist/composer Colin Hacklander. Based in Berlin, the duo has collaborated widely and eclectically to produce soundtracks for sustainable, underground fashion house GmBH. This compilation collates 12 examples and showcases a variety of work from an international roster of artists including Iraqi-British oud player Khyam Allami, Turkish born DJ Nene H, Kuwaiti musician Fatimi Al Qadiri, American performance artist MJ Harper and Indonesian noise duo Gabber Modus Operandi. The thread that runs through all this is cross pollinations between genre, geography, and chronology. Allami’s oud plays against LABOUR’s electronic washes and synthetic percussion with each element emphasizing and interrogating differences in modality and structure. On “White Noise” LABOUR contrast a 16th century harpsichord piece with static and effects dissolving into a robotic club beat which ends up evoking a cyborg Hooked on Classics. Their collaboration with Harper on the spoken word “ablution” is a reflection on love, religion, and abnegation with elements of gospel, eastern and creeping doom ambience. The Anthology has much of interest but is essential for Belgian composer Billy Bultheel’s “YLEM” featuring German countertenor Steve Katona who soars incandescent from a backdrop of industrial grind. The contrast between earthly weight of the music and radiant purity of the voice is breathtaking.
Vertonen — taif’ shel (Oxidation)
taif' shel by Vertonen
Give the Oxidation label credit for radical truthfulness. One of the bummers of our time is the frequency with which folks on BandCamp and elsewhere will call a short-run, blue or green-faced disc a CD when they are selling you a CD-R. Oxidation, on the other hand, is named after the process that will eventually render its products unplayable. On to the sounds. Vertonen is Blake Edwards, who has been working around the edges of sound for over 30 years. On taif’ shel, he displays absolute mastery over the combination of collected, electronically generated and carefully edited sounds. His skill rests on three qualities; knowing where to place sounds, knowing how long to let them carry on and having some pretty good ideas about which ones to use in the first place. He can make a drone of infinite (but never unnecessary) complexity, or punctuate flipping film-ends with a precisely situated, never repeated sequence of chops and splices, to name just two examples found on this impermanent but thoroughly rewarding disc.
Villagers — That Golden Time (Domino)
youtube
That Golden Time is Villagers’ sixth album. The Conor O’Brien led project presents its most eclectic outing to date. A number of the songs are afforded pop treatment, consisting of memorable tunes and gentle, polished arrangements. The double-tracked vocals on “First Responder” is a case in point, about a relationship fragmenting while the singing coalesces, an interesting tension. “No Drama,” initially pared down to piano and O’Brien’s laconic vocals, eventually adds a coterie of Irish traditional instruments. “Keepsake” veers closer to mid-tempo electronica, with overlaid synth repetitions and treated vocals. The title track employs sustained violin lines, played by Peter Broderick, and an intricate form with supple harmonic shifts. “Brother Hen,” on the other hand, recalls the folk influences present from Villagers’ beginning. The diversity is diverting, even though That Golden Time feels like a collection of singles instead of an album statement.
Dating Ian Malcolm Would Include
Tumblr media
Summary: Some Ian Malcolm headcanons to tide you over until seeing the new Jurassic Park movie comes out. A little short, but I might make more stuff like this if people like these ones.
Pairing(s): Ian Malcolm X GN!Reader
Characters: Ian Malcolm, Reader
Link: Jurassic Park Masterlist
RATING: PG
______________________________________________________________
✨ Being always on your toes. He's a pretty spontaneous man and always likes to be on the go. Whether that is going to remote parts of the world for trekking through the wilds, visiting the Las Vegas casinos, or going skydiving.
✨ Feelings like the center of his world. Dr. Malcolm really likes to lay it on with his partners in order to prolong the relationship as much as possible. Him being extremely charismatic also helps.
✨ He'll shower you in gifts, like trips with him around the world and taking you out for extravagant dinners.
✨ Showing you the interesting and unseen parts of the world you never would have thought of being there, is something Ian highly enjoys. Seeing the look on your face, of wonder and joy is something that makes his heart swell.
✨ However, Ian is someone who always needs to be doing something new, which means that trying to keep up with him can sometimes be exhausting.
✨ Ian is also reluctant to really commit since he's already been married more than once, and worries that you will just become another bitter ex of his.
✨ You two will really need to be compatible and communicate if you want to make this relationship work. Especially encouraging Ian to confront his commitment issues.
