Buck says, I’ve got you, when he pulls him out from the camper van, and Eddie can’t shake the sense of déjà vu that haunts him alongside the burning ache of his broken ribs.

At the hospital, in the waiting room, and later still once they’ve all been kicked out and sent home by Athena, Eddie can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t ignore the feeling that he’s missing something; that he’s forgotten something.

Now that they’re home, Buck’s pottering away in the kitchen, and Eddie’s been ordered to stay on the couch for the foreseeable.

“Take it easy, I got this,” Buck had insisted when Eddie had made a noise of complaint at being coddled.

I’ve got you.

Christopher’s video game is set to a lower volume than usual, and ever since they’d picked him up from school, he’s been careful to sit with space between them to limit the chances of accidentally elbowing his father in pursuit of a high-score. 

The cold pack Eddie’s holding against his abdomen is getting warm, and he can hear the tell-tale beeps of the timer being set on the oven. A pasta bake, if Eddie remembers correctly. Or. Was it something with broccoli?

Maybe both? 

He yawns. The day’s harrowing events bear down on him, and showering away the dust and grime off of his body had taken more effort than he’d expected. He shifts, and a wave of exhaustion has him blinking slowly in its wake. He wonders what time it is, but his eyes remain closed.

“Food won’t be long,” Buck’s voice drifts from above—closer now, and Christopher responds with a hangry remark. One that, judging by the ensuing complaint of “Buuuck!” resulted in having his hair tousled for the cheek. 

“Just for that you can come help me with the salad,” Buck tells Chris, and Eddie feels his son shift to his feet beside him. 

“Dad’s sleeping,” he says in an exaggerated whisper but Eddie doesn’t catch a response if there is one.  He feels the touch of careful fingers brushing against his own as the not-so-cold pack is gently pried from Eddie’s grasp, and without it to hold on to, the dream comes quick.

He’s on the ground—pinned by the detritus of the camper van—pinned by the threat of a sniper—pinned by the determined look of his best friend crawling across the asphalt to get to him. “Hang on, just hang on!”

Buck grabs a hold of his right arm—in one instance he apologizes in advance, in another, he screams from beneath the fire-truck as he scrambles forward, and in both Eddie yells at the pain as he’s dragged to safety. Pulled to his feet, and held by a steady grasp. Cradled and carried and lifted to safety. I’ve got you, I’ve got you, I’ve—I’ve—I’ve—

The images overlap, memories intertwined, and Eddie struggles to make sense of any of it until he sees the dried blood across the side of Buck’s face. Streaming from his nose, with small grazes by his eye. Red smears on the side of his neck, more still on his white shirt—no, his black turnout—Eddie’s mind switching between the two like some garish flip-book. Night and day, but one constant remains.

Buck.

The last thing Eddie sees clearly in the dream is the image of Buck’s face hovering above him—fear and desperation painfully visible through the violent red splatter on his cheeks. Like an awful piece of performance art, Eddie’s existence has been boiled down to an imitation of a Jackson Pollock painting on his best friend’s shirt.

Is that mine? He wonders with a new kind of horror as his eyes flutter open.

“Are you hurt?” He whispers, still caught in the dream as he slowly wakes to find Buck staring down at him, in the same way he had in the dream. Eddie reaches up to gently touch the small scratches and cuts dotted across Buck’s frowning face, only to elicit a small wince from the other man. 

“You were dreaming,” Buck whispers, but he doesn’t pull away—if anything he leans into the touch, sighs at the feeling. “Dinner’s ready,” he adds softly, making no move to stand from where he’s crouched in front of the sofa. In front of Eddie. 

Eddie doesn’t know how to tell him that the dreams were really memories—nightmarish ones, hidden, buried deep, and knocked loose by the image of Buck’s face—bloodied and shouting—as he pulled Eddie to safety again and again. He doesn’t know how to respond at all, so he lets his thumb drift across the beginnings of a bruise running into Buck’s hairline instead. Close, and intimate; quiet and soft. 

“Were you dreaming about today?” Buck asks gently, his words laced with a painful kind of understanding. Eddie’s voice catches in his throat. Yes, and no, he thinks to say. Why didn’t you tell me? He wonders too.

Before he can say either, Christopher calls out to them from the dining table, washed up and ready to eat, and the moment has passed.

Eddie gives Buck a small smile instead, slipping into the familial domestic routine of dinner with his son and his best friend—his family. 

“Help me up?” He asks with a slight groan as his ribs remind him of the endless ache that stretches closer to Eddie’s heart that he’d ever care to admit. 

“Sure,” Buck says, standing tall, and reaching down, his hand outstretched to Eddie; a steady anchor, a port in the storm. Always.

