Her family had not had a firebender in it for so long they forgot it was in their genetics.

Hanabi was taken from her home when her mother freaked out about learning she could firebend. Her mother had ended up telling someone that ratted them out and was killed to shut her up but Hanabi's elder sister and father were away so they lived.

She was dragged before the firelord as they believed that maybe she was secretly the avatar as there hadn’t been any firebenders in her birth place for so long.

She was put in the dungeon for a while and tortured a bit before essentially being told that she would act as the prince and princesses playmate if she knew what was good for her (it was mostly caging her to the palace as they had learned she could do something interesting when they were torturing her).

Obviously Azula likes terrorizing her, though Hanabi is less scared of her after the torture, but Zuko is kind to her especially once he learns the turtleducks love her.

I think hanabi might've been more interesting if she was a wee bit more like azula. Like they've a lot of similarities. Younger but favoured child, heir to a violent system, has an older sibling considered too weak/unskilled/gentle by their father etc etc. She just seems to get on really well with hinata considering they've been pit against each other their entire childhoods.

I just had the idea that Tui and La had turned Azula human again the moment she was pulled into the water and then released again by them.

"What happened to Hanabi-"

"I don't know!" The panic in Aang's voice was obvious. "La can't have just taken her... can they? I hope not..."

As Sokka watched, the spirit oasis rippled violently, flashes of white and blue rising from its surface. He wondered if their firebending cat was somehow fighting the ocean spirit - it had been unfair that she had been dragged into the water with Zhao. But what La-

A figure was visible in the pool - the water surged upward, depositing them on the grass with a loud sloshing noise. It receded just as quickly, leaving the stranger wobbling on her feet, staring at all of them with wide eyes.

Wide golden eyes, as visible in the moonlight as Hanabi's had been - and as she stood, the girl breathed, a twist of blue flame coming out of her mouth as the water on her clothes began to steam. Again she looked at them, and Sokka was struck by just how Fire Nation she looked-

How does Catzula and Zuko react to seeing each other after the Day of Black Sun? Does Zuko feel betrayed to see his cat joined the enemy side or does he feel relieved that she's okay? When he asks to join Team Avatar does Azula try to make it seenable that she likt him to convince the rest of the team to let him join?

Shisa had disappeared over half a year ago in the wake of the turmoil with the Avatar and that attempt to take the kid captive on his ship. Since then life had been....complicated. Ba Sing Se freed of Dai Li tyranny, and the improbable glimpses of his cat with the Avatar. He had spent a long time thinking when Shisa fell overboard that she'd drowned, and Uncle had taken it much harder than he did.

It was Uncle, not him, who went to Shisa first with a very apologetic look on his face as the cat looked at him with that kind of snooty manner cats could and yet an entirely human kind of disbelief. Especially when he extended his hand to her and quietly told her, kneeling down so his height-weight difference was far less, that he was sorry he hadn't caught her.

Iroh treated her almost like a person (not so long from now Zuko would find that thought to be a revolving door of emotions but....). Zuko just stared.

"You look like you've seen a ghost." He would have liked in later years to say he was dignified when the Avatar seemed to pop up behind him and surprised him. In reality he yelped and a few sparks of fire left his mouth.

"That's my cat," he said with a suspicious tone of voice. "What is Shisa doing with you?"

Aang looked over at the cat that took a few steps toward Iroh's hand and then nuzzled it quietly as Iroh closed his eyes and took a deep breath and quietly whispered where only Aang's wind-boosted hearing could register it "You give me more than I deserve. I will seek to prove myself worthy of it."

Aang blinked and then his eyes narrowed and went wide but he shrugged. He'd ask the old man about it later. For now......

"Hanabi?" He shrugged lightly. "Found her in the ocean about seven months ago and she's been with us since." He had a fond smile on his face. "Made our adventures a lot nicer, too."

He saw the way Zuko looked at the cat and then scratched his head. "I missed her," is what Zuko said. The two girls behind him were very quiet and very confused, Ty Lee mouthing to Mai 'all this over a cat?' (Ty Lee too would find this reaction hilarious in the worst way in just a few weeks' time).