✨ Getting along with his daughter Kelly will be incredibly important if your going to be partners long term. She's also pretty picky considering her father has brought home a lot of partners.
✨ Putting up with some very long conversations about the chaos and balance which can be found within the world of mathematics is something your going to have to do. If you like maths, that's a major plus, since Ian will be interested in your opinion on certain topics.
✨ He's pretty physically affectionate and is definitely comfortable with PDA. Although he's not gonna get to hot and heavy in public.
✨ Mostly Ian wants to make sure that everyone knows your his partner and that he's proud to have you by his side. Sometimes that means having his hand around your waist while you talk to others or leaning into you slightly.
✨ Has a tendency to get jealous if he thinks someone is flirting with you, but is more likely to politely bring this up to you in private then anything else.
✨ Very much a goofball and doesn't tend to take much of anything seriously. This can be annoying or really endearing.
✨ Does know when to take things serious in a crisis and has a pretty good head on his shoulders, which is pretty hot.
What to Expect When You're Expecting - Dr. Alan Grant x Reader || Fluff
Summary: You tell Alan that you're expecting a baby, shortly after the deadly events of Jurassic Park 1993 take place.
Word Count: 811
Date Posted: 08.25.2022
TW: Mentions of nausea and sickness, pregnancy, and first aid to wounds.
Note: This is pretty short, it's also my first time writing for Jurassic Park. Admittedly I do tend to struggle when following the direct plot of a movie or show. If this does not meet your expectations, I truly apologize and would love another request if you'll take a chance on me 💚
|| Masterlist || Request Here || Fandoms/ Characters || Req by Anon
Tumblr media
The island was beautiful when you arrived, though the landing was a bit rough. You gripped Alan’s hand through the turbulence. You’d been nauseous all week, and the rocking of the helicopter was certainly not helping.
You were a paleobotanist team with your sister, working with the highly respected Alan Grant. That’s how you met, though you were on boarded late. Turns out that it does well to finish college first. You were easily 8 years younger than Dr. Grant, but that didn’t stop him from falling for your energy and passion anyway. In fact your presumed innocence was one of the things that drew him to you, all the things about the world that you could learn from him. Three years together and you were affianced. Grant’s proposal was simple, and he had your engagement ring carved out of bone.
You wondered slightly how you’d ended up here, on dinosaur island - Jurassic Park as John Hammond called it. It was an opportunity you couldn’t pass up, and you doubted Alan would go with out you.
“You okay, Y/n?” Alan asked you as he helped you from the helicopter.
“Yeah, just a little motion sick, I’ll be okay.” You affirmed, though you knew the truth. You’d been sick every morning for the past week, and the test you took while Alan and Ellie were talking to Hammond proved what you’d already suspected. You were pregnant with Alan’s baby. Alan gave you a suspect look, but let you be.
When you came across the sick triceratops, just like Ellie, you couldn’t resist your investigation. Wanting to stay behind and figure out the source of the sickness.
“Wait, Alan,” You tugged on his shirt, pulling him aside, “Before you continue with the tour. I’m -“
You took a deep breath.
“What is it?” Alan caressed your cheek.
“I’m pregnant.” You blurted. You weren’t sure how Alan was going to take it, as far as you know he never wanted kids. His face was expressionless.
“That is unexpected,” He nodded, “Okay. Stay with Ellie. We’ll talk more when I get back okay?”
You took a deep breath again, watching him rejoin Dr. Malcolm and the tour group.
“What happened there?” Ellie asked, noticing the shift in your attitude when you joined her.
“It’s nothing, Ellie,” You forced a smile, “Just not fond of separating is all.”
You were safely back at the compound when the shit hit the fan. A t-rex had escaped its paddock and god knows what else. Immediately you panicked.
“Alan is still out there, Ellie,” You cried, crocodile tears pouring down your face, “I need to go find him, I can’t let my baby grow up without a father.”
“You’re pregnant!” Ellie gasped. “You’re staying here. You first priority is the safety of your baby, stay here.”
You nodded. Though you were never the type to sit around. You were perpetually pacing until your sister came back, empty handed. John was off hit wits worried for his grand children.
“Ian, what happened to my fiancé?” You begged of him.
“He went to save the kids, before I got knocked out. We haven’t found any evidence that he or the children are hurt.” Ian assured as you went about tending to his wounds.
