went for a rare visit to twitter bc i heard con o'neill said some things abt ofmd and i wanted to see what was up, and i ended up seeing a lot of “ed is abusive” and “this show condones abuse and abuse apologism to a dangerous degree” takes. a lot of talking abt how the show was an irresponsible portrayal of domestic violence. a lot of relating the violence in ofmd to real-world domestic abuse.
and i’m sorry but i just can’t take that criticism of the show seriously bc the portrayal of domestic violence that they were talking about was literally. amputation and forced autocannibalism.
like. cmon. real-world domestic abuse does not typically involve forced autocannibalism.
we have word-of-god confirmation from djenks himself that in the context of the fictional pirate world of ofmd, the toe stuff is pretty normal pirate stuff, and only shooting izzy’s leg was “a bit much.” and of course fans are free to analyze the show however they want and feel whatever way they want to feel about the way the show depicts physical violence. but personally i just cannot lend credence to the belief that this show handles domestic violence in a harmful way because the physical violence in ofmd is so gratuitously and ridiculously over the top that i frankly find it silly to try and relate it to real-world domestic violence.

Listening to a podcast discussing conspiracy theories and deconstructing the ideas behind them and it's reminded me of the coolest practical lessons in critical thinking I ever got, both in high school, both from the same teacher. One was a month long project on who killed jfk in which we could basically present any theory as long as we cited all our reasons and it got us really excited about research and interpretation, but it was the follow up that I liked best.
Our next project she brought us into class and showed us a documentary claiming the moon landing was faked. Gave us worksheets to do that sided with that stance. And at the end of class a bunch of us were like miss wait this doesn't seem right?? and she said okay, we'll discuss that next week. The next lesson, she showed us a mythbusters episode countering all the claims of the original documentary and gave us worksheets for that, and another bunch of people went wait miss you can't teach us two opposing things, which one is right? What do we put on the exam??
So she split the class in two and told us each to present a case based on each side, and to explain why our source was or wasn't the more reliable of the two. Got us to debate each other directly and use additional sources to back us up and explain why those sources were reliable and should be believed. And because they were randomly assigned there was no guarantee you'd agree with the stance you were presenting, but you had to present it like you did. At the end of the project she asked us all which stance we found more convincing and why, and the majority of us basically said "we think that the moon landing is real because most of the arguments against it seem like someone reacted to a confusing thing without testing it, but when you test it and ask the person running the test to explain the science it makes sense once you have more information. Also, one documentary was made with the help of scientists with qualifications and experience and the other was made by people who don't have that but like to write mystery books, which looks like a less reliable way to get an answer. But we still dont understand why you showed us both if one is wrong."
And she was like excellent. You've done exactly what you should do. At high school level, we as teachers are expected to filter for the reliable sources for you, so you know to repeat that to pass an exam, but if you want to be historians on your own, I won't be your teacher any more once you graduate. Lots of people have opinions and theories and research about times in history, and it's your job to learn how to look at them and decide who you want to trust. This won't be on the exam, but I need you all to know it. You all did a great job following the school's instructions to repeat information you were given, but for some of you, that information wasn't on a reliable foundation. I know you all know how to pass an exam. You're smart and you've been trained to follow these instructions. What you deserve to be taught is how to use all this once you don't have to do exams any more.
And then as a reward for us doing a good job at figuring out the value of checking your sources' sources she let us watch Bush get hit in the face with a shoe before we had to go to maths. Shoutout to you Ms Hannah you were a good'un I hope you're doing well ten years on from that class

The cultural impact Arrested Development has had is insane especially because it feels like a lot of people dont realize they are citing that show
"Dead dove: do not eat"
"Good for her"
"How much could a banana cost?"
The gif of the excavation site skull being smashed
"I love all of my children equally- I dont care for Gob"
"We finish each others sandwiches"
"Get me a vodka-" its the morning- "and a piece of toast"
"Why are you squeezing me with your body"
Do people know? Do they know they are quoting Lucille Bluth???