“I’ve got you.”

Not a secret anymore

Kylian and I, we’ve been dating for over a year now, but no one knew except our family and close friends.

We decided to keep it private mostly for my sanity, I didn’t want crazy fans insulting me because I was dating their favorite football player. Unfortunately these kind of things happen, especially if you’re dating a very famous person.

Second of all, Kylian is a very private person. We kept our relationship hidden from the media for over a year so I think we’ve been doing a great job.

Like every PSG match I attend I always sit with his family.

That made fans speculate.

Some of them think Kylian and I are dating, some of them think we’re just good friends.

The only times we’ve been seen together were when I was at the Stadium.

Just in the first half of the game Kylian scored and, of course, as a PSG supporter and as Kylian’s girlfriend I couldn’t help but celebrate along with his family. His mum hugged me so he did his brother. Some fans saw this interaction between the three of us and decided to film it and post it on instagram.

That’s the main reason I wanted to keep our relationship private.

The first 45 minutes of the game passed and PSG was winning.

I couldn’t be happier.

While I was waiting for the game to start again I decided to open Instagram to kill time.

I saw my notifications blowing up because some fan pages reposted the video.

I was reading through the comments and some of them were nice, others weren’t.

“Typical” I whispered so low no one could heard me.

A lot of people were trying to understand if Kylian and I were truly dating. Honestly I didn’t care, they had no proofs but I was worried something might came up. I don’t want his fans thinking I’m using him for fame and I also want to respect his privacy.

I decided to put down my phone and watched the game since I was so lost in my thoughts I didn’t see the match has restarted.

Kylian scored.

Again.

The fans were going crazy.

I was going crazy.

I couldn’t contain my happiness.

The moment he scored he waved to where I was sitting. Some people assumed he was waving to his brother but I know it was directed at me.

Just 10 minutes after the game ends and PSG has won.

Everyone was celebrating.

Fans were screaming and singing and shouting and some of them were even crying too.

Kylian and his teammates were celebrating.

That’s when I saw him coming directly towards us.

I thought he wanted to celebrate with his family so I didn’t say anything.

Oh boy I was wrong.

He came up straight towards me and hugged me.

“Kylian what are you doing?” I whispered trying to maintain a straight face.

He didn’t respond.

Instead he kissed me.

In front of 60.000 people.

And more watching from home.

“Kylian stop what are you doing?” I asked a bit worried.

Maybe it was the adrenaline.

Maybe not.

“I’m kissing my girlfriend” he said kissing me again.

I couldn’t contain my excitement but I was a bit worried too.

“What about keeping it private Kyky?” I asked him using his favorite nickname.

“I don’t care, I don’t wanna hide it anymore…” he said between taking breaths “I want the world to know that I have the most unique girlfriend by my side” he said kissing my cheek.

“They are filming…” I whispered to him almost laughing.

“Let them film” he simply said back.

Then he took my hand.

I knew what he wanted to do.

But I tried to stop him.

“Kylian are you sure?”

He looked at me and nodded with his beautiful smile that made me fall in love.

He took me out in the field where all of his teammates were celebrating. Of course they already knew about us but they also knew about our privacy so most of them were shocked too.

The moment I was in the field I saw hundreds of photographers trying to come up to me and Kylian but his protective arms shielded me from them.

“You know we’re gonna be on every magazine tomorrow right?” I asked him smiling.

“I just hope they’re gonna post nice pictures” he winked at me and I couldn’t contain my laugh.

After the game we came straight home. He was so tired and I was so sweaty that I needed at least three showers.

“Can i join you?” he asked entering the bathroom while I was already in the shower.

“What if I say no?” I asked laughing

“I’ll join you anyway”

“Exactly” I already knew the answer.

He got in the shower with me and we spent the next 20 minutes just showering each other and showing us affection and love.

We got out and we went straight to bed. Both of us already tired from the long day we had.

I fell asleep with my head on his chest and his arms around me, like every single night.

When I woke up I decided to check my phone.

“Shit…” I whispered trying to not wake up Kylian.

He heard me tho.

“Bonjour” he said hugging me.

He was so clingy in the morning it made me thing I was taking care of a baby sometimes.

“What are you watching?” he asked still half asleep.

“My Instagram followers just went up from 200 to a million” I say to him looking weirdly at my phone “and they keep going up”

“That happens when you’re dating Kylian Mbappè” he said proudly.

I couldn’t help but laugh a bit.

“Just put your phone down and come back to sleep, it’s early” he said putting his head on my chest.

“It’s 10 am Kyky”

“Exactly, it’s early”

I smiled looking at him and went back to sleep.

Sometimes I couldn’t believe I had the most perfect guy on my side.

