Sir Howard Davies: Not that difficult to buy a home, says NatWest chair - BBC News
Out of touch with reality...or just a Tory liar?
'Sir' Howard Davies, in his ivory tower at NatWest Bank, clearly has either no clue about the lives of ordinary people, or is cynically denying the truth.
Is he a Tory donor or supporter?
If the average UK house price is over 拢250k, how many working people can lay their hands on over 拢25,000 in cash for a deposit, or earn at least 拢60,000-拢80,000 plus per year, to qualify for a big enough mortgage?
Earnings haven't kept pace with property prices for years:

It will take Torontonians making a median annual income of $91,858 about 25 years to save for a down payment on a house, according to a new housing affordability report. But, the report also notes the real estate market is seeing improvement in affordability.
The聽National Bank of Canada (NBC) released its housing affordability report聽for the first quarter of 2023, where it analyzed the condo market, as well as other dwellings and the real estate market as a whole in 10 major cities across Canada.
The bank factored how long it takes a median-income household to save up for the cash down payment, which is measured by the number of months needed to save for the minimum payment at a savings rate of 10 per cent of its pre-tax income.

Sooooooo life update?
I'm getting married to the love of my life after being together for almost 2 years. We definitely didn't do the stereotypical uhaul method but we also didn't go too slowly either lol.
Also we are currently living in and learning all about our new house?! We have a beautiful old home, over 120 years old, that we are turning into our own little oasis in the middle of town. Also discovering all the wonderful "landlord specials" the previous owner blessed us with repairing.
I'd like to use this space to mostly talk about the different home repairs/decorating that we're going to be doing/two queer women living together in a successful relationship if that's anything anyone here wants to see. It's crazy to think how far I've come from where I started with this little blog and how much I've gone through, and I'm not quite ready to give it up just yet 馃槉

I just want to remind y'all why you should have insurance.
Because I am not a perfect person, I put off getting insurance on my crappy little prefab home. Now I have a leak in the roof. The roofer got up there and let me know that even though my shingles are new (I was told when I moved in that the roof had recently been redone), the underlayment is NOT new and is compromised. He said it looks like a DIY job, and the shingles that were used are so cheap they were discontinued because their unreliability meant they were seldom up to code. In other words, previous homeowner did it himself and did a shitty job.
It's $10-13k to re-roof. I was basically expecting that. HOWEVER, because the roof is shitty, there's internal and wall damage as well that needs to be fixed eventually. Probably some mold. Obviously that will be a whole other cost as well.
He showed me photos of hail damage to the shingles.
If I'd had insurance, even if they typically didn't cover water damage, those hail marks would have earned me a fully covered claim for both the roof and all the internals. All of it. Instead I'm out of pocket.
Y'all, I'm an insurance agent. I know better. I got lazy. Now it will cost me probably $20k when all is said and done. PLEASE take my advice: get your place insured, EVEN IF YOU RENT, so you can be lazy LATER when something happens, and let the insurance take care of it.

Fixed our water heater!
Tumblr media
Fixed our dead water heater! This post is a little PSA if you're ever in the same position and want to save a few hundred bucks (or if you're a renter and don't want to wait for the landlord to get around to fixing it).
The pilot light was out, and the indicator panel showed nothing, so I was at a loss. First (after turning off gas and power) I cleaned and vacuumed the air intake, but that changed nothing. I tested the ignitor, and it produced spark when pressed, but the pilot light remained out. That meant something else was preventing gas from flowing. Could be many things!
Apparently the most common issue is the thermocouple, which creates a tiny flow of electricity to the control panel when heated with a pilot light, and allows that to open the gas valve to heat your water. Testing could reveal the issue to be one of many other things, so I went to the interwebs looking for answers.
This video provided them! Turns out our problem was a clogged pilot tube, which I cleared with compressed air, then scrubbed clean with a toothbrush soaked in carburetor cleaner, and blasted with air again to dislodge gunk.
After reassembling everything and doing the pilot-lighting procedure, voila - a little fire lit up! After replacing the cover, I reset the control panel and switched to regular operation. Full-on water-heating levels of fire!
Soon we'll have hot water again, thanks to this kind person: X

You know that you're an adult when you get a new washer and after the first load, you want to wash everything in the house because things came out so clean.

Seriously, you don't realize how shitty your washer was until you get a new one.

British Columbia is expanding the tax it created to clamp down on聽real estate聽speculation and ensure homes in rental-strapped communities don鈥檛 sit empty.
A statement from the Ministry of Finance says the聽Speculation and Vacancy Tax聽now includes the municipalities of North Cowichan, Duncan, Ladysmith, Lake Cowichan, Lions Bay and Squamish.
Starting early next year, homeowners in those areas will join owners in 40 other B.C. cities, districts and towns who are required to declare how their property was used in 2023.
The statement says 99 per cent of people who live in B.C., can expect to be exempt for the 2023 tax year, but homeowners in the new municipalities, along with those already covered by the tax, must make formal declarations in the new year.