hiii!! cool blog, just wanted to know your opinions on drag? i don’t see it being talked about a lot on radblr but i like the way you phrase things and articulate so i just wanted to ask u and maybe start a discussion.
i see so much misogyny committed by gay males but for some reason drag queens are always so much worse. like on the american tv show drag comp where one of the challenges was to walk down the runway nude but w female genitalia??? it’s so disgusting but whenever i try n talk about it i always get hit with the ‘they just like women so much they gotta dress like them’ which is odd because how does a woman dress and why does respecting women = larping as a bunch of misogynistic stereotypes. honestly reminds me of tim’s 🤷‍♀️
anywho would love your opinion!!
ohhhhh mootina thank you for this lovely question, for its something thats actually been on my mind for some time!!!
ive actually been on the fence with my thoughts about drag the last year, but i think ive finally come to a conclusion
i dont like drag
i dont like that something that is historically meant to imitate, and ridicule women in an exaggerated form is being hailed as the peak of modern art
i do think its quite misogynistic
and also recently something i noticed is the influx of drag queens who are beginning to identify as trans women and are crediting and citing their drag as the thing which made them realize theyre a woman
like um.....
so u mean to tell me . that you doing drag which is historically an exaggerated caricature and parody of women is what made u realize ur a woman?
doing an exaggerated caricature and parody of women... was the key to realizing ur a woman? .. ..????#?#??

Do you have a favorite Atla-ship/ships you like a lot? (Both shipping of characters and the boats in the show)
lmfao well i like the southern water tribe boats a lot. i think the blue sails on the cutters are very pretty. the fire nation boats are not nearly as nice to look at, but also shoutout to these things that can be seen pulling the fire nation kids’ boat at the beginning of “the beach”:
Tumblr media
they’re never brought up again, but also I just looked it up and apparently they’re called manatee whales. personally I don’t think that even begins to cover it, but whatever. not my problem!
in terms of relationships, korrasami is hands down my favorite avatar ship of all time and it’s not even close. i know i dont talk about them as much any more bc this is mostly an atla blog and also it’s been nearly a decade, but you just gotta trust me when i tell you that they literally irrevocably changed and improved my life. we don’t really talk about the monumental groundbreaking importance of korrasami anymore, but at the time that shit was fucking crazy, like if you weren’t there i don’t even know how to begin to explain it to you. for all of lok’s flaws, the fact that korrasami even exists at all is truly amazing to me. i will love them forever
as for other ships, my favorite ship in atla specifically is mai/ty lee. they were sort of the proto-korrasami for me lol. love those bitches. also love sokka/yue (i think i might be the only one who actually truly Gets them, but that’s ok, that’s my burden to bear) and sokka/suki of course (bi4bi excellence). also, technically not atla but i really love yangchen and kavik together. i feel like a fake lesbian for citing them and not kyoshi and rangi, but (and i’m sorry for this) they really are so much more interesting to me. anyway, i guess if i had to pick my top 5 avatar ships it would be those. i guess that’s a pretty predictable answer if you already know me but like. what did you expect

AO3 Election Candidates!
If any of you are members of AO3 and eligible to vote in the election this weekend I would highly encourage it! The site has a great webpage (https://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/22947) where you can do your own research on candidates, and I would definitely recommend everyone to check that out!
What sparked my interest in the first place were other people raising concerns about Tiffany G who is running for the board but does not seem to stand for the positions that AO3 is most known and loved for.
My personal impressions of the candidates will be down below, but please take these opinions with the understanding that I'm not attempting to sway votes (except for maybe away from Tiffany) and just provide my thoughts. These are also the notes I'll be using to cast my personal ballot
Natalia G - Fourth pick I like her Q&A answers well enough. She emphasizes the legitimacy of fanworks and references the terms of service. She does reference the attacks against AO3 which shows an awareness of the issues that are relevant, but doesn't make any strong statements that show a firm stance. Her diversity responses emphasize the push for a blocking feature, but nothing super concrete beyond that.
Noemie B - Third pick Noemie explicitly warns of the dangers of censorship and references that every platform has specific terms of use and committees in place to protect and develop. She cites a personal affection for AO3 which is important to me, but she also doesn't cite a negative experience and idk if thats a kind of willful positivity or not?
