(They say that praying to be loved is a sin.
It has such a sweet scent.)
▪────  ⚔  ────▪
Shadows and light: two opposing forces.
Such was the idea behind the Pale King's ultimate weapon. When all else failed in subduing the Radiance’s rampage, weapons of Soul ineffective and healing properties of lifeblood useless, he turned to the darkness that slept beneath for aid.
Shadows and light: one meant to subdue another.
The shell of a child desecrated by the choking twilight listened to his every command. The only light it would ever follow was his, as was the only light that it could not overpower. He trained it to perfection, eradicating every flaw of its mortal design and preparing it for its eternal vigil.
When the day of the Sealing came, he was certain his plan would work. The vessel marched on with even, steady steps, its empty gaze cast forward; in his wake were left joyful Hallownestians, their reverent whispers rising as wisps of silver luminescence to tail him like a second cloak.
Shadows: bringing the kingdom much-needed shelter from the light.
If you weren’t there on the day that heralded Hallownest’s salvation, you would not know of the battle raging just outside of view. Life went on as though no plague had ever bathed the narrow caverns in haemolymph and rot, as though no smell of decay had ever wafted off bloated corpses strewn across the capitol’s streets.
But light would not surrender to the suffocating shadows so easily.
Within the pitch dark temple, beyond the offerings left on the threshold glimmering with Soul, two enemies as old as the world itself clashed once more. Their blades crossed, each wound, each victory and each loss quaked through the voided vessel’s shell that hung limp in its chains, eyes bored into the black egg’s inner wall forevermore.
And slowly, ever so slowly, the first flickers of lurid orange clawed their way into the fathomless darkness of the Hollow Knight’s gaze.
Shadows and light: unable to co-exist.
From the outside, the strenuous war was not visible, lest we count the first pustules full of scorching rot that sprouted from the vessel’s chest. But on the inside...
Its mind, the one it was not meant to possess, was flooded with the dawn’s whispers. The light wove its lies through the shadow in golden thread, unravelling streaks of silver and black alike. Frayed ends of collapsed lies stuck out, ugly and unseemly; the vessel’s trust in its King was giving out inch by painful inch.
Light: branded into shadows.
Why let yourself and your kingdom burn? the dawn asked over and over, when you can save everyone in truth?
And the vessel cracked under the unbearable weight of truth and rage. Golden ichor seeped out of the fissures left behind by the light’s onslaught, in its gaze the Old Light’s radiance and on its mask a fiery brand covering the Pale King’s spellwork. It would get back all that had been denied to it; it would get its revenge on the world that betrayed it.
Shadows: embracing the light.
The vessel let the dawn’s power course through it, the oppressive shroud of Void that had cornered the Old Light in a far-off corner of the Dream dissipating into nothing. All doubts thrown aside, it rose from the ashes of its former glory, shaking off the chains of deceit that had bound it for so long – and it incinerated the jailors holding it in the Temple.
If you didn’t know exactly what to look for, you would never notice the seals fizzling out like smoke from a fire. The morning following its treason came, and the denizens of Dirtmouth were no wiser as to the battle that came to a head mere hours ago.
From their eyes, though, surged golden luminosity.
Light: unbound, no longer held down by the choking shadows.
The infection spread like wildfire, in the Hollow Knight’s footsteps blooming twisted vines that carried disease within. Adorned with beautiful flowers, they invaded the shade of Hallownest’s caverns, and it was too late to do anything to stop the traitor’s descent.
Not that they didn’t try, of course.
Hallownest’s most powerful champions rose to defend the kingdom from the plague. But the vessel had been trained to perfection: it was infused with power beyond mortals’ understanding, prepared for an eternal war with the goddess of dreams.
Shadows: entwined with light.
The Hollow Knight brought down the kingdom’s greatest knights, its weapons infused with sunlight. It tore through chitin and flesh in primal, cold fury, its claws and mandibles tearing its former allies to shreds. Not even all their prowess combined was enough to resist two forces old as the world itself.
