6JUN44 There is no equal to what these men and women did. The greatest by far and it’s not even close. Show the younger generation what sacrifice is and how to be hard. My favorite meeting of a WW2 vet (and the best to show others the above point) happened around 2000. The vet was a neighbor of me and my shooting partner. This vet drank natty light on a stringer every sunny day in his driveway with his lap dog. One day we decided to stop and hang with this old timer. When we exited the car he pulled two off the stringer before saying hello. He asked if we were in the service and if we were “legs” (non jumped qualified). We assured him that not only we were not “legs” we both had 500 plus free falls at the time, most combat equipment and on NODs with some at 20, 25, 30 and 35k feet. This #VeteransDay, I'm remembering and honoring my U.S. Naval Veteran mother, Yvonne Louise Russell, (1920 - 1990.) She enlisted three months before Pearl Harbor, serving in Fleet Post Office at Charleston, Norfolk, Parris Island and San Francisco. When the #Pentagon opened in 1948, she was one of the first female NCOs detailed there, somewhere in "D" Ring. She went on to have a successful career in #informationscience with Remington-RAND Corporation in New York, and as an educator, supporting us after my father passed. She was an exemplary and faithful #Catholic #Christian her entire life. Today, 78 years ago, more than Fifty Five Thousand American men aged 18-25 put the blank check that they signed ( ... up to, and including one's life ... ) on the table and poured out of Six Thousand Nine Hundred and Thirty Nine ships and landing crafts and onto the beaches of France, straight into withering machine gun fire and certain death. Another Twenty Thousand Airborne troops rained down from Two Thousand Three Hundred Ninety Five aircraft (AIRBORNE!), and Eight Hundred Sixty Seven gliders also delivered men to the fight. In all, Two Million Eight Hundred Seventy Six Thousand Four Hundred Thirty Nine troopers focused on one single effort - to protect America, it's ideals, and the rest of the world. Think about what you accomplished and can say about that time of your life from 18-25 years of age. What have you done to make someone else's life better? It's never too late. Not until that second after you draw your last breath. And taking the example of these amazing men and women, maybe even far after... Are you an American worth fighting for? Are you a human worth dying for? Every day is a new chance to change it all. Start now. You might even measure up to the giants of the greatest generation. It’s such an honor to sometimes just sit down with a WW2, Vietnam,Korean War Veteran and spend some time just chatting. And then realize this dude is a real life Chuck Norris and Rambo combined. And most of the time they don’t want to to talk about the war but the brothers and sisters they now miss. I finally made it to the beaches of Normandy France this week for 2 days to honor my fellow brothers in arms of the Greatest Generation of all time. It was surreal. These 18 year old kids liberated Europe from Nazi Germany. WWII uncovered: Petty Officer Third Class Fred Gwynne of the US Navy: Veteran of The Battle of Saipan and the Battle of Tinian
Frederick Hubbard Gwynne was born in New York City on July 10, 1926. Fred enlisted in the US Navy and in 1944 he served as a Radioman Third Class on a submarine chaser in the Pacific Theater. A veteran of both the Battle of Saipan and the Battle of Tinian, Gwynne was honorably discharged in 1948 with the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.
According to the Veterans Administration: "After the war, Fred attended Harvard University. An aspiring painter, Gwynne drew cartoons for the “The Harvard Lampoon,” and later became president of the publication. Upon graduation in 1951, he returned to New York and worked several jobs, such as creating commercial artwork and copywriting at the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency. Gwynne’s first big break came in 1961 when he was cast in the role of police officer Francis Muldoon on the comedy series “Car 54, Where Are You?” The show aired until 1963; the following year, he was cast as Herman Munster in the popular syndication favorite “The Munsters.”
A regular on Broadway - Fred was cast as Big Daddy in the 1974 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". His final on-screen role was that of Judge Chamberlain Haller in the 1992 film “My Cousin Vinny,” the end of an acting career that spanned 42 years." - VA News October 13, 2022.
Petty Officer Third Class Fred Gwynne passed away on July 2, 1993 at the age of 66 years old. He lies in rest at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery in Finksburg, Maryland. Lest We Forget.

*** Medal of Honor Monday: Richard Sorenson 🇺🇸🇺🇸 ***
"Sorenson spent five months in a Hawaii hospital, then more time in a Seattle hospital. He underwent six surgeries before receiving the Medal of Honor. The whole hospital turned out for the event.
Like so many Medal recipients, he was humble and didn’t seem to think that he’d done anything special.
'Well, somebody had to do it,' he shrugged. 'And it just happened to be me.'"