I do like that she cites user responsibility in exposure to problematic content and again points out the dangers of censorship. She also recognizes anti-blackness and transphobia as issues and cites specific actions and events to combat that.
Michelle S - Second pick Michelle also emphasizes the TOS and states that she has no plans to prescreen content or increase moderation, but she doesn't directly address concerns regarding censorship or the abuse towards the PAC team.
her diversity responses, like Noemi, reference the push to hire a diversity consultant. She specifically references AO3's existing features to handle harrassment and curate content, but doesn't take credit or promise any specific new features. Instead, she points out that the AD&T committee are the wizards who do that. She mentions maximum inclusivity and stresses user responsibility which are plusses in my book. She states she signed the June 2020 statement on racism as a chair
Heather M - Likely my first pick Heather is more user-focused in her response surrounding frustrations with the OTW. She also mentions the attacks against volunteers and has a nice statement about the response following the attack. She also cites a personal affection for AO3 and states that monitoring content is a ridiculous standard.
Her diversity responses are very strong to me as she shows an awareness of the racism in fandom but also an understanding of how systemic the issues truly are. She specifically references the proposed block feature and even cites a difference between active harassment and unintentional ignorance. She also cites specific features available to users to curate content and stresses the stance of maximum inclusivity. Her experience on the policy and abuse team is also a big plus. She also speaks about the history and purpose of the OTW.
Tiffany G - last pick She is definitely the most concerning of the candidates. Her statements are pretty sweeping and general and she doesn't list a lot of concrete stances or experiences except for personal anecdotes that dont always support her points. She is just as worrisome as the other posts make her out to be and doesn't answer with the same maturity and experience as the other candidates. I know im not saying as much about her specific stances but its hard to find anything of substance to even pull over into this post.
also in one interview she was weirdly against NSFW content which like... is kind of the whole reason AO3 exists
Obligatory Disclaimer: this is purely my personal impressions and opinions. I have been using AO3 for at least 5 years now (likely much longer) and been a member for over three. I've donated a considerable amount to the organization since AO3 in turn supports my livelihood as a writer, so i do have a vested interest in the well-being of the website also i think free speech and transformative works are important

I gots some drugs for yall fiends > plug back <
Tumblr media
1 > No one wants to talk to each other Hi how are you? good thanks :) Nice day isnt it. It for sure is! Hey wyd. not much wbu. Im chilling. Same lol. what are you doing? Im watching something on youtube. Oh nice. Wbu? im watching anime. Oh cool. No wonder we are all fiends for some entertainment, because we are incapable of entertaining each other. 2 > The insecurity of not sounding smart makes everyone conform into a retarded form of one another. We all have the same views. The same topics are constantly being brought up. And when someone speaks about something new, everyone loses interest because no one can handle the reality that maybe they don't know something. Oh and the only reason you listen to each other is to get something from that person whether that be attention, or clout or whatever the fuck you define as your ends. Since most of us, are in a state of fear, we aren't able to talk about something we don't know about. 3 > Mercury is about confidence. And most of yall bite your tongues but love to act tough. Every person who has told me they are hard, is incapable of pushing the envelope. I think you are more caught up with your own image, and are afraid of not appearing tuff. But guess what true courage is about revolting against whats normal, or the courage to be wrong. Show dont tell true?. ANd im done hearing about whoever the fuck you think you are. Show me something interesting dont tell me what you think you are. Don't tell me what you want me to hear. 4 > Conversations are being ruined by people who are constantly telling others they are wrong. Excuse me fucker. But are you capable of arguing against me? No beyond that. Can you stick to the conversation at hand, or are you going to source the same sources every SJW ever has cited. Your not even a real person, your just mimicrying beliefs you believe in. Pathetic tbh. Hey whatever more people will agree with you because we are all jsut looking for a place to belong. so good for you. You chose the easy way out bravo. I thought conversations were a place to discuss and learn. But your so focused on being correct. to me you look wrong, but you do 'sound' right because well .. to reiterate we all want to be right so we band together with whats acceptable. 5 > School fucked you. You were told to sit down and stfu. and if you were invested in to the conversation in the class room. You were memed on by all ur class mates. School breeds insecurity, and teaches people to sit down. Thats why some of yall are so forceful in standing up for yourself. Trying to break the chains of the past. And before you point the finger at me. Don't shoot the messenger. we were all brainwashed, I dont blame anyone trying to change the foundations of your past, considering how fucked it all really is 6 > "Im not that smart" This is just an excuse. Learning everyone can do. You just need to concentrate and put effort in. "oh I canT beCauSe I HaVe ADHD" well my bad just take more of that meth shit that way you can turn into mini hitler and become smart I guess. Also if your so insecure go cry to your psychologists like ffs. Eveyrone can be smart. YOu just need to develop your confidence > Rule 3 <