When Hanabi turned her gaze she saw Zuko and then there was a moment of tension. Team Avatar looked from the cat to Zuko and back again and then she mewed and did a single slow blink. Sokka's nose twitched.

"Hanabi likes you," he said suspiciously.

He nodded.

"Well she was my cat first."

Sokka pursed his lips for a moment.

"Hanabi does have good judgment," he said reluctantly.

i’m trying to write my interpretation and analysis of what hinata hyuuga’s relationship with hiashi post-war would be like if i wasn’t a misogynist and watered down my female cast to forgiving “good girl”.

in the middle of research and drafting and reading other child abuse meta from other anime fandom. in particular, bnha- she parallels with touya/dabi and hanabi parallels with azula (crave and ultimately receive father’s approval and affection).

it’s dragging my ass and as a humble, young writer, i’m trying to add as much depth and nuance and realism as i can. would appreciate if you have any resource to write abuse!

if you're looking for realism I'd advise looking up research papers and the like about child abuse victims and the like.

If Kishimoto paid enough attention to his female characters to develop them, Hinata and Hanabi would have had a Zuko-Azula/Adaine-Aelwyn dynamic, and I still can't tell if I'm relieved or disappointed that it didn't actually go down that way.

Like, I'm just saying- the set up was there. We have the outcast whose initial lack of skill in the techniques her family prizes has made her father decide she's not worth his interest. She's cast aside in favor of a talented sibling. As the story progresses, she grows physically/emotionally stronger, supported by people who care about HER instead of what she can offer them, and becomes who she was meant to be with no input from her family.

Meanwhile, on the other side, we have the prodigy whose skill in The Family Techniques have made her their father's favorite. She is constantly trying to ensure she keeps meeting his very high standards, because it has been frighteningly clear since day one that his affection is conditional. The outcast is used as a scary story of what could happen if you disappoint him- but you'd never do that, would you?

This pattern has shown up in so many different stories, and if Hinata and Hanabi had been the Hyuuga brothers or the series was done by someone who actually wanted to explore trauma in their girl characters, I am convinced we would've gotten a Last Agni Kai or Adaine's Furious Fist moment. Something where the children raised all their lives to resent each other come to a head and either fight it out or forgive each other and round on the person who did this to them.

Which would have been deeply satisfying narratively, but not everybody has Naruto's Talk No Jutsu, and if the girls ended up going the first route I'd've been emotionally devastated.

Tbh Hanabi is the biggest enigma to me because literally the only action we saw out of her the entire series was her whooping Hinata when they were like toddlers and nothing else? Like iirc I don't think she even showed a single emotion the whole time? I remember she was there during the chuunin exam arc just... Watching. Like Hanabi Hyuga could have been anybody. The Last had to completely reinvent her to have her as an actual character lmao

i remember the thing during the chuunin exams where she was like, cheering for hinata and then the konoha crush happened and all the hyuugas were swarming her and trying to get her out because she was the heiress and she was like “oh no i hope hinata’s okay!!” and then she gets swept off to some like, hyuuga bunker or whatever

i think that because she was a blank slate, it would’ve been cool to use her as like... a look at what the hyuuga clan is like from the inside. like have her be very cold and kind of spoiled / entitled and a little ruthless and machiavellian

because hinata and neji are both hyuuga but they’re both like... outsiders, y’know? like neji is second house and hinata is considered weak and a disappointment to her bloodline, and hanabi, who’s hiashi’s favorite and the heiress, could’ve been more of a look at what the hyuuga turn their children into. 

hinata and hanabi could’ve almost had almost like, a less angry azula/zuko dynamic where one of them is the spoiled favorite and the other is the black sheep who comes to resent their father and the injustices of their house, and then had the two of them eventually come together and reconcile 

that would’ve required kishi to give actual attention and development to two female characters without sexualizing them or having any male love interests involved though lkjhgfd
