Top 23 of 2023
Have you been aching to get your hot little hands on 52 weeks of data around original posts, likes, reblogs, and searches, all weighted and ranked and tied up into categories with a nice little bow on top? Well, today’s your day! It should come as no surprise that Artists on Tumblr reign supreme: from stunning traditional art, jaw-dropping digital art, fanart, sculptures, textile art—you name it, basically—this year’s list shows that Tumblr truly is the home for art and artists. Thank you, Artists on Tumblr, for enriching our dashboards day after day.
Rounding out the top three, we have two iconic shows: Good Omens is live-action, and The Owl House is animated, but both have a heck of a love story at their core. The second season of Good Omens blessed us with not one but two ineffably exquisite ships, while the final season of The Owl House broke and then healed fans’ hearts in equal measure. Thanks, @danaterrace! Actually, come to think of it, the Good Omens finale kinda did the same in reverse. Thanks to you, too, @neil-gaiman! We can’t wait for season 3.
Speaking of heartbreak and healing, Our Flag Means Death’s second season offered both in droves. The entire cast gave stellar performances, and fans couldn’t have been happier to see the kinds of representation the show displayed. Last year’s #1 topic, Stranger Things, may have dropped a bit, but trust us, you wouldn’t know it from the amount of meta, fanart, and fics in the tag. And did you hear about the live-action adaptations of both The Last of Us and One Piece? They were a preeeetty big deal this year, too. Check ‘em out if you haven’t yet (lol, of course you have). And we’d be remiss not to mention the hugely dedicated fans, fanartists, and fic writers devoting their time to all things Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Y’all deserve a little pizza, as a treat.
2023 was also a year for blockbuster movies, which of course hasn’t escaped anybody’s notice here on Tumblr. Barbie smashed box offices worldwide and left us reeling with every re-watch. How can one describe Greta Gerwig’s pink-filled opus? It certainly is one of the movies of all time. Meanwhile, with its incredible animation and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to a whole new multiverse of Spider-People, opening the portal to a veritable flood of incredible OCs. And then, of course, we got a fresh perspective on an old classic when cinephiles introduced Martin Scorscese’s cinematic masterpiece, Goncharov (1973), to a new generation of film aficionados who resoundingly agree that it is, in fact, the greatest mafia movie ever made. We’re so glad this underrated film finally got the acclaim it has long deserved.
In the realms of gaming and tech, the long-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has basically become everyone’s new favorite D&D/dating sim combination. Of course, the Pokémon franchise, games, shows, and Hatsune Miku collabs remain perennial favorites. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, sorry, we mean of course X, made waves across the internet. Similarly, the Reddit blackout drove Redditors to new venues, and Tumblr users welcomed the folks from r/196 with open arms—we’re huge fans of your memes, y’all, and you fit right in. Welcome, we’re glad you enjoy the chaos. Here’s a fun fact: if we included post metadata in Year in Review rankings, #polls, introduced in January of 2023, would have been the #5 topic on Tumblr this year. Phenomenal.
And, oh right. Taylor Swift had kind of a big year, what with the albums, the epic global tour, and the movie and stuff. Fantastic work, @taylorswift, the Swifties on Tumblr thank you for everything.
This is Tumblr’s Year in Review.

stood up || barcelona x teen!reader ||
Tumblr media
you get stood up on your first date, and alexia enlists some help to make you feel better.
there was something special in the air as you got ready for your date. you hadn't told anybody, but it was your very first date. between your teammates and your parents pushing you to focus on school or football, your chances for dating had been slim. at least they had been before you were asked out by the very cute captain of the basketball team, matthias.
matthias was everything that you had been told to look out for in a guy. not only did he look like the literal prince charming, but he was also very sweet. the two of you had run into each other at your school's gym a couple of times, and he had always held the door open for you and carried your bag to your car for you.
everything was going to be perfect tonight, and you just knew it. you were giddy as you rode your bike over to the restuarant. for a brief moment, you felt panic when you didn't see him before realizing that you were early.
it was hours later when you realized that matthias wasn't coming. you tried your hardest not to make a scene as you gathered your things and made your way out of the restaurant. you thought that you were home free whenever you heard a voice call out your name from across the parking lot.
"(y/n)!" alexia shouted. you slowly turned around to see her running towards you excitedly. it could have easily just been an accident running into her, but she was the one who you had texted the location of your date to. "oh, you look so pretty nena. how was your date?"
"i-it was good," you tried to lie. alexia's eyes narrowed for a moment, but she dropped it.
"where is the boy? um, matthew, was it? i would like to meet him," alexia said. that was it, your entire facade came crashing down as you erupted into a fit of tears. alexia held you tightly in her arms, catching just enough to know exactly what to do.
"shh, come on, you shouldn't let that stupid boy ruin your night. did you get anything to eat in there?" you shook your head. "well then, i'll have frido pick up some of that pizza that you like so much and we can have ourselves a slumber party. i know it's hard to believe, but mapi knows a thing or two about being stood up."
"i would have thought she did the standing up," you muttered as alexia led you towards her car.
"the party has arrived!" mapi and lucy shouted as they entered alexia's apartment. the woman had never been so fortunate to have a penthouse before befriending the two defenders. she didn't understand their constant need to be rambunctous. frido had arrived about 5 minutes earlier, and with some coaxing, managed to convince you to eat a bit.
"you are so lucky that i love you enough to let these idiots stay," alexia said as she nudged your side. you smiled and wrapped your arms around her in a tight hug. the moment was sweet, and broken up as soon as mapi jumped onto the couch with the two of you. "get off of me, you're too heavy!"
"must be all that muscle," mapi said as she flexed. alexia tried pushing mapi off of her lap, but the woman was a bit too quick. she scrambled fully into your lap and pressed a kiss to your forehead. "you look very beautiful. this boy, matthias, he is the stupidest one in all of spain, maybe even europe. i'd beat him up, but his kind of stupid might rub off."
"thank you for the offer mapi," you laughed. she clapped her hands and cheered as you smiled. it definitely still stung a bit, but you found it very difficult to be upset with your teammates surrounding you.
several more of your teammates flooded into alexia's apartment, filling up the living room completely. if it was any other night, you would have thought it was a party. in a way, it sort of was a party thrown just to cheer you up after your date had stood you up. a party that alexia "no parties during the season" putellas had thrown for you in the middle of the season.
"hey kid, how are you feeling?" alexia asked as things started to die down a bit more. most of the team was laying around anywhere that they could, a handful of the girls having already gone to alexia's guest rooms to sleep.
"better, a lot better. thank you for doing this," you told her. alexia smiled as she reached her hand up for you to take. you did so, knowing that if you didn't, you'd be sharing the couch with bruna, pina, and cata. it wouldn't have been too bad if you didn't already know that pina kicked in her sleep, bruna clung to the closest person she could find like a koala, and cata was horridly restless.
"i am sorry that you got stood up tonight," alexia said as she walked you towards her room. you had slept over before, but this was the first time that you didn't have to bribe alexia to let you watch a movie as you tried to fall asleep. you could hear the opening song of one of your favorite romantic comedies playing on the tv as you entered the room.
"come on." frido patted the spot in the middle of the bed for you to lay down. you excitedly ran over and got comfortable in the spot offered to you. alexia moved a bit slower, but once she was close enough, offered her hand for you to hold as you curled up beside frido. you barely made it 10 minutes into the movie before you were practically dead to the world.
"it's easy to forget how little she is sometimes," alexia said quietly as she glanced down at you. "she looked so hurt earlier, i didn't know what to do."
"you did the right thing, ale. look at her, she had a great night all things considered. this could happen again, and if it does, she'll know to lean on us for support. she wants to be so much like you that it hurts her," frido said. alexia knew that the swedish woman had a point. everybody could see the little things that you tried picking up from alexia since you had joined barcelona. it was flattering, but alexia thought that you'd be better off if you were just yourself in the long run.

Helloooo♥️
Back in my lovely leopard shorts. Yesterday my bf came back home after being away for work for a week. He commented on my bod and said I lost weight since he was home last, which was cool ig. We hung out with my roommates and ordered Pizza Hut!😋 Yeah, I got chicken fingers, and my roommate and I made homemade fries. My only regret? not ordering the cookie pizza thing. it looked BOMB.
Am I going to do some sort of crazy fast? No. You can eat all the foods you enjoy and not have to “make up for it.” I’ll probably just up my protein intake today. I try to live sustainably.
Thank you everyone for the overwhelming amount of love I’ve gotten recently. On my posts and in my messages. Some of you are the sweetest beans ever.

I realised I hadn't posted a greenhouse report since spring, and today seemed like a good day for a 2023 home-grown food review!
2023 was a great year for fruit; my apple & plum trees were so generous! In the greenhouse my most successful crops were tomatoes, red chilli peppers, beans, and pickles. I was able to make spicy plum chutney using my own plums, onions and peppers:
Tumblr media
On the other hand I was unlucky with my non-greenhouse vegetables, there were so many insects this year and my courgettes got absolutely decimated. But then I complained about my bad courgette luck to some neighbours and was gifted 9 courgettes and 3 pumpkins. I spent the first half of my autumn cooking and freezing and pickling and preserving to try not to let anything go to waste; I made:
7 jars of pesto (with greenhouse basil); 8 jars of pasta sauce (with courgette-pumpkin-tomato-red peppers-onions-basil, + parmesan); an unknown but large amount of pumpkin-tomato soup (I put them in empty glass bottles and freeze them); 7 jars of spicy plum chutney; 2 small bottles of spicy oil for my pizzas (with some of my chilli peppers; the rest are still drying by the stove to become chilli powder); 5 jars of plum jam and 3 of blackberry jam (I also froze several kg of whole blackberries for winter desserts); 6 jars of pickles (they are delicious!! I'd never pickled pickles before this year, I'm really happy with the result); 12 small bottles of elderberry syrup; 4 large bottles of elderflower syrup; hundreds of little apple sweets; several bottles of apple juice; an absolutely dizzying amount of apple puree / compote / jelly, because I refused to leave any leftover apples for the dormouse population. They are not my friends.
(If you think I'm being too mean to the dormice, please know that a) they are unrepentant thieves; b) I became so competent at hiding my apples that a dormouse ended up sneaking into the shower at night to eat my soap. My bar of homemade (not by me) goat milk soap. It's hazelnut scented so I guess if you're a rodent it just smells like lunch.)
I took some stuff out of the freezer just long enough to take this family picture; though I already gave away a lot of things to guests and neighbours, so it's just what's left! (I also froze enough chopped onions to last until summer I think)
Tumblr media
I am terrible at labelling my jars; in my hubris I always assume I'll just remember where I put which kind of sauce or flavour of compote. I never remember. I end up having to give my guests mystery jars, like "this is fruit jelly! Made with... fruits"
So it wouldn't get too monotonous I added various fruits to my apple purees: apple-raspberry, apple-blueberry, -plum, -blackberry... I also made a few jars of apple-pineapple-pumpkin compote because I had too much pumpkin and I regret not focusing on that from the start, this combo tasted so good and was the most cheerful yellow colour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I finally used my last apples last week, making apple-quince paste which is currently drying in order to become sweets. I bought some pretty & thick paper to origami a few boxes to put them in, so I'll have New Year presents for my courgette-providing neighbours. <3
Tumblr media
(My cats are currently banned from this room so they won't try to lick the fruit paste) (they don't even like it, they're just cats)

I triple dog dare you to write Josh futterman getting caught jerking off to a pic of y/n!!!!
Tumblr media
Heyyy bbg I am SOOOO sorry this took me so long to get to this request, I have been dealing with final exams and tbh mental health? Down the drain lmao. I do have a fic similar to this, so if you want to read that one it is linked HERE!! I am still going to write a similar concept, however, I will change it up a little bit! I hope that you still enjoy it!
cw: smut, male masturbation, female masturbation, fluff

Being around Josh Futturman is this strange mix of contradictions that you can't quite wrap your head around. On one hand, he's this total loser, but you can't help but be infatuated with him. It's like he's the king of awkward, yet there's this undeniable charisma that draws you in. And then there's the whole "Biotic Wars" thing – he's legit addicted to that game. You can't help but roll your eyes when he starts rambling about how close he was to beating the game, but there's something oddly cute about his enthusiasm. Lately, though, there's this other layer to your friendship that you can't shake off – a subtle flutter in your chest when he laughs or those lingering looks that neither of you acknowledges. You knew you were far gone when it came to Josh, but you also knew you refused to risk your friendship with him, so you kept silent.
-------------------
Your shift came to a close and you started gathering your things when the buzzing of your phone made you jump. You looked down, seeing Josh’s name on the screen, making you smile. You pick up, greeted by the distant sounds of explosions ad gunfire – the unmistakable sounds of “Biotic Wars.” You rolled your eyes.
“Hey, y/n, what are you doing?” There was a tiredness in his voice.
“I just got off of work, I’m about to head home. What’s up with you?” You responded, realizing that it was kind of a stupid question.
“Ah, you know, same old. Just killing these biotics left and right. You should join me sometime.” You couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Maybe someday, but probably not,” he groans in a mocking way. “You wanna hang out today? Feels like I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“Yeah, absolutely,” he says, clearly distracted. “You can um – ah fuck you! Sorry, not you, I just died.” He laughed. “You can come to my place, that sound alright?” The frantic clicking of buttons started up in the background, accompanied by gunshots and occasional explosions.
“Yeah your place works,” you remark. “What time?” There was a silence from Josh, leaving the sounds of the game in the background. “Josh?”
“Sorry, sorry,” he mumbled. “How does 6 sound? It gives you a chance to get out of your work clothes and me a chance to go through a few more levels.” Clearly, he was more focused on the game.
“That works, I’ll grab pizza for us. Usual?” He ‘mhmm’s’ in response your question. “Cool, I’ll see you then.” He says a quick goodbye, hanging up quickly after. You sigh, grabbing your bag and keys, making your way to your car to head home.