“It’s a good thing I went through those first aid certification courses. You never know what’ll happen in a dig site.” You mused to yourself, trying to take your mind off your worries.
“I’m sure Dr. Grant will be fine.”
You hated waiting, not being able to do much to help aside from tending to wounds. They’d moved the group to an emergency bunker, making you feel more useless to the situation by the minute. When you weren’t tending to Ian you were rubbing your sick belly, or throwing up in the nearest receptacle. You were sick with your baby, sick from the stress you were under, and most importantly sick from the worry about the love of your life and your sister who’d gone off again to save the day.
You cheered to yourself as they managed to get everything back online. Soon enough, you, John Hammond, and Ian were in a jeep heading to rescue the rest of your surviving party to be airlifted the fuck out of dodge. You embraced Alan fully once he joined you in the jeep, sobbing in relief.
“I’d thought I’d lost you, Alan. I thought I’d never get to see you again,” You sobbed holding on to him. He held you equally tightly, soothing your fears.
“I wouldn’t leave you to raise our baby on your own,” He whispered kissing your forehead. You sobbed harder.
“You changed your mind?”
“My dear, my mind was made up the moment you told me,” He rubbed your back, “I was shocked is all and I’ve had my eyes opened to the possibilities.”
BIOGRAPHY
PAST
RICHMOND, LONDON, ENGLAND, 1988.
A home birth in a time when home births were not in fashion, Rosemary Hayes gives birth to two beautiful children, fraternal twins, August and April Hayes. They are the only children she has, and she is tremendously happy with that.  Two perfect babies of her own.    Malcolm Hayes doesn’t show up until after the twins are born, and his wife smells the bottle of vodka he drank hours previously.
Rosemary is an attentive, loving parent, and her husband? The exact opposite. He stops in to say hello, but there is a look in his eyes that resembles regret.  He is in finance, and although they have a good life, he is not satisfied, and it shows.  He works, he drinks, and he comes home and takes out his regret on his wife, and when they get older, his children too.
The twins, like most, are inseparable and protective of each other. Where one goes, so does the other.  But their personalities are wildly different. April loves to dance, she was spinning circles around her brother as soon as she could walk. And August? He could be found amongst his mother’s bookshelves far too often, but the two made quite a pair. They relied on each other when the house was filled with their father’s anger, and their mother’s sadness, hidden underneath bright smiles and blueberry pancakes.
When their dad dies, the twins are just fifteen,  one would simply think that this is devastating, but the whole house feels lighter after the funeral, like something has been lifted from them. His death, however, does not erase the years of damage his life caused.
Augusts’ panic attacks start soon after the funeral, waking up gasping for air in his bedroom. The next time it happens, he is in school, and the ringing in his ears and heart palpitations make him sure he is going to pass out.
A diagnosis comes easily, and he’s prescribed little white pills that are supposed to make it better, and they do help, mostly.
Their lives continue, although it seems outrageous most of the time.  Their father’s life insurance makes sure they are comfortable, though not rich, so they can finish school, and their mother takes a job at a library.  April starts acting, and August is there for every performance she puts on, on their eighteenth birthday, when they blow out candles on individual cakes, she tells him she’s going to New York for drama school, and he drops the bomb that he’s staying here because he got into Oxford on a full ride. They spend their summer days working, saving up money for school, and the nights at clubs, at parties, on the couch watching their favorite films, always together, not knowing when the next time they’d see each other would be.
When it’s time for April to leave, her school year starting earlier, they embrace so tightly at the train station that he feels like he can’t breathe. He watches as her tears, ones that match their mother's, fall across her cheeks.
He had a panic attack that night but says nothing to anyone.
October comes, and it’s his first semester as a Literature Major. His roommate at Oriel College is a guy named William,  and he’s not sure he likes him until one night he hears him on the phone with his dad, and offers to walk with him and have a cigarette, a listening ear. They become best friends, choosing to room together for their next four years here.  He is the first boy that August kisses, and his first official boyfriend by the time they both graduate.
He parties at school because that's what you’re supposed to do at university, but he knows his scholarship depends on him staying in good academic standing.
He graduates with honors and an acceptance to study for dual degrees at Yale.  He thinks of course, about what an honor this is, but also, that he would also be closer to his sister, who he has only seen at holidays the past four years.
