Welcome to the Layton NPC Showdown!
This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.
GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.
WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.
WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.
WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.
WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔
WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.
WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)
WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.
WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)
ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.
US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.
And now for a list of the entries! I didn't check all of these for inconsistencies, but I attempted to ascertain that I used the US versions. Some of them might be UK versions though because that's the version of the game I have (specifically Diabolical Box NPCs and Last Specter NPCs -- I know some of their US names but not all).

Disney Month:The Love Bug 1997
For the 17th installment in Disney month we shall look at the TV movie reboot/sequel to the classic Herbie franchise ,The Love Bug
In this 1997 TV movie Herbie,a living Volkswagon Beetle finds himself with Hank Cooper(Bruce Campbell ) a mechanic and former race driver with his own insecrurities and a bit of jealously over all the attention the car gets, ignoring is oddball artist friend Roddy Martel(Kevin J O Connor) telling him the car is alive ,meanwhile a former owner of Herbie, the pompus race car driver Simon Moore III (John Hannah ) makes contact with Herbies creator Dr. Gustav Stumpfel (Harold Gould ) to make his own living car ,the feral Horace
The Herbie series, which follows the adventures of this living car ,was iconic back in the day,one of Disneys few big franchises (Which I know sounds insane now ,considering the MCU...Which this has a connection to.....I'll get to that ),though now is seen as a curiosity ,a forgotten relic of a bygone time,or just dismissed as stupid.I will confess I am not a Herbie expert ,I have only seen three films (This one,the original Love Bug ,and Herbie Fully Loaded ) but I am a Herbie defender,I actually think the premise is cute despite having a disdain for cars . I think the original Love Bug is a classic and while my memories are hazy ,I enjoyed Fully Loaded as a kid .But What are my thoughts on this film.....Honestly I really enjoyed it
Now I have seen some lukewarm thoughts on this film dismissing it as only noteworthy cause the lead is Bruce Campbell and if you know me well you might be scoffing and saying "Oh they only like it cause they like Bruce Campbell"....I cant lie and say thats NOT a factor, because it is.I am a Bruce Campbell fanatic ,I adore Evil Dead, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr ,Bubba Ho Tep ,Man With The Screaming Brain ,My Name is Bruce ,his performances in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ,Maniac Cop ,Black Friday ,Lois and Clark ,his cameos in Sam Raimis Spiderman franchise ,I could keep going .Point is he is one of my favorite actors, having old school movie star charisma /good looks, a character actors sensibilities and expert comedic slapstick timing on par with the old masters like Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd .I am a fan and as a fan it is fun to see him get to be in a goofy Disney comedy as opposed to usual horror fare he is well known ,but not just in a "Tee hee aint it wacky to see Ash talk to Herbie " way,I think he is a legit good choice for the lead, cause he is charmy, got his trademark snark ,but can do the vulnerability and make you believe that he cares for this car ,cause of course he can , this guy fought his HAND in a movie ,he can definately make me belive he has a friendship with a living car .So yeah it is a factor ,but its because he is such a good actor I think he is an asset......But I dont think he is the only asset
So I kind of find it baffeling people looked at this and dismissed it because it has so many THINGS that make it stand out....Including the fact the director is Peyton Reed, who has gone on to direct THE ANT MAN trilogy ,and he kind of brings the same sensibility he brought to Ant Man to this ,which I can only describe as lovingly silly. Like the movie knows its audience will find it silly ,and while it acknowledges it ,it loves it and embraces it .It pokes fun at some cliches but it also embraces some, and because some things are played sincere, they also are really funny
The cast is great ,not just Campbell ,as the film is full of character actors .We get some fun small parts from Burton Gilliam and Jeff Garlin ,and highly enjoyable supporting performances by Clerance Williams III ,Harolg Gould ,Dana Gould , and Micky Dolenz .Alexandra Wentworth is a good love tinterest, playing with some tropes ,and John Hannah is a very entertaining weasily pompous villain .My favorite character is Roddy played by Kevin J O Connor who is this artist who is able to communicate with Herbie ,being very lovable as wel as very funny .Also Dean Jones, star of the original film reprises his role of Jim Douglas ,and even though he isnt in the film alot its fun to see him here
I adore Horace the evil car ,I like that he is an extention of Simons evil and is a feral monster ,but has a connection with Simon .I think the production team did a really good job giving menace to this car
My only complaint is it feels like Herbie himself gets sidelined ,but the film still works.
Overall, this is such a fun underrated gem and not a bad intro to Herbie, though personally I think ones should watch the original film first