---------
You looked at your watch, the time reading 5:42. You were typically early. Josh always left his door unlocked whenever he knew you were coming over, so you were able to walk right in. You set your bag and the pizza box on the dining table, looking up the stairs. You couldn’t hear his game playing, however you did hear noises from up the stairs. You walk up the stairs quietly, wanting to sneak up on him. Noticing his door was cracked, you took a peak in. Your breath caught in your through, letting out a soft gasp at what you were greeted with. On his computer monitor, your Instagram was pulled up, a photo of you at the beach on the screen. A heat started pooling in your core with the sight in front of you: Josh was in his gaming chair, jeans around his ankles, quickly stroking his dick. His head was lulled back, eyes half closed and tongue poking out of his mouth slightly. You stayed silent, watching his hand moved up in down in a needy pace, whimpers escaping his throat as he continued. He switched hands, shaking the one he was previously using, making you think he had been at this for a while. You bit your lower lip, your arousal becoming overwhelming. You start to think, there's no harm in touching myself too, right? With that, you quietly sit down on the floor, leaning against his doorframe. You took a look over your shoulder, making sure you did not alert Josh that you were there. You were in the clear. You let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding. Carefully, you dip your hand down into your sweatpants, past your underwear and down to your heat. You leaned your head back against the door frame as you grazed your clit, biting on your lip to stifle any noise threatening your lips. Your eyes closed, taking in the whimpers and words coming from Josh as he continued stroking his cock. Your fingers dipped down into your heat, making you sigh. Your mind was completely clouded with the thought of your fingers being replaced by Josh’s, making a heat pool in your lower belly.
“F-fuck, y/n,” you heard Josh whimper out, making you that much closer to your own release. You circled your clit, letting out your own soft moans at this point, unable to contain them with the pleasure you were feeling. You heard Josh’s moans get more erratic as kept going, insinuating that he was close. You sped up your movements, rubbing and fingering your wet heat, finally bringing yourself to your release. You cover your mouth with your free hand, doing your best to stifle your moans, leaning your head back against the door frame and screwing your eyes shut. You sit there for a moment, catching your breath before glancing inside Josh’s room, not seeing him on his gaming chair anymore. You stand up on wobbly legs, composing yourself. You knock on his door, pushing it open.
“Hey Josh, I’m here,” you call out with a shaky voice. You hoped he wouldn’t notice. You looked at his computer, your picture no longer up. Josh was standing at his shelf, now wearing sweatpants. He turned to look at you, a smile making its way onto his face. His cheeks were a light flush of red.
“Hey!” His voice was cheerful as he made his way over to his bed. You go in, sitting next to you. He leaned in to hug you, you immediately hugging back. He moved his head to where his lips were next to your ear. “Did you like what you saw?” His voice was low and gravely. Your eyes widened, quickly pulling away from the hug to look at him. He looked nervous, his face a darker red than before. This honestly probably took a lot of confidence to say, especially for him.
“W-what?” You stutter out.
“You heard me,” he grinned.
“I um, you saw?” He just nodded. “How much?”
“Most of it, watching you is what actually made me,” he paused. “You know,” he looked away, clearly nervous now. You guess his confidence wore off.
“I-I’m sorry if I made things weird I just-” he cut you off, connecting his lips to yours gently. Your arms instinctively wrap around his neck, pulling him more into the kiss. You pull away, looking into his eyes.
“Y/n, I’ve been into you for years. You just never showed me any signs of anything, so I stayed quiet about it.” You smiled.
“honestly, josh? I have too. I was just scared.”
“You sure didn’t seem scared five minutes ago,” he smirked. You grumbled, flicking the back of his head. “You were also early, you were never supposed to see or know anything.” You shrugged.
“Well, I do now.” He looked down.
“So what now?” He said, joy and curiosity in his voice. You thought for a moment.
“well, theres pizza downstairs-“
“no, not right now, dumbass. In general. Us. What now.”
“oh,” you blushed. “You could be a gentleman and ask me on a real date, you know.” You teased him. He rolled his eyes, hiding the smile that crept onto his face.
“Sorry, sorry. Y/n, would you like to go on a date with me?” A smile lingered on his lips. You pretend to think for a moment.
“I guess, but lets just eat pizza and watch a movie tonight, how does that sound?” He nodded.
“I’ll go get the pizza,” he planted a kiss on your cheek before he left the room. You laid back on his bed, staring at the ceiling. You couldn’t believe what just happened, and frankly you were embarrassed. But you’re secrets out now and it feels good, especially knowing that he had feelings for you too. You let your eyes flutter shut, taking a deep breath, anticipating what may come within this newfound relationship that may be forming.
Tumblr media
OMG thank you for being patient with me. I hope this is good, I honestly struggled with this one a lot for some reason, but if you enjoyed it, im glad. Have a beautiful day everyone :)

This isn't Your Fault (Introductions)

You made your way through the streets of New York, your earbuds in as you weaved in and out of the crowds. You had just gotten off the subway and were now walking to Tara’s apartment. It had been a few weeks since the Ghostface attack and you were healed up enough to be ready to officially meet Sam and the others. You had gotten your cast off a few days ago and were now set to wear a brace for a few more weeks.
Tara had barely left your side once you got discharged from the hospital. She went home with you and practically moved in for the last few weeks. The only time she wasn’t with you was when she had class and she had actually gotten out of going to class the first week but then no one would accept her excuses anymore. You hadn’t returned to class yet, you were set to return soon though but until then your professors had been understanding and since most of your assignments were online you were still able to do them and most of your classes had a friend in them who just took notes for you and the ones that didn’t have friends, your professors were kind enough to email you the important information.
Besides going back to the hospital for a checkup on your injuries, this was the first time you had been out of your house, not that you were complaining. You were enjoying the free time, even though you still couldn’t do big movements without being in pain, and you had to sleep sitting up slightly because of your ribs.
Tara had been reluctant to leave your side again today, but it seemed she was more nervous about you coming over, so she left you in the morning to go home and make sure everything went smoothly. You weren’t sure what needed to be prepared, you were just going over for dinner and as far as you knew they were just ordering pizza. Based on hundreds of texts you had been getting though it was clear Tara was panicking over you officially meeting Sam, with some panicking over your wellbeing sprinkled in. She’d send a text assuring you Sam wouldn’t be mean and then another asking to make sure you took your pain meds.
The podcast you were listening to was just finishing up as you made it to the front of the apartment. You stared up at the tall building, you began bouncing your leg, realizing you were about to officially meet Sam. You had been comforting Tara and telling her not to be nervous and now here you were, shaky legs and sweaty hands at the idea of walking up the few steps and opening the door to officially step inside the apartment building. You gave your shoulders a good shake before quickly running up the steps and flinging the door open. You had nothing to be afraid of, you knew that Tara was going to be there and most likely holding your hand the entire time and Anika was also going to be there.
You made your way up all the stairs. You totally understood why Sam wanted an apartment on the top floor, but you were not a fan of stairs. When you finally reached the top floor, you slipped out your earbuds and put them in your pocket. You took a deep breath before raising your hand and giving the door three soft knocks. A few seconds later there was the sound of a scuffle on the other side of the door and what sounded like someone lightly running into the door.
“Behave!” Tara whisper shouted. You couldn’t help but silently chuckle. “No, Mindy!” came again. “Sit!” you continued to laugh as you pulled out your phone, shooting Tara a text saying you could hear everything. “Shit,” came a quiet whisper that told you Tara was the one standing right on the other side of the door.
The door was quickly ripped open and standing before you was Tara, smiling brightly. “Hi!” she said a little to cheerfully.
“Hey,” you said, staring at her as you tried to contain your laughter.
You stood there staring at her as she used her body to block the inside of the apartment. You raised your eyebrows, but she didn’t seem to take the hint that she needed to move for you to enter. “Yo, you gonna let her in or what?” came Chads voice.
“Shut up!” Tara snapped, turning around to glare at Chad. When she turned back to you, she quietly stepped aside, trying to hide her blush.
You quietly giggled as you stepped into the apartment. Before you could take in the entirety of the apartment and even before Tara could close the door you were hit with an abrupt force causing you to stumble back. You let out a groan of pain as you felt arms wrap around your neck.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Anika mumbled into your shoulder.
“Gentle, gentle,” you said, moving your body back slightly.
“Oh my god!” Anika cried, quickly letting go of you. “Did I hurt you? I thought you were healed. Did I hurt you? I’m sorry. Did I hurt you?”
“I’m good,” you assured her. “It just takes a while for ribs to heal, they’re still a bit sensitive.”
“I’m so sorry! Let me make it up to you,” her eyes darted around the room as if she was looking for something to give you. “Oh! I can do our final audio project!”
“No!” you quickly shouted, holding up your hands. “Please, anything but that.” You looked at her with wide eyes. “I have a hundred in that class and would like to keep it. You can put your name on the project and present though.”
Anika’s arms fell as she began to pout. “Fine,” she crossed her arms over her chest. “I still want to make it up to you. Let me buy you a soundtrack!”
You rolled your eyes, letting you a soft sigh. “Fine, we can go to the record store tomorrow.”
“I thought we were hanging out tomorrow,” Tara pouted.
“I figured you were coming with,” you said, turning towards your girlfriend.
“Good,” she smiled and then quickly intertwined her hand with yours.
“You have a record player?” Mindy asked. She was standing across the room with her arms crossed but she seemed genuinely surprised, and her eyes were wide with curiosity.
“Yeah,” you said shyly. “You just get a better sound.”
“That’s cool,” Mindy nodded, uncrossing her arms. “Mind if I tag along?”
“Sure.”
“Yay!” Anika said, clapping her hands. “It can be like a double date!”
Chad gasped in offense, raising his arms as everyone turned to look at him. “You can come too,” Anika said.
“Yeah, be the fifth wheel,” Mindy said. “Might as well get used to it.”
Chad crossed his arms, clenching his jaw as he glared at his sister.
“Oh, Sam!” Anika said, spinning around to face the only person who had yet to speak. “Why don’t you come to? We can make it a bonding experience!”
Sam looked at Anika with a blank face. You were still waking up when Sam had been at the hospital and you had only seen her from a distance so you weren’t sure what her reaction would be, you couldn’t tell if this was her happy face, her angry face, or just her face.
“How about we see how dinner goes first,” Sam said, smiling at Anika before turning back to you and Tara with narrowed eyes.
“Sam,” Tara warned, gripping your hand just a bit tighter.
She slowly walked up to the two of you, the others subtly clearing a path. She stopped in front of you, arms crossed, and eyes narrowed. You couldn’t help but gulp, you stared straight back into Sam’s eyes. You were trying to portray strength and confidence, even though you were sure that was most definitely not what was coming across to Sam.
“Mindy,” Sam said calmly. “Hand me the taser on the counter.”
Your eyes widened but you didn’t break your stare from Sam’s, not because you were confident, no, now you were afraid to look away. You would have backed away but there wasn’t anywhere to go with Tara gripping your hand and the wall right behind you.
“Mindy!” Tara screeched when the other girl ran off to grab the taser. When she came back, she at least looked apologetic as she handed Sam the taser. “Sam,” Tara said again.
Sam played with the small taser in her hands. She held the taser in front of your face as she clicked the button, making the apartment fill with the loud crackling sound. You couldn’t help but flinch, squeezing Tara’s hand in the process.
“Here you go,” Sam said, holding out the taser to you with a soft smile.
Everyone in the apartment remained frozen. You slowly let go of Tara’s hand to grab the taser. “Thanks,” you said hesitantly as you looked down at the taser before slipping it into your pocket.
“I assume you know how to use it considering you put up a decent fight against Ghostface,” Sam explained, scratching the back of her neck. “This is just an extra form of protection. It’s also a thank you for protecting my sister.”
“My pleasure,” you said softly, your body instantly relaxing. “Thank you.”
“I’m Sam, Tara’s older sister,” Sam introduced herself, holding out her hand.
“Y/N,” you took Sam’s hand, giving it a good shake. “Tara’s secret girlfriend.” At that everyone let out the breath they had been holding in and lightly chuckled.
“Oh, I expect to hear all about that.” Sam flicked a glare towards her sister “Over pizza, come on.” She nodded and made her way back into the dining room.
As everyone turned to follow her, you let out a relieved breath before looking at Tara. Tara was still staring forward at the now empty space; you gave her hand a light squeeze. Tara looked back at you with a small smile. She returned your hand squeeze before leading you into the dining room. You saw the gang left two chairs next to each other empty for you and Tara. When the two of you took your seats, Tara scooched her chair just a bit closer so even though she couldn’t hold your hand your knees were touching.
“So, I have to ask,” Chad said after a few minutes, a mouth full of pizza. “Where did you learn to fight?”
You chuckled. “I wouldn’t call what I did fighting,” you answered, making sure to swallow your food first.
“Come on!” he threw his head back. “You were on the phone with,” he gestured towards Tara. “And you still managed to hear Ghostface and fight him off for as long as you did.”
You shrugged. “I don’t know, I watch a lot of Criminal Minds?” you played with the crust of your pizza. “And true crime. I guess I just always wonder how those people don’t see someone standing right there behind them or right outside their window and it made me more aware of my surroundings.”
Chad nodded along, taking in everything you were saying as he shoved more pizza into his mouth. “And I’ve seen Tangled,” you added. “I know exactly how good of a weapon a frying pan can be.”
“Do you play baseball?” Mindy asked.
“No,” you said, wrinkling your nose in disgust at the idea of playing sports.
“Why’d you have a bat?”
“In case someone ever broke in,” you said as if it was obvious.
Everyone continued to chat and finish off the pizza. You weren’t sure how many pieces Chad downed; you wouldn’t be surprised if he ate one pizza all by himself. You were no longer questioning why Sam bought two large pizzas, bread sticks, and cheesy bread.
