Ooh, your pup looks a lot like my own! And similarly, I also don't know exactly what she is, either, lol. But if I had to take a guess at this fella, I'd guess some kind of hound/herding mix. Assuming you're from the US, American English Foxhound, or a closely-related breed, is likely somewhere in there (not a common breed to be kennel-club registered, but I get the sense there's a lot of them and their mixes running around unregistered, since they're such common farm and hunting dogs). Perhaps also some Border Collie, judging by the ears and the way the fur ruffs up around his neck.
Regardless of his breed, though, he gets an unofficial official Tumblr Kennel Club registration of Good Boy from me!

Hiro (2023)
A colorful pet portrait of a handsome tricolor Australian Shepherd dog named Hiro in bright rainbow colors. The scanner made the blues and purples much lighter than they are in the actual painting, and the oranges darker, for some reason. Acrylic painting on 12x16 canvas, finished July 5, 2023.

Today’s breed is the Bergamasco Sheepdog. This dog is a member of the FCI’s Sheepdog and Cattle Dog group and has been since the 1950’s. They originate from the area of Bergamo, Italy, in the Italian alps. Bred to herd cows, every element of the breed standard works to help them thrive in their environment.
Tumblr media
A medium sized dog, they average around 60cm at the withers and weigh around 35kg. Their fur is thick and curly and often forms matted locs over their backs to help protect them from bad weather.
Tumblr media
The breed first appeared in the late 1800’s in Italy, although it has never been a particularly frequent breed. It nearly went extinct after World War 2, it was however rescued, mainly through the efforts of Italian scientist and breeder Dr. Maria Andreoli and her kennel, Dell’ Albera. She unfortunately passed in 2005, but thanks to her lifelong efforts, this breed continues to thrive all around the world.

I’m including a link to the international club of Bergamasco Sheepdogs, from where these photos as well as some of this information originate.

Harper (RIP little old lady) didn’t really have a clear breed. She’s the size of a typical housecat. We believe she was mostly a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix, but she jumped like a Jack Russell Terrier and the way she held her paw up when focusing on something is characteristic of the Beagle. So we think she also has a little of those two breeds.
But the biggest mystery of all was on the back of her neck. She had this ridge of fur typically only seen on the Rhodesian Ridgeback, and she was far too small for us to believe that’s in her mix.

Are we on the money or do you think we may be off?
(Fun fact: During her middle-aged years, she had sculpted muscles. You can kind of see it in the fourth photo, but it was more apparent on her back and back legs when she put her paws up on the car window on the way to the park.)
What a funny little lady you had there! I would also guess Chihuahua or maybe Rat Terrier in there, but I almost wonder if she's got some Corgi in her instead of Dachshund as the source of those short little legs. Breeding a very short-coated dog to a medium/long-coated dog can sometimes lead to hair sticking up in odd places or patterns, and her face and head and neck looks a little more Corgi-ish to me instead of Dachshund. Doxies generally have narrower, longer heads with not so defined a stop, and less loose skin around their necks; then again, with a melting pot mutt mix it's never easy to tell, so I could be wrong. Maybe she did have like 1.4% Rhodesian Ridgeback in her, who knows--it's certainly possible for the smaller breeds in the mix to mask that sort of size. Ultimately, guessing breeds in mixes is always going to be an inexact science.
Regardless, she seems to have been a wonderful little lady, and gets an unofficial official AKC Certification of Good Girl from me 👍 I'm glad you had such a wonderful pup light up your life for the time she was with you. May her memory continue to bring you joy. ❤️