7 > You learn from what you see. monkey see monkey do. if your surrounded by a bunch of dumb cunts. YOur a dumb cunt now. If your being put down by people in your clique you are surrounded by negativity. If your being constantly praised for nothing you are surrounded by yes man. Find diversity. use discrepency. Its perfectly okay to judge people. stop suppressing that urge to appear 'normal' Many people are not normal but we are so caught up in trying to act normal when we are all pretty fucky 8 > The past was different and so will be the future. Would you shut the fuck up with the pessmism. Things will change. You need to be open to receiving it. You've had happy times as much as youve had bad times. ANd if your trapped in a big pit hole of death. well you better get climbing because no one can be bothered to help anyone anymore because we are probably the most selfish we've ever been ever (social mediaaaaasaa) and the adults are still trying to adjust to the internet because the world been flipped (itll flip again) 9 > No one cares about your opinion more than you Thats why your so uncomfortable speaking your truth. Because everyone is more into their own truths. So we practise the art of self affirmation by denying other peoples truths. When everything exists for a reason. WE are so caught up in making our own manifestations true by denying others 'truths.' Selfish cunts.... But hey wtf am I saying Im just an anonymous pluto I don't know shit ;')
Tumblr media
My next post is my last post. Don't cry. I have my reasons. My next post however is going to my >master piece< ;')

I very respectfully, tactfully, reasonably addressed the flag issue with my housemates, stated my perspective, was well-received by almost everyone, only for The ACAB Tattoo FTMs shut it down, citing how POC can't hide their marginalization so as a white person I have a responsibility to take on some of the burden & the risk of visibility. So of course with everyones white guilt activated they went Oh, Right! (Love when "minority issues" are nonsensically flattened onto the same plane) I even addressed prior to this that yes I do think it does make a positive impact when other people are able to feel welcome and supported in the neighbourhood by knowing there's other LGBT people but when I come home to a burnt flag vandalized with homophobia waiting for me on the welcome mat, knowing that if I had been home 2 minutes sooner I would have seen it happen, I feel neither welcome nor supported & I dont think that flags & sloganeering come close to being helpful for anyone in the long run especially when the people in the community being advocated for by said flags & slogans are being put at risk by what is supposed to serve as a signifier of solidarity. This isnt solidarity, its asking that we needlessly put ourselves in potential danger for the wellbeing of– who, exactly? They spewed out something about how my "trauma response" is "valid" (flase virtue moment! Reducing the issue to aesthetic representations of Freedom while depriving the people it represents of anything resembling such a thing!) but we have a "responsibility" to be "visibly queer". As if I have not primarily moved through the world as such. As if the times I have been stealth werent predicated upon a lifetime of ostracization harassment and outright abuse for being a gender nonconforming female & a homosexual one at that. I dont wallow in it but come on! What does any of this do for anyone! Good Feels dont pay the rent or provide legal protections. But of course people like these housemates of mine think legal protections = assimilationist & society needs to be burned to the ground & the average working class person is too problematic to be saved so lets just kill everyone but also we were put on this earth to love one another lol OK why dont you start first by showing you posess the capacity to be considerate about the people within your own household? This whole activist larp is such an obvious ego thing... Come on. Even thinking outside of my own desire for dignity how is anyone Im supposed to be useful to others in any way if they're busy dealing with being harassed? How could I ever hope to "help the LGBT community"– since that's apparently all that matters god forbid a female lead ones own life without being a martyr one way or a fucking other– in the long run, if in the short-term I cant just go home & not have to worry about my roommates doing something stupid like gluing shards of glass to the back of the new flag which will only serve to further anger people intent on harassing us, potentially escalating the situation?