You tapped your phone, looking at the time, you let out a sigh seeing how late it was. “I should head out,” you said. Tara turned to you pouting. “I’d rather not walk home alone to late.” Tara continued to pout. “Weren’t you the one complaining earlier when I said I was taking the subway even though it was daylight?” Tara grumbled something incoherent before crossing her arms.
“You can stay here,” Sam said, making everyone snap their heads in her direction.
“Really?” you asked. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah, I don’t want you having to walk home alone when it’s this late.”
“Okay, thank you.”
“As long as it’s okay with your parents at least,” Sam added. “I’m surprised your mom let you leave the house alone after what happened.”
“That’s because they’re still out of town,” Tara said.
“Really?” Mindy asked. “They didn’t fly home the second they heard their daughter was attacked?” you could hear the bit of curiosity in her voice but mostly judgement.
Anika was distracted playing with her phone, not even looking up as she said, “That’s because they don’t know.” She let out a small laugh until she realized what she said. She slowly put down her phone and looked at you to see you already glaring at her. You reached over whacking her on the arm.
“They don’t know?” Tara whipped her head towards you with an accusatory glare.
You cleared your throat, opening and closing your mouth a few times as you tried to come up with an excuse. “I didn’t want her to worry,” you finally said.
“How did you keep this from your mom? Why did she think the security alarm was triggered so late?” Tara was gesturing wildly, shaking the table with each movement.
“I told her you fell out of the tree,” you said quietly, refusing to meet Tara’s gaze. “Again.”
Tara gasped. “And she believed you?” you glanced at her, seeing her hold a hand to her heart.
“I mean…” you shrugged. “Can you blame her?”
“It happened once!”
“Twice!”
“That’s not the point!”
“Wait, wait, wait,” Chad said, waving his arms. “You fell out of a tree?” he asked Tara, trying to contain his laughter.
“I miss judged the distance from the branch to her window,” is all Tara said.
“And that’s how she met my mom,” you added.
Everyone broke out into a laugh after that. “Whatever,” Tara grumbled. “She loves me now.”
You shook your head laughing at her. You reached down, grabbing her hand and bringing it towards your mouth to give her fingers a quick kiss. The gesture made Tara’s cheeks turn red and though she tried to duck her head out of sight from everyone you could see the small smile on her face.
Everyone talked for a bit longer, getting to know each other a bit more. You heard stories about Tara growing up in Woodsboro and what she was like. You heard all about Chad’s football career and how he got the scholarship he did. Sam didn’t say much, she added small bits here and there when the topic had to do with Tara’s childhood but otherwise sat there silently, smiling, and laughing along with everyone else. Eventually it got late though, and the twins and Anika made their way home, denying Sam’s offer to spend the night as well.
“We’ll see you tomorrow for the record store,” Anika said, pulling you into a much more gentle hug than the one she had greeted you with.
“And we we’ll be by for breakfast before,” Chad added, looking at Sam with puppy dog eyes.
Sam rolled her eyes. “Whatever,” she said but nodded.
After the others left Tara led you to her room and began getting ready for bed. She was already under the covers as you slipped in right beside her. Tara took the extra pillows on her bed and helped place them so you could lay partially sitting up. Tara had an arm draped around your waist, snuggling as close to you as she could get, she was about to close her eyes when the door to her room creaked open. Tara propped herself up and you turned to see Sam standing in the doorway.
“Keep the door open,” Sam said. She narrowed her eyes, giving Tara a knowing look before walking off towards her room.
“She’s still injured Sam!” Tara said before dropping her head back down onto the mattress, grumbling about how Sam never lets her get away with anything as she snuggled back into your side.
You just smiled, shaking your head at seeing the sisters interact in person. You shifted, wiggling your body down until you were laying as much as you could without causing your ribs to much pain. The bruising was mostly gone but it still hurt to lay on your stomach or either side.
It felt like you had just closed your eyes before they snapped wide open. Your breathing heavy, you could feel your heart racing as you looked around the unfamiliar room until you felt something graze against your leg. You looked down, instantly relaxing at seeing Tara still sound asleep at your side. You closed your eyes, taking a few deep breaths, you were at Tara’s apartment, you had spent the night, you were safe.
You rubbed your eyes realizing you couldn’t just go back to sleep. You quietly slipped out of the bed, gently lifting Tara’s arm off of you. You waited a second, watching to make sure Tara didn’t wake up before tiptoeing out of her room and making your way into the family room. You glanced around at the dark apartment, catching sight of a clock, it was three in the morning. You sighed before easing yourself down on the couch.
You were sitting there quietly in the dark staring at the empty wall before you when there was a small click and a light flicked on. You flinched, nearly jumping to your feet as you turned your whole body towards the sound.
“Sorry,” Sam whispered, stepping further into the family room.
“Sorry,” you croaked out, starting to stand up. “I didn’t mean to-”
“You’re fine,” Sam said softly, raising her hand for you to sit back down. You slowly lowered yourself back down as Sam made her way over, sitting in the chair across from the couch. “Are you okay?”
You nodded. “It’s just hard to get comfortable sometimes. Though the pain is mostly gone it’s still there a bit,” you said when you had calmed down enough. “The pain meds they gave me are meant to help me sleep but they kind of do the opposite,” you chuckled but it quickly fell flat.
The two of you sat there in silence for a moment. You stared down at your feet while Sam kept her eyes on you. The only light illuminating the room was the small one Sam flicked on when she entered.
“Nightmares?” Sam asked softly.
You nodded, refusing to lift your head and look at her. “I can usually sleep through the night when Tara’s there,” you whispered. “Most of the time at least.”
“Hey,” Sam said softly, making you finally look up at her, seeing her eyes held the same softness. “You have nothing to be ashamed of. You went through something terrible. We’ve all been through it. We definitely get it.” You nodded. “Have you talked to Tara about this at all?”
You shook your head. “I don’t want to burden her; she’s got enough to worry about.”
“She loves you. It wouldn’t be a burden to her.”
“Yeah, but-”
“Is it a burden to you when she talks about her problems? Or when she wakes up from a nightmare?”
“Of course not.” Sam raised her eyebrows but didn’t lose her softness. You let out a defeated sigh. “Yeah okay.”
“Talk to her,” she said before standing up. “When you’re ready to of course. You should also call your mom.”
You let out a small chuckle, rolling your eyes but nodded none the less.
“And…” she glanced around the room like she wasn’t used to this type of conversation. “I’m here to if you want to talk. If you’re comfortable of course.”
“Thank you,” you whispered. “You’re a great sister, Tara’s lucky to have you.”
Sam cleared her throat, trying to hide her blush, she was just like Tara in that way. “You should try and get some sleep, who knows where Anika will try and drag us after the record store.”
You nodded, pushing yourself back to your feet. You definitely knew how Anika got when she was out shopping and with everyone going you had no idea how long the trip to the record store would actually be. There were times you went out with Anika with the intent to go to one store and you ended up on the other side of the city hours later.
Sam flicked off the light and the two of you made your way back to bed. Sam gave you a small nod before she entered her room, gently closing the door behind her. You pushed Tara’s door open, still seeing her sound asleep. You pushed the door closed, leaving it a few inches open like Sam had requested before quietly slipping back under the covers.
You tried to be as subtle as possible to not disturb Tara. As soon as you were situated again, Tara curled into your side, wrapping her arm around your waist. You wrapped your arm around her as best as you could, pulling her closer into your side before closing your eyes and quickly drifting back off to sleep.

You've known Lena for what seemed like forever. From the moment the two of you met you couldn't be kept away from each other. Now three years on, the two of you were as thick as thieves.
Only up until recently, you had been thinking of Lena in a different way. Going from longing gazes to discrete touches. You knew you were falling for the girl but you just couldn't stop yourself.
You knew you couldn't do anything with these feelings so you kept them buried deep down. Not telling anyone. Not a single soul.
Due to hiding your feelings you had been different around Lena, and you were sure she could sense it. As much as it pained you, you tried to put a little distance between you both but you were just not able to keep her from running around in your mind.
You were currently sitting on your sofa at home, scrolling through instagram when you noticed that Lena had posted. Clicking on her account you could’ve sworn you had heart palpitations.
Immediately liking her new photo, your heart nearly jumped out of your chest once you saw a message pop up at the top of your screen.
[ lena: 6:56pm ] eager much?
[ you: 6:56pm ] i’m sorry?
[ lena: 6:56pm ] check when i posted
Opening instagram back up, you saw how long ago she posted. And it wasn't long at all. 1 minute ago. Shit.
[ you: 6:57pm ] what? I can’t like a photo of my best friend?
Playing it cool and definitely not acknowledging the way your chest pained after typing the reply.
[ lena: 6:57pm ] oh no, you can. just seemed a bit quick, no?
[ you: 6:57pm ] i refreshed the app and you popped up
[ lena: 6:57pm ] mhm sureeeee
[ you: 6:58pm ] i hate you
[ lena: 5:58pm ] no you don’t
[ you: 5:58pm ] i’m pretty sure i do
[ lena: 5:58pm ] so if i invited you over for pizza and a movie you wouldn't come?
[ you: 5:59pm ] i hate you
[ lena: 5:59pm ] i’ll see you in a bit
You huffed out a laugh, getting up from the sofa with a sinking feeling in your stomach. You couldn't help but wonder what it’d be like if you actually told her how you felt. Shaking your head, you got rid of that idea.
Grabbing your keys from your kitchen counter, you put your shoes on and made your way over to Lena’s. It wasn’t a long drive and before you knew it you were standing outside her front door, waiting for her to let you in.
“The stalker’s here.” Lena grinned as she opened the door.
“Ha ha, very funny.” You deadpanned, walking past her and into the living room where there was pizza laid out on the coffee table.
“Wow, I don't even get a ‘hi’ and you’re already digging into the pizza.” Lena scoffed, sitting beside you on the sofa.
“I only came for free food and a movie.” You said with a grin, discreetly trying to put space between the two of you.
“Whatever.” Lena said, rolling her eyes as she tried to fight off a smile that made its way onto her face.
“What movie are we watching?” You asked, taking another slice of pizza.
“Ten things I hate about you.”
“Really?”
“What? I like a good romcom.” Lena shrugged, taking a slice of her own and pressing play on the movie.
As the movie went on, your concentration became less and less. Your brain solely focused on the person beside you. No matter how much space you put between her, you still felt yourself being drawn back to her. Like an unexplainable force pushing you together.
Shifting in your spot, you tried to get comfortable but it was no use. Every position seemed to be more uncomfortable than the last and unbeknownst to you, Lena seemed to be having the same problem.
From all your shifting around, the two of you were now sitting next to each other. Shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh. Lena rested her head on your shoulder, still trying to find a comfortable position.
Accidentally, Lena let out a small grumble, becoming fed up with being uncomfortable.
“You okay?” You chuckle, looking down at Lena.
“No.” She huffed, moving off your shoulder.
“What’s up?”
“I can’t get comfy.”
“Neither.” You agreed, a small tight-lipped smile making its way onto your face.
“Lay back.” Lena said, placing her hands on your waist, pushing you to lay on your back.
“Wha- um, okay.” You said, heart pounding as you let Lena guide you back.
You got yourself in a position so your head was rested on a pillow, being slightly propped up by the arm of the sofa so you could fully lay down.
Once you had stopped moving, Lena crawled on top of you, laying her body across yours.
“Is this okay?” Lena questioned as she let out a content sigh against your neck, her breath sending goosebumps to spread like a wildfire over your skin.
“Huh- I- what?” You blushed, eyes wide as you scolded yourself for not being able to form a complete sentence.
“Do you want me to get off?” Lena asked, placing her hands on the arm of the sofa, either side of your head, so she could look at your face properly.
“No! I uh-” You coughed and let out a nervous laugh. “I don’t think so?”
“You don’t think so?” Lena repeated with a teasing tone.
“I don’t want you to get off.”
“Okay.” Lena smiled and moved back to the position she was in originally.
By now the movie was long forgotten and you couldn't help the way your heart sped up at how Lena was on top of you.
Not knowing what to do without malfunctioning, you kept your arms up in the air, deciding that was the better option.
“You can touch me, y’know. I’m not fragile.” Lena said softly, reaching her arm out to grab yours, placing it around her waist.
“Mhm, yeah. I know that.” You said, placing your other arm on her back, slowly drawing intricate patterns.
The two of you didn't say anything for the rest of the movie, the both of you enjoying the tranquillity of the moment. As the credits played, you had failed to notice that Lena had drifted off to sleep.
You had tried to slide out from underneath her but it was no use. Shifting in her sleep, Lena mumbled a few incoherent words and you knew that you had fallen so hard, you don’t think anyone would be able to save you.
Letting yourself drift off into a deep sleep, the only thing grounding you was the person on top of you.
Many hours passed and it was now the early hours of the morning, the sun peaking through the blinds caused Lena to wake up from her sleep.
Some time during the night, the two of you had shifted so she was trapped between you and the cushions of the sofa.
Lena froze, noticing the position she was currently in and letting a blush take over her features. Her leg was draped over yours, tangled together and her hand had made its way up your top, resting on your stomach.
Snapping herself out of her thoughts, Lena quickly removed her hand from under your top, suddenly feeling her fingertips grow cold.
Shifting in your sleep, you wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her just a tad closer and resting your head in her neck.
“You’re staring.” You mumbled, eyes still closed as you let a small smile take over your face.
“I’m not.” Lena protested, weakly trying to get out of your hold.
“You’re lucky I like you.” You smiled, moving your head back to the pillow and tightening your grip on her.
Lena laid quietly for a while, assuming you had drifted back off to sleep before she spoke up again.
“I like you too.” She whispered, brushing a strand of hair that fell over your face.
“I knew it.” You smirked, pulling her closer into you. “Now go back to sleep.”
Lena let out a small chuckle, pressing her lips to your cheek before cuddling herself into you and drifting back off into sleep.

Beach date
Rafe Cameron x Reader
She/her
one shot / fluff
summary: “VICTOR, YOU ACTUALLY DID THIS!?” Type fic.