He, William,  and a group of friends spend the summer in Italy before they move on, some for other degrees, others for jobs.  He sets off for New Haven.
Because of a shitty little job, he worked for four years at a bookstore, he manages enough to live in a shitty little apartment with roommates while he goes to school.  It is the hardest thing he does, and yet he takes on more, a nighttime job as a bartender to make ends meet.  Yet, the ends don’t meet. Finding his way into being an escort isn’t a path he plans on taking, but when a regular customer at the bar mentions it in passing, he finds himself on his first date, which pays enough to cover rent in one night. He quits the bar, giving himself more time to work towards his degrees.
Graduating at twenty-eight years old with a master's and a PhD in literature feels surreal. His mother and sister are in the crowd cheering him on. He drops another bomb, that he’s been offered a job at Columbia, a space has opened up in their Literature department, and he’s taken the job. His sister, who has been working on Broadway, mostly ensemble, cries again, happy tears this time.
PRESENT
He does not expect one day, eight years into teaching at Columbia, eight years into living in New York, to have a curly-haired six-year-old brunette standing at the door of his loft, and yet, here he is.  Her mother, an old client, has decided to go off and pursue her dream of traveling the world without her daughter. She’s signed away parental rights, and he is listed on the birth certificate.
DNA tests and legal battles, and one day he’s painting his guest bedroom pink, replacing the queen-sized bed with a white twin-sized day bed with flower-shaped pillows.  He’s making his mother’s blueberry pancakes in the morning before work, and paying a nanny to take a little girl named Lavender to school, and this all feels far too crazy for his life. Getting into the routine of being a single dad to a tenacious little girl isn’t easy, but he thinks he’s doing okay.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
his twin sister April, a broadway actress, and his best friend!
his ex-boyfriend but still best friend, William!
eventually, Lavender's mother!
the nanny! I'd say he'd probably hire someone 25+ because he'd want someone experienced since he has zero experience with kids.
exes of all sorts!
please give this idiot a solid friend group!
Thanks for the tag @i-will-bite! This oughtta be fun.
1. Favorite OC
Oh boy. That is so dang hard. I’m probably going to go with Orin. She started as a self-insert but her story has really just ballooned into such a lovely, juicy tragedy that I can’t even describe. Orin is really the kind of person we all aspire to be. Loving, courageous, warm. She’s very invested in family, even moreso since her retirement as General of the Clones Rights Coalition. The sense of dread hanging over her is something so special to write. To describe nameless fear. It really pushes me.
2. Newest OC
Uhhh weeeeeeell… probably the Iktochi I’m planning. I don’t really have a place for her. But I like the idea of foreknowing, that subtle sense of heightened awareness that their species has. Also the idea for an Iktochi came from Darth Cognis, from the Bane books.
3. Oldest OC
This one’s easy. S’Lus Galenn, my Ishi Tib medical sage on Naboo. He’s a sweet old feller that I HC sounds like Shadow from Homeward Bound. He’s not actually an Ishi Tib, but a being wearing the form of one. He’s part of a cosmic race known as The Born. Beings of pure Force energy who existed before the galaxy formed. He’s very caring and concerned with helping those less fortunate around Naboo, those living in the slums hidden by all the grand architecture and waterfalls.
4. Meanest OC
Ithsa Dooku. What a jerkface. What a Kevin. What a waste of good genetics. Ithsa is the offspring of Komari Vossa and Darth Maul. Don’t worry they’re not a couple; Vossa basically agreed to allow Maul to complete a mission unhindered by trading leaving him be for having sex with her. (Listen to Lockdown, that woman’s slavering after him.) Maul agreed, the act being completely meaningless and truthfully abhorrent to him. Later in life, he’ll see it as SA. The son fathered in that moment is not his son. Regardless of how similarly they look and even act. Ithsa resents his father’s opinion of him and really comes to hate Maul’s chosen child, whom he adores almost to a fault: Happenstance. Boy’s got MAJOR attitude issues.
5. Softest OC
Vagren Dragos. Him just a lil man. Just itty. He’s a very small, very impressionable little Zabrak babby, the Padawan of @crc-jedi-knight-serushna’s Serushna Leliana. To be only like. 6. He’s strong enough to have earned his tattoos before having to leave Dathomir. As a force-sensitive male, he’d have been killed had Nightsisters gotten hold of him. His leaving was better off for him and his village ultimately but in no way easy. He’s gotten his kyber crystal though and he’s learning How To Jedi very quickly. Though… he’s starting to see that not all Jedi are as wonderful as his Master and Grandmaster. And that’s a shame.