With the final obstacle gone from their path, the two gods stood before Hallownest’s crown jewel. The White Palace gleamed with familiar, though no longer welcoming silver; motes of Soul swirled around the Hollow Knight as it treaded paths of its former home. None was fool enough to stand in its way – none, except the Pale King himself.
Shadows and light: allied against a mutual enemy.
Soul and blackened Dream clashed in a violent battle. The Palace’s walls creaked and lamented the sacrilege taking place within, on them left sprays of Void, godly ichor and infection alike.
But even the King could not hold out against the joined forces of unknowable darkness and luminous dawn. The radiant vessel cornered him, though its shell was littered with wounds deep and shallow, though its mask wept black miasma and its arm held only by the virtue of the Old Light’s strength; it cornered him, and as he stared into his perfect creation’s eyes, he saw only the raging pyre of fury and contempt.
Gone was the love it had once carried, the Hollow Knight wanted so desperately to believe as it plunged its nail through the Pale King’s chest. Gone was the unfulfillable wish to prove itself that ate it alive, it convinced itself as chitin snapped and silver haemolymph pooled at the feet of Hallownest’s new ruler. Gone was the conflict that tore the kingdom apart, clawing its way free from Hallownest’s very heart.
Gone was the reason behind its suffering, and so its anguish should’ve been gone as well. But was it truly so?
Shadows and light: finally reaching a truce.
When the Hollow Knight embraced her, the only one that had ever understood and accepted it, it could almost believe that the price it had exacted for its needless pain was enough. In her light, the reassurance she extended to it soothed every ache, every doubt that it could ever have.
Sometimes, though, in the darkest corners of its mind – those that still held, if by the thinnest of threads keeping the tapestry of its mindscape from coming undone – a wail like that of a wounded animal resounded, no end and no beginning to the elegy for the life it had taken with its own hands.
Shadows and light: ancient enemies.
It wondered, on those days, if someone heard those cries, muffled as they were. If maybe, just maybe, someone would come to enact the final act of vengeance long overdue.
But then, the Radiance’s gentle glow shrouded its fractured mind as she extended the same mercy to it as to the entire kingdom, and those thoughts were no more.
Shadows and light: ruling side by side.
Until, inevitably, someone would try to take what was rightfully its once more.

To those of you following my Hallowed Rainforest AU, I’d like you to meet Pale Pebbles, the king of the Hallowed Rainforest.
As you might have guessed, his character is a combination of PK from HK and 5p from RW. Although our protagonists never canonically meet him while he’s alive, he still plays an important role in the AU’s story.
Tumblr media
Pale Pebbles is a higher being who initially arrived at the rainforest with his can from the eastern sea, alongside his sister Looks to the Rain (whom I will talk about another time.) This was back when the rainforest was still under the rule of the Radiant Light (not to be confused with the Spirit Tree).
After his arrival he worked in collaboration with the Spirit Tree to banish the Radiant Light and build a kingdom out of the rainforest, which he dubbed the Hallowed Rainforest. The inhabitants of the Rainforest were already living in a somewhat primitive society, but Pale Pebbles invented college granted them more complex, higher thought and society once he began to establish his kingdom.
As his kingdom grew, Pale Pebbles began experimenting with the void which came from the void sea deep below the Rainforest, in order to find a way for his people to escape the cycles. He created void constructs, such as the Kingsmoulds, and hunter-variants: more powerful, void-infused versions of existing creatures.
Of course, as we all know, eventually the infection began to threaten the kingdom, which causes Pale Pebbles to panic and make several poor choices, like throwing babies into the void sea and ignoring his sister. I’ll save the details of The Hollow Knight for another time.
The can is not pictured here, but think of it as PK’s giant wyrm corpse but mechanical. A giant, mobile mecha-wyrm super computer. Pale Pebbles has a palace, but the can is where he does most of his work, so he keeps it around and maintains it during his reign. His puppet (as seen above) can detach itself and travel outside the can, usually to make public appearances or visit the Spirit Tree.
Also, yeah he’s still married to a tree in this AU. But he didn’t have babies with the tree cause he’s a robot! Not biological babies anyway.

Hollow Knight AU Idea- Other side of the Mirror
okay, so, I like the drabbler I am, saw this post by @catanutella and suddenly I got an amazing, if awful AU idea :D
Let’s set up first.