Obx masterlist
┗ •◦இ•◦ ┛
I was sitting on my bed scrolling through TikTok when Rafe texted me.
“Be ready I’m picking you up at 6.”
“And for what can I ask?” I responded
“It’s a surprise peach”
Rafe came up with that nickname when I was over one day and I accidentally drank the rest of his peach juice.
“Okay okay see you then :)”
With the time being 5:38, I get up and put on denim skirt and white halter top with little blue flowers on it. I grab my Uggs cause they’re cute and comfy and I put my vanilla perfume. I get my purse and make sure my lip gloss is in it and soon I get the text that my bae has arrived. I love calling Rafe bae cause he hates it.
“Mom I’ll be back, I’m going out with rafe!” I call out from the stairs.
“Okay honey, be home before 10 please!” She calls out from her office.
She absolutely loves Rafe and luckily she trust me and him enough to let me out without asking anything. And with her having my location on 24/7
I shut the door behind me and I walk to the black truck in my driveway. I see Rafe standing right by the passenger door with his dopey smile plastered across his face.
“Hey dream boat” I say walking up to him placing a small kiss on his lips.
“Hey hey? That wasn’t a kiss come one give daddy a real one.” Rafe said earning a laugh from me before pulling me in by the waist completely smashing his lips on mine.
“That was sweet but you’re eating me Rafe.” I joke with him.
“Oh so with that hurtful joke, I don’t think you deserve these.” He said grabbing a bouquet from inside the car.
“Rafe, you didn’t oh my god they’re beautiful!” I saw grabbing them from him and smelling them.
It was a mix of blue hydrangeas with lilies and mums with the perfect amount of greenery . They smelt amazing, like peace which I loved about flowers.
“Blue like my eyes so you think about me every time you look at them.” He somewhat joked.
“I always do Rafe.” I say before planting a small cute long kiss on him.
“Now come on, I’m dying to know what you’ve planned.” I say adjusting the collar of his white dress shirt.
“Okay peach get in.” he said opening the door and letting me in.
After a 15 minutes drive with a quick pit stop for a pizza at dominos, we finally made it. We stopped by the beach putting the car in park and once again opening the door for me.
“What are we doing at the beach? I didn’t bring a suit.” I say while he grabs my hand leading up to the sand.
“We’re not gonna for a swim.” he said.
“You should’ve mentioned the beach, I wouldn’t have picked these Uggs Rafe.” I tell him.
“You know Uggs were actually meant for the beach? They were for surfers” he explains.
“Do I look like a surfer?” I complain.
“Hey I got you to stand in the board once!” He nudged me
After a short walk we are greeted with a blanket that had a basket with lemonade and other goodies. There was 2 easels and some paint supplies along with more flowers.
“Happy date night!” Rafe said as let put down the pizza.
“Rafe this is so cute!” I say as I sit down in the blanket and look at everything he got.
“I did this all myself, thought we deserved a nice cute date to end off the summer.” Rafe said sitting next to me.
“Rafe this is perfect. Thank you.” I said hugging him.
“I got us some paints so we can do a little couples art maybe and some extra canvas for fun but mainly cause I know I’ll mess up.” He joked bringing out all the colors.
“You’re actually the best boyfriend ever Rafe.”
“I know I know. You can pay he back later.” he said with a wink as you nudge him.
“Okay give me a plate I want pizza.”
After your small dinner and some laughs shared with Rafe you finally get to the painting.
“Okay so we can do thumb prints, handprints, kisses, little things that represent us,” Rafe listed ideas as he scroll through Pinterest.
“Let’s do a handprints, something easy and then maybe we can cover it in sand to reminds of us this little beach date.” You offered
“Yeah I like that” he kissed your nose.
“Alright so many kisses today I think you just did this to get some.”
“No no I actually did this for us, but that’s just a perk” Rafe gave another kiss but on your neck and started going down.
“Okay okay! Let’s get to painting!” You giggled due to the friction of his warm lips on your skin.
As you guys finally decided on a paint color which took absolutely forever because Rafe wanted to do blue to match his eyes (once again) but you wanted a sage green because it was nice and calming which was a perfect way to describe this date. Certainly not this relationship yk how Rafe is.
“Okay your hand first cause it’s giant” you as you painted his hand a dark green.
“Hey you love these hands, especially these finger-”
“OKAY. So place it straight don’t make it crooked.” You guide his onto the canvas
“I can do it myself I’m a big boy okay y/n” he said placing his own hand down.
“Okay leave it there for a couple of seconds to get a good print.” You order.
You grab a lighter green to match his and paint your hand. The ticklish feelings and smell remind you of elementary, and the one time Jayj ate paint (not as a dare.)
“Oh that’s a cute color” Rafe said as you put the paint back.
“Okay you can take your hand off now. Longer you keep it, it’s probably gonna dry on there.” You joked.
“Don’t make it crooked.” He said as he grabbed your hand placing it down on the canvas on top if his.
After a couple of seconds you take it off and see the perfect imprints of you and Rafe.
“Aww it’s so cute!” You commented
“Oh now we have to make another, I’m gonna want one too.” He said admiring your art work.
“Here you go.” he said handing you a cup of sand
You sprinkle the sand ontop of the paint making sure to put enough then shaking the rest off.
“Okay now while this drys I wanna paint another.” you say grabbing another canvas.
You decide to paint a turtle on the beach. Turtles are your second animal cause they’re just so darn cute. As you paint, Rafe also decides to paint whatever he is. He has an assortment of colors and he’s just in his own world. As you watch him you can’t help but notice how his tounge pokes the inside of this cheek as he concentrates.
After 20 minutes, you finally have finished yours projects.
“Okay on, one…two…three!” You count down and flip your canvas.
“Oh thanks cute!” Rafe says and you stare as his… maybe pizza?
“Nice…I don’t even know. Rafe what is that?” You say confused.
“It’s a boat!” He says excited.
“Look it’s me and you!” He points to small blobs
“Oh I thought those were olives…”
“Y/n…” he says with a pout.
“Oh come on it’s cute!!!” You say trying to make him feel better.
“Maybe you should just keep to gallery walks instead of making the art…” you pat his shoulder as you both stare as his “boat”
“Your turtles are so good but look at my boat.”
“Rafe calm down it’s fine beside you can always buy classes.”
“But you’re a natural! It’s unfair.”
“Rafe quit it, besides you’re better at other things than me!” You try to cheer him up.
“Like what?”
“Golf”
“Wow lousy golf. Topper is the king let’s face it.”
“Whatever who cares he got cheated on.” You managed to crack a smile from him.
“Beside, you’re an absolutely an amazing boyfriend. My boyfriend.” He turns to look at you.
“Look at this amazing date you planed. And set up all by yourself too. Gotta give yourself props.” You give him a hug.
“Yeah I’m a pretty good man..” he said playfully rolling his eyes.
“My man.”
You guys share another slow and passionate kiss.
“Come on let’s clean this up. You can spend the night at mine.” You offer as you began to throw things into the basket.
“Okay good, I already told my dad I was.” He said as he grabbed the trash and threw it in a bag.
As you guys drive home you play your oldies playlists. You singing along while Rafe learns new songs.
Soon you guys make it to your house. Rafe parks the car and you guys make your way to the front door with him holding the insane amount of followers.
“Wait we never made my painting” Rafe stopped in his tracks.
“Here you can have the hands, I’ll take your pizza boat.” You say handing him his.
“Guess we have to have another date night to make another !! Ugh!” You said sarcastically.
“What a bore.” Rafe plays along.
You guys reach upstairs. Taking a joint shower because Rafe kept insisting on taking one first but you were too tired to wait. You both got the amazing date night, and hot and steamy sex.
┗ •◦இ•◦ ┛
Came out of hibernation and finally wrote 😩
Sorry for any typos I got too lazy.

Walter White Cringe Compliation
People are always like “oooOOooHH Heisenberg badass he’s the one who knocks!!!!!!” to the point I went into breaking bad expecting his character to be like that. But what I didn’t expect is that the guy is genuinely 90% of the time a cringy motherfucker. So here’s a list of all the cringe things walter white has done, to balance the scales a bit.
1. Yelled at a cop because his windshield got broken and he refused to fix it despite having recently gotten a large sum of money. Kept escalating until the cop pepper sprayed him and made him cry.
2. Told a high school gymnasium that the plane crash they were all reeling from wasn’t that bad, and that they’d get over it.
3. Quit his job by knocking random shit off the walls and yelling while grabbing his balls.
4. Ended up kicked out of his house and sleeping on the floor of an apartment in a white t-shirt, underwear, and cheetos surrounding him. Yelled “Here’s your restraining order!” while once more grabbing his crotch.
5. Brought a full pizza to his wife to try to make up for selling meth, and then threw the pizza on the roof on accident.
6. Tried to ram a potted plant through a window to get to the guy who was sleeping with his wife. He didn’t succeed.
7. He then tried to seduce his boss out of spite and got fired.
8. Made his son drink tequila shots until he threw up just to feel better than his brother-in-law.
9. Literally came up with a plan where he strips naked in a supermarket and “has amnesia”. It doesn’t work.
10. After his soooo badass “I am the one who knocks” speech (which btw is just him bullying his wife,) he awkwardly shuffles off and takes a shower.
11. He buys the most garish sports cars he can for himself and his son and revs the engines in the damn driveway while mentally playing the lamest song ever
12. His ideas to kill Gus were to ask his right hand man to kill Gus, and then when that failed, walk up to the man’s house, playing his own theme music in his head to hype himself up, and then getting told to just go home.
13. “AM I THE ONLY PERSON CAPABLE OF BEHAVING IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER?” Man who ruined his job prospects screams at Saul Goodman.
14. Made a terrible lie to Gus about Gale screwing up the batch and needing more time only for Gus to visit Walt at the hospital revealing he knew he was full of shit.
15. His absolutely awful lie about the second cell phone that Skyler doesn’t even believe
16. Spends a whole episode obsessing over and failing to kill a singular fly.
17. Tells his brother-in-law who is actively pursuing Heisenberg that Heisenberg might still be out there just because his ego couldn’t handle the thought of Gale getting the credit
I’m certain there’s more, but these all stick out to me. Stop with the “OOO HE BLEW UP TUCO” or “OOOH HE KILLED GUS” and remember that ninety percent of the time, Walter White was fucking embarrassing.

Even in such a big house you felt constantly watched, you felt like you could finally breathe once you got into your car. Aerea in the backseat, you let her watch something on your ipad for the trip so she wouldn’t get fuzzy, and was currently watching her favorite show with baby dragons in it.
You looked back at the huge mansion, and Aemond was staring back at you from the window that you guessed was his room…
Strange fella that one, you thought, as you took a long breath and started the car
You needed to put some distance
You wanted to erase from your mind what you did, you fucked Jace, in his grandfather’s house! his mother and family were under the same roof!
This has gone too far
You needed to get away
Harwin was going to get that job
He was going to move away
And you were going to move also, put some distance between them… you had to, this was not alright
You had interacted with Rhaenyra as she was your equal, Jacaerys’ mother, she was your generation, not Jace, this was wrong
When you went back to the house, Harwin had come back, and you sighed loudly, not ready to deal with him. You grabbed Aerea and he came out of the house to help you with your bags.
You felt guilty when he did all those nice things for you, he wanted you back, acting all kind, and sweet, and helpful,  and you were fucking his son
“How was it?”, he asked with that ridiculous sweet smile
“It was nice, but if you were here, why didn’t you make the journey up there?”, you asked trying not to sound accusing
“I just got back”, he answered simply, as you both entered your home
“Oh”
You didn't want to engage with him, but Saera started talking non-stop to his papa about the fun things she had done over the weekend and how nice her “daddy” had been
Harwin also didn’t notice any red flags about his own daughter calling his son “daddy” and him “dada”, what was wrong with them? it still made you nervous that your daughter did so…
“I can put Aerea to sleep”, he offered, “you go and relax momma”. Momma, he called you that since Aerea was born
You barely nodded, you were exhausted
You took a long shower, you washed your hair and took your time, and to your amazement, when you got out, Harwin had actually managed to make Aerea go to sleep, so it was only the two of you
“I ordered Pizza, your favorite”, he said with again… that sickly sweet smile
“That is very considerate Harwin, thanks”
No, you couldn’t do this to yourself, you couldn’t gave him not even an inch of space, he was going to slip right back in, you couldn’t
You ate the pizza and drank some wine in a silence so awkward it almost took your appetite away
But once you had drank between the two the whole bottle of wine, there was the perfect excuse to go back to your room, and you did, under Harwin’s hopeful gaze
You didn't have the strength to do anything else, you just dropped to the bed got under the covers and went to sleep
The days and weeks that followed blurred together in a weird daze
Harwin got the job outside of the city, so he was commuting almost every day, sometimes sleeping in a motel somewhere in between, trying to settle into his new job. And you were not going to let him back in, so he was coming to terms to look for another house, and that you were officially separated
It was hard to you too, you did not want to stay in the house anymore, even though it was beautiful and you loved it
You started working again and Aerea would stay with a nanny, and Jace… well…
He was attending the University up North, and the summer was coming to an end
For your best of lucks, you haven't seen him, the last time in his grandfather’s house was some sort of breaking point, the straw that broke the camel's back, the last drop to fill the glass, whatever you called it
What he had said, the danger it brought you
Instead of turning you on, it had sort of broke you
You didn’t want this anymore
You were a person, a rational person and as such you couldn’t think with your instincts, you had to be rational, and the rational thing to do was to divorce Harwin, get a house of your own, and start rebuilding your life, hoping that the next times you see Jace, other people were going to be present
You could do this
Besides, he hasn't said anything to you the last days, a part of you felt sad, he was, after all, using you, for the thrill of the forbidden sex, the taboo or Gods know what, that saddened you, that he was able to do all of this, just for his horniness and nothing else
But the biggest part of you, was extremely relieved, extremely relieved that he was slowly drifting to the background
It had to keep being like this
It was the best for all of you, if he could let this go.