I decided to ask around on all the fish/ocean blogs I follow: how do you learn more about the ocean?? I love the ocean and I really wanna learn more about my favorite sea creatures and beyond but I have no idea how to get started. Are there documentaries or shows your recommend? Books? How do you go about doing research for fun (the American school system has failed me, go figure)? How do you even remember it all? I crave to learn but where I could possibly start is as vast as the ocean itself.
i think i replied to this ask on someone elses answer too, but ill repeat what i said
i usually go looking on wikipedia for something that seems interesting, or google scholar
and then what you do, after finding something that seems interesting, is go either to the reference list, or the "cited by" and you can go on an endless rabbithole of similar papers about one or two topics
as to remembering it all. uh. the answer is i dont really
i often have to refer back to notes and things, i dont really know any scientific names or anything past the ones i put effort into and made flashcards for
most academics are generally focused on one niche topic, its very very hard to Know Everything about Everything. if you find one or two topics you find interesting to begin with, you might start absorbing knowledge

There's this weird thing going on Reddit right now where people are claiming that legally, Rhaenyra children are not bastards. And I was wondering if you agree or disagree. I think that people are just making up their own canon lore at this point.
Well. Okay I think I’m about to give an answer that is a little spicy but when I get around to my ultimate point I think everyone is going to go "yeah it makes sense that's how you feel, that tracks." Let me start with a personal story to be extra annoying-
My mom, after separating from my dad, swore of marriage. Marriage derailed her life, it had derailed my grandma's life, so she decided that even if she truly fell in love again, she would stay unmarried because clearly marriage jinxes love. She met my stepdad and as he had been divorced three times (and bitterly each time too) he agreed. He proposed to her but it was really just a commitment thing - I promise I am all in on this relationship, and by wearing this ring, you promise too. He moved in. They had one of my siblings, K, and still remained unmarried despite pushback from a few relatives and friends.
And then my stepdad needed knee surgery. And my mom couldn't put a domestic partner on her insurance. So a week before my second sibling, B, was born, after my aunt finished teaching summer school for the day, on what was a random Thursday afternoon, we all put on some nice clothes, piled into the van, and went down to city hall where they got hitched and I cried while everyone made fun of me because their toddler was literally running around the waiting room, it was not a big deal! My parents were both wearing jeans!!! We went to Baker's Square after, not even a nice restaurant! Do you know how this marriage has affected K and B? Not even a little! Do you know why?
BECAUSE NONE OF THIS MATTERS.
There is no moral or biological difference between a child born in wedlock and a child born outside of it. If you put K and B's blood under a microscope and I didn't tell you the ages would you be able to tell the difference between them? Would you be able to figure out which one of my siblings is a bastard and which one is trueborn? No, you would not because the difference doesn't exist biologically, ontologicaly, ecologically, anthropologically, whatever ology you want to bring up, and I think what this fandom finds most frustrating is that there is also no legal difference because LAWS ARE MADE UP. THEY DONT FUCKING MATTER. THEY ARE MAN MADE. I need this fandom to kill the prosecutor that lives in their head and stop arguing over whether Rhaenyra’s oldest boys are ~really~ bastards or not. The “truth” of this is just as it is for my family - it’s completely emotional, situational, and dependent on the feelings of the people involved in it!
Alicent & Otto & Criston, in both the books and the show, have an ulterior motive to insist that legally Rhaenyra’s boys are bastards. They can talk about propriety and legality all they want, but not only were those boys raised and loved by Laenor & Corlys, the concepts of marriage & wedlock & legitimacy are merely tools used to keep people in their place, something those three are very aware of because Otto manipulates the law in order to cut Daemon out of the line of succession which is exactly what kicks off this conflict in the first place! Corlys & Laenor & Rhaenyra have completely different but still existent ulterior motives to insist that legally the boys are true born. They can talk about “well technically” and cite whatever law or precedent they want but again, this same insistence on their legitimacy is a cover for the fact that if they ARE admitted to be not Laenor’s, they all lose access to power.