For the Radiant Children to be born, I imagine a world where, for a certain reason, the Pale King and Radiance actually have to work together. Like, maybe there is a big bad cult, and because I like the subversion of everything in Hollow Knight, maybe it is against a god/goddess of Healing or ‘Purity’. The Radiance has been fighting against them for a long time, but she never seems to be anything but on the defense with them, their planing and power able to outmatch her own. At least, until the Pale King comes into being.
Now, the Pale King has seen the future, he can see the path that can branch if he picks one road or the other, and in the end, the cult has ideas and thoughts he can never agree with. He can see that he would never be able to take them on alone, so with the aid of Unn and the White Lady, he meets with the Radiance and with terms laid down, they all work together to defeat the enemy god. After all, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Once the other is cast out, things get a bit complicated... but they are eventually ironed out, if a bit tense at time with some relations. In the end, the Pale King is able to give minds to the bugs all around them, the Radiance is able to give them all dreams, but in the end, it is up to the bugs themselves to decide who they wish to follow in the end. Hollownest is built and most of the Moths still choose the Radiance, with some going over to the Pale King. This of course causes tension, but it was agreed to let the bugs choose, so there is that.
So yeah, this is the world that the Radiant Children are born into.
Now, i’m going to say this; I think Wyrms have very low birth rates, one of the reasons their species went extinct. The White Lady, being of earth and fertility in my headcannon, is able to still give him a lot of kids. (With no desperate plans and void to enter into the egg) they have a few children, I’m thinking between like 30-50.
So yeah, here is the set up for this idea; of course there will be drama, with fae like gods and court politics and all these still very morally grey characters still being themselves. (I want feral Child Hornet to be born, so maybe it was a term set down in the beginning to get Deepnest’s cooperation, the desire for a strong brood in the future or maybe one or two of the Radiant children gets saved by Herrah, who thinks ‘what about a life for a life? and boom, Hornet gets to exist and her mom won’t be a damn dreamer here.)
Now, here we get to where I want to be.
So, if we were in a comic or story, this would probably follow after a few arcs with subtle and not so subtle foreshadowing. The Cult is making a comeback, they are preparing, and now they are ready.
They have a special weapon with them this time, a mirror called the All-Seer’s Glass, said to show possibilities for what can be, as well as able to power up those who know how to use it. They also are able to somehow trick Grimm, making it to where the Nightmare King can only watch what is to happen, much to his distaste. (He does not care to be commanded or ordered around; the Cult was at least smart enough to not ask him to fight on their side, just that he watch and judge, and not interfere.)
So, i’m going to say a lot of the Radiant Children were kidnapped, from Arlo the oldest to young little Chi. With the Glass, they are all trapped in this mirror like world, where the gods are weakened and the Healing/Pure Cult is mostly in control. Grimm is forced to watch from the side, though through some sneaky antics, he is able to at least help out the kids break their bindings and get out of enemy hands, but is unable to help outside of that.
All the kids are scared; from the strange shadows they see outside their vision in the mirrored walls, to all the fighting, hiding behind their guards or Mother as the Radiance and their Father, along with other strong warriors, fight the monsters before them.
-
But they are getting worn down; within the mirror realm, they are weakened, and with the Cult able to constantly heal themselves, it seems like no progress is actually being made.
Chi watched on, as their father, who always stood so strong, so tall is beaten back by the enemies, who laugh and sneer in the face of his power. Can’t help but cry out as he see a nasty blow hit Father in one of his wings, the guard protecting the little one stopping them from reaching out.
‘Anyone...’ Chi thinks, tears falling onto their chitin as they watch this terrible battle so different from the stories they read, ‘Anyone, just anyone... please! Please help us...’ those tears ever so slightly blurring their vision, but doing nothing to quiet the cries of their family and friends, from the battle screeching of those fighting.
‘Help my Father..’
Chi can’t help but cry out, jostled as they are by their guard suddenly jumping, trying to get away from one of the Cultist trying to take their precious ward. Hears the louder cries of his siblings, sobs reaching out, distractions on the battlefield that work rather well.