6. Aloof/Standoffish OC
That’ll be my Clone OC Fitz, CT-52622. He’s been dishonorably discharged from the GAR but the Jedi who he serves beside as Special Consultant was a Padawan during the war. Rae Dagani lost her Master on Geonosis and Fitz refused to go fight in the battle while she and her sister-Padawan held their Master’s body and wept, undefended and alone. He stayed with them against orders and was punished for insubordination. But they repaid the favor and he works with them as a freelancer and adopted member of Kitchen Sink Squad now. He’s very restrained except with his baby girl, Rae. He’s her safe hiding place and he can let down his walls with her.
7. Dumbest OC
HA. Ummmm. Hm. I think that might be a BD unit OC I’m planning. Just a ditzy little thing that would exasperate BD-1 half to death.
8. Smartest OC
That’s probably Ee’an, another of the Kitchen Sink Squad I co-own with @hotshot9. Those fellas are based on favorite characters of ours from books and movies and he’s based on Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park. He’s all about philosophy and science, and he’ll debate you until he’s blue in the face. He’s got a massive flitterfly tattoo on his throat, wears his hair long to his shoulders, and favors leather jackets now that he’s out of armor mostly anymore. You’ll also find a trail of varactyl tracks winding up one leg and arm along an old scar he got riding one of them.
9. Besties IRL OC
Probably either Orin or Thess Sha. Thess owns a coffee shop on Naboo and breeds blarths. She’s very friendly and loves making people’s lives easier with good food and good drinks. (And free tshirts!)
Hmmmm….
@thesitharts @crc-jedi-knight-serushna @smoooothbrain @alexeithegoat @sweetiepie08 @stardustbee @eloquentmoon @eliduremaybe and anybody else who wants to join in!
Rewatched Jurassic Park
Great movie
Several thoughts
1. Ian Malcolm is hilarious
2. Reluctant father figure Alan Grant so precious new blorbo. Also i love that as much as he "hates" kids, doesn't want to be around them, scares them at the beginning. He starts caring for them, being very gentle AS SOON AS there is ANY sign of danger. Like when they were walking and Lex stumbled - he immediately helped her up, asked if she was ok, and this was before the shitshow started.
3. Lex is very fit for someone who supposedly stays inside all day on her computer (according to her brother. I guess he was exaggerating haha)
4. Lex and Tim have a VERY sibling dynamic yes crunchy nom nom
5. John Hammond "spared no expense" except hiring enough people and paying them enough money (specifically the IT department being just Nedry. Yes he deserved a raise)
6. Very good use of foreshadowing
7. "This is a UNIX system! I know this!"
Also this entire sequence was funny: from the hilariously laggy and ridiculous GUI to the pretty accurate experience of working with Linux (where's that file? I think this is the file! Oh no it's not.. where is it??)
8. So many good/iconic lines, so many funny ones, and actually so many memes that originated here!
i realized i never posted Bo’s timeline here and like ,,,, all my jwcc moots are on here so idk why i never did that but
anyway
here it is in all its glory:
Bo’s Official Timeline
Tumblr media
Warning, MAJOR Spoilers Ahead for the entire Jurassic Park/World Series ( All 6 movies + 5 seasons of the TV show + minor mentions of other canon material )
Below is Bo’s canon timeline (JP/W incidents included)
1971: Bo’s father is born
1989: Bo’s father begins work at InGen
1993: The Jurassic Park incident
1995: Ian Malcolm goes public
1997: San Diego Incident
1998: Bo’s Mother is transferred from Masrani technology to InGen’s department
1999: Bo is born
2001: Eric Kirby Rescue
2003: Bo’s parents get married
2005: Bo starts elementary school.
2008:  Bo confides in his father about his feelings towards his gender. He decides not to tell his mother yet, but has begun to socially transition anyway.
2010: Bo starts middle school.
2011: Bo comes out as trans to his mother.
2012: The I.B.R.I.S. project begins. Bo’s parents begin to argue almost daily.
2013: Bo starts Highschool
2014: Bo’s legal name is changed, despite his mother’s protest.
January 2015: Bo goes through top surgery, and enters recovery.