I just love him too much.

yourusername welcome to my postgame penalty box update: i’m going to be a sap because of my best friend edition! this was a heartbreaking loss, but quinn kicked some serious ass tonight. in his postgame interview, he went on to explain why this game wasn’t their best. i’m not going to argue, but quinn, my favorite hughes of the day, you were really hughesing tonight! (warning: this next part is zero silly goosing and pure love babies)

during his 28:33 minutes of ice time, my best friend scored the opening goal of the game 6:06 into the game! jamie has photographic proof that i immediately burst into tears at this from pure joy and pride. this was his sixth of the season, for real this time, so this goal gave him his 70th point of the season! he is continuing to beat his points in a single season for a d-man in the canucks record!

quinny baby’s second point of the night came in second period at 18:26, where he got his 65th assist on brock’s goal! once again adding to his record point season!

here’s where it gets extra special: quinn’s third point of the night happened at 19:06 in third period. how did he get this third point? WITH ANOTHER GOAL BABY!!! LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN!!! my best friend scored the equalizer and brought the game into OT! i cried even harder this time, and trevor did NOT have a fun time with that! (i’m not sorry)

to summarize: quinn now has 7 goals, 65 assists, and 72 points this season! he had his second career multi goal game, and has beat his previous record of most multi point games for a d-man in a season for the canucks’ franchise to 20 to 21 games! happy quinn hughes night everyone! all of this on the four year anniversary of his first nhl point! and his fourth game without a penalty!

shoutouts: brock also had a three point game! and kuzy got two goals and is now 2nd for the record of most goals by a first year player, behind austin matthews who had 39 goals! and burroughs!! he threw hands!! blood was drawn!! z has video evidence of me cheering!

Every UMich Monday question, 2022-23

As is tradition, I have rewatched every single Monday question in a row, and I now present to you a complete list. The most interesting recurring themes this year were sleepy Mackie, Gavin being obsessed with Jaybone, Frankie having a crush on Brendan, and everyone agreeing that Seamus is a total weirdo. Instead of a full ranking this year, I've sorted them into tiers. Bonus links to non-Monday question but still gold star content appear at the end.

Tier I: Every single second an absolute delight

December 7, 2022 If you could make it rain anything, what would it be? This contains the single flirtiest interaction I have ever seen in a Monday question video, and I say this as a survivor of the Thomas Bordeleau era. It’s a crime against humanity that the video cuts just as Rutger starts to loom over Gavin after drawling suggestively about how he has a sweet tooth. Also features Luca sweetly encouraging Truss.

November 15, 2022 Who has the best bromance on the team? BEST QUESTION and Jaybone kicks it off right: “Gotta be the Fantilli brothers for sure.” Other highlights include Luke insisting that he and Duker have the best bromance despite great skepticism from his teammates (Luca: “I mean you got in a fight today.” Luke: “Ya, out of love.”) and Johnny and Luca’s joint announcement of their  engagement bromance, immediately endorsed by everyone else on the team.

November 22, 2022 If you had to describe yourself or a teammate using just Thanksgiving foods, what would you say? This is an all-timer. It starts with a series of teammates describing Moyle as the thickest Thanksgiving dishes possible, and then it builds to Johnny describing Seamus as pudding (presumably because he’s soft and sweet) and then looking longingly at Luca while telling him he’s the main dish. Also an unknown staffer chips in with a very important Seamus characterization: “Seamus Casey is green bean casserole. It’s a little different, it’s okay. But you only want it once a year.”

November 2, 2022 If you were sailing around the world, what would you name your boat? Hello, 911? I’m calling to report a murder. It was Jacob Truscott in the locker room with the “I would do Granger. Because I miss my roommates Thomas and Matty so it would remind me of them.” This one also features Adam’s dumb face goggling at Rutger’s incredibly dumb answer. And we also learned that Jaybone calls Gavin “Scooter.” 

April 4, 2023 Who’s the best teammate to room with on the road? They ended the season on a high note by revealing everybody's road roommates, with a heavy dose of characterization. Luke praising Truss, and then Truss getting snarky as soon as Luke turns his back. Last year’s Brendan/Dylan and Matty/Mackie roommate combos, a parent trap if ever I heard of one. Jaybone feeding Seamus chicken and rice and putting him to bed on time. Nolan and Gavin ordering Chik-Fil-A and clearly getting up to no good.

Tier II -- Screaming out loud

February 14, 2023 Who makes the best wingman? RICH with characterization. Self-deprecating Seamus vs. self-confident Gavin! (Particularly when contrasted with multiple teammates identifying Seamus as the best wingman and Adam emphatically declaring that Gavin’s the worst wingman even though literally nobody asked.) Luca and Johnny being absolutely besotted with each other, and Rutger manhandling them.