You just dropped Aerea in her daycare, and then you entered your work building quickly, with coffee for you, Sara and your boss in hand, your heels clicking on the marble floor. Gods it was a long drive from your apartment, you knew that from your godmother’s apartment it would be a few blocks away
You needed to move
“Sorry I’m late, the barista took forever”, you said apologetically to your boss’ assistant
“No matter, but there is someone waiting for you at your office”, she murmured with a shy smile
“I had no meeting today”, you said worried
“He said he was a friend that needed to speak to you”
You frowned, not knowing what to expect, but as soon as you opened your office door, you gasped, not being able to hide your surprise
“What are you doing here?”, you asked.
The man raised from his seat slowly, his movements elegant and almost calculated
“Is that how you greet everyone?”, he asked in his soothing voice, but mocking you nonetheless
You stopped at the door to your office looking at him, he had not done anything to you, but, his mere presence upsetted you, you didn’t even know why.
But you smiled nonetheless
“I’m sorry”, you apologized, “it's just… I wasn’t expecting you”, he only smirked
Aemond Targaryen in the flesh
“You do work in business don’t you not?”
“Do you need counseling on business administration?”, you asked weirdly
“Of sorts”, he said, taking a seat in front of your desk, “I came in for a consultation, of a potential business opportunity, for you, and of course, for me”, you took your seat behind your desk and smiled
“Sure, what is it about?”, you asked
“I send you something to your business mail”, he said calmly, you wanted to know how he got it, but you refrained for questions you were afraid of the answers
As you were logging in your office computer, he spoke calmly, his straight posture, his relaxed demeanor, made you relax, until of course, he got to the point
“Since the first time I saw you I knew that we could be… acquainted…”
“Oh really?”, you asked nervously, the server was taking forever in loading your mail”. Aemond since the very time you saw him… gave you the creeps, he had something weird about him
“The moment you entered the Manor”, of course he would refer to his castle of a home as “a manor”, “all doe eyed and shy”, he purred, he made you terribly uncomfortable, incredible so, you shifted in your seat trying to hide a smile
“Maybe you would be more comfortable with my senior partner”, you muttered
“And then when i saw you at night though…”, his words were in the back of your mind as you finally opened the mail he had sent you, and the files attached to it
“.... Whining and moaning as a wanton whore when your own stepson was fucking you”, you gasped, your eyes filled with tears as you saw, videos and photos of you and Jace, in your guest room at the manor last weekend
“How…?”, you were already crying, fat tears streaming down your face
“Now now, don’t cry”, he said, amused, “there is no reason to be scared…”
“What do you want?”, you asked, “why are you here?”
“I told you… I think an arrangement between the two would be beneficial…”, you looked at him, frowning
Was he going to blackmail you? what for?
Oh gods, this was it, your biggest mistake, greatest indiscretion, right there, for everyone, anyone to see.
What had you done?
You wiped your tears decisively, it was done, there is nothing you could do about it, and now, it was going to fall on its own weight
“Aemond… What sort of arrangement? What could I possibly do for you…?”, you asked, trying to get calm
“Well, now but getting to you a little better I think… that I want the same arrangement my nephew is getting”, you looked up at him wide eyed
“Excuse me?”
“Yes, why would you settle with him? it’s too messy”, he said dismissively, as he was talking about a lab partner, “and besides, I have a thing for milfs”
“Shut up”, you demanded, now angrily, “what is it that you want, Aemond? I barely know you, you barely know me”
“I told you…”
“I’m not some whore”, you said angrily
“Really? could have fool me”, he mocked you
“Get out!”, you demanded, “get out of here”
“Are you sure?”, he asked, he didn’t even move, “I’m so clumsy you see, a wrong move of a finger and i can send those pictures to anyone! like my sister… or my brother in law”, another tear fell down your cheek
“What do you want?”, you asked then, he only chuckled
“To discover why would my idiotic nephew would ruin his relationship with his father for a shag with you”, he said, “you must be… quite the thing”
“I’m not a whore”, you said firmly
“Let’s cut to the chase”, he said, already bored of your reluctancy, “be mine, instead of his, and I won’t show these pictures to my family”, he said simply, “not to my sister, and not to my ex-brother in law”
“Why?”, you asked him
“Why?”, he asked back
“You are handsome and rich, why come after me? you could have any woman you’d ever wanted”, you said then
“Like I said, you have a thing, and I want it… whatever it is”
“Even if you are making me?”, you said
“Specially if I’m making you”, he teased with a sick smile
You took a second, only a second, to think about it
Would you seriously be going to let yourself be blackmailed by him? You are feeling so guilty about everything, maybe this had to happen, maybe this is how you pay for what you did
“Get out”, you repeated
“Are you sure?”, he asked back
“Get the hell out of my office”, you said back, he barely nodded, standing up, he took from his suit’s jacket a card and left it atop your desk
“If you change your mind… you have 24 hours”, he had a flare for the dramatic
He left your office elegantly, like everything else he did, and once he disappeared and closed the door behind you, you were able to breathe, finally
You took a long shaky breath
This was it, the payment for your sins.
You deleted the email, wiped your tears, and moved on with your work day.
Accepting his “offer” was out of the question, and you were splitting with Harwin, so, the repercussions wouldn’t be so large, you hoped
Perhaps your job? you always knew you wanted to move out of this city
Harwin, you were going to hurt him irreparably, him and his relationship with his son, that is what you were scared of the most, but they were father and son, maybe they could work through it, mabe…
The Targaryen shadow was a long one, but you had a family of your own, and in the worse case scenario, you were going to change cities and jobs, maybe have full custody of Aerea, and move even to a different country
You could do this
You grabbed Aemond’s card and destroyed in the paper crusher
The day turned long and as weird as its sounds, as you didn’t get another text from Jace, make your resolve even stronger, you called in a express moving company, and when you got home with Aerea, the movers were already in your place
“I’ll mark everything I want you to take with a pink post-it, the rest leave it”, you demanded to the guys, and they nodded.
You took everything you paid for, everything you had bought, and the bed as well, and in the end of the day, you were settled in your godmother’s apartment downtown, as easy as that
You started receiving texts and calls from Harwin, who had come home to an partially empty house.
“I really thought we were on our way to rebuild our home”, he said on the phone, and a single tear fell down your cheek, oh if he knew, well, he was going to soon enough
“I’m sorry Harwin, but i think this time apart has done me more good than bad and… and I thought about it, and infidelity is not something… someone should ever forget”, you heard him sigh over the line
“I’m so sorry love”
“Me too”, you said that with way more sentiment that you should have
“I wish we can keep being cordial, for Aerea’s sake”
“That goes without saying”, you whispered
“I’ll pick her up next week”, he said lowly
“I know you had concerns about we both living here downtown…”
“That was a bullshit excuse”, he said, “for you not to leave the house, but… i trust you”
“Alright, goodbye Harwin…”
“goodbye my love”, and you hang up the phone
. . .
You don’t know what Aemond did with those photos, since nobody had said anything or tell you anything… and you didn’t know if to feel relief, or even more guilt, somehow you were waiting for your atonement, but it never came
Jace sent you some texts, telling you he had come back to college to deal with some important things, you guessed… classes, he was going to come back soon according to him, but it was of no consequence, because you didn’t answer, you even blocked his number.
Aerea was with Harwin, and you just got home back from work, a couple of weeks had gone by and you… were feeling terribly wrong, something was terribly wrong with you..
Bitter tears fell down your face when you grabbed the pregnancy test you had bought from your purse, your throat constricted on a choke

Here In Your Arms: Charles LecLerc
Formula One Masterlist
word count: 700
prompts used: Tell me about your day baby, let me make it better + You're home early! featuring Character B shuffling into Character A's arms
a/n: had a stressful few days at work and wished that someone could've taken care of me :(
Tumblr media
You were absolutely exhausted by the time you reached home, you were supposed to be let off nearly an hour and half ago but had to stay because some needed to go home more than you apparently. This was still early considering when you normally got off work but when you've been at work since 7 this morning and told that you were getting off at 4:30 only not to get off until 5:20, you would be exhausted and ready to climb into bed. You quietly grabbed your bags, and walked up to your house, where you opened the door and walked in dropping your bags by the door.
"Hey baby, you're home early!" Your boyfriend Charles said.
You didn't said anything but instead quietly made your way into his arms and let out a huge sigh as you felt him wrap his arms around you. He gently rocked you guys for a few minutes as he rubbed your back trying to help ease some of the stress off your body.
"Tell me about your day baby, let me make it better." He said.
"It was exhausting we were short staffed which isn't shocking, corporate came today, three kids got sick which reminds me I shouldn't even be touching you, and I got yelled at for sitting so my feet are killing me and let's not forget I was supposed to get off at 4:30 and didn't get off until 5:30 because apparently others needed to go home more than me." You said running a hand through your hair.
"I'm sorry that happened baby, why don't you take a seat on the couch while I draw up a bath for you to help relax your muscles? And once you are nice and relaxed we can order some takeout and watch a movie or something if you would like that?" He asked me.
"I would love that but first I need a kiss or two." I said looking at him with a smile.
"I can happily help with that." He said with a smile as he placed a few kisses on my lips and then all over my face making me giggle.
"There's that beautiful laugh. Take a seat on the couch and rest your feet while I draw you a baby, okay?" He asked as you nodded your head.
A few minutes later, he came back and picked you bridal style refusing to let you be on your feet any longer today and carried you to the bathroom. He set you gently on your feet, helping your undress and helping you into the tub.
"Take your time and relax baby, I'll be here when you are done." He said to you.
"Actually bubs, do you think you could stay here in with me and tell me about your day?" You asked looking up at him.
"Of course I can baby." He said taking a seat by the tub and telling you all about his day.
After about thirty minutes you were relaxed and ready to get and hungry as you and your boyfriend heard your stomach growling. He helped you out and dried you off before letting you get dressed before you guys made your way towards y'all's room.
"Baby you know what sounds good?" You asked him.
"What's that sweetheart?" He asked you.
"Pizza." You said with a smile as you two took a seat on your bed.
"I was hoping you say that." He said with a smile as a knock came to the front door.
You watched as he disappeared out of y'all's room and then a few minutes later he returns with food from y'all's favorite pizza place.
"I had a feeling that you might want pizza tonight. So while I was drawing your bath, I ordered our usual. I hope it's alright?" He asked taking a seat next to you on the bed and placing the food in front of you.
"I love how you can read my mind, this is perfect. Thank you." You said leaning over and pressing a kiss to his lips.

All I ask
Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick x Reader
Summary: you and kyle try to contain the feelings you have for each other all while living together.
Warnings: none it’s so fluffy. Roommates to lovers, basically best friends to lovers. There’s mention of blood near the end but not extensive.
Word count: 5k
God I hope you guys like this one I changed the ending like 5 thousand times so honestly please love it or I’ll cry.
Tumblr media
“You’ve never learned how to dance?!”
Kyle laughed at the way you looked at him. Mouth open in surprise while the knife you were just using to cut some vegetables with was practically pointing in his direction almost in accusation.
“No, I’ve never exactly had the time. Yknow army and all?” You scoffed at his reply and turned back to your cutting board while he grabbed a glass of water.
He wanted to help you cook dinner but you quickly shut down the idea the moment he stepped into the kitchen not that long ago. Saying something about him being home a few weeks already and this was the first time you had a chance to cook him a meal.
You could almost get used to the domestic feeling of it all you almost have on more then one occasion before you had to remind yourself..he’s just a roommate.
Someone who had come to you almost two years ago now asking for the extra bedroom you had. You were desperate at the time, your old roommate had left without warning and you were left with only two weeks to find someone.
So when this rather nice military man came to you asking if it was still available you were more then happy to say yes. It helped he did look rather handsome but who’s asking.
He told you in his interviewing process how he really wouldn’t be here as much but he would keep up with the rent. You remember asking him why he was even getting a place and he mentioned family nearby he wanted to stay close too.
Didn’t mention the family he was talking about was his Captain who regularly stayed at the base that wasn’t to far from you. He didn’t mention it until about 6 months later.
“You really need to learn how to do that.” You mentioned while you dumped all the veggies into a pot on the stove. “How are you gonna whoo any girl you find attractive in those bars you and your friends go to?”
Kyle went silent at your words and it made you glance over to him. He wasn’t looking at you though his gaze seemed further away like there was something he wanted to say but held himself back.
“Can you get the chicken?” His eyes snapped to you when you called for him again. He quickly nodded and made his way to the fridge where he paused.
“Uh.”
You didn’t like the sound of that. “What? What is it?” You wiped your hands while walking closer to see what he was looking at.
It was the chicken you bought not that long ago but he had a cringe on his face. “This is expired.” You gaped at him and snatched the package from his hands.
“No way! I just bought-“ but as you turned it you saw it, clear as day. It expired last week. “That no good meat department man sold me bad chicken!”
Kyle laughed whole heartedly behind you and while you were annoyed at the situation you couldn’t deny the way his laugh filled the void you felt when he was gone.
You looked up at him with a frown and it only made him laugh harder. He reached for the phone, dialing a few numbers while he went to the stove and shut off the burner.
“What are you doing?” You were disappointed. You had been planning this dinner since he returned a few weeks ago and it just all went down the drain.
Kyle was still smiling at you when you walked past him to the trash bag to throw the chicken away. “Ordering pizza.” You turned to him with a thumbs up and let him order while you cleaned the rest of your unnecessary mess.
-
Awhile later you and Kyle found yourselves on the couch, pizza long gone. Now it was just the two of you drinking whatever alcohol he had leftover while he told you funny stories about his task force.
Things he could tell you, most of them being stuff they got up to on their downtime. You surmised awhile ago that when he and this ‘soap’ were together they caused the most trouble.