Not only that, but both Rhaenyra and Alicent become insistent on these competing legalities because they are worried the other will kill their children. Alicent all but confirms that she would have killed them if Rhaenyra had accepted terms with her nasty comment about their deaths when Rhaenyra takes the capital, but Rhaenyra throws her own insistence that she won’t hurt her siblings out the window with b&c.
So yeah, people are making up their own canon lore here because both Otto and Rhaenyra are ALSO making up their own canon lore here. That’s the entire point. Both of these sides have their own agendas, their own very rational fear of the other, and instead of realizing they have to compromise just a bit to get out of the shitshow they’ve found themselves in, they escalate at every turn until they’re all dead and so are their dragons.
The point is - I think everyone is missing here that George is making fun of you nerds who spent all your time insisting they’re bastards or not and debating the legality ad nauseum. He has Stannis ranting about the sanctity of the line of succession and House Baratheon and everyone misses that Stannis is a fucking loser for this because the line started one generation ago and if he didn't want Robert overthrown by Cersei maybe he should have made sure Robert wasn't raping and beating her all the time!! It is the same exact thing here!! If they didn't want Rhaenyra to have bastards, they shouldn't have jerked her around as heir for years then trapped her in a marriage she resented to fix their stupid ass mistakes and if they didn't want the whole thing to escalate into a bloody war, they shouldn't have murdered Luke and Jaehaerys!! That simple!!!!
LEGITIMACY AND MARRIAGE ARE NOT REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hiya Jo, sorry to come to you for this, but your post on Maya Knuckles was so cool I had to ask. You seem good at researching stuff, do you have any tips on looking for sources on specific groups of people? I've been struggling on finding good resources on indigenous groups from brasil... (I'm brazilian myself but i dont know where to start)
I wouldn't say I'm good at research, as I think I'm more insanely curious and just lucky LOL. A lot of times when I try to search for specific things I try absolutely everything until I stumble on whatever I was looking for!
But usually I start with a quick basic skim-read on whatever google gives you when you look up whatever your looking for. Most often then not it'll probably give a wikipedia page, some related news articles and some unsourced pages. A lot of times I won't use any of these, but it's a good way to get a feel for what you'll need to keep an eye for.
What I mean is that sometimes just looking for the main subject of the research wont actually give you what you're looking for. For example, when I was looking for Mayan stuff, it kept giving me Inca and Aztec info, which is cool, but wasn't what i was looking for. But since these 3 were usually grouped together, looking for Inca and Aztec books/resources actually helped me a bunch into finding what I was looking for, and more! So keep an eye out on how the subject you're looking for is COMMONLY described, what's usually associated to it, what people talk about the subject etc.
Then you can go actually searching for thing now, I recommend using DuckDuckGo! And always check if they got a source. Plenty of articles will say things that they've seen on other articles, which maybe are true! but then you always run the risk of getting incorrect facts. So always check, if it's not sourced, run another search with the info and see if another article has a source.
When you do find an article/book with a source THEN you can fall down the rabbit hole! No joke one sourced article can lead you to 5 sources, which most probably also have sources. So from there it's pretty easy to search up on references.
If you run into a dead end and still hasn't found what you're looking for I recommend checking what the wikipedia page is citing as sources. You might not be able to access everything there, but some links should be able to redirect you to somethings.
In terms of paywalled scientific articles, disabling javascript usually works (right click on the page -> inspect element -> find the gear on the top right of the window it just showed up -> scroll down until you see a checkbox saying "disable Javascript" -> and refresh page). But if that doesn't work, Sci-Hub is fucking amazing. Just put down your ref or DOI and voilá!
For books I recommend checking the Internet Archive! They usually have what you're looking for, but also half of the time you can just type "Book name PFD" and it'll usually come up after a few search pages. Just make sure you know how to download stuff without getting a virus in you PC.