January 17, 2023 Who on the team takes the longest to get ready? Rutger trying to Facetime the Fantillis while they’re taking forever to do their hair is PURE GOLD. Also an early reference to Gavin getting the dance moves going.

March 8, 2023 What’s your favorite memory from the season, so far? Adam’s favorite memory was watching Luca score his first goal.

October 11, 2022 If you could have any zoo animal as a pet, what would it be? Wherein we learned that Phil and Keato adopted ducks last spring. “Shoutout to Moose, Chip, Waddle, Bandit, we miss you.” (Connor Earegood, you still owe us the details. We will not forget.)

October 19, 2022 If you could swap lives with a teammate for a day, who would it be and why? The origin of so many recurring motifs! Seamus being perpetually lost, Mackie lying around in bed all day, smarty Holtzy, and everybody wants to know what’s going in Mark Estapa’s head. Seamus: “I’d probably be Luca. He has a really safe moped. It’s really nice. I’d like to drive around on it.”

February 7, 2023 What is your favorite and most often used emoji? A sleeper hit, primarily due to Holtzy and Adam’s recreations of the facepalm emoji and the silly face emoji, respectively. And Eric’s dig about how Mackie would be the sleepy emoji. Gavin picking the upside down smiley face feels right, too.

March 18, 2023 If you could fill the B1G Cup with anything, what would it be? Jacob Truscott’s finest Monday question appearance: Frenchifying Philippe LaPointe’s name and hassling Luca about ice cream flavors!

November 30, 2022 Who on the team would you NOT let tape your stick? A very important entry in Disaster Seamus canon. Doesn’t ever tape his stick. Doesn’t know how.

January 3, 2023 What’s on your 2023 bucket list? Yet another reference to Seamus being a liability on a moped. Luca wants to take a trip with the boys after the season. Steve wants to go back to back B1G champions (CHECK!) It’s a light week because the squad is off at WJC, so “Mine’s to give Dylan Duke a big ol’ hug when he gets back,” says Mackie. 

September 20, 2022 If you were a cartoon character, who would you be? Great answers top to bottom, but Adam going with Mike Wazowski because “I think he has a good heart” is the most intriguing. Gavin and Luca hugging it out is also important.

September 22, 2022 What would your walk-up song be? Gavin and Luca dancing away together is the highlight of this one. The mysterious Phil/Mark/Seamus pick of Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride also intrigues.

katie mccabe: left back (but honestly left everything wonder woman). captains the irish national team. plays for WSL's arsenal, has been since 2015 (minus a lil bit loaned to glasgow in 2017). those are the two important facts here really but the below is ~flavor~.

she's 28 and 5'5 and she's a DREAM. scored an olimpico at the world cup (FIRST IN WOMENS WORLD CUP HISTORY!!!!) (THATS WHERE YOU SCORE A GOAL DIRECTLY FROM A CORNER. FIRST ONE SINCE THE 60S IN A WORLD CUP IN GENERAL!! LITERALLY INSANITY!!!)

also for context this world cup was ireland's wnt's first ever major tournament appearance. she's the first ever irish goal-scorer (of men and women!). she's amazing. here's her for arsenal:

ruesha littlejohn: striker/midfielder. scottish-irish, but represents ireland at the senior level. 33 years old. has played for a lot of teams club-wise. currently plays for london city lionesses, a second tier team, but that wasnt announced til after the world cup. her most recent wsl team was aston villa (but i mean it, she's played like everywhere lol). 5'6 if you're curious.

caitlin foord: forward! plays for australia internationally, and arsenal (so teammates with katie. this is important.) she's played for arsenal since 2020! used to play for the thorns in the nwsl once upon a time. 5'7, if, again, you're curious. she used to date a swiss footballer (lia walti, who's played for arsenal since 2018) but they broke up like six months before the world cup. walti unfollows the australian team on instragram right after they post a video of foord, it's all very dramatic (THEYRE STILL TEAMMATES AT ARSENAL THIS WHOLE TIME BTW). arsenal man, always at the scene of the crime.

world cup happened this past summer (2023), btw. to give you an idea of timing.

katie mccabe and ruesha littlejohn dated for 6-7 years (some articles say 6, some say 7). they came out in june 2019 and said they'd been dating for three years already. their breakup was confirmed right before the world cup (like THE SAME WEEK??), in an article where mccabe was like "yeah, ruesha, my partner at the time..." very casual.

and then. in JUNE. (world cup starts july 20th!!)