April 2015: Bo’s father officially files for divorce, but it is a contested by Bo’s mom
October 2015: Bo’s Mother is offered a full time position on Isla Nublar, and she leaves their home in California
November 2015: Bo’s father quiets his job with InGen, and makes Bo download a bunch of apps. Bo thinks his dad is being paranoid, and throws them into a folder on his phone that he never opens
Dec 13, 2017: Bo’s father informs him they’re going to be joining his mother for a vacation over winter break. Bo’s father also gifts Bo a few items, including a solar powered charger. He tells Bo that they’ll be leaving Jurassic World as soon as they can, and if it was up to him they wouldn’t be going at all. (Bo believes this is due to His mom being transphobic, and mildly racist, but really it’s due to his father’s knowledge due to his job at InGen )
Dec 15, 2015: Bo and his dad join his mother on Isla Nublar for a family vacation
Dec 22, 2015: Bo gets into a fight with his mother, and by extension his father. He steals his mother’s access card, and goes into the Restricted Area of the island. The 2015 Incident occurs. Bo gets… into a lot of trouble basically lol and ends up passing out in a ditch.
Dec 23, 2015: Bo wakes up, being attacked by a compy. He kicks it, before stomping on its leg. He proceeds to do his best to take care of his injury, before his guilt causes him to take care of the compy as well.
Dec 24-31, 2015: Bo spends the time cleaning his wound, going between sleeping and healthcare of him and the compy.
Jan-March 2015: Bo is surviving with the compys. Manages to escape E750 Multiple times, barely. Also has a few encounters with Blue, the raptor, although they have more amicable encounters. Also during this time, Bo encounters many dead bodies, as well as finding a wrecked campsite. Here he discovers a rotting dinosaur head, realizing that if he does find people, they’re likely to be poachers before there are rescue teams.
Jan-March 2015: Bo’s mother moves to New York, and his father moves back to Arizona to be closer to his family.
June 2016: Bo tries to approach the unmarked helicopters for help, but instead has guns pointed at him. He runs away after this, solidifying what he already believed: No one good comes to Isla Nublar.
July-December 2016: Bo has a few almost run-ins. He sees helicopters, and hears people a few times. Each time, he scopes it out before approaching. He sees what appears to be people experimenting on dinosaurs, and quickly realizes that they will not be of help to him. It’s more likely that they’d kill him first.
With this, Bo resigns himself to live on the island with the dinosaurs, and also begins to formulate better ways of communication with Arrow. He also begins to fill his time with study of the other species, and attempts to befriend them the way he did the compys. The easier to befriend are species that are similar; such as the Gallimimus. To a lesser extent, even the other Theropods can be communicated with, and reasoned with through Arrow, as Bo found out by dealing with Rexy, Blue, the Dilophosaurus, the Baryonyx, and to some extent, even the Allosaurus and Ceratosaurus
Bo actually creates enough of a relationship with these creatures that he can easily pass through their territory, simply by tossing them a snack or two on his way through. He also begins to record and use the vocalizations of Arrow to communicate with the other dinosaur species.
February 2017: Mount Sibo is classified as Active. Meaning: earthquakes are happening often. Bo is aware of the sudden change of the island, and does his best to keep himself and his pack safe. Although, he ran into many issues, and typically they ended up living in the ruins of Main Street, coexisting with Rexy.
March 2017: Claire forms the Dinosaur protection group. Bo’s father gets in contact with Darius Bowman, as well as Benjamin Pincus.
June 2017: a group of researchers are deployed to the island, to observe from a distance and see how the active volcano is effecting life of the dinosaurs. It is during this that they film what appears to be a human running alongside a pack of Gallimimus, this video is posted online and goes viral, Brooklyn is one of the people who help it to go viral. This leads to further investigation, and causes public outrage. Specifically outrage at InGen, Masrani Corp, and BioSyn. BioSyn specifically gets a large chunk of the public outcry due to them having sent teams to the island for “research purposes”
July 2017: A specific BioSyn rescue team is dispatched, along with rescue teams from the American Military and Bo is finally saved from the island. Although, there is a major complication in that he refuses to leave behind his compy. Refusing to get onto any recuse helicopter without her. When he arrives in Costa Rica, the government refuses to let him take the dinosaur, and the American Government also refuse to accept it, causing a massive standstill in what was quickly becoming International news. Ian Malcolm ends up being called due to the situation, and he tries to convince Bo to leave the dinosaur behind. Bo, instead, manages to convince Ian Malcolm to be on his side in this argument, stating that, he knows he can not control Arrow, and that he did not want to anyhow. He wanted to give her a life, where she was allowed to exist. It was not her fault she was created, anymore than it was Ian’s fault that Jurassic Park failed. Ian ends up advocating for Bo, and taking him under his wing to a certain extent.