‘Help my brother and sisters!’
(All the while the guard is fighting, forced to put the little one behind them, shadows start to form in the mirrored wall behind little Chi, a form that starts to become clear and clearer as the fight goes on.)
‘Please...’
Chi looks up into those cold, dark eyes of the bug who killed his guard, their nail still stained from their kill as they walk ever so arrogantly forward, the youth easily able to smell how pleased they are. They raise their nail once more, their actions obvious in what they are about to do to stain their nail even further.
‘Help.’
Chi closes their eyes, not able to watch how that deadly nail reaches for them, to end them.
This means their wide eyes flash open when they hear the counter.
Hearing the clashing of nails loud in the sudden silence they seem to be surrounded by, Chi looks up from the ground, watching as a small, grey cloaked bug easily goes toe to toe with the enemy. They are amazingly talented with a nail, performing nail arts Chi has only read about in books. They are even able to perform spells, judging by the soul energy that finally finishes off the foe. It is in this still moment that Chi is able to actually get a good look at the other bug, as they turn to him...
And kinda wishes he didn’t.
From those very familiar horns, the indents inside the tip of them, to the white of their chitin, a pale glow just barely able to be seen, it reminded Chi of one of their sister’s drawings, without any color and unfinished, no life given to it yet.
And yet... it seemed to be living right in front of them, a mirror image of their self in body, if the glass was black and grey that is.
Chi can only watch as this... other tilts their head at the for a bit, the darkness that can only seem to stare at them from their eye holes seeming to deepen the longer they look. Chi can’t help but feel a little relived when the other nods, turning away before they are off into the fight, easily moving within the chaos and madness of it all.
Like they are used to it, at home with it as it were.
-
So yeah, Little Ghost joins the fight, and the tide is turned greatly. Ghost is a tireless, restless fighting machine who only gets more power with every hit they get. To say that the home team are surprised is a very big understament, as one; this looks like one of the children, and two; why do they feel like death and void??!! Pale King does not like this, White Lady is disturbed, and the Radiance is very uneasy.
Grimm is admittedly stunned as well when a little Grimmchild helps Ghost get a few stubborn enemies, the nightmare fire unaffected in this mirrored realm (almost a bit stronger in fact, hence why they tricked Grimm in the first place).
Ghost is very much giving off the Uncanny Valley vibe, and with me imagining this is a fully looped Ghost (every ending has happened, but because of Ghost’s special ability, he just ends up starting over every time) he gives off an even more creepy pasta child feeling.
Not to mention just how OP he is.
When the fight is won and all is said and done, Ghost can go back home anytime as long as he can get to the abyss... but come on, this is Ghost.
Of course he is going to explore first chance he gets.
(And thus, we now have Ghost running wild in this nice little au. :D oh what havoc he will rein.)

... bad end :>
(There are no "bad guys" so I'm using infected au uwu)
They had failed. All had fallen. The god of nightmares, now forgotten.
The queen of dreams, upon her throne, sits and glares at those who groan.
She wills upon those who defy her will, a death that pains all who dare to fuel her anger
And the god I had mention when I had fislrst spoken? Gone, now but a legend. The queen's younger brother, who's heart was ripped and torn, though they were the ones who used to love each other.
Now the god of which I have spoken, is but a puppet, the one who is broken.

I’ve been in the Hollow Knight Ao3 fics and I found this gem of a fic. Honestly not enough people know about it and I think more people should read it because the world-building and the characters that make this fic is AMAZING.
Especially since it has a focus of the Shaman Snail Tribe. They are exploring one of the most mysterious tribes in the Hollow Knight world and they are doing it so wonderfully that I can’t help but GUSH.
So please check it out and leave a review for the author! They definitely deserve it!

Have no idea if you still remember this, but going through some of your posts I found some sketches for the Radiant Knight AU (A Hollow Knight thing) and it seems really cool. I was wondering if (One) you ever expanded on that, and (Two) if I could do some art/maybe stories using that? I will credit if you want me to. Thanks!