Reverse image search can also be pretty useful if you find an image related to the subject, since you can link up to other articles/blogs.
If you're STILL running in dead ends, switching up languages can help (probably not your case since your brazilian and most likely already searching in portuguese but yknow). Google translate extensions can really help looking into pages with languages you don't know! It's not perfect but it might help you get a gist of it.
And lastly if you want to know more about Indigenous people from Brazil, I got a couple of reccomendations (most in portuguese btw)!
Centro de Referência Virtual Indígena
Probably the BIGGEST resource on historical and political information on Indigenous groups. It hosts around 2,3 million documents ranging from bills passed, to personal diary entries. (aaaaand can link up to a lot of other cool resources)
Observatórios dos Direitos e Políticas Indigenistas
Translated from their website: OBIND aims to obtain and systematize quantitative and qualitative data on territorialization processes, territorial management, interethnic conflicts, human rights and quality of life of indigenous peoples and populations in reserved areas or in urban contexts, in order to enable visibility, comparability, evaluation and guidance for indigenous policies and promotion of their rights, notably those pertinent to respect for their uses, customs and traditions and the exclusive enjoyment of the lands they traditionally occupy, recognizing for this the sine qua non condition of promoting indigenous autonomy and overcoming guardianship as assimilationist legacy.
Indígenas pela Terra & Vida
Youtube playlist about many different Indigenous people recounting their experiences and narratives.
GENOCÍDIO INDÍGENA E POLÍTICAS INTEGRACIONISTAS: demarcando a escrita no campo da memória
Book titled: INDIGENOUS GENOCIDE AND INTEGRATIONIST POLICIES: demarcating writing in the field of memory

hi! i don't know how to bring up adhd diagnosis to my parents. they're those "you don't need a label" people. and they're very loving and i know the worst they could say is no, but somehow that feels worse than staying undiagnosed
sorry i don't mean to vent but... any advice?
sounds like you need to convince them of the benefits of you getting a diagnosis.
if you havent already, make yourself an adhd evidence document (i have explained this in previous posts so i wont do it again here, if you havent seen it or need a reminder scroll back through the adhd tag on my blog and you should find it). this should help you to convince them that you have adhd in the first place
then make a list of all of the reasons why you want a diagnosis. this could be accessing reasonable accommodations in school, getting medication, understanding yourself better, or something more personal to you.
if you want to take it a step further, write it like a persuasive essay. you've probably written a bunch of them in English class by now! if you haven't, look up the Point Evidence Explain structure and that should help. find some medical or academic sources to cite if you can!
what you need to help them understand is that its not just about the label, its about what that label opens up for you. tell them how you are struggling (adhd evidence doc) and then show them how a diagnosis would alleviate that (meds, accommodations, etc.)
adhd isnt just "ooh im so quirky- oh look a squirrel!" it has actual detrimental impacts on our school lives, our home lives, and our mental health. but most people just dont know that! explaining all of this to them should increase your chances of convincing them that you need a diagnosis.
if this still doesnt work, look up how old you have to be to have medical autonomy where you live. it might be younger than you think! although i think in most places it is 18. once you reach that age you can take yourself to the doctor and get referred (as long as you aren't in the States and have to pay for it, in that case im sorry)
hope this helps! good luck!!

Heya!
What do you do when your stressed? I feel like people really dont talk about YOU as much!
if you want I can also tell you what I do when im stressed!
-Vixen
How considerate of you to think of me, @theyvixen /g
I have LOTS of tools to use when I'm stressed, I just...
Simply do not use them sometimes.
I will add everything I SHOULD do when stressed, regardless of the underlying causes to do not stretch my post - it will be long anyway...
✨️ My ways of HEALTHY stress coping: THE MASTER LIST ✨️
Stimming, fidgeting, anything that uses my senses to help me with my focus
Touching spikey objects (Raph's shell, I do have pressure rings & balls) to ground myself - friendly reminder that it can become a self-injuring stim if you're not careful enough & that's NOT a healthy way of coping (I know they're effective in the specific situation)
Chirping & churring, Echolalia, aka vocal stimming to calm myself down or keep myself grounded
Chewing gum
Tuning out bright lights with sunglasses & unwanted, complex noises with my headphones (Mikey gifted me galaxy-themed ear defenders for at home!!!!)