August 2017: Bo is reunited with his father, his mother not showing up, claiming that “my daughter is dead, and she should have stayed dead”
September 2017: Mount Sibo is classified as a active threat
June 2018: Bo is being rehabilitated, going through school, and travels giving basically TED-Talks on dinosaur behavior. He is in touch with the Nublar Six, and considers them friends. He also has weekly communication with Ian Malcolm and Ellie Sattler, both who help him with his trauma from Nublar along with his therapist
June 2018, The Outbreak in California happens.
After June 2018-2022: Bo is very desensitized to dinosaurs over all, and is known for his communication projects. Although, he doesn’t have any real standings in the scientific community since he barely graduated high school, however, a select group of minds often check in with him: Ian Malcolm, Mae Turner, Ellie Sattler, and others who work closely with them. This also spikes interest in BioSyn and other biological companies, however. Basically, Bo is working on furthering his study of and communication with Arrow, and other dinosaurs. He is in touch with Ben Pincus, as well as Doctor Mae Turner, who he often exchanges notes with.
2021: Sometime early in the year, Bo is approached by Lewis Dodgson to work with BioSyn in an attempt to recapture Rexy, and makes a poor attempt to placate with Bo’s activism. Bo actively lashes out at both of these, and actually almost gets arrested from punching Dodgson, and giving him a black eye. Dodgson decides not to press charges after this incident leads to him being in direct contact with Ian Malcolm. But this does get Bo banned from BioSyn facilities for life. (He doesn’t mind.)
Post 2022: Bo’s biggest project after the events of movie three, (and the downfall of yet another company, as well as the almost famine), is speaking alongside Darius Bowman. While Darius speaks about living with dinosaurs now that they’ve been forced into our world, Bo talks about how companies like InGen, Mantah Corp, and BioSyn not only caused the dinosaur issue, but actively displaced native populations, and destroyed ecosystems and that yes, by creating dinosaurs, we’ve played god, but humans were playing God long before that and that we as a species need to learn how to coexist. Not just with dinosaurs, but with each other too. (Bo also continues working and exchanging notes with Ben Pincus and Mae Turner, although he less vocal about his work on communicating with dinosaurs)
Auditions and Decisions
Having had a few interested parties for the role of Malcolm, Ben and I decided to sit down and review their self-tapes. We whittled it down to 4 potential candidates for the role. I sent out a Google form to the auditionees and offered them some dates and times for auditions. I booked a room and organised for a couple of people to stand in for the role of Will and also to film the auditions.
My notes on the auditions:
Gordon J Miller:
Introduction: Gordon resonated with the character due to his personal connection as a parent with a son who plays football.
Audition: Initially, he portrayed the character with a comforting and empathetic tone, quickly establishing an emotional connection with the audience. However, during the second audition, he appeared more nervous and less connected with the character and audience.
Questions: Gordon measures success in life by a sense of fulfillment and contentment, and he learned to trust his instincts after setbacks. He relates personally to the character of Malcolm, understanding the importance of being there for his son while allowing him to make his own mistakes.
Notes: Gordon has significant experience in film productions but was not offered a biscuit during the auditions.
Liam Hughes:
Introduction: Liam seemed knowledgeable about football and demonstrated confidence during his introduction.
Audition: He delivered a strong performance, exuding confidence and control over the character's space.
Questions: Liam measures success by ensuring his kids' basic needs are met, and he returned to acting to fulfill his childhood dream.
Notes: Liam expressed interest in previous works and demonstrated a calm and comfortable demeanor throughout the audition.
Mark Harvey:
Introduction: Mark appeared calm and comfortable during his introduction, although his phone use was slightly distracting.
Audition: He created a natural and controlled performance, displaying good pauses and a soft-spoken demeanor.
Questions: Mark measures success by achieving stability in life and has overcome setbacks, such as a divorce, to pursue acting.