foord and mccabe go to ibiza w an ex-arsenal player (jordan nobbs). who (in june 2023, not anymore) played at aston villa with. you guessed it. littlejohn. so yeah your ex gf goes on a trip to ibiza w a new girl and your current teammate, you might be a lil pissed off. maybe.

the sun's (i know, BOOOO but this made me laugh so hard) caption on a pic from the trip had me cackling:

so now we've got two exes on the irish national team going into their first world cup appearance, the captain of the swiss national team and an australian player having broken up like six months ago, and much more, but that isn't directly related to This Specifically.

while you, anon, presumably know how the world cup works, ill give a mini explainer for anyone lost: there's the group stage, where the teams get divided into groups (in this case, of four), and your team plays every other team in the group. you get three points for winning a game, one for a draw, and none for a loss. those points add up and top two teams move on. and then you go into the knockout stage, where you have to win to advance, and if you keep winning you make it to the final yay!!

but for this we only care about the group stage. and more specifically, about group B.

group B is made up of nigeria, canada, australia, and (drumroll please) ireland!!! it is the stuff reality tv shows WISH they could make happen.

ireland and australia play. it is (almost*) the very first game of the tournament (but it's still on july 20th). it is at 5am my time. you would not believe the timezone fuckery i went through that month.

(*ok new zealand played norway starting a bit earlier on the same day but that's not as dramatic sounding)

and you know how they shake hands with the other team before a game? yeah well here's littlejohn apparently refusing to shake foord's hand:

i admittedly have not kept up to date on anything that's gone down since the world cup so it's entirely possible more has happened! in fact i would say that it is downright likely lol. i love soccer lesbians n the insane charts necessary to keep track of their relationships <3

“Wait, what?” I say. But before I can properly protest, they all are gone and it is just Mason and I standing in the middle of a corridor.

“He did that on purpose.”

“You think?” I say, rolling my eyes. “Do you at least know where the exit is? We can wait for them outside.”

“It is freezing cold outside. Why don’t we wait at the bar?”

“Ok, fine.”

“My shirt looks really nice on you” Mason says after walking in silence for a couple of minutes.

“Thank you” I reply, looking anywhere but at him. “Are you sure you know where we are going?”

“Yeah, we are… shit” he says when we make it to an emergency exit.

“Dear God, Mason. We are lost.”

“No, we are not. We are just a bit…”

“Lost?” I chuckle.

“We’ll find our way back, don’t worry. We just have to follow the same route but backwards.”

“We are lost. They are going to close the stadium with us inside.”

Heat of the game and all that, I gotta say I find Travis bumping coach so off-putting. That’s such a typical example of macho behavior, and these physical displays of frustration/aggression/domination get so easily excused because of heightened emotions. This is primitive dudebro behavior in my eyes. Travis can be cute and I liked him at the beginning, but this is such a red flag about a man, regardless of profession and situation. anyway listen i was briefly repulsed as well obviously he’s there for work and he should keep it professional.

apparently he did immediately go hug the coach and apologize after and the coach said he wasn’t being disrespectful just saying “put me in i’ll go score”. obviously the act of getting in his coaches face was gross but i actually think he bumped into him on accident (if you watch the video they both look surprised at the contact) and was more just going to grab his arm.

but one last thing idk if yall know- so i’ve never seen a player get in a coach’s face like that as far as i can remember BUT ive seen coaches do that to players again and again and again. they are always screaming, always in their faces, grabbing them by the facemask and ripping their heads down to yell at them louder. hell i got verbally abused by a male basketball coach in 8th grade. it is sadly part of the culture of football and sports particular amongst men. maybe that’s due to cortisol and testosterone like the tiktoker said in the above video but for whatever reason that kind of behavior is common between coaches and players and players and players on the field.

it’s unacceptable and should change but i’m not shocked that it hasn’t.

i also would say do not underestimate just how violent tackle football is. i played in a women’s league for a year and the hits are insane and definitely get you riled up. like i have cleanly tackled girls harder on the field than travis grabbed at his coach. i can see how the lines get blurred while you’re out there hitting and hitting and hitting and then you’re on the sideline and oops something physical happened.

it seems obvious to me that travis has some degree of anger management problems and imo he should seek therapy and anger management classes. but i don’t think he’s a danger to anyone. he has a track record of acting out on the field but not anywhere else.

only time will tell tho. it is a red flag and i hope he just gets some treatment!

Just dumping some of my thoughts here because I don't have anywhere else to put them. Not looking for advice, just looking to vent, scream into the void and maybe some support if anyone is willing.

I actually found out that my grandmother was dying yesterday. It went very quickly from "she's going to stay in the hospital for a bit" to "she only has about 5-6 hours left before her death."