Oh!! I have expanded on the Radiant Knight AU a bit, but it’s been a little lost to time by the looks of it. What I remember and have in my notes is under the cut. Feel free to use as much or as little of the Lore as you’d like, and definitely @ me or give me links to anything you make!! You have my full blessing.
One way or another, the Hollow Knight and the Radiance start to talk with one another while the Hollow Knight is chained up in the Temple of the Black Egg. Originally, I had planned that the thing that got them talking was that both of them were complaining about how the Pale King royally screwed each of them over, or the Radiance picking up on the Hollow Knight’s resentment of their father, but honestly that part is still kind of up in the air.
The important part is that they talk. And they are so very far from being friends at first. But oh so very slowly, they get there. It takes an extreme amount of trust on both their parts, but eventually the Hollow Knight lets the Radiance reside inside of them. The Hollow Knight acts as her conduit to affect the world directly and, with their combined powers, they both break out of the Temple of the Black Egg, breaking the seals of the Dreamers in the process and waking them up.
The Radiance’s need to spread and foster the Infection has withered and died. Her hatred of the Pale King is still fully intact, but. Well. She has a steadfast believer in her Knight. And her Knight will always remember her and spread her light. The Hollow Knight, for their part, wishes to traverse the ruins of Hallownest, to learn the home they never got to know. The Radiance tells them tales of what the kingdom used to be like, as well as what everything was like before the Pale King came. The Hollow Knight listens raptly.
Ghost appears on the scene not too long after the Dreamers wake up. Everything is chaotic, Hornet not knowing what the fuck is going on, Lurien and Herrah upset because Monomon isn’t up (Quirrel still has her mask so she’s still locked in limbo), and everything is just!! A bit of a mess.
They eventually find the Hollow Knight, light leaking from where a heart would be and shrouded in the essence of dreams. The Hollow Knight cannot speak, but their thoughts and emotions are known to the Radiance so, with her Knight’s permission, the Radiance speaks for both of them.
They are both tired and have each found a companion after so long without. Neither wish to fight. Though, if pressed, they are a truly deadly foe, mastering both light and void. Think Pure Vessel’s move set and fighting style, but throw in the abilities that the Radiance has on top of that and mixed into it. Very little is a threat to them.
The Hollow Knight is still down one arm, but the Radiance can create a new one for them out of light. She can only channel her powers through the Hollow Knight for a short time, though. While the two of them are in agreement and happy with their new arrangement, channeling that much radiant energy through a vessel of void takes a Serious Toll on the Hollow Knight. The Radiance has to be careful to pull back, because sometimes her Knight does not realize how important their well-being truly is to her.
That is most of what I have on the AU! I hope that you have fun with it! :D If you have any other questions, feel free to shoot another ask or a DM!

Elk and Wiki’s designs for the Heralds of Light AU! They can hide their “radiant” characteristics - Wiki just goes back to normal and Elk’s outfit becomes closer to what they used to wear.
And here’s the whole rundown of this AU (made in collaboration with / some parts written by @zykaben / @heart-the-vessel ):
This timeline begins long after Heart, Wiki, and Elk have met. Elk is fully grown (they grew faster due to constant exposure to Wiki's magic), while Heart is still young. Elk and Wiki do not enter stasis in this timeline. This is long before Ghost and Quirrel's arrival in Hallownest.
Wiki discovered knowledge so secret that they've never encountered it in any other timeline- of a backdoor, of sorts, that Monomon had built into the Black Egg.
With Hallownest already crumbling, they had nothing to lose. They decided to go inside to just... speak to the Radiance. Of course, Wiki researched methods to contact her through the seal and everything. At first, she has to speak through THK - they have magic that can pull the Radiance to the forefront. The trio apologize profusely for making them act as her proxy - and they're sorry for it even long, long after.
So they entered the temple. Offered the Radiance a proposal. Hallownest was but a shell of the past, but... it could be better for all those wronged by the Pale King's actions. Her. The Hollow Knight. All their siblings. The dreamers. The three offered to act as her speakers, heralds of her renewal - all they ask is that she no longer burn the kingdom with her fury.