Reducing verbal communication to text or sign language
Taking a break from the situation that's stressful or leaving entirely
Listening to music, stim dance to it & sing along to release tension
If I am to concentrate: meditation
Watching my favourite movies & shows or clips of them if I am able to
Screaming into a pillow
Deep pressure from Raph or my weighted blanket
Writing my thoughts out (paper or phone, mostly phone, though)
Running (like the exercise)
Thinking of my special interests, e.g. citing facts in my head, favourite lines, ...
Hydrating & eating something to get energy (sometimes I'm just dehydrated & in need of food)
Talk to Mikey
Dissociating
Seek comfort in Nardo (which is just me sticking to him)
This list is probably very incomplete, but that was all I was able to remember at the moment.
Apologies.
Me whenever my brothers ask if I have done active meltdown/ shutdown prevention:
Tumblr media
Please share your ways of coping with stress! I'd love to read them & find new ways!
Thank you for the lovely inbox, I appreciate it!

right okay i dont know exactly how persistent an issue this is bc i almost never go into the tags on this website, but even ive noticed this happening so i feel like that’s justification to make a post about it. the whitewashing of julian bashir as an established Thing not just in the fandom but in official merch has been discussed before, but recently i’ve noticed the inverse happening with martok and b’elanna, a white character and a lighter latina character who people seem to often draw darker than they are in canon. and there’s like. a Lot going on there to unpack.
so this video goes into some detail about the racism baked into the origins and design of the klingons in tos, it’s very informative about the anti-asian stereotypes especially in a 60s context but i feel like it doesnt really cover the way that antiblackness becomes a more significant factor in the next gen era so like. if you didn’t know, the majority of the klingon characters in the next gen-ds9-voyager era are either played by actors with dark skin or Very frequently by white actors in heavy dark makeup. if you look up the actors of grilka, alexander, kehleyr, and sirella for example you’ll see what im talking about like the difference is Stark and these are some of the main recurring klingons across both shows. hopefully i do not need to explain why packing white actors in brown makeup to play members of a species characterised as violent, warlike and animalistic is racist. i say hopefully bc who knows with this website. anyway i’d recommend this video for a wider context on the legacy of blackface in tv!
martok is a rare example of a klingon played by a white actor who, as far as i can tell, does not have his skin significantly darkened. so to see him frequently being drawn with darker skin is uh Slightly Concerning given everything in the previous paragraph! ive even seen art where he’s drawn darker than julian in the same post which... anyway im not trying to blanket condemn reinterpreting the design of alien characters in fanart, but i am asking white fans like myself in particular to think critically as to why, out of all the white characters and aliens on ds9, martok is the one you want to do that with.
because b’elanna is not a white character i think its a slightly different situation, but at the same time she does have lighter skin and i have seen fanart of her drawn much much darker and once again, im not condeming it especially in works ive seen which explore the relationship bewteen her latina and klingon identities, but its something white fans need to handle carefully. in the voyager episode Faces where she gets split into a human and klingon version of her (dont have time to unpack all that) you can see the difference in undertones between human b’elanna and klingon b’elanna (also included a pic of regular b’elanna for reference). the brown makeup is obvious here too and if you can see why it might be racist to attribute a person’s rage and violent impulses to a part of themself that is then personified as darker skinned/more brown, then you might also see some of the wider problems going on here and can understand that this is something that demands a lot of thought and consideration.
Tumblr media
i’d like to reiterate that this is a very complex and nuanced issue, especially considering the intersection of fictional race within the setting and the racial biases operating behind the scenes/metatextually, and i’d love to discuss it more (and to cite better sources than youtube videos when i have the time). but for now i’d just like to say yeah just ask yourself what the implications might be to drawing these characters in particular darker than they are in canon, especially if theyre the only characters you do that for, or you’re intentionally contrasting them with other characters (e.g. b/7 fanart) or yk. drawing a white character darker than a character of colour like ive seen people do with julian and martok.