As a lot of you know, my family is in Japan whereas me, my parents, and one of my uncles live in America so we weren't able to be there. My aunt and her family were there though, so they video chatted me and my parents so that we could see her again and talk for one last time. It was a pretty weird sight to see multiple people holding up phones to her while she was in the hospital bed. She looked so frail and weak, and she must've been in a lot of pain — they were holding off on giving her painkillers for a bit because she probably wouldn't wake up afterwards.

My aunt had to really encourage her to open her eyes to see us, but when she finally managed to, she saw me and the first thing she immediately said was how pretty I was. And that might be the very last thing she ever says to me.

The entire family was able to be there, half in-person and half virtually. At one point I was video chatting another family member and holding up my phone to my mom's phone so she could also be with my grandmother through two layers of videochat.

It turns out that my grandmother had cancer, and she didn't tell anyone that she wasn't feeling well because she didn't want to bother or worry anyone.

We were told at the time that once they gave her painkillers, she wouldn't wake up. She'd pass peacefully in her sleep, without being in pain. They didn't know when, but estimated it to be around 5 to 6 hours, depending on how much strength she had left.

Well, apparently she had a lot of strength left because she made it through the night and woke up. Her blood pressure was back to normal levels, and she's awake and alert and she pulled through.

I can't emphasize enough how amazing of a woman my grandmother is. She's in her mid-nineties, and she's never experienced any of the typical aches and pains of aging. She's never experienced hip or back pain, she kept really active as much as she could (she lived on the 4th floor of an apartment building that she owned well into her 70s. The stairs were ridiculously steep and there was no railing and it's enough to make any adult wheeze!), and she was always finding ways of stimulating her brain so that she could stay mentally sharp. She's also dainty and elegant like a princess, and loves dressing nicely.

This actually happened just yesterday — the day before my licensing exam. And I was so fucking scared of failing because I couldn't make my grandmother the reason I failed.

And I passed! I actually scored amazingly well despite the circumstances, but it's really hard to be happy about it when so much going on. Moving on with being licensed, transitioning into a new job... It feels really weird with everything happening right now. I've always been avoidant and anxious about it, but this is making it ten times worse and all I want to do is hide in my bed to keep everything away. Because if I don't leave my bed, the day can't start, and if the day doesn't start, nothing bad can happen.

(Despite what I might sound like right now, I am actually very functional and am handling this well, don't worry. Staying in bed past noon when I don't have anything to do that day is one of my indicators that I'm feeling really anxious. And these days my internal clock wakes me up really early, so even after procrastinating leaving my bed I actually get on with my day around 11 or sometimes 12, and I'm currently unemployed so it's not like I'm missing anything important. I'm doing fine. This is just my rambly thought dump so everything sounds much more dysfunctional than it actually is.)

Right now we're in a very weird stasis of grandma is still alive, but we don't know what's actually happening. Because of COVID, no one is allowed to visit her, and the hospital is apparently short staffed so we're not getting a ton of updates. My cousin managed to talk to a nurse by chance when she was delivering some clothes and toothbrushes for my grandma, and as far as we know right now, she's alert and she's stable. But it also doesn't seem like there's a huge chance for recovery? I don't know the details but they're giving her painkillers, and are draining... something periodically, but it doesn't sound like there's any treatment happening.

I guess we're just waiting to see how long she holds on before she's ready to pass?

Part of me thinks that she'll be okay in the end. I really, truly thought that she would easily live past 100. Other part of me is already grieving.

It's so frustrating, because there's literally no point for me and my parents to go to Japan right now. Even if we did get there, we wouldn't be able to visit. My aunt, uncle and cousin were only allowed in yesterday because they really thought that this was going to be the end.

And what's even more frustrating is that I haven't seen my family in Japan for five years. We had tickets to go to Japan in May of 2020. COVID stole away at least two summers that we would've been able to spend with my grandmother. And what makes it worse is that these were my last summer breaks. I was in grad school. I had the summer off; I wasn't working or taking classes, I was legitimately on summer break and goofing around doing nothing productive.

But now, I'm about to start my career! I accepted a job that I was really excited about and I'm going to start really soon. And it's going to be really hard to take extended time off! (I'm already negotiating a couple weeks off in August for a nonrefundable trip, which will make it even more difficult to ask for more time off in the first 3 months of my employment if something happens). It was my last chance to easily spend a month or three in Japan, and the pandemic took that away. Even if I hopped onto a plane right now and went to Japan, I still might never see my grandmother again because visitors aren't allowed due to COVID.

