shaking and sobbing thinking about the parallels between rost's and varl's deaths. how rost died trying to save aloy and varl died trying to save beta. how in the aftermath of rost's death, aloy overrides her first strider while in the aftermath of varl's death, she overrides her first sunwing. how in both cases, aloy was knocked out and was saved by someone else. how she wakes up in a panic both times. how she has no time to grieve either of them at all. how aloy returns to the house she grew up in and says 'it's not home anymore. not without rost' and how empty the base becomes without varl to keep everyone glued together. how both their graves are right outside these places. how important the two of them were to her, in very different ways but ultimately both of them not wanting aloy to be alone. how they're survived by their children, rost with aloy and varl with his unborn child.

An HDZ/HFW headcanon I have is that at some point in her early teens, Aloy just... Didn't talk. Which like. There wasn't much of a point when literally the only person who WOULD talk to her was Rost, but it had the added benefit of reminding Rost that children do, in fact, need to be socialized, so he starts bringing her along to help with Odd Grata just so she would interact at least peripherally with a human being. It's also why he never got too hard on her case about Karst.

He had given Aloy clear boundaries, but knowing the girl as he does, he is sure that she would have made her camp as close to the edge of those boundaries as she possibly could. It takes him longer than he would like to admit to find the first trace of her - which brings him both frustration and pride.

He finds the remains of a fire, long-since gone cold, but Aloy and her kit are nowhere to be seen. He crosses to the other side of the fire and a pit forms in his stomach. Leaning against the other side of the rock she had made her fire behind is Aloy’s bow, distinctive red feathers blowing in the slight wind.

“Time to see if you live up to your name, Rost of the Nora,” Fashav stated as he stopped and turned, putting Rost at his left side and he pulled the bow up and knocked an arrow. Rost huffed and shook his head.

“No idea what you mean, Carja. Tell me later. Let’s kill some bandits first.”

The first of the riders charged them, taking down the first of the unarmed Carja guards, but Fashav made sure to leave their machines riderless with swift arrows to their throats.

“Grab weapons from the dead, you fools!” Rost roared, leaping at one of the riderless mounts and driving his spear into its processor, glad for the practice with the focus while hunting now that he needed it to keep these barely armed children alive.