Have you seen the fear street movies? If so. Thoughts? Horror lesbians>>>>>>
YES AND I LOVE THE FEAR STREET MOVIES SO SO MUCH THANK YOU FOR ASKING!!!!
i literally can't bring myself to be normal about them. you asked for my thoughts though. these movies are just so special to me they are so good. they are so much fun but there's so much to say about them!! there's THREE OF THEM for starters. i watched the first one because i loved kiana madeira in trinkets and also maya hawke is there!!! and i love it so much, i paused right before the ending because i didn't want to accept that it wasn't a happy ending, and i tried to be chill when watching the second one. but the last week, for 1666, i literally woke up at 3am to watch it immediately as it came out because i was losing my mind about these movies. for starters, sam and deena, absolutely iconic. is there anything better than a grumpy lesbian who's lost all hope in things getting better and won't drive 30 minutes for her girlfriend but as soon as sam's life is in danger she literally defeats a 300 years old curse and effectively makes life better for herself, sam, the entire town?? sam being adorable and repeatedly sacrificing herself for the people around her and literally trusting deena enough to be killed by her. josh being so wholesome so smart!! kate and simon best secondary characters to ever characters. yes kate's death is the best thing ever, no i won't accept the fact that they're death. just like alice and cindy! those lesbians are alive and married!!! they! were! in! love!! and of course sadie sink as ziggy berman absolutely iconic, no i won't acknowledge the asshole guy, i hate that guy with a burning passion. and it's been more than a year but i STILL haven't recovered fromt he 1666 storyline. holy hannah miller my beloved. i didn't think the full trilogy was going to be about lesbian love defeating evil but here we are!!!!!! they did everything right and i won't accept any criticism!!!!!

The He-Man Effect: How American Toymakers Sold You Your Childhood GN - Box Brown
Brian "Box" Brown brings history and culture to life through his comics. In his next graphic novel, he unravels how marketing that targeted children in the 1980s has shaped adults in the present. Powered by the advent of television and super-charged by the deregulation era of the 1980s, media companies and toy manufacturers joined forces to dominate the psyches of American children. But what are the consequences when a developing brain is saturated with the same kind of marketing bombardment found in Red Scare propaganda? In The He-Man Effect, Brown shows us how corporate manipulation brought muscular, accessory-stuffed action figures to dizzying heights, bringing beloved brands like He-Man, Transformers, My Little Pony, and even Mickey Mouse himself into the spotlight.
Nemesis Reloaded TP - Mark Millar & Jorge Jimenez
The world's most evil comic book character is back! Who is Nemesis, and why does this eccentric billionaire who dresses up in a mask and cape want to terrorize people instead of helping them? Isn't that how this is supposed to go? Trigger warning: Too violent and just too cool for some! Don't say we didn't warn you.
Ninja Funk Vol 1 TP - JPG, Steve Schuitt & Alex Riegel

In a fun, high stakes adventure weaved together with downloadable face-melting beats, Ninja Funk follows a ragtag band of misfits as they attempt to save a universe that's off-key.
Occulted GN - Amy Rose, Ryan Estrada & Jeongmin Lee
When the Hale-Bopp soared across the sky in 1997, Amy Rose thought it was the start of an amazing new future. Instead, it brought news of a horrible tragedy at the Heaven's Gate compound just down the road. Amy had always known there was something off about the community she grew up in. She had been forbidden from going to school, or visiting the library because the leader told her that there was no use learning about a world that was about to end. But it was not until the news of the deaths at Heaven's Gate invaded the temple walls that she heard a new word that explained everything: cult. She must risk everything to indulge in secret trips to an abandoned, off-limits library that teaches her everything she was not meant to know. That Gandhi was not a space alien. That Star Trek wasn't real. That her community was built on a lie. And most importantly, the banned books give her all the information that she needs to escape.
Pea, Bee & Jay: The Big Bully GN - Brian "Smitty" Smith
The three besties are searching for treasure when a great big pumpkin storms over and bullies Jay into giving up his very shiny pebble-not cool, Pumpkin. But when they band together to prove that being big doesn't mean you get to push others around, the trio discovers that Pumpkin's got some extra-large issues of her own. Can Pea, Bee, & Jay get to the real root of the problem and bring the farm back to solid ground?
Sirens Of The City #1 (of 6) - Joanne Starer & Khary Randolph
New York City. 1980s. Runaway teen Layla struggles to survive on the mean streets, far from home.
But now every supernatural creature from the darkest corners of the urban grime is after Layla... and the child-to-be she never wanted growing inside her....
This gritty urban fantasy created by Joanne Starer (The Gimmick) and Excellence's Khary Randolph shines a light on bodily autonomy in a patriarchal world.
Sort Of Super Vol 1 TP - Eric Gapstur
Wyatt and his sister Adeline are determined to investigate an extinct volcano hundreds of miles from home that Adeline believes to be related to their mother's mysterious disappearance. At first it seems like an impossible mission until they realize there's a summer camp conveniently situated near the base of the volcano. So it's off to summer camp for Wyatt, Adeline, and their buddies Beto and Nara. But when they get there, they find it impossible to sneak away from the heavily chaperoned grounds. Opportunity presents itself by way of the Magma Cup, the camp's tournament-style series of mental and physical competitions where the finalists compete in an overnight-and less chaperoned-scavenger hunt on the volcano itself!

