In which an angel and a demon rendezvous in a carriage during Victorian England. I’d like to think Crowley would take Aziraphale to the opera or maybe to the British Museum. Or they could dine at the Ritz, or eat some angel cake and deviled egg like in the book. Or maybe, all of them one after another. Most likely the latter. Either way, it’s going to be an eventful night.

This is a submission to the good omens holiday exchange, and a gift to the dearest @fluffyschizofrankie, who requested Victorian England as a theme! When I read this, I just had to do it since I can’t pass up on the opportunity to draw them during this time period. I hope you like it! A @goodomensholidayswap gift for @burliforti! She said many things in her letter, but the words I latched on to were: Aziraphale, Crowley, fluff, historical setting, AU, fantasy. It’s obviously based on Norman Rockwell’s “Boy Reading Adventure Story” – when I saw it recently, I instantly knew I wanted to reinterpret it for the two of them.

I was very excited to be a pinch-hitter for the @goodomensholidayswap! This is a gift for @forlorn-kumquat. One of their prompts was "Aziraphale loves playing with Crowley's hair. Crowley loves having his hair played with. They can't actually talk about this like functional ethereal beings, and they think this level of contact is all they're allowed to have/want, so they keep inventing excuses to be able to touch/be touched by the other" which is the sort of thing I go absolutely batshit feral for.

Aziraphale had really been rather proud of how well he’d pulled everything together. After a few fact-finding missions that involved some very pleasant walks through St James’s Park (and one slightly less pleasant incident involving the local goose population), he located a quiet little corner out of the way of prying eyes. He'd gone to great lengths to pick out a truly outstanding Sauvignon blanc and packed it up along with the rest of the picnic in a very handsome wicker basket (which had been told, in no uncertain terms, to ensure its contents remain cold). The pair of them sat together on a tartan blanket, painstakingly rolled out into a neat square on the grass, with Crowley wearing the sort of smile that Aziraphale had grown accustomed to seeing on his face over the last few weeks. All things considered, it had been shaping up to be a perfect day.

And then it started to rain.  

“We should go on a date,” Aziraphale said, apropos of nothing.

Crowley froze midway through handing him a tumbler of scotch, drink dangling from his long fingers. Aziraphale plucked it from him and watched as he carefully sank back into his previous position on the sofa.

“What?”

As he settled in against the squashed sofa cushions, his knee came to rest ever so slightly against Aziraphale’s thigh. There’d been a lot of this in the three weeks since they’d stopped Armageddon, all this gentle touching and casual intimacy that Aziraphale had craved for Lord knows how long. He needed more of it.

“Oh, you know,” Aziraphale said, rubbing a thumb along the rim of his glass. “It’s what humans do when they… like each other.”

Crowley scrubbed his face with his hand and sighed. “Yes, I know what a date is, angel.” There was an agonising pause. A pair of unblinking yellow eyes pinned Aziraphale to the spot. Just as he was beginning to rather regret bringing it up, Crowley at last said, “Sure, that sounds, erm… yeah, that sounds good.”

Aziraphale knows he’s a solitary person. He knows Crowley may very well be his only true friend. He doesn’t mind this. He does, however, very much mind learning that his coworkers have a betting pool on whether he’ll be coming alone to the department holiday party next week. He especially minds when he learns that the reason there is a betting pool in the first place is because their intern, young Newton Pulsifer, is the only one naïve enough to believe Aziraphale might have a date.

In retaliation to a bet made against him, Aziraphale asks Crowley to be his date to the office holiday party. Certainly there are no flaws to be found in this plan. Certainly the secret love Aziraphale has been harboring for Crowley for the past several years won't be an issue. Certainly not.

During the taxi ride back to the bookshop, Aziraphale considered the many ways in which he’d left the Ritz over the years. The first time: contented and excited to tell Crowley about it, to perhaps share it with him. Several subsequent times: alone, but with the delightful memory of an afternoon or evening basking in Crowley’s company and attention. After that: with Crowley, walking through London, to the bookshop or to a museum, talking and sharing time. Once, eleven years ago: in Crowley’s Bentley for a night of drinking and plotting to avert the apocalypse. 

This was the first time they’d taken a cab together.