The Radiance, too, has nothing to lose. She agrees. She grants Elk and Heart their own voices, and they set out to spread word of her light as well.
(Eventually, she uses her magic to dream into reality garments suitable for her "priests.")
(Radiance and THK probably "talk" it out a lot while just... hanging around. They find connection. Closeness. A friendship? Perhaps not defined so stringently.)
Between the Radiance's fury calming, and with Wiki working to dismantle the seal without harm to anyone involved in it, the seal becomes very fragile. Wiki constructed magic that would bring the Radiance into the physical plane, and once they did - the seal completely unraveled. THK was freed. And... Lurien and Herrah woke. But not Monomon.
The three keep a home with the Radiance (she slowly learns to love again), but travel often to spread her light. The Radiance gives a voice to the Hollow Knight as well - though she doesn't like that title. She just calls them 'her Knight.' She gives them figurative and, well, actual wings - wings with which to seek their freedom. (Incorporated some bits of @zykaben ‘s Radiant Knight AU)
They go with the Radiance to meet the White Lady once. The Radiance stays outside, while THK goes in. And for the first time ever, they speak to the White Lady with the voice the Radiance gave them—something that their own mother and father denied. They just... tell the White Lady that they know that they aren't pure, that they're not perfect. But they aren't tainted or tarnished or lesser. They're a person. Someone with a mind to wish, will to love, a voice to scream joy and pain and sorrow and rage. They leave, then, and don't look back. (The Radiance meets them outside and they lean on her for support as she gently places a wing over them.)
It isn't long before Wiki seeks out the other Dreamers - after realizing Monomon still hasn't woken. Lurien and Herrah see Wiki, and think - that must be why. Her consciousness is in this clone of hers.
Incorrect, of course. But Wiki having Monomon's memories and experiences didn't help with that. The two Dreamers frequently insisted on Wiki spending leisure time with them - time in addition to their collaboration on trying to understand why Monomon still slept. It takes a while, but eventually Lurien and Herrah learn to see Wiki as their own being, and they build a proper friendship later.
Now, it didn't take that long for Wiki to realize that there was another layer of a seal on Monomon. But... there was a block in their awareness as to how it was made, and how to unravel it. Slowly, after spending time with the other Dreamers - it was indeed triggering memories of Monomon's past, though that definitely made things awkward for Wiki - they managed to slip into the cracks of that mental block. Quirrel. He still had Monomon's mask.
They approach Monomon in her tank, and try to connect reach her. To tell her to call him back. They're not sure if it works, but—it isn't too long later when a very confused Quirrel and Ghost found themselves in the revived kingdom.
Monomon wakes up, finally. Talking to her face to face is very weird for Wiki, but they slowly build a beautiful friendship. A nerd alliance, so to say.
The kingdom of Hallownest is given another chance - not just at living, but thriving.
Random Notes:
Wiki is also super awkward with Quirrel at first but eventually they find their own dynamic separate from how Quirrel is with Monomon
Quirrel is sometimes up in arms at having to deal with not one, but two fools that don't know when you stop in the pursuit of knowledge
He begs Elk and Heart to keep an eye on Wiki but turns out they enable each other a lot and Quirrel throws some hands
The Radiance learns to love again. With the trio, with THK, with the kingdom of bugs she finally let be themselves
Lurien and Herrah at first have a poor opinion of Elk as a failed vessel, but Wiki is quick to tear them a new one for that
Heart sometimes screeches randomly because w o w having a voice
Elk was also very surprised when they spoke with a voice that wasn't Wiki's, in a good way
Elk and Wiki aren't as intertwined or reliant on each other as they are in other timelines, but still very close.

To Carve a Throne [Hollow Destiny AU]
"Giving is for the Sky. You worship the Deep, which asks that we take what we need.” - aka - “There’s a reason there are relics from before the birth of Hallownest”
(~1200 words // Implied violence & mass death, but nothing descriptive)
[ Read it on AO3 ]
Nearly as one, every citizen of the Kingdom decided to visit the City.
They met one another on the roads – single travelers joining small groups, groups joining together to form larger caravans. Pleasantries were had with each new traveler encountered and when it was learned they were headed in the same direction, the groups grew again.