Notes: Mark demonstrated a warm and comforting portrayal of the character, showing interest in understanding the character's backstory.
Ian Plunkett:
Introduction: Ian was attentive and connected with the story due to his personal experiences with his son.
Audition: His performance felt rushed and lacked clear enunciation, but it was still natural.
Questions: Ian measures success by finding happiness and comfort in life and has learned from setbacks such as the passing of his fathers.
Notes: Ian's second audition also felt rushed, but he maintained control over the scene and displayed a good switch in emotion.
We have decided to cast Ian for multiple reasons. When Ben directed him to slow down his speed and take another approach on the role he followed the directions easily and well. He had a calming presence even though he has a more intimidating appearance which we believed suited the role of Malcolm well. As a guy who at first glance wouldn't be someone you would want to mess with but when he smiles you know he has a kind soul. He looked closest to what Ben and I believed the character of Malcolm would look like (essentially a football dad stereotype). We believe this would resonate with our audience more. We are really happy with our decision and we are excited to see him perform.
stand-alone portrayal of jurassic park’s KELLY MALCOLM, penned by brina. mutuals only. crossover & oc friendly. new to verse & platform. mdni.
carrd | twitter | rules | psd
set two years after the events of jurassic park iii, kelly is a comp sci major at university of texas at austin. she rejoined the gymnastics team at her school and became their top gymnast, and now competes on her college’s gymnastics team. she hopes to make it to the olympics one day.
kelly has retained a good relationship with her father, ian malcolm since the second film. her mother has moved to paris and only visits her daughter on occasion, which left ian to raise kelly mostly on his own. the things she witnessed on isla sorna had left her with trauma that she has seen a therapist for since getting back home. despite this, kelly is an independent individual unafraid of standing up for herself.
thinking about a Pacific Rim/Jurassic Park crossover
Alan Grant, the senior consultant who's really damn tired with this war, and wants to dropkick the half of the younger generation who think kaiju are ~cool~. Also very much wants to go back to his dig in Montana, but the second kaiju war is dominated by dinosaur-esque kaiju so he's the expert and his advice is needed. Can't figure out how to turn on the fancy new touchscreen laptop so J-Tech hates him but will kill for his assistant who digitises all his notes.
Ellie Sattler, the hotshot rookie pilot who became a Ranger five years ago. At first, nobody thought she was going to get along with Ranger Gennaro. Despite their high compatibility on paper, Gennaro made a poor first impression on her, and Sattler held a bit of a grudge about it all - at least until they drifted as a test, and broke every high score in the simulator. That kind of fighting power couldn't be denied, and they agreed to work together for the common good. By now they're wonderful friends.
John Hammond, the Shatterdome Marshal. Through chains and chains of shell corps, he's supplying the Shatterdome with his own companies - intentionally giving bad supplies sometimes so they have to be ordered (and paid for) again. He's also connected to a ring of black market dealers who pay him handsomely for the right to be first on the scene when a kajiu is killed. Ultimately he plans to reveal, to a select few, the genetic manipulation at the heart of the kaiju, and offer them immunity, for a price. He expects this proof of prowess to lead to several lucrative genetic engineering contracts.
Ian Malcolm, one of the K-Science heads. He's the best at everything and that just makes him more insufferable. Figured out months ago what Hammond was doing but can't figure out a way to expose the truth without also bringing down the Shatterdome along the way. He's never really been one to keep his mouth shut, but he also can't do something that will leave this stretch of coastline unprotected.
Dennis Nedry, underpaid LOCCENT tech. He's been blackmailing Marshal Hammond for two years after finding out that kaiju were genetically engineered by one of Hammond's labs. He's about to sell genetic samples to a competitor... and it's about to get him in a lot of trouble.
Sarah Harding, kaiju ethologist. She's convinced that the best way to protect people is to find out how kaiju work and why they behave the way they do. Walls can be broken through and Jaegers can be beaten in battle - but what about sonar emitters that make it too painful for kaiju to make land or pheromones that draw them back out to sea?
Her father, Gerry Harding, is in charge of a team studying kaiju biology and trying to infer what kind of homeworld they came from, to better fight them. Supports his daughter's work but is worried that she's going to do something that puts her too far into harm's way. He certainly doesn't like Malcolm, either. Ever since the Ian-Sarah breakup, he's been firmly on Sarah's side. Just wait for them to see each other at one of the staff parties.