Also it's a busy time for flights to Japan right now because everyone goes in the summer; there are almost no seats left and the ones that are, are ridiculously expensive. My family doesn't have a ton of money; it would be worth it, but it would also be really difficult to make ends meet if we bought tickets. One ticket would be tight but manageable, but not three — and if we're sending anyone, it would be my father, since it's his mother.

it just really, seriously sucks right now and the timing of everything going down just makes it worse on multiple levels because it's giving me a lot of "what ifs" and "if onlys".

The emotional roller coaster has been wild over the past 36 hours, and I just want to get off.

China's monitoring of social media just feels like secondary school to me, there is a prefect at every corner just keeping an eye. The joke around the internet is just having a good credit score and funny enough it plays out in real life too 💀.

In this video, he interviewed two different kind of China civilians. The first one shows a lady who obeys the laws and is classified by the China government to be a "good citizen". Nothing wrong with a lawful citizen in fact thats a big plus to society but it just get ridiculous when these are even determined with what is purchased by this lady during grocery shopping. Getting a higher credit score for buying baby diapers and a lower one with just the purchase of alcohol? Come on! One is a necessity if a family has a baby and one can just be something a person need to kick it back after a long day, how does a purchase determine the good and bad of a civilian? On top of that, these credit scores are hugely complimented by having perks like getting higher priority in booking transport or accomodations outside.

On the other side, the second individual is a journalist popular around China because of how he critiques and is very vocal with his opinions on their social media. Because of this, his post and public profile are taken down. This also causes his credit score to plument into rock bottom. He isn't able to book public transport on a reasonable time, airplane tickets are extra expensive and some hotels do not even accept him. Giving low priority to citizens who share their honest opinions just does not exactly scream human rights to me.

The scariest fact is this video was released 3 years ago, with technology now what more can they keep track of their citizens? It is just down right scary to me, I have always find the charm of social media is the freedom of speech and people just having a medium to voice out their opinions. Don't we just learn a little faster and obtain more perspectives in general?

This is just my take though, I do see the merits of this system of promoting a healthy and it could possibly benefit the country's disciplinary issues. But there is always a line in my opinion.

Pokemon Series Retrospective, Volume 2: Pokemon Snap

After the break: a massive Pokemon fan plays Pokemon Snap N64 for the first time to completion.

Background

I mentioned in the previous volume that I got into the gaming sphere kind of late, with my first console being the GBA.  I didn’t grow up with an N64.  My experience with Pokemon Snap was brief encounters at the homes of friends and wealthier family members, maybe some posters or promotional videos at Blockbuster, maybe a McDonald’s N64 kiosk if it was ever demoed in those.  Mostly, just a vague impression of the game.  So playing the game was an experience I didn’t have until the Wii era, when it released on Virtual Console.

The Virtual Console release was notable for letting you post pictures to the Wii message board, but other than that, it was just another Wii Shop novelty for me at the time.  I barely progressed, possibly because I was confused, possibly just because I didn’t really play through video games back then.  For context, I played every single Zelda game as they came out from WindWaker onwards, but never finished a Zelda game until BotW.  Part of the reason for starting a media thread on Twitter and a (since abandoned) Zelda game marathon years ago was to encourage me to actually complete games.

I’ve recently revisited, and completed with unexpected quickness, Pokemon Snap on the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.  I found myself quite enamored with the whole experience; here’s some more detailed thoughts.

Present Day

The main elements of this game just work well.  The fact that courses are relatively short, on-rails segments means you can revisit levels with a sense of familiarity that makes experimentation with different course elements into something you can do reliably.  There’s a good loop of “next time around, I’ll try this here and that there,” and when you unlock new items/tools you get a good sense of “I should try this in this previous course element which eluded me.”  Feeling those things is especially important because I believe this is designed to be a short game with a lot of elements--experimentation, discovery--that make revisiting it fun.  I don’t believe Pokemon Snap is trying to be more than a brief novelty which lets you live in the fantasy world so many of us dreamed of.

The allure of Pokemon is, at least partially, that these are wild creatures with a real presence in the world.  Pokemon Snap is the first game to really lean into that by taking away a lot of your agency.  You still interact with the world through apples and pester balls and flutes, but primarily you serve as an observer.  For people who enjoyed the act and idea of completing a Pokedex, reading every new entry as though you were making a new discovery every time, this game actually puts you in the shoes of the person making those observations that lead to Pokedex entries.  Pokemon mainline games mostly exist in this realm where you’re meant to take Pokedex entries at face value but never really get to witness the behaviors described in any real capacity.  This was the first attempt to actualize Pokemon behavior and natural habitat, and it’s a good attempt. 

