Alternatively titled: This prompt got out of hand and I don't know what to do with it.

Nearly everything in the world can kill you. Will kill you. Predators are the most obvious- the sharpened claws and teeth- and other trolls the next obvious. Trolls were built for fighting and carnage, and their entire culture reflected it. It’s part of the reason Karkat lived as distantly as he could, within reason, to avoid any interaction that might lead to his blood revealing himself. A bright red mutation that he was no longer able to hide once he emerged from his adult molt. They would chase him down as a Curse and use his bones in their remedies and blood for their wards.

The nearby townfolk were stupid about superstition as they had reason to be. The lands they built upon for generations were the few habitable areas-- land that didn’t have volcanic eruptions every other perigee or portals to the Eldritch Depths. 

The verdant pastures that allowed them protection from the bone crunching maws of beasts had dangers of its own. Like the mirror-like reflection of a quiet lake covers the skeletons of drowned victims, so does the lush woods bordering their settlement hide an unassuming threat: Hueman. Or Hugeman. Karkat couldn’t remember which. Hugman? Man.

Avoid the twilight hours as they make the realms thinnest, avoid a full moon for that’s when they hunt. Don’t journey into the woods alone and be back within the town walls before the twelfth toll of the bell. No troll was truly safe and sudden disappearances or misfortunes were blamed on Humans- if no mutant was around to take the blame- and it was only from the Will of the Twelve and the trollfolk’s ferocity that their walls kept them alive.

His entire wrigglerhood was spent in constant fear and paranoia, woven like the finest fabric from threads of the stories and cautionary tales adults would share. That mental shroud was the outline for his plans through his adult molts and his final steps outside the town gates. With the help of a few extremely close friends, sworn to absolute secrecy or else face a slow and painful death by his hands he swears to the Twelve he will haunt them until they go insane and wish he had killed them, a modest shack was constructed.

That was nearly three sweeps ago and Karkat hasn’t seen a single fucking Human.