Channel 4 Idents from Optical Arts on Vimeo.
Optical Arts worked with 4creative and Art Practice to direct and create five new idents for Channel 4, following their new masterbrand launch.
The idents consist of 25 unique looping scenes, designed to reflect what life is like in the UK today – through the eyes of 17 creatives, artists, and filmmakers. Each scene was developed from an open brief which invited each creator to interpret one of five themes: Identity (who we are), The Land (where we live), System (what controls us), Release (how we escape) and Love (all that really matters), with the idents being divided up into 5 sets of 5 films, each with its own distinct style and voice.
Our work is included alongside that of a diverse range of hugely talented directors, creating a unique and ambitious project, portraying a snapshot of Britain today.
Two of our scenes highlight some of the dark realities that technical advancement brings - widespread digital observation, and machine control. Whilst the other two address more human themes - the effect of serotonin on the brain and the experience of a broken heart.
We are thrilled to see our work within these idents as part of this epic and memorable project. Channel 4 have made some of the most iconic idents in TV history, and we are delighted to play a small part in continuing that legacy with this work.
Optical Arts directed and created 4 scenes: Shattering Room, Chemicals, Robotic Fulfilment Centre and Digital Tracking. Dinner Party was directed by Dan Tobin Smith, the studio’s founder.

BOOMERANG SHOWS SERIES
The findings support the hypothesis that Australia's First Nations peoples regularly used hardwood boomerangs for retouching purposes. "While our results for the first time scientifically quantify the multipurpose nature of daily tools like boomerangs, this is something that Aboriginal people have known from a very long time," Martellotta adds. Our results are the first scientific proof of the multipurpose nature of these iconic objects." "Traditionally handcrafted experimental replicas of boomerangs proved very functional to shape stone tools. "In our article, we put together traditional knowledge and experimental archaeology to investigate a forgotten use of boomerangs: modifying the edges of stone tools," says archaeologist Eva Francesca Martellotta from Griffith University in Australia. Although its over and its not the same anymore going back and watching all of these shows, we will never forget them because they helped us so much throughout the early stages of life/].Researchers previously suspected these markings were the product of wood tapping against stone or bone, and the new experiments show that is very much a possibility. Roku Channel Store Description: Boomerang Cartoons are Retro & Vintage Cartoons, Classic Cartoons for the family and children to enjoy. It was about two genius brothers who made crazy things happen. BOOMERANG SHOWS SERIES
Special thanks to Nickandmore, whose 'List of series aired on. Please note that the list is currently a work in progress, and will continue to be improved overtime. The list includes each show's premiere date (or earliest known airdate), as well as their final airing (or last known airdate) on the network. “PBS kids shows made me feel so cool growing up.” -Luke Weston a Sophomore at Davis high exclaimed.īut lets not forget about the most relevant and liked kids channel of them all, Cartoon Network. The following is a list of shows that have aired since Boomerang's inception in 2000. Never the less this show was straight gas. Cyberchase, was about a group of kids that were brought into the digital universe by a hacker and they have to figure out ways to destroy him. Another groovy show on PBS kids was Cyberchase. Host Ryan Rogers brings a sharp wit and some talented friends to the Boomerang Comedy Theater stage. This show was aired on PBS kids and every kid in that grew up in the 2000’s watched this show, along with Martha Speaks, and Ruff Ruffs Playhouse. “Scooby Doo was GASSSS, i remember watching it and being scared”- Dakota Kempthorne a junior at Davis.Īnother Popular Show was Arthur, It was about animals portrayed as humans and Arthur’s everyday problems. As a kid it was thrilling to watch and just an overall super wholesome show. Scooby Doo was a show about a dog and his owner, who had a group of friends who liked to solve mysteries. Boomerangs shows included Tom and Jerry, Looney Toons, and the best kids show of all time in my opinion, What’s New Scooby Doo. A lot of the channels that most 2002-2004 kids watched included Boomerang, PBS kids, Cartoon network, Nickelodeon, and Of course, Disney channel and Disney XD.īoomerang was probably the most iconic channel for kids growing up in the 2000s. Whether these shows were good or bad didn’t really matter because we loved them anyways. There are a lot of shows we watched as kids that we have forgotten about. Growing up, watching television was a key component in our childhood.