The game has its flaws.  The scoring system for photographs is... awkward, clumsy, somewhat archaic by its limitations.  Oak looks for photos that fit a very specific criteria that is often extremely difficult to pull off well.  While getting a better photo is definitely part of what makes going through the courses multiple times enjoyable, that only slightly alleviates the sting of a good picture prompting a “YOU WERE CLOSE” from Oak because the Pokemon was turned 15 degrees away from the camera’s focus.  The actual act of maneuvering your camera is also a bit janky, but not enough to detract from how enjoyable taking photos and interacting with the world is.

Though, overall, I hope you can see that I was pretty endeared to this game.  I went into it expecting a fun but clunky game, and yeah, I did scream at Oak a few times, but it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the overall experience.  I think Snap quite impressively accomplishes what it was going for: a chance to exist in the Pokemon world from the role of an observer, and a chance to contextualize those creatures into a believable world which lives up to the series’ potential.

This episode was just as enjoyable as I remembered. The jokes were funny and Kai being high was amazing. There was a reason this was my second favorite episode from season one. Over all I give this episode a 9.5/10

an important fun fact! the director of this film asked his wife to edit the action sequences (she had no experience editing action films) and the reasoning behind it was "because if a guy did it, it would look like every other action movie." (it won an academy award for 'best editing' btw)

ATOMIC BLONDE (2017) - dir. david leitch

i think it's great how the mc fights with using her surroundings, and it's gritty - she gets hit and hit hard but she can't stop she has a job to do. great action scenes, no unnecessary cutting and they show everything + charlize theron did most of her stunts. and as always the soundtrack is so sexy, oh and btw it's gay!!!!

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015) - dir. guy ritchie

when i say i like action movies i mean it!!!!! this has the cleanest fights in every possible term - they're shot clearly, you can see all of their moves and the fight choreographies are good, they flow very well + it's always good to see the mc's take hits and ethan gets his shit rocked a nice couple of times!! another plus is to know that the actors are dedicated to their films and they take the extra step to do as many of their stunts as possible, it's so cool!!!!

actually made me feel like i had to hold my breath with the characters on screen. definitely scared me and that's a good thing!!!!

this is rated 5+ by my friend who does not watch action. like at all. and she fucking loved it. we (and the whole room) were literally laughing and gasping during the whole thing it's so entertaining. the action is mmmmmmmmmm giving me a boner honestly. this is what u get when the director himself is a stuntman and your lead is doing the majority of his stunts. they're so invested and it fucking shows

DENIS VILLENEUVE - blade runner 2049, arrival, prisoners; rather slow paced but intense, it's all about the visuals, the soundtracks always slap

DAVID FINCHER - se7en, zodiac, gone girl; very dark and intense, also rather slow-paced

QUENTIN TARANTINO - inglourious basterds, pulp fiction, django unchained; now i realize that i'm coming off a real filmbro but it is what it is i love these movies with my heart they're very much my style my taste - blood and violence and good jokes

YORGOS LANTHIMOS - the favourite, the killing of a sacred deer, the lobster; literally so weird i fell in love with his work from the first time i saw the killing of a sacred deer (and i'm so excited for his newest one!!!)

MINDHUNTER (2017-2019)

oh my god, especially the first season!!!! i think i like it so much bc i love holden i don't think i've seen a character who i resonate with so much in a minute. he's so naive and so curious oh man i love this guy. and bill!!!!!!!!!! i know these people are based on the book (which i loved too btw!) and real life and well i hope these people are having a great time ok. i love holden's and bill's dynamic, how bill kind of lets him do his thing but is still lecturing him about it. while being very caring i love how soft-spoken he is most of the time??? and ahh the way it's shot wait wait also need to mention the whole ed kemper and holden dynamic too (this is also where i feel like me and holden are the same fucking person bc i would too believe everything that man says lmao)(i would too think that we're somewhat buddies) AND THE SOUNDTRACK GODDD THE SOUNDTRACK full of bangers anyway i really really love this show and i hope mr fincher will get his shit together and make the third season too

JUJUTSU KAISEN (2020-)

the animation IS INSANE, like i mentioned before i have a habit of leaning closer and closer to the screen when something is getting exciting and well if i wasn't wearing glasses before i would have to get them now bc i was almost inside the fucking screen ok, not for a second was i able to tear my eyes because so much was happening (in a good way)

the first episode i saw was 'sonnie's edge' and let me tell you, i've never been more enthralled!! it's the animation it's the blood it's the gore oh my god it's the horror of it!

season 1 - three robots, the witness, sucker of souls, beyond the aquila rift, helping hand, the secret war

season 2 - pop squad (hehe on a side note one of the greatest voice actors, nolan north, is in this), the tall grass, the drowned giant

the animation!!!!!! i love when animation has fighting in it and this was just great. very good action scenes, very bloody and very brutal.