You loved listening to him talk, to see the way his eyes lit up when he spoke of the people who had become his family. It didn’t mean it hurt any less when he would leave but you knew what you agreed too. You just never thought you were going to fall in love with him in the process.
“There’s one thing about Price that everyone knows and it’s not to mess with the cigars.” He held up his hand in contemplation, “okay two things, his cigars or his hat. Completely off limits. I thought he was gonna wring Soaps neck when he grabbed it and took off. Never seen that man run faster in my life.”
The brief silence was cut short when Kyles phone started buzzing and suddenly the carefree look on his face hardened. It was so fast, if you weren’t used to it by now you may have been shocked.
He tried to give you a reassuring smile as he stood, “I’ll be right back.” He muttered, setting down his beer.
You couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed. You already knew what he was being called in for. Since moving in you’ve memorized his ringtones and this one was for when his Captain called him, and his captain never called unless it was to tell him about a new mission.
You learned a lot about him from the short time you’ve lived together even when he was gone for a lot of it. You memorized his routines. Almost all of them.
When he came home from long missions you knew he’d be so tired he would kick his shoes off at the door instead of putting them inside because he would clean them of the dirt and mud the next morning. He was always so tidy, you told him multiple times he can leave things around but he always laughed you off.
You honestly wish he would leave things around. Make his mark on the apartment so it didn’t feel so lonely.
You were so deep in thought you didn’t notice when Kyle came back into the room, you never had. The man walked like he was floating. He could see the disappointment in your gaze and it made his heart hurt.
He tapped his phone against his palm a few times, gaining your attention. He stood there for a few more minutes just thinking before he tossed his phone on the couch and walked over to you with his hand held out.
You glanced at him in confusion but he only smiled. “You said someone has to teach me how to dance right? Then come on teach me.” Instantly a smile spread across your face and you eagerly took his hand in yours.
“Okay Mr. Garrick.” He only laughed at you while you quickly scrolled through your phone to find a playlist of some of your favorite songs. “You gotta loosen up first okay? You look nervous so just don’t?”
You grabbed his hands and the two of you danced around goofily for the next several songs. Kyle on multiple occasions would spin you around, laughing–telling you it was the only move he was confident in.
At some point he spun you around so many times you all but collapsed into his arms, laughing. You felt like your head was spinning but you were having the best time of your life.
It wasn’t until the next song started that you realized the situation you were in. Kyle had his arms wrapped tightly around you like he was keeping you from falling to the ground and you were practically pressed against his chest.
You coughed slightly just to get his attention and immediately he loosened his hold but didn’t completely let go of you just enough for you to situate yourself. “Okay now for the real deal. This is where you’d get all the ladies so watch and learn.”
He allowed you to move his hands to where they needed to be, one on your waist and the other holding loosely onto your other hand. “Since you seemed to like spinning me so much this one is the perfect way to do it.” He only nodded at you as you both began to take small steps.
He moved with you which didn’t surprise you in the slightest he was always a fast learner. You were watching the floor to keep from making eye contact with him but it didn’t help that you could feel the heat of his palm on the small of your back.
He gently let your waist go to spin you, this time he made sure not to spin you an extensive amount of times. But instead of spinning you all the way back around to face him he spun you until your back was facing him and the hand holding yours came down across your collarbones to pull you gently to his chest while his other hand went back to holding your waist.
You felt your breathe still when you realized what happened. Your heart felt like it was beating a mile and minute, so fast you couldn’t even tell if you could feel his heart doing the same.
You felt his breathe on the side of your neck and then you felt his lips skim the shell of your ear. You almost wondered if he knew what he was doing or if this was just instinctual.
“S-so that’s definitely a way to impress a girl.” You said, swallowing thickly when you felt the hand on your waist move down to your hip where he squeezed a little tighter like he was trying to ground himself.
You felt his lips leave your ear but you could also feel the deep breathe he took–his chest rising and falling behind you. “Kyle?” You whispered softly and his arm across your chest flexed against you.
He took one more deep breathe before loosening his hold and letting you slip from his arms but he kept one hand still grasped in his. You felt your face heat up and if he noticed he didn’t mention it, instead he gave your hand a small squeeze. “Sorry, let’s continue.”
His voice sounded rough like it hurt him to let you go. You watched him for a moment but he couldn’t hold your gaze. He had you pressed so close to him, if it were up to him he would’ve never let you go but he knew he had to. This was just supposed to be a fun teaching moment he couldn’t turn it into something more.
Then the song came to an end and a few seconds later ‘All I ask’ by Adele started to play. You took a few steps closer to him again, “okay now this next one may be how you get a girl to fall for you.” You joked.
You moved both his hands to your waist and he pulled you closer almost instantly while yours went to wrap around his neck. The moment felt so intimate when he finally looked you in the eyes.
‘-if this is my last night with you
Hold me like I’m more then just a friend’
You felt him shudder against you when you started tickling the back of his neck. He searched your eyes when one of your hands moved from behind his head to cup the side of his jaw.
His whole world felt like it stood still when you looked at him like that, like he was your whole world. Like he was the most precious thing that you wanted to hold close. If you just said the words he would let you hold him as long as you wanted.
‘-give me a memory I can use.
Take me by the hand while we do what lovers do.’
He could see it in the way you looked at him that you were searching for something. For comfort? He wasn’t sure until he realized just how close you both were now and his arms held tighter onto you.
This was so much worse than having your back to him. Because now he had no way of calming himself down. Not when he could see every detail about you so close to him.
His thumbs rubbed soothing circles in your waist while he moved closer to you. He was so close now you could feel his breathe on your lips and you wanted nothing more then to close the distance completely.
You felt your breathe hitch when you saw how intensely he was looking at you. It was like he could see right through you, like he could see everything you were feeling, everything you’ve ever tried to hide from him.
You could feel his lips graze yours now as well as the way his hands moved. One hand was pressed to your lower back and another at your upper back like he was trying to keep you from slipping away this time.
Both your hands were now resting softly at his neck while your gaze flicked between his eyes and his lips. When you looked at him though you realized he wasn’t doing much better.
His breathing seemed to be more ragged and his hands tensed against you as if he was holding himself back.
‘-it matters how this ends
Cause what if I never love again?’
You both were tiptoeing the line that was drawn between you the moment he moved in. One of you moving just a centimeter closer just to pull back slightly.
Your fingers were skimming his jaw line softly, reveling in the way he tensed at your touch. You were a hair's breadth away from each other when you heard his phone ding with an incoming text.
You pulled apart instantly as if pulled from a trance. You were still in his arms but now a safe distance away from his lips and he moved his hands back down to your waist slowly.
He watched you glance behind him to the couch where his phone was lit up. “When do you leave?” You asked quietly while you both continued to sway softly side to side.
“Tomorrow.” You nodded sadly. “I’ll be gone awhile. This one sounded serious. Try not to miss me to much yeah?”
It was meant to be a joke and you could see it in the way he tried to give you a soft smile but all you could do was frown. “I always miss you.” You muttered.
He sighed and brought his hand to the back of your head to pull you closer to him so he could leave a kiss on your hairline. Muttering a soft “I know.”
You continued to sway long after the song was over and what felt like long after the night had ended. You spent as much time as you possibly could with him because you knew tomorrow morning you would be holding onto him as if that would get him to stay. It wasn’t like he held onto you just as tight wishing he wasn’t leaving.
“Be careful.” You would tell him as he left and he’d give you a cheeky grin and kiss you on the cheek as he rushed out the door before replying.
“Always for you.”
~~
It wouldn’t be until months later that the mission would actually finally finish up. It was a very top secret one so he wasn’t able to talk to you, though those were quite a bit of his missions.
He thought about you almost daily. The last night you spent together dancing was something that got him through a lot of tough spots while he was away.
It helped especially when his job required him to see such dark spots in the world he could always recall a memory where you were the light and it never failed to make him remember just exactly what he was fighting for.
Before you came into his life there were some day where he had a hard time understanding the difference between good and bad. Some days he even considered himself to be a bad guy, for letting innocent people get killed because he was too slow to stop a threat.
Other days he couldn’t understand where to draw the line like his Captain had told him and he would get lost in his own head.
It was price that told him to go find an apartment off base because he could see the way it was effecting him to be there all the time. So really he had his Captain to thank yet blame for ever meeting you.
He remembered the first few weeks you started living together, it was awkward at the time but now was a cherished memory of his he came back to often. There had been so many times you apologized about any little mess you made just because you saw how tidy he was but he always waved you off with a smile.
He remembered all the shopping trips you went on together or how you would build furniture together. More like you read him the instructions and he finished it all in under twenty minutes.
He remembered the gradual time spent getting to know each other. The time he spent slowly but surely opening up to you about things and the way you did as well. Even if he spent a lot of time away he knew almost everything about you.
It’s safe to say you were the only thing on his mind as the mission wrapped up and he along with Ghost and Soap went to a bar nearby to unwind when in reality all he wanted to do was go straight home just so he could see you and hug you again.
“So when’re you gonna introduce us to this ‘roommate’ of yours Gaz?” Soap asked after they finished there first round of drinks.
Kyle laughed and played with the bottle in his hand, trying to ignore the way his face suddenly felt hot at the insinuation. “Don’t know. And she is just a roommate.” Ghost and Soap shared a look.
“Seriously?” Ghost asked and Kyle nodded in confirmation. Ghost grunted in disbelief. “There’s no way. You talk about this girl way to much for her to be just a roommate.”
“Gaz..” soap held his hand up, interrupting whatever Kyle was about to say. “You’ve talked about this girl almost everyday for a year and a half now. And how long have you been living together?”
“Almost two years.” He mumbled playing with the rim of his beer. “We’re coming up on the end of the lease again in a few months.”
“And I bet you haven’t thought about leaving that apartment huh? I don’t think it’s even crossed yer mind.” Kyle rolled his eyes at Soap and pushed away his beer.
He wasn’t exactly wrong.
“Just grow a pair and tell her you love her already.” Ghost grumbled, “save the rest of us from the sad puppy dog eyes you get every time you talk about her.”
“Or you could introduce us, who knows maybe she’d like a Scottish man.” Soap teased as he nudged Kyles shoulder.
Kyle leveled him with a glare that only served to make Soap laugh harder than he had been. “This is why I won’t.” He wouldn’t admit that he was nervous about the idea of you meeting his task force. What if you found them scary? Or worse, found one of them attractive and asked him for their number? He couldn’t handle that.
“As enlightening as this conversation has been, I’m gonna head home.” Kyle threw a few bills from his wallet onto the counter and slid his beer over to Soap who greedily took it after he finished his second one not even a minute earlier. “I’ll see you boys later.”
“Hopefully with some news!” Soap called out to him as he exited the bar making Kyle shake his head laughing.
It didn’t take him long to make it back to the apartment and he couldn’t deny the way his heart sped up the moment he could see one of the lights in the apartment was on.
He didn’t call to tell you he was coming home like he got in the habit of doing. He wanted to surprise you this time especially when the last he spoke to you was almost a month ago and he told you he wasn’t sure when he would be coming back.
So after a few minutes of gathering himself, he grabbed his bag and headed for the door. It was oddly quiet when you were alone and he almost wondered if you were asleep and just forgot to turn off the lights.
“Y/n?” He called out into the quiet apartment.
“Kyle?!” Was what he heard back followed by a loud crash and glass shattering.
He dropped everything he was holding at the door and ran in the direction of the noise, completely forgetting about his boots he had yet to take off at the door.
All he knew was that you could be in danger or you could’ve been hurt and he felt his whole world came crashing down slightly.
For a moment it felt like his world all at once stopped moving and started spinning too fast. He felt sick.
“Y/n?!” He rounded the corner to the kitchen and saw you on the ground clutching your head. A few mugs were shattered on the floor around you. “What happened?”
“Kyle.” You breathed the moment you opened your eyes to look at him. You stared at him with such relief he felt like he may just collapse next to you. “Uh-I fell.”
“I see that. What were you doing?” He asked while he carefully helped you up and slowly maneuvered you away from the shattered pieces on the ground.
“Well I was just trying to make hot chocolate before you scared the absolute hell out of me.” You winced, one hand still clutching your head where he finally noticed some blood trickling down your wrist. “It’s not my fault you put all the good bugs so high up.”
“Good mugs?” He looked down at the glass and then to the cupboard. “You mean my mugs?”
“They’re the good ones.” You grumbled. “They hold more hot chocolate. I’m sorry for breaking them.”
He couldn’t help but laugh as he pulled your hand away from your head to examine the damage. “I don’t care about the mugs. I can get new ones but it looks like one hit you pretty hard. Let me help you get it cleaned up”
He ushered you towards the counter on the opposite side of the kitchen where he knew he had the med kit stashed. Without saying a word he grabbed hold of your waist and lifted you up to sit on the counter before he went to get the med kit and a washcloth.
“When did you get back?” You called out to him as he ran to the spare closet in the hall to grab one of the many wash clothes.
“Earlier today. I just got back from the bar with Ghost and Soap.” You couldn’t help the way your heart skipped at the mention of a bar. “But I just wanted to come home. I’m sure they’re still there.”
“No pretty ladies you wanted to impress with your amazing new dance skills?” You joked when he came back over to you to start cleaning the blood from your cut.
“Not at the bar, no. There’s one I’ve been trying to impress already.” You swallowed as you watched him work intently. His brows furrowed in concentration. “The cut doesn’t look too bad so you shouldn't need stitches but please if you need something moved from the top shelf just ask me.”
You nodded in acknowledgment and let him continue to work in silence. He was standing between your legs and the only noise was his occasional rummaging through the med kit.
He glanced down at you every now and then but you now seemed determined to not look him in the eye and he couldn’t help but frown.
His fingers work softly across the cut on your head making sure he wasn’t going to hurt you anymore then you already hurt yourself but he couldn’t help the way his mind wandered to ghost and soaps words.
“You okay?” You asked finally when you noticed the way his frown seemed to deepen by the minute.