Each claimed their own reason for traveling and any curiosities and concerns were quickly rationalized away with a gentle shush from the recesses of their own minds. Of course it was possible for so many different bugs to suddenly decide to venture across the kingdom – why wouldn't it be?
Keep walking, keep traveling – it was as good a time as any to visit the City and see its marvels.
"Maybe a Knight will be there! Or even the King himself!" Someone said. A young bug, easily excited by notions of heroism and the mysticism surrounding the King and his Court. Older bugs scoffed, but the young one's mood was infectious and soon everyone was convinced the King would be there. Now, if asked, the reason for travel was, of course, to see the King. Anything else was forgotten or shifted to a secondary goal.
The closer the City grew, the larger the traveling party became, and the more their excitement spurred them on. They had to go! They had to hurry! They couldn't miss the King!
The City's infrastructure was pushed to its limits as bugs poured in from all corners of the kingdom. Streets around the central plaza were packed and noisy as citizens crowded in and chatted away with one another. When no room remained in the streets, bugs flocked to the surrounding buildings, clustering around so they could all peer out the windows. When there were no more accessible windows, some took to perching on rooftops or hanging onto the sides of the buildings themselves.
They all knew, with absolute certainty, that the King would be here in this plaza and they wouldn't dare miss this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set eyes on their reclusive sovereign. The air hummed with the buzz of constant questions.
"Where is he?"
"Is he here yet?"
"What direction will he be coming from?"
"How will we know it's him?"
"What if we've already missed him?"
Time passed and the anticipation was nearly unbearable before a sudden hush fell over the crowds. There! There! There he was! A crown of needle-sharp spires peeking over the crowd, a radiant glow rivaling that of the lanterns lining the streets, there was no mistaking this as their King.
The King glided down the center of one of the main thoroughfares, his gentle footfalls masked by the thunderous steps of the armored Knight following close behind. Feet scrambled on the cobbled street as the crowd hurried to clear a path as the two passed. The bubble of empty space followed the two impressive figures all the way through to the plaza. A low, wordless rumble echoed out from the Knight as the innermost bugs tried to crowd closer to the King.
The bugs stopped their jostling and waited on bated breath as the King circled the plaza and surveyed the surrounding faces.
"My citizens..."
His voice was quiet but unmistakable, and while his expression was unreadable, his voice carried a gentle undertone of affection that set the crowd whispering again. Their King approved of them! He was happy! They jostled each other once more, eagerly awaiting the King's next words.
The gaze of his empty mask cast over the crowd once more. Somewhere in the distance an earth-shattering crack rang out, followed by a long rumble and a tremor in the streets. Excitement flickered to nervousness in an instant before it was smothered by a thick blanket of calm.
A single, slender hand rose up out of the King's robes. "Be still, you are safe."
They stilled. Of course they were safe. Why wouldn't they be?
Another shatter-crack echoed from the other side of the City. The bugs paid it no mind.
The King lowered his hand and spoke again. "You've done well building this kingdom and its cities from nothing, but I require one more thing from you. One final sacrifice to start our next big step."
A stronger tremor rippled through the ground, knocking a few citizens off their feet.
"A true citizen gives all..." The King trailed off, seeming to grow distracted for a moment, and bugs glanced at one another as something like unease bled through the sickeningly sweet balm over their minds. He huffed something that was almost a laugh.  "For this, however, I cannot accept a gift."
Within hundreds of minds, a switch flipped over. Gone was the sense of calm and safety as bugs were confronted with the full force of the uncertainty and fear their own instincts had been trying to push through since they left their homes.
An imperative from their King: "Fight. Survive."
An order from their instincts: "RUN!"
A single, desperate cry rang out from the back of the crowd. "The roads are gone!"
Cold panic gripped the crowd and time seemed to slow.
The road flexed upwards, buckling and collapsing as something passed beneath it.
The King crumpled, dropping to the cold stone.
The Knight shrugged his weapon free, stepping over his King's empty carapace.
