watched the first ep of Dead Boy Detectives today, did anyone also think the dialogue was a bit clunky?

I don't mean it was unwatchable or anything i just feel like it didn't feel realistic the way they introduced the characters and world... It felt like the dialogue was for the viewer instead of an in character thing. We were gonna be introduced to a viewer surrogate within the first few minutes, there was no need to have the characters who already know how the show's world works spell it out for nobody... and then explain it again when Crystal showed up? idk it felt like something I would write (not a complient) 😅

"guilt tripping the audience for behaving like an audience" has gotta be one of my least favorite theatrical tropes. like oh? we accepted the convention that people are acting out pretend scenarios and thus did not intervene when someone "did" something bad onstage? we paid less attention to a character that the narrative told us was unimportant? if we had rushed up on stage en masse to try to stop this event unfolding, the entire show would have fallen apart because you are actually actors following a script and audience intervention isn't scripted? and you want us to feel bad for interacting with the text as the text expects and teaches us to interact with it? no, fuck you, write better material

i just. remembered again that i have a fembaru fic but also the premise is. Very Messed Up hah and also it was written before the canon genderbent au with its official genderbend names for everyone so its also outdated on top of that T^T i had like. AU in which Daigo gets kidnapped in 1988 (earlier than the substory tho) and yayoi is like "sohei u bitch if u cant keep our son safe i will do it for u" and sends him off to osaka to a friend of hers where he goes to school as "matsuda" daigo and befriends ryuji and then the two fix-it the entire series <3

After the first class, during break, the teacher takes the new boy aside. Ryuji feels their eyes on him as the teacher speaks in a hushed voice. Well, it was fun while it lasted. But there’s no way the boy will keep that attitude up now that he’s probably learnt who Ryuji’s father is. They never do.

During the next period, the boy acts no different, ignoring Ryuji throughout the entire class (as well as everyone else), generally keeping quiet unless called upon, apparently preferring to observe.

Ryuji doesn’t pay attention himself, spending most of his time staring at Daigo. Everyone else would be sweating and shitting their pants right now, but with Daigo, it’s as if he doesn’t even notice that Ryuji is giving him his best intimidating glare.

Once again, class ends and they have a break. Ryuji turns his attention to his food. Trying to intimidate Daigo into shitting his pants isn’t working and Ryuji is getting frustrated. And when Ryuji gets frustrated, he gets hungry. He releases his frustration by tearing apart his food more viciously than necessary and he gets so caught up in it that he doesn’t notice Daigo taking a stand in front of his desk.

Daigo slams his hands on the desk and when Ryuji looks up, he is glaring him straight in the eyes.

“Do you have a staring problem?”, he demands. “If you have something to tell me, spit it out or stop bothering me!”

Damn, Ryuji can’t stand that kid’s posh accent.

“No!”, Ryuji counters at lightning speed.

“No?”, Daigo repeats, eyes narrowing, tone getting dangerous.

“No!”, Ryuji reaffirms. “Yer just gonna have to deal with it!”

Daigo narrows his eyes even more. Ryuji leans back in his chair provocatively, putting a smug grin on.

like i want it to happen either cause of a mutant or cause mikey was practicing with his new mystic abilities and then just Chaos ensues

i want leo-as-donnie not knowing how to use the battle shells and accidentally wrecking a thing or two while donnie-as-leo panics

i want donnie having to tie together the long tails of leo’s bandana into a comically large bow cause they irritated him so much and leo threatened to lose his shit if donnie cut them short

i want leo refusing to draw on donnie’s signature eyebrows until they really start to fade and donnie essentially ties him to a chair and draws them on himself (or leo begrudgingly sits down one night and does them (they turn out bad but donnie appreciates it))

i want them feeling each other’s chronic pains. leo not realizing how much it hurts to have the battle shell on for as long as donnie usually has it on. and (specifically post movie) donnie feeling the chronic after effects of the krang’s onslaught when leo’s body has a chronic pain flare up (and since neither really complain about it both are like taken aback by how much pain their brother is in at any given point in time)

but most importantly i want a scene with both of them trying to teach each other their weapons because (for plot reasons) their specific nimpo powers didn’t follow them into their new bodies

so leo trying to teach donnie how to make portals and it going Not Well. like, raph having to make the rule “no one goes through the portal unless we can see the other one” bad. (they end up having to walk back from new jersey)

and donnie trying to teach leo how to summon tech using his bo and leo thinking it’s gonna be easy, just think of a cool rocket or something, and then donnie slaps down the schematics for something and tells him he essentially needs to know the ins and outs of anything he wants to make

and thats just the powers part of it. both of them having to learn the basics of using each weapon. leo doesn’t take it seriously at first but when he finally does donnie is surprised with how good he actually is at teaching (even if he doesn’t use the quote-unquote right terminology (“you gotta do a lil fancy footwork thing when you move like that” “feel the vibes, does it feel right?” etc)) donnie gets frustrated easily when he tries to teach leo (“no you do not swing a bo like a baseball bat!”) but leo eventually calms down and takes it serious(ly enough) for some of donnie’s lessons to get through