“Hm?” Immediately he was smiling again and nodding like nothing happened. “Yeah don’t worry. Just focused.”
You hummed in understanding before the silence fell over you again. “Did everything go okay with work? You didn’t get hurt too bad did you?”
He laughed, “unless you count falling out a helicopter as bad then no.” He thought it was funny until he saw the absolute shock on your face and his words seemed to settle over him. “Just kidding. Just kidding that didn’t happen. I’m okay!”
“You fell out of a helicopter?!” You yelled, wincing when you accidentally moved which made his fingers slip against your cut.
“I’m fine! It was a joke I promise.” You didn’t seem to believe him but decided to let it go when he kept insisting. “Everything turned out okay. I'm just happy to be home. They’re all done.”
He moved his hands to rest on the counter you were sitting on, caging you in. He noticed the way your eyes flickered between both of his and he decided for once his team was right. He had to tell you. He didn’t know if he could live another day not knowing if you felt the same way.
“Kyle?” You asked when once again he went silent but this time he had a soft smile on his face while he looked down at you. It made your heart race.
“There’s something I need to tell you.” He said softly, reaching one hand up to move a stray piece of hair behind your ear before bringing it back down to the counter. “I tried to keep it to myself but I don’t think it’s possible for me to do that anymore.”
“Keep what to yourself?” You whispered, heart beating fast when he leaned down a little closer to you.
He looked into your eyes like he was searching for any sort of hesitation, any sort of sign that he should stop or pull back now. But he found none. He leaned in again, the memory of the two of you dancing while also this close came rushing to him again and he smiled slightly. “I think I’m in love with you.”
You looked at him in surprise. It was your turn to search for any sort of lie but you knew Kyle would never lie to you about something like that. “Really?” He nodded and you could feel his lips barely just touch yours before he pulled back a little like he was still waiting for you to reject him. “I think I’m in love with you too.”
And that was all he needed to hear before he closed the distance entirely. His lips finally smashing into yours while one of his hands went up to cup your cheek and the other to your waist to pull you closer to him. You were practically on the very edge of the counter, your legs wrapped around his waist to make sure you didn’t fall off entirely.
He kissed you like he was a starving man deprived of oxygen for the last 2 years. Every emotion he harbored for you was poured into that kiss as his hand tangled itself into the strands of your hair.
His lips felt softer than you imagined and it was better than anything your mind could come up with. Your hands found purchase on his chest as you tried to steady yourself. From this spot you could feel the way his heart was beating just as fast as yours.
When he finally pulled away he didn’t move far. His lips were still just a few centimeters away; he just moved far enough away so you could catch your breathe. He could feel you practically gasping and it made his hands wander to your thighs that were still wrapped around his waist.
He was mesmerized by the way your chest rose and fell with the deep breathes you took. The way your cheeks had the prettiest shade of pink dusting them. The way your eyes continued to look at him like he was the only thing you were seeing.
He was sure he looked the same to you. He knew right then that he would do absolutely anything for you and wouldn’t regret it a single bit.
“Well that’s definitely another way of getting a girl to fall for you.” You joked as you reached your arms up to circle around his neck and pull him closer. “But now you’re not allowed to show anyone else those dance moves.”
“I only ever wanted to learn for you anyways.” He pressed a quick kiss to your lips again. “Would you say you’re impressed?”
“Thoroughly.”
He laughed and pulled away from you after stealing yet another kiss. “Well let me get changed, then clean the glass and I can show you just how much I’ve improved.” He winked you at, smiling when he heard your laughter carry through the apartment
He guessed he owed his entire task force now.

Joel had never had a reason to be happy when Sarah left.
Not that he was happy she was gone. He missed her before she’d even gotten through security at the airport. But this time was different.
Before when Sarah left - when she drove back to college or he took her to the airport - Joel would smile until she was out of sight. Keep on the brave face so she wouldn’t feel bad about leaving. Then, he would trudge back to his truck or back in the house and try to not think about how acutely empty his life felt now that she was gone again. That was the problem when your whole world was your kid. If you raised them right, eventually they leave you.
But now, Sarah leaving had a silver lining: seeing you.
He was getting addicted to you, that much he knew. He’d only spent the night at your place twice now but he still found himself wanting to pull your soft, warm body against him when he went to sleep. When he saw a food truck that looked interesting, you were the first thing he thought of. When he looked for a movie to watch, he wanted to text you to see if you’d seen it, what you thought of it. You were in everything now, some part of his mind always lingering on you, second only to Sarah.
He’d all but raced to your place the night before. The second Sarah had disappeared through the security checkpoint he felt the familiar twinge of sadness, the longing for the time when she was a little girl who would come home from school and babble about whatever subject had caught her mind that week and they would watch a cartoon and he would read to her before she went to sleep. But the fog of loneliness that usually clung to him in the days right after Sarah left wasn’t there. Instead, there was you. You and your sexy little sundress and your collection of movies and your postcards from places you’d lived hanging on your fridge.
Joel still wasn’t sure why you seemed to be as desperate for him as he was for you. The way you pulled him into your apartment and all but ripped his clothes off, the way you rode his cock and moaned his name didn’t make any sense to him. But you did. And then you sat across from him at a picnic table outside some hole in the wall pizza place he’d taken you to and laughed so hard at something stupid he said that you almost fell off the faded wooden bench. You were the most beautiful woman Joel had ever been with and there you were, wanting to be with him, too.
He picked up donuts for the crew on his way to the job site Thursday morning. He was in such a good mood, he couldn’t help it. He’d woken up next to you that day and was going to fall asleep next to you that night. It was going to be a good fucking day.
“The hell got into you?” Tommy asked when he got to the site later that morning.
“What d’you mean?” Joel frowned, leaning against the truck bed next to Tommy.
“You look…” Tommy gestured vaguely at Joel’s face. “Not miserable. Which is a fuckin’ miracle since Sarah went home last night. So, what the hell got into you?”
“Nothin’,” Joel shrugged quickly. “Just having a good day is all.”
“Sure,” Tommy scoffed lightly, going to check on the status of some drywall. Joel took the moment alone to check his phone. You’d sent him a selfie, smiling hugely with your iced latte, looking like he’d made your whole damn day.
“You’re setting a high bar here, Miller,” you texted. “But thank you!”
You’d sent a heart emoji, too.
It made Joel’s actual heart skip a beat. That stupid little cluster of red pixels had his mind going a mile a minute, analyzing your every move for the past few weeks for any indication that you might feel the same way he was starting to.
“Got you to send me a selfie,” he replied. “Think I’m winning in this exchange.”
He checked his email and was about to stick his phone back in his pocket to get back to work when you sent another selfie. This one just at your desk in your office, just as beautiful with all your makeup on and your hair done but less intimate than the one from the morning with your skin bare and your eyes cloudy with sleep. But there was the trade off of cleavage in your form-fitting dress and he wasn’t about to argue with that.
“About to go wine and dine a client,” you wrote. “Fingers crossed for me!”
Joel smiled.
“Don’t think you need any help from me, Beautiful, but knock em dead!”
There was a cabinet delivery that Joel had to supervise - check over the different pieces to make sure nothing was damaged and everything was sized right - and it was so hard to not keep checking his goddamn phone. He wanted to see if you’d texted, see how your lunch had gone, pull up the selfies of you he’d started saving in a separate folder so he could find them easier and just look at you when he needed a reason to remember that life could be good to him sometimes.
When he checked his phone again after the delivery, he had a text from you. He smiled for a second and opened it but his heart sank as soon as he read it.
“So sorry, something came up at work,” you wrote. “Can’t see you tonight.”
He tapped his phone against his palm for a moment, trying to think of how to respond. You probably wouldn’t want a clingy guy but it felt wrong to pretend like he wasn’t disappointed by it.
“Shit happens. I’ll miss you. Tomorrow night?”
You had read receipts turned on and you opened the message right away. He stared at his phone, waiting for you to reply. But you didn’t. After a few minutes he couldn’t justify not working anymore and stuck his phone back in his pocket and got back to it.
He didn’t see Tommy again until that afternoon. He’d snuck a peek at his texts half a dozen times at least since your last message but you still hadn’t replied.
“Oh hey, before I forget,” Tommy said, jogging to catch up with him. “Maria wanted me to invite you over for dinner tonight.”
Joel sighed.
“Can you tell Sarah that I don’t need babysittin’?” He said, a little harsher than he meant to.
“And there’s the asshole I expected at work this mornin’,” Tommy clapped him on the shoulder.
“Sorry,” Joel sighed again. “Really, not tryin’ to be…”
“S’OK,” Tommy shrugged. “Does Sarah want to make sure you’re not just sitting at home, watching paint dry? Sure. But do I actually like seeing your sorry ass outside of work? Yeah, I do. And Maria rightly pointed out that we don’t get out the same way we used to now that she tied me down…”
Joel snorted.
“Lucky she’d have you and you know it.”
“Yeah yeah,” Tommy smiled a little. “But really. Come over, have some beers. Maria is making ribs and cornbread and potato salad and if you don’t help us eat it all I’ll be sick of it by the end of the week. You’d be doin’ me a favor, honestly.”
“Alright, alright,” Joel smiled a little. “Stop sellin’ it so hard, I’ll come over.”
“Now was that so fuckin’ difficult?” Tommy smiled back. “Tonight, six. Bring a change of clothes if you want, we’ll make up the guest bed, drink through some of the moonshine I’ve got sittin’ around.”
“Tommy, it’s fuckin’ Thursday.”
“It’ll be Friday somewhere,” Tommy winked.
Joel rolled his eyes. Apparently even marrying a lawyer wasn’t going to make Tommy stop being Tommy.
When Joel left work that evening, you still hadn’t texted back. He hoped you were alright, that you weren’t too stressed. But he was also starting to wonder if he’d fucked up somewhere and hadn’t realized it. You always texted him back the second you saw his message. You’d always been nothing but up front and transparent, none of the stupid games he remembered trying to play when he was dating back when he was closer to Sarah’s age. What if trying to see you all the damn time was too much too soon? Especially right after Sarah had been in town, the reminder that the two of you were sneaking around behind her back and putting one of the most important relationships in both of your lives at risk so the two of you could do… whatever the fuck it was you were doing. What if he just misread your signals and you were having fun but not looking for anything else? What if you just weren’t that interested?
He showered and grabbed his phone from the counter halfway through, finding the pictures you’d sent the other night, the ones where you were touching yourself to the idea of fucking him. He came so hard he made a mess of his shower wall and he was still panting for breath when you - finally - texted back.
“Don’t think so,” you replied. “Looks like I’ll be hung up through the weekend at least. I’ll text when things free up.”
You sent a little heart at the end of that text, too, which made Joel feel a little better at least. He wondered if it would be weird to bring a coffee by your office or send you flowers. It’s not like he’d ever visited you at work before. But he wanted to make your week better, not have it be filled with stress and whatever else was bringing this on.
He was still distracted when he made it to Tommy and Maria’s that evening, a six pack in hand. Part of him was trying to picture coming here with you, picture folding you into his daily life. Maybe you’d hold his hand as the two of you walked up to the door, maybe you’d lean against his shoulder when he put his hand on the small of your back as you talked with his sister-in-law, maybe you’d raise your eyebrows at him in just the right way when you were ready to head out and then let him fuck you when the two of you got home.
“Hey man!” Tommy opened the door, looking Joel up and down. He frowned a little. “Who pissed in your cheerios?”
Joel frowned back.
“Weren’t you just sayin’ I was in too good a mood?” He passed Tommy the beer.
“Yeah, this is how I expected you to show up to work,” Tommy said, leading the way inside. “Like someone kicked your dog right in front of you. Everything OK?”
“Fine,” Joel shrugged, wishing he could actually talk to Tommy about what was happening with you. He was married now, he’d clearly done something right. “You said something about moonshine?”
“Hell yeah,” Tommy clapped him on the shoulder and headed for the kitchen.
Joel was surprised to find that he really liked spending the evening with Tommy and Maria. He only checked his phone for a message from you half a dozen times - far less than he would have if he were at a bar alone or sitting on his couch. He was pleasantly tipsy and still trying to get the last of the BBQ sauce off his fingers when Tommy and Maria gave each other a small look before Tommy spoke.
“So,” he said, looking like he was trying to not smirk. “Got a question for you.”
“Shoot,” Joel said, frowning slightly before taking a swig of his beer. Nothing good had ever come from Tommy looking at him like that.
“Just how long have you been fucking Sarah’s friend?”
Joel choked on the beer and almost dropped the bottle onto the table as he coughed and tried to clear his throat.
“What?” He managed, still coughing.
“Think you heard me just fine,” Tommy smirked and Maria elbowed him, raising her eyebrows at him. “Right, sorry, don’t worry, we didn’t tell Sarah…”
“You say anything to her?” Joel asked, his mind working overtime. If Tommy or Maria had talked to you, maybe that’s why you were pulling away. That would explain everything.
“Course not,” Tommy said. “How long have I been sayin’ you need to get laid? Not out to fuck that up for you, probably take you 10 years before you found another woman who would fuck you…”
“What my husband is trying to say,” Maria cut him off with a glare. Tommy laughed. “Is that we weren’t looking to get in the middle of anything…”
“I don’t know why you’d think there was anything to get in the middle of,” Joel interrupted her, but Tommy barked a laugh.
“Brother, if you’re gonna fuck a girl in the bathroom at a party, you might want to try to be a little quieter about it,” he was grinning like the cat that ate the goddamn canary.
Joel groaned and put his face in his hand.
“Jesus Christ. Who else knows?”
“Just us,” Maria said, her voice calm and even. “And it wasn’t THAT bad. I happened to come in to use the bathroom at just the wrong time.”
“Just the right time if you ask me,” Tommy said.
“Oh fuck off,” Joel glared at him. He laughed again.