Rubble flew as something massive erupted from the foundation of a nearby building. The dark, sinuous form was visible only for a moment before it tore through part of the crowd and burrowed into the ground again. Bugs pushed and stumbled over each other as they tried to get out of the way of the worm, of the rubble, of each other. Metal shrieked as the damage building tilted and collapsed into its neighbor.
Fear and dust choked those who were still living, still desperately searching for safety. They tore at the rubble blocking the routes out of the City as the world fell apart behind them. Many tried to hide or simply collapsed in fear where they stood. An ambitious few realized the deception and tried to attack the Knight or the inert King with whatever they could wield as a weapon. The Knight didn't grant them access to the King or a swift death, instead striking out at legs and arms with precision blows to leave stranded, easy prey for the worm.
The destruction of the City and the collapse of the Kingdom took less than an hour.
Nothing stirred, save for motes of dust lazily drifting back to the ground and the distant rumbling of the worm's retreat. The Knight waited, ever patient, ever defensive, for the King to stir once more.
A twitch of a hand and a rustling of fabric signaled his return and the Knight helped him to his feet. His wings fluttered once before settling back into place as he brushed the dust from his robes. At length, satisfied with his appearance, he straightened and surveyed the carnage.
"Quite the mess," the Knight said.
The King cast a glance at him, studying him for a moment. "The universe does not bow to things done gently."
"You were successful, then?"
"For now, yes. But come, there is still much to do."

Heyo there, we’re the mintaka system.
Our system blog where you can find the other’s blogs is here! @onismsystem
Ao3 account // Current WIP: Delusions in Blood Testing (new fic/Genshin Impact fic), “If It’s You, Only for You”(Aesvic fic) , and Limerance
We’re an adult who heavily enjoys several fandoms, with the current main interest being Identity V! Read below for more information about the Hollow Knight aus or ourselves!
We are Transmasc (he/they) and queer. We have a wonderful partner. We also have multiple ailments you might see us talk about. We also consume media critically and are just here to have fun!
We’ve had a few urls in the past, with the last one being Ventiapologest
We also have multiple Hollow Knight aus, the most common you’ll see is the following:
Radiant King Au (#radiant king au):
The Radiance gets too far in her own head trying to come up with a plan to get her close friend Unn’s land back to her from the Pale Wyrm. At first thought to be a mess up in a ritual to take over the body of someone in the pale court she finds herself in the body of her enemy and not a trace of him that she can see…for now.
Time Heals Au (#time heals au):
This au is under reworking and redesigning. Ghost was called to this land for some reason, something calling for them to save it. When they arrive to the land it is a n terrible shape. They push forward and ignore the happenings in the abandoned kingdom that only idiots would find themself in. Meeting many bugs along the way they have a growing fondness for those misfits still left living in these ruins. Eventually they find the Godseeker, ascending to godhood and taking down the Radiance. With the infection gone, Ghost and their siblings Hornet and Luna (previously known as The Hollow Knight) rebuild Hallownest while minding the mistakes of their predecessors. Soon enough Hornet goes missing, even if it was just for a month it worried her siblings. She would come back changed and with regrets festering in her chest from leaving a specific bug behind. (This is the Au in which the series “The bells ring in the distance but all I can think about it you” takes place.)
Merbug Au (name still pending):
Pretty much because I love drawing mermaids this came about. It is currently being worked on enough to have a coherent plot.
Archaic Au (#Archaic au):
This one doesn’t have much to it yet in the public, I need to organize my thoughts more on the Au but expect to see some art at some point!
We also have some original projects we may post about!
Limerence (#Limerence, #Rubchou)
A series surrounding two boys, Mochou and Ruby, as they grow up and find out there’s more supernatural in the world than they ever thought and that everything they had been taught by others is wrong. They both are forced to come to terms with this and the fact they are much much more involved in this than they ever thought. All of this is happening as they learn to navigate with not only their growing relationship but also their mental health issues.
Onism Mendacious (#Onism)
A personal project using characters made by me and my friend! It’s a feel good project I’m working on where the reader is transported into a royal court where all the members don’t act human what-so-ever even down to their jokes. The reader will get close to the fae jester Jesi (They/Fae) and the unusual secretary named Byleth along with many others within the court.