(at some point the boys try to play basketball and raph and mikey make them play on their own team and they get their asses hilariously handed to them.

until they play again after the scene(s) where they learn each other’s weapons and then they’re Simpatico (they still lose but not by as much))

and then the thing gets reversed somehow and they grow closer as brothers the end

Your point about the only thing Rey people being interested in was her relationship with Kylo and how that paralleled the Luke/Vader relationship is interesting. Hey, sorry but since I ship them and SW has already had enough soap opera-like "i'm your secret twin" last-minute revelations for my tastes I prefer them to be a romantic enemies to lovers pair - something that in SW (at least the movies; the EU was a bit different with Luke/Mara Jade and Revan/Bastila etc.) has never been seen before, so it adds an element of originality in what is basically Poor Man's OT. Same themes as Luke+Vader (love and compassion as a redemptive force) but not make it a family thing, please. That would have been uselessly redudant imo. What I meant with the Luke+Vader parallel is they're a similar brand of "the protagonist shares their most important relationship with an antagonist who turns to the Light thanks to their influence; said dynamic also challenges the main character's naive and black/white beliefs on evil&good, it challenges them to see the world under a different light". Rey didn't need to be a literal Skywalker, Kylo/Ben could have been enough for that as "one half of the protagonist/one side of the coin" - also because he has had to live with that legacy/lovable dysfunctional family for all his life while Rey struggled in a desert and Luke was "a myth" to her. She doesn't even know them; Vader&co. mean nothing to her (that's one of the many reasons the Rey Palpatine revelation feels so hollow - are we even sure she knew what a Palpatine was? lmao). The Vader Is Luke's Father plot works so well because he's the antagonist Luke has been fighting since Film 1, and Luke has been idolizing his dead dad since forever. This forces the kid to grow up - his world shatters, so he has to find a new sort of belief code. Similar to what her relationship with Kylo does (or should do) to Rey, but in a romantic key. Maybe a romance that redeemed the original star-crossed space lovers (Anidala) - this is all about Vader's legacy after all. In fact, it's all about that and how Leia couldn't (understandably) cope with it, and her son getting targeted by Snoke. Anakin's ghost should have definitely made an appearance in TROS and had an overdue talk with his grandson and his daughter but alas, "Palpatine somehow returned" but Anakin can't be bothered about his family I guess lol (that's deeply OOC of him - I'm saying this as a fan of the character).

But I agree with your point about Rey never failing/fucking things up/needing others' help. That's one of the reasons the audience feels like she's never really matured and changed. She needed to face her own demons, not someone else (specifically a man)'s. The angst about her parents abandoning her and treating her like shit should have sufficed: if she's shown her parents were Good People All Along and they were really coming back for her - well, that only reinforces her childish beliefs and never really puts her in the position to challenge them. Same as if Luke's dad had been a good guy, like he dreamed, and not literally Satan's right hand man. That's How To Write Protagonists 101 but I don't think Disneylucas ever cared about creating a somehow coherent story.

Love thinking of the implications giving up on Deltarune have, because unlike in Undertale you aren't some lonely human in a hostile world, you're a silly little kid going on a silly little adventure with their silly little friends. And then you get accidentally killed. Straight up dead. No reset no anything just the black screen. And sure the world is doomed with the prophecy having been unfullfilled but i don't care about that. I care about the inbetween. Because Kris dying also means everyone gets trapped in the Dark World (i guess?), so what then? What IF Kris fucking dies? It's so fucked up and sad all around. I love it.

I love dipping my toes back into comics, remembering all the C and D list characters I love and getting that sense of intrigue again, sliding into headcanon territory like "MAN if they just made a series about this they'd totally have me hooked again!". Then I continue reading about the state of current comics (i.e where those C and D list characters are rn and what the state of canon is) and think about the amount of complexity and set up you'd need to even get halfway close to the perfect vision in your head and how impenetrable current comics are so you wouldn't even know where to start with catching up...

And then I'm once again relieved that I'm not caught up with comics anymore and am simply backreading now irrelevant comics at a glacial pace