“Look,” Maria glared at Tommy who tried to stop laughing and did a shit job of it before looking back at Joel. “You’re both adults, it’s your business. We just didn’t know if Sarah knew, if you two were a couple or just having fun or what…”
“I have no fuckin’ idea,” Joel sighed even though there was an odd relief in him. It was nice to know that he could actually talk to someone about this now. Nice to not have to try to figure it all out himself. “Sarah doesn’t know. We didn’t mean to, Sarah’s the one who had us meet in the first place, thinkin’ we could both use a friend but Jesus Christ, Tommy, she’s like the perfect fuckin’ woman. She’s gorgeous, so goddamn pretty I was staring at her across the damn bar before I knew who she was, swear I was half done in for her before I ever even talked to her. But she’s so smart, I could listen to her talk all week about anything and she’d make it interesting. And she likes the same shitty movies I do, the same music…”
“Damn,” Tommy said, smiling a small smile at Joel now. “She really is perfect. You’re fucked, man.”
Joel frowned.
“C’mon,” he said. “I don’t…”
“I haven’t seen you like this about a girl since we were in high school,” Tommy smirked. “You’re down bad. Where’s she at with all this shit?”
“I don’t fuckin’ know,” Joel sighed again. “I haven’t done this in so damn long I feel like I’m fucking it all up. Feels like it’s too soon to talk about it but man, besides Sarah? She’s all I fuckin’ think about anymore. But I was supposed to see her tonight but she had to cancel this afternoon…”
“Explains the mood change from this morning,” Tommy nodded.
“I’m terrified of messing up with this,” Joel said, bouncing his foot impatiently under the picnic table. “I don’t want to lose her, I want to do this right. I just don’t know what that looks like anymore.”
“Joel,” Maria leaned across the table and covered his worried hands with one of her own. “You’re a great guy. If she can’t see that, she’s not the woman for you.”
“You plannin’ to tell Sarah?” Tommy asked, before Joel had a chance to argue with Maria’s point.
“I don’t know,” he sighed. “Seems like the right move but I don’t know how to bring it up. I don’t want to fuck things up but we can’t sneak around forever. She deserves better than us sneakin’ around behind her back like goddamn teenagers. But I don’t want to hurt Sarah, they’re so damn close, I can’t see her being happy about this.”
“Well, is she worth the risk?” Maria asked, brows raised. “Does she make you happy? Do you see a future with her?”
Joel thought for a moment.
In the weeks since he’d met you, Joel was the happiest he had been in years. You were something he looked forward to, something he wanted to wrap himself up in so he was surrounded by you all the time. All he wanted to do was be next to you. It seemed like everything in the world would be better if it was next to you. If he could wait in line at the grocery store and look over to see you reading back over the list to make sure you didn’t forget anything, if he could pull weeds in the front yard while you set out flowers where you wanted them to go in the garden, if he could come home after an absolute shit day at work and find you napping on the couch when he got there, it felt like life would be worth it. Like all the shit he’d lived through, the years where he was positive he wasn’t doing the right thing with his daughter because he had no idea what the right thing was, the years he came home from work sore and tired and wishing he could have somehow had both Sarah and his dreams, the years he’d been so short on cash he was worried his card would get declined at the grocery store, all of that would fucking mean something. It all led to you in the end.
“Yeah,” he nodded. “Yeah, she makes me happy. So fucking happy. And I do see a future with her and I want it. I want it so damn much that I need to try. I don’t think I can just stop this now I just… I’m so afraid of fucking this up. When was the last time I had a relationship that actually fuckin’ worked?”
“High school,” Tommy said. Joel glared at him. “Sorry, probably not a real question…”
“No, it wasn’t,” Joel muttered. “But I’m one thing all those relationships had in common. Me. There’s something I do that just fucks it all up and I cannot risk that with her.”
“Joel,” Tommy shook his head a little. “You really think that? That you’re going to fuck up every relationship you’re ever in?”
“That’s sure as hell what it feels like,” he sighed. “I dunno, maybe it’d be better to break shit off now. Before it goes any further and before Sarah finds anything out and I manage to fuck up with her too…”
“Why, you really want to be alone forever?” Tommy asked, incredulous from across the table. “When I said I hadn’t seen you like this since we were kids, I meant that. You’re happy. I haven’t seen that, outside of Sarah, in fuckin’ decades. If you end it because you’re afraid of fucking it up, you’re just as alone as if you let it run its course. Just do the damn thing, man. Get out of your damn head and have a real conversation with this woman and stop setting yourself up to fail.”
Joel nodded for a moment, his jaw clenched.
It was like he was standing at the edge of a cliff with everything he wanted sitting at the bottom of it. The only way down was to jump and trust that the parachute he’d packed himself would get him there without destroying it all. But there was terror in that, too. He didn’t want to hurt you or Sarah or himself. He didn’t want to put you all through something that would just blow up.
But fuck if he didn’t want to see what life with you could be.
“You’re right,” he said. “You’re both right. But fuck, that’s…”
“It’s scary,” Maria finished for him when he trailed off. “But most things worth doing are.”
He just nodded again.
“Any reason you’re worried you’re fucking up?” She asked. “Or just anxiety from past relationships?”
“I dunno,” he fished his phone out of his pocket. “I’m probably reading too much into this shit but…”
He unlocked it and found your text messages and scrolled to the start of the day.
“Don’t… uh… don’t scroll up past that…”
“Oh damn, you been sexting like a fuckin’ teenager?” Tommy cut him off. Joel glared daggers at him. He laughed. “Good for you, man.”
“Anyway,” Joel continued. “Things seemed normal this morning but she canceled plans last minute, took a lot longer to respond to my messages than usual… Just feels like I messed up somewhere and don’t know what I did.”
Maria nodded slowly, looking down at the phone and scrolling down, nodding along. She handed the phone back to Joel.
“Sounds like she’s just got a lot on her plate,” she said. “She said she was helping set up a new branch down here, right? Probably just has something with a really tight deadline that got added to her workload last minute. Don’t sweat it and just… be there when she’s done.”
“Right,” Joel nodded, the knot in his stomach loosening. “You’re right. I’m bein’ crazy. I’m sure it’s nothing.”
Joel tried to keep that in mind through the weekend when you sent two or three word responses to the texts he did send. He tried to not think about the fact that this was the first weekend he’d spent on his own since he’d met you, how much you’d already become part of the pattern of his life, how much he looked forward to downtime so he could spend it with you. He tried not to let the grip of anxiety rule him as he found ways to keep busy around the house. He fixed a few things he’d been putting off, wiped down shit he normally didn’t touch like fan blades and the tops of his kitchen cabinets, washed his truck in the driveway even though the forecast next week called for rain.
“Hope things are getting better for you at work, Beautiful,” he texted when he was on a break Monday afternoon. “Missing you. Can I bring you dinner or anything?”
The read receipt showed it as read almost immediately but you didn’t respond. He groaned and shoved his phone back in his pocket.
“Still not acting normal?” Tommy asked.
“No,” Joel sighed. “I dunno, maybe I got in too deep too fast here. I thought we were on the same page but…”
“Just give her some space,” Tommy said. “Like Maria said, don’t sweat it yet, alright? Not like I know the girl but she sure seemed into you. Don’t think she’s just going to disappear on ya.”
Joel wasn’t sure he believed it but he nodded along just the same.
He pulled back on the texts. Maybe that was the right move but he wasn’t sure. You responded to them eventually, sometimes just a “thanks” with a heart emoji or an “lol right?” But you did tell him you’d let him know when your schedule got better.
“Hoping by Sunday,” you wrote.
“See?” Tommy said Friday afternoon as Joel stared at his phone when on a break yet again. “That’s a timeline. If she really wasn’t interested she wouldn’t be just sharing that. So get out of your head, alright?”
“Been more than a week,” Joel frowned before he sighed. “You have shit like this with Maria?”
“She’s a district attorney man,” he laughed. “Work comes first an awful lot. S’OK. She comes home to me at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. You’ll get there.
“Speaking of my wife,” he continued. “Did you know what Sunday is?”
“No,” Joel frowned.
“Our anniversary,” he said. “Officially made it a year!”
“Good for you,” Joel replied, trying to be happy for Tommy and not think about what he’d do to still be with you in a year.
“Yeah, it is,” Tommy nodded. “Which is why… I could use your help.”
Joel sighed.
“With what?”
Tommy smiled.
“I can’t believe you forgot your anniversary until two days before,” Joel muttered that evening as he walked through the mall with Tommy. “Don’t you have a fuckin’ phone reminder or something?”
“Well I do now,” he scoffed. “So next year I’ll have some warning. Jewelry’s a good option, right?”
“Isn’t there that shit you’re supposed to get for each other based on what anniversary it is?” Joel asked, remembering back to decades before when he’d tried and failed to make shit work with Sarah’s mom.
“Oh shit, I think you’re right,” Tommy said, getting his phone out and typing something in before nodding. “Right, right, paper… the fuck do you get that’s paper?”
Joel laughed a little.
“Could get her a nice notebook,” he said. “Stationary maybe…”
His voice trailed off as he looked across the mall, over the gap between the walkways that opened to the level below.
You were there.
It looked like you’d probably just come from work, in jeans and heels and a blazer, your hair and makeup done. But that wasn’t what caught his attention.
No, it was he man walking next to you, about a head taller than you, an arm over your shoulders pulling you to his side.
Joel couldn’t help but stare, couldn’t take his eyes away from it. Like it was a fucking train wreck, the carnage inevitable and clear and he couldn’t avoid taking it all in.
The man looked to be about Joel’s age, maybe a few years older but probably in that age range you’d mentioned the time you’d talked about the dating apps.
“Joel?” Tommy asked, looking where he was for a moment before noticing you, too. “Oh fuck… Shit, I… I’m sorry man I don’t…”
The man kissed your temple just before the two of you turned to go down the next wing of the mall, a bag dangling from his hand.
Joel’s chest felt tight.
“S’fine,” Joel said, turning and walking back in the direction they’d been going originally, putting some distance between you and him. “Not like we were anything official…”
“Still,” Tommy said, falling into step beside him, looking genuinely sorry. “Shit. Look, I can finish this on my own…”
Joel scoffed.
“Not gonna let you fuck up your first anniversary,” Joel said, trying not to think of that man kissing you other places, all the places you let Joel kiss you. “Let’s just… find her a good notebook or something and get out of here.”
You said you’d deleted your dating apps.
Said you weren’t fucking anyone but him.
That work was too busy to see him in almost a week but that you’d see him maybe Sunday.
Were you dating someone from Seattle who’d come to town to visit? Had Joel just been a way for you to keep busy while you and that fucking guy were long distance? Had you found someone here who could give you more than he could? Shit like nice dinners every date instead of fucking pizza places? Trips to the mall where he bought you nice things? Had you never thought about him the way he thought about you? Had you ever even considered things with him that he ached for with you?
He couldn’t make sense of it. Not when Tommy found a notebook that could get stamped with Maria’s initials, not when driving himself home in a daze, not when sitting at his kitchen table with a glass of whiskey in his hand.
It didn’t feel right, none of it felt right. It didn’t feel like something you’d do. But it was you he’d seen, he was positive of that. Not like you had a twin sister wandering around. You’d told him that you had no family but, truthfully, you didn’t need to. Sarah had mentioned it, the first Thanksgiving she knew you, when she talked about going to a restaurant with you for dinner that night.
“She’s not goin’ home to her family either?” He’d asked her the night before.
“Nah,” she said. “She doesn’t have any. No siblings, her parents died years ago apparently. Said she always does the restaurant thing for holidays and it does sound kinda fun…”
“That’s too bad,” Joel’d said. “About her family.”
“Yeah,” Sarah sighed. “But she seems pretty OK with it. And sometimes the best family is the one you find, right? I wouldn’t mind a bigger family.”
Joel had smiled at that, his big hearted daughter latching onto you that way.
“Me either, baby girl.”
So it had to have been you that he saw. You, with another man. His arm around you. His lips on your temple. His company you wanted to keep.
You could have at least fucking called. Texted. Had the courtesy of telling him you were done with him.
Which seemed like something you would do. You didn’t seem like the kind of person who would just vanish, who would pull away and blow him off until he gave up. You were the kind of person who would fucking talk to him. He knew it. He was sure of that.
So why hadn’t you?
“Fuck it,” he muttered, tipsy off whiskey. He set an alarm for the morning. He’d just go by your place. He’d talk to you. If you ended it, fine. Then he’d know. He could stop stressing over this shit, stop worrying about the heartbreak and actually live through it and then move on.
But he hoped he was wrong. There had to be an explanation. There just… there had to be.
He drove straight to your apartment in the morning, his mind still going through every possibility, trying to come up with some explanation. He didn’t send his usual good morning text.
Joel’s stomach got tight as he got closer and closer to your place. He had to fight the urge to just turn around and go back to his house, to pretend like he’d never seen what he saw at the mall, just hope you’d actually text him to hang out again eventually and act like he hadn’t seen or heard any of it.
But could he live his life that way? Build a relationship of any kind with you on a lie?
He didn’t think he could.
There was no car in your space when he got to your building, something that made his heart sink. It hadn’t occurred to him that you might spend the night at the other man’s house. His stomach twisted.
But he saw the door to your unit open and he was almost relieved until he realized who was walking out.
It was the man from the mall.
Joel got a better look at him now and he had to be a few years older than Joel, his hair almost entirely gray. But Joel thought he was wearing something different than he’d worn yesterday and he wasn’t sure if that was good or bad. The man got in an Uber and, before Joel could think better of it, he was out of his car, heading for your front door.
He rang the bell before he chickened out and he heard you inside before he saw you.
“I swear to God if you forgot something you’re not coming back in…” your voice broke off, eyes wide, when you opened the door.
“Joel,” you whispered. You were in one of those fucking not-quite-sweatsuit sets Joel loved. He hated that the other man got to see you this way. “What are you…”
“Can I come in?” He cut you off, fighting to keep his voice calm. You nodded. “Think we need to talk.”
